We present a multi-wavelength study on three new $z\sim5.6$ quasi stellar objects (QSOs) selected based on their radio and optical/near-infrared properties in publicly available surveys and then identified with dedicated spectroscopic observations. These are among the radio-brightest QSOs currently known at $z>5.5$, having $\rm R=S_{\rm 5GHz}/S_{\rm 4400A}>100$. In this work we present their identification and we also discuss their multi-wavelength properties (from the radio to the X-ray band) based on the detection in public surveys as well as dedicated radio and X-ray observations. The three sources present a wide range of properties, in terms of relative intensity and spectral shape, highlighting the importance of multi-wavelength observations in order to accurately characterise these high-$z$ objects. In particular, from our analysis we found one source, at $z=5.61$, that presents clear blazars properties (strong and flat radio and X-ray emission), making it one of the most distant currently known in this class. Moreover, from the fit of the optical/near-infrared photometric measurements with an accretion disc model, as well as the analysis of the CIV broad emission line in one case, we were able to estimate the mass and the accretion rate of the central black holes in these systems, finding $\rm M_{\rm BH}\sim1-10\times10^9$ M$_\odot$ accreting at a rate $\lambda_{\rm Edd}\sim0.1-0.2$. With this work we increase the number of very-high redshift radio-powerful QSOs characterised with multi-wavelength observations, essential in order to understand the evolution and the properties of this still poorly constrained class of sources., Comment: Submitted to A&A on July 4th

We present ALMA CO(1-0) observations of the nearby LIRG galaxy pair IRAS05054+1718 with a new analysis of X-ray data collected between 2012 and 2021 using NuSTAR, Swift, and XMM-Newton. The western component of the pair, NED01, hosts a Seyfert 1.9 nucleus launching a powerful X-ray UFO. Our X-ray spectral analysis suggests the UFO could be variable or multi-component in velocity and constrains its momentum flux to $\dot p^{X-ray}_{out} \sim (4\pm2)\times 10^{34}$ gcms$^{-2}$. ALMA CO(1-0) observations include also the eastern component of the pair, a LIRG with no clear evidence for an AGN. We study the CO(1-0) kinematics in the two galaxies using the 3D-BAROLO code. In both sources, we can model the bulk of the CO(1-0) emission with rotating disks and, after subtracting the best-fit models, we detect compact residual emission at S/N=15 within $\sim3$kpc from the centre. A molecular outflow in NED01, if present, cannot be brighter than such residuals, implying an upper limit on its outflow rate of $\dot{M}^{mol}_{out} \lesssim 19\pm14~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$ and on its momentum rate of $\dot p^{mol}_{out} \lesssim (2.7\pm2.4) \times 10^{34}$gcms$^{-1}$. Combined with the revised energetics of the X-ray wind, we derive an upper limit on the momentum rate ratio of $\dot{p}^{mol}_{out}/\dot{p}^{X-ray}_{out}<0.67$. We discuss these results in the context of the expectations of AGN feedback models, and we propose the X-ray disk wind in NED01 has not significantly impacted the molecular gas reservoir (yet), and we can constrain its effect to be much smaller than expectations of AGN ''energy-driven'' feedback models. We also consider and discuss the hypothesis of asymmetries of the molecular disk not properly captured by the 3D-BAROLO code. Our results highlight the challenges in testing the predictions of popular AGN disk-wind feedback theories, even with good quality multi-wavelength observations., Comment: Accepted by A&A

The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) Project led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) is developing and will deploy at the Observatorio del Teide a mini-array (ASTRI Mini-Array) composed of nine telescopes similar to the small-size dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder telescope (ASTRI-Horn) currently operating on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily. The ASTRI Mini-Array will surpass the current Cherenkov telescope array differential sensitivity above a few tera-electronvolt (TeV), extending the energy band well above hundreds of TeV. This will allow us to explore a new window of the electromagnetic spectrum, by convolving the sensitivity performance with excellent angular and energy resolution figures. The ASTRI Mini-Array is a next-generation system of nine imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes that is going to be built at the Observatorio del Teide site. After a first phase, in which the instrument will be operated as an experiment prioritizing a schedule of primary science cases, an observatory phase is foreseen in which other significant targets will be pointed. We focus on the observational feasibility of extragalactic sources and on astrophysical processes that best complement and expand the ASTRI Mini-Array core science, presenting the most relevant examples that are at reach of detection over long-term time scales and whose observation can provide breakthrough achievements in the very-high energy extragalactic science. Such examples cover a wide range of $\gamma$-ray emitters, including the study of AGN low states in the multi-TeV energy range, the possible detection of Seyfert galaxies with long exposures and the searches of dark matter lines above 10 TeV. We report on the direct observation of an extended X-ray jet in the $z$=6.1 radio-loud Active Galactic Nucleus PSO J030947.49+271757.31 from a deep Chandra X-ray observation (128 ksec). This detection represents the most distant kpc off-nuclear emission resolved in the X-rays to date. The angular distance of the emission is $\sim$4" (corresponding to $\sim$20 kpc at $z$=6.1), along the same direction of the jet observed at parsec scales in previous VLBA high-resolution radio observations. Moreover, the 0.5-7.0 keV isophotes coincide with the extended radio emission as imaged by the VLA Sky Survey at 3 GHz. The rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosity of the extended component is L$_{2-10keV}$=5.9$\times$10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, about 8% of the core: this makes it one of the most luminous jets resolved in the X-rays so far. Through Spectral Energy Distribution modelling we find that this emission can be explained by the Inverse Compton interaction with the photons of the Cosmic Microwave Background assuming that the jet's physical parameters are similar to those in the local Universe. At the same time, we find that the radiation produced by a putative population of high-energetic electrons through the synchrotron process observed at low redshift is quenched at high redshift, hence becoming negligible., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

