The aim of this research was to establish prevalence estimates for aphantasia, hypophantasia, typical imagery ability, and hyperphantasia in a large multi-national cohort. In Study 1, the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire was completed by 3,049 participants. Results indicated prevalence estimates of 1.2% for aphantasia, 3% for hypophantasia, 89.9% for typical imagery ability, and 5.9% for hyperphantasia. In Study 2, to replicate these findings in a larger sample, the Study 1 data were combined with openly available data from previous prevalence studies to create a total sample of 9,063 participants. Re-analysis of this data confirmed prevalence estimates of 0.9% for aphantasia, 3.3% for hypophantasia, 89.7% for typical imagery ability, and 6.1% for hyperphantasia. These robust and up-to-date estimates provide enhanced clarity to researchers regarding the prevalence of differing visual imagery abilities and provide a platform for future studies exploring the role of visual imagery in various cognitive and behavioral tasks. In visual-imagery-based brain–computer interface (VI-BCI), there are problems of singleness of imagination task and insufficient description of feature information, which seriously hinder the development and application of VI-BCI technology in the field of restoring communication. In this paper, we design and optimize a multi-character classification scheme based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals of visual imagery (VI), which is used to classify 29 characters including 26 lowercase English letters and three punctuation marks. Firstly, a new paradigm of randomly presenting characters and including preparation stage is designed to acquire EEG signals and construct a multi-character dataset, which can eliminate the influence between VI tasks. Secondly, tensor data is obtained by the Morlet wavelet transform, and a feature extraction algorithm based on tensor—uncorrelated multilinear principal component analysis is used to extract high-quality features. Finally, three classifiers, namely support vector machine, K-nearest neighbor, and extreme learning machine, are employed for classifying multi-character, and the results are compared. The experimental results demonstrate that, the proposed scheme effectively extracts character features with minimal redundancy, weak correlation, and strong representation capability, and successfully achieves an average classification accuracy 97.59% for 29 characters, surpassing existing research in terms of both accuracy and quantity of classification. The present study designs a new paradigm for acquiring EEG signals of VI, and combines the Morlet wavelet transform and UMPCA algorithm to extract the character features, enabling multi-character classification in various classifiers. Background: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) are a common complaint in adult and elderly men with bladder outlet obstruction, and have a considerable impact on their quality of life. Symptoms affect storage, voiding and post micturition stages. Among the latter, a feeling of incomplete emptying is one of the most bothersome for the patients; a condition that in turn contributes to affect urinary urgency, nocturia and frequency. Common recommendations include self-management practices (e.g., control of fluid intake, double-voiding and distraction techniques) to relieve patients' symptoms, whose effectiveness, however, is under debate. Methods: In this report we describe two pioneering procedures to favor bladder residual content voiding in people complaining of LUTS disorders. The first is based on motor imagery and the second on the use of odors. The beneficial effects of Mental imagery techniques on various tasks (e.g., in the treatment of several pathological conditions or as valid mnemonics aids have a long tradition and have received consistently experimental support. Thus, a patient (a 68-year-old Caucasian man) complaining of LUTS was trained to use a motor imagery technique (building up a visual image comprising the bladder, the detrusor muscle and the urethra, and to imagine the detrusor muscle contracting and the flow of urine expelled) for 90 days and two odors (coffee and a lavender scented cleanser) for 10 days, as a trigger for micturition. He was asked to record—immediately after the first morning micturition—the time interval between the first (free) and the second (cued) micturition. Results: Reported data suggest the efficacy of motor imagery in favoring the bladder residual urine voiding in a few minutes (M = 4.75 min.) compared to the control condition, i.e., the baseline of the patient (M = 79.5 min.), while no differences between the odor-based procedures (M 1st odorant = 70.6 min.; M 2nd odorant = 71.1 min) and the latter were observed. Conclusions: A procedure based on an imagery technique may, therefore, be of general value—as a suggested protocol—and accordingly can be applicable to clinical settings. This review article explores how metaphors and analogies used throughout urban history can simulate mental imagery to inspire innovation. The study addresses three critical questions using qualitative literature review methods like text data mining and content analysis. The results yielded from the first question showed a link between mental imagery and architectural discourse. The second question yielded the crucial role of metaphor and analogy as literary devices that can enhance mental imagery. The answer to the third question yielded five procedures of how literary devices foster innovation. The discussion found a complex interplay between recalling mental imagery and imagination and using metaphors and analogies. While recognizing their effectiveness in inspiring innovative ideas, the review cautions against oversimplification and cultural biases. The review of literature offers a nuanced understanding of their theoretical and practical foundations, shedding light on their role in shaping architectural mental imagery within urban history narratives.

