BACKGROUND: Dark-field radiography imaging exploits the wave character of x-rays to measure small-angle scattering on material interfaces, providing structural information with low radiation exposure. We explored the potential of dark-field imaging of bone microstructure to improve the assessment of bone strength in osteoporosis. METHODS: We prospectively examined 14 osteoporotic/osteopenic and 21 non-osteoporotic/osteopenic human cadaveric vertebrae (L2-L4) with a clinical dark-field radiography system, micro-computed tomography (CT), and spectral CT. Dark-field images were obtained in both vertical and horizontal sample positions. Bone microstructural parameters (trabecular number, Tb.N; trabecular thickness, Tb.Th; bone volume fraction, BV/TV; degree of anisotropy, DA) were measured using standard ex vivo micro-CT, while hydroxyapatite density was measured using spectral CT. INTRODUCTION: Adjunctive suture augmentation of patellar plate fixation has yet to be investigated. Our biomechanical study sought to evaluate whether suture augmentation improves dorsal patellar locking plate fixation. Our hypothesis was that suture augmentation would improve fixation of this construct. METHODS: A transverse patella fracture in six matched cadaveric pairs was stabilized using a patellar locking plate with or without suture augmentation. Specimens were tested at 60° knee flexion with load placed through quadriceps. Cyclic loading followed by load to failure was done. Stiffness, deformation at peak, and nonrecoverable deformation were calculated. RESULTS: During cyclic loading, suture augmentation demonstrated a higher average stiffness throughout all loads. At the final cycle, deformation was markedly higher without suture augmentation. Average load to failure was higher with suture augmentation. Maximum load to failure occurred at 2500 N in both groups. CONCLUSION: Suture augmentation in a transverse patellar fracture model improved dorsal plate fixation, leading to less fracture displacement at the final load. Although suture augmentation demonstrated higher stiffness and lower deformation, these trends were not statistically significant. In both groups, plate fixation sustained very high loads, which reflects the fixation strength of the dorsal locking plate and screw construct in this fracture model.

BackgroundThe appropriate amount of cementation at the time of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty with significant proximal bone loss or resection is unknown. Extensive cementation of a humeral prosthesis makes eventual revision arthroplasty more challenging, increasing the risk of periprosthetic fracture. We analyzed the degree of subsidence and torque tolerance of humeral components undergoing standard cementation technique vs. our reduced polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) protocol. Reduced cementation may provide sufficient biomechanical stability to resist physiologically relevant loads, while still permitting a clinically attainable torque for debonding the prosthesis.MethodsA total of 12 cadaveric humeri (6 matched pairs) underwent resection of 5 cm of bone distal to the greater tuberosity. Each pair of humeri underwent standard humeral arthroplasty preparation followed by either cementation using a 1.5-cm PMMA sphere at a location 3 cm inferior to the porous coating or standard full stem cementation. A 6-degree-of-freedom robot was used to perform all testing. Each humeral sample underwent 200 cycles of abduction, adduction, and forward elevation while being subjected to a physiologic compression force. Next, the samples were fixed in place and subjected to an increasing torque until implant-cement separation or failure occurred. Paired t tests were used to compare mean implant subsidence vs. a predetermined 5-mm threshold, as well as removal torque in matched samples.ResultsFully and partially cemented implants subsided 0.49 mm (95% CI 0.23-0.76 mm) and 1.85 mm (95% CI 0.41-3.29 mm), respectively, which were significantly less than the predetermined 5-mm threshold (P

BackgroundThe calcaneal enthesis, an osseous footprint where the Achilles tendon seamlessly integrates with the bone, represents a complex interface crucial for effective force transmission. Bone adapts to mechanical stress and remodels based on the applied internal and external forces. This study explores the relationship between the elasticity of the Achilles tendon enthesis and the bone microstructure in the calcaneal crescent.MethodsIn total, 19 calcaneal-enthesis sections, harvested from 10 fresh-frozen human cadaveric foot-ankle specimens (73.8 ± 6.0 years old, seven female), were used in this study. Indentation tests were performed at the enthesis region, and Hayes' elastic modulus was calculated for each specimen. Micro-CT scanning was performed at 50-micron voxel size to assess trabecular bone microstructure within six regions of interest (ROIs) and the cortical bone thickness along the calcaneal crescent.ResultsSignificant Spearman correlations were observed between the enthesis elastic modulus and trabecular bone thickness in the distal entheseal (ROI 3) and proximal plantar (ROI 4) regions (R = 0.786 and 0.518, respectively).ConclusionThis study highlights the potential impacts of Achilles tendon enthesis on calcaneal bone microstructure, which was pronounced in the distal calcaneal enthesis, suggesting regional differences in load transfer mechanism that require further investigation.

