The Simons Observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) survey experiment located in the Atacama Desert in Chile at an elevation of 5200 meters, nominally consisting of an array of three 0.42-meter small aperture telescopes (SATs) and one 6-meter large aperture telescope (LAT). SO will make accurate measurements of the CMB temperature and polarization spanning six frequency bands ranging from 27 to 280 GHz, fielding a total of $\sim$68,000 detectors covering angular scales between one arcminute to tens of degrees. In this paper, we focus on the SATs, which are tailored to search for primordial gravitational waves, with the primary science goal of measuring the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio \textit{r} at a target level of $\sigma(r) \approx 0.003$. We discuss the design drivers, scientific impact, and current deployment status of the three SATs, which are scheduled to start taking data in the coming year. The SATs aim to map 10\% of the sky at a 2 $\mu$K-arcmin noise level observing at mid-frequencies (93/145 GHz), with additional ultra-high-frequency (225/280 GHz) and low-frequency (27/39 GHz) targets to yield galactic foreground-subtracted measurements.

Long-time series of neuronal recordings are resulting from the activity of connected neuronal networks. Yet how neuronal properties can be extracted remains empirical. We review here the data analysis based on network models to recover physiological parameters from electrophysiological and calcium recordings in neurons and astrocytes. After, we present the recording techniques and activation events, such as burst and interburst and Up and Down states. We then describe time-serie segmentation methods developed to detect and to segment these events. To interpret the statistics extracted from time series, we present computational models of neuronal populations based on synaptic short-term plasticity and After hyperpolarization. We discuss how these models are calibrated so that they can reproduce the statistics observed in the experimental time series. They serve to extract specific parameters by comparing numerical and experimental statistical moment or entire distributions. Finally, we discus cases where calibrated models are used to predict the selective impact of some parameters on the circuit behavior, properties that would otherwise be difficult to dissect experimentally.

This paper presents a novel approach for simulating plasma instabilities in tokamak plasmas using the piecewise field-aligned finite element method in combination with the particle-in-cell method. Our method traditionally aligns the computational grid but defines the basis functions in piecewise field-aligned coordinates to avoid grid deformation while naturally representing the field-aligned mode structures. This scheme is formulated and implemented numerically. It also applied to the unstructured triangular meshes in principle. We have conducted linear benchmark tests, which agree well with previous results and traditional schemes. The triangular mesh-based gyrokinetic scheme enables comprehensive axis-to-edge studies across the entire plasma volume. Our approach employs triangular finite elements with first-derivative continuity (C1), building on previous work to facilitate gyrokinetic simulations. Additionally, we have adopted the mixed variable/pullback scheme for gyrokinetic electromagnetic particle simulations. The filter-free treatment in the poloidal cross-section with triangular meshes introduces unique features and challenges compared to previous treatments using structured meshes. Our implementation has been validated through benchmarks using ITPA-TAE (Toroidicity-induced Alfv\'en Eigenmode) parameters, showing its capability in moderate to small electron skin depth regimes. The indirect nonlinear interactions between toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmode (TAE) and ion temperature gradient mode (ITG) are investigated using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory and ballooning mode formalism. More specifically, the local nonlinear ITG mode equation is derived adopting the fluid-ion approximation, with the contributions of zonal field structure and phase space zonal structure beat-driven by finite amplitude TAE accounted for on the same footing. The obtained nonlinear ITG mode equation is solved both analytically and numerically, and it is found that, the zonal structure beat-driven by TAE has only weakly destabilizing effects on ITG, contrary to usual speculations and existing numerical results.