In 2018 we published research showing that fifteen individuals who self-identified as having aphantasia also demonstrated a lack of sensory visual imagery when undergoing the binocular rivalry imagery paradigm, suggesting more than just a metacognitive difference. Here we update these findings with over fifty participants with aphantasia and show that there is evidence for a lack of sensory imagery in aphantasia. How the binocular rivalry paradigm scores relate to the vividness of visual imagery questionnaire (VVIQ) and how aphantasia can be confirmed is discussed.

Many images used in media and advertising employ visual metaphors that provide enjoyment and storytelling. This study employed an image perception questionnaire to evaluate high school students’ image preferences. The results revealed that among the adjectives provided by the researcher, high school students exhibited higher preferences for describing images as creative, symbolic, cultural, artistic, contrasting, serious, exaggerated, and rational imagery. According to the independent sample t-test results, a pronounced gender difference existed in the preference of selection from the ‘Conservative–Creative’ adjective pair to describe images. Additionally, male and female students displayed higher preferences for describing fusion metaphorical images as ‘natural’ and ‘cultural’, respectively. The preferences of students of different genders for metaphorical images were considerably influenced by the conservative, creative, natural, or cultural elements of the images. According to the results of the chi-square test of independence and phi correlation coefficient test, gender exhibited a significant but low correlation with students’ preferences for juxtaposed and replacement metaphorical images. The findings of this study can provide valuable insights for art educators to gain a deeper understanding of gender differences in students’ image assessments and preferences when viewing images, helping them select appropriate visual teaching materials.

This research analyses the image of women in the most listened music videos made by women in reggaeton, a genre known for the sexualization of women. The main purpose is to learn whether female artists recreate those gender stereotypes, or whether they offer alternate discourses. Through the triangulation of the narrative analysis, it has been determined that female reggaeton artists maintain the visual imagery that sexualises women, although almost half of the songs show a new image for women, who enjoy sex as a way to free themselves. In addition, Loren has atypical experiences of a number of visual phenomena that involve an extrapolation or integration of visual information across space. In this perspective, we describe Loren's atypical experiences of a number of visual phenomena, and we suggest these ensue because her visual experiences are not strongly shaped by inhibitory feedback or by prior expectations. We describe Loren as having Deep Aphantasia, and Derek as shallow, as for both a paucity of feedback might prevent the generation of imagined visual experiences, but for Loren this additionally seems to disrupt activity at a sufficiently early locus to cause atypical experiences of actual visual inputs. Our purpose in describing these subjective experiences is to alert others to the possibility of there being sub-classes of congenital aphantasia, one of which--Deep Aphantasia, would be characterized by atypical experiences of actual visual inputs. To further develop scientific food packaging design methods, providing consumers with more accurate and prompt food packaging information, the article comprehensively analyzed three types of key cues for food packaging information communication: textual information, food imagery and cross-modal correspondence by integrating domestic and international related literature, and pointed out that textual information was more advantageous in the process of conveying information, positive slogans are more influential, and other detailed information would reduce consumer cognitive bias. Text is more suitable for expressing food functions, while pictures are more suitable for expressing sensory appeals. Secondly, package imagery had a significant impact on consumer perception and response, and visual fidelity implied healthier choices. Consumer perceptions of the food on the package will affect their evaluation of the package contents, and the study of cross-modal correspondences is an important path towards a more scientific, specific and precise approach to package design.

