We present evidence for |$\gamma$| -ray emission from a stacked population of 39 high-latitude globular clusters (GCs) not detected in the Fermi Point Source Catalogue, likely attributable to populations of millisecond pulsars within them. In this work, we use 13 yr of data collected by the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope to search for a cumulative signal from undetected GCs and compared them to control fields (CFs), selected to match the celestial distribution of the target clusters so as to distinguish the |$\gamma$| -ray signal from background emission. The joint likelihood distribution of the GCs has a significant separation (⁠|$\sim 4\sigma$|⁠) from that of the CFs. We also investigate correlations between detected cluster luminosities and other cluster properties such as distance, the number of millisecond pulsars associated with each cluster, and stellar encounter rate but find no significant relationships. The Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos will host the northern site of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), in an area about 200 m below the mountain rim, where the optical telescopes are located. The site currently hosts the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes, which have gathered a unique series of 20 yr of weather data. We use advanced profile-likelihood methods to determine seasonal cycles, the occurrence of weather extremes, weather downtime, and long-term trends correctly taking into account data gaps. The fractality of the weather data is investigated by means of multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis. The data are published according to the Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) principles. We find that the behaviour of wind and relative humidity show significant differences compared to the mountain rim. We observe an increase in temperature of |$0.55\pm 0.07\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.07\mathrm{(syst.)}$| |$^{\circ }$| C decade−1, the diurnal temperature range of |$0.13\pm 0.04\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.02\mathrm{(syst.)}$| |$^{\circ }$| C decade−1 (accompanied by an increase of seasonal oscillation amplitude of |$\Delta C_m=0.29\pm 0.10\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.04\mathrm{(syst.)}$| |$^{\circ }$| C decade−1), and relative humidity of |$4.0\pm 0.4\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 1.1\mathrm{(syst.)}$|  per cent decade−1, and a decrease in trade wind speeds of |$0.85\pm 0.12\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.07\mathrm{(syst.)}$|  (km h−1) decade−1. The occurrence of extreme weather, such as tropical storms and long rains, remains constant over time. We find a significant correlation of temperature with the North Atlantic Oscillation Index and multifractal behaviour of the data. The site shows a weather-related downtime of 18.5 per cent–20.5 per cent, depending on the wind gust limits employed. In this paper, we compile a Fermi sample of the long gamma-ray bursts (GRB) observations from 15 years of GBM catalogue with identified redshift, in which the GOLD sample contains 123 long GRBs at |$z\le 5.6$| and the FULL sample contains 151 long GRBs with redshifts at |$z\le 8.2$|⁠. The Amati relation (the |$E_{\rm p,i}$| – |$E_{\rm iso}$| correlation) is calibrated at |$z\lt 1.4$| by a Gaussian Process from the latest observational Hubble data with the cosmic chronometers method so that GRBs at high-redshift |$z\ge 1.4$| can be used to constrain cosmological models via the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. From the cosmology-independent GRBs with the GOLD sample at |$z\ge 1.4$| and the Pantheon + sample of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) at |$0.01\lt z\le 2.3$|⁠ , we obtain |$\Omega _{\rm m} = 0.354\pm 0.018, H_0 = 73.05\pm 0.2\, \rm {km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$| for the flat Lambda cold dark matter (⁠|$\Lambda$| CDM) model; |$w_0 = -1.22^{+0.18}_{-0.15}$| for the flat w CDM model; and |$w_{a} = -1.12^{+0.45}_{-0.83}$| for the flat Chevallier–Polarski–Linder model at the 1 |$\sigma$| confidence level. A semi-analytic approximation is derived for the time-dependent fraction |$f_\gamma (t)$| of the energy deposited by radioactive decay |$\gamma$| -rays in a homologously expanding plasma of general structure. An analytic approximation is given for spherically symmetric plasma distributions. Applied to Kilonovae (KNe) associated with neutron stars mergers and Type Ia supernovae, our semi-analytic and analytic approximations reproduce, with a few per cent and 10 per cent accuracy, respectively, the energy deposition rates, |$\dot{Q}_{\rm dep}$|⁠ , obtained in numeric Monte Carlo calculations. The time |$t_\gamma$| beyond which |$\gamma$| -ray deposition is inefficient is determined by an effective frequency-independent |$\gamma$| -ray opacity |$\kappa _{\gamma ,\text{eff}}$|⁠ , |$t_\gamma = \sqrt{\kappa _{\gamma ,\text{eff}}\langle \Sigma \rangle t^2}$|⁠ , where |$\langle \Sigma \rangle \propto t^{-2}$| is the average plasma column density. For |$\beta$| -decay dominated energy release, |$\kappa _{\gamma ,\text{eff}}$| is typically close to the effective Compton scattering opacity, |$\kappa _{\gamma ,\text{eff}} \approx 0.025$| cm |$^{2}$|  g |$^{-1}$| with a weak dependence on composition. For KNe, |$\kappa _{\gamma ,\text{eff}}$| depends mainly on the initial electron fraction |$Y_e$|⁠ , |$\kappa _{\gamma ,\text{eff}} \approx 0.03(0.05)$| cm |$^{2}$|  g |$^{-1}$| for |$Y_e \gtrsim (\lesssim) 0.25$| (in contrast with earlier work that found |$\kappa _{\gamma ,\text{eff}}$| larger by 1–2 orders of magnitude for low |$Y_e$|⁠), and is insensitive to the (large) nuclear physics uncertainties. Determining |$t_\gamma$| from observations will therefore measure the ejecta |$\langle \Sigma \rangle t^2$|⁠ , providing a stringent test of models. Massive stars that travel at supersonic speeds can create bow shocks as their stellar winds interact with the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). These bow shocks – prominent sites for mechanical feedback of individual massive stars – are predominantly observed in the infrared (IR) band. Confirmed high-energy emission from stellar bow shocks has remained elusive and confirmed radio counterparts, while rising in recent years, remain rare. Here, we present an in-depth multiwavelength exploration of the bow shock driven by LS 2355, focusing on its non-thermal properties. Using the most recent Fermi source catalogue, we rule out its previously proposed association with an unidentified γ-ray source. Furthermore, we use deep Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) observations from the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey and the Evolutionary Map of the Universe survey to identify a non-thermal radio counterpart: the third spectrally confirmed non-thermal bow shock counterpart after BD+43°3654 and BD+60°2522. We finally use Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) IR data and Gaia to study the surrounding ISM and update the motion of LS 2355. Specifically, we derive a substantially reduced stellar velocity, |$v_* = 7.0\pm 2.5$| km s−1, compared to previous estimates. The observed non-thermal properties of the bow shock can be explained by an interaction between the wind of LS 2355 and a dense H  ii region, at a magnetic field close to the maximum magnetic field strength allowed by the compressibility of the ISM. Similar to earlier works, we find that the thermal radio emission of the shocked ISM is likely to be substantially suppressed for it to be consistent with the observed radio spectrum. The energy injection through Hawking evaporation has been used to put strong constraints on primordial black holes as a dark matter candidate at masses below 1017 g. However, Hawking's semiclassical approximation