Purpose: This study aimed to develop knowledge of how the follow-up regarding overweight and obesity among children in primary school is experienced by the PHN and how the guidelines may be used to improve health services in this follow-up. Methods: We analysed semi-structured interviews of 9 PHNs using qualitative content analysis. Results: Two themes emerged: Following up with children with overweight and obesity is an important but challenging duty; The PHNs call for clearer guidelines. Following five sub-themes: PHNs strive to adhere to the guidelines, show compassion in the follow-up, have difficulty handling parents' feelings and reactions, feel alone with the responsibility, and have suggestions for clearer guidelines. Conclusions: PHNs call for enough resources to communicate the results of the child's weight in a sufficient form. PHNs and families should establish common goals. The PHN should avoid one-way communication but meet the parents' concerns and needs. This requires the PHN to focus on building a secure relation to the child and the families, as described by Peplau. Guidelines must include instructions and tools on how to communicate and meet the family's concerns. Political action and increased funding could strengthen the follow-up and thereby prevent more obesity among children, which can be a predictor of poorer health outcomes later in life. Background/Objectives: To explore how Public Health Nurses (PHNs) in Fukushima perceived their roles and activities as necessary or inadequate from the immediate aftermath through the long-term recovery of the nuclear disaster. Methods: We conducted a qualitative study using a self-administered questionnaire with open-ended questions to capture the perceptions of PHNs across three disaster phases: peacetime; nuclear emergency; and recovery. Responses were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Results: PHNs' needs and perceived inadequacies varied across the disaster phases. In peacetime, the emphasis was on education for disaster preparedness for both nurses and residents. During the nuclear emergency, the focus shifted to the need for PHN deployment and radiation screening systems, highlighting a significant gap in radiation knowledge. In the recovery phase, the importance of ongoing resident support, rumor management, and trust-building was emphasized, alongside an increased need for radiation education. Conclusions: This study highlights the critical need for phase-specific support systems and educational programs to enhance PHNs' disaster response capabilities. It underscores the importance of preparedness plans and continuous training to improve PHNs' effectiveness in addressing public health challenges during nuclear disasters. Background: The number of foreign-born patients with tuberculosis (TB) has been increasing in Japan, and the number of Vietnamese patients was the highest in 2019. Tuberculosis (TB) is the second leading cause of death from infectious diseases after coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). As the prevalence of TB varies widely globally, measures must be tailored to local characteristics. The Directly Observed Treatment (DOTS) short-course was introduced by the World Health Organization as a global strategy to overcome these challenges. The purpose of this study is to develop an original risk assessment for treatment interruption for Vietnamese patients with TB to be used in Directly Observed Treatment (DOTS), a tuberculosis control measure. Methods: The researchers adopted the Delphi method. Public health nurses of mid-career or above (n = 15) who had conducted DOTS for several Vietnamese patients with TB were selected and surveyed about the content and surface validities of the draft risk assessment items for treatment interruption. The survey was conducted three times. The quantification of content validity and the review and modification of responses regarding each item were analyzed by the researchers. Results: The results identified the following risk categories: "physical characteristics", "background of life during residence", "treatment environment", "understanding tuberculosis and disease acceptance", and "cultural and value trends". Conclusions: The results suggest the need to provide support for tuberculosis recovery from various perspectives, including the living environment of Vietnamese patients with TB, their social environment in Japan, and the culture and values of their country of birth and upbringing. Background: Caring behavior plays a vital role in the nursing profession, especially in public health settings. In-home care services, where patients receive medical attention in the comfort of their homes, the quality of care and patient satisfaction depends heavily on the nurse's ability to exhibit caring behavior. Objective: This study aims to analyze and identify the relationship between the caring behavior of public health nurses and the level of patient satisfaction in homecare services. Methods: In this study, the design used is a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional study approach. According to the formula found by Isaac and Micheal, the population in this study amounted to 402 respondents, so a sample of 162 respondents was obtained. The sampling technique was Probability Sampling with a proportional random sampling type. Despite promoting evidence-based programs over the years, public health nurses have had few training opportunities in evidence-based public health. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a web-based training in building the basic program implementation capacity of public health nurses with two to five years of experience. Methods We developed a simulation-powered web-based training according to an Implementation Degree Assessment Sheet for health programs. This was a randomized, single-blind, parallel-group trial. The primary outcome, the result of implementation capacity for public health nurses, was assessed by the total score of the Implementation Degree Assessment Sheet, and scores for its five domains. The secondary outcome was evaluated by the level of understanding. The primary outcome was analyzed utilizing the t-test and analysis of covariance, whereas the secondary outcome was assessed utilizing the U-test and Quade’s analysis of covariance. Data were collected directly before intervention (T1: baseline), immediately post-intervention (T2), and four weeks post-intervention (T3: endpoint). Results The 197 participants were randomly allocated to either the intervention group (n = 98) or the control group (n = 99). A full analysis set of 152 samples and a per-protocol set of 104 samples were analyzed. The intervention group exhibited a significantly higher total score and five domain-wise scores at the endpoint compared with the control group. The disparity between the endpoint and baseline scores was significantly larger for the intervention group for all scores. The level of understanding was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group at T2 and T3. The effect size of the total score was higher in the full analysis set (Cohen’s d = 0.5) than in the per-protocol set (d = 0.48). Conclusions This web-based training was effective in building the program implementation capacity of participants four weeks post-intervention. This study explored the experiences of public health nurses (PHN) in preventing obesity in preschool children and following national guidelines. We used a descriptive qualitative