Visual imagery, or the mental simulation of visual information from memory, could serve as an effective control paradigm for a brain-computer interface (BCI) due to its ability to directly convey the user’s intention with many natural ways of envisioning an intended action. However, multiple initial investigations into using visual imagery as a BCI control strategies have been unable to fully evaluate the capabilities of true spontaneous visual mental imagery. One major limitation in these prior works is that the target image is typically displayed immediately preceding the imagery period. This paradigm does not capture spontaneous mental imagery as would be necessary in an actual BCI application but something more akin to short-term retention in visual working memory. Results from the present study show that short-term visual imagery following the presentation of a specific target image provides a stronger, more easily classifiable neural signature in EEG than spontaneous visual imagery from long-term memory following an auditory cue for the image. We also show that short-term visual imagery and visual perception share commonalities in the most predictive electrodes and spectral features. However, visual imagery received greater influence from frontal electrodes whereas perception was mostly confined to occipital electrodes. This suggests that visual perception is primarily driven by sensory information whereas visual imagery has greater contributions from areas associated with memory and attention. This work provides the first direct comparison of short-term and long-term visual imagery tasks and provides greater insight into the feasibility of using visual imagery as a BCI control strategy.

People with aphantasia exhibit the inability to voluntarily generate or form mental imagery in their minds. Since the term “aphantasia” was proposed to describe this, it has gained increasing attention from psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and clinicians. Previous studies have mainly focused on the definition, prevalence, and measurement of aphantasia, its impacts on individuals’ cognitive and emotional processing, and theoretical frameworks synthesizing existing findings, which have contributed greatly to our understanding of aphantasia. However, there are still some debates regarding the conclusions derived from existing research and the theories that were constructed from various sources of evidence. Building upon existing endeavors, this systematic review emphasizes that future research is much needed to refine the definition and diagnosis of aphantasia, strengthen empirical investigations at behavioral and neural levels, and, more importantly, develop or update theories. These multiple lines of efforts could lead to a deeper understanding of aphantasia and further guide researchers in future research directions.

It has been suggested that visual images are memorized across brief periods of time by vividly imagining them as if they were still there. In line with this, the contents of both working memory and visual imagery are known to be encoded already in early visual cortex. If these signals in early visual areas were indeed to reflect a combined imagery and memory code, one would predict them to be weaker for individuals with reduced visual imagery vividness. Here, we systematically investigated this question in two groups of participants. Strong and weak imagers were asked to remember images across brief delay periods. We were able to reliably reconstruct the memorized stimuli from early visual cortex during the delay. Importantly, in contrast to the prediction, the quality of reconstruction was equally accurate for both strong and weak imagers. The decodable information also closely reflected behavioral precision in both groups, suggesting it could contribute to behavioral performance, even in the extreme case of completely aphantasic individuals. This pattern exemplifies the importance of visual imagery as an element of meaning in television fantasy—an element that Buffy notably helped to explore and that Grimm further advances.

