A neutron star (NS) accreting matter from a companion star in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) system can spin up to become a millisecond pulsar (MSP). Properties of many such MSP systems are known, which is excellent for probing fundamental aspects of NS physics when modelled using the theoretical computation of NS LMXB evolution. Here, we systematically compute the long-term evolution of NS, binary, and companion parameters for NS LMXBs using the stellar evolution code mesa. We consider the baryonic to gravitational mass conversion to calculate the NS mass evolution and show its cruciality for the realistic computation of some parameters. With computations using many combinations of parameter values, we find the general nature of the complex NS spin frequency (⁠|$\nu$|⁠) evolution, which depends on various parameters, including accretion rate, fractional mass-loss from the system, and companion star magnetic braking. Further, we utilize our results to precisely match some main observed parameters, such as |$\nu$|⁠ , orbital period (⁠|$P_{\rm orb}$|⁠), etc. of four accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs). By providing the |$\nu$|⁠ , |$P_{\rm orb}$|⁠ , and the companion mass spaces for NS LMXB evolution, we indicate the distribution and plausible evolution of a few other AMXPs. We also discuss the current challenges in explaining the parameters of AMXP sources with brown dwarf companions and indicate the importance of modelling the transient accretion in LMXBs as a possible solution. Recently inaugurated telescopes, such as the MeerKAT radio telescope and the upcoming Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, will be able to detect millions of transient events in the night sky. Stellar collisions between white dwarfs (WDs) and main-sequence (MS) stars may be detectable among such transients. Simulations will play a key role in characterizing these events and selecting targets for follow-up. We present 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics models of dynamical interactions between a |$0.6\ {\rm M}_{\odot }$|  WD and 0.3, 0.6, and |$1.2\ {\rm M}_{\odot }$|  MS stars within globular cluster environments. Utilizing a 34-isotope nuclear network, we investigate the energetics, gas morphologies, and mass-loss properties of these collisions for different stellar mass ratios. Our models predict an overabundance of |$^{13}$| C, |$^{15}$| N, and |$^{17}$| O isotopes relative to solar abundances. Moreover, we find that the time-scale of the collisions is too short and maximum temperatures too low for any significant hydrogen burning or triple-alpha reactions to occur. This combined with a negligible production of elements heavier than neon may be key signatures in distinguishing these events from other transient events with similar peak bolometric luminosities (⁠|$\sim\!\! 10^{38}\!\!-\!\!10^{41}$|  erg s |$^{-1}$|⁠). Star formation is a multiscale problem, and only global simulations that account for the connection from the molecular cloud-scale gas flow to the accreting protostar can reflect the observed complexity of protostellar systems. Star-forming regions are characterized by supersonic turbulence, and as a result, it is not possible to simultaneously design models that account for the larger environment and in detail reproduce observed stellar systems. Instead, the stellar inventories can be matched statistically, and the best matches found that approximate specific observations. Observationally, a combination of single-dish telescopes and interferometers are now able to resolve the nearest protostellar objects on all scales from the protostellar core to the inner |$10\, \mathrm{au}$|⁠. We present a new non-parametric methodology which uses high-resolution simulations and post-processing methods to match simulations and observations using deep learning. Our goal is to perform a down-selection from large data sets of synthetic images to a ranked list of best-matching candidates with respect to the observation. This is particularly useful for binary and multiple stellar systems that form in turbulent environments. The objective is to accelerate the rate at which we can do such comparisons, remove biases from hand-picking matches, and contribute to identifying the underlying physical processes that drive the creation and evolution of observed protostellar systems. Protostellar binaries harbour complex environment morphologies. Observations represent a snapshot in time, and projection and optical depth effects impair our ability to interpret them. Careful comparison with high-resolution models that include the larger star-forming region can help isolate the driving physical processes and give context in the time domain to the observations. We carry out four zoom-in simulations with au scale resolution that result in three binaries and a single star. For the first time ever, we follow the detailed evolution of a protobinary in a full molecular cloud context until a circumbinary disc forms. We investigate the gas dynamics around the young stars and extract disc sizes. Using radiative transfer, we obtain the evolutionary tracer T bol of the binary systems. We find that the centrifugal radius in prestellar cores is a poor estimator of the resulting disc size due to angular momentum transport at all scales. For binaries, the disc sizes are regulated periodically by the binary orbit, having larger radii close to the apastron. The bolometric temperature differs systematically between edge-on and face-on views and shows a high-frequency time dependence correlated with the binary orbit and a low-frequency time dependence with larger episodic accretion events. These oscillations can cause the appearance of the system to change rapidly from class 0 to class I and, for short periods, even bring it to class II. The highly complex structure in early stages, as well as the binary orbit itself, affects the classical interpretation of protostellar classes, and the direct translation to evolutionary stages has to be done with caution and include other evolutionary indicators such as the extent of envelope material. We investigate the effect of the cutting-edge circumbinary disc (CBD) evolution models on massive black hole binary (MBHB) populations and the gravitational wave background (GWB). We show that CBD-driven evolution leaves a tell-tale signature in MBHB populations, by driving binaries towards an equilibrium eccentricity that depends on the binary mass ratio. We find high orbital eccentricities (⁠|$e_{\rm b} \sim 0.5$|⁠) as MBHBs enter multimessenger observable frequency bands. The CBD-induced eccentricity distribution of MBHB populations in observable bands is independent of the initial eccentricity distribution at binary formation, erasing any memory of eccentricities induced in the large-scale dynamics of merging galaxies. Our results suggest that eccentric MBHBs are the rule rather than the exception in upcoming transient surveys, provided that CBDs regularly form in MBHB systems. We show that the GWB amplitude is sensitive to CBD-driven preferential accretion onto the secondary, resulting in an increase in GWB amplitude |$A_{\rm yr^{-1}}$| by over 100 per cent with just 10 per cent Eddington accretion. As we self-consistently allow for binary hardening and softening, we show that CBD-driven orbital expansion does not diminish the GWB amplitude, and instead increases the amplitude by a small amount. We further present detection rates and population statistics of MBHBs with |$M_{\rm b} \gtrsim 10^6 \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$| in Laser Interferometer Space Antenna , showing that most binaries have equal mass ratios and can retain residual eccentricities up to |$e_{\rm b} \sim 10^{-3}$| due to CBD-driven evolution. Galactic white dwarf binaries (WDBs) and black hole binaries (BHBs) will be gravitational wave (GW) sources for LISA. Their detection will provide insights into binary evolution and the evolution of our Galaxy through cosmic history. Here, we make predictions of the expected WDB and BHB population within our Galaxy. We combine predictions of the compact remnant binary populations expected by stellar evolution from the detailed Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis (BPASS) code, with a Milky Way analogue galaxy model from the Feedback in Realistic Environment (FIRE) simulations. We use PhenomA and legwork to simulate LISA observations. Both packages make similar predictions that on average four Galactic BHBs and 673 Galactic WDBs are above the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold of 7 after a four-year mission. We compare these predictions to earlier results using the binary star evolution (BSE) code with the same FIRE model galaxy. We find that BPASS predicts a few more LISA observable Galactic BHBs and a twentieth of the Galactic WDBs. The differences are due to the different physical assumptions that have gone into the binary evolution calculations. These results indicate that the expected population of compact binaries that LISA will detect depends very sensitively on the binary population synthesis models used and thus observations of the LISA population will provide tight constraints on our modelling of binary stars. Millisecond pulsars with white dwarf companions have typical eccentricities |$e\sim 10^{-6}{\!