breaks down at latest after half-decay. Beyond this point, the evaporation could be significantly suppressed, as was shown in recent work. In this study we review existing cosmological and astrophysical bounds on primordial black holes, taking this effect into account. We show that the constraints disappear completely for a reasonable range of parameters, which opens a new window below 1010 g for light primordial black holes as a dark matter candidate. Pulsations from the Crab pulsar have been detected by the MAGIC telescopes at energies up to 1.5 TeV, and the pulsed emission from the Vela pulsar was detected by H.E.S.S. reaching tens of TeV. These discoveries, along with the proposed additional emission due to inverse Compton scattering at TeV energies, lead us to consider suitable candidates for detection with current and future extensive air show (EAS) experiments at very-high-energy (VHE; 0.1 |$-$| 100 TeV) ranges. Leveraging energy spectrum data from pulsars as observed by Fermi and Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) and considering the sensitivities of both LHAASO and SWGO, this study evaluates their detectability and estimates the time required for their significant detection. Our results indicate that LHAASO could detect the Crab's pulsed signal within six years, while SWGO might detect Vela's signal within one year. Observations of the most energetic Fermi pulsars with EAS experiments will provide insight into the nature of VHE pulsar emissions, helping us to clarify the primary characteristics of VHE pulsars. In this study, a model for light travel time effects for emission from a plasma blob in a blazar jet is presented. This calculation could be incorporated into more complex models with particle acceleration and radiation mechanisms, but as presented here, it is agnostic to these mechanisms. This model includes light travel time effects for an expanding or contracting blob. As examples, this model is applied to a flare observed by VERITAS and MAGIC from Mrk 421 in 2013 and a flare observed by the Fermi Large Area Telescope from 3C 454.3 in 2010. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyse 13 yr of Fermi Large Area Telescope Pass 8 events from 127 gamma-ray emitting millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the energy range 0.1–100 GeV and significantly detect 118 MSPs. We fit the stacked emission with a log parabola (LP) spectral model that we show is preferred to two previously published models. We consider the influence of pulsar properties and observed geometric effects on spectral features by defining energy flux colours for both the individual MSPs, and our stacked model as a baseline. There is no correlation of colours with pulsar luminosity, |$\dot{E}$|⁠ , surface magnetic field, or magnetic impact angle. We also find that pulsar geometry has little effect on the observed gamma-ray spectrum, which is in tension with previous modelling of gamma-ray emission with respect to pulsar geometry. Our LP MSP model is applicable to problems where an ensemble of gamma-ray MSPs is considered, such as that of the Galactic Centre excess or in the case of emission from globular clusters. We present six case studies from a comprehensive mass range (1-109 M⊙) of astrophysical objects, each of which possess jets, emit high-energy gamma radiation and in some instances spatially identifiable ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). All sources are strong candidates for UHECR emission, if not already known to emit them. We surmise that wakefield acceleration in conjunction with the magnetorotational instability of the accretion disc explains both structural properties of the jets and details in their emission signals, such as correlations in neutrino and gamma-ray bursts, and in the case of blazars, anticorrelations in flux and spectral index. Furthermore, our model predicts an upper bound for the energy of UHECRs emitted from a source given the mass of its central compact object and total jet luminosity. To provide context for our model predictions, we quantitatively compare them with observational data, however, we have not accounted for the GZK limit and assumed universal values for several model parameters (e.g. jet-spreading index, p) that likely differ between sources. Since the accretion and acceleration mechanisms are independent of mass, aside from determining maximum values, blazars (∼109 M⊙), radio galaxies (∼ 108 M⊙), Seyfert galaxies (∼ 106 M⊙ ), starburst galaxies (∼ 103 M⊙ ), even microquasars (1-10 M⊙) interestingly exhibit the same physics. Other radiation bands, such as X-ray, ultraviolet, or radio, may harbour additional information, but we chose not to focus on them for brevity. However, such an endeavour may open the door to a new multimessenger approach for understanding these objects.

The Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi gamma-ray observatory continuously scans the sky in an energy range from 50 MeV to 1 TeV. The telescope has identified over 6000 gamma-ray emitting sources, approximately half of which are classified as active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, not all of these gamma-ray sources have known redshift values for the reason that redshift estimation following traditional methods can be an expensive, challenging task. Alternatively, as an effort to robustly predict the AGN redshift values, many researchers have recently turned to machine learning methods. However, while the focus has primarily been on predicting specific values, real-world data often allows us only to predict conditional probability distributions, constrained by conditional entropy [ H (Y | X)]. In our study, we employ the Hierarchical Correlation Reconstruction approach to inexpensively predict complex conditional probability distributions, including multimodal ones. This is achieved through independent Mean Squared Error estimation of multiple moment-like parameters, combined into reconstruction of the conditional distribution. By employing linear regression for this purpose, we can develop interpretable models where coefficients describe the contributions of features to conditional moments. This article extends the original approach by incorporating Canonical Correlation Analysis for feature optimization and l1 'lasso' regularization. We report a detection of GeV γ-ray emission potentially originating from the pulsar wind nebula in CTA 1 by analysing about 15 yr of Fermi Large Area Telescope data. By selecting an energy range from 50 GeV to 1 TeV to remove contamination from the γ-ray pulsar PSR J0007+7303, we have discovered an extended γ-ray source with a test statistic value of ∼44.94 in the region of CTA 1. The obtained flux is measured to be 6.71 ± 2.60 × 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1 with a spectral index of 1.61 ± 0.36, which allows for a smooth connection with the flux in the TeV band. CTA 1 is also considered to be associated with 1LHAASO J0007+7303u, which is an ultra-high-energy source listed in the recently published catalogue of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. We assume that the radiation originates from the pulsar wind nebula and that its multiwavelength spectral energy distribution can be explained well with a time-dependent one-zone model. The Tunka Advanced Instrument for Gamma- and cosmic-ray Astronomy (TAIGA) is a multicomponent experiment for the measurement of TeV to PeV gamma- and cosmic rays. Our goal is to establish a novel hybrid direct air shower technique, sufficient to access the energy domain of the long-sought Pevatrons. The hybrid air Cherenkov light detection technique combines the strengths of the HiSCORE shower front sampling array, and two ∼4 m class, ∼9.6° field of view Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The HiSCORE array provides good angular and shower core position resolution, while the