The self-consistent nonlinear interaction of drift wave (DW) and zonal flow (ZF) is investigated using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory, with both spontaneous excitation and beat-driven of ZF by DW treated on the same footing. DW solitons are formed in the nonlinear DW-ZF interactions and are confined between radially spaced micro-barriers. The resulting radial structures in the nonlinear DW-ZF interactions exhibit similar pattern to the ExB "staircase" observed in numerical simulations. These micro-barriers are generated by the repulsive response due to spontaneously excited ZF, which, as a general property demonstrated in this work, also generate an attractive nonlinear potential in DW equation. Meanwhile, the nonlinear potential due to beat-driven ZF is always attractive and, as such, always serve as potential well to contribute to soliton formation. For spontaneously excited ZF from initial noise, the simultaneous excitation of solitons and micro-barriers is found to be universal, due to the zero frequency nature of ZF and spatial structure of the Reynolds stress. The present analysis, thus, provides a potential first-principle-based interpretation of the ExB staircase observed in simulations, which may contribute to micro transport barriers formation and enhance plasma confinement., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In some fields, scientific data formats differ across experiments due to specialized hardware and data acquisition systems. Researchers need to develop, document, and maintain experiment-specific analysis software to interact with these data formats. These software are often tightly coupled with a particular data format. This proliferation of custom data formats has been a prominent challenge for small to mid-scale experiments. The widespread adoption of ROOT has largely mitigated this problem for the Large Hadron Collider experiments. However, many smaller experiments continue to use custom data formats to meet specific research needs. Therefore, simplifying the process of accessing a unique data format for analysis holds immense value for scientific communities within HEP. We have added Awkward Arrays as a target language for Kaitai Struct for this purpose. Researchers can describe their custom data format in the Kaitai Struct YAML (KSY) language. The Kaitai Struct Compiler generates C++ code to fill the LayoutBuilder buffers using the KSY format. In a few steps, the Kaitai Struct Awkward Runtime API can convert the generated C++ code into a compiled Python module. Finally, the raw data can be passed to the module to produce Awkward Arrays. This paper introduces the Awkward Target for the Kaitai Struct Compiler and the Kaitai Struct Awkward Runtime API. A workflow is developed based on the ideal MHD model to investigate the linear physics of various Alfv\'en eigenmodes in general axisymmetric toroidal geometry, by solving the coupled shear Alfv\'en wave (SAW) and ion sound wave (ISW) equations in ballooning space. The model equations are solved by the FALCON code in the singular layer, and the corresponding solutions are then taken as the boundary conditions for calculating parallel mode structures in the whole ballooning space. As an application of the code, the frequencies and mode structures of toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmode (TAE) are calculated in the reference equilibria of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) with positive and negative triangularities, respectively. By properly handling the boundary conditions, we demonstrate finite TAE damping due to coupling with the local acoustic continuum, and find that the damping rate is small for typical plasma parameters.

Using the slab plasma as a paradigm model, we have derived analytically equations for the nonlinear generation of zero-frequency zonal flows by electron drift waves including, on the same footing, both the beat-driven and spontaneous excitations. It is found that the beat-driven zonal flow tends to reduce the frequency mismatch between the electron drift waves and, thereby, contributes to a significant O(1) enhancement of the modulational instability drive and lowering its threshold. In this work, gyrokinetic theory of drift waves (DWs) self-regulation via the forced driven zonal flow (ZF) is presented, and finite diamagnetic drift frequency due to plasma nonuniformity is shown to play dominant role in ZF forced generation. The obtained nonlinear DW equation is a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, in which the linear dispersiveness, linear growth, nonuniformity of diamagnetic drift frequency, and cubic nonlinearity induced by feedback of forced-driven ZF to DWs are self-consistently included. The nonlinear DW equation is solved numerically in both uniform and nonuniform plasmas. It is shown that DWenvelope soliton may form due to the balance of linear dispersiveness and nonlinearity, and lead to turbulence spreading to linearly stable region. It is further found that though the threshold on DW amplitude for soliton formation is well within the relevant parameter regimes of realistic tokamak experiments, solitons can not extend beyond the range bounded by the turning points of the wave packet when plasma nonuniformity is self-consistently accounted for.

