Successful integration of point-of-care testing (POCT) into clinical settings requires improved assay sensitivity and precision to match laboratory standards. Here, we show how innovations in amplified biosensing, imaging, and data processing, coupled with deep learning, can help improve POCT. To demonstrate the performance of our approach, we present a rapid and cost-effective paper-based high-sensitivity vertical flow assay (hs-VFA) for quantitative measurement of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), a biomarker widely used for measuring acute cardiac damage and assessing cardiovascular risk. The hs-VFA includes a colorimetric paper-based sensor, a portable reader with time-lapse imaging, and computational algorithms for digital assay validation and outlier detection. Operating at the level of a rapid at-home test, the hs-VFA enabled the accurate quantification of cTnI using 50 μL of serum within 15 min per test and achieved a detection limit of 0.2 pg/mL, enabled by gold ion amplification chemistry and time-lapse imaging. The highly contagious nature and 100% fatality rate contribute to the ongoing and expanding impact of the African swine fever virus (ASFV), causing significant economic losses worldwide. Herein, we developed a cascaded colorimetric detection using the combination of a CRISPR/Cas14a system, G-quadruplex DNAzyme, and microfluidic paper-based analytical device. This CRISPR/Cas14a-G4 biosensor could detect ASFV as low as 5 copies/μL and differentiate the wild-type and mutated ASFV DNA with 2-nt difference. Moreover, this approach was employed to detect ASFV in porcine plasma. A broad linear detection range was observed, and the limit of detection in spiked porcine plasma was calculated to be as low as 42-85 copies/μL. Our results indicate that the developed paper platform exhibits the advantages of high sensitivity, excellent specificity, and low cost, making it promising for clinical applications in the field of DNA disease detection and suitable for popularization in low-resourced areas.

This study presents a breakthrough in the field of onsite bacterial detection, offering an innovative, rapid, and ultrasensitive colorimetric biosensor for the detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7, using chemically modified melamine foam (MF). Different from conventional platforms, such as 96-well plates and fiber-based membranes, the modified MF features a macroporous reticulated three-dimensional (3D) framework structure, allowing fast and free movement of large biomolecules and bacteria cells through the MF structure in every direction and ensuring good accessibility of entire active binding sites of the framework structure with the target bacteria, which significantly increased sensitive and volume-responsive detection of whole-cell bacteria. The biosensing platform requires less than 1.5 h to complete the quantitative detection with a sensitivity of 10 cfu/mL, discernible by the naked eye, and an enhanced sensitivity of 5 cfu/mL with the help of a smartphone. Following a short enrichment period of 1 h, the sensitivity was further amplified to 2 cfu/mL. The biosensor material is volume responsive, making the biosensing platform sensitivity increase as the volume of the sample increases, and is highly suitable for testing large-volume fluid samples. This novel material paves the way for the development of volume-flexible biosensing platforms for the record-fast, onsite, selective, and ultrasensitive detection of various pathogenic bacteria in real-world applications.

Bioactive compounds have been shown to promote healthy human development and protect against certain diseases including some cancers. Tropical pumpkins bred for consumption, such as calabaza (Cucurbita moschata), possess these compounds, though concentrations vary considerably between varieties. Bioactive compound quantification methods can be expensive, complex, and generate considerable hazardous waste. A predictive tool utilizing the relationship between extrinsic properties and tristimulus colorimetry values of calabaza would allow for significantly higher throughput with lower requirements for equipment, training, and laboratory consumables. Therefore, this study examined correlations between flesh color and bioactive compound quantities of several calabaza germplasm lines to assess the utility of a sustainable and portable predictive tool. CIEL* a* b* values of pumpkin flesh were assessed using a colorimeter and compared to bioactive compound concentrations determined analytically. Redness was found to correlate with increased ascorbic acid and total soluble solids content. Yellowness correlated with β-carotene equivalent carotenoids and ascorbic acid content. This work reports a series of yellow-green near-infrared (NIR) reflective pigments, Ba(Mg 6-x-y Zn y Ti 6-x Cr 2x)O 19 (x = 0–1.0, y = 0–2.5), with strong NIR reflectivity for solar thermal energy regulation. Comprehensive analyses were carried out to characterize the obtained pigments including X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–Vis–NIR spectrophotometry, and CIE L*a*b* color measurement. Absorption spectra of Ba(Mg 6-x Ti 6-x Cr 2x)O 19 showed that the yellow-green absorption is attributed to the octahedrally coordinated Cr3+ with d-d electron transitions of 4A 2 (F)→4T 1 (F) and 4A 2 (F)→4T 2 (F). However, their broad absorption peak centered at 1200 nm severely deteriorated the insulating properties of the pigments. Through substituting Mg with Zn, the obtained pigment Ba(Mg 2.5 Zn 2.5 Ti 5 Cr 2)O 19 showed an excellent NIR solar reflectance (R* = 67 %) with color performances (L* = 61.98, a* = −18.72, b* = 22.23). EnergyPlus simulation results show that for a warm city (Haikou), the Ba(Mg 2.5 Zn 2.5 Ti 5 Cr 2)O 19 coating for the external surface of a model house (TSR = 35 %, R* = 55 %) can reduce annual cooling energy consumption by 8 % of the house. Detecting glucose levels is crucial for diabetes patients as it enables timely and effective management, preventing complications and promoting overall health. In this endeavor, we have designed a novel, affordable point-of-care diagnostic device utilizing microfluidic principles, a smartphone camera, and established laboratory colorimetric methods for accurate glucose estimation. Our proposed microfluidic device comprises layers of adhesive poly-vinyl films stacked on a poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) base sheet, with micro-channel contours precision-cut using a cutting printer. Employing the gold standard glucose-oxidase/peroxidase reaction on this microfluidic platform, we achieve enzymatic glucose determination. The resulting colored complex, formed by phenol and 4-aminoantipyrine in the presence of hydrogen peroxide generated during glucose oxidation, is captured at various glucose concentrations using a smartphone camera. Raw images are processed and utilized as input data for a 2-D convolutional neural network (CNN) deep learning classifier, demonstrating an impressive 95% overall accuracy against new images. The glucose predictions done by CNN are compared with ISO 15197:2013/2015 gold standard norms. Furthermore, the classifier exhibits outstanding precision, recall, and F1 score of 94%, 93%, and 93%, respectively, as validated through our study, showcasing its exceptional predictive capability. Next, a user-friendly smartphone application named "GLUCOLENS AI" was developed to capture images, perform image processing, and communicate with cloud server containing the CNN classifier. In this study, a ratiometric fluorescent sensor CdTe QDs@ZIF-8 with butterfly spectra is successfully constructed by in situ encapsulating mercaptopropionic acid-modified CdTe quantum dots in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with a simple strategy, and used for the detection of tetracycline in fluorescence/smartphone colorimetry dual-mode. ZIF-8 not only reduces the agglomeration of the quantum dots but also surprisingly generates a new green fluorescence signal at 524 nm while the red fluorescence of the CdTe quantum dots at 650 nm quenches when tetracycline is added. The two opposing fluorescence signals create a butterfly-shaped fluorescence spectrum, allowing the sensor to detect tetracycline over a linear range of 0–70 μM with the detection limit (LOD) of 0.0155 μM by using a ratiometric fluorescence technique. What is more, based on the obvious color change of the fluorescent sensor gradually from red to green under UV light, a highly stable point-of-care testing sensor has been developed for on-site detection of tetracycline through color recognition by smartphones, which can be used for real-time detection of this antibiotic in the range of 0–1000 μM with the LOD of 0.0249 μM. Aims: Careful selection of materials and resin cement shade can minimize color changes in laminate veneers. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of two ceramic material types, lithium disilicate glass–ceramic material (Ivoclar, Schaan/Liechtenstein; IPS e.max), computer aided design (CAD) and IPS e.max Press, and four different resin cement shades on color changes in lithium disilicate ceramic laminate veneers. Methods: Forty extracted human maxillary first premolars were prepared to receive a laminate veneer. Optical scanning and digital designing were used to prepare 20 IPS e.max CAD and 20 IPS e.max Press veneer samples. These samples were divided into four groups based on resin cement shade and material: Group CAD A1 : (IPS e.max CAD with A1 cement shade), Group CAD T : (IPS e.max CAD with translucent cement shade), Group CAD M : (IPS e.max CAD with milky bright cement shade), Group CAD B1 : (IPS e.max CAD with B1 cement shade) and the same divisions for IPS e.max Press. Before cementation, color measurements were obtained using precision colorimeter NR110. After cementation, the ∆E (color change) value was recorded and tabulated. One‐way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's post hoc test were used to evaluate the influence of ceramic material types and cement shade on ∆E. Results: There were significant differences between the IPS e.max CAD and e.max Press veneers for the four tested cement shades. The highest color change was observed in press M veneers (8.84 ± 0.63931) while the lowest color change was observed in CAD M veneers (0.5 ± 0.16371). There were significant differences in color change based on cement shade, with B1 showing the greatest change (8.84 ± 0.47440 for Press veneers and 2.3 ± 0.11992 for CAD veneers). Conclusions: Different shades of resin cements and different manufacturing techniques produce different levels of color changes therefore careful selection of materials and cement shade can minimize color changes in laminate veneers. Background: White tea, derived from the Camellia sinensis plant like other teas, uses tender buds and young leaves and undergoes minimal processing. This results in higher levels of antioxidants and bioactive substances, which may enhance thermogenesis more effectively than other teas. This first human study aimed to investigate the acute effects of white tea consumption on resting energy expenditure (REE) and some vital signs, including blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and body temperature (BT). Methods: Thirty-two healthy female volunteers with normal initial BP and whose caffeine intakes were < 300 mg/d were enrolled in the study. The caffeine and total phenolic content of white tea samples were determined by the high-performance liquid chromatography method and the Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric method, respectively. After baseline measurements, participants consumed white tea containing 6 mg of caffeine per kilogram of lean body mass, and the white tea was prepared with bottled drinking water at 80 °C and brewed for 3 min. REE, BP, and BT were assessed at various intervals (baseline, 30 min, 120 min, and 180 min) post-consumption of the white tea. Results: The results revealed a significant increase in REE by 8.7% at 180 min after the consumption. In particular, there was a substantial difference in both values between the intervals of 30 min to 180 min and baseline to 180 min for REE (p < 0.05). Maximal oxygen consumption and BT also increased significantly over time (p < 0.05) and the observed increment in BT suggests a thermogenic effect associated with white tea consumption. However, systolic BP, diastolic BP, and heart rate showed no significant difference. Conclusions: These findings suggest white tea consumption may acutely enhance REE and maximal oxygen consumption, so the results are promising for body weight management. Background: Huashi Baidu Formula (HBF) is a clinical formula known for its efficacy against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). HBF may reduce the number of patients with abnormal serum creatinine while improving respiratory symptoms, suggesting that this formula may have potential for treating acute kidney injury (AKI). However, the protective effect of HBF on AKI has not been definitively confirmed, and the mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, the present study explored the renoprotective effects and molecular mechanisms of HBF and screened for its active ingredients to identify new potential applications of renoprotection by HBF. Methods: The present study first assessed the protective effects of HBF on AKI in a DOX-induced mouse model. Then, RNA-seq and bioinformatics analyses were used to explore the related pathological processes and potential molecular mechanisms, which were subsequently validated using qRT-PCR and Western blotting. Furthermore, candidate compounds with potential binding affinity to two pivotal targets, sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), were screened from the 29 constituents present in the blood using Microscale Thermophoresis (MST). Finally, to identify the active ingredients, the candidate components were re-screened using the SphK1 kinase activity detection system or the uPA/PAI-1 substrate colorimetric assay system. Results: In the DOX-induced AKI mouse model, therapeutic administration of HBF significantly reduced the levels of CRE, BUN, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and UA in plasma and the levels of MDA, T-CHO, and TG in kidney tissue. Additionally, the levels of TP and Alb in plasma and SOD and CAT in the kidney tissue were significantly increased. Histopathological assessment revealed that HBF reduced tubular vacuolation, renal interstitial inflammatory cell infiltration, tubular atrophy, and positive staining of renal interstitial collagen. RNA-seq and bioinformatics analyses showed that oxidative stress, the immune-inflammatory response, and extracellular matrix (ECM) formation could be the pathological processes that HBF targets to exerts its renoprotective effects. Furthermore, HBF regulated the APJ/SPHK1/NF-κB and APJ/PAI-1/TGFβ signaling axes and reduced the phosphorylation levels of NF-κB p65 and SMAD2 and the expression of cytokines and the ECM downstream of the axis. Finally, six SphK1 inhibitors (paeoniflorin, astragalin, emodin, glycyrrhisoflavone, quercetin, and liquiritigenin) and three PAI-1 inhibitors (glycyrrhisoflavone, licochalcone B, and isoliquiritigenin) were identified as potentially active ingredients in HBF. Conclusion: In brief, our investigation underscores the renoprotective effect of HBF in a DOX-induced AKI model mice, elucidating its mechanisms through distinct pathological processes and identifying key bioactive compounds. A colorimetric device is proposed for identifying and detecting the adulteration of various types of starch and flour by diffuse reflection of UV and IR radiation from LEDs. The color characteristics of the samples (RGB channel values) were determined using cameras on OnePlus 10 Pro and iPhone 14 smartphones with installed applications PhotoMetrix PRO, ColorGrab, and RGBer. Near-infrared spectra (4000–10 000 cm–1) were recorded on a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer. Specialized software packages, including TQ Analyst 9, The Unscrambler X, and XLSTAT, processed the dataset of colorimetric and spectral characteristics. The identification features included clustering patterns for different types of starch and flour in principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. Optimal wavelengths for determining the quality of adulteration of the tested samples were identified: for starch, the simultaneous use of all LEDs (365, 390, 850, and 880 nm); for flour, LEDs with wavelengths of 365 and 390 nm. The qualitative adulteration was assessed using graphs of the dependence of the F1 component on the mass fraction of the added foreign substance in the starch or flour. Road markings (RMs) typically consist of a paint layer and a retroreflective layer. They play a crucial role in road safety by offering visibility and guidance to drivers. Over their lifetime, dirt particles, oils, and greases are adsorbed on the RM surface, reducing their visibility and service life. A self-cleaning ability has been widely studied in several substrates. However, for RMs, this represents a breakthrough and a sustainable advance, while having the potential to increase their service life and enhance road safety. In this context, nanotechnology can be a strong ally through the application of semiconductor materials, such as TiO2, to develop the self-cleaning ability. In addition to this novelty in RMs, quantifying this ability in terms of pollutant removal efficiency is also a challenge. In this sense, artificial intelligence (AI) and colorimetry can be combined to achieve improved results. The aims of the work herein reported were to assess the self-cleaning capability in an RM paint through the mass incorporation of semiconductors, evaluate their photocatalytic efficiency using traditional (spectrophotometric) and modern (AI-enhanced) colorimetry techniques, and compare the results obtained using both techniques. To this end, a water-based acrylic RM paint was modified through the mass incorporation of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% of nano-TiO2, and a pollutant model widely used, Rhodamine B, was applied onto their surface. The samples were irradiated with a light source that simulates sunlight for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h. Visual analysis and spectrophotometric and artificial intelligence-enhanced colorimetry techniques were used and compared to evaluate the pollutant removal. The results confirm that RM paints with 2% and 3% nano-TiO2 incorporated have a significantly higher pollutant removal ability and that both colorimetric techniques used are suitable for this assessment. The use of pomace in bakery products opens up new possibilities for the management of waste products from the fruit industry. Such