Background: Dry needling (DN) has emerged as a popular therapeutic intervention for managing musculoskeletal pain. While major adverse events are generally rare, those that have been reported in vulnerable areas such as the spine and thorax can be serious and warrant further investigation regarding safe techniques in and around these areas. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to reproduce the methods employed by Williams et al. but with an inferior-medial multifidus DN technique to determine if a dry needle can penetrate the ligamentum flavum (LF) and breach the spinal canal at the thoracolumbar junction. Study Design: Descriptive Cadaveric study. Methods: The procedure was performed on a cadaver in the prone position. The needle was advanced under ultrasound guidance to determine if a 0.30 x 40 mm dry needle inserted lateral to the spinous process of T12 and directed inferior-medially could penetrate the LF and enter the spinal canal. Results: A 0.30 x 40 mm dry needle inserted 1.9 cm lateral to the spinous process of T12 was able to traverse the space between the vertebral laminae of T12 and L1, penetrate the LF, and enter the spinal canal with an inferior-medial needle angulation of 33-degrees medial and 18-degrees inferior. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of a dry needle entering the spinal canal at the thoracolumbar junction using an inferior-medial technique. These findings support the potential role of ultrasound guidance in the training and clinical practice of DN, especially in regions where safety issues have been documented. The high incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in evacuees has been recognized since the 2004 Niigata-Chuetsu Earthquake in Japan. We hypothesized that the number and location of communicating branches of the soleal veins might influence thrombus development and that the median septum of the soleus muscle influences the venous network of the soleal veins. This study aimed to investigate how the network of soleal veins varies with the shape and thickness of the median septum and to elucidate factors predisposing soleal veins to DVT. The lower legs of 30 sides from 15 formalin-preserved cadavers were observed. The central soleal vein, the predilection site for thrombus among the six veins within the soleus muscle, divides into three branches: medial, central, and lateral. The soleus muscle has a unique architecture with converging muscle fibers on the anterior surface of the median septum. We examined the positional relationship between the central soleal vein and the median septum. The median septum morphology was either straight (14 sides, 46.7%) or curved (16 sides, 53.3%). The number of communicating branches was significantly higher in the curved type. The curved type also had a communicating vein penetrating the median septum, with the central branch passing deeper than in the straight type. The median septum could restrict the enlargement of communicating branches, causing thrombosis through disturbance of venous blood flow. Future research will clarify the median septum's influence on the soleal vein, potentially identifying soleus muscles at high risk of developing DVT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability is a common post-traumatic complication, often leading to chronic pain and dysfunction. Current reconstructive techniques, such as the single suture button construct, offer suboptimal stabilization in certain motions. This study aimed to evaluate whether a double suture button construct provides greater stability than the single construct in a cadaver model of DRUJ instability. We hypothesized that the double suture button construct would more effectively minimize dorsal translation of the radius relative to the ulna. Methods: We used nine freshly frozen human cadaver upper extremities, destabilized the DRUJ, and then reconstructed the joint using three different suture button constructs: single transverse, double (transverse + oblique), and single oblique. The specimens were secured in a custom-designed testing apparatus to measure dorsal translation of the radius. The study proceeded in five stages: stable DRUJ, unstable DRUJ, and reconstruction using a single transverse, double (transverse + oblique), and single oblique suture button construct. Dorsal translation was measured at neutral, 45° pronation, and 45° supination. Statistical comparisons of mean values were conducted for each stage. Results: Reconstruction with the transverse, transverse plus oblique, and oblique suture button constructs resulted in statistically significant reductions in dorsal translation compared to the unstable DRUJ (p < 0.001 for all). The double-suture button construct significantly minimized dorsal translation in all positions, restoring stability comparable to a stable DRUJ: neutral (p = 1.000), pronation (p = 0.963), and supination (p = 1.000). In contrast, single constructs failed to fully restore stability in pronation and supination. Conclusion: The double suture button construct provides significantly greater stabilization of the DRUJ compared to the single construct. These findings suggest that the double construct could be a more effective option for treating DRUJ instability, particularly in restoring normal joint function during various motions. Methods: This cadaveric study (a total of 6 soft-embalmed cadavers and bilateral dissections, i.e. 12 specimens) intended to ascertain the location of SCN within the layers of the IL-DCF. We hypothesized that ultrasonography identification of SCN within the IL-DCF and needle tip positioned between the layers of IL-DCF provide an alternative site for the blockade of the SCN. Results: After dissection, we described a compact double-layered IL-DCF hosting the SCNs and a specific topographic arrangement at the C4 root with SCN lateral and C4 branches of the phrenic nerve medial to the C4. Conclusion: We recommend another alternative site for the SCN block at a site in the compact double layer of IL-DCF. Background: The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the available literature on the biomechanical characteristics of the acromioclavicular (AC) joint to identify trends in translational parameters and contributions of the various ligamentous structures supporting the joint. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in the Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases until October 2023 to identify articles reporting on the biomechanical characteristics of the AC joint. Non cadaveric or projects involving reconstruction were excluded. Consistent parameters evaluated were anterior, posterior, superior, and inferior translation. The data were extracted from the included articles and summarized. Results: 11 biomechanical papers were reviewed from six different countries — United States (n = 6), France (n = 1), Austria (n = 1), Thailand (n = 1), United Kingdom (n = 1), and Japan (n = 1). The total number of specimens included across the reviewed papers was 141. All 11 papers reported the data on an intact model (coracoclavicular and AC ligaments intact). Seven papers assessed the translational results of the AC sectioned condition, finding a greater increase in anterior-posterior (AP) laxity relative to SI. 3 papers evaluated coracoclavicular ligament sectioning, finding increased superior-inferior laxity relative to AP. Only one study involved ligament sectioning isolating the anterior-inferior bundle of the AC joint. Conclusion: This review highlights the key AP and superior-inferior constraints of both the intact and ligament sectioned AC joint. The inconsistency of AC joint testing parameters and the lack of thorough translation studies indicate a necessity for increased attention in the overall assessment of shoulder stability to close the gap in the foundational biomechanical research.

Background This study aimed to elucidate the potential usefulness of the medial rectus muscle of cadavers for research on satellite cells. Methods Twenty-four medial rectus muscles were obtained from 12 cadavers. The control group included six medial rectus muscles from three live adults without brain activity. The muscle fiber diameter and distribution of satellite cells were measured and compared. Immunohistochemistry for myosin heavy chain and the transcription factor PAX7 was performed, and the distributions of myocytes and satellite cells were evaluated. Results The average muscle fiber diameter was 142.18±36.49 μm in the cadaver group and 149.34±15.26 μm in the control group, and there was no significant difference between the two groups (p=0.38). Abstract Background Regional anaesthesia education, especially for ocular procedures, necessitates reliable surgical training models. While cadaveric models offer anatomical fidelity, conventional embalming methods may compromise tissue integrity. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of Thiel cadavers for training in sub-Tenon’s blocks by evaluating ocular tissues and measuring insertion forces. Methods Experimental design, using twenty eyes from ten Thiel cadaver heads. These cadavers were specifically prepared to test the administration of sub-Tenon’s blocks. The research was conducted in a controlled laboratory setting appropriate for handling cadaveric materials and conducting precise measurements. Each cadaver eye underwent an initial ultrasound examination, and its axial length was noted. An intravitreal injection of heptastarch solution followed, to re-establish the eye’s sphericity. After this volume injection, the axial length and intraocular pressure were measured again. Mock sub-Tenon’s blocks were administered in 2 separate quadrants of the eye, with insertion forces measured using a pressure gauge. These were compared to a data set of insertion forces measured in a series of isolated pig’s eyes on which STBs had been performed. Main outcome measurements were macroscopic assessment of the ocular tissue layers and the insertion forces required for the sub-Tenon’s blocks. In a second set of 10 Thiel cadaver heads, 5 ml of sodium chloride were injected as sub-Tenon’s blocks and the emergence of a periocular “T-sign” ascertained and measured by ultrasound. Results Four of twenty eyes (20%) retained near-natural sphericity, with the remaining requiring volume injection to approximate physiological shape and pressure. The conjunctiva and Tenon’s layer were intact, and correct cannula placement was achieved in all cases. In 16 of 20 eyes where T-signs could be measured, the median thickness of the T-sign amounted to 2.72 mm (range 1.34 mm–5.28 mm). The average maximum cannula insertion force was 2.92 Newtons. Insertion forces in intact Thiel cadaver heads were consistently higher than in isolated pig’s eyes (3.6 N vs 2.0 N). Conclusion These findings suggest that Thiel cadavers are a promising model for training in sub-Tenon’sblocks, despite the challenge of often desiccated and involuted eyes.