Gyrokinetic and kinetic-MHD simulations are performed for the fishbone instability in the DIII-D discharge #178631, chosen for validation of first-principles simulations to predict the energetic particle (EP) transport in an ITER prefusion baseline scenario. Fishbone modes are found to generate zonal flows, which dominate the fishbone saturation. The underlying mechanisms of the two-way fishbone-zonal flows nonlinear interplay are discussed in details. Numerical and analytical analyses identify the fishbone-induced EP redistribution as the dominant generation mechanism for zonal flows. The zonal flows modify the nonlinear dynamics of phase space zonal structures, which reduces the amount of EPs able to resonate with the mode, leading to an early fishbone saturation. Simulation results including zonal flows agree quantitatively with DIII-D experimental measurements of the fishbone saturation amplitude and EP transport, supporting this novel saturation mechanism by self-generated zonal flows. Moreover, the wave-particle mode-locking mechanism is shown to determine quantitatively the fishbone frequency down-chirping, as evident in GTC simulation results in agreement with predictions from analytical theory. Finally, the fishbone-induced zonal flows are possibly responsible for the formation of an ion-ITB in the DIII-D discharge. Based on the low EP transport and the large zonal flow shearing rates associated with the fishbone instability in gyrokinetic simulations of the ITER scenario, it is conjectured that high performance scenarios could be designed in ITER burning plasmas through fishbone-induced ITBs.

We study the validity of gyrokinetic theory by examining the destruction of magnetic moment adiabatic invariant in the presence of fluctuations. Contrary to common assertions, it is shown for the first time that the gyrokinetic theory rests not only on the magnetic moment conservation, but also on the fact that the particle dynamics constitutes a boundary layer problem. For low frequency fluctuations, there exists a quantitative, frequency independent threshold below which the adiabaticity is preserved, allowing thereby the general validity of gyrokinetic theory. The adiabaticity threshold in the high frequency regime, however, depends sensitively on frequency, which questions the generalization of gyrokinetic equation to arbitrary frequencies. Further analyses suggest that it is not feasible to construct a reduced kinetic equation based on superadiabaticity.

A novel channel for fuel ions heating in tokamak core plasma is proposed and analyzed using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. The channel is achieved via spontaneous decay of reversed shear Alfv\'en eigenmode (RSAE) into low frequency Alfv\'en modes (LFAM), which then heat fuel ions via collisionless ion Landau damping. The conditions for RSAE spontaneous decay are investigated, and the saturation level and the consequent fuel ion heating rate are also derived. The channel is expected to be crucial for future reactors operating under reversed shear configurations, where fusion alpha particles are generated in the tokamak core where the magnetic shear is typically reversed, and there is a dense RSAE spectrum due to the small alpha particle characteristic dimensionless orbits., Comment: 4 page proceeding for EPS-DPP conference

Nonlinear simulations of Alfv\'en modes (AM) driven by energetic particles (EP) in the presence of turbulence are performed with the gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code ORB5. The AMs carry a heat flux, and consequently they nonlinearly modify the plasma temperature profiles. The isolated effect of this modification on the dynamics of turbulence is studied, by means of electrostatic simulations. We find that turbulence is reduced when the profiles relaxed by the AM are used, with respect to the simulation where the unperturbed profiles are used. This is an example of indirect interaction of EPs and turbulence. First, an analytic magnetic equilibrium with circular concentric flux surfaces is considered as a simplified example for this study. Then, an application to an experimentally relevant case of ASDEX Upgrade is discussed.

Nonlinear wave-wave coupling constitutes an important route for the turbulence spectrum evolution in both space and laboratory plasmas. For example, in a reactor relevant fusion plasma, a rich spectrum of symmetry breaking shear Alfv\'en wave (SAW) instabilities are expected to be excited by energetic fusion alpha particles, and self-consistently determine the anomalous alpha particle transport rate by the saturated electromagnetic perturbations. In this work, we will show that the nonlinear gyrokinetic theory is a necessary and powerful tool in qualitatively and quantitatively investigating the nonlinear wave-wave coupling processes. More specifically, one needs to employ the gyrokinetic approach in order to account for the breaking of the ``pure Alfv\'enic state" in the short wavelength kinetic regime, due to the short wavelength structures associated with nonuniformity intrinsic to magnetically confined plasmas. Using well-known toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmode (TAE) as a paradigm case, three nonlinear wave-wave coupling channels expected to significantly influence the TAE nonlinear dynamics are investigated to demonstrate the strength and necessity of nonlinear gyrokinetic theory in predicting crucial processes in a future reactor burning plasma. These are: 1. the nonlinear excitation of meso-scale zonal field structures via modulational instability and TAE scattering into short-wavelength stable domain; 2. the TAE frequency cascading due to nonlinear ion induced scattering and the resulting saturated TAE spectrum; and 3. the cross-scale coupling of TAE with micro-scale ambient drift wave turbulence and its effect on TAE regulation and anomalous electron heating., Comment: submitted to Reviews of Modern Plasma Physics

