La recherche-action participative (RAP) est une approche qui permet de combiner les réflexions et les efforts de différents acteurs, universitaires, acteurs locaux et experts externes, afin de chercher des solutions à des problèmes concrets tout en produisant des réflexions applicables dans un contexte plus large. Cet article émet l’hypothèse que la RAP est une méthode de recherche pertinente en milieu rural mexicain et applicable au tourisme alternatif en raison du potentiel de transformation sociale des processus participatifs. L’étude de cas réalisée à Yokdzonot (Yucatán, Mexique) avec la coopérative Zaaz Koolen Haa illustre ce point de vue tout en mettant en relief les défis d’une telle approche. Un travail de cinq ans, mobilisant une centaine d’acteurs, a été mené dans cette communauté et a permis d’expérimenter différents outils de la RAP, d’aboutir à des résultats à court et moyen terme comportant des diagnostics, des prises de décision et des changements organisationnels, ainsi que de produire des projections pour la gestion de l’initiative de tourisme alternatif. Ce projet de RAP a permis entre autres de valoriser les vertus des communautés d’apprentissage en contextes interculturels. Les difficultés rencontrées sont attribuées en partie au contexte particulier de la communauté dans sa relation au tourisme, mais elles permettent aussi d’évoquer des défis récurrents dans le cadre de la RAP. Participatory action research (PAR) is an approach that combines the reflections and efforts of different actors, academics, local stakeholders, and external experts, in order to seek solutions to concrete problems while producing reflections that are applicable in a broader context. This paper hypothesizes that PAR is a relevant research method in rural Mexico and applicable to alternative tourism because of the social transformation potential of participatory processes. The case study conducted in Yokdzonot (Yucatán, Mexico) with the Zaaz Koolen Haa cooperative illustrates this point of view while also highlighting the challenges of such an approach. A five-year project, involving about 100 actors, was carried out in this community and made it possible to experiment with different PAR tools, to achieve short- and medium-term results, including diagnoses, decision making, and organizational changes, and to produce projections for the management of the alternative tourism initiative. Among other things, this PAR project helped to highlight the virtues of learning communities in intercultural contexts. The difficulties encountered are attributed in part to the particular context of the community in its relationship to tourism, but they also make it possible to highlight recurring challenges in the PAR framework.

Tourism development provides a unique context for studying guanxi in acquaintance society in rural areas in China. Taking the case of Moon village from the perspective of guanxi, this study conducted a qualitative study to analyze the structural characteristics of the semi-acquaintance society in the tourism context. A buffer guanxi circle develops when strangers immerse themselves into an acquaintance-based society through social interaction, where affection and reasoning define the boundary, guanxi and the interests on which the social consensus is based, as well as the elite and collective actions vitalizing the community. These findings on how the semi-acquaintance society contributes to guanxi imply a co-governance structure for informal relations in governance in community-based rural tourism.

The COVID-19 pandemic has driven the rapid evolution and digitization of different tourism sectors through Industry 4.0. However, Community-based Rural Tourism (CRT) has not experienced the same technological advancement. Thus, considering tourism as a powerful socioeconomic driver, this research is based on the relevance of the CRT for the development of rural areas through job creation, preservation of historical-cultural and architectural heritage, and appreciation of the local market. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to present a concept development model of an intelligent digital platform (IDP), where tourism products and services are visualized, articulated, and integrated with the different actors of the CRT, offering a personalized tourist experience. The concept was developed based on Business Process Management and Business Model Canvas (BMC). Thus, through meetings and interviews, it was possible to extract essential information to obtain the necessary know-how for the development of the concept. It was concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic has established a new business scenario, intensifying and accelerating the use of digital tools and ICTs in several sectors, including tourism. However, the use of ICTs in CRT is still incipient. As Peru is a country where rural tourism has a strong tradition, but there are no specific platforms for CRT, which makes the broad dissemination of rural experiences difficult, a BMC template has been developed to integrate the expected objectives, and the application of the proposed framework serves as a guide for other platforms with different niches markets in the tourism sector.