Objective: Intra-articular screw penetration is a probable complication of coronoid fracture fixation. Thepresent study aimed to determine the best radiography technique for visualizing the proximal radioulnar joint(PRUJ) space. Moreover, it aimed to determine the safe angle and length of the screw to avoid PRUJ penetrationduring coronoid fracture fixation.Methods: The Mimics software was used to construct a three-dimensional model of a healthy man’s forearmfrom a computer tomography scan. It was analyzed using the Solidworks software to determine the X-ray anglethat clearly showed the PRUJ space to detect penetration of screws from the coronoid process into the PRUJand determine the maximum screw angle and length that could be used without intra-articular penetration. Toverify these findings, a cadaveric study combined with radiographs was conducted.Results: To visualize PRUJ space, the optimal X-ray angle was 13º lateral to the perpendicular line when theforearm was positioned at full supination. If the coronoid process was segmented into zones 1 (closest to theradioulnar joint) to 4 (farthest from the joint), the screw could only be inserted at a right angle in zone 1. In zones2, 3, and 4, inclination angles less than 15, 35, and 60 would prevent intra-articular penetration, respectively.Conclusions: The X-rays could visualize the PRUJ space with an anteroposterior radiograph at an angle of13º ulnar deviation from the perpendicular plane. During coronoid process fracture fixation, shorter screwswith less lateral inclination were safer when inserting screws in the zones of the coronoid process adjacent tothe PRUJ.

Background Formaldehyde a commonly used embalming fluid for the preservation of cadavers, produces numerous short and long-term side effects on the students and staff working with it. Indoor plants have been shown to reduce atmospheric formaldehyde levels. The purpose of the study was to compare the efficacy of indoor plants in reducing formaldehyde levels in ambient air to levels deemed safe by WHO standards Methods The study was conducted in the storage room of the Anatomical dissection hall. 7 potted plants of one variety were kept in the storage room for 14 days and the Formaldehyde reading was measured using a VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) monitor. Then the same was done with no plant. This cycle was repeated 2 more times, with two different plant species. The three spieces of plants used for this study were as follows: Dracaena trifasciata, Epipremnum aureum, Spathiphyllum. Results The results were analysed and compared and it was determined that the effect of having a plant present versus having no plant present on the Formaldehyde concentration in the air was inconclusive as Dracaena trifasciata failed to reject the null hypothesis altogether (p-value>0.05), while Epipremnum aureum and Spathiphyllum rejected the null hypothesis (p-value Conclusion The efficacy of indoor plants in reducing formaldehyde levels in ambient air needs to be further explored and validated since all the prior studies conducted were in controlled environment and should be done in a real time scenario for its practical and beneficial uses.

The 7th cervical vertebra (C7) is described as having the most prominent spinous process (SP) and is characterized as the "vertebra prominens" (VP) of the cervical spine in anatomy textbooks. The VP is an important anatomical landmark of the neck for clinical examination and therapeutic intervention. The present study identifies the level of the most prominent SP of the cervical and uppermost thoracic vertebrae in a cadaveric cohort. Thirty-nine (23 female and 16 male) cadavers of a mean age of 77.5 years were investigated in a prone position and a certain cervical kyphotic bending. The most prominent SP, at the base of the neck, was palpated and marked with a wedging nail into the SP of the vertebra. The cervical region was dissected, and a blind investigator examined whether the nail was placed into the SP of C7 or the SP of another upper or lower vertebra. In 19 out of 39 cadavers (48.7%), the C7 was identified as the VP (typical anatomy), followed by the C6 (in 14 cadavers, 35.9%), C5 (in 4 cadavers, 10.3%). In 2 cadavers (5.1%) the first thoracic vertebra was identified as having the most prominent SP. Although C7 is described as the VP, in the present study the SP of C7 was the most prominent in less than 50%. The high variable projection level of the most prominent SP of the cervical vertebra holds great clinical significance for spine examination, neck surgery, and spinal anesthesia. Objective: Complete resection is the curative treatment choice for recurrent gynecological malignancies. Laterally extended endopelvic resection (LEER) is an effective surgical salvage therapy for lateral recurrence. However, when a recurrent tumor occupies the ischial spine and sacrum, LEER is not indicated, and surgical salvage therapy is abandoned. Theoretically, complete resection of such a tumor is possible by additional pelvic bone resection along with the standard LEER. Nevertheless, owing to the anatomical complexities of the beyond-LEER procedure, 2 major issues should be solved: sciatic nerve injury and tumor disruption during pelvic bone amputation. To overcome these technical challenges, we applied a multidirectional beyond-LEER approach, a novel salvage surgical procedure, with an aim of demonstrating its technical feasibility. Methods: We created a simulation model of a laterally recurrent tumor that occupied the right ischial spine and sacrum in a Thiel-embalmed cadaver. Results: Multidirectional approaches, including laparoscopic, perineal, and dorsal phases, were safely applied. We laparoscopically marked the L4-L5-S1 complex and S2 nerve with different colored tapes, and by pulling them out into a dorsal surgical field, the sciatic nerve was safely preserved. The dissection lines of the multidirectional approaches were aligned using tapes as landmarks, and complete tumor clearance without tumor disruption was accomplished. By following the cadaveric training, the first laparoscopic-assisted beyond- LEER procedure was successfully performed in a patient with recurrent ovarian cancer. Conclusion: Using a Thiel-embalmed cadaver, we demonstrated the technical feasibility of a sciatic nerve-preserved beyond-LEER procedure, which was successfully performed in a patient with recurrent ovarian cancer. Background: Regional anaesthesia education, especially for ocular procedures, necessitates reliable surgical training models. While cadaveric models offer anatomical fidelity, conventional embalming methods may compromise tissue integrity. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of Thiel cadavers for training in sub-Tenon's blocks by evaluating ocular tissues and measuring insertion forces. Methods: Experimental design, using twenty eyes from ten Thiel cadaver heads. These cadavers were specifically prepared to test the administration of sub-Tenon's blocks. The research was conducted in a controlled laboratory setting appropriate for handling cadaveric materials and conducting precise measurements. Each cadaver eye underwent an initial ultrasound examination, and its axial length was noted. An intravitreal injection of heptastarch solution followed, to re-establish the eye's sphericity. After this volume injection, the axial length and intraocular pressure were measured again. Mock sub-Tenon's blocks were administered in 2 separate quadrants of the eye, with insertion forces measured using a pressure gauge. These were compared to a data set of insertion forces measured in a series of isolated pig's eyes on which STBs had been performed. Main outcome measurements were macroscopic assessment of the ocular tissue layers and the insertion forces required for the sub-Tenon's blocks. In a second set of 10 Thiel cadaver heads, 5 ml of sodium chloride were injected as sub-Tenon's blocks and the emergence of a periocular "T-sign" ascertained and measured by ultrasound. Results: Four of twenty eyes (20%) retained near-natural sphericity, with the remaining requiring volume injection to approximate physiological shape and pressure. The conjunctiva and Tenon's layer were intact, and correct cannula placement was achieved in all cases. In 16 of 20 eyes where T-signs could be measured, the median thickness of the T-sign amounted to 2.72 mm (range 1.34 mm–5.28 mm). The average maximum cannula insertion force was 2.92 Newtons. Insertion forces in intact Thiel cadaver heads were consistently higher than in isolated pig's eyes (3.6 N vs 2.0 N). Conclusion: These findings suggest that Thiel cadavers are a promising model for training in sub-Tenon'sblocks, despite the challenge of often desiccated and involuted eyes. Mechanical asphyxiation has been a common method used to commit homicide, including femicide, throughout history. A recent report by the United Nations has shed light on the issue of misidentification and concealment of gender-related killings, which makes it difficult to effectively fight against it. Forensic pathologists are frequently asked to examine cases involving suspected asphyxia to determine whether other persons have been involved. Therefore, medicolegal experts must look for signs of occlusion of the oral/nasal orifices, compression of the neck, or specific signs such as the "facie sympathique". There are situations where the physical signs are not distinctive enough to diagnose asphyxia, especially in cases where the individual has limited ability to resist external compression. In such cases, judicial autopsies should include an anatomical dissection of the neck structures through a layer-by-layer progression. It is important to search for the Amussat's sign, e.g., as part of a Forensic Clinical Anatomy approach. Additionally, individual anatomical variations, age or artefactual modifications, must be considered for the correct interpretation of findings. Microscopic examinations could aid in the diagnosis by providing additional findings, and several attempts have been made to identify unique markers of asphyxia through various laboratory techniques such as biochemistry, radiology and miRNA studies. However, no single finding or method has been identified as definitive. In the future, biomedical-legal sciences will have to rely on scientific research and the retrospective case series to provide a scientific framework on which to base their hypothesis, giving weight to evidence in the trial. Introduction: Cadaver dissection in anatomy, a cornerstone of medical school education, has been replaced by digital technologies. This study aimed to determine the learning outcomes nursing students could achieve through cadaveric dissection practice (CDP). Methods: This scoping review was carried out using the checklist outlined in the Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Extension for Scoping Reviews through August 2023. Articles from PubMed, ERIC, and CINAL were included. This scoping review included studies that focused on the learning effects of nursing students' experiences with cadaver dissection, written in English, and covered all study types. Results: The cadaveric dissection exercise resulted in a strong interest in the human body and a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology. It also allows for creating an image of care for the patient before death, the meaning of existence after death, acceptance that death is not frightening, and an understanding of the afterlife. Furthermore, the cadaveric dissection exercise has been reported to improve confidence in patient care, lead to a better understanding of what other professions practice, and involve the development of professional identity. Conclusions: Studies on the learning effects of CDP have differed in subject matter and educational methodologies. In the future, while determining how the experience of CDP is related to nursing practice of nursing students and graduates, we must explore effective CDP and develop educational methodologies that can achieve similar learning effects. Background: Approximately 40% of chronic low back pain patients have a discogenic origin. In relation to intervertebral disc injuries, most of them are in the posterior and lateral zone of the disc, involving the anterior lumbar roots and the spinal cord. Objective: The objective was to analyze and describe the accuracy and safety of a new ultrasound-guided approach to target the posterolateral part of the intervertebral lumbar discs in cadaveric specimens. Methods: A cross-anatomical study on sixty cadaver intervertebral lumbar discs was performed. A needle was introduced in the posterolateral part of the discs using ultrasound guidance. A transducer was placed in the anterior abdomen to visualize the discs in cross-section as well. A dissection of the specimen was performed to visualize the final position of the needle tip and its distance from the main lumbar structures. The angulation, length, and distance of the needle from the vertebral spine, the relevant ultrasound anatomical references, and the accuracy of the procedure were evaluated. Results: The needle tip reached the posterolateral part of the discs in 93.3% of the attempts. The mean length of the needle inserted was 79 ± 15 mm, the angulation 129 ± 20.2°, the distance from the spinous process was 77 ± 19 mm, and the distance of the needle to the nerve roots was 2.0 ± 1.2 mm. No statistically significant differences between genders were found. Conclusions: An ultrasound-guided technique can be an accurate and safe technique to perform invasive procedures on the posterolateral part of the intervertebral lumbar discs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The superior cerebellar artery (SCA) is a vessel anterior to the brainstem, usually originating from the basilar artery (BA). In this case, a different course of left SCA in a 74-year-old male cadaver was reported. The origin of the SCA was found to be a unilateral double root at the left side on the anterior surface of the pons. The distances of the starting points of roots to the bifurcation of BA were 31.09 mm on the right side, on the left side the rostral root was 33.84 mm and the caudal root was 30.95 mm. The diameter of the right SCA was 2.37 mm, the left rostral root was 2.05 mm and the caudal root was 1.24 mm. Knowing