IACTs provide the image shape and orientation for gamma-hadron separation. In future, an additional muon detector will be used for hadron tagging at ≥100 TeV energies. Here, only data from the first IACT of the TAIGA experiment are used. A randomforest algorithm was trained using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and real data, and applied to |$85\, \mathrm{h}$| of selected observational data tracking the Crab Nebula at a mean zenith angle of 33.5°, resulting in a threshold energy of 6 TeV for this data set. The analysis was performed using the gammapy package. A total of 163.5 excess events were detected, with a statistical significance of 8.5 σ. The observed spectrum of the Crab Nebula is best fit with a power law above 6 TeV with a flux normalization of (3.20 ± 0.42) · 10−10 TeV−1 cm−2 s−1at a reference energy of |$13\, \mathrm{TeV}$| and a spectral index of −2.74 ± 0.16. The indirect search for dark matter is typically restricted to individual photon bands and instruments. In the context of multiwavelength observations, finding a weak signal in large foreground and background at only one wavelength band is hampered by systematic uncertainties dominating the signal strength. Dark matter particle annihilation is producing Standard Model particles of which the prompt photon emission is searched for in many studies. However, also the secondary emission of charged particles from dark matter annihilation in the TeV range results in comparable or even stronger fluxes in the GHz–GeV range. In this study, we calculate the prompt and secondary emission of a scotogenic weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) with a mass of 1 TeV in 27 dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way. For the secondary emission, we include inverse Compton scattering, bremsstrahlung, and synchrotron radiation, which results in a 'triple hump' structure characteristic for only dark matter and no other astrophysical source. In order to determine the best candidates for multi-instrument analyses, we estimate the diffuse emission component of the Milky Way itself, including its own dark matter halo from the same scotogenic WIMP model. We find signal-to-background ratios of individual sources on the order of 10−3 to 10−2 across X-ray to γ-ray assuming J factors for the cold dark matter distribution inferred from observations and no additional boosting due to small-scale clumping. We argue that a joint multiwavelength analysis of all nearby galaxies and the extension towards the cosmic gamma-ray background is required to disentangle possible dark matter signals from astrophysical background and foreground. HESS J1825 − 137 is one of the most powerful and luminous TeV gamma-ray pulsar wind nebulae, making it an excellent laboratory to study particle transportation around pulsars. We present a model of the (diffusive and advective) transport and radiative losses of electrons from the pulsar PSR J1826 − 1334 powering HESS J1825 − 137 using interstellar medium gas (ISM) data, soft photon fields, and a spatially varying magnetic field. We find that for the characteristic age of |$21\, \mathrm{k}\mathrm{yr}$|⁠ , PSR J1826 − 1334 is unable to meet the energy requirements to match the observed X-ray and gamma-ray emission. An older age of |$40\, \mathrm{k}\mathrm{yr}$|⁠ , together with an electron conversion efficiency of 0.14 and advective flow of v = 0.002 c , can reproduce the observed multiwavelength emission towards HESS J1825 − 137. A turbulent ISM with magnetic field of |$B=20 \,{\rm to}\, 60 \,\mathrm{\mu }{\rm G}$| to the north of HESS J1825 − 137 (as suggested by ISM observations) is required to prevent significant gamma-ray contamination towards the northern |$\mathrm{T}\mathrm{e\mathrm{V}}$| source HESS J1826 − 130. Black hole and neutron star environments often comprise collisionless plasmas immersed in strong magnetic fields and intense baths of low-frequency radiation. In such conditions, relativistic magnetic reconnection can tap the magnetic field energy, accelerating high-energy particles that rapidly cool by inverse Compton (IC) scattering the dense photon background. At the highest particle energies reached in bright gamma-ray sources, IC scattering can stray into the Klein–Nishina regime. Here, the Comptonized photons exceed pair-production threshold with the radiation background and may thus return their energy to the reconnecting plasma as fresh electron–positron pairs. To reliably characterize observable signatures of such Klein–Nishina reconnection, in this work, we present first-principles particle-in-cell simulations of pair-plasma relativistic reconnection coupled to Klein–Nishina and pair-production physics. The simulations show substantial differences between the observable signatures of Klein–Nishina reconnection and reconnection coupled only to low-energy Thomson IC cooling (without pair production). The latter regime exhibits strong harder-when-brighter behaviour; the former involves a stable spectral shape independent of overall brightness. This spectral stability is reminiscent of flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) GeV high states, furnishing evidence that Klein–Nishina radiative physics operates in FSRQs. The simulated Klein–Nishina reconnection pair yield spans from low to order-unity and follows an exponential scaling law in a single governing parameter. Pushing this parameter beyond its range studied here might give way to a copious pair-creation regime. With the advancement of technology, machine learning-based analytical methods have pervaded nearly every discipline in modern studies. Particularly, a number of methods have been employed to estimate the redshift of gamma-ray loud active galactic nuclei (AGN), which are a class of supermassive black hole systems known for their intense multi-wavelength emissions and violent variability. Determining the redshifts of AGNs is essential for understanding their distances, which, in turn, sheds light on our current understanding of the structure of the nearby universe. However, the task involves a number of challenges, such as the need for meticulous follow-up observations across multiple wavelengths and astronomical facilities. In this study, we employ a simple yet effective deep learning model with a single hidden layer having 64 neurons and a dropout of 0.25 in the hidden layer on a sample of AGNs with known redshifts from the latest AGN catalogue, 4LAC-DR3, obtained from Fermi-LAT. We utilized their spectral, spatial, and temporal properties to robustly predict the redshifts of AGNs as well quantify their associated uncertainties by modifying the model using two different variational inference methods. We achieve a correlation coefficient of 0.784 on the test set from the frequentist model and 0.777 and 0.778 from both the variants of variational inference, and, when used to make predictions on the samples with unknown redshifts, we achieve mean predictions of 0.421, 0.415, and 0.393, with standard deviations of 0.258, 0.246, and 0.207 from the models, respectively. The classifications of Fermi-LAT unassociated sources are studied using multiple machine learning (ML) methods. The update data from 4FGL-DR3 are divided into high Galactic latitude (HGL, Galactic latitude | b | > 10°) and low Galactic latitude (LGL, | b | ≤ 10°) regions. In the HGL region, a voting ensemble of four binary ML classifiers achieves a 91 per cent balanced accuracy. In the LGL region, an additional Bayesian–Gaussian (BG) model with three parameters is introduced to eliminate abnormal soft spectrum active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the training set and ML-identified AGN candidates, a voting ensemble of four ternary ML algorithms reach an 81 per cent balanced accuracy. And then, a catalogue of Fermi-LAT all-sky unassociated sources is constructed. Our classification results show that (i) there are 1037 AGN candidates and 88 pulsar candidates with a balanced accuracy of 0.918 ± 0.029 in HGL region, which are consistent with those given in previous all-sky ML approaches; and (ii) there are 290 AGN-like candidates, 135 pulsar-like candidates, and 742 other-like candidates with a balanced accuracy of 0.815 ± 0.027 in the LGL region, which are different from those in previous all-sky ML approaches. Additionally, different training sets and class weights were tested for their impact on classifier accuracy and predicted results. The findings suggest that while different training approaches can yield similar model accuracy, the predicted numbers across different categories can vary significantly. Thus, reliable evaluation of the predicted results is deemed crucial in the ML approach for Fermi-LAT unassociated sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extragalactic magnetic field (EGMF) could be probed with γ-ray observations of distant sources. Primary very high-energy γ-rays from these sources absorb on extragalactic background light photons, and secondary electrons/positrons from the pair production acts create cascade γ-rays. These cascade γ-rays could be detected with space γ-ray telescopes such as Fermi -LAT. The γ-ray burst GRB 221009A was an exceptionally bright transient well suited for intergalactic γ-ray propagation studies. Using publicly available Fermi -LAT data, we obtain upper limits on the spectrum of delayed emission from GRB 221009A during the time windows of 10, 30, and 90 d after the burst, and compare these with model spectra calculated for various EGMF strengths B , obtaining constraints on B. We calculate the jet power of the Blandford–Znajek (BZ) model and the hybrid model based on the self-similar solution of advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs). We study the formation mechanism of the jets of BL Lacertae (BL Lacs) with known redshifts detected by the Fermi satellite after 10 yr of data (4FGL-DR2). The kinetic power of the jets of Fermi BL Lacs is estimated through radio luminosity. The main results are as follows. (1) We find that the jet kinetic power of about 72 per cent intermediate peak frequency BL Lacs (IBL) and 94 per cent high-frequency peak BL Lacs (HBL) can be explained by the hybrid jet model based on ADAFs surrounding Kerr black holes. However, the jet kinetic power of about 74 per cent low-frequency peak BL Lacs (LBL) cannot be explained by the BZ jet model or the hybrid model. (2) The LBL has a higher accretion rate than IBL and HBL. About 14 per cent IBL and 62 per cent HBL have pure optically thin ADAFs. However, 7 per cent LBL may have a hybrid structure consisting of an standard thin disc (SS) plus optically thin ADAFs. (3) After excluding the redshift dependence, there is a weak correlation between the jet kinetic power and the accretion disc luminosity for Fermi BL Lacs. (4) There is a significant correlation between inverse-Compton luminosity and synchrotron luminosity for Fermi BL Lacs. The slope of the relation between inverse-Compton luminosity and synchrotron luminosity for Fermi BL Lacs is consistent with the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process. Numerous studies suggest that high-energy (HE) neutrinos and ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic rays could originate from extremely high-synchrotron peaked (EHSP) BL Lacs, which have been identified as effective particle accelerators. Due to the discovery of HE-neutrinos by the IceCube telescope, these hypotheses may shortly have the opportunity to be tested. In this work, we use a two-zone leptohadronic model to explain the spatial coincidence of three EHSP BL Lac: 1RXS J09462.5+010459, 1ES 1101-232, and 3HSP J095507.9+355101 with the arrival of track-like neutrinos. Our results for 1RXS J09462.5+010459 and 1ES 1101-232 indicate that the model accurately describes the electromagnetic emission and neutrino events without increasing the fluxes in the measured bands. In addition, the X-ray flaring state of 3HSP J095507.9+355101 can be explained by our model, but the measured ultraviolet flux during the neutrino arrival time window cannot be explained. For all cases, the broadband emission and neutrino arrival are better described by hard proton distributions ≈1.5. Finally, the proton luminosity required to explain the neutrino fluxes is slightly higher than the Eddington limit with a photopion efficiency of ≈0.1 for non-flaring state cases. On the other hand, for the flaring state of 3HSP J095507.9+355101, the proton luminosity must be higher than the Eddington limit at least by one order of magnitude, even if the photopion efficiency reaches unity. The spectacular observational phenomena lying in blazars can be well explained and described by the relativistic beaming effect that the emission in the jet is highly boosted along the line of sight to observers. Aiming to reveal the intrinsic emission core dominance in γ-ray loud blazars, we collect a large sample including 226 blazars with available superluminal motion data and radio core-dominance parameters at 5 GHz, and calculate a crucial parameter, R ⊥, defined as the ratio of the luminosity in the jet to the unbeamed luminosity when the viewing angle comes up to 90°. R ⊥ is a better parameter than the well-known core-dominance parameter, R , to reveal more intrinsic physical properties behind the prominent observational characteristics within blazars. We primarily ascertain the updated median value of R ⊥ = 0.032 at 5 GHz, illustrating around 97 per cent of the total radio emission are dominated by the jets in γ-ray loud blazars. We use Fermi-LAT data to analyse the faint gamma-ray source located at the centre of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf spheroidal galaxy. In the 4FGL-DR3 catalogue, this source is associated with the globular cluster, M54. We investigate the spectral energy distribution and spatial extension of this source, with the goal of testing two hypotheses: (1) the emission is due to millisecond pulsars within M54, or (2) the emission is due to annihilating dark matter from the Sgr halo. For the pulsar interpretation, we consider a two-component model which describes both the lower-energy magnetospheric emission and possible high-energy emission arising from inverse Compton scattering. We find that this source has a point-like morphology at low energies, consistent with magnetospheric emission, and find no evidence for a higher-energy component. For the dark matter interpretation, we find the signal favours a dark matter mass of m χ = 29.6 ± 5.8 GeV and an annihilation cross section of |$\sigma v = (2.1 \pm 0.59) \times 10^{-26} \, \text{cm}^3$|  s−1 for the |$b \bar{b}$| channel (or m χ = 8.3 ± 3.8 GeV and |$\sigma v = (0.90 \pm 0.25) \times 10^{-26} \, \text{cm}^3$|  s−1 for the τ+τ− channel), when adopting a J -factor of |$J=10^{19.6} \, \text{GeV}^2 \, \text{cm}^{-5}$|⁠. In the inner region of the disc of an active galactic nucleus (AGN), the collision of two white dwarfs (WDs) through Jacobi capture might be inevitable, leading to a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosion. This transient event, influenced by the disc gas and the gravity of the supermassive black hole (SMBH), exhibits distinct characteristics compared with normal SNe Ia. The energy of the explosion is mainly stored in the ejecta in the form of kinetic energy. Typically, the ejecta is not decelerated effectively by the AGN disc and rushes rapidly out of the AGN disc. However, under the influence of the SMBH, most of the ejecta falls back toward the AGN disc. As the fallback ejecta becomes more dispersed, it interacts with the disc gas, converting its kinetic energy into thermal energy. This results in a high-energy transient characterized by a rapid initial rise followed by a decay with L ∝ t −2.8. The time-scale of the transient ranges from