-\!}10^{-3}$|⁠. The eccentricities of helium white dwarfs are explained well by applying the fluctuation–dissipation theorem to convective eddies in their red giant progenitors. We extend this theory to more massive carbon–oxygen (CO) white dwarfs with asymptotic giant branch (AGB) progenitors. Due to the radiation pressure in AGB stars, the dominant factor in determining the remnant white dwarf's eccentricity is the critical residual hydrogen envelope mass |$m_{\rm env}$| required to inflate the star to giant proportions. Using a suite of mesa stellar evolution simulations with |$\Delta m_{\rm c}=10^{-3}\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$| core-mass intervals, we resolved the AGB thermal pulses and found that the critical |$m_{\rm env}\propto m_{\rm c}^{-6}$|⁠. The resulting eccentricity |$e\sim 3\times 10^{-3}$| is almost independent of the remnant CO white dwarf's mass |$m_{\rm c}$|⁠. Nearly all of the measured eccentricities lie below this robust theoretical limit, indicating that the eccentricity is damped during the common-envelope inspiral that follows the unstable Roche lobe overflow of the AGB star. Specifically, we focused on white dwarfs with median masses |$m_{\rm c}\gt 0.6\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠. These massive white dwarfs begin their inspiral with practically identical orbital periods and eccentricities, eliminating any dependence on the initial conditions. For this sub-sample, we find an empirical relation |$e\propto P^{3/2}$| between the final period and eccentricity that is much tighter than previous studies – motivating theoretical work on the eccentricity evolution during the common envelope phase. The Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP) survey used transit photometry to discover nearly 200 gas-giant exoplanets and derive their planetary and stellar parameters. Reliable determination of the planetary density depends on accurate measurement of the planet's radius, obtained from the transit depth and photodynamical determination of the stellar radius. The stellar density and hence the stellar radius are typically determined in a model-independent way from the star's reflex orbital acceleration and the transit profile. Additional flux coming from the system due to a bright, undetected stellar binary companion can, however, potentially dilute the transit curve and radial velocity signal, leading to underestimation of the planet's mass and radius, and to overestimation of the planet's density. In this study, we cross-check the published radii of all the WASP planet-host stars, determined from their transit profiles and radial velocity curves, against radiometric measurements of stellar radii derived from their angular diameters (via the infrared flux method) and trigonometric parallaxes. We identify eight systems showing radiometric stellar radii significantly greater than their published photodynamical values: WASPs 20, 85, 86, 103, 105, 129, 144, and 171. We investigate these systems in more detail to establish plausible ranges of angular and radial velocity separations within which such 'stealth binaries' could evade detection, and deduce their likely orbital periods, mass ratios, and flux ratios. After accounting for the dilution of transit depth and radial velocity amplitude, we find that, on average, the planetary densities for the identified stealth binary systems should be reduced by a factor of 1.3. Relativistic discrete ejecta launched by black hole X-ray binaries (BH XRBs) can be observed to propagate up to parsec-scales from the central object. Observing the final deceleration phase of these jets is crucial to estimate their physical parameters and to reconstruct their full trajectory, with implications for the jet powering mechanism, composition, and formation. In this paper, we present the results of the modelling of the motion of the ejecta from three BH XRBs: MAXI J1820 |$+$| 070, MAXI J1535–571, and XTE J1752–223, for which high-resolution radio and X-ray observations of jets propagating up to |$\sim$| 15 arcsec (⁠|$\sim$| 0.6 pc at 3 kpc) from the core have been published in the recent years. For each jet, we modelled its entire motion with a dynamical blast-wave model, inferring robust values for the jet Lorentz factor, inclination angle and ejection time. Under several assumptions associated to the ejection duration, the jet opening angle and the available accretion power, we are able to derive stringent constraints on the maximum jet kinetic energy for each source (between |$10^{43}$| and |$10^{44}$| erg, including also H1743–322), as well as placing interesting upper limits on the density of the ISM through which the jets are propagating (from |$n_{\rm ISM} \lesssim 0.4$| cm |$^{-3}$| down to |$n_{\rm ISM} \lesssim 10^{-4}$| cm |$^{-3}$|⁠). Overall, our results highlight the potential of applying models derived from gamma-ray bursts to the physics of jets from BH XRBs and support the emerging picture of these sources as preferentially embedded in low-density environments. Pair-instability supernovae (PISNe) have long been predicted to be the final fates of near-zero-metallicity very massive stars (⁠|$Z \lt Z_\odot /3$|⁠ , M |$_\mathrm{ZAMS} \gtrsim 140\, \text{M}_\odot$|⁠). However, no definite PISN has been observed to date, leaving theoretical modelling validation open. To investigate the observability of these explosive transients, we combine detailed stellar evolution models for PISNe formation, computed from the binary population and spectral synthesis code suite, bpass , with the star formation history of all individual computational elements in the Illustris-TNG simulation. This allows us to compute comic PISN rates and predict their host galaxy properties. Of particular importance is that IllustrisTNG galaxies do not have uniform metallicities throughout, with metal-enriched galaxies often harbouring metal-poor pockets of gas where PISN progenitors may form. Accounting for the chemical inhomogeneities within these galaxies, we find that the peak redshift of PISNe formation is |$z=3.5$| instead of the value of |$z=6$| when ignoring chemical inhomogeneities within galaxies. Furthermore, the rate increases by an order of magnitude from 1.9 to 29 PISN Gpc |$^{-3}$| yr |$^{-1}$| at |$z=0$|⁠ , if the chemical inhomogeneities are considered. Using state-of-the-art theoretical PISN light curves, we find an observed rate of 13.8 (1.2) visible PISNe per year for the Euclid-Deep survey, or 83 (7.3) over the 6-yr lifetime of the mission when considering chemically inhomogeneous (homogenous) systems. Interestingly, only 12 per cent of helium PISN progenitors are sufficiently massive to power a superluminous supernova event, which can potentially explain why PISN identification in time-domain surveys remains elusive and progress requires dedicated strategies. We present the Ultracool Dwarf Companion Catalogue of 278 multiple systems, 32 of which are newly discovered, each with at least one spectroscopically confirmed Ultracool Dwarf, within a 100 pc volume-limited sample. This catalogue is compiled using the Gaia Catalogue of Nearby Stars for stellar primaries and the Gaia Ultracool Dwarf Sample for low-mass companions and includes 241 doubles, 33 triples, and 4 higher-order systems established from positional, proper motion, and parallax constraints. The catalogue seeks to identify probable benchmark systems within 100 pc to obtain model-independent astrophysical parameters of Ultracool Dwarfs. Chance alignment probabilities are calculated to evaluate the physical nature of each system. Astrometric and photometric data from Gaia Data Release 3 and the Two Micron All Sky Survey are included for all objects. We identify potential unseen companions using a combination of the renormalized unit weight error, image parameter determination statistics, non-single star solutions, and photometric blending as provided by Gaia , identifying hierarchical Ultracool triple systems. Our catalogue includes 17 White Dwarf – Ultracool Dwarf systems, whose ages are determined using cooling models. We also use the Gaia FLAME results and the BANYAN Σ procedures to age 40 and 34 systems, respectively, and derive mass estimates from evolutionary models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The correction map method means extended phase-space algorithm with correction map. In our research, we have developed a correction map method, specifically the dissipated correction map method with trapezoidal rule, for numerical simulations