activities are integral to the concept of sustainable development and the circular economy. In this research, the quality of dough and final products was analyzed by replacing 10–50% of the typical flour (wheat, rice, and corn) with chokeberry pomace flour. The instrumental color measurements and the sensory analysis showed that the dough and the muffins made with the fruit flour were significantly different from the control samples. Flour substitutions of over 10%, while enriching muffins with chokeberry flour, led to a decrease in product quality (texture, dough rise, sensory quality), especially for muffins with gluten. The sensory study showed that a substitution of 10% of typical flour resulted in products acceptable to potential consumers, but a higher substitution reduced the overall quality. Purpose: Current denture base resins lack adequate strength and antimicrobial properties, necessitating the exploration of alternative solutions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of curcumin incorporation on the physico-mechanical properties of heat-cured denture base resin, filling a gap in the literature regarding this correlation. Methods: Heat-cured denture base resin was supplemented with increasing concentrations of curcumin (CR). Groups were designated as CR-0 (0%), CR-0.05 (0.05%), CR-0.10 (0.10%), CR-0.50 (0.50%), and CR-1 (1%), based on the increasing concentrations of curcumin incorporated into the material. Physico-mechanical properties, including flexural strength, surface roughness, fracture toughness, impact strength, and color difference, were evaluated following the testing standards. Statistical analysis involved Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA followed by Dunn's test for multiple comparisons, with significance set at P ≤ 0.05 and Bonferroni's correction applied to p-values. Results: Flexural strength peaked at 153.80 MPa in the CR-0.10 group, while surface roughness was lowest at 0.14 micrometers in the CR-0.50 group. Fracture toughness reached its highest value at 1.80 kJ/m^2 in the CR-0.05 group, and impact strength was greatest at 6.52 Joules in the CR-0.05 group. Additionally, color difference was least pronounced in the CR-0.50 group. Flexural strength, surface roughness, fracture toughness, impact strength, and color difference varied significantly among the control group and different curcumin concentrations (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Incorporating curcumin into denture base resin alters both optical and mechanical properties. The bovine lungworm, Dictyocaulus viviparus (Bloch, 1782), is highly pathogenic and disease outbreaks can be difficult to predict and manage. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is vital, but without a sensitive diagnostic test this remains challenging in clinical practice. High performance molecular detection tools are therefore required to improve the diagnosis of this parasite and promote the implementation of strategic control measures. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), a rapid DNA assay, offers potential for field-based detection. Here we report a novel LAMP assay (DviLAMP), that was designed to target the D. viviparus internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) ribosomal DNA region. Firstly, genomic DNA was extracted from a single D. viviparus L1 larva to amplify and clone the ITS2 into the recombinant plasmid (DviITS2). The DviLAMP successfully detected the target, with results shown by gel electrophoresis and real-time analysis, in addition to point-of-care amenable end-point detection: colorimetry and lateral flow dipstick (LFD). Analytical sensitivity can detect 0.5 ng DviITS2 following 45 min of incubation at 64°C, increasing to just 1 pg following 90 min of incubation. Using the same primers, other nematodes of cattle, Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora, were also detectable both by gel electrophoresis and real-time. However, when FITC and biotin tagged primers were incorporated to adapt the DviLAMP to LFD end-point detection, the LFD showed specific detection of D. viviparus. The longevity and acceptance of aesthetic dental materials are directly proportional to color stability. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the use of multivitamins and the color stability of dental restorative materials. A total of 45 discs of nanohybrid composite, 45 of Reinforced Glass Ionomer (RGI), and 45 of Giomer were prepared. Subsequently, the samples were randomly divided into three solution groups (n = 15): Group 1—Sambucol Pediatric Syrup, Group 2—Hidropolivital Baby Drops, and Group 3—artificial saliva, which is preparation for patients with xerostomia. For 28 days, the specimens were immersed in 10 mL of each multivitamin for two minutes every 24 h. Color measurements were repeated on days 7, 14, 21, and 28. Statistical analysis was performed using the Jamovi software version 2.2.5, employing the Shapiro–Wilk test for normality and the Kruskal–Wallis test for non-parametric data. When comparing materials, statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) were observed between RGI and Giomer, and RGI and composite, but not between Giomer and composite (p = 0.716). The highest change was observed in RGI–Hidropolivital ΔE00 = 3.27 (2.38–4.59) and the least in composite–Sambucol ΔE00 = 0.72 (0.30–1.18). Plants such as herbs, vegetables, fruits, and cereals are closely related to human life. Developing effective testing methods to ensure their safety and quantify their active components are of significant importance. Recently, nanomaterials with enzyme-like activity (known as nanozymes) have been widely developed in various assays, including colorimetric, fluorescence, chemiluminescence, and electrochemical analysis. This review presents the latest advances in analyzing phytochemicals and hazardous substances in plant samples based on nanozymes, including some active ingredients, organophosphorus pesticides, heavy metal ions, and mycotoxins. In this study, 20 different types of magmatic-origin natural stones commonly used in the construction sector were subjected to the most prevalent aging effects in nature, namely freeze-thaw and thermal shock. Prior to and after the aging tests, the Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) values of each sample were calculated by measuring their solar light reflectance values and solar light scattering values. Additionally, the surface color measurements of each sample were taken according to the CIA color index, and the color change (∆E) values were calculated. The primary objective of this study is to determine the changes in SRI and ΔE values of natural stones due to freeze-thaw and thermal shock aging and to examine the impact of the findings on the formation of urban heat islands. As a result of the study, it was determined that the SRI values of the samples were higher after both aging experiments compared to before the aging experiments. When examining ΔE values, it was found that thermal shock experiments caused more significant color changes compared to freeze-thaw experiments. Immunoassays have been widely used for the determination of various analytes in the fields of disease diagnosis, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Dual-signal immunoassays are now advanced and integrated detection technologies with excellent self-correction and self-validation capabilities. In this work, we summarize the recent advances in the development of optical and electrochemical dual-signal immunoassays, including colorimetric, fluorescence, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), electrochemical, electrochemiluminescence, and photoelectrochemical methods. This review particularly emphasizes the working principle of diverse dual-signal immunoassays and the utilization of dual-functional molecules and nanomaterials. Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is cultivated in environments with very different climatic conditions and with very different corm rates from place to place, and it is appreciated for its red dried stigmas used as cooking spice and flavoring agent. To enhance the flower morphological and colorimetric traits under environmental stresses, the applications of non-thermal plasma based techniques are increasingly being investigated in the field of agricultural science as an alternative to conventional pre-germination treatments. Therefore, a field study was conducted to compare four levels P1 (no treatment), P2 (5 minute treatment), P3 (10 minute treatment), P4 (20 minute) and the salinity stress factors in three levels were 2, 4 and 6 dS.m-1 according a factorial design with 3 replications. Flowering beginning in saffron seems to be influenced by the combination of plasma and salinity stress. High concentration of salinity (6 dS.m-1) resulted in a lower flower and stigma production. The highest number of leaf per plant was found when corms treated to P4 and 2 dS.m-1 6 salinity stress condition. Exposure of saffron corn to plasma treatments of 20 minutes showed the most stimulating effect regarding the flower phenology and stigmas yield in saffron under salinity stress. Ceramic dental restorative materials have growing popularity, albeit their brittle and stochastic nature are acknowledged shortcomings that impact the prosthesis lifespan. The mechanical performance of ceramics is dominated by the constitutional