Ultra-high strength steels with excellent strength, ductility and toughness have become one of indispensable high-performance structural materials. The development of ultra-high strength steels with higher performance has been widely concerned to break the strength-ductility trade-off. This study proposes a material inverse design strategy that combines material genetic design with thermodynamic calculation to search for new alloys with desirable microstructure and optimal strengthening contributions. Based on the advancement of the ‘Pareto Front’, a new steel with superior properties was successfully screened from 390,625 candidate individuals, which was verified by experiments. The experimental results show that a new steel Fe-0.25C-14.8Ni-17.0Co-2.54Mo-1.56Cr-0.53Al-1.06Cu-0.38V (wt. %) has been successfully developed. After quenching-cryogenic-aging process, the new steel achieved a superior combination of strength, ductility and toughness, with a yield strength of 2.2 GPa, an elongation-to-failure of 10% and a V-notch impact energy of 15 J. Multi-scale microstructure characterization indicates that such superior property synergy arises from the unique microstructure: lath martensite matrix with high-density dislocations and interstitial solid soluble carbon atoms, embedded fine M2C, NiAl and Cu-rich nanoprecipitates. We present an in-depth discussion on the origins of superior strength/ductility/toughness combinations of the new steel to validate the design strategy and provide an accessible pathway exploiting high-performance ultra-high strength steels.

In this study, we investigate the burning behavior of titanium during the electroslag remelting (ESR) process and its impact on the titanium content at the endpoint using machine learning. Initially, a comprehensive database was established by collecting data from literature and experiments, encompassing slag system composition, smelting temperature, and material composition content. Subsequently, six machine learning algorithms, including random forest and Bayesian regression, were employed to model the burning loss behavior of titanium. The random forest model, which exhibited optimal mean square error (MSE) performance, was utilized to generate partial dependence plots. These plots, in conjunction with experimental observations and existing studies, facilitated the analysis of key factors influencing titanium burn loss. Furthermore, the same six machine learning models were applied to predict the endpoint titanium content. The Bayesian regression model demonstrated superior performance in terms of R2 and MSE, leading to the derivation of an empirical formula for predicting endpoint titanium content. This empirical formula was subsequently validated, refined, and optimized using a thermodynamic model based on the theory of molecular ion coexistence. The final prediction formula achieved an error margin of 0.123%.

Aiming at the special ultra-high purity (UHP) requirements of AISI 316L stainless steel used in semiconductor equipment, a strategy of vacuum C deoxidization pretreatment plus Mg–Ca composite treatment was proposed in this work. The effects of this strategy on cleanness and inclusion modification were systematically investigated by experimental observations and thermodynamic calculations. The results demonstrated that this strategy significantly reduced the O and S contents to 0.0005 wt% and 0.0007 wt%, respectively. The main inclusions after vacuum C deoxidization were large-sized Al2O3·SiO2 and MnS. After Mg treatment, the oxide inclusions were gradually modified into MgO·Al2O3 and MgO, while the sulfide inclusion was still MnS. After additional Ca treatment, the inclusions were further modified into finer CaO, MgO, CaO·MgO, and CaS. Moreover, this strategy remarkably decreased the number and size of the inclusions. The best level was that all inclusions were smaller than 2 μm, and the proportion of inclusions smaller than 1 μm was as high as 75.47%. Meanwhile, the evolution mechanism of inclusions during different treatments was clarified in this work. Finally, the optimum process for preparing UHP AISI 316L stainless steel was proposed as vacuum C deoxidation plus 0.002 wt% Mg and 0.0016 wt% Ca composite treatment.

The effect of Ce on the corrosion behavior of Fe–36Ni Invar alloy was investigated in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The proper addition of Ce enhanced the corrosion resistance. The second-phase particles were gradually transformed in type, size, and number following the addition of Ce, which alleviated the localized corrosion behavior. The appropriate Ce content increased the fraction of low coincident site lattice boundaries. Furthermore, the enhancement of protectiveness and compactness of the passive film was achieved. However, overadded Ce led to the degradation of corrosion resistance. 0.0170 wt% Ce was advised for the sake of the enhancement of corrosion resistance.

Precipitates always have a complex effect on the hot work hardening and recrystallization softening of materials. In this work, the dual effect of V-microalloying on hot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of high nitrogen martensitic stainless steel (HNMSS) was investigated by hot compression experiments, modeling study and microstructure characterization. The results showed that V-microalloying enhanced the flow stresses and activation energy of 0.2V steel due to the fine grain strengthening effect and the blocking effect of dynamic precipitation on dislocation movement and grain boundary migration. On the other hand, the recrystallization model and deformed microstructure indicated the more intense dynamic recrystallization (DRX) softening effect in 0.2V steel, inducing the faster decrease of flow stress after the peak stress. V-microalloying promoted the dynamic precipitation of HNMSS during hot deformation, which reduced the size and increased the number of precipitates in 0.2V steel. The fine precipitates hindered dislocation movement, promoted dislocation accumulation and entanglement, formed a particle deformation zone (PDZ) with high dislocation density and large orientation gradient, and then induced the occurrence of particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN). In addition, the dislocation cells evolved from dislocation entanglement were also favorable nucleation sites for DRX.

In order to solve the problem of forming liquid precipitated NbC when Nb is added excessively in high carbon steel. This study proposed to introduce Ce to form Ce-containing inclusions to inhibit the growth of large liquid precipitated NbC. The results show that in the high strength valve spring steel with 0.63 % carbon mass fraction, the large liquid precipitated NbC will be formed only if the mass fraction of Nb exceeds 0.0192 %. When the mass fraction of Ce in steel is higher than 0.0364 %. In addition to the formation of high melting point Ce2O3, Ce2C3 carbide will be precipitated at the end of solidification. And the amount of Ce2C3 precipitation will increase with the increase of Ce mass fraction in steel. Ce2O3 and Ce2C3 have low two-dimensional lattice mismatch degree with NbC. both of them can be nucleation sites of NbC, which lead to multi-point precipitation and avoid aggregation and growth of NbC. However, the content of Ce should not be too high, which will be dominated by the precipitation of Ce, and the best mass fraction of Ce and Nb is between 0.02 % and 0.05 %.