of gravitational waves from spinning compact binary systems. This new correction map method, denoted as |$CM3$|⁠ , has shown remarkable performance in various simulation results, such as phase-space distance, dissipated energy error, and gravitational waveform, closely resembling the high-order precision implicit Gaussian algorithm. When compared with the previously used mid-point map which is denoted as |$C_2$|⁠ , the |$CM3$| consistently exhibits a closer alignment with the highly accurate Gaussian algorithm in waveform evolution and orbital trajectory analysis. Through detailed comparisons and analyses, it is evident that |$CM3$| outperforms other algorithms, including |$CM2$| and |$C_2$| mentioned in this paper, in terms of accuracy and precision in simulating spinning compact binary systems. The incorporation of the trapezoidal rule and the optimization with a scale factor |$\gamma$| have significantly enhanced the performance of |$CM3$|⁠ , making it a promising method for future numerical simulations in astrophysics. It has been generally accepted that the originators of the double star astronomy were Christian Mayer and William Herschel. We recovered the memory of the poorly known Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodierna, who published the first catalogue of stellar binaries over a century before Mayer and Herschel. We analysed the fourth section of 1654 G. B. Hodierna's book ' De systemate orbis cometici deque admirandis coeli characteribus '. There, Hodierna listed a dozen pairs of stars whose identification with modern star names had been lost for centuries. To identify the pairs, we used Hodierna's Latin descriptions of location in constellations for all primary stars, ecliptic coordinates and angular separations to companions for some, and the Washington Double Star, Hipparcos , and Gaia catalogues. We were able to identify the twelve primaries and eleven multiple systems with companions, of which nine were double and two were triple. Besides, with up-to-date data, we confirmed that four systems are physically bound: Atlas and Pleione, |$\alpha ^{1,2}$| Lib, |$\nu ^{1,2}$| Dra, and |$\theta ^{1}$| Ori A, C, and D. Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) are stars which have been ejected from the Galactic Centre (GC) at velocities of up to a few thousand |$\text{km}\, \text{s}^{-1}$|⁠. They are tracers of the Galactic potential and can be used to infer properties of the GC, such as the initial mass function and assembly history. HVSs are rare, however, with only about a dozen promising candidates discovered so far. In this work, we make use of a novel, highly efficient method to identify new HVS candidates in Gaia. This method uses the nearly radial trajectories of HVSs to infer their distances and velocities based on their position and Gaia proper motion alone. Through comparison of inferred distances with Gaia parallaxes and photometry, we identified 600 HVS candidates with G < 20 including the previously discovered S5-HVS1, out of which we obtained ground-based follow-up observations for 196 stars. As we found no new HVSs based on their radial velocity, we used detailed HVS ejection simulations to significantly improve previous HVS ejection rate constraints. In particular, the ejection rate of HVSs more massive than 1 |$\mathrm{M_\odot }$| cannot be higher than |$10^{-5}$| yr |$^{-1}$| at |$2\sigma$| significance. Additionally, we predict that there are 5–45 unbound HVSs in the complete Gaia catalogue (⁠|$1\sigma$| interval), most of which will be main-sequence stars of a few M |$_\odot$| at heliocentric distances of tens to hundreds of kpc. By comparing our results to literature HVS candidates, we find an indication of either a time-dependent ejection rate of HVSs or a non-GC origin of previously identified HVS candidates. Many circumbinary gas giant planets have been recently discovered. The formation mechanism of circumbinary planets on wide orbits is unclear. We investigate the formation of Delorme 1 (AB)b, a |$13 \pm 5 \ \mathrm{ M_J}$| planet, orbiting its host binary at 84 au. The planet is accreting while having an estimated age of 40 Myr, which is unexpected, as this process should have ceased due to the dissipation of the protoplanetary disc. Using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics code seren , we model three formation scenarios for this planet. In Scenario I, the planet forms in situ on a wide orbit in a massive disc (by gravitational instability), in Scenario II closer to the binary in a massive disc (by gravitational instability), and in Scenario III much closer to the binary in a less massive disc (by core accretion). Planets in Scenario I stay at the observed separation and have mass accretion rates consistent with observed value, but their final mass is too high. In Scenario II, the planet reaches the observed separation through outward migration or scattering by the binary, and has mass accretion rate comparable to the observed; however, the planet mass is above the observed value. In Scenario III, the planet's final mass and mass accretion rate are comparable to the observed ones, but the planet's separation is smaller. We conclude that all models may explain some features of the observations but not all of them, raising questions about how gas is accreted on to the planet from its circumplanetary disc, and the presumed age of the system. We present the analysis of the microlensing event OGLE-2015-BLG-0845, which was affected by both the microlensing parallax and xallarap effects. The former was detected via the simultaneous observations from the ground and Spitzer , and the latter was caused by the orbital motion of the source star in a relatively close binary. The combination of these two effects led to a mass measurement of the lens object, revealing a low-mass (⁠|$0.14 \pm 0.05 \, \mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$|⁠) M dwarf at the bulge distance (⁠|$7.6 \pm 1.0$| kpc). The source binary consists of a late F-type subgiant and a K-type dwarf of |$\sim 1.2$| and |$\sim 0.9 \mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$|⁠ , respectively, and the orbital period is |$70 \pm 10$| d. OGLE-2015-BLG-0845 is the first single-lens event in which the lens mass is measured via the binarity of the source. Given the abundance of binary systems as potential microlensing sources, the xallarap effect may not be a rare phenomenon. Our work thus highlights the application of the xallarap effect in the mass determination of microlenses, and the same method can be used to identify isolated dark lenses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the thermodynamics of close encounters between stellar mass black holes (BHs) in the gaseous discs of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), during which binary black holes (BBHs) may form. We consider a suite of 2D viscous hydrodynamical simulations within a shearing box prescription using the Eulerian grid code athena ++. We study formation scenarios where the fluid is either an isothermal gas or an adiabatic mixture of gas and radiation in local thermal equilibrium. We include the effects of viscous and shock heating, as well as optically thick cooling. We co-evolve the embedded BHs with the gas, keeping track of the energetic dissipation and torquing of the BBH by gas and inertial forces. We find that compared to the isothermal case, the minidiscs formed around each BH are significantly hotter and more diffuse, though BBH formation is still efficient. We observe massive blast waves arising from collisions between the radiative minidiscs during both the initial close encounter and subsequent periapsis periods for successfully bound BBHs. These 'disc novae' have a profound effect, depleting the BBH Hill sphere of gas and injecting energy into the surrounding medium. In analysing the thermal emission from these events, we observe periodic peaks in local luminosity associated with close encounters/periapses, with emission peaking in the optical/near-infrared (IR). In the AGN outskirts, these outbursts can reach 4 per cent of the AGN luminosity in the IR band, with flares rising over 0.5–1 yr. We report the discovery of five white dwarf + ultracool dwarf systems identified as common proper motion wide binaries in the Gaia Catalogue of Nearby Stars. The discoveries include a white dwarf + L subdwarf binary, VVV 1256−62AB, a gravitationally bound system located 75.6 |$^{+1.9}_{-1.8}$|  pc away with a projected separation of 1375 |$^{+35}_{-33}$|  au. The primary is a cool DC white dwarf with a hydrogen dominated atmosphere, and has a total age of |$10.5^{+3.3}_{-2.1}$|  Gyr, based on white dwarf model fitting. The secondary is an L subdwarf with a metallicity of [M/H] = |$-0.72^{+0.08}_{-0.10}$| (i.e. [Fe/H] = |$-0.81\pm 0.10$|⁠) and |$T_{\rm eff}$| = 2298 |$^{+45}_{-43}$|  K based on atmospheric model fitting of its optical to near infrared spectrum, and likely has