Using electron drift wave (eDW) as a paradigm model, we have investigated analytically direct wave-wave interactions between a test DW and ambient toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmodes (TAE) in toroidal plasmas, and their effects on the stability of the eDW. The nonlinear effects enter via scatterings to short-wavelength electron Landau damped kinetic Alfv\'en waves (KAWs). Specifically, it is found that scatterings to upper-sideband KAW lead to stimulated absorption of eDW. Scatterings to the lower-sideband KAW, on the contrary, lead to its spontaneous emission. As a consequence, for typical parameters and fluctuation intensity, nonlinear scatterings by TAE have negligible net effects on the eDW stability; in contrast to the ``reverse" process investigated in Ref. [Nuclear Fusion {\bf 62}, 094001 (2022)], where it is shown that nonlinear scattering by ambient eDW may lead to significant damping of TAE., Comment: Submitted to Nuclear Fusion on March 19th, 2023

We present tensor-to-scalar ratio forecasts for GreenPol, a hypothetical ground-based B-mode experiment aiming to survey the cleanest regions of the Northern Galactic Hemisphere at five frequencies between 10 and 44 GHz. Its primary science goal would be to measure large-scale CMB polarization fluctuations at multipoles $\ell \lesssim 500$, and thereby constrain the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio. The observations for the suggested experiment would take place at the Summit Station (72deg N, 38deg W) on Greenland, at an altitude of 3216 m above sea level. In this paper we simulate various experimental setups, and derive limits on the tensor-to-scalar ratio after CMB component separation using a Bayesian component separation implementation called Commander. When combining the proposed experiment with Planck HFI observations for constraining polarized thermal dust emission, we find a projected limit of r<0.02 at 95 % confidence for the baseline configuration. This limit is very robust with respect to a range of important experimental parameters, including sky coverage, detector weighting, foreground priors etc. Overall, GreenPol would have the possibility to provide deep CMB polarization measurements of the Northern Galactic Hemisphere at low frequencies., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. In this work, we further develop a general phase-space transport theory in axisymmetric tokamak plasmas based upon the concept of zonal state (ZS). Within this theoretical framework, ZS corresponds to a renormalized nonlinear equilibrium consisting of phase space zonal structures (PSZS) and zonal electromagnetic fields (ZFs) which evolve self-consistently with symmetry breaking fluctuations and sources/collisions. More specifically, our theoretical approach involves deriving governing equations of the distribution function as well as applying the Chew Goldberger Low (CGL) description to separate the spatiotemporal microscale structures and the macro-/meso- scale components of this equilibrium. The nonlinear physics of zonal flows and of geodesic acoustic modes/energetic particle driven geodesic acoustic modes is then analyzed in details to illustrate the implications of this theoretical framework.

Electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves are known to exhibit frequency chirping, contributing to the rapid scattering and acceleration of energetic particles. However, the physical mechanism of chirping remains elusive. Here, we propose a new model to explain the chirping and provide direct observational evidence for validation. Our results relate the frequency chirping of the wave to both the wave amplitude and magnetic field inhomogeneity for the first time. The linear properties of the low-frequency shear Alfv\'en waves such as those associated with the beta-induced Alfv\'en eigenmodes (BAEs) and the low-frequency modes observed in reversed-magnetic-shear DIII-D discharges (W. Heidbrink, et al 2021 Nucl. Fusion 61 066031) are theoretically investigated and delineated based on the theoretical framework of the general fishbone-like dispersion relation (GFLDR). By adopting representative experimental equilibrium profiles, it is found that the low-frequency modes and BAEs are, respectively, the reactive-type and dissipative-type unstable modes with dominant Alfv\'enic polarization, thus the former being more precisely called low-frequency Alfv\'en modes (LFAMs). More specifically, due to different instability mechanisms, the maximal drive of BAEs occurs, in comparison to LFAMs, when the minimum of the safety factor ($q_{min}$) deviates from a rational number. Meanwhile, the BAE eigenfunction peaks at the radial position of the maximum energetic particle pressure gradient, resulting in a large deviation from the $q_{min}$ surface. Moreover, the ascending frequency spectrum patterns of the experimentally observed BAEs and LFAMs can be theoretically reproduced by varying $q_{min}$ and also be well interpreted based on the GFLDR. The present analysis illustrates the solid predictive capability of the GFLDR and its practical usefulness in enhancing the interpretative capability of both experimental and numerical simulation results.

Liger is a second generation near-infrared imager and integral field spectrograph (IFS) for the W. M. Keck Observatory that will utilize the capabilities of the Keck All-sky Precision Adaptive-optics (KAPA) system. Liger operates at a wavelength range of 0.81 {\mu}m - 2.45 {\mu}m and utilizes a slicer and a lenslet array IFS with varying spatial plate scales and fields of view resulting in hundreds of modes available to the astronomer. Because of the high level of complexity in the raw data formats for the slicer and lenslet IFS modes, Liger must be designed in conjunction with a Data Reduction System (DRS) which will reduce data from the instrument in real-time and deliver science-ready data products to the observer. The DRS will reduce raw imager and IFS frames from the readout system and provide 2D and 3D data products via custom quick-look visualization tools suited to the presentation of IFS data. The DRS will provide the reduced data to the Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) and will be available to astronomers for offline post-processing of observer data. The Astropy Project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly-developed Python packages that provide commonly needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key element of the Astropy Project is the core package $\texttt{astropy}$, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we summarize key features in the core package as of the recent major release, version 5.0, and provide major updates for the Project. We then discuss supporting a broader ecosystem of interoperable packages, including connections with several astronomical observatories and missions. We also revisit the future outlook of the Astropy Project and the current status of Learn Astropy. We demonstrate analytically that, in toroidal plasmas, scattering by drift wave turbulence could lead to appreciable damping of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes via generation of short-wavelength electron Landau damped kinetic Alfven waves. A corresponding analytic expression of the damping rate is derived, and found to be, typically, comparable to the linear drive by energetic particles. The implications of this novel mechanism on the transport and heating processes in burning plasmas are also discussed., Comment: submitted (April 2022)

The resonant and non-resonant effects of core plasma on the excitation of low frequency modes with $\omega < \omega_{BAE}$, such as Beta-induced Alfv\'en Acoustic Eigenmodes (BAAEs) and Kinetic Ballooning Modes (KBMs) are examined in the framework of the generalized fishbone-like dispersion relation. The formalism of the fishbone-like equation contains all the necessary ingredients to describe the features of these low frequency fluctuations, and explain experimental findings. Core plasma properties (diamagnetic frequency and precession resonance with trapped ions) strongly affect the excitation of the modes, and in the case of BAAEs more effectively than the energetic particles. The diamagnetic frequency of the core plasma also contributes to the coupling of the BAAEs with the KBMs, thus affecting the excitation and polarization of both modes. Energetic particles can still provide a non-resonant drive to some of the low frequency modes.