Existing thermodynamic descriptions of the whole Cr–Fe–P system are insufficiently accurate for understanding the thermodynamic behavior of the Cr–Fe–P materials during the manufacturing process. To construct a more precise and consistent thermodynamic database of the Cr–Fe–P system, thermodynamic modeling of the Cr–P and Cr–Fe–P systems was conducted using the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) approach based on critical evaluation of the experimental data. The modified quasichemical model and compound energy formalism were employed to describe the liquid and solid solutions, respectively. The Gibbs energies of stoichiometric compounds Cr3P(s), Cr2P(s), CrP(s), and CrP2(s) were carefully determined based on reliable experimental data. The ternary (Cr,Fe)3P, (Cr,Fe)2P, and (Cr,Fe)P phosphides were modeled as solid solutions considering mutual substitution between Cr and Fe atoms. In addition, the phase equilibria of BCC_A2 and FCC_A1 solutions and the liquid phase of the ternary Cr–Fe–P system were also optimized for more accurate descriptions of existing phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties data. As an application of the present database, the experimentally unexplored thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams of the Cr–Fe–P system are predicted.

Abstract Unavoidable nonmetallic inclusions generated in the steelmaking process are fatal defects that often cause serious corrosion failure of steel, leading to catastrophic accidents and huge economic losses. Over the past decades, extensive efforts have been made to address this difficult issue, but none of them have succeeded. Here, we propose a strategy of wrapping deleterious inclusions with corrosion-resistant niobium armour (Z phase). After systematic theoretical screening, we introduce minor Nb into duplex stainless steels (DSSs) to form inclusion@Z core-shell structures, thus isolating the inclusions from corrosive environments. Additionally, both the Z phase and its surrounding matrix possess excellent corrosion resistance. Thus, this strategy effectively prevents corrosion caused by inclusions, thereby doubly improving the corrosion resistance of DSSs. Our strategy overcomes the long-standing problem of “corrosion failure caused by inclusions”, and it is verified as a universal technique in a series of DSSs and industrial production.

The effect of cobalt on the precipitation hardening behavior of the maraging stainless steels was studied. The hardness test indicated that cobalt addition could advance peak aging time and generate a higher peak hardness. The statistical results of nano-size precipitates distribution demonstrated that cobalt increased the density of precipitates, thus resulting in a stronger precipitation hardening contribution. Based on the first-principles calculations and atom probe tomography (APT) results, a possible mechanism has been proposed to reveal the underlying mechanism: cobalt promotes the nucleation of precipitates by decreasing the diffusion activation energy of Ni and Ti.

The addition of small amount of nickel to hot-working die steel has been found to be beneficial for hardenability and toughness. In this paper, the addition of nickel to Cr–Mo–V hot-working die steel was studied to improve hardenability, and the inherent mechanism of enhancing toughness was further explored. The research results indicate that nickel as a non-carbide-forming element does not alter the type and total amount of carbide precipitation at equilibrium, but it can dissolve into the matrix and form substitutional lattice distortions with Fe atoms, promoting the dispersion of secondary carbides during the tempering process. This mechanism can reduce intergranular precipitation and inhibit grain boundary embrittlement, thereby improving toughness. However, it can also accelerate the precipitation, aggregation, and growth of secondary carbides during prolonged tempering, which deteriorates the high-temperature anti-softening properties of die steels. The role of Ni has been revealed through thermodynamic and kinetic calculations. The results show that Ni significantly enhances the diffusion coefficient of Cr atoms in the face centered cubic (fcc) Fe matrix during tempering and also improves the phase transition driving force of various precipitates. This work provides new insights into the mechanism of Ni in hot-working die steels, and can provide guidance for designing novel hot-working die steel.

In this study, a high nitrogen martensitic stainless bearing steel with ultra-high strength and excellent toughness combination treated by quenching-cryogenic cooling-partitioning-tempering (Q-C-P-T) process was obtained. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, uniform elongation and the impact energy of the sample after partitioning at 200 °C for 1 h followed by tempering at 400 °C for 1 h are up to 2034 MPa, 2217 MPa, 5.83% and 58.73 J respectively. The microstructure characterization shows that the interstitial atoms of C and N in martensite diffuse into adjacent austenite during the partitioning process, resulting in the high stability of austenite. Strain-induced martensitic transformation was suppressed in maximum, effectively avoiding the formation of hard martensite enriched in C/N and dimensional instability caused by volume expansion of martensitic transformation, which is crucial for bearing steels. And nano-scale precipitates in the martensite matrix effectively compensate for the strength loss of the martensite caused by lower solid solution of carbon and nitrogen, thus obtaining excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. This work paves a new way for the development of advanced bearing steels.

The banded aggregation of primary carbides in GH3128 alloy severely affects the thermo-plasticity and creep life of the alloy. Therefore, the effects of Mg treatment and cooling rate on primary carbides in the alloy were investigated in a resistance furnace. To differentiate the cooling rate, after alloying, the molten alloy per heat was air-cooled and furnace-cooled, respectively. The results indicate that neither Mg treatment nor increasing cooling rate can change the composition and type of primary carbides. However, as the Mg content increases from 0 to 0.0130%, the primary carbides are gradually dispersed and reduced in size and increased in number due to the refinement of dendrite structures by Mg treatment. Meanwhile, the irregular skeleton-like primary carbides are interrupted into relatively regular blocks and short bars. Compared with the furnace-cooled samples, the primary carbides in the air-cooled samples are finer in size because the refinement of dendrite structures inhibits the remote diffusion of carbide-forming elements. However, the rapid nucleation of primary carbides in the air-cooled samples results in an increase in their number. Consequently, compared with the furnace-cooled sample without Mg addition, the size of primary carbides in the air-cooled sample with 0.0130%Mg addition is reduced by about 76%, while the number of primary carbides is increased by 6.3 times.

The influence mechanisms of Ce addition on the precipitation behaviour of σ phase and nitrides were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that the addition of Ce significantly promoted the nucleation and slightly inhibited the growth of intergranular and intragranular σ phases. Meanwhile, Ce addition also accelerated the precipitations of π phase and Cr2N. Ce promoted the nucleation of intergranular σ phase mainly through: (i) leading to a linear increase in the driving force for σ phase and Cr activity; (ii) resulting in apparent grain refinement and providing more favorable nucleation sites. Besides increasing driving force and Cr activity, Ce addition also promoted the nucleation of intragranular σ phase by: (i) leading to lattice distortion, which not only caused local element concentration, but also reduced σ/γ interface energy, jointly increasing nucleation sites; (ii) providing other nucleation sites (Ce-bearing inclusions) for σ phase; (iii) enhancing Cr and Mo diffusion coefficients, which accelerated the supply of elements required for nucleation. Furthermore, Ce addition enhanced the driving force for Cr2N, Cr activity as well as Cr and N diffusions, and it also promoted the formation of more favorable nitride nucleation sites around σ phases. These combined actions accelerated the precipitations of π phase and Cr2N.

