Bi(Te, Se)-based compounds have attracted lots of attention for nearly two centuries as one of the most successful commercial thermoelectric (TE) materials due to their high performance at near room temperature. Compared with 3D bulks, 2D thin films are more compatible with modern semiconductor technology and have unique advantages in the construction of micro- and nano-devices. For device applications, high average TE performance over the entire operating temperature range is critical. Herein, highly c-axis-oriented N-type Bi(Te, Se) epitaxial thin films have been successfully prepared using the pulsed laser deposition technology by adjusting the deposition temperature. The film deposited at ∼260 °C demonstrate a remarkable average power factor (PFave) of ∼24.4 μW·cm−1·K−2 over the temperature range of 305–470 K, higher than most of the state-of-the-art Bi(Te, Se)-based films. Moreover, the estimated average zT value of the film is as high as ∼0.81. We then constructed thin-film TE devices by using the above oriented Bi(Te, Se) films, and the maximum output power density of the device can reach up to ∼30.1 W/m2 under the temperature difference of 40 K. Predictably, the outstanding average TE performance of the highly oriented Bi(Te, Se) thin films will have an excellent panorama of applications in semiconductor cooling and power generation.

Cu3SbSe4, a copper-based sulfide free of rare earth elements, has received extensive attention in thermoelectric materials. However, its low carrier concentration restricts its widespread application. In this study, a microwave-assisted solution synthesis method was used to produce samples of Cu3SbSe4, which enabled the formation of CuSe in situ and increased the yield. Through the use of first-principles calculations, structural analysis, and performance evaluation, it was found that CuSe can enhance the carrier concentration and that induced nano-defects have a positive effect on reducing the lattice thermal conductivity. Moreover, doping with Sn decreases the band gap of the system and moves the Fermi level into the valence band, increasing the carrier concentration to 1.15 × 10−20 cm−3. Finally, the zT value of the Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 sample was achieved at 1.05 at 623 K when the theoretical yield of a single synthesis was 10 mmol.

With the continuous evolution of the coronavirus, the Omicron variant has gradually replaced the Delta variant as the prevalent strain. Their inducing epidemics last longer, have a higher number of asymptomatic cases, and are more serious. In this article, we proposed a nonautonomous time-delayed susceptible-infected-removed (NATD-SIR) model to predict them in different regions of China. We obtained the maximum and its time of current infected persons, the final size, and the end time of COVID-19 epidemics from January 2022 in China. The method of the fifth-order moving average was used to preprocess the time series of the numbers of current infected and removed cases to obtain more accurate parameter estimations. We found that usually the transmission rate $ \beta(t) $ was a piecewise exponential decay function, but due to multiple bounces in Shanghai City, $ \beta(t) $ was approximately a piecewise quadratic function. In most regions, the removed rate $ \gamma(t) $ was approximately equal to a piecewise linear increasing function of (a*t+b)*H(t-k), but in a few areas, $ \gamma(t) $ displayed an exponential increasing trend. For cases where the removed rate cannot be obtained, we proposed a method for setting the removed rate, which has a good approximation. Using the numerical solution, we obtained the prediction results of the epidemics. By analyzing those important indicators of COVID-19, we provided valuable suggestions for epidemic prevention and control and the resumption of work and production.

Hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) materials are typically formed by the self-assembly of small organic units (synthons) with specific functional groups through hydrogen bonding or other interactions. HOF is commonly used as an electrolyte for batteries. Well-designed HOF materials can enhance the proton exchange rate, thereby boosting battery performance. This paper reviews recent advancements in the continuous synthesis of HOF synthons, in the continuous synthesis of HOF’s unit small molecules enabling the multi-step, rapid, and in situ synthesis of synthons, such as carboxylic acid, diaminotriazine (DAT), urea, guanidine, imidazole, pyrazole, pyridine, thiazole, triazole, and tetrazole, with online monitoring. Continuous flow reactors facilitate fast chemical reactions and precise microfluidic control, offering superior reaction speed, product yield, and selectivity compared to batch processes. Integrating the continuous synthesis of synthons with the construction of HOF materials on a single platform is essential for achieving low-cost, safe, and efficient processing, especially for reactions involving toxic, flammable, or explosive substances.

Rhododendron fortunei (Ericaceae) possesses valuable horticultural and medicinal values. However, the genomic information on R. fortunei is very limited. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome (cp) of R. fortunei was assembled and annotated, SSR loci were characterised, comparative genomic analysis was carried out, and phylogenetic research was also performed. The results showed that the R. fortunei cp genome was of a typical quadripartite structure (200,997 bp). The lengths of the large single copy region (LSC), the inverted repeat regions (IR), and the small single copy region (SSC) were 109,151 bp, 2,604 bp, and 44,619 bp, respectively. A total of 147 unique genes were identified, including 99 protein-coding genes, 42 tRNA genes, and 6 rRNA genes, respectively. Leucine (11.51%) and cysteine (1.15%) were the highest and lowest representative amino acids, respectively. The total of 30 codons with obvious codon usage bias were all A/U-ending codons. Among the 77 simple sequence repeats, the majority were mononucleotide A/T repeats located in the intergenic spacer region. Five gene regions showed high levels of nucleotide diversity (Pi > 0.03). The comparative genome analysis revealed 7 hotspot intergenic regions (trnI-rpoB, trnTrpl16, rpoA-psbJ, rps7-rrn16, ndhI-rps16, rps16-rps19, and rrn16-trnI), showing great potential as molecular makers for species authentication. Expansion and contraction were detected in the IR region of the R. fortunei cp genome. In the phylogenetic tree, R. fortunei was closely related to R. platypodum. This research will be beneficial for evolutionary and genetic diversity studies of R. fortunei and related species among the Ericaceae family.

The azalea (Rhododendron simsii Planch.) is an important ornamental woody plant with various medicinal properties due to its phytochemical compositions and components. However little information on the metabolite variation during flower development in Rhododendron has been provided. In our study, a comparative analysis of the flavonoid profile was performed in Rhododendron pulchrum sweet at three stages of flower development, bud (stage 1), partially open flower (stage 2), and full bloom (stage 3). A total of 199 flavonoids, including flavone, flavonol, flavone C-glycosides, flavanone, anthocyanin, and isoflavone were identified. In hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), the accumulation of flavonoids displayed a clear development stage variation. During flower development, 78 differential accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were identified, and most were enriched to higher levels at the full bloom stage. A total of 11 DAMs including flavone (chrysin, chrysoeriol O-glucuronic acid, and chrysoeriol O-hexosyl-O-pentoside), isoflavone (biochanin A), and flavonol (3,7-di-O-methyl quercetin and isorhamnetin) were significantly altered at three stages. In particular, 3,7-di-O-methyl quercetin was the top increased metabolite during flower development. Furthermore, integrative analyses of metabolomic and transcriptomic were conducted, revealing that the contents of isoflavone, biochanin A, glycitin, and prunetin were correlated with the expression of 2-hydroxyisoflavanone dehydratase (HIDH), which provide insight into the regulatory mechanism that controls isoflavone biosynthesis in R. pulchrum. This study will provide a new reference for increasing desired metabolites effectively by more accurate or appropriate genetic engineering strategies.