a mass just above the stellar/substellar boundary. The subsolar metallicity of the L subdwarf and the system's total space velocity of 406 km s−1 indicates membership in the Galactic halo, and it has a flat eccentric Galactic orbit passing within 1 kpc of the centre of the Milky Way every |$\sim$| 0.4 Gyr and extending to 15–31 kpc at apogal. VVV 1256−62B is the first L subdwarf to have a well-constrained age, making it an ideal benchmark of metal-poor ultracool dwarf atmospheres and evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Rossiter–McLaughlin effect measures the misalignment between a planet's orbital plane and its host star's rotation plane. Around 10 per cent of planets exhibit misalignments in the approximate range 80°–125°, with their origin remaining a mystery. On the other hand, large misalignments may be common in eccentric circumbinary systems due to misaligned discs undergoing polar alignment. If the binary subsequently merges, a polar circumbinary disc – along with any planets that form within it – may remain inclined near 90 |$^{\circ }$| to the merged star's rotation. To test this hypothesis, we present N -body simulations of the evolution of a polar circumbinary debris disc comprised of test particles around an eccentric binary during a binary merger that is induced by tidal dissipation. After the merger, the disc particles remain on near-polar orbits. Interaction of the binary with the polar-aligned gas disc may be required to bring the binary to the small separations that trigger the merger by tides. Our findings imply that planets forming in discs that are polar-aligned to the orbit of a high-eccentricity binary may, following the merger of the binary, provide a possible origin for the population of near-polar planets around single stars. Binary star systems are expected to follow Newtonian dynamics similarly to planetary systems. However, reports have been made of wide binary systems with separations around 0.01 pc and larger, showing potential deviations from standard Newtonian motion. This phenomenon, suggestive of the flattening of galactic rotation curves, calls for closer inspection. This study presents an analysis of wide binary stars using data from Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3), a space-based astrometry mission funded by the European Space Agency. The study compares different choices of selection criteria to examine the nature of these apparent anomalous kinematics within the solar neighbourhood. The Gaia data set furnishes detailed parameters, including radial velocity, mass, age, and binary probability in addition to standard parameters. A custom Python tool named bynary facilitated both data processing and analysis. This report reveals that the signs of any anomalous signals systematically diminish as the initial selection criteria are relaxed for degrouping while subsequent filtering remains stringent, leading to the complete elimination of any apparent non-Newtonian motion for binary separations within 0.5 pc. The study shows that any observed anomalous behaviour in solar neighbourhood wide binaries within 130 pc must be produced either by faint companion stars orbiting primary or secondary stars, or by flyby stars. The findings emphasize the importance of the choice of selection criteria in disentangling genuine binary dynamics from external influences. Over the last couple of years, the appearance of the third data release from the Gaia satellite has triggered various wide binary low acceleration gravity tests. Wide binaries with typical total masses |$\approx 1.0 - 1.6\,\mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$| and separations above a few thousand au probe the low acceleration |$a \lesssim a_{0}$| regime, where at galactic and larger scales gravitational anomalies typically attributed to the presence of an as yet undetected dark matter component appear, where |$a_{0} \approx 1.2\times 10^{-10}$| m s |$^{-2}$| is the acceleration scale of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). Thus, studies of the relative velocities and separations on the plane of the sky, |$v_{2\mathrm{ D}}$| and |$s_{2\mathrm{ D}}$|⁠ , respectively, of wide binary stars extending to separations above a few kau, provide an independent approach on the empirical study of gravity in the interesting |$a \lesssim a_{0}$| acceleration range. Two independent groups, through complementary approaches, have obtained evidence for a departure from Newtonian predictions in the low acceleration regime, in consistency with MOND expectations for wide binary orbits in the Solar Neighbourhood. Two other groups however, have instead reported results showing a clear preference for Newtonian gravity over various MOND alternatives tested, over the same low acceleration regime. We here take a critical look at the various studies in question, from sample selection to statistical treatment of the wide binary relative velocities obtained. We discover a couple of critical problems in the formal design and statistical implementation shared by the two latter groups, and show explicitly how these yield biased conclusions. Disc warping, and possibly disc breaking, has been observed in protoplanetary discs around both single and multiple stars. Large warps can break the disc, producing multiple observational signatures. In this work, we use comparisons of disc time-scales to derive updated formulae for disc breaking, with better predictions as to when and where a disc is expected to break and how many breaks could occur. Disc breaking is more likely for discs with small inner cavities, cooler temperatures, and steeper power-law profiles, such that thin, polar-aligning discs are more likely to break. We test our analytical formulae using three-dimensional grid-based simulations of protoplanetary discs warped by the gravitational torque of an inner binary. We reproduce the expected warp behaviours in different viscosity regimes and observe disc breaking at locations in agreement with our derived equations. As our simulations only show disc breaking when disc viscosity is low, we also consider a viscous criterion for disc breaking, where rapid alignment to the precession vector can prevent a break by reducing the maximum misalignment between neighbouring rings. We apply these results to the GW Orionis circumtriple disc and find that the precession induced from the central stars can break the disc if it is relatively thin. We expect repeated or multiple disc breaking to occur for discs with sufficiently steep power-law profiles. We simulate a polar-aligning disc around an eccentric binary with steep power-law profiles and observe two separate breaking events at locations in rough agreement with our analytical predictions. Radiation-driven outflows play a crucial role in extracting mass and angular momentum from binary systems undergoing rapid mass transfer at super-Eddington rates. To study the mass transfer process from a massive donor star to a stellar-mass black hole (BH), we perform multidimensional radiation-hydrodynamical simulations that follow accretion flows from the first Lagrange point down to about a hundred times the Schwarzschild radius of the accreting BH. Our simulations reveal that rapid mass transfer occurring at over a thousand times the Eddington rate leads to significant mass-loss from the accretion disc via radiation-driven outflows. Consequently, the inflow rates at the innermost radius are regulated by two orders of magnitude smaller than the transfer rates. We find that convective motions within the accretion disc drive outward energy and momentum transport, enhancing the radiation pressure in the outskirts of the disc and ultimately generating large-scale outflows with sufficient energy to leave the binary. Furthermore, we observe strong anisotropy in the outflows, which occur preferentially toward both the closest and furthest points from the donor star. However, when averaged over all directions, the specific angular momentum of the outflows is nearly comparable to the value predicted in the isotropic emission case. Based on our simulation results, we propose a formula that quantifies the mass growth rates on BHs and the mass-loss rates from binaries due to radiation-driven outflows. How massive stars end their lives depends on the core mass, core angular momentum, and hydrogen envelopes at death. However, these key physical facets of stellar evolution can be severely affected by binary interactions. In turn, the effectiveness of binary interactions itself varies greatly depending on the initial conditions of the binaries, making the situation much more complex. We investigate systematically how binary interactions influence core–collapse progenitors and their fates. Binary evolution simulations are performed to survey the parameter space of supernova progenitors in solar metallicity binary systems and to delineate major evolutionary paths. We first study fixed binary