microstructural and fracture toughness mechanisms, as well as externally applied triggers. Thus, there is ongoing expanding research in the sphere of ceramic material engineering and thermal refinement, addressing concerns regarding toughness, machinability, reliability, stainability, and biodegradation. While the current trend in dental ceramic manufacturing has transitioned from micrometric crystalline sizes to submicrometric and nanometric ranges, there is an unclear understanding of the microstructural implications on ceramic behaviour. Therefore, this review covers the comprehensive characterisation approaches commonly employed in the scientific literature to describe the multifaceted performance aspects as well as clinical-related prerequisites of dental ceramics. A method of digital colorimetric determination of ammonium and nitrate in soils is proposed. The method is based on corresponding photometric procedures of ammonium and nitrate determination after potassium chloride extraction from soil samples. Ammonium is determined as an indophenol dye, and nitrate is determined as an azo dye. The original procedures were modified to overcome the lower sensitivity of the digital colorimetric method. For ammonium determination, the time required for the reaction to proceed completely was studied. Along with the use of a 96-well microplate protected from ambient light by a special frame, mathematical correction of scattered radiation using black ink and taking the images by a scanner in transmission mode without any post-processing, the resulting colorimetric methods proved to provide accuracy and sensitivity close to those of the spectrophotometric method, and the overall analysis speed for tens of samples was even higher. Limits of detection and quantitation for NO3– were 0.42 and 1.4 mg/kg, and for NH4+, they were 1.1 and 3.7 mg/kg, which is lower than for standard methods. Driven by their exceptional optical characteristics, robust chemical stability, and facile bioconjugation, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have emerged as a preferred material for detection and biosensing applications in scientific research. This study involves the development of a simple, rapid, and cost-effective colorimetric immuno-sensing probe to detect aflatoxin B1 and zearalenone using AuNP antibody (AuNP-mAb) conjugates. Anti-toxin antibodies were attached to the AuNPs by using the physical adsorption method. The colorimetric immunosensor developed operates on the principle that the optical properties of the AuNP are very sensitive to aggregation, which can be induced by a critical high salt concentration. Although the presence of antibodies on the AuNP surface inhibits the aggregation, these antibodies bind to the toxin with higher affinity, which leads to exposure of the surface of AuNPs and aggregation in a salt environment. The aggregation triggers a noticeable but variable alteration in color from red to purple and blueish gray, as a result of a red shift in the surface plasmon resonance band of the AuNPs. The extent of the shift is dependent on the toxin exposure dose and can be quantified using a calibration curve through UV–Visible–NIR spectroscopy. The limit of detection using this assay was determined to be as low as 0.15 ng/mL for both zearalenone and aflatoxin B1. The specificity of the prepared immunoprobe was analyzed for a particular mycotoxin in the presence of other mycotoxins. The developed immunoprobe was evaluated for real-world applicability using artificially spiked samples. The research and development of green techniques for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with bioactive plants has gained more attention against toxic chemicals. In this research, the aqueous solution of safflower extract was utilized for the simple, green, and commercial synthesis of AgNPs from AgNO3 solution on the wool yarn. The effect of the amount of extract and AgNO3 on the properties of produced nanoparticles was studied. The analysis of AgNPs by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) system and Ultravioletvisible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy exhibited that the particle size of produced NPs was <57 nm. In addition, the colorimetric data of wool yarn dyed with safflower extract in the presence of different concentrations of AgNO3 solution were also studied. The results showed that the presence of nanoparticles changed the color hue (hᵒ: 86→58), and the absorption of safflower extract on the wool samples increased from 5 to 29. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the color‐matching ability of OMNICHROMA composite, a single‐shade composite, using the CIE L∗a∗b∗ system and determining ΔE values. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, 30 intact premolar teeth were collected, cleaned, and disinfected with 0.5% thymol solution. The teeth were stored in distilled water at 37°C. A putty index calibrated the color assessment sites on buccal and lingual surfaces. Two cavities were prepared, one with 1.25 mm depth (enamel) and another with 2.25 mm depth (dentin), and restored using OMNICHROMA composite resin. The putty index measured the color of the cured composite, and ΔE between the composite and original tooth color was calculated. Statistical analysis: Data analysis included t‐tests, correlation coefficients, and Fisher's exact test (α = 0.05). Results: The mean ΔE was 2.39 in enamel cavities and 2.32 in dentin cavities, both within the clinically acceptable range (<3.3). In enamel cavities, the composite color was darker than the tooth, shifting toward green and blue shades. In dentin cavities, the composite color was lighter than the tooth, with shifts toward green and yellow shades. Color matching was slightly better in dentin cavities, but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.719). Dopamine (DA) is a potent neuromodulator in the brain that affects a wide range of motivated behaviors. Abnormal concentration of DA is related to a variety of diseases. Hence, it is imperative to establish a rapid and precise method for quantifying DA. In this work, we integrate orange-yellow emissive carbon dots (CDs) with target-induced silver deposition on gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), forming gold/silver core-shell nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs), to construct a fluorometric and colorimetric dual-signal sensor for sensitive detection of DA. Au NPs and silver ions (Ag+) have minimal effect on the fluorescence of CDs. DA can reduce the silver ions to Ag(0) on the surface of the Au NPs to form a silver shell, resulting in the blue-shift of the absorbance peak from 520 to 416 nm, which overlaps with the excitation spectrum of CDs. As a result, the system color turns from pink to orange-yellow, and the fluorescence of CDs is quenched due to the strong inner filter effect. The linear range of the colorimetry is 0.5–18 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.41 μM, while the linear range for the fluorometry method is 0.5–14 μM with a LOD of 0.021 μM. This method demonstrates notable advantages including a low detection limit, rapid response time, and straightforward operation in practical samples, showing great potential in biomedical analysis. Background: Circular RNAs (circRNAs), produced by reverse splicing, act as important players in human cancers. We aimed to assess the biological functions of circRNA pituitary homeobox 1 (circ‐PITX1) in non‐small‐cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: qRT‐PCR was employed to determine RNA expression. Biological behaviors of NSCLC cells were assessed by CCK‐8, colony formation, EdU assay, flow cytometry, wound healing, and transwell assays. Glutamine catabolism was examined via the measurement of glutamine consumption, α‐ketoglutarate levels, as well as ATP levels. Protein levels were detected by western blot assays. Dual‐luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assay were performed to reveal the mechanism responsible for circ‐PITX1 regulating NSCLC cell malignancy. The murine xenograft model was established to investigate circ‐PITX1's effect on tumor formation. Results: Circ‐PITX1 was overexpressed in NSCLC tissue samples and cells. Its low expression repressed NSCLC cell proliferation and motility. Moreover, our data revealed its downregulation inhibited glutamine catabolism and tumor formation and promoted cell apoptosis. In addition, circ‐PITX1 bound to miR‐615‐5p, and its inhibitory effect on tumor cellular behaviors could be reversed after decreasing miR‐615‐5p expression. The miRNA targeted E26 transformation specific‐1 (ETS1), whose upregulation abolished miR‐615‐5p overexpression‐induced effects in NSCLC cells. Furthermore, circ‐PITX1 positively modulated ETS1 production through interaction with miR‐615‐5p. Conclusion: Circ‐PITX1 facilitated NSCLC progression via modulating miR‐615‐5p/ETS1 pathway. Background: This study proposes a simple digital image colorimetric method using a smartphone for the quantitative analysis of isoniazid in pharmaceutical medications. The analytical methodology employed in this study involved the utilization of the reaction between isoniazid and FC reagent under alkaline conditions. The chemical reaction led to the creation of a complex with a blue-gray color, exhibiting a peak absorption at a wavelength of 760 nm. An Android application was employed to perform a smartphone-based