Rhododendron mariesii Hemsley et Wilson, 1907, a typical member of the family Ericaeae, possesses valuable medicinal and horticultural properties. In this research, the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of R. mariesii was sequenced and assembled, which proved to be a typical quadripartite structure with the length of 203,480 bp. In particular, the lengths of the large single copy region (LSC), small single copy region (SSC), and inverted repeat regions (IR) were 113,715 bp, 7,953 bp, and 40,918 bp, respectively. Among the 151 unique genes, 98 were protein-coding genes, 8 were tRNA genes, and 45 were rRNA genes. The structural characteristics of the R. mariesii cp genome was similar to other angiosperms. Leucine was the most representative amino acid, while cysteine was the lowest representative. Totally, 30 codons showed obvious codon usage bias, and most were A/U-ending codons. Six highly variable regions were observed, such as trnK-pafI and atpE-rpoB, which could serve as potential markers for future barcoding and phylogenetic research of R. mariesii species. Coding regions were more conserved than non-coding regions. Expansion and contraction in the IR region might be the main length variation in R. mariesii and related Ericaeae species. Maximum-likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analysis revealed that R. mariesii was relatively closed to the R. simsii Planchon, 1853 and R. pulchrum Sweet,1831. This research will supply rich genetic resource for R. mariesii and related species of the Ericaeae.

Abstract The conventional single variable indirect model predictive control (SIMPC) of LCL‐type three‐level grid‐ connected inverter (GCI) is to indirectly control the grid current by controlling the output current of the inverter, which usually produces large errors and reduces the system anti‐disturbance performance. Although the previously proposed multivariable weighted model predictive control (MWMPC) method of LCL‐type GCI can directly control many variables, such as grid current, it requires setting the weight coefficient for each variable and involves a substantial amount of calculation. To due with these problems, this paper proposes a multivariable sequential model predictive control (MSMPC) method for LCL‐type three‐level GCI. The inverter output current, the filter capacitor voltage, and the grid current are gradually predicted and optimized under the variable control sequence of the LCL‐type GCI mathematical model. Under the premise of achieving direct control of the variables above, this method can reduce the number of weighting coefficients and gradually contract the optimization space to reduce the computation required for multivariable prediction and optimization. This paper compares the proposed MSMPC to the conventional SIMPC and MWMPC in steady state, transient state performance, and anti‐disturbance performance. The effectiveness of the proposed MSMPC is demonstrated through simulation and experimentation.

【Objective】The study was carried out to identify the SmTCP gene and analyze the members of SmTCP transcription factor family in eggplant. The determination of its expression under stress and hormone treatment laid a foundation for further study of the function of SmTCP gene in eggplant.【Method】The members of SmTCP gene family were identified from the eggplant genome. The physicochemical properties and distribution of members of SmTCP transcription factor family in eggplant were analyzed by bioinformatics methods. Eggplant seedlings were treated with high temperature (42 ℃), low temperature (4℃), salt stress (200 μmol/L NaCl solution), heavy metal (100 μmol/L CdCl2 solution), Pseudomonas solanacearum, salicylic acid and abscisic acid. The expression of SmTCP gene in eggplant under seven treatments was analyzed by qRT-PCR.【Result】A total of 32 SmTCP members were identified and analyzed by bioinformatics method. The results of qRT-PCR analysis showed that the SmTCP gene of eggplant was up-regulated in response to biological and environmental stress. Under hormone treatment, the SmTCP of eggplant was up-regulated generally after ABA treatment, and the SmTCP of eggplant was down-regulated generally after SA treatment. The contents of SmTCP in leaves and fruits were higher.【Conclusion】It was found that the SmTCP gene of eggplant express in response to stress. The expression of different SmTCP members in response to stress and the expression levels in various organs are different. Most of the Class I TCP members of eggplant are significantly up-regulated under heat stress. Therefore, it is speculated that the SmTCP gene of eggplant may be involved in resisting adversity stress.

Abstract Background Being physically active is important for cardiovascular health. This study aimed to examine the trend in adherence to the physical activity guidelines (PAG) for aerobic activity among US adults with a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and evaluated its association with cardiovascular risk factors. Methods We studied participants from the national health and nutrition examination survey 2007–08 to 2017–18. Regression models were used to evaluate the significance of the trend and the association between adherence to the PAG with cardiovascular risk factors. Results A total of 3638 participants were reported to have a history of CVD. The proportion of adherence to PAG significantly increased from 41.5% in 2007–08 to 54.3% in 2017–18. Males had a higher proportion of adherence compared to the females, while the trend in adherence was only significant in females. Adherence to the PAG was significantly associated with decreased levels of waist circumference, body mass index, hemoglobin A1c, and triglycerides. Conclusions There is a significant increase in the proportion of adherence to the PAG among US adults with a history of CVD from 2007–08 to 2017–18, and adherence to the PAG was associated with improvement in cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract Background This study was performed to develop and validate machine learning models for early detection of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) 24 h before diagnosis, so that VAP patients can receive early intervention and reduce the occurrence of complications. Patients and methods This study was based on the MIMIC-III dataset, which was a retrospective cohort. The random forest algorithm was applied to construct a base classifier, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity and specificity of the prediction model were evaluated. Furthermore, We also compare the performance of Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS)-based model (threshold value ≥ 3) using the same training and test data sets. Results In total, 38,515 ventilation sessions occurred in 61,532 ICU admissions. VAP occurred in 212 of these sessions. We incorporated 42 VAP risk factors at admission and routinely measured the vital characteristics and laboratory results. Five-fold cross-validation was performed to evaluate the model performance, and the model achieved an AUC of 84% in the validation, 74% sensitivity and 71% specificity 24 h after intubation. The AUC of our VAP machine learning model is nearly 25% higher than the CPIS model, and the sensitivity and specificity were also improved by almost 14% and 15%, respectively. Conclusions We developed and internally validated an automated model for VAP prediction using the MIMIC-III cohort. The VAP prediction model achieved high performance based on its AUC, sensitivity and specificity, and its performance was superior to that of the CPIS model. External validation and prospective interventional or outcome studies using this prediction model are envisioned as future work.