The influence of boron (B) and cerium (Ce) grain boundary (GB) co-segregation on the precipitates formation of S31254 during 950–1050 °C was studied through a new heat treatment process. The results show that B and Ce segregate at GBs by air cooling and diffusion at 300 °C. The segregation of B and Ce at GBs inhibits formation of σ phases. B can dissolve in precipitates, which leads to the serrated GBs. Ce can't dissolve in precipitates, which makes the distribution of the precipitates more discontinuous. There is still nano-scale precipitates with the addition of B and Ce after aging for 180 min at 1050 °C. B and Ce at GBs promote mechanical properties of S31254.

Ultra-high strength steels are the crucial irreplaceable materials in the fields of aerospace, national defense and military industries. Unfortunately, it is challenging to achieve the requirements of vital components because of the strength-toughness trade-off of ultra-high strength steels. In this review, three types of conventional ultra-high strength martensitic steels are systematically summarized. These are: (i) low alloy ultra-high strength steels; (ii) ultra-high strength maraging steels; and (iii) Co–Ni secondary hardening steels. The main influencing factors of mechanical properties of ultra-high strength steels and the exploration on strengthening/toughening are discussed. In particular, the design concept based on the synergistic precipitation of low lattice misfit nano-particles and the formation of martensite matrix with high-density dislocations is a promising approach to develop novel ultra-high strength steels. Finally, some suggestions on the traditional design methods and future development of ultra-high strength steels are put forward and an outlook on future work is offered. This provides guidance for the development of novel ultra-high strength steels with excellent comprehensive performance.

The influence of a combined process, involving air cooling and heat treatment at 300 ℃, on precipitation behavior and corrosion resistance of a S31254-Ce steel was explored through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and electrochemical analysis. After air cooling and heat treatment at 300 ℃, the S31254-Ce steel was conducive to the enrichment of Ce along the grain boundary and the content of Σ3 twins in aged samples increased. The composite heat treatment process is beneficial to inhibit the precipitation of precipitates in the aging process and improve the corrosion resistance of S31254-Ce steel.

In this paper, the as-cast microstructure, microsegregation, precipitates and suitable homogenization process of a novel Ni-based wrought superalloy prepared by vacuum induction melting (VIM) + vacuum arc remelting (VAR) were investigated by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), high temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM) and thermal simulation compression. The results show that severe element segregation exists in the ingot. Nb, Ti and Al are mainly segregated in the interdendritic region, while W is mainly segregated in the dendrite arm. The precipitates in the alloy mainly include non-uniform γ′ strengthening phase, coarse (γ + γ′) eutectic phase and MC carbide, among which, the redissolution temperature range of γ′ phase is 1060–1220 °C; the (γ + γ′) eutectic phase can be redissolved obviously above 1180 °C but melted into liquid at 1250 °C; the redissolution temperature range of MC carbide is 1349–1358 °C, exceeding the solidus temperature of the alloy. After homogenization at 1220 °C/10 h, all the γ′ phase and most of the (γ + γ′) eutectic phase can be redissolved, and the element segregation can be significantly alleviated, moreover, the hot deformation resistance of the alloy is lower and the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) degree is higher, indicating that 1220 °C/10 h is an ideal single-stage homogenization process.

The effects of V–Nb microalloying on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ultra-high-strength spring steel at various austenitizing and tempering times were investigated. To achieve this, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron backscatter diffraction, and tensile tests were performed. The equations for austenite grain coarsening at 900 °C and (V,Nb)C carbide growth at 400 °C were obtained. The results indicated that the tensile properties of the investigated steel significantly improved after V–Nb microalloying with the same quenching-tempering treatment. With increasing austenitization or tempering time, the tensile properties of the experimental steels dramatically declined owing to the coarsening of the grain size or of the martensite lath width and carbide size. Because V–Nb microalloying increased the densities of the grain boundaries and carbides, the full width at half maximum 211α, microstrain, and dislocation density decreased slowly with prolonged tempering time. The strength increment among the investigated steels mainly resulted from the grain refinement strengthening, dislocation strengthening, and most importantly, precipitation strengthening of (V,Nb)C carbide.

The Cr5/42CrMo and 45#/45# composite rolls had been produced by the electroslag remelting cladding (ESRC) method. The interface bonding mechanism was revealed according to grain and dendrite growth. The dendrites of cladding started an epitaxial growth on the partially melted grains and the grains boundaries of cladding grew following the orientation of the partially melted grains of the roll core, ensuring reliable metallurgical bonding between the cladding and the roll core. The heat treatment included the normalizing, annealing, quenching, and tempering process. During the annealing process, the ferrite zone formed on the roll core side because the C atoms diffused from the roll core of low C content to the cladding of high C content for the activity difference. During the quenching process, C atoms diffused from the cladding to the roll core, and the ferrite zone disappeared which ensured the continuous microhardness. The gradient of elements contents on both sides of the interface led to the distinctive difference in microstructure and properties. After the heat treatment, from the cladding to the roll core, the microstructures changed from martensite + carbides to pearlite + ferrite. Accordingly, the values of the Rockwell hardness (HRC) 53.6 and 25.7, the tensile strength (MPa) 1657 and 879, and the impact toughness (J/cm2) 5 to 54 were achieved in the cladding and roll core, respectively. The composite rolls had the cladding of high hardness and roll core of superior impact toughness that could satisfy the requirement for backup rolls of hot strip mills.