The confinement of Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) particles in the presence of n=3 Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) in 15 MA ITER DT plasmas has been studied using full orbit ASCOT simulations. Realistic NBI distribution functions, and 3D wall and equilibria, including the plasma response to the externally applied 3D fields calculated with MARS-F, have been employed. The observed total fast-ion losses depend on the poloidal spectra of the applied n=3 RMP as well as on the absolute toroidal phase of the applied perturbation with respect to the NBI birth distribution. The absolute toroidal phase of the RMP perturbation does not affect the ELM control capabilities, which makes it a key parameter in the confinement optimization. The physics mechanisms underlying the observed fast-ion losses induced by the applied 3D fields have been studied in terms of the variation of the particle canonical angular momentum ($\delta P_{\phi}$) induced by the applied 3D fields. The presented simulations indicate that the transport is located in an Edge Resonant Transport Layer (ERTL) as observed previously in ASDEX Upgrade studies. Similarly, our results indicate that an overlapping of several linear and nonlinear resonances at the edge of the plasma might be responsible for the observed fast-ion losses. The results presented here may help to optimize the RMP configuration with respect to the NBI confinement in future ITER discharges.

The Phase-I trigger readout electronics upgrade of the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeters enhances the physics reach of the experiment during the upcoming operation at increasing Large Hadron Collider luminosities. The new system, installed during the second Large Hadron Collider Long Shutdown, increases the trigger readout granularity by up to a factor of ten as well as its precision and range. Consequently, the background rejection at trigger level is improved through enhanced filtering algorithms utilizing the additional information for topological discrimination of electromagnetic and hadronic shower shapes. We set up a mapping procedure able to translate the evolution of the radial profile of fast ions, interacting with Toroidal Alfv\'en Eigenmodes, into the dynamics of an equivalent one dimensional bump-on-tail system. We apply this mapping technique to reproduce ITER relevant simulations, which clearly outlined deviations from the diffusive quasi-linear (QL) model. Our analysis demonstrates the capability of the one-dimensional beam-plasma dynamics to predict the relevant features of the non-linear hybrid LIGKA/HAGIS simulations. In particular, we clearly identify how the deviation from the QL evolutive profiles is due to the presence of avalanche processes. A detailed analysis regarding the reduced dimensionality is also addressed, by means of phase-space slicing based on constants of motion. The marine ecosystem is changing at an alarming rate, exhibiting biodiversity loss and the migration of tropical species to temperate basins. Monitoring the underwater environments and their inhabitants is of fundamental importance to understand the evolution of these systems and implement safeguard policies. However, assessing and tracking biodiversity is often a complex task, especially in large and uncontrolled environments, such as the oceans. One of the most popular and effective methods for monitoring marine biodiversity is passive acoustics monitoring (PAM), which employs hydrophones to capture underwater sound. Many aquatic animals produce sounds characteristic of their own species; these signals travel efficiently underwater and can be detected even at great distances. Furthermore, modern technologies are becoming more and more convenient and precise, allowing for very accurate and careful data acquisition. To date, audio captured with PAM devices is frequently manually processed by marine biologists and interpreted with traditional signal processing techniques for the detection of animal vocalizations. This is a challenging task, as PAM recordings are often over long periods of time. Moreover, one of the causes of biodiversity loss is sound pollution; in data obtained from regions with loud anthropic noise, it is hard to separate the artificial from the fish sound manually. Nowadays, machine learning and, in particular, deep learning represents the state of the art for processing audio signals. Specifically, sound separation networks are able to identify and separate human voices and musical instruments. In this work, we show that the same techniques can be successfully used to automatically extract fish vocalizations in PAM recordings, opening up the possibility for biodiversity monitoring at a large scale.

