Energy production from sorghum bioethanol is a way to help decrease climate change and environmental degradation. The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics associated to bioethanol production in experimental genotypes of sweet sorghum. During 2013 and 2014, seventeen sweet genotypes were evaluated in two locations, this locations are situated in northeastern Mexico, under a complete block randomly design with three replications. The three experiments were executed in Estacion Cuauhtemoc, Tamaulipas, in dryland; and two in Marin, Nuevo León, under irrigation. Experimental hybrid Potranca x Keller (p≤0.05) presented the highest values (kg/ha) in: biomass weight (52 125), stem (39 650), panicle (4550), leaf (7700), juice (14 125), and bioethanol (2157 l/ha); it surpassed to the most productive control (Keller) in: 35,7, 32,5, 63,2, 41,6, 32,5, and 36,8%, respectively. It bloomed 6.8 days earlier than variety control. Experimental variety 17-1-1-1 had a minor foliar incidence of diseases in comparison to Keller. In addition, it presented agronomic characteristics similar to control in: biomass weight (44 375 kg/ha), stem (35 438 kg/ha), panicle (2488 kg/ha), leaf (6400 kg/ha), juice (11 750 kg/ha), plant dry weight (19 113 kg/ha), stem dry weight (14 888 kg/ha), bioethanol production (1929 l/ha), °Brix (15,2), days to flowering (80,8) and plant height (224 cm). La producción de energía a partir de bioetanol de sorgo, es una manera de ayudar a aminorar el cambio climático y el deterioro del ambiente. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar las características agronómicas asociadas a la producción de bioetanol en genotipos experimentales de sorgo dulce. Durante los años 2013 y 2014 se evaluaron diecisiete genotipos dulces en dos localidades del noreste de México, bajo un diseño de bloques completos al azar con tres repeticiones: tres experimentos en la Estación Cuauhtémoc, Tamaulipas, en temporal; y dos en Marín, Nuevo León, en riego. El híbrido experimental Potranca x Keller obtuvo los valores más altos (p≤0,05) (kg/ha) en: peso de biomasa (52 125), de tallo (39 650), de espiga (4550), de hoja (7700), de jugo (14 125) y de bioetanol (2157 l/ha); y superó al testigo más productivo (Keller) en: 35,7, 32,5, 63,2, 41,6, 36,8 y 32,5%, respectivamente. Además, fue 6,8 días más precoz en cuanto a la floración que el testigo. La variedad experimental 17-1-1-1 se identificó con menor incidencia a enfermedades foliares que Keller. Además, presentaron características agronómicas similares al testigo en: peso de biomasa (44 375 kg/ha), de tallo (35 438 kg/ha), de espiga (2488 kg/ha), de hoja (6400 kg/ha), de jugo (11 750 kg/ha), peso seco de planta (19 113 kg/ha), peso seco de tallo (14 888 kg/ha), producción de bioetanol (1929 l/ha), °Brix (15,2), días a floración (80,8) y altura de planta (224 cm).

This work provides an overview of proteolytic activity in the intestine of Moneilema armatum (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) adults and inhibition of such enzymes by proteins obtained from the cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica. Active intestinal proteases were detected at a neutral and slightly alkaline pH through zymography and spectrophotometric assays using synthetic substrates. These enzymes were susceptible to a specific serine protease inhibitor (PMSF). It was also demonstrated that trypsin-, chymotrypsin-, and elastase-like activities were present. Although the cladodes of O. ficus-indica possess endogenous inhibitors of serine proteases, it appears that not all proteases of M. armatum were affected, particularly those with elastase-like activity. The results indicated that M. armatum exhibits a variety of serine protease activities, and some of these proteolytic activities were insensitive to endogenous O. ficus-indica protease inhibitors. Este trabajo provee una visión general de la actividad proteolítica en el intestino de adultos de Moneilema armatum (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) y la inhibición de dichas enzimas por proteínas obtenidas de los cladodios de Opuntia ficus-indica . Las proteasas intestinales activas fueron detectadas de pH neutral a ligeramente alcalino a través de zimografía y ensayos espectrofotométricos usando sustratos sintéticos. Estas enzimas fueron susceptibles a un inhibidor específico para serin proteasas (PMSF) y también se demostró que las actividades proteolíticas presentes correspondieron a actividades tipo tripsina, quimotripsina y elastasa. Aunque los cladodios de O. ficus-indica poseen inhibidores de serin proteasas endógenos, parece ser que no todas las proteasas de M. armatum fueron afectadas, particularmente la actividad de tipo elastasa. Estos resultados indican que M. armatum exhibe una variedad de actividades de serin proteasas y que algunas de estas actividades podrían haberse vuelto insensibles a la presencia de dichos inhibidores endógenos.