ABSTRACT: (–)-Epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), a bioactive polyphenolic compound, has contributed a lot to the health benefits of green tea. Great attention has been focused on (–)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), but limited research has been performed towards ECG. Like EGCG, ECG also possesses various pharmacological and physiological properties, such as mediation of antioxidant activities, anti-inflammation response, regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis, as well as anticancer properties during angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis stages. Nontoxic ECG has various molecular targets within the cells, including CYP enzymes, phase II detoxification and antioxidant enzymes, as well as pro-inflammatory mediators. The antineoplastic mechanism contains inhibition of phase 1 CYP enzymes, induction of phase II detoxification and antioxidant enzymes, high anti-inflammatory efficacy, arrest of cell cycle progression, regulation of apoptosis, as well as mediation of metastasis processes. In particular, the gallate moiety of ECG is critical for mediating inhibitory effects towards cancer cells. Besides regulation of intracellular signaling pathways, ECG also inhibits RNase A and matrix metalloproteinase enzymatic activity via chelating metals (copper and zinc) in cancer cells. This review has summarized recent studies on pharmacological properties of ECG, and discussed corresponding mechanism on modulation of cellular signaling events by ECG, hoping to broaden its multiple usage.

Type I photodynamic therapy (PDT) sensitizers show good hypoxia tolerance but only few strategies are available for the design of purely organic Type I photosensitizers (PS). Here, the authors use biotinylation as design strategy to obtain PS-Biotin sensitizers with high efficiency for the generation of superoxide anion radicals and singlet oxygen.

NBS-LRR genes constitute one of the largest resistance gene families in plants, which play key roles in resistance to pathogens. Although the identification and characterization of the NBS-LRR gene family has been extensively reported in various species, a comprehensive analysis in eggplant has not been previously documented. In this study, a total of 269 SmNBS genes were identified in the eggplant genome. Based on domain classification and phylogenetic analysis, SmNBSs were divided into three subgroups 231 CNLs (CC-NBS-LRR), 36 TNLs (TIR-NBS-LRR), and 2 RNLs (RPW8-NBS-LRR). Chromosomal mapping analysis revealed an uneven distribution of SmNBSs in clusters across chromosomes, with a predominant presence on chromosomes 10, 11, and 12. Structural analysis identified eight conserved motifs previously reported in SmNBSs, exhibiting high conservation in both amino acid sequences and their order. Evolutionary analysis demonstrated that tandem duplication events mainly contributed to the expansion of SmNBS. Subsequently, qRT-PCR analysis demonstrated that nine SmNBSs exhibited differential expression patterns in response to R. solanacearum stress, with EGP05874.1 potentially involved in the resistance response. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive insight into SmNBSs, which will enhance the research on eggplant disease resistance and facilitate the breeding of new disease-resistant varieties.

The iron oxychloride/pillared montmorillonite (FeOCl/MMT) catalyst was prepared by wet impregnation method and solid melting method. Various characterization techniques were used to analyze the microscopic morphology and structure of a series of catalysts. Moreover, the catalysts were used to treat magenta-simulated dye wastewater through catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) degradation. The magenta removal rate and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of the magenta-simulated dye wastewater were used to evaluate the catalytic performance of the catalyst, and the optimal catalyst preparation conditions were selected. The results showed that the solid melting method was more favorable to the preparation of the catalyst, and the COD removal rate of wastewater can reach 70.8% when the FeOCl load was 3%. Moreover, 96.2% of the magenta in the solution was removed. The COD removal rate of the magenta wastewater decreased by only 12.4% after the catalyst was repeatedly used six times, indicating that the catalyst has good activity and stability. The Fermi equation can simulate the reaction process of the catalyst treating magenta wastewater at high temperature. HIGHLIGHTS Loading FeOCl on montmorillonite with Al-pillar support to treat magenta-simulated wastewater.; Determining the optimal preparation conditions of the catalyst and finding that only a small amount of Fe ions leached in repeat experiments.; The mechanism of the CWPO reaction was explored, and the free radical groups that play an important role in the reaction was found.;

Peel color is one of the most important appearance qualities of eggplant. The main pigment in the peel of green-fruited eggplant is chlorophyll, while white-fruited eggplant is a mutant of chlorophyll biosynthesis. A dominant gene Gv controls chlorophyll biosynthesis in eggplant peel, but none of its genes have been mapped. In this study, the white-peel inbred line 19141, the green-peel inbred line 19143, and their F2 progeny with 3:1 segregation ratio of green-peel plants to white-peel plants, were used to map the Gv1 locus by whole genome re-sequencing combined with bulked segregant analysis (BSA). The Gv1 gene was mapped in a region spanning 7.66 Mb on chromosome 8, which was narrowed down to 173.2 kb interval by screening recombinant plants with InDel and SNP markers. Sixteen candidate genes were annotated in the above closely associated region. With the aid of RNA-Seq data, it was speculated that SmAPPR2-like is the candidate gene for Gv1. The results of cloning and sequencing of SmAPPR2-like showed that there might have been three types of mutation (large deletion, frameshift variant and premature stop codon) in white-peel accessions, and of these, the deletion mutation, such as that in inbred line 19141, was the most common. Based on the sequence difference of SmAPPR2-like, molecular markers were developed to distinguish the white and green-peel accessions in natural eggplant populations, and the other types of genetic variations of SmAPPR2-like leading to white-peel accessions were elucidated. The present study not only provided reliable markers for MAS (marker-assisted selection) breeding for eggplant peel color, but also paved the way for understanding the molecular mechanism of SmAPPR2-like on chlorophyll biosynthesis in eggplant fruit.

Element doping and nano-inclusion embedding are effective approaches to enhance the electrical conductivities and decrease the lattice thermal conductivities of thermoelectric (TE) materials, respectively. However, the intrinsic low electrical thermal conductivities and high electrical properties are severely sacrificed, and the final figure of merit (ZT) is usually restricted. In this study, Ag doping and Pt quantum dot (QD) embedding were synchronously achieved via embedding Ag/Pt alloy QDs into the higher manganese silicides to avoid the conventional single-element doping strategy. The power factor (at 823 K) was enhanced from 1.57 × 10−3 W m−1 K−2 to 1.82 × 10−3 W m−1 K−2 (∼16%) due to the ∼18% increase in carrier concentration that was derived from the Ag doping effect. Simultaneously, the lattice thermal conductivity (at 823 K) decreased from 2.65 W m−1 K−1–1.92 W m−1 K−1 (∼28%) because of the broadband phonon scattering effect that resulted from the residual Pt QDs inclusions. Synthetically, the optimal ZT value increased by ∼52% from 0.42 to 0.64 at 823 K. This study demonstrated that incorporating metastable alloy QDs to obtain element doping and nano-inclusion embedding effects is a novel and feasible means to enhance the ZT value of HMS. This method is also possibly applicable to other alloy QD/TE composites.