Abstract Background The mechanism of long non-coding RNA MIR137HG in human gastric cancer (GC) is currently unknown. In the present study, we aimed to explore the function and mechanism of MIR137HG in gastric cancer. Methods The expression of lncRNA-MIR137HG in 69 gastric cancer samples and their paired surgical margin (SM) tissue samples were tested by QRT-PCR. UCSC was used to find the gene location relationship among MIR137HG and its embedded miRNAs. TargetScan was used to predict the targets of miR-2682-3p. Starbase was used to predict the candidate proteins that interacted with MIR137HG. Western blot, co-focus, and RIP assay were used to verify the direct interaction between MIR137HG and FUS (fused in sarcoma/translocated in liposarcoma, FUS/TLS), while dual-luciferase reporter assay was used to confirm the interaction between miR-2682-3p and FUS. Cell migration assays, colony formation, and xenografts assay were used to investigate the function of MIR137HG and miR-2682-3p to tumor growth and metastasis. Western blot assay was used to explore the downstream candidate protein of FUS. Results Data showed that MIR137HG expressed significantly higher in GC than in SM. MIR137HG promoted colony formation and migration in vitro and promoted tumor formation and metastasis in vivo. MIR137HG is distributed in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. It was co-located with FUS and could directly interact with FUS, which might interact with other proteins, such as MET(MET-proto-oncogene, receptor tyrosine kinase), RHOC(ras homolog family member), and CTNNB1(catenin beta1). These proteins may involve different signaling pathways to regulate gastric cancer progression. By contrast, the embedded miR-2682-3p could antagonize the series functions of its host lncRNA-MIR137HG by targeting FUS. Conclusions lncRNA-MIR137HG promoted growth and metastasis in gastric cancer by interacting with FUS, while miR-2682-3p could inhibit the function of MIR137HG via the same target FUS.

Rolling deformation is the fundamental process path in steel production, which not only changes the shape and size of the billet, but also improves the internal structure and mechanical properties. In the deformation process of steel matrix, the inclusion also evolves. In this paper, the research on inclusion evolution in solid steel rolling deformation process is reviewed, and the corresponding control strategies are pointed out from the perspective of inclusion deformation mechanism. The control methods for MnS focuses on reducing the difference in the hardness between MnS and steel matrix and on selecting the suitable rolling deformation process. The control method for silicate inclusions primarily focuses on altering the composition. The control direction of well-modified calcium aluminate inclusions involves removing the large size particles completely. Moreover, the strategy for inclusions with high hardness is to control their size. Finally, avenues for future research on inclusion deformation are proposed.

Nowadays, Invar alloy combining low thermal expansion behavior with improved mechanical properties is highly required. This study investigated the influence of Zr-rich intermetallic compounds (IMCs) on microstructure, thermal expansion behavior, and mechanical properties in Fe-36Ni Invar alloy. Zr-rich IMCs, namely Ni7Zr2 and Ni2Zr were introduced into Fe-36Ni Invar alloy by the addition of 0.22 wt% Zr. The microstructure of Zr-containing alloy was remarkably refined and accompanied by high dislocation density, which was associated with the resistance of recrystallization by the introduction of Zr-rich IMCs. The Invar alloy displayed a sufficiently low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in the temperature interval of 20 °C ∼ 100 °C and 20 °C ∼ 200 °C after Zr treatment, with a CTE constant of 0.66 × 10-6 /°C and 2.07 × 10-6 /°C, respectively. The existence of residual stress and refinement of grain were responsible for an obvious decrease in CTE. Meanwhile, the yield strength increased from 256 MPa to 401 MPa after Zr treatment. The strengthening contribution mainly arose from dislocation strengthening and grain refinement strengthening.

In this study, the effect of cryogenic treatment on the microstructure, especially the retained austenite (RA) evolution behavior, and mechanical properties of 55Cr17Mo1VN plastic die steel was investigated. The quenching microstructure consisted of martensite, RA, and undissolved carbides. After the cryogenic treatment, the RA volume fraction decreased from 44.7 to 35.4%, while the hardness increased from 39.0 to 54.6 HRC because of the increase in the dislocation density. Besides, the “new martensite” phase broke the blocky RA phase during the cryogenic treatment, and the two phases keep a strict K–S or N–W orientation relationship, which improved the stability of the steel. Interestingly, in the cryogenically treated sample, the RA decomposed completely. On the other hand, the untreated sample retained 20.7% of its RA phase after the tempering process. The cryogenic treatment decreased the thermal stability of the RA phase during the tempering process, which can be attributed to the release of the hydrostatic pressure and the generation of a large number of precipitates from the RA phase. As a result of precipitation strengthening, fine grain strengthening, and dislocation strengthening, the cryogenically treated sample showed excellent tensile strength (∼2241 MPa) and high hardness (∼56.2 HRC).

Electromagnetic induction controlled automated steel teeming (EICAST) is a ladle-sand-free technology applied to the steel teeming process for clean steel practice. The temperature of the induction coil in the EICAST system greatly influence its service life. In this paper, a numerical model was developed to predict the temperature evolution of the induction coil without or with a nano thermal insulation felt (WDS) during the whole thermal cycle of ladle. Industrial experiment was conducted for the model validation. The results indicate that WDS reduces the coil temperature at the ladle baking and secondary refining stages, however it causes a rapid jump in the coil temperature from 309°C to 707°C during the induction heating process. Because the coil temperature is high enough compared to its ambient temperature after the induction heating stage, the temperature of the induction coil using WDS heat insulation material drops to 461°C constantly at the steel teeming stage. The measured temperatures of the nozzle brick and coil in the industrial experiment correspond well with the calculated ones by numerical simulation. The developed model could be used to predict the coil temperature evolution and improve coil cooling strategy at each stage of the whole thermal cycle process of ladle for the industrial application.

Na2O is an alkaline oxide, which can significantly improve the dephosphorization ability of converter slag. The effect of Na2O on the dephosphorization of converter slag was analyzed with a high-temperature dephosphorization experiment in a MoSi2 resistance furnace. We found that the dephosphorization rate increased with the increase of (Na2O) in the dephosphorization slag. The elements of Ca, Si, O, and P in the dephosphorization slag are distributed in the same area, mainly in the form of phosphate minerals, such as Ca2SiO4·0.05Ca3(PO4)2 and 6Ca2SiO4·Ca3(PO4)2. After adding Na2O, part of the Na will replace the Ca in the phosphorus-containing phase to form Ca2SiO4·Ca2Na2(PO4)2. The industrial test showed that the average dephosphorization rate in the early stage of the test heats with the CaO-MgO-FeO-SiO2-0.5%Na2O slag system could reach 62.39%, which was 19.62% higher than that of the conventional heats. The average basicity of the final slag was 0.19% lower than that of the conventional heats, while w(P2O5) increased by 0.36%, and T.Fe decreased by 0.69%. The average consumption of the slagging materials was 35.93 kg/t, which was 7.24 kg/t less than that of the conventional heats. Through thermodynamic calculation, we found that with the increase of (Na2O), the phosphorus distribution ratio between slag and steel increased significantly, the area of the liquid phase zone of the slag system increased continuously, and the viscosity decreased continuously.