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of A, B isogenic lines and R grain sorghum lines which restore androfertility of sorghum for grain production. This work was performed during the spring-summer 2010 in Marin Nuevo Leon under drip irrigation. Days to flowering, seed yield per plant, brix degrees and weight of 1000 seeds were measured. Diversity of maize landraces of Nuevo León, México, using AFLP and morphological characters. The objective of this work was to identify the molecular and phenotypicvariability among maize populations Pinto Amarillo and Liebre in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The phenotypiccharacterization experiment was established in spring 2009.The variables registered were plant height, days to maleand female fl owering, number of rows per ear, kernels perrow of ears, length and diameter of the corn ear. For the molecular characterization of the 30 populations, the seedswere planted in February 2010 in pots with peat-moss. At30 days after planting all the leaves were collected and usedin AFLP. A cluster analysis was conducted using UPGMA method. Three groups were identified; twelve populations of Pinto Amarillo and three of Liebre. The landraces within each group were associated more to races of maize morethan to location. Diversidad de maíces criollos de Nuevo León, México,mediante AFLP y caracteres morfológicos. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo identificar la variabilidad fenotípica y molecular entre poblaciones de maíz Pinto Amarillo yLiebre en Nuevo León, México. En la caracterización fenotípica se estableció un experimento en primavera 2009. Lasvariables registradas fueron altura de planta, días a floración masculina y femenina, número de hileras por mazorca, granos por hilera de mazorca, longitud y diámetro de mazorca.Para la caracterización molecular, las treinta poblaciones se sembraron en febrero del 2010 en macetas con peat-moss, después de treinta días se colectaron todas las hojas de laplántula, para la técnica AFLP; se realizó un análisis conglomeradosutilizando el método de UPGMA. Se identificaron tres grupos; doce poblaciones de Pinto Amarillo y tres de Liebre agrupando genotipos comunes. Los grupos se asociaron más a la raza de maíz que al lugar de colectas.

Plantas de girasol TECMON-52 fueron tratadas con cuatro reguladores del crecimiento, Biozyme a 500 ml/ha Biogib (giberelina) a 5.0 mM, Cycocel (Clormequat), a 3,000 ppm, Cultar (Paclobutrazol) y un control (testigo), para evaluar los efectos sobre los componentes morfológicos del rendimiento del girasol (Helianthus annuus L.). El experimento consistió de 20 unidades experimentales, cada una con 6 surcos, de 0.8 m de ancho y 6 m de largo. "La adaptación del cultivo de maíz a siembras tempranas requiere de mejorar su tolerancia a bajas temperaturas, por lo que la semilla debe permitir altos porcentajes de germinación y emergencia, además de producir plántulas con un desarrollo vigoroso. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue identificar las variables que en las fases de semilla y plántula permiten una mayor tolerancia a bajas temperaturas en líneas e híbridos de maíz adaptados a los Valles Altos de México. Se evaluaron 17 materiales genéticos, 13 tolerantes y cuatro susceptibles, incluidos un híbrido del trópico y un sintético de condiciones templadas. Las temperaturas empleadas fueron 4, 8, 12 y 25°C. Los materiales genéticos originarios de la zona de altura presentaron mayor tolerancia y tuvieron una respuesta similar con todas las temperaturas en el porcentaje de germinación, longitud y peso seco de plúmula y radícula; además de una mayor velocidad de emergencia. La radícula fue proporcionalmente menos afectada que la plúmula tanto en peso seco como en longitud por las bajas temperaturas. Existe un umbral de temperatura entre 4 y 8°C, que provocó la recuperación de la germinación en los genotipos tropicales, los cuales no presentaron tolerancia constitutiva. Los resultados sugieren que la prueba de germinación a 8°C puede considerarse como una prueba rápida para detectar la tolerancia a bajas temperaturas" "The maize adaptation to early sowing requires improving its tolerance to low temperatures, and the seed have to show high germination and emergence percentages, besides of producing vigorous seedlings. The objective of the research work was to identify the traits that in seed and seedlings phases allow higher tolerance to low temperatures, in lines and hybrids of maize adapted to México highlands. Seventeen genotypes were tested, 13 tolerant and four susceptible, including a tropical hybrid and a synthetic variety of a template region. The temperatures tested were 4, 8, 12 and 25°C. The highland genotypes showed a similar response at four temperatures tested in germination percentage, length and weight dry in plumule and radicle; besides a bigger speed emergency. The growth of radicle was less affected than the plumule in dry weight and length at low temperatures. There is a temperature threshold between 4 and 8°C that caused the recovery of germination in tropical genotypes, which did not show a constitutive tolerance.