Abstract Background Soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L) exhibits proinflammatory and procoagulant effects. Recent data indicated that sCD40L plays a significant role in septic patients. The aim of the present study was to determine sCD40L changes in surgical patients without sepsis (SWS) and surgical sepsis patients (SS) during the first 3 days after intensive care unit (ICU) admission and to observe the association between sCD40L and mortality. Methods Time changes in sCD40L levels were assessed for 3 days after ICU admission in 49 patients with SS and compared with those in 19 SWS patients. Serum sCD40L concentration was detected by ELISA. Survival at 28 days served as the endpoint. Results SS had significantly higher sCD40L levels than SWS and control patients. We observed an association between sCD40L levels ≥1028.75 pg/mL at day 2 and 28-day mortality (odds ratio = 7.888; 95% confidence interval = 1.758 to 35.395; P = 0.007). We could not discover any significant differences in sex, presence of septic shock, site of infection, length of stay in the ICU, PaO2/FiO2 ratio, incidence of AKI, ARDS, or type of surgery between nonsurvivors and survivors. Conclusions Septic patients show persistently higher circulating sCD40L levels in the first 3 days after ICU admission, and serum sCD40L levels are associated with the mortality of patients with sepsis. Thus, serum sCD40L may be used as a reliable biomarker and therapeutic target in sepsis.

Non-covalent interactions have been extensively used to fabricate nanoscale architectures in supramolecular chemistry. However, the biomimetic self-assembly of diverse nanostructures in aqueous solution with reversibility induced by different important biomolecules remains a challenge. Here, we report the synthesis and aqueous self-assembly of two chiral cationic porphyrins substituted with different types of side chains (branched or linear). Helical H-aggregates are induced by pyrophosphate (PPi) as indicated by circular dichroism (CD) measurement, while J-aggregates are formed with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for the two porphyrins. By modifying the peripheral side chains from linear to a branched structure, more pronounced H- or J-type aggregation was promoted through the interactions between cationic porphyrins and the biological phosphate ions. Moreover, the phosphate-induced self-assembly of the cationic porphyrins is reversible in the presence of the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and repeated addition of phosphates.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a major blindness-causing disease that is characterized by an arrest of normal vascular development and neovascularization of the retina. Previous studies have shown that genetic factors may be associated with the development and severity of ROP. However, the genes and mechanisms underlying ROP remain unclear. We aimed to identify hub genes in ROP and drugs related to these genes by integrative analysis. The expression profiles of GSE158799 and GSE135844 were acquired from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Then, an integrative analysis was performed including Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, transcription factor (TF)-gene, and miRNA-gene networks analysis. Moreover, we verified hub genes and identified potential drugs. 225 common DEGs were identified. Biological function analysis indicated that angiogenesis, cell surface, cell adhesion, extracellular matrix, and focal adhesion genes were enriched among DEGs. The PI3K/Akt signalingpathway, focal adhesion, and extracellular matrix (ECM)-receptor interaction were markedly enriched in the KEGG pathway analysis. Finally, 5 hub genes related to the nosogenesis of ROP were identified and found to be targeted by VEGFA inhibitors, TLR4 antagonists, and sunitinib. The present study showed that VEGFA, ACTA2, MKI67, CD68, and TLR4 are potential hub genes involved in the pathogenesis of ROP. Moreover, TLR4 antagonists and sunitinib may be new candidate drugs for ROP therapy, in addition to VEGFA inhibitors.

To eliminate the false alarms in the ship target detection effectively for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in complex scenes, this article present a novel ship target discrimination algorithm based on bag of words (BOW) model with multiple features and spatial pyramid matching (SPM), which is named MF-SPM-BOW. The proposed discrimination method mainly contains three stages. First, the SAR scale-invariant feature transform (SAR-SIFT) descriptors and gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) descriptors are extracted as local features to describe the gradient information and texture information of local regions of an image chip. Then, the SPM technique considering its spatial location information-keeping capability is employed to generate global features with excellent discrimination ability. Finally, the support vector machine (SVM) discriminator based on multiple kernel learning is applied to realize feature fusion in image layer and thus identify targets and clutter. Experimental results show that compared with the traditional discrimination methods and the BOW model discrimination methods, the proposed SAR ship target discrimination algorithm achieves better discrimination performance, which can eliminate most of the false alarms in candidate ship target chips effectively.

Accurate localization is critical in the internet of things (IOT), especially for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Location estimation can be affected by factors such as node density, topological diversity, and sensor coverage. As such, we propose a hybrid approach using multistage collaborative calibration for wireless sensor network localization, specifically in 3D environments. This technique integrates a Modified version of Light Gradient Boosting Model (MLGB), which is based on a regression scheme, a cooperative methodology, and a fine calibration model for collaborative fusion. These techniques were combined with quadrilateral shrunk centroid (QSC) and distance vector hop algorithms, using a multi-communication radius and an improved frog-leaping algorithm (DVMFL). In the first step, MLGB was used to correct for inhomogeneous localization estimation errors and RSSI data sparsity. As a result, the model is capable of adapting to high topological diversity (i.e., C-shape, H-shape, S-shape, and O-shape).Successive steps further improved prediction accuracy by using a screening cooperative anchor node strategy to increase node density and enhance the QSC-DVMFL fusion framework for fine position estimation. The proposed methodology was assessed in a series of validation, comparing it to other techniques. The results demonstrated a clear effectiveness and adaptability across a variety of factors that typically affect WSN localization.

Cloud occlusion is an important factor affecting flight safety and scientific observation. The calculation of Cloud Occlusion Probability (COP) is significant for the planning of the flight time and route of aircraft. Based on Himawari-8 and CloudSat satellite data, we propose a method to calculate the COP. The COP statistics were carried out on different distances in 12 directions 6 km above Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA), at different heights and directions in the Haiyang aerostat production base, and at different times and seasons in Mount Qomolangma. It was found that the COP going in the southern direction from BCIA was greater than that in the northern direction by 0.67–3.12%, which is consistent with the climate conditions of Beijing. In Haiyang, the COP for several seasons in the direction of land was higher than in the direction of the ocean. The maximum COP for the 6 km altitude is 29.63% (summer) and the minimum COP is 7.59% (winter). The aerostat flight test can be conducted in the morning of winter and the direction of the ocean. The best scientific observation time for Mount Qomolangma is between 02:00 and 05:00 UTC in spring. With the increase in altitude, the COP gradually decreases. The research in this paper provides essential support for flight planning.

ObjectiveRegenerative therapy using mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) is a promising therapeutic method for critical limb ischemia (CLI). To understand how the cells are involved in the regenerative process of limb ischemia locally, we proposed a metabolic protein labeling method to label cell proteomes in situ and then decipher the proteome dynamics of MSCs in ischemic hind limb.Methods and ResultsIn this study, we overexpressed mutant methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MetRS), which could utilize azidonorleucine (ANL) instead of methionine (Met) during protein synthesis in MSCs. Fluorescent non-canonical amino-acid tagging (FUNCAT) was performed to detect the utilization of ANL in mutant MSCs. Mice with hindlimb ischemia (HLI) or Sham surgery were treated with MetRSmut MSCs or PBS, followed by i.p. administration of ANL at days 0, 2 6, and 13 after surgery. FUNCAT was also performed in hindlimb tissue sections to demonstrate the incorporation of ANL in transplanted cells in situ. At days 1, 3, 7, and 14 after the surgery, laser doppler imaging were performed to detect the blood reperfusion of ischemic limbs. Ischemic tissues were also collected at these four time points for histological analysis including HE staining and vessel staining, and processed for click reaction based protein enrichment followed by mass spectrometry and bioinformatics analysis. The MetRSmut MSCs showed strong green signal in cell culture and in HLI muscles as well, indicating efficient incorporation of ANL in nascent protein synthesis. By 14 days post-treatment, MSCs significantly increased blood reperfusion and vessel density, while reducing inflammation in HLI model compared to PBS. Proteins enriched by click reaction were distinctive in the HLI group vs. the Sham group. 34, 31, 49, and 26 proteins were significantly up-regulated whereas 28, 32, 62, and 27 proteins were significantly down-regulated in HLI vs. Sham at days 1, 3, 7, and 14, respectively. The differentially expressed proteins were more pronounced in the pathways of apoptosis and energy metabolism.ConclusionIn conclusion, mutant MetRS allows efficient and specific identification of dynamic cell proteomics in situ, which reflect the functions and adaptive changes of MSCs that may be leveraged to understand and improve stem cell therapy in critical limb ischemia.