hours to weeks, depending on the mass of the SMBH. This process generates high-energy radiation spanning from hard X-rays to the soft γ range. Additionally, the subsequent damage to the disc may result in changing-look AGNs. Moreover, the falling back of SNe Ia ejecta on to the AGN disc significantly increases the metallicity of the AGN and can even generate heavy elements within AGN discs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the successful discovery of neutrinos, their origin is still a mystery until the association with TXS 0506+056. More messengers are achievable to study the intrinsic mechanism of extreme phenomena. Recently, Fermi-LAT Collaboration published the fourth catalogue of active galactic nuclei (4LAC), together with Data Release 2 later, including totally 3148 sources. The majority of these objects are blazars, which are classified into flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), BL Lac-type objects (BLLs), and blazars of uncertain type (BCUs) according to their optical observation feature. The BCUs take up to 38.2 per cent of total, whose classification is quite challenging and manpower consuming. However with the remarkable advances of technology, deep learning has been widely applied in astronomy. In this work, we take the advantage of 11 machine learning algorithms plus the convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning algorithm to classify BCUs based on 10 parameters and the broad-band spectral energy distribution of each object obtained with vou-blazars. On average, this method has impressive performance, reaching above 95 per cent of balanced accuracy for the training sample, best among the studies so far. We correlate the IceCube neutrinos and blazars in 4LAC, found a few possible associations. With the machine learning prediction, we later elaborate the association of these BCUs with neutrinos samples and find out most of the BCUs associated with neutrinos are with low synchrotron peak frequency, which may be due to the energy distribution of high-energy particles. The X-ray and γ-ray emission of globular clusters (GCs) is attributed to their large fraction of compact binary systems, especially those with millisecond pulsars (MSPs). We analyse a population of 124 Galactic GCs to investigate how their dynamical properties affect the formation and evolution of compact binary systems and how this can be translated into the clusters' observed X-ray and γ-ray emission. We use mainly Chandra X-ray Observatory and Fermi Large Area Telescope observations to achieve our goals and start by detecting 39 GCs in γ rays, seven of which are not listed in previous Fermi -LAT catalogs. Additionally, we find that the total number of X-ray sources within a GC and its γ-ray luminosity are linearly correlated with the stellar encounter rate, indicating that compact binary systems are mainly formed via close stellar encounters. We also find an unexpected rise in the number of X-ray sources for GCs with low rates of stellar encounters, suggesting that there is a dynamical threshold where the formation of X-ray sources is dominated by stellar encounters. Furthermore, we use the Heggie-Hills law to find that subsequent stellar encounters in these compact binaries will, on average, make the binaries even harder, with basically no possibility of binary ionization. Finally, we find that all GCs are point-like sources in γ rays, indicating that the MSPs are concentrated in the clusters' cores, likely due to dynamical friction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Pevatron test statistic (PTS) is applied to data from γ-ray observatories to test for the origin of cosmic rays (CRs) at energies around the knee of the CR spectrum. Several sources are analysed within hadronic emission models. Previously derived results for RX J1713.7−3946, Vela Jr, and HESS J1745−290 are confirmed to demonstrate the concept, reliability, and advantages of the PTS. It is excluded with a significance more than 5σ that the sources RX J1713.7−3946 and Vela Jr are Pevatrons, while strong indications exceeding 4σ are found for excluding HESS J1745−290 as a Pevatron. The importance to resolve source confusion with high angular resolution observations for Pevatrons searches is demonstrated using PTS for the region containing the SNR G106.3+2.7 and the Boomerang nebula. No statistically significant conclusion with respect to Pevatron associations could be drawn from this region, for the diffuse γ-ray emission around the Galactic Centre, and the unidentified γ-ray sources LHAASO J2108+5157, HESS J1702−420A, and MGRO J1908+06. Assuming the entire γ-ray emission from MGRO J1908+06 and the tail region of SNR G106.3+2.7 are hadronic, a statistical indication exceeding 3σ is found for the underlying proton spectrum to extend beyond 350–400 TeV as a power law. This result can indicate that these sources are proton and helium Pevatrons, in which the accelerated particles contribute to the knee of proton and helium spectra observed at Earth. Detection of delayed sub-TeV photons from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by MAGIC and HESS has proven the promising future of GRB afterglow studies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the next-generation gamma-ray observatory. With the unprecedented sensitivity of CTA, afterglow detection rates are expected to increase dramatically. In this paper, we explore the multidimensional afterglow parameter space to see the detectability of sub-TeV photons by CTA. We use a one-zone electron synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton model to obtain the spectral energy distribution. We consider bursts going off in a medium of homogenous density. The blast wave is assumed to be radiatively inefficient and evolving adiabatically. Considering that the electron acceleration is not efficient if the acceleration time-scale exceeds the radiative cooling time-scale, we find that the sub-TeV emission is always due to the self-Compton process. We find that jets with high kinetic energy or large bulk Lorentz factor decelerating into a dense ambient medium offer better detection prospects for CTA. For relatively lower values of the downstream magnetic field, electrons are slow-cooling, and the emitted radiation is positively correlated with the magnetic field. For larger magnetic fields, the electron population enters the fast-cooling phase where the radiated flux is inversely proportional to the magnetic field. We apply our results in the context of bright TeV afterglows detected in recent years. Our results indicate that cosmological short GRBs have only moderate prospects of detection by CTA while local neutron star merger counterparts can be detected if the jet is launched towards the observer. In this paper, we develop multiclass classification of Fermi -large area telescope (LAT) gamma-ray sources using machine learning with hierarchical determination of classes. One of the main challenges in the multiclass classification of the Fermi -LAT sources is that the size of some of the classes is relatively small, for example with less than 10 associated sources belonging to a class. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical structure for the determination of the classes. This enables us to have control over the size of classes and to compare the performance of the classification for different numbers of classes. In particular, the class probabilities in the two-class case can be computed either directly by the two-class classification or by summing probabilities of children classes in multiclass classification. We find that the classifications with few large classes have comparable performance with classifications with many smaller classes. Thus, on one hand, the few-class classification can be recovered by summing probabilities of classification with more classes while, on the other hand, the classification with many classes gives a more detailed information about the physical nature of the sources. As a result of this work, we construct three probabilistic catalogues, which are available online. This work opens up a possibility to perform population studies of sources including unassociated sources and to narrow down searches for possible counterparts of unassociated sources, such as active galactic nuclei, pulsars, or millisecond pulsars. The determination of distance is fundamental in astrophysics. Gamma-ray sources are poorly characterized in this sense, as the limited angular resolution and poor photon-count statistics in gamma-ray astronomy makes it difficult to associate them to a multiwavelength object with known redshift. Taking the 1794 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with known redshift from the Fermi -LAT latest AGN catalogue, 4LAC–DR3, we employ machine learning techniques to predict the distance of the rest of AGNs based on their spectral and spatial properties. The state-of-the-art catboost algorithm reaches an average 0.56 R2 score with 0.46 root-mean-squared error, predicting an average redshift value of z avg = 0.63, with a maximum z max = 1.97. We use the shap explainer package to gain insights into the variables influence on the outcome, and also study the extragalactic background light implications. In a second part, we use this regression model to predict the redshift of the unassociated sample of the latest LAT point-source catalogue, 4FGL–DR3, using the results of a previous paper to determine the possible AGNs within them. The spectral shape of the gamma-ray emission observed for dynamically old supernova remnants that interact with molecular clouds triggered an exciting scenario of adiabatic compression and farther re-acceleration of Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) in radiative shells of the remnants, which was extensively discussed and applied to various sources over recent years. Indeed, the observed gamma-ray spectrum from a number of remnants strongly resembles the expected spectrum of the gamma-ray emission from the compressed population of GCRs. In the following we discuss the feasibility of this scenario and show that it is very unlikely that compressed GCRs could produce sufficient amount of gamma-rays and that the observed spectral shape is putting strong limits on the allowed compression factors. Further, absence of curvature in featureless power-law spectra of evolved supernova remnants at radio wavelengths is strongly disfavouring the compression scenario for electrons and hence for hadrons. Our calculations show that the contribution of compressed electrons to the observed radio flux could reach at most |$\sim 10\,$| per cent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Around one-third of the point-like sources in the Fermi-LAT catalogues remain as unidentified sources (unIDs) today. Indeed, these unIDs lack a clear, univocal association with a known astrophysical source. If dark matter (DM) is composed of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), there is the exciting possibility that some of these unIDs may actually be DM sources, emitting gamma-rays from WIMPs annihilation. We propose a new approach to solve the standard, machine learning (ML) binary classification problem of disentangling prospective DM sources (simulated data) from astrophysical sources (observed data) among the unIDs of the 4FGL Fermi-LAT catalogue. We artificially build two systematic features for the DM data which are originally inherent to observed data: the detection significance and the uncertainty on the spectral curvature. We do it by sampling from the observed population of unIDs, assuming that the DM distributions would, if any, follow the latter. We consider different ML models: Logistic Regression, Neural Network (NN), Naive Bayes, and Gaussian Process, out of which the best, in terms of classification accuracy, is the NN, achieving around |$93.3{{\ \rm per\ cent}} \pm 0.7{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| performance. Other ML evaluation parameters, such as the True Negative and True Positive rates, are discussed in our work. Applying the NN to the unIDs sample, we find that the degeneracy between some astrophysical and DM sources can be partially solved within this methodology. None the less, we conclude that there are no DM source candidates among the pool of 4FGL Fermi-LAT unIDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The correlation between the kinetic jet power P jet, intrinsic γ-ray luminosity (L int), and accretion (L disc) may reveal the underlying jet physics in various black hole systems. We study the relation between kinetic jet power, intrinsic γ-ray luminosity, and accretion by using a large sample of jetted active galactic nuclei (AGNs), including flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs), γ-ray narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (γNLS1s), and radio galaxies. Our main results are as follows: (1) The slope indices of the relation between P jet and L int are 0.85 ± 0.01 for the whole sample, 0.70 ± 0.02 for the FSRQs, 0.83 ± 0.03 for the BL Lacs, 0.68 ± 0.11 for the γNLS1s, and 0.93 ± 0.09 for the radio galaxies, respectively. The jets in γNLS1s and radio galaxies almost follow the same P jet– L int correlation that was obtained for Fermi blazars. (2) The slope indices of the relation between L int and L disc are 1.05 ± 0.02 for the whole sample, 0.94 ± 0.05 for the FSRQs, 1.14 ± 0.05 for the BL Lacs, and 0.92 ± 0.18 for the γNLS1s, respectively. The γNLS1s and radio galaxies almost also follow the L int– L disc correlation derived for Fermi blazars. (3) The jet power is larger than the luminosity of accretion discs for almost all jetted AGNs. Jet power depends on both the Eddington ratio and black hole mass. We obtain log  P jet ∼ (1.00 ± 0.02)log  L disc for the whole sample, which is consistent with the theoretically predicted coefficient. On the other hand, for the flaring state of 3HSP J095507.9+355101, the proton luminosity must be higher than the Eddington limit at least by one order of magnitude, even if the photopion efficiency reaches unity.

We investigate the prompt emission and the afterglow properties of short-duration gamma-ray burst (sGRB) 130603B and another eight sGRB events during 2012-2015, observed by several multiwavelength facilities including the Gran Canarias Telescope 10.4 m telescope. Prompt emission high energy data of the events were obtained by INTEGRAL-SPI-ACS, Swift-BAT, and Fermi-GBM satellites. The prompt emission data by INTEGRAL in the energy range of 0.1-10 MeV for sGRB 130603B, sGRB 140606A, sGRB 140930B, sGRB 141212A, and sGRB 151228A do not show any signature of the extended emission or precursor activity and their spectral and temporal properties are similar to those seen in case of other short bursts. For sGRB 130603B, our new afterglow photometric data constrain the pre-jet-break temporal decay due to denser temporal coverage. For sGRB 130603B, the afterglow light curve, containing both our new and previously published photometric data is broadly consistent with the ISM afterglow model. Modeling of the host galaxies of sGRB 130603B and sGRB 141212A using the LePHARE software supports a scenario in which the environment of the burst is undergoing moderate star formation activity. From the inclusion of our late-time data for eight other sGRBs we are able to: place tight constraints on the non-detection of the afterglow, host galaxy, or any underlying 'kilonova' emission. Our late-time afterglow observations of the sGRB 170817A/GW170817 are also discussed and compared with the sub-set of sGRBs.