Past X-ray observations of the nearby Seyfert 2 MCG-03-58-007 revealed the presence of a powerful and highly variable disk wind, where two possible phases outflowing with $v_{\rm out1}/c\sim -0.07$ and $v_{\rm out2}/c\sim -0.2$ were observed. Multi-epoch X-ray observations, covering the period from 2010 to 2018, showed that the lower velocity component is persistent, as it was detected in all the observations, while the faster phase outflowing with $v_{\rm out2}/c\sim -0.2$ appeared to be more sporadic. Here we present the analysis of a new monitoring campaign of MCG-03-58-007 performed in May-June 2019 and consisting of four simultaneous XMM-Newton & NuSTAR observations. We confirm that the disk wind in MCG-03-58-007 is persistent, as it is detected in all the observations, and powerful, having a kinetic power that ranges between 0.5-10% of the Eddington luminosity. The highly ionized wind (log($ \xi/{\rm erg\,cm \,s^{-1}})\sim 5$) is variable in both the opacity and remarkably in its velocity. This is the first time where we have observed a substantial variability of the outflowing velocity in a disk wind, which dropped from $v_{\rm {out}}/c\sim -0.2$ (as measured in the first three observations) to $v_{\rm {out}}/c\sim -0.074$ in just 16 days. We conclude that such a dramatic and fast variability of the outflowing velocity could be due to the acceleration of the wind, as recently proposed by Mizumoto et al. (2021). Here, the faster wind, seen in the first three observations, is already accelerated to $v_{\rm {out}}/c \sim -0.2$, while in the last observation our line of sight intercepts only the slower, pre-accelerated streamline., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures. Photoionized absorbers of outflowing gas are commonly found in the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN). While most of these absorbers are seldom significantly variable, some ionized obscurers have been increasingly found to substantially change their column density on a wide range of time scales. These $N_\text{H}$ variations are often considered as the signature of the clumpy nature of the absorbers. Here we present the analysis of a new Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory campaign of the type-1 quasar PG 1114+445, which was observed to investigate the time evolution of the multiphase outflowing absorbers previously detected in its spectra. The analyzed dataset consists of 22 observations, with a total exposure of $\sim90$ ks, spanning about $20$ months. During the whole campaign, we report an unusually low flux state with respect to all previous X-ray observations of this quasar. From the analysis of the stacked spectra we find a fully covering absorber with a column density $\log(N_\text{H}/\text{cm}^{-2})=22.9^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$. This is an order of magnitude higher than the column density measured in the previous observations. This is either due to a variation of the known absorbers, or by a new one, eclipsing the X-ray emitting source. We also find a ionization parameter of $\log(\xi/\text{erg cm s}^{-1})=1.4^{+0.6}_{-0.2}$. Assuming that the obscuration lasts for the whole duration of the campaign, i.e. more than $20$ months, we estimate the minimum distance of the ionized clump, which is located at $r\gtrsim0.5$ pc., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. Different works have recently found an increase of the average X-ray-to-radio luminosity ratio with redshift in the blazar population. We evaluate here whether the inverse Compton interaction between the relativistic electrons within the jet and the photons of the Cosmic Microwave Background (IC/CMB) can explain this trend. Moreover, we test whether the IC/CMB model can also be at the origin of the different space density evolutions found in X-ray and radio selected blazar samples. By considering the best statistically complete samples of blazars selected in the radio or in the X-ray band and covering a large range of redshift (0.5$\lesssim$ z$\lesssim$ 5.5), we evaluate the expected impact of the CMB on the observed X-ray emission on each sample and then we compare these predictions with the observations. We find that this model can satisfactorily explain both the observed trend of the X-ray-to-radio luminosity ratios with redshift and the different cosmological evolutions derived from the radio and X-ray band. Finally, we discuss how currently on-going X-ray missions, like eROSITA, could help to further constrain the observed evolution at even higher redshifts (up to z$\sim$6-7)., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures and 2 tables. Although thousands of galaxy mergers are known, only a handful of sub-kiloparsec-scale supermassive black hole (SMBH) pairs have been confirmed so far, leaving a huge gap between the observed and predicted numbers of such objects. In this work, we present a detailed analysis of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical spectrum and of near-infrared (NIR) diffraction limited imaging of SDSS~J1431+4358. This object is a local radio-quiet type 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) previously selected as a double AGN candidate on the basis of the double-peaked [OIII] emission line. The NIR adaptive optics-assisted observations were obtained at the Large Binocular Telescope with the LUCI+FLAO camera. We found that most of the prominent optical emission lines are characterized by a double-peaked profile, mainly produced by AGN photoionization. Our spectroscopical analysis disfavors the hypothesis that the double-peaked emission lines in the source are the signatures of outflow kinematics, leaving open the possibility that we are detecting either the rotation of a single narrow-line region or the presence of two SMBHs orbiting around a common central potential. The latter scenario is further supported by the high-spatial resolution NIR imaging: after subtracting the dominant contribution of the stellar bulge component in the host galaxy, we detect two faint nuclear sources at r<0.5 kpc projected separation. Interestingly, the two sources have a position angle consistent with that defined by the two regions where the [OIII] double peaks most likely originate. Aside from the discovery of a promising sub-kiloparsec scale dual AGN, our analysis shows the importance of an appropriate host galaxy subtraction in order to achieve a reliable estimate of the incidence of dual AGNs at small projected separations., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted by A&A (revised to match the A&A version)

Past Suzaku, XMM and NuSTAR observations of the nearby (z=0.0323) bright Seyfert 2 galaxy MCG-03-58-007 revealed the presence of two deep and blue-shifted Fe K-shell absorption line profiles. These could be explained with the presence of two phases of a highly ionized, high column density accretion disk wind outflowing with $v_{out1}\sim -0.1c$ and $v_{out2}\sim -0.2c$. Here we present two new observations of MCG-03-58-007: one was carried out in 2016 with Chandra and one in 2018 with Swift. Both caught MCG-03-58-007 in a brighter state ($F_{\mathrm{2-10\,keV}}\sim 4\times 10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) confirming the presence of the fast disk wind. The multi-epoch observations of MCG-03-58-007 covering the period from 2010 to 2018 were then analysed. These data show that the lower velocity component outflowing with $v_{out1}\sim -0.072\pm 0.002c$ is persistent and detected in all the observations, although it is variable in column density in the range $N_\rm{H}\sim 3-8 \times 10^{23}$cm$^{-2}$. In the 2016 Swift observation we detected again the second faster component outflowing with $v_{out2}\sim -0.2c$, with a column density ($N_\rm{H}=7.0^{+5.6}_{-4.1}\times 10^{23}$cm$^{-2}$), similar to that seen during the Suzaku observation. However during the Chandra observation two years earlier, this zone was not present ($N_\rm{H}<1.5\times 10^{23}$cm$^{-2}$), suggesting that this faster zone is intermittent. Overall the multi-epochs observations show that the disk wind in MCG-03-58-007 is not only powerful, but also extremely variable, hence placing MCG-03-58-007 among unique disk winds such as the one seen in the famous QSO PDS456. One of the main results of this investigation is the consideration that these winds could be extremely variable, sometime appearing and sometime disappearing; thus to reach solid and firm conclusions about their energetics multiple observations are mandatory., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted by MNRAS