The present study aims to investigate intrinsic abnormalities of brain and the effect of antiepileptic treatment on brain activity in Benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS). Twenty-six drug-naïve patients (DNP) and 22 drug-receiving patients (DRP) with BECTS were collected in this study. Static amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (sALFF) and dynamic ALFF (dALFF) were applied to resting-state fMRI data. Functional connectivity (FC) analysis was further performed for affected regions identified by static and dynamic analysis. One-way analysis of variance and post hoc statistical analyses were performed for between-group differences. Abnormal sALFF and dALFF values were correlated with clinical features of patients. Compared with healthy controls (HC), DNP group demonstrated alterations of sALFF and/or dALFF in medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), supplementary motor areas (SMA), cerebellum, hippocampus, pallidum and cingulate cortex, in which the values were close to normal in DRP. Notably, sALFF and dALFF showed specific sensitivity in detecting abnormalities in basal ganglia and cerebellum. Additionally, DRP showed additional changes in precuneus, inferior temporal gyrus, superior frontal gyrus and occipital visual cortex. Compared with HC, the DNP showed increased FC in default network and motion-related networks, and the DRP showed decreased FC in default network. The MPFC, hippocampus, SMA, basal ganglia and cerebellum are indicated to be intrinsically affected regions and effective therapeutic targets. And the FC profiles of default and motion-related networks might be potential core indicators for clinical treatment. This study revealed potential neuromodulatory targets and helped understand pathomechanism of BECTS. Static and dynamic analyses should be combined to investigate neuropsychiatric disorders.

A new type of dual‐wideband bandpass filter using composite series and shunt resonators is proposed in conjunction with its direct synthesis and design theory. By making use of the transmission pole (TP) and the transmission zero of the composite resonators flexibly, a dual‐wideband filter with a wide range of frequency and bandwidth ratios as well as a wide stopband can be realised. With a shunt capacitor introduced at each I/O port, extra TPs either in the low passband or in the high passband can be created, leading to more filter design options. To give a direct design procedure, a lumped‐element prototype is first synthesised based on a target filtering function and a dedicated circuit extraction process. The filter layout can be realised using semi‐distributed circuits and chip capacitors. Two practical schemes are introduced to suppress spurious resonances for a wide high‐rejection stopband. Two filter examples are designed with a small and a large frequency ratio and a wide band suppressed spurious resonances. The unique filter response and good agreement between the designed and measured results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed filter structure and the effectiveness of the synthesis and design theory.

Cloud cover is an important factor limiting the earth observation efficiency of optical imaging satellites. Existing solutions include avoiding cloudy observation time windows by onboard cloud detectors and ground monitors, which are difficult to improve satellite observation efficiency in time. In order to solve the problem, firstly, a Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites cooperation scheme by using cloud cover information provided by GEO meteorological satellite to guide the imaging of LEO optical satellites is proposed, and the operation flow and key elements in this scheme are analyzed. Secondly, Fengyun-4 GEO meteorological satellite and its cloud mask (CLM) products are analyzed. Thirdly, an autonomous mission planning algorithm based on real-time cloud cover information is proposed. Computational results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed GEO–LEO satellites cooperation scheme by taking the actual orbit and payload data of Fengyun-4 and Gaofen-1/2 satellites as examples.

The difficulty of atmospheric correction based on a radiative transfer model lies in the acquisition of synchronized atmospheric parameters, especially the aerosol optical depth (AOD). At the moment, there is no fully automatic and high-efficiency atmospheric correction method to make full use of the advantages of geostationary meteorological satellites in large-scale and efficient atmospheric monitoring. Therefore, a QUantitative and Automatic Atmospheric Correction (QUAAC) method is proposed which can efficiently correct high-spatial-resolution (HSR) satellite images. QUAAC uses the atmospheric aerosol products of geostationary satellites to match the synchronized AOD according to the temporal and spatial information of HSR satellite images. This method solves the problem that the AOD is difficult to obtain or the accuracy is not high enough to meet the demand of atmospheric correction. By using the obtained atmospheric parameters, atmospheric correction is performed to obtain the surface reflectance (SR). The whole process can achieve fully automatic operation without manual intervention. After QUAAC applied to Gaofen-2 (GF-2) HSR satellite and Himawari-8 (H-8) geostationary satellite, the results show that the effect of QUAAC correction is slightly better than that of the Fast Line-of-sight Atmospheric Analysis of Spectral Hypercubes (FLAASH) correction, and the QUAAC−corrected surface spectral curves have good coherence to that of the synchronously measured by field experiments.

Momordica charantia L., a member of the Curcubitaceae family, has traditionally been used as herbal medicine and as a vegetable. Functional ingredients of M. charantia play important roles in body health and human nutrition, which can be used directly or indirectly in treating or preventing hyperglycemia-related chronic diseases in humans. The hypoglycemic effects of M. charantia have been known for years. In this paper, the research progress of M. charantia phytobioactives and their hypoglycemic effects and related mechanisms, especially relating to diabetes mellitus, has been reviewed. Moreover, the clinical application of M. charantia in treating diabetes mellitus is also discussed, hoping to broaden the application of M. charantia as functional food.