determination based on separating the captured color into different color channels such as red, blue, green, etc. The experimental procedure involved the utilization of three smartphones for the determination, which was subsequently followed by a comparative analysis of the results obtained from these devices using spectrophotometric measurements. Results: The B channel had the highest level of optimization in terms of analytical parameters. The limits of detection (LOD) were 0.586, 2.478, and 1.396 µg/ml for S1, S2, and S3, respectively, and for the spectrophotometer, it was found to be 0.416 µg/ml. Similarly, LOQs were determined as 1.673, 7.511, 4.232, and 1.302 µg/ml. A %RSD of 1.3 for precision and an LOD of 0.013 g dm−3 were obtained for the spectroscopic method. The % recovery in the accuracy study was found to be 99.69, 101.804, 109.28, and 100.13 for S1, S2, S3, and spectrophotometer, respectively. Featured Application: The multichannel luminaire systems allow a perfect color rendering of art pieces, while preserving them against light photodegradation. The presented lighting system can be applied in architectural heritage and museums. The appropriate preservation and color rendering of paintings and art pieces are a pending subject in architectural heritage, since, in most of the cases, lighting systems are not really focused on the conservation and suitable perception of these heritage resources, due to the limitations of standard LED lamps and lighting configurations. In this context, a multichannel luminaire system is proposed in the case study of the Cathedral of Seville, providing a variable and rich spectral distribution, which allows an excellent color perception linked to the daylight conditions, while the short-wavelength light is minimized in order to reduce photodegradation. Two scenarios are addressed: Museum of the Cathedral and Evangelist Chapel. The multichannel luminaire system is tested by means of subjective surveys and objective procedures (Farnswoth-Munsell and Natural Color System tests). The results show that the proposed spectral distribution of the multichannel system provides a better color discrimination in comparison with typical lighting systems, as well as a better preservation, defining a suitable lighting technology for architectural heritage. Background: Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women. Its pathogenesis includes several pathways in cancer proliferation, apoptosis, and metastasis. Some clinical data have indicated the association between coffee consumption and decreased cancer risk. However, little data is available on the effect of coffee on breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Methods: In our study, we assessed the effect of Turkish coffee and Fridamycin-H on different pathways in breast cancer, including apoptosis, proliferation, and oxidative stress. A human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) was treated for 48 h with either coffee extract (5% or 10 v/v) or Fridamycin-H (10 ng/ml). Ehrlich solid tumors were induced in mice for in vivo modeling of breast cancer. Mice with Ehrlich solid tumors were treated orally with coffee extract in drinking water at a final concentration (v/v) of either 3%, 5%, or 10% daily for 21 days. Protein expression levels of Caspase-8 were determined in both in vitro and in vivo models using ELISA assay. Moreover, P-glycoprotein and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) protein expression levels were analyzed in the in vitro model. β-catenin protein expression was analyzed in tumor sections using immunohistochemical analysis. In addition, malondialdehyde (MDA) serum levels were analyzed using colorimetry. Results: Both coffee extract and Fridamycin-H significantly increased Caspase-8, P-glycoprotein, and PPAR-γ protein levels in MCF-7 cells. Consistently, all doses of in vivo coffee treatment induced a significant increase in Caspase-8 and necrotic zones and a significant decrease in β- catenin, MDA, tumor volume, tumor weight, and viable tumor cell density. Because the success of treating Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) mastitis depends on numerous factors, different cure rates have been reported. Since biofilm production is one of the most critical factors for pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance, this study aimed to assess the ability of S. aureus to produce biofilm and compare antibiotic resistance in biofilm-positive and negative S. aureus strains. Milk samples (n=110) were collected from two herds of cows and subjected to bacteriological analysis. PCR (nucA gene) was used to detect accurately the cause of mastitis. Colorimetric microtiter plate assay was used to evaluate the biofilm formation capacity of the strains. The agar disk diffusion technique was utilised to specify the susceptibility to common antibiotics, including ampicillin, enrofloxacin, tylosin, penicillin, tetracycline, lincomycin, erythromycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, oxacillin, ceftriaxone, methicillin, vancomycin, and cefazolin. From isolated S. aureus strains in this study, 31.8% were able to produce biofilm. In general, compared to biofilm-negative isolates, a higher percentage of biofilm-positive strains showed antibiotic resistance to antibiotics used, except for tylosin, cefazolin, and enrofloxacin. Resistance or susceptibility to penicillin, lincomycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, oxacillin, methicillin and vancomycin was significantly distinct (P<0.05) between biofilm-positive and negative strains. Positive and negative biofilm groups demonstrated the highest sensitivity against enrofloxacin and cefazolin - most of biofilm-positive (85.7% and 77.1%, respectively) and biofilm-negative isolates (75.4% and 63.1%, respectively) were susceptible to these antibiotics. The present investigation revealed that a high percentage of S. aureus isolates causing bovine mastitis in Iran can form biofilms, so a practical therapeutic approach should be considered. Color plays a significant role in consumer decisions about food products, influencing preferences and choices and eliciting positive or negative associations. This study aimed to investigate the impact of color on dietitian food preferences, using selected tomato juices as an example. This study was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the color of the tomato juices was evaluated using a Tri-Color SF80 spectrophotometer. In the second stage, the serialization method performed sensory analysis among dietitians. Results showed that dietitians pay special attention to the color of food products. Spectrophotometric analysis indicated that not all tested pairs of juices had color differences noticeable to an inexperienced observer. There was no clear correlation between the specific color parameters and the choices made by dietitians. These findings suggest that while color is an important factor in consumer preferences, it is not the sole determinant, highlighting the complexity of consumer decision-making processes and providing valuable insights for product marketing strategies. The research paper investigates the impact of fire on concrete structures, focusing on evaluating the temperatures reached during the fire using the colorimetry test method. It examines color changes as indicators of temperature, assesses the extent of damage to building components, and determines the depth of carbon penetration within the structure. The study employs various assessment techniques, including rebound hammer test, colorimetry test to evaluate structural integrity post-fire. Key findings include the correlation between color changes and temperature, the effectiveness of rebound hammer tests in assessing structural integrity, and the importance of considering aggregate type in color analysis. The study was conducted using prescribed nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques. For the investigation of the fire-damaged building, the Rebound number (RN) values were used to correlate the in-situ compressive strength of concrete using the standard curves developed in the laboratory for this purpose. Moreover, the approximate temperature to which any structural element had reached was determined approximately by colorimetry test. Further the residual compressive strength of concrete of these elements was also derived applying the reduction factors in Eurocode 2 for concrete exposed to varied temperatures. The maximum percentage difference between these two sets of values was 15.46% except for one case. The residual strength values of concrete of the structural elements paved a way for satisfactory evaluation of the need of retrofitting of these elements, Overall, the research offers practical insights for assessing the residual compressive strength of concrete of structural elements of fire-damaged concrete structures by two different techniques thus aiding in decision-making for rehabilitation or reconstruction efforts of such structures. Composite resins are the material of choice for direct restorations, and their success depends mainly on their color stability, since discoloration causes color mismatch, and consequent patient dissatisfaction. A single- and a multi-shade resin were compared in order to evaluate their pigmentation after immersion in staining substances and to investigate the effect of the polymerization time on their color