Y-containing CLAM steels were melted via vacuum induction melting and electroslag remelting. In this study, the evolution, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the alloy inclusions (ESR-1 (0 wt.% Y), ESR-2 (0.016 wt.% Y) and ESR-3 (0.042 wt.% Y)) were investigated. Further, the number of inclusions in ESRed steel was observed to obviously decrease, and the distributions were more uniform. The fine Y–Al–O inclusions (1–2 μm) were the main inclusions in ESR-2. The addition of Y affected the prior austenite grain size (PAGZ), increasing the tensile strength at test temperature. Low ductile–brittle transition temperature (DBTT) was obtained because of the fine PAGZ and dispersive inclusions. For the ESRed CLAM steel with 0.016 wt.% Y, the yield strengths were 621 MPa at 20 °C and 354 MPa at 600 °C in air. Further, the uniform elongation and elongation of the ESR-2 alloy were 5.5% and 20.1% at 20 °C, respectively. The effect of mold flux containing Ce2O3 on the contents of aluminum, silicon, and titanium in Incoloy825 super alloy was investigated based on the slag-steel interfacial chemical reaction experiment between mold flux and alloy. Firstly, the activity model of the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-Na2O-MgO-CaF2-Ce2O3 slag system was established according to the ion and molecule coexistence theory (IMCT), and the calculation results show that with the increase of Ce2O3 content in the mold flux, the activity of Al2O3 decreases significantly and the activity of SiO2 decreases and gradually tends to 0. Secondly, thermodynamic calculations of the slag-steel interfacial chemical reaction revealed that the main chemical reaction in this study system is [Ti] + (SiO2) = [Si] + (TiO2). With the increase of Ce2O3 content in the mold flux, the slag-steel interfacial chemical reaction is weakened and the oxidation of Al and Ti in steel is inhibited. Finally, the results of slag-steel reaction experiment show that the increase rate of Al content increases from 1.03% to 10.31%, the increase rate of Si content decreases from 55.95% to 31.25%, and the oxidation rate of Ti content decreases from 33.27% to 20.00% when Ce2O3 content in the mold flux increases from 0% to 15% and the slag-steel reaction for 40 mins.

In order to reduce the segregation of Cr and Mo and inhibit the precipitates, we added a small amount of B and Ce to traditional S31254 steel. Using an air-cooling and low-temperature diffusion treatment, the purpose was to control B and Ce at the grain boundary. The heat-treatment process could prompt co-segregation of B, precipitate-forming elements, and Ce at the grain boundary at 950 °C. After aging at 950 °C for different amounts of time, the diffusion treatment had an obvious inhibitory effect on the precipitates that caused them to become discontinuous, fine, and serrated. The B-containing serrated precipitates were only rich in Mo, while Cr was homogeneously distributed in the probed volume. A uniform distribution of Cr reduced the Cr-depleted zone in the area adjacent to the phase interface. Ce was observed to be segregated at the grain boundary. This showed that Ce could inhibit the formation of precipitates at the grain boundary. The serrated precipitates had an obvious resistance to intergranular corrosion.

Focusing on the serious volatilization of MoO3 in super austenitic stainless steel with a high Mo content, the influence of B on the formation of oxide film and the distribution of Cr and Mo was investigated at 900 °C and 1000 °C. Without the addition of B, Mo tends to diffuse to the surface, forming porous Cr/Mo-rich oxides, causing the volatilization of Mo. The addition of B can inhibit the diffusion of Mo to the surface, facilitate the diffusion of Cr to the surface and combines with O, providing conditions for the nucleation of Cr2O3. A large amount of Cr2O3 accumulated on the surface to form a dense passive film, which inhibited the diffusion of Mo to the surface, reduced the loss of Mo, and formed Mo/Cr-rich precipitates at grain boundaries that are close to the surface. However, it was difficult to form Mo-rich precipitates at the grain boundaries of a sample without B, which aggravated the volatilization of Mo from grain boundary to surface. Therefore, the addition of B can improve the oxidation resistance of 254SMO and inhibit the volatilization of Mo.

Ultrahigh-strength (UHS) steels have shown great potential in the field of high-end equipment manufacturing in demand of lightweight engineering and performance upgrade. A significant research effort has been directed toward the development of advanced UHS steels with excellent combination of strength and toughness. In the course of development, tailoring precipitates by means of composition design and process optimization is absolutely a critical module. In this mini review, typical UHS steels strengthened by carbides and intermetallics are systematically summarized and discussed. With the increase of strength, the toughness losses of UHS steels strengthened by carbides and intermetallics have been compared in detail. In particular, the in-depth mechanisms leading to various strength/toughness variation trends have been discussed, extracting the bottleneck in developing new-generation UHS steels containing merely one type of precipitate. Meanwhile, prospects on designing advanced UHS steels strengthened by coexisting dispersive precipitates have been proposed to achieve better performance.

The effects of the Al2O3 content and basicity of CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–10 wt.% MgO refining slag on inclusions removal in 55SiCr spring steel were investigated. The viscosity of slag was studied using a viscometer, while the microstructure investigation involved using a water-quenching furnace and a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer. The influence mechanism of the slag adjustment on inclusions was explored through thermodynamic calculations and kinetic analysis. The results indicated that the viscosity of the molten slag increased gradually with the content of Al2O3 increasing due to it increasing the degree of polymerization of the slag network structure, especially the [AlO4]5− and [Si-O-Si] structures. In contrast, the viscosity of molten slag experienced the opposite pattern, with the basicity of molten slag increasing. This was due to the fact that Ca2+ can significantly reduce the degree of polymerization of a slag network structure, especially the percentages of the [SiO4]4−, [AlO4]5− and [Si-O-Si] network structures. Finally, the changes in physical properties and structure of slag significantly affected the removal effect of the inclusions in molten steel. As a result, the number, size distribution, composition distribution and morphology of the inclusions displayed significant changes when the content of Al2O3 increased from 3 wt.% to 12 wt.% and the basicity of the slag gradually increased from 0.5 to 1.2.