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $\gamma$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $\gamma$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $\gamma$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $\gamma$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $\gamma$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We present the discovery of PSO J030947.49+271757.31, the radio brightest (23.7 mJy at 1.4 GHz) active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z>6.0. It was selected by cross-matching the NRAO VLA Sky Survey and the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System PS1 databases and its high-z nature was confirmed by a dedicated spectroscopic observation at the Large Binocular Telescope. A pointed Neil Gehrels $Swift$ Observatory XRT observation allowed us to measure a flux of $\sim$3.4$\times$10$^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the [0.5-10] keV energy band, which also makes this object the X-ray brightest AGN ever observed at z>6.0. Its flat radio spectrum ($\alpha_{\nu r}$<0.5), very high radio loudness (R>10$^3$), and strong X-ray emission, compared to the optical, support the hypothesis of the blazar nature of this source. %i.e. a radio-loud (RL) AGN with the relativistic jet pointed toward us. Assuming that this is the only blazar at this redshift in the surveyed area of sky, we derive a space density of blazars at z$\sim$6 and with M$_{1450 \mbox{\AA}}$ < -25.1 of 5.5$^{+11.2}_{-4.6}$$\times$10$^{-3}$ Gpc$^{-3}$. From this number, and assuming a reasonable value of the bulk velocity of the jet ($\Gamma$=10), we can also infer a space density of the entire radio-loud AGN population at z$\sim$6 with the same optical/UV absolute magnitude of 1.10$^{+2.53}_{-0.91}$ Gpc$^{-3}$. The REX (Radio-Emitting X-ray sources) is a catalogue produced by cross-matching X-ray data from the ROSAT-PSPC archive of pointed observations and radio data from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey, aimed at the selection of blazars. From the REX catalogue, we select a well defined and statistically complete sample of high-energy peaked BL Lac (HBL). HBL are expected to be the most numerous class of extragalactic TeV emitting sources. Specifically, we have considered only the REX sources in the currently planned CTA extragalactic survey area satisfying specific criteria and with an optical spectroscopic confirmation. We obtain 46 HBL candidates that we called Te-REX (TeV-emitting REX). We estimate the very high-energy gamma-ray emission, in the TeV domain, using an empirical approach i.e. using specific statistical relations between gamma-rays (at GeV energies) and radio/X-rays properties observed in bright HBL from the literature. We compare the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with the sensitivities of current and upcoming Cherenkov telescopes and we predict that 14 Te-REX could be detectable with 50 hours of observations of CTA and 7 of them also with current Cherenkov facilities in 50 hours. By extrapolating these numbers on the total extragalactic sky, we predict that about 800 HBL could be visible in pointed CTA observations and about 400 with current Cherenkov telescopes in 50 hours. Interestingly, our predictions show that a non-negligible fraction (about 30%) of the HBL that will be detectable by CTA is composed of relatively weak objects whose optical nuclear emission is swamped by the host-galaxy light and not (yet) detected by Fermi-LAT., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

We present the X-ray analysis of the largest flux-limited complete sample of blazar candidates at z>4 selected from the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS). After obtaining a nearly complete (24/25) X-ray coverage of the sample (from Swift-XRT, XMM-Newton and Chandra), we analysed the spectra in order to identify the bona-fide blazars. We classified the sources based on the shape of their Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) and, in particular, on the flatness of the X-ray emission and its intensity compared to the optical one. We then compared these high-z blazars with a blazar sample selected at lower redshifts (z~1). We found a significant difference in the X-ray-to-radio luminosity ratios, with the CLASS blazars having a mean ratio 2.4+/-0.5 times larger than low-z blazars. We tentatively interpret this evolution as due to the interaction of the electrons of the jet with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons, which is expected to boost the observed X-ray emission at high redshifts. Such a dependence has been already observed in highly radio-loud AGNs in the recent literature. This is the first time it is observed using a statistically complete radio flux limited sample of blazars. We have then evaluated whether this effect could explain the differences in the cosmological evolution recently found between radio and X-ray selected samples of blazars. Investigations of H$_2$O maser galaxies at X-ray energies reveal that most AGN associated with water masers are characterized by high levels of absorption. With the aim of finding new maser sources for possible interferometric follow-ups, we have searched for water maser emission in a well-defined sample of heavily absorbed AGN ($N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$), including Compton-thick (CT) sources. All the galaxies in the sample were already searched for 22 GHz water maser emission in previous surveys. With the goal of providing a detection or a stringent upper limit on the H$_2$O luminosity, we re-observed some of the non-detected sources with the Green Bank Telescope. A new luminous H$_2$O maser ($L_{\rm H2O} \sim 200\,$L$_\odot$) was detected in the mid-IR-bright Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 15480-0344 and then followed-up with the Very Long Baseline Array. In order to shed light on the origin of the maser (jet/outflow vs. disc), we recently observed the radio continuum emission in IRAS 15480-0344 with the European VLBI network (EVN) at 1.7 and 5.0 GHz. With the newly discovered megamaser in IRAS 15480-0344 revealing a narrow ($\sim$0.6 km s$^{-1}$) and a broad ($\sim$90 km s$^{-1}$) component, the maser detection rate of the CT AGN sample is 50% (18/36), which is one of the highest ever found in maser surveys. The EVN maps show two bright sources (labeled SW and NE) in the nuclear region of IRAS 15480-0344, which we interpret as jet knots tracing regions where the radio plasma impacts dense molecular clouds. We report the results of a detailed analysis of a deep simultaneous $130\,\rm ks$ \textit{XMM-Newton & NuSTAR} observation of the nearby ($z=0.0315$) and bright ($L_{\rm bol}\sim3\times10^{45}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$) starburst-AGN Seyfert\,2 system: MCG--03--58--007. From the broadband fitting we show that most of the obscuration needs to be modeled with a toroidal type reprocessor such as \texttt{MYTorus} \citep{MurphyYaqoob09}. Nonetheless the signature of a powerful disc-wind is still apparent at higher energies and the observed rapid short-term X-ray spectral variability is more likely caused by a variable zone of highly ionized fast wind rather than by a neutral clumpy medium. We also detect X-ray emission from larger scale gas as seen from the presence of several soft narrow emission lines in the RGS, originating from a contribution of a weak star forming activity together with a dominant photoionized component from the AGN., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the discovery of a new candidate for a fast disk wind, in the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy MCG-03-58-007. This wind is discovered in a deep Suzaku observation that was performed in 2010. Overall the X-ray spectrum of MCG-03-58-007 is highly absorbed by a neutral column density of NH~10^23 cm^-2, in agreement with the optical classification as a type 2 AGN. In addition, this observation unveiled the presence of two deep absorption troughs at E = 7.4 +- 0.1 keV and E = 8.5 +- 0.2 keV. If associated with blue-shifted FeXXVI, these features can be explained with the presence of two highly ionised (log \xi/(erg cm/s)~ 5.5) and high column density (NH~5-8 x 10^23cm^-2) outflowing absorbers with v_out1~ -0.1c and v_out2~ -0.2c. The disk wind detected during this observation is most likely launched from within a few hundreds gravitational radii from the central black and has a kinetic output that matches the prescription for significant feedback. The presence of the lower velocity component of the disk wind is independently confirmed by the analysis of a follow-up XMM-Newton & NuSTAR observation. A faster (v_out~ -0.35 c) component of the wind is also seen in this second observation. During this observation we also witnessed an occultation event lasting \Delta t ~ 120 ksec, which we ascribe to an increase of the opacity of the disk wind (\Delta NH~1.4x10^24 cm^-2). Our interpretation is that the slow zone (v_out~ -0.1c) of the wind is the most stable but inhomogeneous component, while the faster zones could be associated with two different inner streamlines of the wind., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. Dual/binary Supermassive Black Hole (SMBH) systems are the inevitable consequence of the current Lambda Cold Dark Matter cosmological paradigm. In this context, we discuss here the properties of MCG+11-11-032, a local (z=0.0362) Seyfert 2 galaxy. This source was proposed as a dual AGN candidate on the basis of the presence of double-peaked [OIII] emission lines in its optical spectrum. MCG+11-11-032 is also an X-ray variable source and was observed several times by the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) on time scales from days to years. In this work, we analyze the SDSS-DR13 spectrum and find evidence for double-peaked profiles in all the strongest narrow emission lines. We also study the XRT light curve and unveil the presence of an alternating behavior of the intrinsic 0.3-10 keV flux, while the 123-month Swift BAT light curve supports the presence of almost regular peaks and dips almost every 25 months. In addition, the XRT spectrum suggests for the presence of two narrow emission lines with rest-frame energies of E~6.16 keV and E~6.56 keV. Although by considering only the optical emission lines, different physical mechanisms may be invoked to explain the kinematical properties, the X-ray results are most naturally explained by the presence of a binary SMBH in the center of this source. In particular, we evidence a remarkable agreement between the putative SMBH pair orbital velocity derived from the BAT light curve and the velocity offset derived by the rest-frame Delta_E between the two X-ray line peaks in the XRT spectrum (i.e. Delta_v~0.06c)., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We report on the X-ray monitoring programme (covering slightly more than 11 days) carried out jointly by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR on the intermediate Seyfert galaxy Mrk 915. The light curves extracted in different energy ranges show a variation in intensity but not a significant change in spectral shape. The X-ray spectra reveal the presence of a two-phase warm absorber: a fully covering mildly ionized structure [log xi/(erg cm/s)~2.3, NH~1.3x10^21 cm-2] and a partial covering (~90 per cent) lower ionized one [log xi/(erg cm/s)~0.6, NH~2x10^22 cm-2]. A reflection component from distant matter is also present. Finally, a high-column density (NH~1.5x10^23 cm-2) distribution of neutral matter covering a small fraction of the central region is observed, almost constant, in all observations. Main driver of the variations observed between the datasets is a decrease in the intrinsic emission by a factor of ~1.5. Slight variations in the partial covering ionized absorber are detected, while the data are consistent with no variation of the total covering absorber. The most likely interpretation of the present data locates this complex absorber closer to the central source than the narrow line region, possibly in the broad line region, in the innermost part of the torus, or in between. The neutral obscurer may either be part of this same stratified structure or associated with the walls of the torus, grazed by (and partially intercepting) the line of sight., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. Approximately 3-17 percent of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) without detected rest-frame UV/optical broad emission lines (type-2 AGN) do not show absorption in X-rays. The physical origin behind the apparently discordant optical/X-ray properties is not fully understood. Our study aims at providing insight into this issue by conducting a detailed analysis of the nuclear dust extinction and X-ray absorption properties of two AGN with low X-ray absorption and with high optical extinction, for which a rich set of high quality spectroscopic data is available from XMM-Newton archive data in X-rays and XSHOOTER proprietary data at UV-to-NIR wavelengths. In order to unveil the apparent mismatch, we have determined the A$_{\rm V}$/N$_{\rm H}$ and both the Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) and the host galaxy masses. We find that the mismatch is caused in one case by an abnormally high dust-to-gas ratio that makes the UV/optical emission to appear more obscured than in the X-rays. For the other object we find that the dust-to-gas ratio is similar to the Galactic one but the AGN is hosted by a very massive galaxy so that the broad emission lines and the nuclear continuum are swamped by the star-light and difficult to detect., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from a 90 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the X-ray luminous interacting galaxy system Arp 299 (NGC 3690/IC 694). We detect 25 discrete X-ray sources with luminosities above 4.0x10^38 erg s^-1 covering the entire Ultra Luminous X-ray source (ULX) regime. Based on the hard X-ray spectra of the non-nuclear discrete sources identified in Arp 299, and their association with young, actively star-forming region of Arp 299 we identify them as HMXBs. We find in total 20 off-nuclear sources with luminosities above the ULX limit, 14 of which are point-like sources. Furthermore we observe a marginally significant deficit in the number of ULXs, with respect to the number expected from scaling relations of X-ray binaries with the star formation rate (SFR). Although the high metalicity of the galaxy could result in lower ULX numbers, the good agreement between the observed total X-ray luminosity of ULXs, and that expected from the relevant scaling relation indicates that this deficit could be the result of confusion effects. The integrated spectrum of the galaxy shows the presence of a hot gaseous component with kT = 0.72+-0.03 keV, contributing 20% of the soft (0.1-2.0 keV) unabsorbed luminosity of the galaxy. A plume of soft X-ray emission in the west of the galaxy indicates a large scale outflow. We find that the AGN in NGC 3690 contributes only 22% of the observed broad-band X-ray luminosity of Arp 299., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 9 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