Background/Aims: Recent studies indicate that therapies targeting the vasculature can significantly sensitize tumors to radiation. Ultrasound-stimulated microbubbles (USMBs) are regarded as a promising radiosensitizer. In this study, we investigated the effect of USMBs on the sensitivity of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) to radiation. Methods: Human NPC (CNE-2) cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were exposed to radiation (0, 2, and 8 Gy) alone or in combination with USMBs. Cell viability and apoptosis were measured with the MTT assay and flow cytometry, respectively. The angiogenic activity of HUVECs was detected using matrigel tubule formation. The in vitro effects induced by these treatments were confirmed in vivo with xenograft models of CNE-2 cells in nude mice by examining vascular integrity using color Doppler flow imaging and cell survival using immunohistochemistry. Additionally, the in vivo and in vitro expressions of angiotensin II (ANG II) and its receptor (AT1R) were detected by immunohistochemistry and western blotting, respectively. With CNE-2 cells and HUVECs transfected with control, ANG II, or AT1R, perindopril (an inhibitor of angiotensin-converting enzyme) and candesartan (an inhibitor of AT1R) were used to verify the role of ANG II and AT1R in the radiosensitivity of tumor and endothelial cells by USMBs, by determining cell viability and apoptosis and angiogenic activity. Results: In the NPC xenografts, USMBs slightly reduced blood flow and CD34 expression, increased tumor cell death and ANG II and AT1R expression, and significantly enhanced the effects of radiation. With CNE-2 cells and HUVECs, the USMBs further enhanced the inhibition of tumor cell viability and endothelial tubule formation and further enhanced the increase in ANG II and AT1R due to radiation. Furthermore, perindopril and candesartan significantly enhanced the inhibitory effect of radiation and USMBs on tumor cell growth and angiogenesis in vitro. Conclusions: We have demonstrated for the first time that USMB exposure can significantly enhance the destructive effect on NPC of radiation, and this effect might be further increased by ANG II and AT1R inhibition. Our findings suggest that USMBs can be used as a promising sensitizer of radiotherapy to treat NPC, and the clinical effect might be increased by ANG II and AT1R inhibition.

Lindera praecox is a signature composition in the broadleaved deciduous forest of East China and Japan. Presently, the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of this species was sequenced, assembled, and annotated. It is 152,818 bp in length and encodes 85 protein-coding genes, 36 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes and eight ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The phylogenetic analysis indicated intraspecific varieties within L. praecox species collected in China and Japan. This chloroplast genome sequencing offers genetic background for resources conservation and phylogenetic studies.

Puerarin (PUR), an 8-C-glucoside of daidzein extracted from Pueraria plants, is closely related to autophagy, reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and anti-inflammatory effects, but its effects on human nucleus pulposus mesenchymal stem cells (NPMSCs) have not yet been identified. In this study, NPMSCs were cultured in a compression apparatus to simulate the microenvironment of the intervertebral disc under controlled pressure (1.0 MPa), and we found that cell viability was decreased and apoptosis level was gradually increased as compression duration was prolonged. After PUR administration, apoptosis level evaluated by flow cytometry and caspase-3 activity was remitted, and protein levels of Bas as well as cleaved caspase-3 were decreased, while elevated Bcl-2 level was identified. Moreover, ATP production detection, ROS, and JC-1 fluorography as well as quantitative analysis suggested that PUR could attenuate intercellular ROS accumulation and mitochondrial dysfunction. Besides, the rat tail compression model was utilized, which indicated that PUR could restore impaired nucleus pulposus degeneration induced by compression. The PI3K/Akt pathway was identified to be deactivated after compression stimulation by western blot, and PUR could rescue the phosphorylation of Akt, thus reactivating the pathway. The effects of PUR, such as antiapoptosis, cell viability restoration, antioxidation, and mitochondrial maintenance, were all counteracted by application of the PI3K/Akt pathway inhibitor (LY294002). Summarily, PUR could alleviate compression-induced apoptosis and cell death of human NPMSCs in vitro as well as on the rat compression model and maintain intracellular homeostasis by stabilizing mitochondrial membrane potential and attenuating ROS accumulation through activating the PI3K/Akt pathway.

Purpose. Acupuncture is an effective therapy for Internet addiction (IA). However, the underlying mechanisms of acupuncture in relieving compulsive Internet use remain unknown. Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated the role of the ventral striatum (VS) in the progress of IA; hence, the aim of this study was to explore the effects of acupuncture on the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and relevant network of VS in IA. Methods. Twenty-seven IA individuals and 30 demographically matched healthy control subjects (HCs) were recruited in this study. We acquired the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in IA subjects before and after 40 days of acupuncture treatment. Seed-to-voxel and ROI-to-ROI analyses were applied to detect the rsFC alterations of the VS and related network in IA subjects and to investigate the modulation effect of acupuncture on the rsFC. Results. Compared with HCs, IA subjects exhibited enhanced rsFC of the right ventral rostral putamen (VRP) with the left orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), premotor cortex (PMC), cerebellum, and right ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). In the network including these five ROIs, IA also showed increased ROI-to-ROI rsFC. Using a paired t-test in IA subjects before and after 40 days of acupuncture, the increased ROI-to-ROI rsFC was decreased (normalized to HC) with acupuncture, including the rsFC of the right VRP with the left OFC, PMC, and cerebellum, and the rsFC of the left cerebellum with the left OFC, PMC, and right vmPFC. Furthermore, the change in rsFC strength between the right VRP and left cerebellum in IA individuals was found positively correlated with the Internet craving alleviation after acupuncture. Conclusions. These findings verified the modulation effect of acupuncture on functional connectivity of reward and habit systems related to the VS in IA individuals, which might partly represent the underlying mechanisms of acupuncture on IA.

Altitude could greatly influence species distribution and even their genetic diversity. However, it is unclear how altitude has affected the genetic diversity and population structure of Rhododendron simsii Planch., an dominant forestry species in north temperate forest. In this research, 22 polymorphic EST-SSR markers were utilized to assess the genetic diversity of R. simsii population distributed at different altitudes of Wujiashan Mountain, a major peak of Dabie Mountains (central China). Totally, 203 alleles were obtained, and each locus gave out 5 to 19 alleles. High genetic diversity existed, as Nei’s gene diversity (h) and Shannon’s Information index (I) ranged from 0.728 to 0.920 and 1.430 to 2.690, with the mean value of 0.821 and 1.916, respectively. In particular, 11.1% of genetic differentiation was maintained between populations, while 88.9% occurred within populations. Moreover, moderate gene flow (2.001) among populations was observed, which could effectively resist genetic drift. The genetic diversity of all these five R. simsii populations varied significantly with elevation, basically showing high-low-high pattern with elevation increase. Without human intervention, genetic diversity of R. simsii populations might increase with the altitude. At the significance level (p < 0.05), negative correlation was found between genetic diversity and attenuation rate of light intensity (r=-0.873). Soil of Wujiashan Mountain was acid (the pH value ranged from 4.33 to 4.70), which was rich in organic matter, available phosphorus, available potassium, and alkali hydrolysable nitrogen, as these soil factors interacted with each other to affect the growth of R. simsii population. This research would contribute a lot to the knowledge of evolutionary history of R. simsii species and benefit subsequent management and conservation actions.