S is a common corrosion medium for austenitic stainless steels. The severe intergranular fracture of austenitic stainless steels occurs in sulfur environments. In this paper, the permeation of S at different atomic positions for three symmetric tilt grain boundary types, i.e., Σ5(210), Σ5(310), and Σ9(114) have been computed using first-principles calculations. S has the strongest segregation tendency in the Σ5(210) grain boundary. A high content of S at the grain boundary indicates harm to the grain boundary. Sulfur segregation in the grain boundaries can weaken the strength of the metallic bond. When Mo and Cr are present at the Σ5(210) grain boundary, the sulfur-induced embrittlement is inhibited. With increased S concentration at the grain boundary, the coexistence of Mo and Cr can suppress the intergranular fracture of S on the grain boundary. The reason why high-Mo stainless steel has excellent sulfur-induced intergranular corrosion resistance is explained at the atomic level.

In this paper, the CLAM steel strengthened by micro-scale Y–Zr–O was prepared by vacuum induction melting followed by electroslag remelting (VIM-ESR). Yttrium (Y) and zirconium (Zr) were easy to aggregates into massive yttrium-zirconium-rich inclusions in the steel melted by vacuum induction melting (VIM), which would interrupt the continuity of the matrix and reduce the mechanical properties of steel. Micron-sized Y–Zr–O inclusions would be produced with the removal of original blocky Y–Zr-rich inclusions and the submicron-sized inclusions smaller than 0.2 μm could be retained in the steel. The small grain size and the better refinement and distribution uniformity of Y–Zr–O inclusions after remelting would be responsible for the better yield strength and toughness. For VIM-ESR alloy, the ultimate tensile strength is 749 MPa and the yield strength is 642 MPa at room temperature, meanwhile they are 391 MPa and 367 MPa at 600 °C, respectively. The effects of Y and Ti on the microstructure stability and tensile properties of the reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel have been investigated. The addition of Y and Ti affected the prior austenite grain size due to the pinning of the inclusions. Ti addition of 0.008 wt% to the steel was intended to promote the precipitation of nano-sized carbides with a high resistance to coarsening. 8Ti14Y exhibited a higher yield strength and a lower DBTT than the other alloys due to the fine grain size and additional precipitation hardening by (Ti, Ta)-rich MX. After thermal exposure at 550 °C for 1500 h, yield strength was dropped significantly in exposed 0Ti13Y. On the contrary, a lower reduction of YS was observed in 8Ti14Y. The M23C6 in 0Ti13Y and 8Ti14Y and MX in 25Ti14Y and 39Ti15Y coarsened seriously during ageing, which could be responsible for the reduction of the tensile properties of alloys. Herein, a 2D unified model coupling a plasma arc–molten bath–cavity in a direct current electric arc furnace was developed for a characteristic analysis of the fluid flow and heating rate of the molten bath. The ‘local thermodynamic equilibrium–diffusion approximation’ method was employed for the physical phenomenon at the plasma arc/molten bath interface, and the volume-of-fluid method was used to track the free surface. After ensuring model validation, the formation processes of the cavity and the flow field and heating rate of the molten bath were investigated by utilizing the unified model. The numerical results showed that the formation processes of the cavity contained three stages, namely the expansion, compression, and dynamic equilibrium stages. The arc pressure and plasma shear stress both contributed to the cavity formation, and dominated the expansion of the cavity depth and diameter, respectively. Under plasma arc jet impingement, there were two flow patterns inside the molten bath: (i) a clockwise eddy on the top surface and lateral part of molten bath dominated by plasma shear stress, and (ii) a counter-clockwise eddy in the bottom part of the molten bath dominated by the electromagnetic force. Meanwhile, the main heated region of the molten bath with the plasma arc–molten bath–cavity coupling was in the radial range of 0.2–0.6 m, and a high-temperature region was formed on the top surface of the molten bath caused by plasma shear stress.

To clarify the effect of sulfur on inclusions and mechanical properties of Ce-Mg treated resulfurized SCr420H steel. Laboratory experiments were conducted to prepare steels with sulfur contents as 0.01%, 0.06%, and 0.132%. Inclusion evolution in liquid steel, MnS precipitation during solidification, and tensile test results of steel after quenching and tempering were investigated. The results showed that due to the limitation of mass transfer in molten steel, composite inclusion that Ce-O-S wrapped by Ce-Ca-Mg-Al-Si-O, which was named transition state inclusions, can form quickly after adding Ce-Mg lump to the molten steel. As the homogenization of molten steel, the difference of sulfur content in steel can lead to the transition state inclusions transformed into different inclusions. With the increase of sulfur content, the quantity of MnS increased significantly, and the morphology of MnS transformed from “stick” to “dendritic + fishbone”, and then to “fishbone”. Tensile test results and fracture analysis indicate that the decline of inclusion spacing as the increase of sulfur content leads to a shorter physical path of crack propagation in steel. Therefore, the increase of sulfur content can bring about a decrease in the strength and plasticity of the steel. From the perspective of inclusion control, making the MnS inclusion precipitate more dispersive and increasing the distance between inclusions can be considered as a method for preventing the decline of mechanical properties in steel with high sulfur content.

Steel tire cord and steel saw wire represent typical precision pearlitic steel wire rods of wire products; it is a very important solar energy material with a diameter about 50 μm. This paper mainly discusses the research progress of the wire rod drawing process, and its main contents are as follows: First section—the control of the wire rod surface quality is summarized, including the thickness of the surface decarburization layer, the phase composition and thickness of the surface iron oxide scale, and the removal of surface iron oxide scale. Then, the research progress of the wire rod water bath treatment process during sorbitization is summarized. In addition, the development of brass plating technology for steel wire is summarized, including copper plating technology, coating phase composition, etc. Furthermore, the development of steel wire drawing methods is summarized. Finally, the development of the dies used in steel wire drawings is summarized.