A relationship between the water maser detection rate and large nuclear column densities in AGN has often been cited in the literature. Indeed, detailed studies of luminous water masers, typically associated with the nuclear activity, allow us to investigate the innermost regions of AGN, with an impact on the still debated Unified Model for this class of objects.We have recently entertained a search for maser emission in a well-defined sample of Compton-thick AGN aimed at investigating, on firm statistical bases, the aforementioned relationship. While the survey is still ongoing, and is matter of a forthcoming publication, a new luminous water maser has been detected in the lenticular (field) S0 galaxy IRAS15480-0344, whose origin, associated with an accretion disc or a nuclear outflow/jet, needs to be assessed. Multi-epoch single-dish observations and VLBI measurements were performed to investigate the distribution, spatial extension, and variability of the maser emission in order to infer the main characteristics of the water megamaser. The new detection in IRAS15480-0344 is reported: a megamaser with a total single-dish isotropic luminosity of ~200 Lsun and a profile composed of two main features, a broad line with a full width to half maximum (FWHM) linewidth of ~90 km/s and a narrow (FWHM<1 km/s) one. We performed a follow-up to the detection with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and confidently detected only the narrow component, which is coincident with the nuclear radio continuum emission detected with the Very Large Array at 8.4 GHz. A weak narrow feature has also been detected in the velocity range of the broad feature and is located 15 pc to the north-west with respect to the stronger component. In this paper we present the results obtained with a monitoring programme (23 days long) performed with Swift-XRT on the local Seyfert galaxy Mrk 915. The light-curve analysis shows a significant count rate variation (about a factor of 2-3) on a time-scale of a few days, while the X-ray colours show a change in the spectral curvature below 2 keV and the presence of two main spectral states. From the spectral analysis we find that the observed variations can be explained by the change of the intrinsic nuclear power (about a factor of 1.5) coupled with a change of the properties of an ionized absorber. The quality of the data prevents us from firmly establishing if the spectral variation is due to a change in the ionization state and/or in the covering factor of the absorbing medium. The latter scenario would imply a clumpy structure of the ionized medium. By combining the information provided by the light curve and the spectral analyses, we can derive some constraints on the location of the absorber under the hypotheses of either homogeneous or clumpy medium. In both cases, we find that the absorber should be located inside the outer edge of an extended torus and, in particular, under the clumpy hypothesis, it should be located near, or just outside, to the broad emission line region., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Galaxy merging is widely accepted to be a key driving factor in galaxy formation and evolution, while the feedback from AGN is thought to regulate the BH-bulge coevolution and the star formation process. In this context, we focused on 1SXPSJ050819.8+172149, a local (z=0.0175) Seyfert 1.9 galaxy (L_bol~4x10^43 ergs/s). The source belongs to an IR-luminous interacting pair of galaxies, characterized by a luminosity for the whole system (due to the combination of star formation and accretion) of log(L_IR/L_sun)=11.2. We present the first detailed description of the 0.3-10keV spectrum of 1SXPSJ050819.8+172149, monitored by Swift with 9 pointings performed in less than 1 month. The X-ray emission of 1SXPSJ050819.8+172149 is analysed by combining all the Swift pointings, for a total of ~72ks XRT net exposure. The averaged Swift-BAT spectrum from the 70-month survey is also analysed. The slope of the continuum is ~1.8, with an intrinsic column density NH~2.4x10^22 cm-2, and a deabsorbed luminosity L(2-10keV)~4x10^42 ergs/s. Our observations provide a tentative (2.1sigma) detection of a blue-shifted FeXXVI absorption line (rest-frame E~7.8 keV), suggesting the discovery for a new candidate powerful wind in this source. The physical properties of the outflow cannot be firmly assessed, due to the low statistics of the spectrum and to the observed energy of the line, too close to the higher boundary of the Swift-XRT bandpass. However, our analysis suggests that, if the detection is confirmed, the line could be associated with a high-velocity (vout~0.1c) outflow most likely launched within 80r_S. To our knowledge this is the first detection of a previously unknown ultrafast wind with Swift. The high NH suggested by the observed equivalent width of the line (EW~ -230eV, although with large uncertainties), would imply a kinetic output strong enough to be comparable to the AGN bolometric luminosity., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. One of the key ingredients of the Unified Model of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is the presence of a torus-like optically thick medium composed by dust and gas around the putative supermassive black hole. However, the structure, size and composition of this circumnuclear medium are still matter of debate. To this end, the search for column density variations through X-ray monitoring on different timescales (months, weeks and few days) is fundamental to constrain size, kinematics and location of the X-ray absorber(s). Here we describe our project of mining the Swift-XRT archive to assemble a sample of AGN with extreme column density variability and determining the physical properties of the X-ray absorber(s). We also present the results obtained from a daily-weekly Swift-XRT follow-up monitoring recently performed on one of the most interesting new candidates for variability discovered so far, Mrk 915., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. We investigate the mid-infrared properties of the largest (42 objects) sample of radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (RL NLS1) collected to date, using data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We analyse the mid-IR colours of these objects and compare them to what is expected from different combinations of AGN and galaxy templates. We find that, in general, the host-galaxy emission gives an importan contribution to the observed mid-IR flux in particular at the longest wavelengths (W3, at 12micron, and W4, at 22micron). In about half of the sources (22 objects) we observe a very red mid-IR colour (W4-W3>2.5) that can be explained only using a starburst galaxy template (M82). Using the 22micron luminosities, corrected for the AGN contribution, we have then estimated the star-formation rate for 20 of these "red" RL NLS1, finding values ranging from 10 to 500 Msun/y. For the RL NLS1 showing bluer colours, instead, we cannot exclude the presence of a star-forming host galaxy although, on average, we expect a lower star-formation rate. Studying the radio (1.4GHz) to mid-IR (22micron) flux ratios of the RL NLS1 in the sample we found that in ~10 objects the star-forming activity could represent the most important component also at radio frequencies, in addition (or in alternative) to the relativistic jet. We conclude that both the mid-IR and the radio emission of RL NLS1 are a mixture of different components, including the relativistic jet, the dusty torus and an intense star-forming activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