design with an online open-ended questionnaire based on vignettes describing fictitious practical situations during the follow-up of children presenting with overweight issues in child health clinics. Following qualitative content analysis, we identified one main theme: Strong but complex feelings of responsibility toward supporting parents in preventing obesity in preschool children and adhering to the guidelines. We also identified four subthemes: (a) Difficulties in deciding if the child's weight is a concern. (b) Challenges with meeting children's healthcare needs when weight is a concern. (c) Approaches for engagement and caring weight talks with parents. (d) The need for resources and interdisciplinary collaboration. PHNs suggested improvements for preventing childhood obesity and called for municipal prioritizing of organizational and personnel-related resources to ensure PHNs can efficiently follow national guidelines. Introduction: The Norwegian Government introduced in 2002 a reimbursement scheme for hormonal contraceptives to adolescents at the same time as public health nurses and midwives received authorization to prescribe hormonal contraceptives. This study examines the impact of increased accessibility and public funding on hormonal contraceptive use among adolescents. Material and Methods: The Norwegian Prescription Database, Statistics Norway, and Norwegian Institute of Public Health served as data sources for this cohort study. The study population comprised 174 653 Norwegian women born 1989–1990, 1994–1995, and 1999–2000. We examined use of hormonal contraceptives through dispensed prescriptions from age 12 through age 19 with duration of first continuous use as primary outcome. The statistical analyses were done in SPSS using chi‐squared test, survival analysis, and Joinpoint regression analysis with p‐values < 0.05. Results: By age 19, ~75% of the cohorts had used at least one hormonal method. The main providers of the first prescription were general practitioners and public health nurses. Starters of progestogen‐only pills (POPs) have increased across the cohorts, while starters of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) have decreased. The use of long‐acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) has increased since its inclusion in the reimbursement scheme (2015). Most switchers shifted from COCs or POPs as a start method to implants after LARCs became part of the reimbursement scheme. There has been a significant increase across the cohorts in the number of women who continuously used hormonal contraceptives from start to the end of the calendar year they became 19 years with the same method and after switching methods. We could not correlate changes in decreasing trends for teenage births or induced abortions (Joinpoint analysis) to time for implementation or changes in the reimbursement of hormonal contraceptives from 2002. Conclusions: Primarily public health nurses and to a lesser extent midwives became soon after they received authorization to prescribe COCs important providers. The expansion of the reimbursement scheme to cover POPs, patches, vaginal ring, and depot medroxyprogesterone acetate in 2006 had minor impact on increasing the proportion of long‐term first‐time users. However, the inclusion of LARCs in 2015 significantly increased the proportion of long‐term first‐time hormonal contraceptive users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a mental health disorder that affects 10%–15% women globally. Longitudinal and meta-analyses have consistently demonstrated the negative impacts of PPD on both the affected mothers and subsequent infant development. Given the consideration that antidepressant side effects in breastfeeding infants and the cost-effectiveness considerations of psychotherapies, attention has been paid towards the promising role of social support interventions in order to prevent and reduce the PPD symptoms. Confirming the assertion, this narrative review examines the potential of five social support interventions to ameliorate PPD-related maternal and infant outcomes. The wide implications of psychoeducational strategy, nurses' supportive and non-directive counselling and home-visiting approach are outlined. Furthermore, the evidence underlying the role of peer support, culturally tailored intervention and community-based participatory approach in PPD is elucidated. In clinical practice, this review reinforce the roles of discharge educational intervention led by the experienced nurse during the postpartum stay, in order to maintain psychological mental health among the postpartum mothers. More importantly, the skilled and competence public health nurses act as valuable assets in treating PPD, and this effective treatment alternative should be considered by healthcare planners. In future, major investigations will be strategized to discover the synergistic effects of combined social support approaches to yield a better outcome in the prevention and treatment of PPD. Background: The number of people who access social networking sites continues to increase at an exponential rate. The use of technology is an essential skill for nursing professionals and its development represents a challenge in improving health education, promotion and care. The objective of this systematic review is to analyse the use of social networking sites by healthcare professionals as an intervention tool for evidence-based public health education. Methods: The protocol of this umbrella review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42023407249). Searches were carried out in MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), and Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews, in February 2023. A narrative synthesis of the results was conducted. Results: 1896 articles were found, of which 15 reviews fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Social networks broadened the profession; they were YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram. The target population was mainly young professionals, and they came across different topic areas that addressed health education. Conclusions: It is important to have information backed by scientific evidence to make health decisions. Health professionals active on social networking sites have a unique opportunity to educate the public about health by sharing scientific evidence in an accessible and clear way, which helps to combat misinformation. Public health nurses (PHNs) constitute an important source of nutritional knowledge for parents during the child's first 1000 days of life, but parents also seek advice from various online sources. Access to timely digital interventions may facilitate healthful eating habits later in life. In the Nutrition Now project, we wanted to combine previously evaluated digital interventions on early nutrition and implement the integrated intervention at municipality level. We prospectively explored PHNs' thoughts, needs and expectations regarding the development and usability of such a digital resource. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six PHNs, and data was subjected to thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified: (1) an online resource on nutrition may be a useful tool; (2) the content should attract interest and be broad in scope; (3) it must be easy to apply and adapted to different users; and (4) participating in a development process should seem meaningful. Our findings highlight the need for easily accessible, quality-assured online information to underpin the guidance provided by PHNs. The study further sheds light on prerequisites considered by PHNs to be crucial for parents to engage in a digital resource, as well as their perspectives on how it best may be communicated and used. The aim of the study was to explore and describe how public health nurses at child health clinics experience and perceive the follow-up of children and families when there is concern about the child's care. The goal was to contribute to knowledge development to guide health-promoting nursing care for children and their families. Theoretical perspectives included health promotion, child-centered and family-centered care, in addition to nursing care. An exploratory qualitative design informed by a hermeneutic approach was used. Data were collected in 3 focus groups with 16 public health nurses and analyzed using latent content analysis. The findings detail public health nurses' internal negotiation processes in the follow-up of children and the family, and the ways these negotiation processes were influenced by various prerequisites, the approaches for follow-up, dilemmas that affected public health nurses' approaches, and prolonged dwellings on past responses to children and families of concern. The lack of routines and goals for follow-up, a dominant parental perspective, and ambiguity related to health promotion and disease prevention, all created challenges for the public health nurses. Abstract Background Universal health visiting has been a cornerstone of preventative healthcare for children in the United Kingdom (UK) for over 100 years. In 2016, Scotland introduced a new Universal Health Visiting Pathway (UHVP), involving a greater number of contacts with a particular emphasis on the first year, visits within the home setting, and rigorous developmental assessment conducted by a qualified Health Visitor. To evaluate the UHVP, an outcome indicator framework was developed using routine administrative data. This paper sets out the development of these indicators. Methods A logic model was produced with stakeholders to define the group of outcomes, before further refining and aligning of the measures through discussions with stakeholders and inspection of data. Power calculations were carried out and initial data described for the chosen indicators. Results Eighteen indicators were selected across eight outcome areas: parental smoking, breastfeeding, immunisations, dental health, developmental concerns, obesity, accidents and injuries, and child protection interventions. Data quality was mixed. Coverage of reviews was high; over 90% of children received key reviews. Individual item completion was more variable: 92.2% had breastfeeding data at 6–8 weeks, whilst 63.2% had BMI recorded at 27–30 months. Prevalence also varied greatly, from 1.3% of children’s names being on the Child Protection register for over six months by age three, to 93.6% having received all immunisations by age two. Conclusions Home visiting services play a key role in ensuring children and families have the right support to enable the best start in life. As these programmes evolve, it is crucial to understand whether changes lead to improvements in child outcomes. This paper describes a set of indicators using routinely-collected data, lessening additional burden on participants, and reducing response bias which may be apparent in other forms of evaluation. Further research is needed to explore the transferability of this indicator framework to other settings.

Abstract Background Child maltreatment is a global problem that puts children at risk of mental illness, substance abuse, and premature death. Interdisciplinary collaboration is important in preventing and detecting child maltreatment. In Norway, children undergo universal preventive health assessments and receive complimentary follow-up care from specialized public health nurses in child and family health clinics. These nurses conduct regular check-ups and home visits to monitor children for signs of maltreatment. Objective The objective of this study is to describe how public health nurses at child and family health clinics follow the National Clinical Guidelines to prevent and detect child maltreatment, with a particular focus on clinical procedures and interdisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, we aim to determine factors that are associated with identification of child maltreatment. Design A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among public health nurses working in primary care between October 24th and December 31st, 2022. Public health nurses who worked with children aged 0–5 years and had consultations with families were eligible to participate, resulting in 554 responses. The study employed descriptive analysis, including frequency, percentage and mean, as well as a two-step logistic regression analysis. The study was approved by the relevant authority, and informed consent was obtained through questionnaire completion. Results The public health nurses in this study displayed strong adherence to the guidelines and utilized various comprehensive assessment procedures to monitor child well-being, growth, and development. However, there was limited and infrequent collaboration with other professionals, such as child protection services, general practitioners, and hospitals. Most public health nurses reported occasional suspicion of child maltreatment, with age and years of experience in child and family clinics influencing these suspicions. Older public health nurses were more likely to suspect physical violence, while those with less than two years of experience reported less experience in suspecting maltreatment. Additional education increased the probability of suspecting sexual violence. Conclusions This study provides insights into the practices of public health nurses in Norway regarding the detection and prevention of child maltreatment in child and family clinics. While adherence to guidelines is strong, suspicion of maltreatment is relatively rare. Collaboration across agencies is crucial in addressing child maltreatment. Age and experience may influence the detection of maltreatment. Improved collaboration, targeted guidelines, and ongoing professional development are needed to enhance child protection.

Breastfeeding was at stake for the mothers because breastfeeding could be reduced or stopped, and qualified breastfeeding counselling from midwives and PHNs was essential for them to establish and continue breastfeeding. They needed to be perceived as both breastfeeding mothers and as women with their own needs to master everyday life during the breastfeeding period. Conclusions This study offers insights to midwives, PHNs and others offering breastfeeding counselling by facilitating an understanding of being a breastfeeding mother receiving breastfeeding counselling. Qualified breastfeeding counselling and a trusting relationship with midwives and PHNs are essential for mothers to establish and continue breastfeeding, while deficient counselling may cause breastfeeding difficulties. Mothers need to be treated as whole and competent persons to avoid objectification and fathers/partners need to be included in breastfeeding counselling. The ‘Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative’ should be continued, and guidelines should align with the mothers’ need to incorporate breastfeeding into their daily lives during the breastfeeding period.