stability. Two-hundred-and-forty composite specimens were created, half made of a single-shade (Group ONE, n = 120) and half of a multi-shade composite (Group OXP, n = 120). Each group was further divided into ONE30 (n = 60) and OXP30 (n = 60), polymerized for 30″, and ONE80 (n = 60) and OXP80 (n = 60), polymerized for 80″. Randomly, the specimens were immersed in turmeric solution, soy sauce, energy drink, or artificial saliva. By means of a spectrophotometer, ΔE00 and WId were calculated at 24 h (T0), at 7 (T1), and 30 (T2) days. Single-shade composites showed statistically significant differences in color change from the turmeric solution, energy drink, and soy sauce than the multi-shade composites (p < 0.005), showing a higher discoloration potential. The polymerization time did not have significative effects on color stability. This study focuses on the environmental colors of the Historic Center of Macau, seeking pathways to develop an urban color system to construct a high-quality urban aesthetic environment and enhance the overall visual image of the city. Based on Lenclos's color geography and Shingo Yoshida's environmental color planning method, this study conducted on-site color measurement, extraction, photographic documentation, numerical analysis, and color cataloging of the architecture, plazas, landscapes, and primary public facilities in Macau's historical district. Through comprehensive environmental color investigation and analyses, the study aimed to construct a color system for Macau's historical district, finally identifying 60 characteristic colors emblematic of the area. This study also uncovered issues, such as the lack of a unified management mechanism for environmental colors, insufficient coherence and correlation among regional colors, or the scarcity of striking colors. Ultimately, the proposed systematic approach to urban color can offer effective concepts for planning, design, and management, facilitating the creation of color expressions that align with Macau's unique characteristics and thereby elevating the city's overall visual image. Purpose: This study aims to assess the diagnostic accuracy of non‐culture‐based methodologies for detecting microorganisms in chronic wounds. Methods: We systematically reviewed studies that evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of alternative tests in chronic wound samples, excluding studies focused on animal samples or unrelated conditions. The search encompassed PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science databases, employing the QUADAS‐2 tool for risk of bias assessment. Our search included the PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science databases, and we assessed the risk of bias using the QUADAS‐2 tool. A meta‐analysis was conducted on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and colorimetric methods to determine sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio, and summary receiver‐operating characteristic (sROC) curves using a random‐effects model. For methods not suitable for quantitative synthesis, a narrative synthesis was performed. Results: Nineteen studies involving various types of chronic wounds were analysed, revealing diverse diagnostic methods including fluorescence, PCR, colorimetry, voltammetry, electronic nose, biosensors, enzymatic methods, staining and microscopy. Combining fluorescence with clinical signs and symptoms (CSS) versus culture showed significant accuracy. Colorimetry demonstrated low sensitivity but high specificity, with a diagnostic odds ratio of 6.3. PCR generally exhibited good accuracy, although significant heterogeneity was noted, even in subgroup analyses. Conclusions: This study identified a broad spectrum of diagnostic approaches, highlighting the superior diagnostic accuracy achieved when microbiological analysis is combined with clinical assessments. However, the heterogeneity and methodological variations across studies present challenges in meta‐analysis. Abstract Detecting glucose levels is crucial for diabetes patients as it enables timely and effective management, preventing complications and promoting overall health. In this endeavor, we have designed a novel, affordable point-of-care diagnostic device utilizing microfluidic principles, a smartphone camera, and established laboratory colorimetric methods for accurate glucose estimation. Our proposed microfluidic device comprises layers of adhesive poly-vinyl films stacked on a poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) base sheet, with micro-channel contours precision-cut using a cutting printer. Employing the gold standard glucose-oxidase/peroxidase reaction on this microfluidic platform, we achieve enzymatic glucose determination. The resulting colored complex, formed by phenol and 4-aminoantipyrine in the presence of hydrogen peroxide generated during glucose oxidation, is captured at various glucose concentrations using a smartphone camera. Raw images are processed and utilized as input data for a 2-D convolutional neural network (CNN) deep learning classifier, demonstrating an impressive 95% overall accuracy against new images. The glucose predictions done by CNN are compared with ISO 15197:2013/2015 gold standard norms. Furthermore, the classifier exhibits outstanding precision, recall, and F1 score of 94%, 93%, and 93%, respectively, as validated through our study, showcasing its exceptional predictive capability. Next, a user-friendly smartphone application named “GLUCOLENS AI” was developed to capture images, perform image processing, and communicate with cloud server containing the CNN classifier. The developed CNN model can be successfully used as a pre-trained model for future glucose concentration predictions.

Aim: The precise estimation and replication of skin color are crucial for maxillofacial prosthesis. The study aimed to evaluate facial skin color with a colorimeter and suggest a skin shade guide and formula for color estimation. Settings and Design: An observational study conducted in the department of prosthodontics. Materials and Methods: Study was conducted on 368 individuals of Indian origin in age range of 20–45 years. The facial skin color was assessed in malar regions using SkinColorCatch colorimetric device and individual topography angle (ITA) and CIELAB L*a*b* values were noted. Statistical Analysis Used: K-means clustering was utilized to propose a shade guide for maxillofacial prosthesis with 24 skin shades. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to propose a formula to estimate skin shade of the individuals. Results: Based on cluster analysis, 368 subjects were divided into three clusters with similar characteristic as Cluster 1 with dark skin color in 88 (23.91%) subjects, Cluster 2 with medium skin color in 224 (60.87%) subjects, and Cluster 3 with light skin color in 56 (15.22%) subjects. The mean ITA and L*a*b* values for cluster 1 were −47.04° ±14.77°, 34.53 ± 4.31, 8.55 ± 2, 11.42 ± 3.7033, respectively. The mean ITA angle and L*a*b* values for Cluster 2 were 4.29° ±11.34° 51.67 ± 3.42, 8.79 ± 3.13, 21.36 ± 2.38, respectively. The mean ITA and L*a*b* values for Cluster 3 were 34.65 ± 4.29°, 62.66 ± 3.08, 6.53 ± 1.79, 17.73 ± 2.39, respectively. The proposed shade guide comprised a total of 24 different shades that were categorized into three primary colors according to three distinct clusters, each of which was further broken down into eight subclusters containing various shades within each cluster. Logistic regression analysis gave an equation as follows: Y =12.43 + 0.186X (Y = Predicted skin color, X = ITA angle). Conclusions: Twenty-four facial skin shade tabs have been proposed based on ITA angle and CIELAB values. This comprehensive approach to categorize the shades will ensure a detailed and organized system for selecting and matching colors in maxillofacial prosthesis.

Abstract Background This study proposes a simple digital image colorimetric method using a smartphone for the quantitative analysis of isoniazid in pharmaceutical medications. The analytical methodology employed in this study involved the utilization of the reaction between isoniazid and FC reagent under alkaline conditions. The chemical reaction led to the creation of a complex with a blue-gray color, exhibiting a peak absorption at a wavelength of 760 nm. An Android application was employed to perform a smartphone-based determination based on separating the captured color into different color channels such as red, blue, green, etc. The experimental procedure involved the utilization of three smartphones for the determination, which was subsequently followed by a comparative analysis of the results obtained from these devices using spectrophotometric measurements. Results The B channel had the highest level of optimization in terms of analytical parameters. The limits of detection (LOD) were 0.586, 2.478, and 1.396 µg/ml for S1, S2, and S3, respectively, and for the spectrophotometer, it was found to be 0.416 µg/ml. Similarly, LOQs were determined as 1.673, 7.511, 4.232, and 1.302 µg/ml. A %RSD of 1.3 for precision and an LOD of 0.013 g dm−3 were obtained for the spectroscopic method. The % recovery in the accuracy study was found to be 99.69, 101.804, 109.28, and 100.13 for S1, S2, S3, and spectrophotometer, respectively. Conclusion The colorimetric results from smartphone application are similar to those from spectrophotometric analyses.