Thanks to the large collecting area (3 x ~1500 cm$^2$ at 1.5 keV) and wide field of view (30' across in full field mode) of the X-ray cameras on board the European Space Agency X-ray observatory XMM-Newton, each individual pointing can result in the detection of hundreds of X-ray sources, most of which are newly discovered. Recently, many improvements in the XMM-Newton data reduction algorithms have been made. These include enhanced source characterisation and reduced spurious source detections, refined astrometric precision, greater net sensitivity and the extraction of spectra and time series for fainter sources, with better signal-to-noise. Further, almost 50\% more observations are in the public domain compared to 2XMMi-DR3, allowing the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (XMM-SSC) to produce a much larger and better quality X-ray source catalogue. The XMM-SSC has developed a pipeline to reduce the XMM-Newton data automatically and using improved calibration a new catalogue version has been produced from XMM-Newton data made public by 2013 Dec. 31 (13 years of data). Manual screening ensures the highest data quality. This catalogue is known as 3XMM. In the latest release, 3XMM-DR5, there are 565962 X-ray detections comprising 396910 unique X-ray sources. For the 133000 brightest sources, spectra and lightcurves are provided. For all detections, the positions on the sky, a measure of the quality of the detection, and an evaluation of the X-ray variability is provided, along with the fluxes and count rates in 7 X-ray energy bands, the total 0.2-12 keV band counts, and four hardness ratios. To identify the detections, a cross correlation with 228 catalogues is also provided for each X-ray detection. 3XMM-DR5 is the largest X-ray source catalogue ever produced. We have determined the relation between the AGN luminosities at rest-frame 6 {\mu}m associated to the dusty torus emission and at 2-10 keV energies using a complete, X-ray flux limited sample of 232 AGN drawn from the Bright Ultra-hard XMM-Newton Survey. The objects have intrinsic X-ray luminosities between 10^42 and 10^46 erg/s and redshifts from 0.05 to 2.8. The rest-frame 6 {\mu}m luminosities were computed using data from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer and are based on a spectral energy distribution decomposition into AGN and galaxy emission. The best-fit relationship for the full sample is consistent with being linear, L_6 {\mu}m $\propto$ L_2-10 keV^0.99$\pm$0.032, with intrinsic scatter, ~0.35 dex in log L_6 {\mu}m. The L_6 {\mu}m/L_2-10 keV luminosity ratio is largely independent on the line-of-sight X-ray absorption. Assuming a constant X-ray bolometric correction, the fraction of AGN bolometric luminosity reprocessed in the mid-IR decreases weakly, if at all, with the AGN luminosity, a finding at odds with simple receding torus models. Type 2 AGN have redder mid-IR continua at rest-frame wavelengths <12 {\mu}m and are overall ~1.3-2 times fainter at 6 {\mu}m than type 1 AGN at a given X-ray luminosity. Regardless of whether type 1 and type 2 AGN have the same or different nuclear dusty toroidal structures, our results imply that the AGN emission at rest-frame 6 {\mu}m is not isotropic due to self-absorption in the dusty torus, as predicted by AGN torus models. The cosmic history of the growth of supermassive black holes in galactic centers parallels that of star-formation in the Universe. However, an important fraction of this growth occurs inconspicuously in obscured objects, where ultraviolet/optical/near-infrared emission is heavily obscured by dust. Since the X-ray flux is less attenuated, a high X-ray-to-optical flux ratio (Fx/Fo) is expected to be an efficient tool to find out these obscured accreting sources. We explore here via optical spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopy and infrared photometry the most extreme cases of this population (those with Fx/Fo >50, EXO50 sources hereafter), using a well defined sample of seven X-ray sources extracted from the 2XMM catalogue. Five EXO50 sources (about 70 percent of the sample) in the bright flux regime explored by our survey (f(2-10 keV) > 1.5E-13 cgs) are associated with obscured AGN (Nh > 1.0E22 cm-2), spanning a redshift range between 0.75 and 1 and characterised by 2-10 keV intrinsic luminosities in the QSO regime (e.g. well in excess to 1.0E44 cgs). We did not find compelling evidence of Compton Thick AGN. Overall the EXO50 Type 2 QSOs do not seem to be different from standard X-ray selected Type 2 QSOs in terms of nuclear absorption; a very high AGN/host galaxy ratio seems to play a major role in explaining their extreme properties. Interestingly three out of five EXO50 Type 2 QSO objects can be classified as Extreme Dust Obscured Galaxies (EDOGs), suggesting that a very high AGN/host ratios (along with the large amount of dust absorption) could be the natural explanation also for a part of the EDOG population. The remaining two EXO50 sources are classified as BL Lac objects, having rather extreme properties, and which are good candidates for TeV emission., Comment: MNRAS in press (Accepted 2014 December 15. We report on simultaneous observations of the local starburst system Arp 299 with NuSTAR and Chandra, which provides the first resolved images of this galaxy up to energies of ~ 45 keV. Fitting the 3-40 keV spectrum reveals a column density of $N_{\rm H}$ ~ 4 x10^{24} cm^{-2}, characteristic of a Compton-thick AGN, and a 10-30 keV luminosity of 1.2x 10^{43} ergs s^{-1}. The hard X-rays detected by NuSTAR above 10 keV are centered on the western nucleus, Arp 299-B, which previous X-ray observations have shown to be the primary source of neutral Fe-K emission. Other X-ray sources, including Arp 299-A, the eastern nucleus which is also thought to harbor an AGN, as well as X-ray binaries, contribute $\lesssim 10%$ to the 10-20 keV emission from the Arp 299 system. The lack of significant emission above 10 keV other than that attributed to Arp 299-B suggests that: a) any AGN in Arp 299-A must be heavily obscured ($N_{\rm H}$ > 10^{24} cm^{-2}) or have a much lower luminosity than Arp 299-B and b) the extranuclear X-ray binaries have spectra that cut-off above ~10 keV. Such soft spectra are characteristic of ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources observed to date by NuSTAR., Comment: 9 pages; accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