mass ratios (⁠|$q=M_2/M_1$| = 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9) to elucidate the impacts of initial mass and initial separation on the outcomes, treating separately Type Ibc supernova, Type II supernova, accretion-induced collapse (AIC), rapidly rotating supernova (Ibc-R), black hole formation, and long gamma ray burst (long GRB). We then conduct 12 binary population synthesis model calculations, varying the initial condition distributions and binary evolution parameters, to estimate various supernova fractions. We obtain a Milky Way supernova rate |$R_{\rm SN} = (1.78$| – |$2.47) \times 10^{-2} \, {\rm yr}^{-1}$| which is consistent with observations. We find the rates of AIC, Ibc-R, and long GRB to be |$\sim 1/100$| the rate of regular supernovae. Our estimated long GRB rates are higher than the observed long GRB rate and close to the low luminosity GRB rate, although care must be taken considering our models are computed with solar metallicity. Many of the most intriguing features, including spirals and cavities, in the current disc observations are found in binary systems like GG Tau, HD 142527, or HD 100453. Such features are evidence of the dynamic interactions between binary stars and the viscous disc. Understanding these dynamic interactions and how they result in the structure and growth of asymmetric circumbinary discs is a difficult problem, for which there is no complete analytical solution, that predicts the shape of the observed disc accurately. We use numerical simulations to evolve circumbinary discs with varying disc viscosities and investigate the size and shape of the inner cavities in such protoplanetary discs. We have simulated over 140 locally isothermal 2D grid-based disc models for |$\ge$| 3 × 104 binary orbits each and mapped out the parameter space relevant for protoplanetary discs. With this, it becomes possible to create parametrized profiles for individual discs to compare to observations and find limits to their binary eccentricity or internal viscosity from the simulation data. In the long-term simulations, larger cavity sizes than previously considered are possible within the parameter space (⁠|$\le$| 6 binary separations). As an example, we find that the eccentricity of the disc around HD 142527 suggests the impact of the binary dynamics on the disc. However, even considering the larger cavity sizes, the large size of the cavity in HD 142527 remains unexplained by the simulations considering the most recent orbital constraints. We study the wide-binary eccentricity (e) distribution in young star clusters and the role of turbulence in setting the form of the e distribution using magnetohydrodynamical simulations of star cluster formation. The simulations incorporate gravity, turbulence, magnetic fields, protostellar heating, and jets/outflows. We find that (1) simulations that employ purely compressive turbulence driving produce binaries with a superthermal e distribution [ |$\alpha \gt 1$| in |$p(e) \propto e^\alpha$| ], while simulations with purely solenoidal driving or natural mixture of driving modes produce subthermal/thermal distributions (⁠|$\alpha \le$| 1), (2) the e distribution over the full range of binary separations in our simulations is set at the early stages of the star cluster formation process, (3) while binaries (separation of |$r_{\mathrm{pair}} \le 1000\, \mathrm{AU}$|⁠) have subthermal to thermal e distributions (⁠|$\alpha \sim 0.8$|⁠), wide binaries (⁠|$r_{\mathrm{pair}} \gt 1000\, \mathrm{AU}$|⁠) have a superthermal distribution (⁠|$\alpha \sim 1.8$|⁠), and (4) low-mass binary systems (system masses of |$M_{\mathrm{sys}} \le 0.8\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠) have a highly superthermal distribution (⁠|$\alpha \sim 2.4$|⁠), whereas high-mass systems (⁠|$M_{\mathrm{sys}} \gt 0.8\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠) exhibit a subthermal/thermal distribution (⁠|$\alpha \sim 0.8$|⁠). The binary eccentricity distribution is often modelled as a thermal distribution. However, our results suggest that the e distribution depends on the range of separation of the sampled binaries, which agrees with the findings from recent Gaia observations. We conclude that the dependence of the e distribution on the binary separation and mass is linked to the binary formation mechanism governed by the turbulent properties of the parent cloud. We report results from 8 h of JWST /MIRI low resolution spectroscopic (LRS) monitoring directly followed by 7 h of JWST /NIRSpec prism spectroscopic monitoring of the benchmark binary brown dwarf WISE 1049AB, the closest, brightest brown dwarfs known. We find water, methane, and CO absorption features in both components, including the 3.3  μ m methane absorption feature and a tentative detection of small grain (⁠|$\lt $| 1 μ m) silicate absorption at |$\gt $| 8.5 μ m in WISE 1049A. Both components vary significantly (⁠|$\gt 1~{{\rm per\ cent}}$|⁠), with WISE 1049B displaying larger variations than WISE 1049A. Using K -means clustering, we find three main transition points in wavelength for both components of the binary: (1) change in behaviour at |$\sim$| 2.3 μ m coincident with a CO absorption bandhead, (2) change in behaviour at 4.2 μ m, close to the CO fundamental band at |$\lambda \gt $|  4.4 µm, and (3) change in behaviour at 8.3–8.5 µm, potentially corresponding to silicate absorption. We interpret the light curves observed with both NIRSpec and MIRI as likely stemming from (1) a deep pressure level driving the double-peaked variability seen in WISE 1049B at wavelengths |$\lt $| 2.3 and |$\gt $| 8.5 µm, (2) an intermediate pressure level shaping the light-curve morphology between 2.3 and 4.2 µm, and (3) a higher altitude pressure level producing single-peaked and plateaued light-curve behaviour between 4.2 and 8.5 µm. General-relativistic equilibria of differentially rotating stars are expected in a number of astrophysical scenarios, from core-collapse supernovae to the remnant of binary neutron-star mergers. The latter, in particular, have been the subject of extensive studies where they were modelled with a variety of laws of differential rotation with varying degree of realism. Starting from accurate and fully general-relativistic simulations of binary neutron-star mergers with various equations of state and mass ratios, we establish the time when the merger remnant has reached a quasi-stationary equilibrium and extract in this way realistic profiles of differential rotation. This allows us to explore how well traditional laws reproduce such differential-rotation properties and to derive new laws of differential rotation that better match the numerical data in the low-density Keplerian regions of the remnant. In this way, we have obtained a novel and somewhat surprising result: the dynamical stability line to quasi-radial oscillations computed from the turning-point criterion can have a slope that is not necessarily negative with respect to the central rest-mass density, as previously found with traditional differential-rotation laws. Indeed, for stellar models reproducing well the properties of the merger remnants, the slope is actually positive, thus reflecting remnants with angular momentum at large distances from the rotation axis, and hence with cores having higher central rest-mass densities and slower rotation rates. Origin of LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave events may involve production of binaries with relativistic components in dense stellar systems – globular or nuclear star clusters – and their subsequent evolution towards merger. Orbital parameters of these binaries (the inner orbit) and their motion inside the cluster (the outer orbit) evolve due to both external agents – random encounters with cluster stars and cluster tides due to the smooth cluster potential – and the internal ones – various sources of dissipation and precession within the binary. We present a numerical framework – binary evolution in stellar clusters (besc) – that follows the evolution of the binary inner and outer orbits accounting for all these effects simultaneously, enabling efficient Monte Carlo studies. The secular effect of cluster tides is computed in the singly averaged approximation, without averaging over the outer binary orbit. As to stellar encounters, we include the effects of both close and distant flybys on the inner and outer orbits of the binary, respectively. Also, given our focus on the LIGO/Virgo sources, we include the general relativistic precession (which suppresses cluster tides at high eccentricities) and the gravitational wave emission (shrinking the binary orbit). We use besc to illustrate a number of characteristic binary evolutionary outcomes and discuss relative contributions of different physical processes. In particular, we find that stellar encounters often dominate over the cluster tides in the evolution of compact binaries. besc can also be