the course of SCA, and especially morphological variations, will be helpful for the clinical branches in preventing complications during surgical operations, evaluating angiographic examinations, and diagnosing and treating neurovascular diseases. The axillary artery is a continuation of the subclavian artery and transitions into the brachial artery. Variations in the axillary artery are not uncommon. During the upper-limb dissection of a 95-year-old Korean female cadaver, assorted anatomical variations of the axillary artery branches were identified. On the right side, no branches emerged from the first part of the axillary artery. The thoracoacromial artery (excluding the pectoral branch) and the common subscapular trunk arose from the second part, with the common subscapular trunk giving origins to the pectoral branch, lateral thoracic artery, and subscapular artery. The subscapular artery is divided into the thoracodorsal artery, circumflex scapular artery, and accessory posterior circumflex humeral artery. Additionally, the superior thoracic artery arose from the lateral thoracic artery. The third part of the axillary artery gave rise to the anterior and posterior circumflex humeral arteries, accessory acromial branch, and accessory thoracodorsal artery. On the left side, the thoracoacromial artery (excluding the pectoral branch) and the superior thoracic artery arose from the first part. The common subscapular trunk arose from the second part, which included the pectoral branch, lateral thoracic artery, and subscapular artery. The subscapular artery is divided into the thoracodorsal artery, circumflex scapular artery, accessory posterior circumflex humeral artery, and accessory lateral thoracic artery. The third part gave rise to the anterior and posterior circumflex humeral arteries and the accessory acromial branch. This study presents variations of the axillary artery, emphasizing their rarity, considering their embryologic basis, and highlighting their importance not only for educational purposes but also surgical and radiological applications. Objective: To confirm the usefulness of the extradural anterior clinoidectomy during the clipping of a low riding posterior communicating artery (PCoA) aneurysm through cadaver dissection. Methods: Anatomic measurements of 12 adult cadaveric heads (24 sides total) were performed to compare the microsurgical exposure of the PCoA and internal carotid artery (ICA) before and after clinoidectomy. A standard pterional craniotomy and transsylvian approach were performed in all cadavers. The distance from the ICA bifurcation to the origin of PCoA (D1), pre-anterior clinoidectomy distance from the ICA bifurcation to tentorium (D2), post-anterior clinoidectomy distance from the ICA bifurcation to tentorium (D3), pre-anterior clinoidectomy distance from the tentorium to the origin of PCoA (D4) and post-anterior clinoidectomy distance from the tentorium to the origin of PCoA (D5) and the distance of the ICA obtained after anterior clinoidectomy (D6) were measured. We measured the precise thickness of the blade for the Yasargil clip with a digital precision ruler to confirm the usefulness of the extradural anterior clinoidectomy. Results: Twenty-four sites were dissected from 12 cadavers. The age of the cadavers was 79.83±6.25 years. The number of males was the same as the females. The space from the proximal origin of the PCoA to the preclinoid-tentorium (D4) was 1.45±1.08 mm (max, 4.01; min, 0.56). After the clinoidectomy, the space from the proximal origin of the PCoA to the postclinoid-tentorium (D5) was 3.612±1.15 mm (max, 6.14; min, 1.83). The length (D6) of the exposed proximal ICA after the extradural clinoididectomy was 2.17±1.04 mm on the lateral side and 2.16±0.89 mm on the medial side. The thickness of the Yasargil clip blade used during the clipping surgery was 1.35 mm measured with a digital precision ruler. Conclusion: The proximal length obtained by performing an external anterior clinoidectomy is about 2 mm, sufficient for proximal control during PCoA aneurysm surgery, considering the thickness of the aneurysm clips. Background: Medical colleges in Central India often face shortages of cadavers for anatomical education, hindering the development of future doctors' practical skills. Whole body donation programs offer a potential solution, but their impact in this region remains unexplored. Objective: This study investigates the influence of whole body donation programs on medical colleges in Central India. Methods: A mixed-methods approach will be employed. Quantitative data will be collected through surveys of medical educators and students of Ram Krishna Medical College Hosptal and Research Centre, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh to assess the perceived impact of whole body donation on practical skill development, curriculum effectiveness, and student confidence. Qualitative data will be gathered through interviews with key stakeholders involved in donation programs to understand challenges and opportunities. Expected Outcomes: The study aims to reveal how whole body donation programs contribute to: • Enhanced practical anatomical training for medical students. • Development of more competent and confident future doctors. • Identification of potential challenges associated with these programs in the Central Indian context. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate patterns of cochlear ossification (CO) in cadaveric temporal bones of patients who underwent vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery via the translabyrinthine (TL), middle cranial fossa (MF), or retrosigmoid (RS) approaches. STUDY DESIGN: Histopathologic analysis of cadaveric temporal bones. SETTING: Multi-institutional national temporal bone repository. METHODS: The National Institute of Deafness and Communication Disorders and House Temporal Bone Laboratory at the University of California, Los Angeles and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Otopathology Laboratory were searched for cadaveric temporal bones with a history of VS for which microsurgery was performed. Exclusion criteria included non-VS and perioperative death within 30 days of surgery. Temporal bones were analyzed histologically for CO of the basal, middle, and apical turns. RESULTS: Of 92 temporal bones with a history of schwannoma from both databases, 12 of these cases met the inclusion criteria. The approaches for tumor excision included 2 MF, 4 RS, and 6 TL approaches. CO was observed in all temporal bones that had undergone TL surgery. Among temporal bones that had undergone MF or RS surgeries, 5/6 had no CO, and 1/6 had partial ossification. This single case was noted to have intraoperative vestibular violation after RS surgery upon histopathologic and chart review. CONCLUSION: In this temporal bone series, all temporal bones that had undergone TL demonstrated varying degrees of CO on histological analysis. MF and RS cases did not exhibit CO except in the case of vestibular violation. When cochlear implantation is planned or possible after VS surgery, surgeons may consider using a surgical approach that does not violate the labyrinth.