In order to study the effect of BaO or B2O3 on the absorption of Ti inclusions, the effects of mold fluxes with different contents of BaO (0~15%) or B2O3 (0~15%) on the mass transfer coefficients of TiO2 or TiN were studied with the rotating cylinder method. The experimental results show that with the addition of BaO in the mold flux, the mass transfer coefficient of TiO2 increases from 4.58 × 10−4 m/s to 6.08 × 10−4 m/s, that of TiN increases from 3.09 × 10−4 m/s to 4.41 × 10−4 m/s, 2CaO·MgO·2SiO2 is transformed into BaO·2CaO·MgO·2SiO2, and the Ti inclusions combine with CaO to form CaTiO3. With the addition of B2O3 in the mold flux, the mass transfer coefficient of TiO2 increases from 4.58 × 10−4 m/s to 7.46 × 10−4 m/s, that of TiN increases from 3.09 × 10−4 m/s to 5.50 × 10−4 m/s, CaO and B2O3 combine to 2CaO·B2O3, and Ti inclusions exist in the form of TiO2. During the experiment, TiN will be transformed into titanium oxide.

In the present study, the effects of rare earth metal (REM) Ce on the number, size distribution and type of inclusions, as well as the grain size, tensile and impact properties of LDX2101 duplex stainless steel, were investigated using thermodynamic analysis, optical microscope, image software, scanning electron microscope, tensile and impact testing machines. The results indicate that when the Ce content in steel is 0%, the main inclusions are irregular and large size Al2O3 and Al2O3-MnS. When the Ce content in steel is 0.005% or 0.02%, the inclusions are mainly spherical and small size inclusions CeAlO3, Ce2O2S and Ce2O3. With the increase in Ce content, the proportion of small size inclusions gradually increases; the number of inclusions per unit area decreases from 122 to 58 and the average grain size reduces from 16 ± 0.7 μm to 12 ± 0.3 μm. Moreover, the mechanical properties of steels are improved, and the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation are elevated by 4.69%, 2.83% and 4.9%, respectively. The impact fracture mode of steel without Ce is cleavage fracture, however, the fracture mode is transformed into a mixed fracture of cleavage and dimple after adding 0.005% and 0.02% Ce.

A comprehensive mathematical model of electroslag remelting with two series-connected electrodes (TSCE-ESR) was constructed based on sequential coupling method. The influence of droplet effect on electroslag remelting process (ESR) was considered in this model. Compared with one-electrode electroslag remelting (OE-ESR), the multi-physics field, droplet formation and dripping behavior, and molten metal pool structure of TSCE-ESR process were studied. The results show that during the process of TSCE-ESR, the proximity effect of the electrodes suppresses the skin effect, and Joule heat is concentrated in the area between the two electrodes of slag pool, making the temperature distribution of the slag pool more uniform. The heat used to melt the electrode in the process of TSCE-ESR accounts for about 34% of the total Joule heat, which is lower than the OE-ESR (17%). Therefore, it makes a higher melting rate and a smaller droplet size in the process of TSCE-ESR. Compared with OE-ESR, TSCE-ESR process can realize the unification of higher melting rate and shallow flat molten metal pool. Compared with the results without droplet effect, it is found that in the simulation results with droplet effect, the depth and the cylindrical section of molten metal pool increased, and the width of the mushy zone is significantly reduced, which is more consistent with the actual electroslag remelting process.

The formation and dripping behavior of droplets in the process of the electroslag remelting with two series-connected electrodes (TSCE-ESR) has an important influence on the optimization of power supply parameters and the purity of the electroslag ingot. In this article, through numerical simulation based on the VOF (volume of fluid) model, combined with the transparent experimental device for physical simulation, the mechanism of metal droplet formation and the effect of the filling rate on its droplet behavior were studied. The results showed that the proximity effect, instead of the skin effect, is a major factor influencing droplet formation in TSCE-ESR process. The proximity effect makes the region inside the two electrode tip melt first, and the molten steel converges at the electrode tips to form a droplet source. The process of droplet formation and dropping can be divided into three stages: formation of molten layer, droplet stretching and necking, and detachment. In the stage of droplet stretching and necking, the increase in the contact area between the droplet and the slag and the instantaneous increase of the current provide good thermodynamic and dynamic conditions for the removal of non-metallic inclusions. After the droplet drops into the slag pool, it promotes the flow of slag and improves the heat and mass transfer efficiency of the slag/metal interface. The relatively large filling rate can form smaller and dispersed droplets, which improves the refining effect. At the same time, the increase of the filling rate can improve the input power and the electrode remelting rate.

The effects of the Y- and Ti-containing inclusions on the tensile and impact properties of reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) steels were evaluated. Four steels with different Y and Ti contents were produced via vacuum induction melting. The size and quantity of inclusions in the steels were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, and the oxide particle formation mechanism was clarified. These inclusions helped to enhance the pinning effect of the austenite grain boundaries based on the Zener pinning force. The average prior austenite grain sizes, measured via the linear intercept method, were 12.34 (0 wt.% Ti), 9.35 (0.010 wt.% Ti), 10.22 (0.030 wt.% Ti), and 11.83 (0.050 wt.% Ti) μm for the four steels, in order of increasing Ti content, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy was conducted to observe the fine carbides. The strength and impact properties of the steel containing 0.010 wt.% Ti were improved, and the ductile-to-brittle-transition temperature was reduced to −70.5 °C. The tensile strength and impact toughness of the steel with 0.050 wt.% Ti were significantly reduced due to the coarsening of both the inclusions and grain size, as well as the precipitation of large TiN inclusions. The RAFM steel with approximately 0.015 wt.% Y and 0.010 wt.% Ti exhibited an optimized combination of microstructures, tensile properties, and impact properties among the four steels.

This study investigated the microstructural stability and mechanical properties exhibited by China low activation martensitic (CLAM) steels with different yttrium (Y) contents over 3000 h of aging at 550 °C. Scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction analysis, and transmission electron microscopy were employed to investigate the microstructural evolution of the steels. Results indicated that grain boundary migration was slow and the Laves phase precipitation was delayed in Y-containing steels. Grain boundaries at different angles in 0Y and 6Y CLAM steels were significantly affected, and those in 36Y and 71Y alloys exhibited negligible changes during the long-term thermal aging. Moreover, Y contents had appreciable effects on the strength and toughness of the aged steels. The stable microstructure of Y-containing CLAM alloys is responsible for improved strength and impact toughness during aging.