used to study other objects in clusters, e.g. blue stragglers, hot Jupiters, X-ray binaries, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate close encounters by stellar mass black holes (BHs) in the gaseous discs of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as a potential formation channel of binary black holes (BBHs). We perform a series of 2D isothermal viscous hydrodynamical simulations within a shearing box prescription using the Eulerian grid code Athena++. We co-evolve the embedded BHs with the gas keeping track of the energetic dissipation and torquing of the BBH by gas gravitation and inertial forces. To probe the dependence of capture on the initial conditions, we discuss a suite of 345 simulations spanning BBH impact parameter (b) and local AGN disc density (ρ0). We identify a clear region in b − ρ0 space where gas assisted BBH capture is efficient. We find that the presence of gas leads to strong energetic dissipation during close encounters between unbound BHs, forming stably bound eccentric BBHs. We find that the gas dissipation during close encounters increases for systems with increased disc density and deeper periapsis passages r p, fitting a power law such that |$\Delta E \propto \rho _0^{\alpha }r_{\mathrm{p}}^{\beta }$|⁠ , where {α, β} = {1.01 ± 0.04, −0.43 ± 0.03}. Alternatively, the gas dissipation is approximately Δ E  = 4.3 M d v H v p, where M d is the mass of a single BH minidisc just prior to the encounter when the binary separation is 2 r H (two binary Hill radii), v H and v p are the relative BH velocities at 2 r H and at the first closest approach, respectively. We derive a prescription for capture which can be used in semi-analytical models of AGN. We do not find the dissipative dynamics observed in these systems to be in agreement with the simple gas dynamical friction models often used in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to the strange quark matter hypothesis, strange planets may exist, which are planetary mass objects composed of almost equal numbers of up, down, and strange quarks. A strange planet can revolve around its host strange star in a very close-in orbit. When it finally merges with the host, strong gravitational wave emissions will be generated. Here, the gravitational waveforms are derived for the merging process, taking into account the effects of the strange star's magnetic field on the dynamics. Effects of the inclination angle are also considered. Templates of the gravitational waveforms are derived. It is found that the magnetic interactions significantly speed up the merging process. Coalescence events of such strange planetary systems occurring in our Galaxy as well as in local galaxies can be effectively detected by current and future gravitational experiments, which may hopefully provide a new method to test the strange quark matter hypothesis and probe the magnetic field of compact stars. Star formation is generally considered to be 'universal', meaning that it is statistically the same everywhere (and at all times). We investigate whether it is possible to find a simple rule for the conversion of molecular cores into bound stellar systems, along with the resulting secular decay and dynamical destruction of these systems, which can match the field initial mass functions (IMFs) and multiplicity statistics. We find that extreme cases, in which the core fragmentation is self-similar or has a strong dependence on initial core mass, cannot reproduce the observations of the field. However, a model in which core fragmentation is fairly weakly dependent on core mass has some success, if we include the effects of secular decay on the multiplicity statistics. This model both fits the IMF well and has an overabundance of low-mass binary systems over the field that matches local star-forming regions. We need to resolve the individual stars for binary-fraction determinations of stellar systems. Therefore, it is not possible to obtain the binary fractions for dense or distant stellar systems. We propose a method to determine the binary fraction of a dense or distant stellar system: this method is first to determine the binary-fraction variation for any two adjacent regions and then to add up those binary-fraction variations along the radial direction to obtain the binary fraction for a stellar system. The binary-fraction variation is derived using 10 binary-fraction-sensitive spectral absorption feature indices (SAFIs) and the binary-fraction variation calibrations in terms of these SAFIs. Using this method, we first present the binary-fraction variations for 21 Galactic globular clusters (GCs). By comparison, we find that they agree well with the binary fractions based on the main-sequence fiducial line method from previous studies. This verifies that the above-mentioned method is feasible. Next, we present the binary-fraction variations of 13 Galactic GCs. We give the relationships between the binary fraction and various parameters, and find that the binary fraction is negatively correlated with N HB and N RR, the binary fraction of some studies is not strongly correlated with N BS, and the number of GCs with large binary fraction is greater for the extreme blue horizontal branch population ratio. Finally, if we want to obtain a more accurate binary fraction, we suggest that spectroscopic and photometric observations are conducted at an appropriate area interval for a stellar system. Core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are considered the primary magnetar formation channel, with 15 magnetars associated with supernova remnants (SNRs). A large fraction of these should occur in massive stellar binaries that are disrupted by the explosion, meaning that |$\sim 45~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of magnetars should be nearby high-velocity stars. Here, we conduct a multiwavelength search for unbound stars, magnetar binaries, and SNR shells using public optical (uvgrizy bands), infrared (J, H, K , and Ks bands), and radio (888 MHz, 1.4 GHz, and 3 GHz) catalogues. We use Monte Carlo analyses of candidates to estimate the probability of association with a given magnetar based on their proximity, distance, proper motion, and magnitude. In addition to recovering a proposed magnetar binary, a proposed unbound binary, and 13 of 15 magnetar SNRs, we identify two new candidate unbound systems: an OB star from the Gaia catalogue we associate with SGR J1822.3−1606, and an X-ray pulsar we associate with 3XMM J185246.6 + 003317. Using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation that assumes all magnetars descend from CCSNe, we constrain the fraction of magnetars with unbound companions to |$5\lesssim f_u \lesssim 24~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠ , which disagrees with neutron star population synthesis results. Alternate formation channels are unlikely to wholly account for the lack of unbound binaries as this would require |$31\lesssim f_{nc} \lesssim 66~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of magnetars to descend from such channels. Our results support a high fraction (⁠|$48\lesssim f_m \lesssim 86~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of pre-CCSN mergers, which can amplify fossil magnetic fields to preferentially form magnetars. Binary formation in clusters through triple encounters between three unbound stars, 'three-body' binary formation, is one of the main dynamical formation processes of binary systems in dense environments. In this paper, we use an analytical probabilistic approach to study the process for the equal mass case and calculate a probability distribution for the orbital parameters of three-body-formed binaries, as well as their formation rate. For the first time, we give closed-form analytical expressions to the full orbital parameter distribution, accounting for both energy and angular momentum conservation. This calculation relies on the sensitive dependence of the outcomes of three-body scatterings on the initial conditions: here we compute the rate of three-body binaries from ergodic interactions, which allow for an analytical derivation of the distribution of orbital parameters of the binaries thus created. We find that soft binaries are highly favoured in this process and that these binaries have a superthermal eccentricity distribution, while the few hard three-body binaries have an eccentricity distribution much closer to thermal. Redbacks are millisecond pulsar binaries with low-mass, irradiated companions. These systems have a rich phenomenology that can be used to probe binary evolution models, pulsar wind physics, and the neutron star mass distribution. A number of high-confidence redback candidates have been identified through searches for variable optical and X-ray sources within the localization regions of unidentified but pulsar-like Fermi -LAT gamma-ray sources. However, these candidates remain unconfirmed until pulsations