Qualified breastfeeding counselling and a trusting relationship with midwives and PHNs are essential for mothers to establish and continue breastfeeding, while deficient counselling may cause breastfeeding difficulties. Mothers need to be treated as whole and competent persons to avoid objectification and fathers/partners need to be included in breastfeeding counselling. The 'Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative' should be continued, and guidelines should align with the mothers' need to incorporate breastfeeding into their daily lives during the breastfeeding period. Background: The workload of public health nurses (PHNs) working for local governments has been increasing as health issues become more diverse and complicated. Even amidst the ongoing administrative and fiscal reforms, there is an urgent need to ensure how effectively and efficiently public health nurses can practice in health service development. The objective of this research was to clarify the actual conditions of best practice transfer (BPT) and its related factors. Methods: An anonymous postal and self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among PHNs working at 334 sites, including the local government offices and health centers across Japan, and analysed mainly through logistic regression analysis. Results: One hundred eighty-five of the 334 institutions (55.4%) agreed to participate, and of the 966 questionnaire forms distributed, 709 forms (73.4%) were collected, of which 702 responses (72.7%) were valid. Although less than half (43.2%) have experience in BPT in health service development, more than 80% are willing to perform going forward. Significant factors for both the group with experience in BPT and the group with willingness to perform include an organizational culture that promotes BPT, as well as multiple elements of the workplace environment and facilitating factors related to knowledge and learning. The experienced group recognised the needs for criteria to evaluate the adaptability of best practice, while the willing group, to evaluate the quality of practice. Conclusions: Through a nationwide survey, this research elucidated for the first time the actual conditions of BPT by PHNs in Japan and related factors. The results indicated the importance of developing a system to promote BPT at the workplace level, also highlighted the importance for practitioners and experts, including researchers, to work together to develop practical guidelines to ensure evidence-based practices. The northern region of Portugal has the largest number of companies manufacturing granite and stone products, which has become the region's trademark. In the municipalities of Marco de Canaveses and Penafiel, the economic activity of this area is important. However, the lack of attractiveness of this activity, combined with the high prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis in this population, has led to a growing shortage of labor. In order for this project to be the result of collaborative, integral work centered on the people who are the target of health promotion, we used the Participatory Health Research (PHR) approach, based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, to implement a mixed-methods study, including participant observation, interviews and document analysis. These data were used to co-create a study design. In 2021, a total of 102 interviews were carried out and self-completion surveys were distributed: the Fantastic Lifestyle Questionnaire (FLQ) and the EQ-5D-3L. Within the scope of occupational health nursing and in the field of action of public health nurses, with the interviews and self-completed surveys carried out, we identified potential focuses for occupational health nursing intervention to promote the health of stone industry workers: adherence to protective measures, energy balance deficit, tobacco and alcohol consumption and access to health services. Data analysis made it possible to assess the prevalence of risk behaviors by order and to involve managers and workers in the co-creation of a health promotion program. The accurate identification of the focuses for nursing intervention not only improves the effectiveness of occupational health services, allowing for targeted interventions adapted to workers' needs, but also contributes considerably to health promotion in the workplace, resulting in safer working environments, a reduction in occupational diseases and, consequently, a healthier and more productive workforce. In Norway, public health nurses (PHNs) are responsible for giving parents nutritional knowledge, but limited research describes how they perceive this task. This study explores PHNs' perceptions and experiences on nutritional guidance for parents of infants and toddlers. Semistructured interviews with six PHNs were conducted and transcribed verbatim. Data were subjected to thematic analysis. Five main themes were identified: (1) Dietary guidance for parents is central to the work; (2) PHNs perceive they have parents' trust, and parents are in general open to nutrition counselling; (3) food and meals must be seen in light of the family context; (4) The dialogue must be adapted to the individual family; and (5) PHNs have expertise on nutrition; however, updating knowledge is difficult. Nutritional guidance was perceived by PHNs as a core activity. They felt that they had parents' trust, and that parents were particularly open to nutritional guidance during the first 2 years. Counselling was generally well received, but conversations on overweight were perceived as difficult. PHNs strove to tailor their guidance to individual needs. However, providing guidance on a wide range of issues in different families and cultures could be challenging. They acknowledged a need for updating knowledge but the offer of courses was sparse. Our findings suggest a discrepancy between how nutrition is prioritized in the education of PHNs and what they encounter in clinical practice. Methods/Design: Twenty PHNs who worked during the COVID‐19 outbreak were recruited from seven public health centres through posters. Data were collected through in‐depth interviews that comprised semi‐structured and open‐ended questions; subsequently, the data were analysed through content analysis. Results: Three themes emerged from the study findings, namely (1) the disorderliness of COVID‐19 pandemic prevention work, (2) managing stress and fear, and (3) the establishment of a new normal. Because of the severity of the pandemic, the workload and stress associated with epidemic prevention policies continue to increase. PHNs may infect their family members and experience a sense of alienation and distance. They must also deal with irrationality and reactions in the people within their community. Conclusion: Health department directors and policymakers should provide the necessary support and assistance to frontline pandemic prevention workers to increase the efficiency of pandemic prevention efforts. Early detection of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in children is crucial. Due to COVID-19, maternal and child health services have been suspended temporarily, increasing the risk of late detection of DDH. This study aimed to reveal Japan's current situation regarding community hip screening for newborns and infants and to provide health guidance for caregivers regarding DDH. A web-based, nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted between February and March 2023 (n = 1737). One public health nurse overseeing maternal and child health per municipality responded to the 2022 municipality hip screening system. Among the 436 municipalities that responded (response rate: 25.1%), 97.5% implemented hip screening within 4 months, and approximately 60% performed it during newborn home visits, while only 2.3% conducted hip ultrasound screening. Perfect checking of the risk factors for DDH during newborn home visits and training opportunities for home visitors must be improved. Educational programs regarding DDH for home visitors and caregivers are needed to prevent the late diagnosis of DDH. Furthermore, collaboration between pediatric orthopedic surgeons and nurses is crucial for developing effective community-based hip-screening systems by bridging the evidence and practice gap in the early detection of DDH. Aim: To investigate reflections of public health nurses (PHNs) on implementing the New Families programme, a supplement to the usual Norwegian child health centre programme. It involves user‐led decisions on the content and number of home visits