Noroviruses are highly contagious and are one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Due to a lack of effective antiviral therapies, there is a need to diagnose and surveil norovirus infections to implement quarantine protocols and prevent large outbreaks. Currently, the gold standard of diagnosis uses reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), but PCR can have limited availability. Here, we propose a combination of a tunable peptide substrate and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to colorimetrically detect the Southampton norovirus 3C-like protease (SV3CP), a key protease in viral replication. Careful design of the substrate employs a zwitterionic peptide with opposite charged moieties on the C- and N- termini to induce a rapid color change visible to the naked eye; thus, this color change is indicative of SV3CP activity. This work expands on existing zwitterionic peptide strategies for protease detection by systematically evaluating the effects of lysine and arginine on nanoparticle charge screening. We also determine a limit of detection for SV3CP of 28.0 nM with comparable results in external breath condensate, urine, and fecal matter for 100 nM of SV3CP. The key advantage of this system is its simplicity and accessibility, thus making it an attractive tool for qualitative point-of-care diagnostics.

Image color difference (CD) measurement, a crucial concept in color science and imaging technology, aims to quantify the perceived difference between two colors. Most widely recognized CD formulae are recommended by the Commission Internationale de l'Èclairage (CIE), which are tailored to homogeneous color patches and may not generalize effectively to images encompassing diverse content. Developing effective CD metrics for natural images remains an active and ongoing area of research. Drawing inspiration from the design principles found in CIE-recommended formulae, which place a premium on achieving a perceptually uniform color space, we posit that an ideal color space should adhere to the following criteria: (1) Characterizing any color pixel with three degrees of freedom, which is necessary and sufficient; (2) The visual distance between two pixels is proportional to the Euclidean distance, i.e., perceptual uniformity; (3) The transformation between color spaces is inherently reversible and has low computational complexity. To satisfy these criteria, we investigate to leverage deep invertible neural network (DINNs) to learn an invertible coordinate transform, in which the Euclidean distance is employed to compute the CD on a pixel-by-pixel basis within the transformed color space and subsequently average the resulting CD map to obtain the global CD for a pair of images. By using DINNs, the acquired coordinate transform can maintain three-dimensional properties and mathematical invertibility. The resulting metric, referred to as CD-iNet, is end-to-end optimized on color patch datasets and image datasets simultaneously. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments on smartphone photograph datasets demonstrate the superiority of CD-iNet over existing metrics. Besides, CD-iNet can produce competitive local CD maps without requiring dense supervision and be robust against geometric distortions. More importantly, the transformed color space exhibits reasonable characteristics of perceptual uniformity, e.g., low cross-contamination between color attributes. Abstract The color of pyroclasts is fundamental, because it reflects various magma properties and eruption processes, including particle morphology, chemistry, and petrological characteristics. However, deriving the componentry ratio (CR) of pyroclasts for ongoing eruption monitoring remains challenging due to the lack of a robust quantitative standard. The derivation of the CR, as well as other petrological analyses, is too laborious and time-consuming to introduce as a sustainable monitoring method. To address this, we employed spectroscopic colorimetry to rapidly and quantitatively describe eruptive product colors, enabling CR derivation based on clear, objective standards for ash particle classification. Through color spectroscopy of bulk and sieved ash samples, we analyzed the major size fraction for time-series samples during the waxing stage of the 2017–2018 Shinmoe-dake eruption in Kirishima volcano, Southwest Japan. Our findings reveal that the color changes in bulk ash systematically changed with the evolution of componentry. This temporal color change was due to an increase in the amount of vesicular particles with clear glass against dark angular lava particles, as well as a grain size change, which we interpret as an indication of a transition from phreatic/phreatomagmatic to magmatic eruption. Subsequently, the color of the ash changed when the amount of different lava particles increased gradually, coinciding with a shift toward a more dominant effusion of lava. As the lava effusion continued, a slight reddening of the ash, indiscernible to the naked eye, was clearly detected by the spectrometer before the onset of intermittent Vulcanian eruptions. We interpreted this reddening as oxidation resulting from decreased ascent speed and caprock formation, which accumulates overpressure for Vulcanian explosions. These results highlight the potential of rapid, objective color value and componentry derivation for sustainable quasi-real-time monitoring of ongoing eruption materials. Graphical Abstract

Abstract A fast eco-friendly colorimetric method was developed for the determination of Tobramycin in drug substance, ophthalmic formulations, and spiked human plasma using silver nanoparticles optical sensor. Even though tobramycin is non-UV–visible absorbing, the developed method is based on measuring the absorbance quenching of silver nanoparticles resulting from the interaction with tobramycin. Different factors affecting the absorbance intensity were studied as; silver nanoparticle concentration, pH, buffer type, and reaction time using quality by design approach. Validation of the proposed method was performed according to ICH guidelines and was found to be accurate, precise, and sensitive. The linearity range of tobramycin was 0.35–4.0 μg/mL. The optical sensor was successfully applied for the determination of Tobramycin in ophthalmic formulations and spiked human plasma without pre-treatment. Additionally, the binding between Tobramycin and PVP- capped silver nanoparticles was studied using molecular docking software. The method was assessed and compared to colorimetric reported methods for the green character using Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI) and Analytical GREEnness calculator (AGREE) tools and found to be greener.

The study concerns the behavior of optical and colorimetric properties of cadmium telluride semiconductor colloidal quantum dots covered with silica shell (CdTe/SiO2, core/shell) in an external constant electric field has been studied. To date, the electric field is known to lead mainly to quenching and red shift of the luminescence spectra of quantum dots; however, in most of the corresponding studies only the behavior of band-edge luminescence is considered. In this work, in addition to the luminescence due to interband transitions, the effect of the electric field on the trap-related luminescences of core/shell quantum dots is studied. Semiconductor nanocrystals were synthesized by colloidal chemistry methods. The product mixture was a solution of quantum dots in an aqueous medium. To investigate the optical properties of CdTe/SiO2 nanoparticles in an external electric field, a series of samples was fabricated on the basis of an optically passive cellulose film, in the pores of which quantum dots were embedded. The final sample was a cellulose film with quantum dots sandwiched between two glasses with transparent indium tin oxide electrodes. The strength of the constant electric field applied to such structures reached 140 kV/cm. Photoluminescence spectra of the investigated nanostructures were recorded using a CCD spectrometer. As a result of the experiments it was found that the presence and subsequent increase of the external electric field leads to quenching of the intensity of both band-edge and traprelated photoluminescence of quantum dots. This fact is associated with a decrease in the overlap between electron and hole wave functions under the action of the electric field. It is also shown that at moderate field strength there is a slight increase in the total photoluminescence intensity. This observation can be related to impeded charge carrier trapping. The demonstrated quenching of luminescence intensity is also consistent with the results of other authors who have shown a decrease in the absorption of quantum dots in external electric fields. The stability of colorimetric characteristics of the spherical nanoparticles in an external electric field has been demonstrated. The results of the study can be used for development of optoelectronic devices based on CdTe/SiO2 nanoparticles.