Introduction: The development of anatomy can be contributed to in various ways. Throughout history, anatomy has essentially been governed by men. Little is said about the women without whom the teaching of anatomy would not have been possible - women who donated their bodies so that others could learn from them – women donors. Aims: This study aims to analyse the donor base, focusing on women donors who joined the Conscious Body Donation Programme at the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice and declared donation of their bodies for scientific and teaching purposes. The principles of the Conscious Body Donation Programme in Poland are also discussed using the example of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, which initiated the programme in 2003. Materials and methods: The analysis covered the donors database maintained at the Medical University of Silesia from 2000 till now. The study included such aspects as the number of declarations made, gender, age of donors, number of resignations from the body donation program, and the number of withdrawals by the university from accepting a donor's body. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Among 2091 donors, 53.12 % were female (n = 1589) and 46.88 % were male (n = 1402). The number of declarations has been steadily increasing since 2000. Analysing the number of declarations made by women - the highest number of declarations was made in 2009 (n = 112), 2017 (n = 191), and 2023 (n = 123 declarations). The average age at which women made declarations was 63.12 ± 13.82 years. The mean age of death was 78 ± 10.48 years with the mean age of death of all donors being 75.7 ± 10.81 years. The minimum age of declaration was 18 years, the maximum was 98 years. When analysing the age ranges in which pledges were made, women were most likely to pledge between 60 and 70 years of age (525 declarations). By 2024, 51 women had resigned from becoming donors. The average age of resignation is 63.75 ± 13.52 years. The minimum age of resignation was 26 years and the maximum was 87 years. Conclusions: Currently, medical knowledge is growing rapidly. The nobility of donors, including female donors, who choose to donate their bodies for scientific and teaching purposes, reaches far beyond the grave. Such women live on forever remembered by students and then by doctors, physiotherapists, nurses and midwives in a variety of working circumstances often saving human lives, because no teaching aid can illustrate the human body as perfectly as the human body.

This experiment aimed to investigate the effects of natural antioxidants in powders of beetroot (Br), grape pomace (Gp), and willow (W) added to the diet at two levels (1% and 0.5%) on carcass traits, meat quality, and economic feasibility of thermally-stressed (average 33°C) broilers. Six hundred thirty Ross-308 day-old chicks were reared. After 2 weeks of starter feeding, the treatments were applied with grower feed followed by finisher feed until marketing age (42 days). The treatments were as follows: T1: Control (basal diet BD); T2 (BD+1%Br); T3 (BD+0.5%Br); T4 (BD+1%Gp); T5 (BD+0.5%Gp); T6 (BD+1%W); T7 (BD+0.5%W). A Complete Random Design (CRD) was used with three replicates per treatment; thirty birds per replicate. The results of carcass traits showed that control birds deposited significantly more fat in their abdomen than treated groups. Breast meat quality results indicated that the control group lost significantly more water than the treated groups during cooking, and the T5 group was significantly juicier than the control. The deluxe meat produced from groups fed feed fortified with eco-antioxidants had significantly lower lipid content and higher moisture, protein, unsaturated fatty acids (except T2), polyunsaturated fatty acids (except T2), omega-3 (except T2 and T4), omega-6 (except T2, T3, and T5), vitamin A (except T2 and T6), and vitamin E (in T7 and T4) than the control. Furthermore, the treated groups' meat contained significantly more antioxidants (GPx) and less MDA than the control. Economically, the benefit (output) obtained from treated groups was significantly higher than that of the control group. Thus, the dietary supplementation with eco-antioxidants decreased carcass abdominal fat, produced luxurious nutritionally superior meat for consumers, and improved economic benefit.

PurposeExcision of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is recommended when implanting a medial pivot (MP) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to reduce the risk of limiting flexion by over-tensioning the flexion space. The present study determined whether PCL retention (1) limits internal tibial rotation and (2) causes anterior lift-off of the insert in 90° flexion after implantation of an MP design with unrestricted caliper verified kinematic alignment (KA).MethodsFour surgeons implanted an MP TKA design with medial ball-in-socket and lateral flat tibial insert in ten fresh-frozen cadaveric knees. ObjectiveTo describe an intraoral approach (IOA) for zygomatic sialadenectomy in dogs and to compare this surgical approach to a modified lateral orbitotomy approach (LOA).Study designCadaveric study and short case series.Sample populationTen canine cadavers and three dogs with clinical disease.MethodsBilateral zygomatic sialoadenectomies were performed in six mesocephalic, two brachycephalic and two dolichocephalic cadavers, randomly assigned to IOA on one side and LOA on the contralateral side. Duration of surgery, ease of surgical stage scores (rated on 5-point Likert scale) and completeness of gland removal were recorded. Additionally, IOA was performed in three dogs with zygomatic salivary gland (ZSG) disease.ResultsRemoval of the ZSG was complete in 8/10 and 10/10 dogs using the IOA and LOA, respectively. Surgery was faster with IOA (42.0 min; 33.5-49.6 min) than LOA (65.7 min; 54.9-76.4 min, p = .005). Ease of removal did not differ between approaches (p = .091). Diseased ZSGs were successfully removed in three dogs without intra- or short-term postoperative complications.ConclusionsThe intraoral approach described here was technically equally challenging but faster than the LOA. BACKGROUND: The supraclavicular fossa is the dominant location for human brown adipose tissue (BAT). Activation of BAT promotes non-shivering thermogenesis by utilization of glucose and free fatty acids and has been the focus of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches for modulation in order to improve body weight and glucose homeostasis. Sympathetic neural control of supraclavicular BAT has received much attention, but its innervation has not been extensively investigated in humans. METHODS: Dissection of the cervical region in human cadavers was performed to find the distribution of sympathetic nerve branches to supraclavicular fat pad. Furthermore, proximal segments of the 4th cervical nerve were evaluated histologically to assess its sympathetic components. RESULTS: Nerve branches terminating in supraclavicular fat pad were identified in all dissections, including those from the 3rd and 4th cervical nerves and from the cervical sympathetic plexus. Histology of the proximal segments of the 4th cervical nerves confirmed tyrosine hydroxylase positive thin nerve fibers in all fascicles with either a scattered or clustered distribution pattern. The scattered pattern was more predominant than the clustered pattern (80% vs. 20%) across cadavers. These sympathetic nerve fibers occupied only 2.48% of the nerve cross sectional area on average. CONCLUSIONS: Human sympathetic nerves use multiple pathways to innervate the supraclavicular fat pad. The present finding serves as a framework for future clinical approaches to activate human BAT in the supraclavicular region.