Although absorbed quasars are extremely important for our understanding of the energetics of the Universe, the main physical parameters of their central engines are still poorly known. In this work we present and study a complete sample of 14 quasars (QSOs) that are absorbed in the X-rays (column density NH>4x10^21 cm-2 and X-ray luminosity L(2-10 keV)>10^44 ergs/s; XQSO2) belonging to the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey (XBS). From the analysis of their ultraviolet-to-mid-infrared spectral energy distribution we can separate the nuclear emission from the host galaxy contribution, obtaining a measurement of the fundamental nuclear parameters, like the mass of the central supermassive black hole and the value of Eddington ratio, lambda_Edd. Comparing the properties of XQSO2s with those previously obtained for the X-ray unabsorbed QSOs in the XBS, we do not find any evidence that the two samples are drawn from different populations. In particular, the two samples span the same range in Eddington ratios, up to lambda_Edd=0.5; this implies that our XQSO2s populate the "forbidden region" in the so-called "effective Eddington limit paradigm". A combination of low grain abundance, presence of stars inwards of the absorber, and/or anisotropy of the disk emission, can explain this result., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 19 pages (+14 pages for figure 2), 9 figures, 7 tables

We present SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3, a new case of radio-loud narrow line Seyfert 1 (RL NLS1) with a relatively high radio power (P1.4GHz=2.1x10^25 W Hz^-1) and large radioloudness parameter (R1.4=600+/-100). The radio source is compact with a linear size below ~1.4 kpc but, contrary to most of the RL NLS1 discovered so far with such a high R1.4, its radio spectrum is very steep (alpha=0.93) and not supporting a 'blazar-like' nature. Both the small mass of the central super-massive black-hole and the high accretion rate relative to the Eddington limit estimated for this object (3.2x10^7 Msun and 0.27, respectively, with a formal error of ~0.4 dex on both quantities) are typical of the class of NLS1. Through a modeling of the spectral energy distribution of the source we have found that the galaxy hosting SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3 is undergoing a quite intense star-formation (SFR=50 Msun y^-1) which, however, is expected to contribute only marginally (~1 per cent) to the observed radio emission. The radio properties of SDSSJ143244.91+301435.3 are remarkably similar to those of compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio sources, a class of AGN mostly composed by young radio galaxies. This may suggest a direct link between these two classes of AGN, with the CSS sources possibly representing the misaligned version (the so-called parent population) of RL NLS1 showing blazar characteristics., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We aim at probing the emission mechanism of the accreting super massive black holes in the high redshift Universe. We study the X-ray spectrum of ULAS1120+0641, the highest redshift quasar detected so far at z=7.085, which has been deeply observed (340 ks) by XMM-Newton. Despite the long integration time the spectral analysis is limited by the poor statistics, with only 150 source counts being detected. We measured the spectrum in the 2-80 keV rest-frame (0.3-10 keV observed) energy band. Assuming a simple power law model we find a photon index of 2.0+/-0.3 and a luminosity of 6.7+/-0.3 10^44 erg/s in the 2-10 keV band, while the intrinsic absorbing column can be only loosely constrained (NH< 1E23 cm^-2). Combining our data with published data we calculate that the X-ray-to-optical spectral index alpha_OX is1.8+/-0.1, in agreement with the alpha_OX-UV luminosity correlation valid for lower redshift quasars. We expanded to high energies the coverage of the spectral energy distribution of ULAS1120+0641. This is the second time that a z >6 quasar has been investigated through a deep X-ray observation. In agreement with previous studies of z~6 AGN samples, we do not find any hint of evolution in the broadband energy distribution. We present the results of the analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 2 Mrk 348, observed by Suzaku and XMM-Newton. The overall spectrum of Mrk 348 can be described by a primary power law continuum seen through three layers of absorption, of which one is neutral and two are ionised. Comparing Suzaku (2008) and XMM-Newton (2002) observations we find variability of the X-ray spectral curvature. We suggest that the variability can be explained through the change of column density of both the neutral and one of the ionised absorbers, together with a variation of the ionisation level of the same absorber. We thus confirm one of the main features presented in past works, where intrinsic column density variability up to $\sim 10^{23}$~cm$^{-2}$ was observed on time scales of months. We also find that the photon index of the underlying power law continuum ($\Gamma \sim 1.8$) is in agreement with the previous observations of this Seyfert 2., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We study the link between the X-ray emission in radio-quiet AGNs and the accretion rate on the central Supermassive Black Hole using a statistically well-defined and representative sample of 71 type 1 AGNs extracted from the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey. We search and quantify the statistical correlations between some fundamental parameters that characterize the X-ray emission, i.e. the X-ray spectral slope, and the X-ray "loudness", and the accretion rate, both absolute and normalized to the Eddington luminosity (Eddington ratio). We parametrize the X-ray loudness using three different quantities: the bolometric correction, the two-point spectral index and the disk/corona luminosity ratio. We find that the X-ray spectral index depends on the normalized accretion rate while the "X-ray loudness" depends on both the normalized and the absolute accretion rate. The dependence on the Eddington ratio, in particular, is probably induced by the X-ray spectral slope-Eddington ratio correlation. The two proxies usually adopted in the literature to quantify the X-ray loudness of an AGN, i.e. the bolometric correction and the two-point spectral index, behave differently, with the bolometric correction being more sensitive to the Eddington ratio and the two-point spectral index having a stronger dependence with the absolute accretion. The explanation of this result is likely related to the different sensitivity of the two parameters to the X-ray spectral index., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