We present a search for Galactic transient γ-ray sources using 13 yr of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data. The search is based on a recently developed variable-size sliding-time-window (VSSTW) analysis and aimed at studying variable γ-ray emission from binary systems, including novae, γ-ray binaries, and microquasars. Compared to the previous search for transient sources at random positions in the sky with 11.5 yr of data, we included γ-rays with energies down to 500 MeV, increased a number of test positions, and extended the data set by adding data collected between 2020 February and 2021 July. These refinements allowed us to detect additional three novae, V1324 Sco, V5855 Sgr, V357 Mus, and one γ-ray binary, PSR B1259-63, with the VSSTW method. Our search revealed a γ-ray flare from the microquasar, Cygnus X-3, occurred in 2020. When applied to equal quarters of the data, the analysis provided us with detections of repeating signals from PSR B1259-63, LS I +61°303, PSR J2021+4026, and Cygnus X-3. While the Cygnus X-3 was bright in γ-rays in mid-2020, it was in a soft X-ray state and we found that its γ-ray emission was modulated with the orbital period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are typically associated with massive star core collapse, while the short GRBs are associated with compact binary mergers. However, recent evidence indicates that some peculiar long-duration bursts may correspond to compact binary mergers origins. In this paper, we use the data of the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor to search for peculiar long-duration bursts which may be from compact binary mergers based on outlier events in the |$E_{p,z}\!-\!E_{\gamma ,\rm iso}$| relation. We obtained 10 outlier events by systematically analysing bursts with |$T_{90}\gt 4.2 \rm \ s$| from 2008 August to 2021 July. In order to determine whether these outlier events were from compact binary mergers, we analysed their properties, including spectral lag, hardness ratio, and energy-hardness parameter. Based on the distributions of T 90 − HR and T 90 − Ep , we calculated the probability of outlier events belonging to the short GRBs. Our analysis indicates that GRB 120304B is likely to arise from the merger of a neutron star and a massive white dwarf. GRB 150210A is likely to arise from massive star core collapse. The other eight GRBs are fuzzy bursts that have both long and short GRBs properties. Additionally, we find that outlier samples have relatively high Ep and low fluences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The discovery of a non-thermal radio ring of low surface brightness about one degree in diameter has been recently reported around the location in the sky of the Calvera pulsar, at a high Galactic latitude. The radio properties point to it likely being a new supernova remnant (SNR), G118.4+37.0. We report an analysis of almost 14 yr of observations of this region by the γ-ray Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi satellite. We detect extended GeV emission consistent with the size and location of the radio source, which confirms the presence of relativistic particles. The spectrum of the high-energy emission is fully compatible with an origin in the same relativistic particles producing the radio emission. These features and its similarities to other isolated SNRs establish this source as the remnant of a supernova. A simple model of the non-thermal emission from radio to GeV energies resulting from leptonic emission from electrons produced by the SNR is presented. G118.4+37.0 and other similar isolated remnants could be part of a radio-dim SNR population evolving in low density environments showing hard GeV emission of leptonic origin. The Fermi source 4FGL J1848.7–0129 has been historically related to the globular cluster GLIMPSE-C01 since its very first detection. Although this association is widely accepted, as it appears in the most recent Fermi catalogue, it deserves to be revisited given the multiwavelength evidences and the recent discovery of variable X-ray sources in the Fermi source region. In particular, low frequency radio maps from the Giant Metre Radio Telescope in Pune (India) have been carefully inspected which, together with X-ray data re-analysis from Chandra, lead us to get a deep insight into the candidates to be associated to 4FGL J1848.7–0129. This results in the discovery of a new X-ray variable point source coincident with an unreported non-thermal radio emitter, both of them well inside the 4FGL J1848.7–0129 error ellipse. We analyse and discuss all these observational facts, and we propose now a newly discovered blazar candidate as the most promising responsible for the gamma-ray emission in the Fermi source. If confirmed, this result would set constrains on the number of millisecond pulsars in GLIMPSE-C01 or their gamma-ray emission properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) Collaboration has observed ultrahigh-energy photons up to 1.4 PeV from 12 |$\gamma$| -ray Galactic sources. In particular, the γ-ray spectra of the sources J2226+6057, J1908+0621, and J1825−1326 have been published. We investigate the possibility of suggested origin pulsars near the sources as the PeVatrons. The pulsar is described by a rotating magnetic dipole. Assuming protons are uniformly distributed out of the light cylinders, we obtain the Lorentz distribution of proton energy spectrum. It is found that the protons around pulsar could be accelerated to PeV at short times. The hadronic γ-ray spectra of the suggested origin pulsars are in good agreement with the LHAASO observed γ-ray spectra of the sources J2226+6057, J1908+0621, and J1825−1326. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We re-examine possible dependencies on redshift of the spectral parameters of blazars observed at very-high energies (VHEs) with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. This is relevant to assess potential effects with the source distance of the photon to axion-like particle mixing that would deeply affect the propagation of VHE photons across the Universe. We focus our spectral analysis on 38 BL Lac objects (32 high-peaked and 6 intermediate-peaked) up to redshift z ≃ 0.5, and a small sample of 5 Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars up to z  = 1 treated independently to increase the redshift baseline. The 78 independent spectra of these sources are first of all carefully corrected for the gamma–gamma interaction with photons of the Extragalactic Background Light that are responsible for the major redshift-dependent opacity effect. Then, the corrected spectra are fitted with simple power laws to infer the intrinsic spectral indices Γem at VHE, to test the assumption that such spectral properties are set by the local rather than the global cosmological environment. We find some systematic anticorrelations with redshift of Γem that might indicate, although with low-significance, a spectral anomaly potentially requiring a revision of the photon propagation process. More conclusive tests with higher statistical significance will require the observational improvements offered by the forthcoming new generation of Cherenkov arrays (CTA, ASTRI, LHAASO). We present a new elastic LIDAR concept, based on a bi-axially mounted Nd:YAG laser and a telescope with HPD readout, combined with fast FADC signal digitization and offline pulse analysis. The LIDAR return signals have been extensively quality checked and absolutely calibrated. We analyse seven years of quasi-continuous LIDAR data taken during those nights when the MAGIC telescopes were operating. Characterization of the nocturnal ground layer yields zenith and azimuth angle dependent aerosol extinction scaleheights for clear nights. We derive aerosol transmission statistics for light emitted from various altitudes throughout the year and separated by seasons. We find further seasonal dependencies of cloud base and top altitudes, but none for the LIDAR ratios of clouds. The latest Fermi -LAT gamma-ray catalogue, 4FGL-DR3, presents