We discuss the treatment of bandpass and beam leakage corrections in the Bayesian BeyondPlanck CMB analysis pipeline as applied to the Planck LFI measurements. As a preparatory step, we first apply three corrections to the nominal LFI bandpass profiles including removal of a known systematic effect in the ground measuring equipment at 61 GHz; smoothing of standing wave ripples; and edge regularization. The main net impact of these modifications is an overall shift in the 70 GHz bandpass of +0.6 GHz; we argue that any analysis of LFI data products, either from Planck or BeyondPlanck, should use these new bandpasses. In addition, we fit a single free bandpass parameter for each radiometer of the form $\Delta_i = \Delta_0 + \delta_i$, where $\Delta_0$ represents an absolute frequency shift per frequency band and $\delta_i$ is a relative shift per detector. The absolute correction is only fitted at 30 GHz with a full $\chi^2$-based likelihood, resulting in a correction of $\Delta_{30}=0.24\pm0.03\,$GHz. The relative corrections are fitted using a spurious map approach, fundamentally similar to the method pioneered by the WMAP team, but without introducing many additional degrees of freedom. All bandpass parameters are sampled using a standard Metropolis sampler within the main BeyondPlanck Gibbs chain, and bandpass uncertainties are thus propagated to all other data products in the analysis. In total, we find that our bandpass model significantly reduces leakage effects. For beam leakage corrections, we adopt the official Planck LFI beam estimates without additional degrees of freedom, and only marginalize over the underlying sky model. Chirping Alfv\'{e}n modes are considered as potentially harmful in burning Tokamak plasmas. In this paper, the nonlinear evolution of a single-toroidal-number chirping mode is analysed by numerical particle simulation. This analysis can be simplified if the different resonant phase-space structures can be investigated as isolated ones. This can be done adopting a coordinate system that includes two constants of motion. In our simulations, we adopt as constants of motion, the magnetic momentum and the initial particle coordinates. For each resonant structure, a density-flattening region is formed around the respective resonance radius, with radial width that increases as the mode amplitude grows. It is delimited by two large negative density gradients, drifting inward and outward. With constant mode frequency, this density flattening would be responsible for the exhausting of the drive when large negative density gradients leave the resonance region. The frequency chirping, however, causes the resonance radius and the resonance region to drift inward. This drift delays the moment in which the inner density gradient reaches the inner boundary of the resonance region. On the other side, the island reconstitutes around the new resonance radius; as a consequence, the large negative density gradient further moves inward. This process continues as long as it allows to keep the large gradient within the resonance region. When this is no longer possible, the resonant structure ceases to be effective in driving the mode. Observing in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz over a large sky area, the Simons Observatory (SO) is poised to address many questions in Galactic astrophysics in addition to its principal cosmological goals. In this work, we provide quantitative forecasts on astrophysical parameters of interest for a range of Galactic science cases. We find that SO can: constrain the frequency spectrum of polarized dust emission at a level of $\Delta\beta_d \lesssim 0.01$ and thus test models of dust composition that predict that $\beta_d$ in polarization differs from that measured in total intensity; measure the correlation coefficient between polarized dust and synchrotron emission with a factor of two greater precision than current constraints; exclude the non-existence of exo-Oort clouds at roughly 2.9$\sigma$ if the true fraction is similar to the detection rate of giant planets; map more than 850 molecular clouds with at least 50 independent polarization measurements at 1 pc resolution; detect or place upper limits on the polarization fractions of CO(2-1) emission and anomalous microwave emission at the 0.1% level in select regions; and measure the correlation coefficient between optical starlight polarization and microwave polarized dust emission in $1^\circ$ patches for all lines of sight with $N_{\rm H} \gtrsim 2\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$. We introduce and validate a delensing framework for the Simons Observatory (SO), which will be used to improve constraints on inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs) by reducing the lensing noise in measurements of the $B$-modes in CMB polarization. SO will initially observe CMB by using three small aperture telescopes and one large-aperture telescope. While polarization maps from small-aperture telescopes will be used to constrain IGWs, the internal CMB lensing maps used to delens will be reconstructed from data from the large-aperture telescope. Since lensing maps obtained from the SO data will be noise-dominated on sub-degree scales, the SO lensing framework constructs a template for lensing-induced $B$-modes by combining internal CMB lensing maps with maps of the cosmic infrared background from Planck as well as galaxy density maps from the LSST survey. We construct a likelihood for constraining the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ that contains auto- and cross-spectra between observed $B$-modes and the lensing $B$-mode template. We test our delensing analysis pipeline on map-based simulations containing survey non-idealities, but that, for this initial exploration, does not include contamination from Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. We find that the SO survey masking and inhomogeneous and atmospheric noise have very little impact on the delensing performance, and the $r$ constraint becomes $\sigma(r)\approx 0.0015$ which is close to that obtained from the idealized forecasts in the absence of the Galactic foreground and is nearly a factor of two tighter than without delensing. We also find that uncertainties in the external large-scale structure tracers used in our multi-tracer delensing pipeline lead to bias much smaller than the $1\,\sigma$ statistical uncertainties., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