Essential sources of arterial vascularisation in the head and neck region are the left and right common carotid arteries (CCA) and their branches. The left CCA (LCCA) originates from the arch of the aorta and the right CCA originates from the brachiocephalic trunk. In this case report, there was a bilateral higher division of CCA at the plane of the greater cornua of the hyoid bone, unilateral tri-ramification of the LCCA and the left external carotid artery (LECA), and the origin of the linguo-facial trunk and the pharyngo-occipital trunk from the LECA. An aneurysm formed in the distal part of LECA before its termination. In this case, we propose a novel categorization called the punnapatla classification for the anatomical variance branching forms of ECA. The gluteus maximus (GM) is a big quadrilateral musculature that lines the rear portion of the pelvis. It is innervated by the inferior gluteal nerve. The sciatic nerve, inferior gluteal nerve, and posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh are branches of the sacral plexus. The superior and inferior gluteal arteries are the chief arterial supply to the gluteal region. In the present case, there was a dual innervation of the GM. The superior gluteal artery and the superior gluteal nerve was piercing the piriformis and the inferior gluteal artery was running between the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh and the inferior gluteal nerve. According to our literature review, anatomical studies in which this cadaveric procedure has been performed have not been previously reported. Background There are differing opinions regarding the specific mechanical forces related to contraction of the frontalis muscle and how it exerts its effects on eyebrow motion. Objectives The goal of this study was to perform a detailed anatomic and clinical study of the frontalis muscle in cadavers and patients to better define the movement of the frontalis muscle. Methods This study consisted of 4 arms, which included: (1) dynamic ecography to evaluate movement of the frontalis muscle, (2) anatomical study of the relationship between the frontalis muscle and the deep fascia, (3) histological study to define the frontalis muscle attachments, and (4) clinical study to evaluate the action of the frontalis muscle in patients undergoing a temporal facelift. Results The frontalis muscle was attached, inserted, and adhered to the deep layer of the fascia in the superior cephalic and middle third of the forehead. In the superior cephalic third of the forehead, loose areolar tissue was observed deep to the frontalis muscle and the deep layer of the fascia. Within the middle third of the forehead, the deep layer of the galea was fused with the periosteum and firmly adhered. In the inferior caudal third of the forehead, the frontalis muscle was separated from the deep galeal aponeurosis and interdigitated with the orbicularis muscle. When the frontal muscle end was dissected free from the deep fascia by approximately 1 cm and pulled upward, no movement of the eyebrows was observed. Eyebrow elevation was only achieved by pulling on the inferior part of the muscle. Conclusions Frontalis muscle movement occurs from the inferior caudal end toward the mid-part of the muscle as it contracts centripetally on its superficial layer, sliding over the deep part strongly attached to the deep fascia. Background: Cadaveric intervertebral discs are often studied for a variety of research questions, and outcomes are interpreted in the in vivo context. Unfortunately, the cadaveric disc does not inherently represent the LIVE condition, such that the disc structure (geometry), composition (T2 relaxation time), and mechanical function (opening pressure, OP) measured in the cadaver do not necessarily represent the in vivo disc. Methods: We conducted serial evaluations in the Yucatan minipig of disc geometry, T2 relaxation time, and OP to quantify the changes that occur with progressive dissection and used axial loading to restore the in vivo condition. Results: We found no difference in any parameter from LIVE to TORSO; thus, within 2 h of sacrifice, the TORSO disc can represent the LIVE condition. With serial dissection and sample preparation the disc height increased (SEGMENT height 18% higher than TORSO), OP decreased (POTTED was 67% lower than TORSO), and T2 time was unchanged. With axial loading, an imposed stress of 0.20–0.33 MPa returned the disc to in vivo, LIVE disc geometry and OP, although T2 time was decreased. There was a linear correlation between applied stress and OP, and this was conserved across multiple studies and species. Conclusion: To restore the LIVE disc state in human studies or other animal models, we recommend measuring the OP/stress relationship and using this relationship to select the applied stress necessary to recover the in vivo condition. Background: Pediatric regional anesthesia has been driven by the gradual rise in the adoption of opioid-sparing strategies and the growing concern over the possible adverse effects of general anesthetics on neurodevelopment. Nonetheless, performing regional anesthesia studies in a pediatric population is challenging and accounts for the scarce evidence. This study aimed to review the scientific foundation of studies in cadavers to assess regional anesthesia techniques in children. Methods: We searched the following databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science. We included anatomical cadaver studies assessing peripheral nerve blocks in children. The core data collected from studies were included in tables and comprised block type, block evaluation, results, and conclusion. Results: The search identified 2409 studies, of which, 16 were anatomical studies on the pediatric population. The techniques evaluated were the erector spinae plane block, ilioinguinal/iliohypogastric nerve block, sciatic nerve block, maxillary nerve block, paravertebral block, femoral nerve block, radial nerve block, greater occipital nerve block, infraclavicular brachial plexus block, and infraorbital nerve block. Conclusion: Regional anesthesia techniques are commonly performed in children, but the lack of anatomical studies may result in reservations regarding the dispersion and absorption of local anesthetics. Background: Evidence suggests the plantar fascia and its interphase with the flexor digitorum brevis muscle can play a relevant role in plantar heel pain. Needling interventions could offer an appropriate treatment strategy to addressing this interface. Objective: We compared the accuracy and safety of ultrasound-guided versus palpation-guided procedures for the proper targeting of the interface between the plantar fascia and the flexor digitorum brevis with a solid needle. Methods: A crossover cadaveric study was conducted. Five experienced therapists performed a series of 20 needle insertions each (n = 100 in total, 10 landmark-guided and 10 ultrasound-guided) on 10 anatomical samples. The therapists were instructed to accurately place the needle on the interface between the plantar fascia and the flexor digitorum brevis muscle. The distance of the tip of the needle to the identified target (accuracy), the surrounding sensitive structures targeted (safety), the time needed for the procedure, the number of needle passes, and the needle length outside the skin were assessed. Results: The ultrasound-guided technique was associated with a significantly higher accuracy (p < 0.001) but without differences in safety (p = 0.249) as compared to the palpation-guided procedure. Conclusion: Our results suggest that ultrasound-guided insertion exhibits greater accuracy but not greater safety than palpation-guided insertion when targeting the interface between the plantar fascia and the flexor digitorum brevis. Dermatomal analgesia achieved with quadratus lumborum blocks is site‑dependent and inconsistent. Cadaveric and clinical studies reveal multiple mechanisms of action. We dissected six fresh human cadavers