Japan became a super-ageing society in 2005, with rural Japan becoming extremely super-aged. This paper investigated how a rural community conducts tourism activity and how it copes with challenges through studying a community-based rural tourism activity in Chiba. By defining community-based rural tourism as using a bonding type of social capital in the local community, this paper explored the advantages and limitations of this type of social capital when the social capital becomes older. Specifically, it was revealed that community-based rural tourism has done well from aspects of job and income generation, increases in self-confidence and local pride, and to a certain extent coping with the impact of unexpected natural disasters. On the other hand, transferring these activities to the younger generation while maintaining the community-based decision-making system will be challenging. Thus, there comes a time when the use of the traditional bonding social capital within the local community must be expanded toward a more open, wider, and new network beyond the local community.

L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser, à partir d’une vision externe, les conditions préexistantes à échelle locale-régionale d’un territoire rural au Mexique, le Bajo Balsas, en vue de l’intégration hypothétique d’une activité de tourisme alternatif. L’analyse porte sur les aspects externes au territoire d’accueil à prendre en compte avant l’introduction d’une initiative touristique, et sur les conditions intrinsèques de celui-ci. Les résultats montrent que le territoire possède des aptitudes spécifiques pour mettre en œuvre une initiative de tourisme alternatif telle que la capacité d’organisation collective locale, l’existence d’un processus de développement plus ample ainsi que d’une complémentarité de ressources naturelles et culturelles intéressante. Cependant, l’étude révèle également de nombreuses restrictions comme l’image négative de la région ainsi que le manque de connexion et d’infrastructure. À partir des résultats obtenus, des recommandations ont été formulées à l’intention des acteurs impliqués dans le processus de développement concernant la mise en œuvre du tourisme alternatif. The aim of this article is to analyse, from an external point of view, the pre-existent conditions at a local-regional level of a rural territory in Mexico, the Bajo Balsas, regarding the hypothetic integration of a community based tourism (CBT) activity. The analysis is about the external aspects of the host territory to be considered before the introduction of an activity of tourism, and about its intrinsic conditions. The results show that the territory does have specific aptitudes to implement a CBT activity such as the local and collective organizational capacity, the existence of a larger process of development and an interesting complementarity of natural and cultural resources. Nevertheless, the study also reveals numerous restrictions such as the negative image of the region and the lack of connexion and local infrastructure. Based on the results, some recommendations have been formulated at the attention of the actors implied in the development process and in the implementation of the CBT initiative.

Community-based rural tourism in Costa Rica is an advanced stage of ecotourism, under which tourism development is led by families and local communities, who assume responsibility for protecting and capitalising on their natural and cultural heritage. At the national level, the sector is articulated through two networks, Red Ecoturística COOprena R.L. and Asociación Comunitaria de Turismo Rural , who conduct support and promotion programmes aimed at member cooperatives and associations. In order to gain insight into how the sector operates, this article identifies and breaks down by type the main local community-based rural tourism associations, and, based on an analysis of over 50 cases, offers a profile of the main characteristics of current rural tourism initiatives. All of the above should enable an enhanced understanding of the mechanisms and factors that determine the success or failure of any given project.Le tourisme rural au Costa Rica représente une étape avancée de l'écotourisme, donc il incorpore comme le protagoniste de son développement aux communautés locales, qui deviennent responsables pour protéger et mettre en valeur économique le patrimoine naturel et culturel. Au niveau national le secteur s'articule dans deux réseaux: le réseau COOprena R.L. et l'Association Communautaire du Tourisme Rural, qui développent des programmes d'appui et de la promotion dirigés vers les associations et les coopératives membres. Dans l'objectif d'approfondir dans la connaissance du fonctionnement du secteur, dans cet article ils ont été identifiés et classifiés par des typologies les principales associations locales de tourisme rural communautaire et, à partir d'une analyse de plus de 50 cas, les principales caractéristiques profilent. Tous cela doit permettre de comprendre mieux les mécanismes et facteurs qu'ils permettent ou ils compliquent le succès d'une initiative locale. El turismo rural en Costa Rica representa una etapa avanzada del ecoturismo, pues incorpora como protagonista de su desarrollo a las comunidades locales, que se convierten en los encargados de proteger y poner en valor económico el patrimonio natural y cultural. A nivel nacional el sector se articula en dos redes: la Red COOprena R.L. y la Asociación Comunitaria de Turismo Rural, quienes desarrollan programas de apoyo y promoción dirigidos a las asociaciones y cooperativas socias. Con el objetivo de profundizar en el conocimiento del funcionamiento del sector, en este artículo se han identificando y clasificado por tipologías las principales asociaciones locales de turismo rural comunitario y, a partir de un análisis de más de 50 casos, se perfilan las principales características. Todo ello debe permitir entender mejor los mecanismos y factores que permiten o dificultan el éxito de una iniciativa local.

