2. Ultra-broadband photodetection of Weyl semimetal TaAs up to infrared 10 {\mu}m range at room temperature

Abstract

Photodetectors with broadband optical response have promising applications in many advanced optoelectronic and photonic devices. Especially, those with the detection range up to mid-infrared at room temperature are very challenging and highly desired. Recently, Weyl semimetal has been discovered and proposed to be favorable for photodetection since in general it breaks Lorentz invariance to have tilted chiral Weyl cones around Fermi level, which leads to chirality dependent photocurrents at arbitrarily long wavelength. Furthermore, the linear dispersion bands in Weyl cones result in very high carrier mobility and much reduced thermal carrier compared with the parabolic ones in narrow-gap semiconductors. Here, we report that the Weyl semimetal TaAs based photodetector can operate at room temperature with spectral range from blue (438.5 nm) to mid-infrared (10.29 {\mu}m) light wavelengths and the responsibility and detectivity is more than 78 uA W-1 and 1.88*107 Jones, respectively. This is the first photodetector made by a Weyl semimetal and shows its promising in room-temperature mid-infrared photodetection.

Abstract

We demonstrated the continuous-wave (cw) and pulsed optical vortex with topological charges driven by heat generated during the lasing process without introducing the astigmatism effect and reducing lasing efficiency. During the lasing process, the topological charges were changeable by the thermal-induced lens and selected by the mode-matching between the pump and oscillating beams. With a graphene sample as the saturable absorber, the pulsed optical vortex was achieved at the wavelength of 1.36 {\mu}m, which identified that graphene could be used as a pulse modulator for the generation of pulsed optical vortex. It could be believed that the thermally driven cw and pulsed optical vortex should have various promising applications based on the compact structure, changeable topological charges and specific wavelength, Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We report on a Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAlO3 laser gen-erating soliton pulses as short as 24 fs at 1085 nm with an average output power of 186 mW and a pulse repeti-tion rate of 87.5 MHz, representing the shortest pulses ever achieved from any mode-locked laser based on Yb3+-doped structurally ordered crystal. Optimized for power-scalable operation, the Yb:YAlO3 laser delivers 1.9 W at 1060 nm at the expense of a longer pulse duration of 44 fs, correspond-ing to a peak power of 462 kW and an optical efficiency of 43.2%.(c) 2022 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract

Structured ultrashort-pulse laser beams, and in particular eigenmodes of the paraxial Helmholtz equation, are currently extensively studied for novel potential applications in various fields, e.g., laser plasma acceleration, attosecond science, and fine micromachining. To extend these prospects further, in the present work we push forward the advancement of such femtosecond structured laser sources into the 2-mu m spectral region. Ultrashortpulse Hermite- and Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes both with a pulse duration around 100 fs are successfully produced from a compact solid-state laser in combination with a simple single-cylindrical-lens converter. The negligible beam astigmatism, the broad optical spectra, and the almost chirp-free pulses emphasize the high reliability of this laser source. This work, as a proof of principle study, paves the way toward few-cycle pulse generation of optical vortices at 2 mu m. The presented light source can enable new research in the fields of interaction with organic materials, next generation optical detection, and optical vortex infrared supercontinuum. Abstract

We report on the development of a novel laser crystal with broadband emission properties at similar to 2 mu m - a Tm3+, Li+-codoped calcium tantalum gallium garnet (Tm:CLTGG). The crystal is grown by the Czochralski method. Its structure (cubic, sp. gr . la (3) over bard, a = 12.5158(0) angstrom) is refined by the Rietveld method. Tm:CLTGG exhibits a relatively high thermal conductivity of 4.33 Wm(-1) K-1. Raman spectroscopy confirms a weak concentration of vacancies due to the charge compensation provided by Li+ codoping. The transition probabilities of Tm3+ ions are determined using the modified Judd-Ofelt theory yielding the intensity parameters Omega(2) = 5.185, Omega(4) = 0.650, Omega(6) = 1.068 [10(-20) cm(2)] and alpha = 0.171 [10(-4) cm]. The crystal-field splitting of the Tm3+ multiplets is revealed at 10 K. The first diode-pumped Tm:CLTGG laser generates 1.08 W at similar to 2 mu m with a slope efficiency of 23.8%. The Tm3+ ions in CLTGG exhibit significant inhomogeneous spectral broadening due to the structure disorder (a random distribution of Ta5+ and Ga3+ cations over octahedral and tetrahedral lattice sites) leading to smooth and broad gain profiles (bandwidth: 130 nm) extending well above 2 mu m and rendering Tm:CLTGG suitable for femtosecond pulse generation. Abstract

Sub-100 fs pulse generation from a passively mode-locked Tm,Ho-codoped cubic multicomponent disordered garnet laser at similar to 2 mu m is demonstrated. A single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorber is implemented to initiate and stabilize the soliton mode-locking. The Tm,Ho:LCLNGG (lanthanum calcium lithium niobium gallium garnet) laser generated pulses as short as 63 fs at a central wavelength of 2072.7 nm with an average output power of 63 mW at a pulse repetition rate of similar to 102.5 MHz. Higher average output power of 121 mW was obtained at the expense of longer pulse duration (96 fs) at 2067.6 nm using higher output coupling. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on mode-locked operation of the Tm,Ho:LCLNGG crystal. Abstract

We report on a high-power Ho:YAG single-crystal fiber (SCF) laser inband pumped by a high-brightness Tm-fiber laser at 1908 nm. The Ho:YAG SCF grown by the micro-pulling-down technique exhibits a propagation loss of 0.05 +/- 0.005 cm(-1) at 2.09 mu m. A continuous-wave output power of 35.2 W is achieved with a slope efficiency of 42.7%, which is to the best of our knowledge the highest power ever reported from an SCF-based laser in the 2 mu m spectral range.

Abstract

Passive mode locking of a Tm : LuYO3 ceramic laser in the 2 mu m spectral region is demonstrated by employing a single-walled carbon nanotube-saturable absorber. Almost chirp-free pulses as short as 57 fs, i.e., 8 optical cycles are produced at a repetition rate of 72.6 MHz (63 mW average power). The corresponding optical spectrum centered at 2045 nm, exhibits a bandwidth of 80 nm, which corresponds to almost chirp-free pulses. To the best of our knowledge, the results represent the shortest pulses generated by mode- locked Tm solid-state lasers. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Abstract

Bilayer graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition is successfully applied as a saturable absorber (SA) for the passive mode-locking of a Tm,Ho:CLNGG laser at 2093nm. Near transform-limited pulses as short as 70 fs, i.e., 10 optical cycles, are produced at a 89 MHz repetition rate with 69 mW average output power. To the best of our knowledge, these are the shortest pulses ever reported from graphene-SA mode-locked Tm, or Ho-lasers in the 2 µm spectral region, including bulk and fiber lasers.