are detected. As part of the TRAPUM project, we searched for radio pulsations from six of these redback candidates with MeerKAT. We discovered three new radio millisecond pulsars, PSRs J0838−2827, J0955−3947, and J2333−5526, confirming their redback nature. PSR J0838−2827 remained undetected for 2 yr after our discovery despite repeated observations, likely due to evaporated material absorbing the radio emission for long periods of time. While, to our knowledge, this system has not undergone a transition to an accreting state, the disappearance, likely caused by extreme eclipses, illustrates the transient nature of spider pulsars and the heavy selection bias in uncovering their radio population. Radio timing enabled the detection of gamma-ray pulsations from all three pulsars, from which we obtained 15-yr timing solutions. All of these sources exhibit complex orbital period variations consistent with gravitational quadrupole moment variations in the companion stars. These timing solutions also constrain the binary mass ratios, allowing us to narrow down the pulsar masses. We find that PSR J2333−5526 may have a neutron star mass in excess of 2 M⊙. With three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations we show that the size of the decretion disc and the structure of the accretion flow on to the neutron star in a Be/X-ray binary strongly depends upon the disc aspect ratio, H / R. We simulate a Be star disc that is coplanar to the orbit of a circularly or moderately eccentric neutron star companion, thereby maximizing the effects of tidal truncation. For low-disc aspect ratio, H / R ≲ 0.1, the disc is efficiently tidally truncated by the neutron star. Most material that escapes the Roche lobe of the Be star is accreted by the neutron star through tidal streams. For larger disc aspect ratio, the outflow rate through the Be star disc is higher, tidal truncation becomes inefficient, the disc fills the Roche lobe and extends to the orbit of the companion. Some material escapes the binary as a gas stream that begins near the L2 point. While the accretion rate on to the neutron star is higher, the fraction of the outflow that is accreted by the neutron star is smaller. Low-density Be star discs are expected to be approximately isothermal, such that H / R increases with radius. Tidal truncation is therefore weaker for larger separation binaries, and lower mass primaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Young α-rich (YAR) stars within the old Galactic thick disc exhibit a dual characteristic of relative youth determined with asteroseismology and abundance enhancement in α elements measured from high-resolution spectroscopy. The youth origin of YAR stars has been proposed to be binary evolution via mass transfer or stellar mergers. If that is the case, YAR stars should spin rapidly and thus be magnetically active, because they are mass and angular momentum gainers. In this study, to seek this binary footprint, we select YAR stars on the main-sequence turn-off or the subgiant branch (MSTO-SGB) from APOGEE DR17, whose ages and projected rotation velocities (v sin  i) can be precisely measured. With APOGEE v sin  i and LAMOST spectra, we find that YAR stars are indeed fast rotators and magnetically active. In addition, we observe low [C/N] ratios and high Gaia RUWE in some YAR stars, suggesting that these MSTO-SGB stars probably have experienced mass transfer from red-giant companions. Our findings underscore that magnetic activity can serve as a valuable tool for probing the binary evolution for other chemically peculiar stars, such as red giants with lithium anomalies and carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars. We analyse a tilt instability of the orbit of an outer planet in a two-planet circumbinary system that we recently reported. The binary is on an eccentric orbit and the inner circumbinary planet is on a circular polar orbit that causes the binary to undergo apsidal precession. The outer circumbinary planet is initially on a circular or eccentric orbit that is coplanar with respect to the binary. We apply a Hamiltonian in quadrupole order of the binary potential to show that the tilt instability is the result of a secular resonance in which the apsidal precession rate of the binary matches the nodal precession rate of the outer planet. A resonance is possible because the polar inner planet causes the apsidal precession of the binary to be retrograde. The outer planet periodically undergoes large tilt oscillations for which we analytically determine the initial evolution and maximum inclination. Following a typically relatively short adjustment phase, the tilt grows exponentially in time at a characteristic rate that is of order the absolute value of the binary apsidal precession rate. The analytic results agree well with numerical simulations. This instability is analogous to the Kozai–Lidov instability, but applied to a circumbinary object. The instability fails to operate if the binary mass ratio is too extreme. Double neutron star (DNS) systems offer excellent opportunities to test gravity theories. We report the timing results of PSR J1901+0658, the first pulsar discovered in the FAST Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) Survey. Based on timing observations by FAST over 5 yr, we obtain the phase-coherent timing solution and derive the precise measurements of its position, spin parameters, orbital parameters, and dispersion measure. It has a period of 75.7 ms, a period derivative of 2.169(6) × 10−19 s s−1, and a characteristic age of 5.5 Gyr. This pulsar is in an orbit with a period of 14.45 d and an eccentricity of 0.366. One post-Keplerian parameter, periastron advance, has been well-measured as being 0.00531(9) deg yr−1, from which the total mass of this system is derived to be 2.79(7) M⊙. The pulsar has the mass upper limit of 1.68 M⊙, so the lower limit for the companion mass is 1.11 M⊙. Because PSR J1901+0658 is a partially recycled pulsar in an eccentric binary orbit with such a large companion mass, it should be in a DNS system according to the evolution history of the binary system. Using MeerKAT , we have discovered three new millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the bulge globular cluster M62: M62H, M62I, and M62J. All three are in binary systems, which means all ten known pulsars in the cluster are in binaries. M62H has a planetary-mass companion with a median mass M c, med ∼ 3 MJ and a mean density of ρ ∼ 11 g cm−3. M62I has an orbital period of 0.51 d and a M c, med ∼ 0.15 M⊙. Neither of these low-mass systems exhibit eclipses. M62J has only been detected in the two Ultra High Frequency band (816 MHz) observations with a flux density S 816 = 0.08 mJy. The non-detection in the L-band (1284 MHz) indicates it has a relatively steep spectrum (β < −3.1). We also present 23-yr-long timing solutions obtained using data from the Parkes 'Murriyang', Effelsberg , and MeerKAT telescopes for the six previously known pulsars. For all these pulsars, we measured the second spin-period derivatives and the rate of change of orbital period caused by the gravitational field of the cluster, and their proper motions. From these measurements, we conclude that the pulsars' maximum accelerations are consistent with the maximum cluster acceleration assuming a core-collapsed mass distribution. Studies of the eclipses of the redback M62B and the black widow M62E at four and two different frequency bands, respectively, reveal a frequency dependence with longer and asymmetric eclipses at lower frequencies. The presence of only binary MSPs in this cluster challenges models which suggest that the MSP population of core-collapsed clusters should be dominated by isolated MSPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a gaseous medium, dynamical friction (DF) reaches a maximum when the orbital speed of a (point-like) perturber moving on a circular orbit is close to the sound speed. Therefore, in a quasi-steady state, eccentric orbits of perturbers approaching the sound barrier (from below) should rapidly circularize as they experience the strongest drag at pericentre passage. To investigate this effect, we extend the solution for circular DF in a uniform gaseous medium to eccentric Keplerian orbits. We derive an approximation to the steady-state DF force, which is valid for eccentricities as high as e  = 0.9 in a limited range of Mach number around the transition to supersonic regime. We validate our analytical result with 3D simulations of the gas density response. Although gaseous DF generally dissipates orbital energy, we find that it can be directed along the motion of the perturber near pericentre passage when the eccentricity is e ≳ 0.9. We apply our results to compute the long-time evolution of the orbital parameters. Most trajectories tend to circularize as the perturber moves into the supersonic regime. However, orbits with eccentricities e ≳ 0.8 below