In powerful radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN), black holes heavier than one billion solar masses form at a redshift ~1.5-2. Supermassive black holes in jetted radio-loud AGN seems to form earlier, at a redshift close to 4. The ratio of active radio-loud to radio-quiet AGN hosting heavy black holes is therefore a rather a strong function of redshift. We report on some recent evidence supporting this conclusion, gathered from the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT, onboard Swift) and by the Large Area Telescope (LAT, onboard Fermi). We suggest that the more frequent occurrence of relativistic jets in the most massive black holes at high redshifts, compared to later times, could be due to the average black hole spin being greater in the distant past, or else to the jet helping a fast accretion rate (or some combination of the two scenarios). We emphasize that the large total accretion efficiency of rapidly spinning black holes inhibits a fast growth, unless a large fraction of the available gravitational energy of the accreted mass is not converted into radiation, but used to form and maintain a powerful jet., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS, main journal

This programme is aimed at obtaining one of the largest X-ray selected samples of identified active galactic nuclei to date in order to characterise such a population at intermediate fluxes, where most of the Universe's accretion power originates. We present the XMM-Newton Wide Angle Survey (XWAS), a new catalogue of almost a thousand X-ray sources spectroscopically identified through optical observations. A sample of X-ray sources detected in 68 XMM-Newton pointed observations was selected for optical multi-fibre spectroscopy. Optical counterparts and corresponding photometry of the X-ray sources were obtained from the SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey. Candidates for spectroscopy were initially selected with magnitudes down to R~21, with preference for X-ray sources having a flux F(0.5-4.5 keV) >10^-14 erg s^-1 cm^-2. Optical spectroscopic observations performed at the Anglo Australian Telescope Two Degree Field were analysed, and the derived spectra were classified based on optical emission lines. We have identified through optical spectroscopy 940 X-ray sources over ~11.8 deg^2 of the sky. Source populations in our sample can be summarised as 65% broad line active galactic nuclei (BLAGN), 16% narrow emission line galaxies (NELGs), 6% absorption line galaxies (ALGs) and 13% stars. An active nucleus is likely to be present also in the large majority of the X-ray sources spectroscopically classified as NELGs or ALGs. Sources lie in high-galactic latitude (|b| > 20 deg) XMM-Newton fields mainly in the southern hemisphere. Due to the large parameter space in redshift (0 < z < 4.25) and flux (10^-15 < F(0.5-4.5 keV) < 10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2) covered by the XWAS this work provides an excellent resource to further study subsamples and particular cases. We study the link between the X-ray emission in radio-quiet AGNs and the accretion rate on the central Supermassive Black-Hole (SMBH) using a well-defined and statistically complete sample of 70 type1 AGNs extracted from the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous survey (XBS). To this end, we search and quantify the statistical correlations between the main parameters that characterize the X-ray emission (i.e. the X-ray spectral slope and the X-ray loudness), and the accretion rate, both absolute and relative to the Eddington limit (Eddington ratio). We derive masses of the central super-massive black hole (SMBH) and accretion rates for 154 type1 AGN belonging to a well-defined X-ray-selected sample, the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Sample (XBS). To this end, we use the most recent "single-epoch" relations, based on Hbeta and MgII2798A emission lines, to derive the SMBH masses. We then use the bolometric luminosities, computed on the basis of an SED-fitting procedure, to calculate the accretion rates, both absolute and normalized to the Eddington luminosity (Eddington ratio). The selected AGNs cover a range of masses from 10^7 to 10^10 Msun with a peak around 8x10^8 Msun and a range of accretion rates from 0.01 to ~50 Msun/year (assuming an efficiency of 0.1), with a peak at ~1 Msun/year. We present a new efficient diagnostic method, based on mid-infrared and X-ray data, to select local (z<0.1) Compton-thick (CT) AGN with the aim of estimating their surface and space density. We define a region in the X-ray/IR vs. HR plane associated to CT AGN, i.e. F(2-12keV)/F25nu25<0.02 and HR>-0.2. We build up a sample of 43 CT AGN candidates using data from IRAS-PSC and 2XMM catalogue. In order to test the efficiency of the proposed method in selecting CT AGN we use the results of the X-ray spectral analysis performed on all the sources of our sample. After taking into account the different selection effects, we have estimated the number of CT in the local Universe and their density down to the IRAS flux limit of F25=0.5Jy. We find that the diagnostic plot proposed here is an efficient method to select Compton-thick AGN in the nearby Universe since ~84% of the sources populating the proposed CT region are actually CT AGN. Twenty percent are newly-discovered CT AGN. We then estimate the surface density of CT AGN down to the IRAS PSC catalogue flux limit (F25=0.5Jy) that turns out to be ~3e-3 src deg-2. After estimating an equivalent IR-hard X-ray limiting flux, we compare our result with those found with SWIFT-BAT. We find that the surface density derived here is a factor 4 above the density computed in the hard X-ray surveys. This difference is ascribed, at least in part, to a significant contribution (~60-90%) of the star-forming activity to the total 25 mic emission for the sources in our sample. By considering only the 25 mic AGN emission, we estimate a surface density of CT AGN which is consistent with the results found by hard X-ray surveys. Finally, we estimated the co-moving space density of CT AGN with intrinsic LX>1e43 erg s-1 (0.004

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) emit radiation over a wide range of wavelengths, with a peak of emission in the far-UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum, a spectral region that is historically difficult to observe. Using optical, GALEX UV and XMM-Newton data we derive the spectral energy distribution (SED) from the optical/UV to X-ray regime of a sizeable sample of AGN. The principal motivation is to investigate the relationship between the optical/UV emission and the X-ray emission and provide bolometric corrections to the hard X-ray (2-10 keV) energy range, kbol, the latter being a fundamental parameter in current physical cosmology. We construct and study the X-ray to optical SED of a sample of 195 X-ray selected Type 1 AGN belonging to the XMM-Newton bright serendipitous survey (XBS). The optical-UV luminosity was computed using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), from our own dedicated optical spectroscopy and the satellite Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), while the X-ray luminosity was computed using XMM-Newton data. Because it covers a wide range of redshift (0.03 < z < 2.2), X-ray luminosities (41.8 < logL[2-10]keV < 45.5 erg/s) and because it is composed of "bright objects", this sample is ideal for this kind of investigation. We find a correlation between kbol and the hard X-ray photon index {\Gamma}(2-10keV) and a tight correlation between the optical-to-X-ray spectral index {\alpha}ox and kbol, so we conclude that both {\Gamma}(2-10keV) and {\alpha}ox can be used as a proxy for kbol., Comment: 44 pages