bilaterally and thoroughly studied their neurological linkages to the quadratus lumborum muscle (QLM) to identify neural structures and block targets. At the end of the investigation, only the subcostal nerve (anterolateral) and the ilioinguinal nerves were found near the QLM in all specimens. The iliohypogastric nerve was found in only two specimens. No further neural targets were found in the fascial planes before and posterior to the QLM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A rare case of an anomalous location of the orifice of the coronary artery was found in a 99-year-old male cadaver undergoing routine dissection. The presence of the right coronary artery (RCA), left coronary artery (LCA), and conus artery (conus branch) originating from the right Valsalva sinus are the characteristic findings of this case. Then, the LCA passed through the aorta and the pulmonary artery. The LCA and RCA branches were normal. These findings are useful for future surgical procedures, including cardiac catheterization. Background and Aims: Simulation is increasingly used in medical teaching. Various studies have evaluated different simulation models for training of regional anesthesia (RA). We compared the use of human cadaver and blue phantom models for training of regional anesthesia to novice postgraduate students of anesthesiology. Material and Methods: Fifty students were taught knobology of the ultrasonography (USG) machine. They were divided into two equal groups by computer-generated random number table, and the groups assigned were kept in sealed envelopes. In group BP, students were trained on a blue phantom model, and in group HC, students were trained on human cadaver. After training, a didactic video of sonoanatomy of the supraclavicular block was shown to all participants. The block performance was then judged on patients requiring supraclavicular block. The primary objective of the study was to compare the block performance time, and secondary objectives were the quality of image acquired, orientation of transducer to the target, identification of ultrasound artifacts, errors committed, complications, and success rate. Results: The mean block performance time was shorter in group HC compared to group BP (451.96 ± 50.25 and 526.48 ± 43.486 s, respectively; P < 0.001). The image quality score, transducer orientation to the target, and identification of USG artifacts were better in group HC compared to group BP, with lesser number of needle passes. Conclusion: Cadaver-based training produced better results compared to blue phantom simulator model for teaching of ultrasound-guided RA to novice postgraduate trainees of anesthesiology. Background: This study aimed to identify exact anatomical landmarks and ideal injection volumes for safe adductor canal blocks (ACB). Methods: Fifty thighs from 25 embalmed adult Korean cadavers were used. The measurement baseline was the line connecting the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the midpoint of the patellar base. All target points were measured perpendicular to the baseline. The relevant cadaveric structures were observed using ultrasound (US) and confirmed in living individuals. US-guided dye injection was performed to determine the ideal volume. Results: The apex of the femoral triangle was 25.3 ± 2.2 cm distal to the ASIS on the baseline and 5.3 ± 1.0 cm perpendicular to that point. The midpoint of the superior border of the vasto-adductor membrane (VAM) was 27.4 ± 2.0 cm distal to the ASIS on the baseline and 5.0 ± 1.1 cm perpendicular to that point. The VAM had a trapezoidal shape and was connected as an aponeurosis between the medial edge of the vastus medialis muscle and lateral edge of the adductor magnus muscle. The nerve to the vastus medialis penetrated the muscle proximal to the superior border of the VAM in 70% of specimens. The VAM appeared on US as a hyperechoic area connecting the vastus medialis and adductor magnus muscles between the sartorius muscle and femoral artery. Conclusions: Confirming the crucial landmark, the VAM, is beneficial when performing ACB. It is advisable to insert the needle obliquely below the superior VAM border, and a 5 mL injection is considered sufficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The erector spinae plane (ESP) block is the most sought-after block since its inception. However, it is more of dorsal rami block with unpredictable ventral diffusion to the paravertebral area. We injected dye in ESP and other paraspinal spaces to study and compare the dye diffusion pattern along the neuroaxis and paraspinal region in human cadavers. Methods: In six soft-embalmed cadavers (12 specimens), 20 mL methylene blue dye (erector spinae plane and paravertebral space) or indocyanine green dye (inter-ligament space) was injected bilaterally using an in-plane ultrasound-guided technique at the level of the costotransverse junction of fourth thoracic vertebrae. Dye spread was evaluated bilaterally in the coronal plane in the paravertebral and intercostal spaces from the 1st and the 12th rib. Axial and sagittal sections were performed at the level of the 4th thoracic vertebrae. After cross sections, the extent of dye spread was investigated in ESP, inter-ligament, and paravertebral spaces. The staining of the ventral and dorsal rami and spread into the intercostal spaces was evaluated. Results: ESP injection was mainly restricted dorsal to the costotransverse foramen and did not spread anteriorly to the paravertebral space. The paravertebral injection involved the origin of the spinal nerve and spread laterally to the intercostal space. The inter-ligament space injection showed an extensive anterior and posterior dye spread involving the ventral and dorsal rami. Conclusions: Following ESP injection, there was no spread of the dye anteriorly to the paravertebral space and it only involved the dorsal rami. Inter-ligamentous space injection appears to be the most promising block as dye spread both anteriorly to paravertebral space and posteriorly toward ESP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Tendon injures rank as the second most common hand injuries, and unsatisfactory repair can significantly impact a patient's everyday life. Over the years, various suture techniques have been studied in the pursuit of finding the optimal repair method. The ideal tendon repair should achieve maximum strength, while being easy to perform and minimizing tissue trauma. This study aims to compare the mechanical properties of the cross-locked U-Tang 4-strand suture to its unmodified version, the U-Tang 4-strand suture, to assess which technique offers greater repair strength. Methods: Sixteen Achilles tendons from New Zealand White rabbits were randomly assigned to one of two suture technique groups; an original U-Tang 4-strand suture or a cross-locked U-Tang 4-strand suture, both performed using a 4-0 Supramid thread. The specimens were tested in uniaxial tension after a preconditioning phase. Cross-sectional area, load until failure, gap formation, stiffness, elastic modulus, and failure stress were determined. Results: The standard U-Tang 4-strand suture withstood a maximum force of 25.48 ± 6.06 N, while the cross-locked version endured 33.90 ± 6.09 N. This indicates that the modified version demonstrated significantly greater strength (p = 0.021). The elastic modulus of the cross-locked U-Tang 4-strand suture (0.02 ± 0.003 MPa) was significantly higher than that of the original version (0.01 ± 0.006 MPa) (p = 0.028). No significant differences were observed regarding the cross-sectional area, load at 2 mm gap formation, stiffness and failure stress. Conclusion: Employing the cross-locked U-Tang 4-strand suture results in a significantly greater maximum force and elastic modulus compared to the original U-Tang 4-strand suture, utilizing the same thread and number of strands and knots. Therefore, the cross-locking version provides an alternative for achieving more stable initial repair strength.