In the present study, the effect of cerium content in the range of 0~0.0676% on oxygen and sulfur content, as well as the quantity, size, distribution, and type of inclusions in C104Cr saw wire steel, were investigated using thermodynamic analysis, metallographic examination, SEM-EDS, and component analysis. The results showed that conducting a vacuum carbon pre-deoxidization process is helpful in preventing the formation of Ce2O3 inclusions in a smelting experiment, and cerium has a beneficial effect in terms of modifying inclusions. When the content of cerium in steel is 0.0136% or 0.0277%, the main inclusions in the steel are Ce2O2S and CeS, and when the content of cerium is 0.0389% or above, the inclusions in the steel are Ce2O2S, CeS, Ce–S–O–P(As), Ce–O–P, and Ce–P(As). The calculation of the segregation model showed that the precipitation of CeP and CeAs in steel takes place at the end of solidification. According to the element mapping distribution diagram of Ce–S–O–P(As) and the layered Ce–O–P inclusions found in steel with high cerium content, two possible mechanisms for the formation of Ce2O3 inclusions distributed in the outer layer of cerium composite inclusions are proposed. The first mechanism suggests that Ce2O3 inclusions are generated from the combination of [Ce] and [O] directly, and the second suggests that Ce2O3 is the product of an oxidization reaction after the formation of CeP.

Inclusion removal and modification of C96V saw wire steel using Na2O- and Rb2O- containing novel low-basicity LF (ladle furnace) Refining Slags have been researched. The results indicated that the addition of Na2O deteriorates inclusion removal; by contrast, the addition of Rb2O seems to significantly enhance inclusion removal. In detail, Rb2O can improve the cleanliness in the as-quenched C96V saw wire steel melts compared to preexisting synthetic LF refining slag compositions: (i) The average inclusion diameter experienced a remarkable decrease after reaction between the liquid steel and the synthetic LF refining slag; (ii) In addition, the number of inclusions also suffered from a dramatic decrease, with the reaction time increasing from 900 to 2700 s (15 to 45 min); (iii) Furthermore, both of the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3 and CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 inclusion system mainly concentrated in the low melting zone when the composition of Rb2O in synthetic refining slag was ≥5.0 wt%. This is mainly because Na2O significantly reduces the viscosity of refining slag, while Rb2O increases it. Then, there are two remarkable influences causing the increase of viscosity of refining slag with the addition of Rb2O: the inclusions can be sufficiently entrained within the slag once absorbed due to the significant increase in the viscosity; and the slag entrapment during refining process weakened dramatically.

Electroslag remelting cladding (ESRC) with a t-shape current carrying mold was adopted to make a compound roll including a working layer and mandrel. A comprehensive coupled transient model was established to reveal the basic phenomena of electromagnetic fields, flow fields, temperature fields, and multiphase flow. Meanwhile, the movement of the mandrel and working layer relative to the slag pool was simulated by dynamic mesh technology to reveal the interface bonding mechanism. The mechanism is as follows: The temperature of the mandrel increases and the mandrel melts slightly when the mandrel passes through the slag pool. The fusion layer is a mixture of molten steel of mandrel and working layer that is the connector between the mandrel and the working layer. Therefore, the interface bonding quality is dependent on a fusion layer that is affected by the voltage/power. The investigation indicates that the fusion layer thickness is between 2 and 4 mm in the condition of 40 V that benefits from obtaining a good interface bonding quality.

In the present study, a new electroslag cladding method by using of the advanced current supplying mold technology was used for manufacturing the high speed steel (HSS)/ductile cast iron (DCI) composite roll. The graphite morphology, matrix microstructure, elements distribution, carbides morphology, and carbides composition have been investigated by means of optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). With increasing distance from the HSS side, a transition of graphite morphology from naught to existence and from small and dispersed to large and nonuniform was obtained at the interface. It was closely related to the fact that graphite in DCI participated in the phase change and the roll core surface and its nearby positions was heated to a high temperature by the liquid slag during the whole electroslag cladding process. Due to the combined effects of melting and elements diffusion, a significant migration of the alloying elements have occurred through the line scan analysis. Based on this, different types of carbides with the morphology and composition were found at the bonding interface. In addition, no obvious slag inclusions, porosity, shrinkage and other defects at the bonding interface were found. Results of the tensile test also illustrated that the bonding interface had a good quality and it could fully meet the requirements of the roll.

High nitrogen martensitic stainless steel 30Cr15Mo1N plates were successfully welded by friction stir welding (FSW) at a tool rotation speed of 300 rpm with a welding speed of 100 mm/min, using W-Re tool. The sound joint with no significant nitrogen loss was successfully produced. Microstructure, mechanical and corrosion properties of an FSW joint were investigated. The results suggest that the grain size of the stir zone (SZ) is larger than the base metal (BM) and is much larger the case in SZ-top. Some carbides and nitrides rich in chromium were found in BM while not observed in SZ. The martensitic phase in SZ could transform to austenite phase during the FSW process and the higher peak temperature, the greater degree of transformation. The hardness of SZ is significantly lower than that of the BM. An abrupt change of hardness defined as hard zone (HZ) was found in the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) on the advancing side (AS), and the HZ is attributed to a combination result of temperature, deformation, and material flow behavior. The corrosion resistance of SZ is superior to that of BM, which can be attributed to less precipitation and lower angle boundaries (LABs). The corrosion resistance of SZ-bottom is slight higher than that of SZ-top because of the finer grained structure.

Removal of non-metallic inclusions to CaF2-based slag is one of the most important functions of electroslag remelting. In this work, the dissolution behavior for alumina-based inclusions in CaF2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slag has been investigated. Results indicate that the diffusion or permeability capacity of slag components into alumina particles is F−, Ca2+, Si4+, Mg2+, from strongest to weakest, for CaF2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slag. Alumina inclusions react with F− in liquid slag at first and then react with CaO to form xCaO-yAl2O3 system. Subsequently, MgO substitutes for CaO to form a MgO-Al2O3 system layer surrounding the other product and reactant, and then enters the liquid slag. CaF2 can improve the dissolution capacity of slag to alumina inclusions. A complex region was formed between alumina-based particles and the slag, with different areas dominated by CaF2, CaO-Al2O3, CaO-SiO2 and MgO-Al2O3. The dissolution process of alumina particles in slag is different from the formation of compound inclusions originated from the Al-O deoxidization reaction.