We present and discuss the properties of a complete and well defined sample of X-ray selected type 1 AGNs including 26 Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 and 129 Broad-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies derived from the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey (XBS). We study the differences between the two classes of AGNs for what concerns the X-ray properties (the photon-index) and the main physical parameters, like the Black-Hole mass and the Eddington ratio. We then consider the two classes together and look for statistical correlations between observed and physical parameters. We find a significant dependence of the photon-index with the Eddington ratio and a weaker (possibly secondary) correlation between the photon index and the Black-Hole Mass., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. We present here a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of the AGN belonging to the XMM-Newton bright survey (XBS) that comprises more than 300 AGN up to redshift ~ 2.4. We performed an X-ray analysis following two different approaches: by analyzing individually each AGN X-ray spectrum and by constructing average spectra for different AGN types. From the individual analysis, we find that there seems to be an anti correlation between the spectral index and the sources' hard X-ray luminosity, such that the average photon index for the higher luminosity sources (> 10E44 erg/s) is significantly flatter than the average for the lower luminosity sources. We also find that the intrinsic column density distribution agrees with AGN unified schemes, although a number of exceptions are found (3% of the whole sample), which are much more common among optically classified type 2 AGN. We also find that the so-called "soft-excess", apart from the intrinsic absorption, constitutes the principal deviation from a power-law shape in AGN X-ray spectra and it clearly displays different characteristics, and likely a different origin, for unabsorbed and absorbed AGN. Regarding the shape of the average spectra, we find that it is best reproduced by a combination of an unabsorbed (absorbed) power law, a narrow Fe Kalpha emission line and a small (large) amount of reflection for unabsorbed (absorbed) sources. We do not significantly detect any relativistic contribution to the line emission and we compute an upper limit for its equivalent width (EW) of 230 eV at the 3 sigma confidence level. Finally, by dividing the type 1 AGN sample into high- and low-luminosity sources, we marginally detect a decrease in the narrow Fe Kalpha line EW and in the amount of reflection as the luminosity increases, the "so-called" Iwasawa-Taniguchi effect., Comment: 42 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Survey Science Centre of the XMM-Newton satellite released the first incremental version of the 2XMM catalogue in August 2008 . With more than 220,000 X-ray sources, the 2XMMi was at that time the largest catalogue of X-ray sources ever published and thus constitutes an unprecedented resource for studying the high-energy properties of various classes of X-ray emitters such as AGN and stars. The advent of the 7th release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey offers the opportunity to cross-match two major surveys and extend the spectral energy distribution of many 2XMMi sources towards the optical bands. We here present a cross-matching algorithm based on the classical likelihood ratio estimator. The method developed has the advantage of providing true probabilities of identifications without resorting to Monte-Carlo simulations. Over 30,000 2XMMi sources have SDSS counterparts with individual probabilities of identification higher than 90%. Using spectroscopic identifications from the SDSS DR7 catalogue supplemented by extraction from other catalogues, we build an identified sample from which the way the various classes of X-ray emitters gather in the multi dimensional parameter space can be analysed. We investigate two scientific use cases. In the first example we show how these multi-wavelength data can be used to search for new QSO2s. Although no specific range of observed properties allows us to identify Compton Thick QSO2s, we show that the prospects are much better for Compton Thin AGN2 and discuss several possible multi-parameter selection strategies. In a second example, we confirm the hardening of the mean X-ray spectrum with increasing X-ray luminosity on a sample of over 500 X-ray active stars and reveal that on average X-ray active M stars display bluer $g-r$ colour indexes than less active ones (abridged)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Obscured AGN are fundamental to understand the history of Super Massive Black Hole growth and their influence on galaxy formation. However, the Compton-thick AGN (NH>1e24 cm^-2) population is basically unconstrained, with less than few dozen confirmed Compton-thick AGN found and studied so far. A way to select heavily obscured AGN is to compare the X-ray emission below 10 keV (which is strongly depressed) with the emission from other bands less affected by the absorption, i.e. the IR band. To this end, we have cross-correlated the 2XMM catalogue with the IRAS Point Source catalogue and, by using the X-ray to infrared flux ratio and X-ray colors, we selected a well defined sample of Compton-thick AGN candidates at z<0.1. The aim of this work is to confirm the nature and to study one of these local Compton-thick AGN candidates, the nearby (z=0.029) Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 04507+0358, by constraining the amount of intrinsic absorption (NH) and thus the intrinsic luminosity. To this end we obtained deep (100 ks) Suzaku observations (AO4 call) and performed a joint fit with SWIFT-BAT data. We analyzed XMM-Newton, Suzaku and SWIFT-BAT data and we present here the results of this broad-band (0.4-100 keV) spectral analysis. We found that the broad-band X-ray emission of IRAS 04507+0358 requires a large amount of absorption (larger than 1e24 cm^-2) to be well reproduced, thus confirming the Compton-thick nature of this source. In particular, the most probable scenario is that of a mildly (NH (1.3-1.5)x1e24 cm^-2, L(2-10 keV) (5-7)x1e43 erg s^-1) Compton-thick AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 8 pages, 7 figures

With the release of the first year Fermi catalogue, the number of blazars detected above 100 MeV lying at high redshift has been largely increased. There are 28 blazars at z>2 in the "clean" sample. All of them are Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). We study and model their overall spectral energy distribution in order to find the physical parameters of the jet emitting region, and for all of them we estimate their black hole masses and accretion rates. We then compare the jet with the accretion disk properties, setting these sources in the broader context of all the other bright gamma-ray or hard X-ray blazars. We confirm that the jet power correlates with the accretion luminosity. We find that the high energy emission peak shifts to smaller frequencies as the observed luminosity increases, according to the blazar sequence, making the hard X-ray band the most suitable for searching the most luminous and distant blazars., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Energetic X-ray Imaging Survey Telescope (EXIST) is designed to i) use the birth of stellar mass black holes, as revealed by cosmic Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), as probes of the very first stars and galaxies to exist in the Universe. Both their extreme luminosity (~104 times larger than the most luminous quasars) and their hard X-ray detectability over the full sky with wide-field imaging make them ideal "back-lights" to measure cosmic structure with X-ray, optical and near-IR (nIR) spectra over many sight lines to high redshift. The full-sky imaging detection and rapid followup narrow-field imaging and spectroscopy allow two additional primary science objectives: ii) novel surveys of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) accreting as very luminous but rare quasars, which can trace the birth and growth of the first SMBHs as well as quiescent SMBHs (non-accreting) which reveal their presence by X-ray flares from the tidal disruption of passing field stars; and iii) a multiwavelength Time Domain Astrophysics (TDA) survey to measure the temporal variability and physics of a wide range of objects, from birth to death of stars and from the thermal to non-thermal Universe. The epochs of origin of the first stars and galaxies, and subsequent growth of the first supermassive black holes, are among the most fundamental questions. Observations of the highest redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) will be the most compelling in situ probe of the history of initial star formation and consequent epoch of reionization if their prompt and precise detection can be followed immediately by sensitive near-IR imaging and spectroscopy. Blazars are the persistent analogs of GRBs and for the same reason (beaming) can be observed at highest redshifts where they might best trace the high accretion rate-driven jets and growth of supermassive black holes in galaxies. The proposed EXIST mission can uniquely probe these questions, and many others, given its unparalled combination of sensitivity and spatial-spectral-temporal coverage and resolution.