Abstract Background Increasing numbers of people are living with mild cognitive impairment in later life and seeking therapy to maintain cognition to remain as independent as possible in daily life. Based on a review of the literature, an app-based programme using perceptual-encoding strategies called Enhancing Memory in Daily Life (E-MinD Life) was developed. An expert panel reviewed the programme’s appropriateness for older people with and without mild cognitive impairment. As part of the design process, the feasibility and acceptability of the E-MinD Life programme were then assessed in relation to its use by healthy older adults, with findings informing the application of the programme to older people with mild cognitive impairment in the future. Methods Phase 1: The E-MinD Life programme was reviewed by an expert panel of occupational therapists. Experts rated the programme on a Likert scale and answered open-ended questions in relation to feasibility, clarity, and relevancy. Phase 2 involved field-testing the 9-week programme with a sample of nine healthy older people. Participants rated the acceptability of the programme on a Likert scale questionnaire. Data on recruitment rates and retention, and adherence and duration of sessions were collected to determine the feasibility of the programme. Responses to the Likert scale were analysed using descriptive statistics. Open-ended responses were categorised qualitatively using a constant comparative approach. Results Phase 1: Experts indicated that the E-MinD Life programme was feasible and included relevant activities for community living. Although experts felt that an older user with mild NCD would be able to independently complete the programme, the qualitative analysis suggests formatting changes in future iterations of the programme to enhance visual clarity. Phase 2: All participants completed the 9-week programme. The average number of self-administered sessions attempted over the 9-week period was 13.44 (SD = 6.73) out of 18 scheduled sessions. Overall, most participants found the programme relevant, logical and easy to understand, and perceived it to be effective for functional cognitive problems. Conclusion The E-MinD Life programme shows promise for inclusion into trial designs to determine the effectiveness of the cognitive strategy programme for older people with and without cognitive impairment. Humans constantly receive massive amounts of information, both perceived from the external environment and imagined from the internal world. To function properly, the brain needs to correctly identify the origin of information being processed. Recent work has suggested common neural substrates for perception and imagery. However, it has remained unclear how the brain differentiates between external and internal experiences with shared neural codes. Here we tested this question in human participants (male and female) by systematically investigating the neural processes underlying the generation and maintenance of visual information from voluntary imagery, veridical perception, and illusion. The inclusion of illusion allowed us to differentiate between objective and subjective internality: while illusion has an objectively internal origin and can be viewed as involuntary imagery, it is also subjectively perceived as having an external origin like perception. Combining fMRI, eye-tracking, multivariate decoding, and encoding approaches, we observed superior orientation representations in parietal cortex during imagery compared with perception, and conversely in early visual cortex. This imagery dominance gradually developed along a posterior-to-anterior cortical hierarchy from early visual to parietal cortex, emerged in the early epoch of imagery and sustained into the delay epoch, and persisted across varied imagined contents. Moreover, representational strength of illusion was more comparable to imagery in early visual cortex, but more comparable to perception in parietal cortex, suggesting content-specific representations in parietal cortex differentiate between subjectively internal and external experiences, as opposed to early visual cortex. Aphantasia--a condition wherein individuals have a reduced or absent construction of voluntary visual imagery--is diagnosed using either the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ) or self-identification. However, a significant discrepancy exists between the proportions of aphantasia in the populations assessed using these two criteria. It is unclear why the reported proportions differ excessively and what percentage of people cannot form visual imagery. We investigated the replicability of the proportion of people with aphantasia using both criteria in the same population of participants. Therefore, we explored the potential causes of the discrepancy and characteristics of putative aphantasia in terms of multisensory imagery, cognitive style, and face recognition ability. First, we conducted an online sampling study (Study 1: N = 2,871) using the VVIQ, self-identification of a reduction in visual imagery, Questionnaire upon Mental Imagery (QMI), and Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire (VVQ). We found that 3.7 and 12.1% fulfilled the VVIQ and self-identification criteria, respectively, roughly replicating the proportions reported in previous studies. The self-identification criterion--but not the VVIQ criterion--contains items related to face recognition; hence, we suspected that face recognition ability was factor contributing to this discrepancy and conducted another online sampling study (Study 2: N = 774). We found a significant correlation between VVIQ and face recognition ability in the control