a large fraction of sources without clear association to known counterparts, i.e. unidentified sources (unIDs). In this paper, we aim to classify them using machine learning algorithms, which are trained with the spectral characteristics of associated sources to predict the class of the unID population. With the state-of-the-art catboost algorithm, based on gradient boosting decision trees, we are able to reach a 67 per cent accuracy on a 23-class data set. Removing a single of these classes – blazars of uncertain type – increases the accuracy to 81 per cent. If interested only in a binary AGN/pulsar distinction, the model accuracy is boosted up to 99 per cent. Additionally, we perform an unsupervised search among both known and unID population, and try to predict the number of clusters of similar sources, without prior knowledge of their classes. We present the results of a cluster search in the γ -ray sky images of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) region by means of the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) and DBSCAN algorithms, at energies higher than 6 and 10 GeV, using 12 yr of Fermi -LAT data. Several significant clusters were found, the majority of which associated with previously known γ -ray sources. We confirm our previous detection of the supernova remnants N 49B and N 63A and found new significant clusters associated with the SNRs N 49, N 186D, and N 44. These sources are among the brightest X-ray remnants in the LMC and corresponds to core-collapse supernovae interacting with dense H  ii regions, indicating that a hadronic origin of high-energy photons is the most likely process. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous objects known: they outshine their host galaxies, making them ideal candidates for probing large-scale structure. Our aim is to determine the Spatial Two-Point Correlation Function of the GRBs with spectroscopic redshifts. We used all observations till 4 June 2021, and we also split the data according to the origin of the redshift (afterglow or host galaxy). We analyzed the possible correlation between the GRB redshift and sky position. There is only one region, called the Faraway GRB Patch, where nine distant GRBs shows deviation from the randomness with an ≈1% significance, showing that the sky and the radial component of the GRB distribution could be factorized and both can be determined independently. The GRBs' cumulative monthly distribution was used to show that it is impossible to synthesize the Sky Exposure Function, even from the perfect observational logs. We estimated the Sky Exposure Function using the Gaussian kernel, and with the radial distribution, it was used for the estimation of the Spatial Two-Point Correlation Function. Monte Carlo simulations were used to determine the Poissonian errors. Our result shows that the current Spatial Two-Point Correlation Function estimations are consistent with zero for the full and the afterglow/host galaxy datasets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations of the long-lived X-ray plateau in short gamma-ray burst (SGRB) afterglow suggest that a portion of binary neutron star mergers would leave behind a rapidly spinning, strongly magnetized neutron star (millisecond magnetar). The new-born magnetar may undergo large deformation due to magnetic distortion or unstable oscillation, which would emit the extended gravitational wave (GW) associated with the SGRB X-ray plateau. In this work, we focus on the spin-down luminosity evolution of magnetar by considering the spin energy loss due to the GW and magnetic dipole radiation, and systematically analyse the SGRB light curves of our magnetar sample. The results show that GW emission signatures have existed in the spin-down stage of GRB 090426 and GRB 150424A. We also present constraints on the ellipticity of the new-born magnetar as ε < 1.58 × 10−3(B /1015 G)(P /1 ms). The magnetar can lose significant spin energy via GW radiation if the ellipticity ε ≥ 10−3 and magnetic field strength B ∼ 1015 G. In addition, we derive the evolution of GW strain for magnetars through their spin-down processes. This result shows that the GW signals from these magnetars may be detectable for the Einstein Telescope (ET). For a rapidly spinning magnetar (P ∼ 1 ms), the detection horizons for aLIGO O3, aLIGO O5, and ET detectors are ∼60, ∼210, and ∼900 Mpc, respectively. We study the prompt phase of low-luminosity gamma-ray bursts (ll-GRBs) as potential source of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-rays and ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Within the internal shock model, we choose parameters for the relativistic outflow such that our representative events have observed properties similar to GRBs 980425, 100316D, and 120714B, and self-consistently calculate the full spectral and temporal properties in a leptonic synchrotron self-Compton scenario. To investigate the conditions under which inverse Compton radiation may lead to a peak in the GeV–TeV range, we vary the fraction of internal energy supplying the magnetic field. Further, we determine the maximal energies achievable for UHECR nuclei and derive constraints on the baryonic loading/typical duration by comparing to the extragalactic gamma-ray background. We find that ll-GRBs are potential targets for multiwavelength studies and in reach for Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) and optical/UV instruments. For comparable sub-MeV emission and similar dynamical evolution of the outflow, weak (strong) magnetic fields induce high (low) fluxes in the VHE regime and low (high) fluxes in the optical. VHE emission may be suppressed by γγ-absorption close to the engine or interactions with the extragalactic background light for redshifts z > 0.1. For UHECRs, the maximal energies of iron nuclei (protons) can be as high as ≃1011 GeV (1010 GeV) if the magnetic energy density is large (and the VHE component is correspondingly weak). These high energies are possible by decoupling the production regions of UHECR and gamma-rays in our multizone model. Finally, we find basic consistency with the energy budget needed to accommodate the UHECR origin from ll-GRBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Type II-P supernovæ (SNe), the most common core-collapse SNe type, result from the explosions of red supergiant stars. Their detection in the radio domain testifies of the presence of relativistic electrons, and shows that they are potentially efficient energetic particle accelerators. If hadrons can also be accelerated, these energetic particles are expected to interact with the surrounding medium to produce a gamma-ray signal even in the multi–TeV range. The intensity of this signal depends on various factors, but an essential one is the density of the circumstellar medium. Such a signal should however be limited by electron–positron pair production arising from the interaction of the gamma-ray photons with optical photons emitted by the supernova photosphere, which can potentially degrade the gamma-ray signal by over ten orders of magnitude in the first days/weeks following the explosion. We calculate the gamma-gamma opacity from a detailed modelling of the time evolution of the forward shock and supernova photosphere, taking a full account of the non-isotropy of the photon interactions. We discuss the time-dependent gamma-ray TeV emission from Type II-P SNe as a function of the stellar progenitor radius and mass-loss rate, as well as the explosion energy and mass of the ejected material. We evaluate the detectability of the SNe with the next generation of Cherenkov telescopes. We find that, while most extragalactic events may be undetectable, Type II-P SNe exploding in our Galaxy or in the Magellanic Clouds should be detected by gamma-ray observatories such as the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array.