Internet addiction (IA) has become a global mental and social problem, which may lead to a series of psychiatric symptoms including uncontrolled use of internet, and lack of concentration. However, the exact pathophysiology of IA remains unclear. Most of functional connectivity studies were based on pre-selected regions of interest (ROI), which could not provide a comprehensive picture of the communication abnormalities in IA, and might lead to limited or bias observations. Using local functional connectivity density (lFCD), this study aimed to explore the whole-brain abnormalities of functional connectivity in IA. We evaluated the whole-brain lFCD resulting from resting-state fMRI data in 28 IA individuals and 30 demographically matched healthy control subjects (HCs). The correlations between clinical characteristics and aberrant lFCD were also assessed. Compared with HCs, subjects with IA exhibited heightened lFCD values in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), left parahippocampal gyrus (PHG), and cerebellum, and the bilateral middle cingulate cortex (MCC) and superior temporal pole (STP), as well as decreased lFCD values in the right inferior parietal lobe (IPL), and bilateral calcarine and lingual gyrus. Voxel-based correlation analysis revealed the significant correlations between the Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) score and altered lFCD values in the left PHG and bilateral STP. These findings revealed the hyper-connectivity in cognitive control network and default mode network as well as the hypo-connectivity in visual attention network, verifying the common mechanism in IA and substance addiction, and the underlying association between IA, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in terms of neurobiology.

Under high temperature stress, a large number of proteins in plant cells will be denatured and inactivated. Meanwhile Hsfs and Hsps will be quickly induced to remove denatured proteins, so as to avoid programmed cell death, thus enhancing the thermotolerance of plants. Here, a comprehensive identification and analysis of the Hsf and Hsp gene families in eggplant under heat stress was performed. A total of 24 Hsf-like genes and 117 Hsp-like genes were identified from the eggplant genome using the interolog from Arabidopsis. The gene structure and motif composition of Hsf and Hsp genes were relatively conserved in each subfamily in eggplant. RNA-seq data and qRT-PCR analysis showed that the expressions of most eggplant Hsf and Hsp genes were increased upon exposure to heat stress, especially in thermotolerant line. The comprehensive analysis indicated that different sets of SmHsps genes were involved downstream of particular SmHsfs genes. These results provided a basis for revealing the roles of SmHsps and SmHsp for thermotolerance in eggplant, which may potentially be useful for understanding the thermotolerance mechanism involving SmHsps and SmHsp in eggplant.

Green tea and its bioactive components, especially polyphenols, possess many health-promoting and disease-preventing benefits, especially anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and metabolic modulation effects with multi-target modes of action. However, the effect of tea polyphenols on immune function has not been well studied. Moreover, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms mediating immunoregulation are not well understood. This review summarizes the recent studies on the immune-potentiating effects and corresponding mechanisms of tea polyphenols, especially the main components of (–)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and (–)-epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG). In addition, the benefits towards immune-related diseases, such as autoimmune diseases, cutaneous-related immune diseases, and obesity-related immune diseases, have been discussed.

An explosive bolt is a simple, highly reliable, and efficient pyrotechnic release device widely used in spacecraft and rocket launchers. High shock transient response is generated during the separation of a release device, which tends to damage the nearby micromechanism and hardware. The purpose of this article is to predict the shock response of an explosive bolt. In this paper, the separation process of a piston-type explosive bolt is simulated by using a hydrocode named AUTODYN and the influence of the charge amount on separation time, separation speed, and separation shock is analyzed. Results show that piston-type explosive bolts obey a tensile fracture mechanism and that the critical charge amount for separation is 354–398 mg of PETN. The separation shock of such an explosive bolt mainly includes two aspects: the shock caused by explosive detonations and the impact of the piston at the end of the stroke. As the charge amount increases, the separation time decreases, the speed of the piston and screw increases first and then decreases, and the separation shock first increases and then stabilizes. On a simple aluminum plate, the shock response decreases as the distance from the shock source increases, obeying the power function attenuation law.

Background. Link protein N-terminal peptide (LPP) in extracellular matrix (ECM) of cartilage could induce synthesis of proteoglycans and collagen type II in cartilaginous cells. Cartilage stem/progenitor cells (CSPCs), the endogenous stem cells in cartilage, are important in cartilage degeneration and regeneration. We hypothesized that LPP could be a stimulator for stem cell-based cartilage regeneration by affecting biological behaviors of CSPC. Methods. CSPCs were isolated from rat knee cartilage. We evaluated the promoting effect of LPP on proliferation, migration, and chondrogenic differentiation of CSPCs. The chondrogenic differentiation-related genes and proteins were quantitated. Three-dimensional culture of CSPC was conducted in the presence of TGF-β3 or LPP, and the harvested pellets were analyzed to assess the function of LPP on cartilage regeneration. Results. LPP stimulated the proliferation of CSPC and accelerated the site-directional migration. Higher expression of SOX9, collagen II, and aggrecan were demonstrated in CSPCs treated with LPP. The pellets treated with LPP showed more distinct characteristics of chondroid differentiation than those with TGF-β3. Conclusion. LPP showed application prospect in cartilage regeneration medicine by stimulating proliferation, migration, and chondrogenic differentiation of cartilage stem/progenitor cells.

The self-deployment of nodes with non-uniform coverage in underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) is challenging because it is difficult to access the three-dimensional underwater environment. The problem is further complicated if network connectivity needs to be considered. In order to solve the optimization problem of sensor network node deployment, we propose a maximum coverage and connectivity self-deployment algorithm that is based on ant colony optimization (MCC-ACO). We carry out the greedy strategy, improve the path selection probability and pheromone update system, and propose a self-deployment algorithm based on the foundation of standard ant colony optimization algorithms, so as to achieve energy-saving optimization coverage of target events. The main characteristic of the MCC-ACO algorithm is that it fully considers the effects of the changes in the event quantities and the random distribution of the nodes on the deployment effect of the nodes, ensures that every deployed node can be connected to the sink, and achieves the matching of node distribution density and event distribution. Therefore, the MCC-ACO algorithm has great practical value. A large number of comparative simulation experiments show that the algorithm can effectively realize the self-deployment problem of underwater sensor nodes. In addition, the paper also gives the impact of changes in the number of events in the network on the deployment effect.

Intracellular accumulation of protein-bound uremic toxins in the setting of cardiorenal syndrome leads to adverse effects on cardiorenal cellular functions, where cardiac hypertrophy and cardiorenal fibrosis are the hallmarks. In this study, we sought to determine if Apoptosis Signal-Regulated Kinase 1 (ASK1), an upstream regulator of cellular stress response, mediates cardiac hypertrophy and cardiorenal fibrosis induced by indoxyl sulfate (IS) and p-cresol sulfate (PCS) in vitro, and whether ASK1 inhibition is beneficial to ameliorate these cellular effects. PCS augmented cardiac myocyte hypertrophy and fibroblast collagen synthesis (as determined by 3H-leucine and 3H-proline incorporation, respectively), similar to our previous finding with IS. IS and PCS also increased collagen synthesis of proximal tubular cells and renal mesangial cells. Pro-hypertrophic (α-skeletal muscle actin and β-MHC) and pro-fibrotic genes (TGF-β1 and ctgf) were induced by both IS and PCS. Western blot analyses revealed the activation of ASK1 and downstream mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) (p38MAPK and ERK1/2) as well as nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) by IS and PCS. ASK1, OAT1/3, ERK1/2 and p38MAPK inhibitors suppressed all these effects. In summary, IS and PCS exhibit pro-hypertrophic and pro-fibrotic properties, at least in part, via the activation of ASK1 and its downstream pathways. ASK1 inhibitor is an effective therapeutic agent to alleviate protein-bound uremic toxin-induced cardiac hypertrophy and cardiorenal fibrosis in vitro, and may be translated further for cardiorenal syndrome therapy.