group with self-identification, but not in the group defined by low VVIQ (VVIQ =32). As the participants in the control group with self-identification tended to exhibit moderately high VVIQ scores but low face recognition ability, we reason that the discrepancy can be partially explained by the contamination of individual differences in face recognition ability. Additional analyses of Study 1 revealed that the aphantasia group included participants who lacked all types of sensory imagery or only visual imagery in multisensory imagery and exhibited a non-specific cognitive style. This study indicates that the VVIQ alone may be insufficient to diagnose individuals who report an inability to form visual imagery. Humans possess an intuitive understanding of the environment's physical properties and dynamics, which allows them to predict the outcomes of physical scenarios and successfully interact with the physical world. This predictive ability is thought to rely on mental simulations and has been shown to involve frontoparietal areas. Here, we investigate whether such mental simulations may be accompanied by visual imagery of the predicted physical scene. We designed an intuitive physical inference task requiring participants to infer the parabolic trajectory of an occluded ball falling in accordance with Newtonian physics. Participants underwent fMRI while (i) performing the physical inference task alternately with a visually matched control task, and (ii) passively observing falling balls depicting the trajectories that had to be inferred during the physical inference task. We found that performing the physical inference task activates early visual areas together with a frontoparietal network when compared with the control task. Using multivariate pattern analysis, we show that these regions contain information specific to the trajectory of the occluded ball (i.e., fall direction), despite the absence of visual inputs. Using a cross‐classification approach, we further show that in early visual areas, trajectory‐specific activity patterns evoked by the physical inference task resemble those evoked by the passive observation of falling balls. Together, our findings suggest that participants simulated the ball trajectory when solving the task, and that the outcome of these simulations may be represented in form of the perceivable sensory consequences in early visual areas. The perception and imagery of landmarks activate similar content‐dependent brain areas, including occipital and temporo‐medial brain regions. However, how these areas interact during visual perception and imagery of scenes, especially when recollecting their spatial location, remains unknown. Here, we combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), resting‐state functional connectivity (rs‐fc), and effective connectivity to assess spontaneous fluctuations and task‐induced modulation of signals among regions entailing scene‐processing, the primary visual area and the hippocampus (HC), responsible for the retrieval of stored information. First, we functionally defined the scene‐selective regions, that is, the occipital place area (OPA), the retrosplenial complex (RSC) and the parahippocampal place area (PPA), by using the face/scene localizer, observing that two portions of the PPA—anterior and posterior PPA—were consistently activated in all subjects. Second, the rs‐fc analysis (n = 77) revealed a connectivity pathway similar to the one described in macaques, showing separate connectivity routes linking the anterior PPA with RSC and HC, and the posterior PPA with OPA. Third, we used dynamic causal modelling to evaluate whether the dynamic couplings among these regions differ between perception and imagery of familiar landmarks during a fMRI task (n = 16). We found a positive effect of HC on RSC during the retrieval of imagined places and an effect of occipital regions on both RSC and pPPA during the perception of scenes. Overall, we propose that under similar functional architecture at rest, different neural interactions take place between regions in the occipito‐temporal higher‐level visual cortex and the HC, subserving scene perception and imagery. In this study, we investigated whether global MI, as well as its components (i.e., kinesthetic MI, internal visual MI, and external visual MI) moderate the effect of attentional focus on performance in a group of ninety-two young adult novice air-pistol shooters (age: M = 21.87, SD = 2.54). After completing the movement imagery questionnaire-3 (MIQ-3), participants were asked to complete a pistol shooting experiment in three different attentional focus conditions: (1) No focus instruction condition (control condition with no verbal instruction) (2) an internal focus instruction condition, and (3) an external focus condition. Shot accuracy, performance time, and aiming trace speed (i.e., stability of hold or weapon stability) were measured as the performance variables. Results revealed that shot accuracy was significantly poorer during internal relative to control focus condition. In addition, performance time was significantly higher during external relative to both control and internal condition. However, neither global MI, nor its subscales, moderated the effects of attentional focus on performance. This study supports the importance of attentional focus for perceptual and motor performance, yet global MI and its modalities/perspectives did not moderate pistol shooting performance. This study suggests that perception and action are cognitively controlled by attentional mechanisms, but not motor imagery. Future research with complementary assessment modalities is warranted to extend the present findings.