Aim: The aim of this study is to Quantify sialic acid for oral cancer diagnosis using different method using densitometric analysis. Background: Early detection of OSCC is critical for improving survival rates and reducing morbidity, which has prompted researchers to look for potential biomarkers to aid in early diagnosis. Saliva is an excellent diagnostic tool due to its noninvasive nature. Sialic acid levels in saliva have been found to be higher in cancer patients. Hypersialylation is associated with poor prognosis and accelerated cancer progression, as well as immune escape, tumor growth and spread, angiogenesis, and resistance to apoptosis and treatment. This study addresses the imperative need for adaptive, effective, and non-invasive strategies in the diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer, emphasising the importance of early detection for improved prognosis. This study introduces various methods for quantify levels of sialic acid in saliva, including resorcinol and orcinol assays, using colorimetric and densitometric assays. Material and Method: In this study, sialic acid detection methods have been standardized using standards as well as spent media from cancer cell lines to develop noninvasive diagnostic tools for early detection. Two methods used for the detection of sialic acid Resorcinal and Orcinol method by densitometric analysis using Image J software. Results: The study has successfully quantified sialic acid from spent media and saliva using resorcinol and orcinol method by densitometric analysis. Conclusion: In this study we aim to develop a reliable and cost-effective method for quantification of sialic acid using Image j software. The approach presents a non-invasive and efficient alternative for early cancer diagnosis showcasing its potential impact on advancing diagnostic technologies.

Abstract Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a manmade chemical that is widely present in the environment and is mostly used as a wood preservative. Therefore, to conduct remediation studies, it is imperative to determine the most effective PCP analytical technique. PCP can be analyzed using a variety of analytical tools, including non-destructible methods like X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and electrochemical sensors (EC), destructible tools like gas chromatography (GC), thin layer chromatography (TLC), colorimetry, ultraviolet–visible and infrared spectroscopy (UV–vis/IR), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). the colorimetric approach is less recommended because of its low sensitivity and precision, whereas TLC offers superior recovery rates and precision but is expensive, takes longer, and is unable to resolve complicated combinations. Higher recovery rates, sensitivity, precision, and superior separation are all offered by HPLC; however, its effectiveness is impacted by time, money, and solvent compatibility. The most favored destructible approach is GC because it is efficient in terms of both cost and time and offers superior precision and separation. Although XRF is frequently used in the wood industry to test PCP in treated wood and treating solutions, scientific research has avoided using it because of its high cost and ability to identify chemicals based only on their elemental composition—in the case of PCP, it is chloride. Among all methods, EC is shown to be more dependable than the other methods listed because it is extremely specialized, less expensive, and offers a faster response. It is possible to make more changes to the current analytical techniques, such as enhancing extraction techniques, creating a universal HPLC column, developing more affordable and high-precision EC electrodes, and evaluating a larger variety of samples from different matrices. This review has shed light on the many analytical tools available for determining PCP and the knowledge gaps in the field of study.

Background: Failure of treatment with gemcitabine in most cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) patients is due to drug resistance. The therapeutic potential of natural plant secondary compounds with minimal toxicity, such as cannabidiol (CBD), is a promising line of investigation in gemcitabine-resistant CCA. We aim to investigate the effects of CBD on gemcitabine-resistant CCA (KKU-213BGemR) cells in vitro and in vivo. Materials: In vitro, cell proliferation, colony formation, apoptosis and cell cycle arrest were assessed using MTT assay, clonogenicity assay and flow cytometry. The effect of CBD on ROS production was evaluated using the DCFH-DA fluorescent probe. The mechanism exerted by CBD on ER stress-associated apoptosis was investigated by western blot analysis. A gemcitabine-resistant CCA xenograft model was also used and the expression of PCNA and CHOP were evaluated by immunohistochemical analysis. Results: The IC50 values of CBD for KKU-213BGemR cells ranged from 19.66 to 21.05 µM. For a non-cancerous immortalized fibroblast cell line, relevant values were 18.29 to 19.21 µM. CBD suppressed colony formation by KKU-213BGemR cells in a dose-dependent manner in the range of 10 to 30 µM. CBD at 30 µM significantly increased apoptosis at early (16.37%) (P = 0.0024) and late (1.8%) stages (P < 0.0001), for a total of 18.17% apoptosis (P = 0.0017), in part by increasing ROS production (P < 0.0001). Multiphase cell cycle arrest significantly increased at G0/G1 with CBD 10 and 20 µM (P = 0.004 and P = 0.017), and at G2/M with CBD 30 µM (P = 0.005). CBD treatment resulted in increased expression of ER stress-associated apoptosis proteins, including p-PERK, BiP, ATF4, CHOP, BAX, and cytochrome c. In xenografted mouse, CBD significantly suppressed tumors at 10 and 40 mg/kg·Bw (P = 0.0007 and P = 0.0278, respectively), which was supported by an increase in CHOP, but a decrease in PCNA expression in tumor tissues (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: The results suggest that CBD exhibits potent anti-cancer activity against gemcitabine-resistant CCA in vitro and in vivo, in part via ER stress-mediated mechanisms. Objectives: The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different preparation designs on the mean colour change (ΔE*), marginal adaptation, fracture resistance, and fracture types of maxillary and mandibular premolar endocrowns (ECs). Methodology: A total of 40 extracted maxillary and mandibular premolars were treated endodontically, and each type was subdivided according to the remaining axial height (remaining walls on all surfaces; 2–4 mm) and 2 mm inside the pulp chamber. Specimens were immersed in coffee for 14 days, ΔE* was determined, marginal adaptation was observed, fracture forces test was conducted, and the samples were examined visually at 10× magnification to evaluate failure type and identify fracture origin. The data were entered and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences, and significance between and within groups was evaluated through ANOVA. The p-value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The ΔE* values of the maxillary premolar with 2 mm axial height were the highest (6.8 ± 0.89 units), whereas the lowest value was observed in the mandibular premolar with 4 mm axial height (2.9 ± 0.53 units). Significant differences (p < 0.05) in teeth and design were observed. The marginal adaptation of the mandibular premolar with 4 mm axial height was the highest (30.20 ± 1.53 μm), whereas the lowest marginal adaptation was observed in the maxillary premolar with 2 mm axial height (14.38 ± 0.99 μm), and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The maximum fracture force was observed in maxillary premolars with 2 mm axial height (2248.15 ± 134.74 N), and no statistically significant difference (p = 0.07) was observed between maxillary and mandibular premolars at 4 mm axial height. Conclusion: The recorded ΔE* values of the ECs were within clinically acceptable values or slightly higher, and the marginal adaption values were within acceptable and recommended clinical values in µm. EC preparation with 2 mm axial height in both arches recorded the highest fracture forces. This study aimed to compare the color changes in two different orthodontic clear aligner systems after submersion in various beverages for 14 days. The tested aligner systems were Taglus Premium made of polyethylene terephthalate glycol (the TAG group) and CA® Prodin+ made of a transparent copolyester and a thermoplastic elastomer (the PRO group). A total of 56 samples were firstly divided into two groups according to the tested system—TAG and PRO. Each group was subsequently divided in four subgroups according to immersion solution: A—artificial saliva, B—cola, C—coffee, D—red wine. Color measurements were performed on Days 1, 7 and 14 using a portable colorimeter and the CIE L*a*b* system. The obtained results showed significant color changes in both materials when exposed to coffee and red wine (p > 0.05). Samples in the PRO group showed a greater susceptibility to discoloration (higher ΔE values) when compared to the TAG group after submersion in cola (p = 0.025), coffee (p = 0.005) and red wine (p = 0.041) solutions. Statistical analysis revealed that all of the color parameters ΔL*, Δa*, Δb* and ΔE of both tested materials were affected by submersion in coffee solution for 14 days. In conclusion, the CA® Pro+ aligner system is more prone to staining compared to the Taglus material after submersion for 14 days in cola, coffee and red wine solutions. Submersion for 14 days in coffee solution alters all of the color parameters (ΔL, Δa, Δb and ΔE) of both tested aligner materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