An enthusiastic discourse about suitability of community-based tourism (CBT) has been promoted in Mexico as a way of revitalizing rural areas. Nevertheless, a review of experiences indicates that, in most cases, these have not shown the expected success. The objective of this research was to develop an ex-ante assessment in a rural area of tropical dry lands in Mexico where CBT has not been introduced yet, using a multi-scalar, systemic and community-based approach. The intervention focused on the paradigm of the action research and on the soft system methodology. This research aimed a double contribution, social and academic: building a process of cognitive construction and social learning that on the one hand allows the facilitator to use results to produce scientific knowledge, and on the other allows local people to gain new information adapted to their situation. Results showed the necessity to analyse before the introduction of any tourist activity the ex ante conditions of the territory and the local visions of concerned actors that influence directly the construction of a tourist space. This work suggest that the construction process of a CBT initiative and the mechanism that are created, must be studied with more attention., Le tourisme est promu au Mexique comme une solution au développement des territoires ruraux. Cependant, force est de constater que ce discours résulte d'une approche limitée et trompeuse des notions de développement, réduction de la pauvreté et de conservation des ressources naturelles. À partir d'une approche systémique, multiscalaire et participative, ce travail de recherche analyse les conditions d'un territoire pour l'introduction du tourisme rural communautaire (TRC) dans un processus de développement à échelle locale-régionale. Le TRC est conçu comme partie intégrante d'un processus de changement social depuis la base dans lequel les individus et les institutions collectives en sont le moteur. La méthodologie se situe dans le domaine de la recherche-action qui se base sur un modèle d'intervention capable à la fois de produire des connaissances sur l'objet de la recherche, le lien entre TRC et territoire, et de promouvoir la construction d'apprentissages pour améliorer les prises de décisions locales. Les résultats indiquent la nécessité d'analyser avant l'introduction d'initiatives de TRC les conditions pré existantes du territoire et des visions locales des acteurs concernés qui influent directement dans la construction de l'espace touristique. Ce travail suggère que le processus de construction d'une initiative de TRC et les mécanismes qui se créent dAnalyse deoivent être étudiés avec plus d'attention.

This article is a guide for the promotion of local economic development through community-based rural tourism. A methodological perspective for the accompaniment of organized communities interest- ed in the development of community rural tourism projects will be taken into consideration.The claim is to share a methodology applied in rural com- munities of Costa Rica and that it might be useful in similar situations. Este artículo es una guía para la promoción del desarrollo económico local por medio del turismo rural comunitario. Se toma en cuenta una per- spectiva teórico-metodológica para el acompaña- miento a comunidades organizadas interesadas en la gestación de proyectos de turismo rural comuni- tario. La pretensión es compartir una metodología aplicada en comunidades rurales de Costa Rica que podría ser útil en situaciones similares.