the sound barrier experience a slight increase in eccentricity as they loose orbital energy. Super-Eddington accretion of neutron stars (NSs) has been suggested both observationally and theoretically. In this paper, we propose that NSs in close-orbit binary systems with companions of helium (He) stars, most of which systems form after the common-envelope phase, could experience super-Eddington stable Case BB/BC mass transfer (MT), and can sometimes undergo accretion-induced collapse (AIC), resulting in the formation of lower mass-gap black holes (mgBHs). Our detailed binary evolution simulations reveal that AIC events tend to happen if the primary NSs have an initial mass |${\gtrsim} 1.7\, {\rm M}_\odot$| with a critical accretion rate of ≳300 times the Eddington limit. These mgBHs would have a mass nearly equal to or slightly higher than the NS maximum mass. The remnant mgBH–NS binaries after the core collapses of He stars are potential progenitors of gravitational-wave (GW) sources. Multimessenger observations between GW and kilonova signals from a population of high-mass binary NS and mgBH–NS mergers formed through super-Eddington stable MT are helpful in constraining the maximum mass and equation of state of NSs. Stellar binaries are ubiquitous in the galaxy and a laboratory for astrophysical effects. We use TESS to study photometric modulations in the light curves of 162 unequal mass eclipsing binaries from the EBLM (Eclipsing Binary Low Mass) survey, comprising F/G/K primaries and M-dwarf secondaries. We detect modulations on 81 eclipsing binaries. We catalogue the rotation rates of the primary star in 69 binaries and discover 17 ellipsoidal variables. In a large portion (at least |$\sim 51~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of our sample, we detect photometric modulations consistent with two overdensities of spots on the primary star that are roughly 180° apart. We show that these so-called active longitudes are preferentially at the sub- and antistellar points on the primary star. The study of the orbital period variation of short-period binary systems has been important to understand several physical phenomena, such as the emission of gravitational waves, angular momentum loss via magnetic braking, matter transfer between the components, apsidal motion, quadrupole moment variation, and presence of circumbinary bodies. With the advent of large space missions, e.g. Kepler and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), an enormous amount of high-precision photometric data with temporal coverage from years to decades has become available. Thus, in this work, we propose to study the orbital period variation of a sample of 253 binary that was observed by both Kepler and TESS and therefore with a temporal coverage of more than 10 yr. The main goal of this paper is the search and characterization of third bodies. Based on the periodicity analysis of the observed minus calculated (O − C) diagram of the sample, 75 of them showed periodic variation and therefore were classified as binary systems with third-body candidates, while the remaining 178 did not show periodic variations. This result is a two-fold increase in tertiary candidates around binary systems compared to the study carried out with only Kepler data. Although our estimated rate of third-body candidates (∼30 per cent) is higher than that obtained only with Kepler data (∼20 per cent), it should be taken as a lower limit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neutron star–white dwarf (NSWD) binaries are one of the most abundant sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the Milky Way. These GW sources are the evolutionary products of primordial binaries that experienced many processes of binary interaction. We employ a binary population synthesis method to investigate the properties of Galactic NSWD binaries detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). In this paper, only the NSWD systems with a COWD or ONeWD component are included. We consider various models related to mass-transfer efficiencies during primordial binary evolution, supernova explosion mechanisms at NS formation, common envelope ejection efficiencies, and critical WD masses that determine the stability of mass transfer between WDs and NSs. Based on our calculations, we estimate that tens to hundreds of LISA NSWD binaries exist in the Milky Way. We find that the detection of LISA NSWD binaries is able to provide profound insights into mass-transfer efficiencies during the evolution of primordial binaries and critical WD masses during mass transfer from a WD to an NS. Outward migration of massive binary stars or black holes in their circumbinary disc is often observed in simulations and it is key to the formation of wide black hole binaries. Using numerical simulations of Population III (Pop III) star formation, we study the angular momentum of Pop III binaries and the torques between stars and gas discs to understand the origin of outward migration and high ellipticity. The outward migration of protostars is produced by gravitational torques exerted on them by their circumstellar minidiscs. The minidiscs, on the other hand, migrate outward mainly by gaining angular momentum by accreting gas from the circumbinary disc. The angular momentum transfer is most efficient for rapidly accreting equal-mass binaries, and weaker when the secondary mass is small or the massive companion evaporates the gas disc via radiative feedback. We conclude that outward migration and the formation of wide equal-mass massive binaries is common in metal-free/metal-poor star formation, mainly driven by their large accretion rates. We expect that the lower gas temperature and accretion rates in metal-enriched circumstellar discs would lead more often to inward migration and closer binary separations. We also observe inward migration for smaller mass Pop III protostars/fragments, leading to the rapid merging of sink particles and likely the formation of close binary black holes that, however, reach separations below the resolution of our simulations. We discuss the implications that Pop III separations and ellipticity may have on the interpretation that gravitational wave signals from merging intermediate-mass black holes come from Pop III remnants. We infer the dynamical masses of stars across the Hertzsprung–Russell (H–R) diagram using wide binaries from the Gaia survey. Gaia 's high-precision astrometry measures the wide binaries' orbital motion, which contains the mass information. Using wide binaries as the training sample, we measure the mass of stars across the 2D H–R diagram using the combination of statistical inference and neural networks. Our results provide the dynamical mass measurements for main-sequence stars from 0.1 to 2 M⊙, unresolved binaries, and unresolved triples on the main sequence, and the mean masses of giants and white dwarfs. Two regions in the H–R diagram show interesting behaviours in mass, where one of them is pre-main-sequence stars, and the other one may be related to close compact object companions like M dwarf-white dwarf binaries. These mass measurements depend solely on Newtonian dynamics with minimal assumptions on eccentricities, providing independent constraints on stellar evolutionary models, and the occurrence rate of compact objects. A large number of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers are expected to be detected by gravitational wave (GW) detectors and the electromagnetic (EM) counterparts (e.g. kilonovae) of a fraction of these mergers may be detected in multibands by large area survey telescopes. For a given number of BNS mergers detected by their GW signals, the expected numbers of their EM counterparts that can be detected by a survey with given selection criteria depend on the kilonova properties, including the anisotropy. In this paper, we investigate whether the anisotropy of kilonova radiation and the kilonova model can be constrained statistically by the counting method, i.e. using the numbers of BNS mergers detected via GW and multiband EM signals. Adopting simple models for the BNS mergers, afterglows, and a simple two (blue and red)-component model for kilonovae, we generate mock samples for GW detected BNS mergers, their associated kilonovae, and afterglows detected in multibands. By assuming some criteria for searching the EM counterparts, we simulate the observations of these EM counterparts and obtain the EM observed samples in different bands. With the numbers of BNS mergers detected by GW detectors and EM survey telescopes in different bands, we show that the anisotropy of kilonova radiation and the kilonova model can be well constrained by using the Bayesian analysis. Our results suggest that the anisotropy of kilonova radiation may be demographically and globally constrained by simply using the detection numbers of BNS mergers by GW detectors and EM survey telescopes in multibands.