To identify the shock generated sources of shear type explosive bolt, five kinds of explosive bolts with different states, including high preload, low preload, no preload, no piston shear, and only propellant combustion, were designed. The decoupling of four kinds of shock sources, including the collision of propellant combustion, piston shear weak surface, end of piston stroke, and preload release, was realized. Their acceleration responses at 15 cm from the shock source center on 60 cm × 60 cm × 1 cm equivalent aluminum plate were measured by using the piezoresistive accelerometer. On this account, the relative contribution values along with frequency and the mean relative values without regard to frequency of various sources were calculated in high and low preload. Results show that the characteristics of different shock sources are different, and the shock induced by propellant combustion is mainly caused by high frequency, while piston shear and piston impact are concentrated in medium and low frequency. In the high preload condition, the preload release is major contributor to the overall shock response output, accounting for approximately 57.51%, while the contributions of the three shock sources of propellant combustion, piston shear, and piston impact are equivalent, but they are significant contributors in the low preload condition. This study provides design reference to reduce the pyrotechnic shock of shear type explosive bolt.

PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the intraoperative application of antimetabolites compared with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents with or without antimetabolites in trabeculectomy (Trab) for glaucoma. METHODS: Relevant studies were selected through extensive search using PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases in August 2013. The primary efficacy estimate was measured using weighted mean difference of the percentage of intraocular pressure reduction (IOPR%) from baseline to end-point, and the secondary efficacy estimates were odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for complete success rate and qualified success rate. ORs were also used to measure the tolerability estimate for adverse events. Meta-analyses of fixed or random effects models were conducted using RevMan software 5.2 to pool the results of the studies included. Heterogeneity was assessed using Chi(2) test and the I(2) measure. RESULTS: Nine studies enrolling a total of 349 patients were included. The weighted mean difference of IOPR% from baseline was 7.23 (95% CI: 2.57-11.89) for antimetabolites vs. anti-VEGF agents and 3.96 (95% CI: -4.18-12.10) for antimetabolites vs. anti-VEGF agents plus antimetabolites. The pooled ORs comparing antimetabolites with anti-VEGF agents were 2.37 (95% CI: 0.78, 7.21) for the complete success rate and 1.93 (95% CI: 0.52, 7.16) for qualified success rate. The pooled ORs comparing antimetabolites with anti-VEGF agents plus antimetabolites were 1.43 (95% CI: 0.48, 4.29) for the complete success rate and 2.11 (95% CI: 0.12, 37.72) for qualified success rate. The rates of adverse events did not significantly differ between antimetabolites and anti-VEGF agents, with pooled ORs of 0.86 (0.28-2.69) for bleb leakage, 3.01 (0.45-20.10) for choroidal effusion, 0.96 (0.23-3.98) for flat anterior chamber, and 0.90 (0.12-6.60) for hypotony. Further, the rates of adverse events were similar between antimetabolites and anti-VEGF agents plus antimetabolites, with pooled ORs of 0.40 (0.08-2.00) and 8.00 (0.93-68.59) for bleb leakage and hypotony, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In comparison with anti-VEGF agents, antimetabolites were more effective in lowering IOP in Trab, while the intraoperative application of these two types of agents did not indicate statistically significant differences in the complete success rate, qualified success rate, or incidence of adverse events.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is one of the common causes of acute renal insufficiency after contrast procedures. Whether intravenous N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is beneficial for the prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy is uncertain. In this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, we aimed to assess the efficacy of intravenous NAC for preventing CIN after administration of intravenous contrast media. STUDY DESIGN: Relevant studies published up to September 2012 that investigated the efficacy of intravenous N-acetylcysteine for preventing CIN were collected from MEDLINE, OVID, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the conference proceedings from major cardiology and nephrology meetings. The primary outcome was CIN. Secondary outcomes included renal failure requiring dialysis, mortality, and length of hospitalization. Data were combined using random-effects models with the performance of standard tests to assess for heterogeneity and publication bias. Meta-regression analyses were also performed. RESULTS: Ten trials involving 1916 patients met our inclusion criteria. Trials varied in patient demographic characteristics, inclusion criteria, dosing regimens, and trial quality. The summary risk ratio for contrast-induced nephropathy was 0.68 (95% CI, 0.46 to 1.02), a nonsignificant trend towards benefit in patients treated with intravenous NAC. There was evidence of significant heterogeneity in NAC effect across studies (Q = 17.42, P = 0.04; I(2) = 48%). Meta-regression revealed no significant relation between the relative risk of CIN and identified differences in participant or study characteristics. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis showed that research on intravenous N-acetylcysteine and the incidence of CIN is too inconsistent at present to warrant a conclusion on efficacy. A large, well designed trial that incorporates the evaluation of clinically relevant outcomes in participants with different underlying risks of CIN is required to more adequately assess the role for intravenous NAC in CIN prevention.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disease mainly caused by atherosclerosis. The aims of this study were to investigate the role of interleukin-27 (IL-27) in patients with CAD and the severity of coronary artery lesions, which was evaluated by Gensini score and to investigate the biosynthesis of IL-27 and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) in vitro using monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DCs). To this aim, plasma levels of IL-27, ox-LDL, and Gensini score were analyzed in patients with CAD (n=136) and normal subjects (controls, n=29). IL-27 concentration of the supernatant and the mRNA expression levels of p28 and ebi3, subunits of IL-27, from cultured immature DCs incubated with different concentrations of ox-LDL for 24 h were also analyzed. Lung radiotherapy is greatly benefitted when the tumor motion caused by breathing can be modeled. The aim of this paper is to present the importance of using anisotropic and subject-specific tissue elasticity for simulating the airflow inside the lungs. A computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) based approach is presented to simulate airflow inside a subject-specific deformable lung for modeling lung tumor motion and the motion of the surrounding tissues during radiotherapy. A flow-structure interaction technique is employed that simultaneously models airflow and lung deformation. The lung is modeled as a poroelastic medium with subject-specific anisotropic poroelastic properties on a geometry, which was reconstructed from four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) scan datasets of humans with lung cancer. The results include the 3D anisotropic lung deformation for known airflow pattern inside the lungs. The effects of anisotropy are also presented on both the spatiotemporal volumetric lung displacement and the regional lung hysteresis.

We present a case of lichen sclerosus (LS) involving face and review of the relevant literature since 1970. This article highlights the rarely reported manifestation of LS. Early diagnosis with dermoscopy or confocal microscopy and early treatment might help cure it, and it may have less malignant potential.