offered by the family's PHN from pregnancy week 28 until the child is 2 years. Design: An interpretive description approach. Methods: Altogether 206 anonymized, undated reflection notes by PHNs becoming familiar with the programme were collected in 2017–2020. NVivo 12 and inductive content analysis were used to convert the data into manageable segments. Results: Focusing on childhood experiences and parental role expectations among prospective parents during home visits was seen as a major shift in the nurses' counselling strategy. Providing relevant information to the parents‐to‐be ahead of a meeting was important. Introduction: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted as a plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity by 2030. SDG 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages, and other goals focus on reduction of inequality, abolition of poverty, decent work for all, and building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions. A community pediatric clinic, Kidscope, was established in a vulnerable Irish community offering free developmental assessment and onward referral of children 0 to 6 years. The Kidscope model involves multiagency input with local public health nurses (PHNs) acting as fundamental partners in the provision of specialist early years support to vulnerable children and families. This study evaluates PHN involvement in Kidscope in the context of SDGs. Objective: To record and understand PHN roles within Kidscope and to capture their contribution to achieving SDGs in a disadvantaged Irish community. Methods: Qualitative stakeholder analysis and mapping design. Snowball sampling identified participants. Data collection involved scoping interviews, questionnaires, one-to-one interviews, and a focus group. A Stakeholder Matrix Table was developed in line with the guiding framework. Transcripts were thematically analyzed. Results: PHNs are key stakeholders in Kidscope contributing to clinic development, delivery, and sustainability. Six themes were identified: lead referrers, in-clinic support, learning and education, child and family follow-up, specialist early years role, and partnership working. PHNs contribute to six SDGs through the Kidscope model. Conclusion: PHNs are fundamental partners in achieving SDGs in a disadvantaged Irish community through ameliorating childhood developmental delay by intercepting the gap within Ireland's early intervention system and disrupting the impact exclusion to healthcare has on vulnerable children and their families. Abstract Aim Clarifying the emotional labor of public health nurses while providing interpersonal support. Design Qualitative descriptive study conducted using content analysis to clarify the aspect of emotional labor of PHNs regarding interpersonal support. Methods Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 28 public health nurses employed by seven city governments in Japan. The data items obtained were categorized using deductive content analysis. Results When attempting interpersonal support, PHNs showed the following aspects of emotional labor: (1) negative emotions towards residents and resident‐focused emotions; (2) emotional rules based on duty performance, emotional rules based on fairness, emotional rules based on intimacy; (3) adaptive emotional regulation, maladaptive emotional regulations and (4) emotional expressions based on friendliness, emotional expressions based on calmness. Conclusion PHNs used adaptive emotional regulation in some cases and sometimes resorted to maladaptive forms. A system of support should be established to ensure the smooth and effective provision of interpersonal support.

Abstract Background Supporting parents with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) requires knowledge, skills, and a positive attitude toward parenthood. We developed a Japanese e-learning program for public health nurses (PHNs) to enable them to support parents with SPMI and their family members. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the program in improving the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and self-efficacy of PHNs in supporting them. Methods A three-hour video-based e-learning program was developed. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 176 PHNs responsible for maternal and child health in Japan. The outcome measures included the Sense of Coping Difficulty/Possibility Scale, skills to support people with SPMI, and achievement of program goals. Outcome data were collected at three time points during the study: baseline (T1), post-intervention (T2), and one month after T2 (T3) using self-administered electronic questionnaires. Outcome measures were assessed by comparing the two groups at the endpoint (T3) using t-tests and ANOVA. Effectiveness over time was assessed using a mixed model for repeated measures, with group and time interactions as fixed effects. Results The study participants were randomly allocated to two groups:89 in the intervention group, and 87 in the control group. Aim: To investigate midwives' (MWs) and public health nurses' (PHNs) clinical practice and knowledge related to nutrition, with a particular focus on iodine in northern parts of Norway. Maternal iodine status prior to and during pregnancy, and the lactating period, is crucial for brain development and growth of the foetus and infant, from conception up until the first two years of life. In Norway, studies have documented mild to moderate iodine deficiency in this group. Design/Methods: MWs (n = 128) and PHNs (n = 154) responded to a survey regarding nutrition and iodine. Descriptive data and non‐parametric tests were used to analyse data. Results: Around half of the participants provided dietary guidance to a great extent. Practice of iodine‐specific recommendations was lower, particularly regarding lactating women. Compared to other nutrients, iodine was not a priority. Background: In primary health care people with mental health needs are often overlooked or masked with physical complaints. It has been suggested that public health nurses lack sufficient knowledge when encountering people with mental health problems. Low levels of mental health literacy among professionals are associated with negative patient outcome. There is a need to understand public health nurses process and strategies used when encountering a person with mental health problems in order to promote mental health. This study aimed to construct a theory that explains the process of public health nurses experience when encountering people with mental health problems based on their knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about mental health. Methods: A constructivist grounded theory design was used to meet the aim of the study. Interviews were conducted with 13 public health nurses working in primary health care between October 2019 and June 2021, and the data analysis was performed according to the principles of Charmaz. Results: The core category, "Public health nurses as a relationship builder – to initiate the dialogue" reflected the process while the main categories "Being on your own", "Being on top of things- knowing your limits", and "Professional comfort zone" reflected conditions that were decisive for initiating a dialogue. Conclusion: Managing mental health encounters in primary health care was a personal and complex decision-making process that depends on the public health nurses' professional comfort zone and acquired mental health literacy. Aims: To explore the value of social activities and the prerequisites for continuous participation among rural older adults based on their experiences. Design: Qualitative, descriptive design. Methods: Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 14 older adults from voluntary community salons in a rural area in Japan. Participants were selected through purposeful sampling. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist were used. Results: Four values of social activities were identified: "Mutual benefit connectedness," "Preventing and coping with aging," "Making life brilliant 'now'," and "Building a safety net." Three prerequisites for activities were identified: "Do not overreach," "Do not infringe on personal territory," and "Do not go against community norms." Social activities provide rural older adults with reciprocity ties, coping with aging, enhanced daily lives, and a social safety net. Continued participation in rural social activities requires adherence to cultural norms and moderation of relationship distances. During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses were the frontline and tireless healthcare workers providing their services to patients. At the same time, the role of nurses was not only limited to providing health care to COVID-19 patients, but was also crucial on the public health issues. For example, nurses played a key role in primary health care through both COVID-19 vaccination and through the collection of samples for coronavirus diagnostic testing in health centers, local health units and mobile health units. For example, nurses in primary health care were responsible for receiving, storing and safely administering vaccines against COVID-19. The cornerstones of public health nursing applications combine the principles and values of public health and nursing to create the right conditions for promoting the health of individuals and communities. Continuing education of nurses is extremely important, as they need to constantly update and enrich their knowledge in a clinical environment that is constantly changing, as exemplified by the huge changes brought about by the pandemic worldwide. There are several challenges and opportunities for public health nurses after the COVID-19 pandemic. The role of nurses is particularly important in the case of vulnerable populations. The role of school nurses is particularly important, as children are a vulnerable population group as they rely on adults to meet their needs. As children are in school for a large part of the day, everyone involved in their care should work together to meet their needs as best as possible. Japanese public health nurses (PHNs) at public health centers (PHCs) have played critical roles in infection prevention and control during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to examine the actual pandemic-related experiences of PHNs and the relation between their experiences, individual resilience, two components of organizational resilience (system and human resilience), and burnout. An analysis of the responses of 351 PHNs revealed that mid-level PHNs scored higher in experience and lower in organizational resilience compared with those in other positions. More than 80% of respondents experienced inappropriate staff allocation. Multiple regression revealed that burnout was positively associated with the components of the experience of PHNs and negatively with individual and human resilience. In hierarchical multiple regression with depersonalization as the dependent variable, the sign of system resilience reversed from negative to positive when human resilience was added. The results highlight the need to prepare for future health crises including establishing a system with enough personnel, promoting human resilience such as collaboration among staff members, and burnout prevention measures, especially among mid-level PHNs. The study also described alternative approaches to comprehend system resilience—namely, a suppression variable of human resilience, promotion of depersonalization, and multicollinearity—and the need for further research on organizational resilience. Background: In an increasingly multicultural society, cultural competence and transcultural self-efficacy of public health nurses is important for providing culturally congruent care for client from diverse cultural background. To improv this, it is needed tailored and effective educational program based on the cultural competence educational needs. This study investigated the moderating effect of cultural competence educational needs on the relationship between transcultural self-efficacy and cultural competence. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 217 public health nurses in Korea using convenience sampling from August 2018 to January 2019. A direct questionnaire was used to collect data. Study variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and the Hayes PROCESS macro (Model 1) moderation model. Results: The mean scores for transcultural self-efficacy, cultural competence educational needs, and cultural competence were 62.33 ± 11.08, 58.19 ± 15.08, and 97.96 ± 17.09, respectively. Transcultural self-efficacy and cultural competence educational needs were positively associated with cultural competence. In the tested model, cultural competence educational needs had a conditional moderating effect on the relationship between transcultural self-efficacy and cultural competence. The positive association between transcultural self-efficacy and cultural competence was significant at low, medium, and high levels of cultural competence educational needs and stronger for those with high needs. Conclusions: Cultural competence educational needs may be an important determinant of cultural competence among public health nurses. To effectively increase cultural competence, transcultural self-efficacy should be increased by education programs tailored by cultural competence educational needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study investigated the association between receiving off‐the‐job training and the involvement of public health nurses in local healthcare planning. Design: A nationwide, cross‐sectional study design. Methods: We sent self‐report questionnaires to 2,185 public health nurses with experience in developing local healthcare plans in Japan since 2013 and collected information related to three main categories: demographic data, involvement in local healthcare planning and strategies for healthcare planning. Results: We received 1,281 responses (return rate of 58.6%), of which 231 did not meet the inclusion criteria. Thus, we analysed 1,050 valid responses. Among the 1,050 respondents, 496 (47.2%) had received off‐the‐job training in healthcare planning. A subsequent logistic regression analysis revealed that the following factors were associated with this achievement: holding a managerial position, receiving healthcare planning education at the undergraduate level, having mentors regarding the promotion of it, partially conducting cross‐sectional coordination and conducting groupwork with community‐dwelling residents. Nursing theories focus on individual and community care and human relationships in unique contexts. One of these contexts is the community in which a theory-based systematic nursing practice process is warranted. This article describes a theory of Community Caring for Public Health Nursing (CCPHN), which is grounded in four nursing metaparadigms by Fawcett: persons, environment, health, and nursing. This theory has three assumptions: (1) community caring fosters care demonstrations in nursing, (2) caring communities comprise members with community attachments united by their common values rather than rigid customs, and (3) community caring is expressed competently in mutual-care practices. From these assumptions, a nursing perspective supporting the community caring process is exhibited as the expression of caring by public health nurses toward supportive and promotive nursing processes that enhance a caring community. Nurses play critical roles in leading the establishment of caring communities. In future research, it is critical to verify whether building a caring community by public health nursing practices based on this theory of CCPHN contributes to the health and well-being of the people in the community. A disaster can be delineated as an occurrence that threatens and disrupts people's lives and means of subsistence caused by natural, non-natural, and human factors, resulting in loss of life, environmental damage, loss of property, and psychological consequences. As a flexible profession that covers all conditions, nurses, particularly PHNs, are expected to be limited to providing care in the community and required to work in conditions of disaster emergency response. This literature review aims to identify the knowledge and perceived ability to practice of PHNs in the disaster emergency response phase. The study is based on a systematic review approach. The source of information for the present study derived from Internet-based literature, in the form of research results from online libraries at the local, national and international levels. Totally 43 references were used to establish this review study. The knowledge and perceived ability to practice PHNs in the disaster response phase will typically be identified in six viewpoints: warning, triage of disasters, saving and stabilizing lives, surveillance, risk communication, and technical skills. Therefore, handling situations among the alert and steady states is quite atypical; hence nurses must skillfully and technically deal with these conditions.