Trust is one of the hallmarks of human-human and human-robot interaction. Extensive evidence has shown that trust among humans requires reciprocity. Conversely, research in human-robot interaction (HRI) has mostly relied on a unidirectional view of trust that focuses on robots' reliability and performance. The current paper argues that reciprocity may also play a key role in the emergence of mutual trust and successful collaboration between humans and robots. We will gather and discuss works that reveal a reciprocal dimension in human-robot trust, paving the way to a bidirectional and dynamic view of trust in HRI.

The importance of the beam-plasma system in fusion physics relies on its capability in reproducing relevant features of energetic particles interacting with the Alfv\'enic spectrum. Recent observations in HL-2A tokamak give new experimental evidences of energetic particle mode (EPM) avalanche. In a strong EPM burst, the mode structure propagates radially outward within two hundred Alfv\'en time, while the frequency of the dominant mode changes self-consistently to maximize wave-particle power exchange and mode growth. This suggests that significant energetic particle transport occurs in this avalanche phase, in agreement with theoretical framework of EPM convective amplification. A simplified relay runner model yields satisfactory interpretations of the measurements. The results can help understanding the nonlinear dynamics of energetic particle driven modes in future burning plasmas, such as ITER.

The InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is the first-light client instrument for the Narrow Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS) on the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). Now approaching the end of its final design phase, we provide an overview of the instrument control software. The design is challenging since IRIS has interfaces with many systems at different stages of development (e.g., NFIRAOS, telescope control system, observatory sequencers), and will be built using the newly-developed TMT Common Software (CSW), which provides framework code (Java/Scala), and services (e.g., commands, telemetry). Lower-level software will be written in a combination of Java and C/C++ to communicate with hardware, such as motion controllers and infrared detectors. The Python Sky Model (PySM) is a Python package used by Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments to simulate maps, in HEALPix pixelization, of the various diffuse astrophysical components of Galactic emission relevant at CMB frequencies (i.e. dust, synchrotron, free-free and Anomalous Microwave Emission), as well as the CMB itself. These maps may be integrated over a given instrument bandpass and smoothed with a given instrument beam. PySM 2, released in 2016, has become the de-facto standard for simulating Galactic emission, for example it is used by CMB-S4, Simons Observatory, LiteBird, PICO, CLASS, POLARBEAR and other CMB experiments, as shown by the 80+ citations of the PySM 2 publication. As the resolution of upcoming experiments increases, the PySM 2 software has started to show some limitations, the solution to these issues was to reimplement PySM from scratch focusing on these features: reimplement all the models with the numba Just-In-Time compiler for Python to reduce memory overhead and optimize performance; use MPI through mpi4py to coordinate execution of PySM 3 across multiple nodes and rely on libsharp, for distributed spherical harmonic transforms; employ the data utilities infrastructure provided by astropy to download the input templates and cache them when requested. At this stage we strive to maintain full compatibility with PySM 2, therefore we implement the exact same astrophysical emission models with the same naming scheme. We propose a self-consistent theoretical framework of chorus wave excitation, which describes the evolution of the whistler fluctuation spectrum as well as the supra-thermal electron distribution function. The renormalized hot electron response is cast in the form of a Dyson-like equation, which then leads to evolution equations for nonlinear fluctuation growth and frequency shift. This approach allows us to analytically derive for the first time exactly the same expression for the chorus chirping rate originally proposed by Vomvoridis et al.,1982. Chorus chirping is shown to correspond to maximization of wave particle power exchange, where each individual wave belonging to the whistler wave packet is characterized by small nonlinear frequency shift. We also show that different interpretations of chorus chirping proposed in published literature have a consistent reconciliation within the present theoretical framework, which further illuminates the analogy with similar phenomena in fusion plasmas and free electron laser physics.