Abstract Background Although child health services are well established in Norway, the use of information technology for the systematic collection of evidence-based child- and proxy-reported health measures may be beneficial in the early identification of child development problems. The Norwegian “Starting Right™” health service innovation consists of parent- and child-reported online structured health assessments tools, including practical routines for child and school health assessments. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of child and school health nurses with the Starting Right innovation. Methods We used a qualitative design and conducted three focus group interviews with 18 child and school health nurses from three child health centres one year after the implementation of the innovation. Results The experiences of professionals with the Starting Right innovation were captured by three themes: (1) the digital innovation could be used to obtain a good overview of a child’s health and development; (2) interpreting the questionnaires was a challenge; and (3) implementing the new digital innovation was time-consuming. Conclusions Overall, the child and school health nurses experienced that the Starting Right innovation was useful for providing a comprehensive overview of child development and health. The challenges related to interpreting the parents’ scores and follow-up of children, as well as providing the questionnaires in relevant foreign languages, should be addressed to allow all children and families to be reached.

Abstract Public health nurses are performing various roles during the COVID-19 pandemic: counseling, surveillance, specimen collection, epidemiological investigation, education, and vaccination. This study investigated their disaster competencies in the context of emerging infectious diseases, and identified their influencing factors based on Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory. A convenience sample of 242 was selected from public health nurses working in a metropolitan city of South Korea. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS Statistics ver. 23.0. Results showed that the significant factors influencing disaster competencies included “willingness to respond to a disaster,” “preventive behavior,” “experience of receiving education on emerging infectious diseases response,” “public health center experience,” “job satisfaction,” and “education.” This regression model explained 33.2% of the variance in disaster competencies. “Willingness to respond to a disaster” was the strongest factor affecting disaster competencies. Based on these results, it is concluded that interventions to improve disaster competencies and psychological well-being of public health nurses are needed. Additionally, strategies such as creating a supportive work environment, deploying experienced nurses primarily on the front line, and reducing the tasks of permanent public health nurses should be implemented.

Background: Effective prevention programs to address the high prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity and the concomitant health consequences have been warranted. Objective: To improve dietary habits and weight status among Norwegian children with overweight/obesity in the primary care setting. Design: A 6-month non-randomized cluster-controlled intervention among 137 children, aged 6-12 years, with overweight/obesity and their parents. Intervention and control groups were recruited by public health nurses and followed-up by 12 Healthy Life Centers across Norway. The intervention group received individual family counseling and participated in nutrition courses and physical activity groups. A frequency questionnaire assessing sociodemographic characteristics and dietary habits was completed by the parents. Trained public health nurses measured height and weight using standardized methods to calculate body mass index (BMI) and BMI z-scores. Results: The intervention resulted in an increased odds of consuming evening meals (OR: 3.42), a decreased availability of salty snacks (β = -0.17), a decreased intake of salty snacks (-0.18), an increased consumption of water (β = 0.20), and a decreased estimated total intake of energy (β = -0.17), carbohydrates (β = -0.17), mono- and disaccharides (β = -0.21), sucrose (β = -0.24), and saturated fatty acids (β = --0.17). The intervention directly predicted lower BMI z-score (β = -0.17), and post-treatment levels of energy (β = -0.65), saturated fat (β = 0.43), and total carbohydrates (β = 0.41) were directly linked to BMI z-score after intervention. Age and sex were indirectly associated with BMI after intervention through energy and saturated fat intake. Conclusions: The intervention had a beneficial impact on nutrient intake and weight status among children with overweight/obesity. These findings provide support for implementing complex intervention programs tailored to local primary care settings. Trial registration: Clinicaltrials.gov, NCT02290171. Registered 13. Adolescent health (AH) is an integral part of public health with the goal of improving the healthy development, safety, and well-being of adolescents because the behavioral patterns established during this period influence the health status of the adolescents and the risk of developing chronic diseases during adulthood. Adolescence being a time of great physical and psychological change, many social and physical conditions as well as behavioral pattern can impact AH and heighten the risk of illness and diseases. This makes adolescents to be susceptible to various health issues by nature because of their stages of development, which affects their ability to make safe decisions, and the need to rely on significant others for support. Other factors like desire for greater autonomy, pressure to conform to peers, exploration of sexual identity, increased access to and use of technology, violence and sexual abuse, social and cultural norms, family circumstances, emotional and physical environment of the adolescents contribute significantly to adolescents' health issues. Therefore, nurses have significant roles to play to ensure optimal growth and development of the adolescents and to prevent and reduce the impact of changes associated with adolescence on the health and well-being of the adolescents. Background: Supporting parents with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) requires knowledge, skills, and a positive attitude toward parenthood. We developed a Japanese e-learning program for public health nurses (PHNs) to enable them to support parents with SPMI and their family members. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the program in improving the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and self-efficacy of PHNs in supporting them. Methods: A three-hour video-based e-learning program was developed. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 176 PHNs responsible for maternal and child health in Japan. The outcome measures included the Sense of Coping Difficulty/Possibility Scale, skills to support people with SPMI, and achievement of program goals. Outcome data were collected at three time points during the study: baseline (T1), post-intervention (T2), and one month after T2 (T3) using self-administered electronic questionnaires. Outcome measures were assessed by comparing the two groups at the endpoint (T3) using t-tests and ANOVA. Effectiveness over time was assessed using a mixed model for repeated measures, with group and time interactions as fixed effects. Results: The study participants were randomly allocated to two groups:89 in the intervention group, and 87 in the control group. The total score and the scores in the two subscales of the Sense of Coping Difficulty/Possibility Scale in the intervention group at T3 were significantly higher than those in the control group, as shown by the t-test and ANOVA (all p<0.001). The Sense of Coping Difficulty subscale had a large effect size (Cohen’s d=1.27). The analysis of the results of a mixed model for repeated measures showed that the group and time interactions on all outcome measures were not significantly different at T1 but were significantly different at T2 and T3. Conclusions: The program was effective one month after its completion, particularly in reducing PHNs’ difficulties in supporting parents with SPMI. Background: There are a substantial number of children who are the next of kin of parents suffering from illness or substance abuse. These children can experience emotional and behavioral problems and may need support from professionals. In Norway, the specialist health service in hospitals is required to have a designated practitioner in each department to ensure support for and follow up of children who are next of kin; however, this is not regulated by law in the health care in the municipalities. The aim of this study was to explore public health nurse's experiences working with children who are next of kin.Methods: Qualitative interviews were conducted with 10 public health nurses working in the child health clinic and the school health service in four municipalities. Data were analysed using content analysis. Reporting of this study is conducted in accordance to COREQ's checklist.Results: The analysis resulted in one main theme: 'Lack of guidelines and routines among public health nurses working with children who are next of kin'. The main theme consisted of four categories: (1) identifying children who are next of kin are incidental; (2) public health nurses must be observant and willing to act; (3) communication is an important tool; and (4) follow up over time is not always provided.Conclusion: The public health nurses experienced uncertainty concerning how to identify and follow up children who are next of kin but were vigilant and willing to act in the children's best interest. Doing so necessitated collaboration with other professionals. The need for guidelines around the role and responsibilities for the public health nurse were emphasized. The knowledge provided by the current study offers valuable insight into strengths and limitations in the support of children who are next of kin and can inform stakeholders in organizing sustainable support for this group. Background/Objectives: The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident underscored the critical role of public health nurses (PHNs) in managing evacuees during nuclear emergencies. Despite their importance, PHNs often lack sufficient knowledge and experience, which may make them anxious about this role. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with PHNs' anxiety about accepting evacuees and identify strategies to alleviate this anxiety. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 100 PHNs working in Oita Prefecture, Japan, a region designated to receive evacuees in the event of a nuclear disaster. Data were collected via an online questionnaire assessing radiation knowledge, workplace characteristics, and anxiety about accepting evacuees. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the predictors of anxiety. Results: PHNs working in prefectural offices were 3.4 times more likely to feel anxious about accepting evacuees than those in municipal offices (OR = 3.488, 95% CI = 1.236-10.963, p = 0.023). Awareness of evacuation site responsibilities significantly reduced anxiety (OR = 0.412, 95% CI = 0.134-1.211, p = 0.110). Overall, knowledge of radiation was low, with only 8% correctly identifying the differences between stochastic and deterministic effects. Online training was the preferred format for education. Conclusions: Workplace characteristics and knowledge of evacuation responsibilities significantly influence PHNs' anxiety levels. Addressing knowledge gaps through tailored, accessible training programs, particularly in online formats, is essential. Strengthening preparedness among PHNs could enhance their confidence and ability to manage evacuees effectively during nuclear disasters.

Implementation of a Virtual Nurse Residency Program for Public Health Nurses: A Pilot Study Background: Nursing retention is a growing concern for many healthcare organizations. One of the Georgia Department of Public Health’s goals is to improve the recruitment and retention rates of public health nurses in the state. In this cohort study of nurses with less than 18 months of experience in public health, pre and post-tests were conducted to measure stress, confidence, job satisfaction, and public health core competencies. Methods: The participants took part in asynchronous and synchronous online content led by public health professionals. These two modules included content in an overview of public health and communicable diseases. A debriefing allowed participants to provide feedback about the program. Results: Comparative analysis showed a significant increase in the mean scores for Module 1 M=57 (SD=11.43) and the mean for the post-Module 1 assessment M=83.86 (SD= 5.67). A significant improvement in the mean of the second module pre-assessment mean was also found M=57 (SD=14) compared to the post-assessment M=91.4 (SD= 12.91) for public health core competencies. Conclusions: This project validated that public health nurses who participate in an online residency program may benefit as demonstrated by improved scores in public health competencies and reported positive experiences in the program.

The provision of health services to the community based on the professional attitudes and behavior of nurses will increase public trust and reduce negative perceptions such as inappropriate actions, lack of skills, lack of communication with patients and lack of speed in responding to patient complaints. The study aimed to determinants that influence the professional behavior of nurses in health centers in Indonesia. An analytic observational study with a cross sectional research design, it was conducted for two months, from August to October 2022. We involved 227 nurses working in 50 puskesmas in Jember Regency, East Java, Indonesia. There are 3 new findings in this study, the following is an explanation of the research findings (1) the professional behavior of nurses is influenced by sociodemographic factors, individual factors, and psychological factors, (2) the determinants that have a major influence on nurses' professional behavior are individual factors, ( 3) Individual factors are reflected by indicators of competence and ability of nurses, (4) The better the competence and ability of nurses, the better the professional behavior of nurses. The professional behavior of nurses is influenced by sociodemographic factors, individual factors, and psychological factors.