This research focuses on revealing visual means of creating imagery in picture books, addressed to a child-reader. The theory of J. Appleyard has been acknowledged. It is believed that in early and later childhood children realize themselves as players, heroes, and heroines of the stories. Given that, visual imagery contributes to their reading experience and creates special world, which attracts child-readers. The theory suggested by G. Kress and T, van Leeuwen, supplemented by C. Painter, J. Martin, and L. Unsworth has been developed and amplified. Social distance, proximity, attitude, and contact in picture books for children are created by means of visual devices, i.e. color and saturation, page layout, close up and long-shot depiction. It is assumed that the most prominent means of creating meanings in picture books for children becomes the focaliser’s viewpoint, as in most narratives for children a child or an anthropomorphic character of a child’s age is a focaliser of the events. It is claimed that close-up depiction of images creates a special eye contact with the reader, as well as color decisions become visual means of creating the point of view of the focaliser. Furthermore, full-length pictures become a visual tool of implementation ironic senses. In ironic narrative for children, the incongruity is shaped via visual depiction of the characters, which builds the contrast between conventional understanding of issues and their representation in narratives for children. Proximity and distance of the images implements social and psychological connection, status or misunderstanding between the characters. Special angle of viewing the images serves as a device of revealing the type of the narrator of the story, as oblique and high angle become a tool of narrating a story by an adult narrator.

When we imagine a picture, we move our eyes even though the picture is physically not present. These eye movements provide information about the ongoing process of mental imagery. Eye movements unfold over time, and previous research has shown that the temporal gaze dynamics of eye movements in mental imagery have unique properties, which are unrelated to those in perception. In mental imagery, refixations of previously fixated locations happen more often and in a more systematic manner than in perception. The origin of these unique properties remains unclear. We tested how the temporal structure of eye movements is influenced by the complexity of the mental image. Participants briefly saw and then maintained a pattern stimulus, consisting of one (easy condition) to four black segments (most difficult condition). When maintaining a simple pattern in imagery, participants restricted their gaze to a narrow area, and for more complex stimuli, eye movements were more spread out to distant areas. At the same time, fewer refixations were made in imagery when the stimuli were complex. The results show that refixations depend on the imagined content. While fixations of stimulus-related areas reflect the so-called 'looking at nothing' effect, gaze restriction emphasizes differences between mental imagery and perception. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The paucity of valid diagnostic tools is one of the challenges preventing the effective implementation of child cognitive health testing in Sub-Saharan developing countries. WAVES addresses the need for new psychometric tests to evaluate visuospatial construction ability in a school-aged population. WAVES involves the standardized administration of a copy design task that is sequentially repeated by four distinct reproduction modalities: copy design with open eyes (CDO), immediate reproduction from memory with open eyes (IRMO), immediate reproduction from memory with closed eyes (IRMC), and delayed reproduction from memory with closed eyes (DRMC). Design: WAVES reliability and validity were assessed in a field trial using Classical Test Theory or Item Response Theory (IRT) methods. A total of 445 children, aged 5 to 17 years old, were recruited at multiple Zambian clinical sites and schools. Results: WAVES provides a visuographomotor construction processing (VGCP) index and three subscale inaccuracy of reproduction scores: perseveration, decreased spacing, and changing direction difficulty (CDD). WAVES scores depended on age and showed an age-related increase of reproduction accuracy. Altered visuospatial construction, as indicated by higher scores, was associated with poor health status (i.e., chronic neurologic or medical disease or prolonged exposure to psychosocial stress and deprivation). Reliability estimates, expressed as an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC; 95% confidence interval [CI]), at test-retest (n=86) were: VGCP Index: 0.94 (0.91, 0.96); perseveration: 0.76 (0.62, 0.84); decreased spacing: 0.86 (0.79, 0.91); and CDD: 0.93 (0.89, 0.95). Conclusion: WAVES has potential for clinical utility in evaluating the effect of different health conditions on visuospatial construction ability. This review article explores how metaphors and analogies used throughout urban history can simulate mental imagery to inspire innovation. The study addresses three critical questions using qualitative literature review methods like text data mining and content analysis. The results yielded from the first question showed a link between mental imagery and architectural discourse. The second question yielded the crucial role of metaphor and analogy as literary devices that can enhance mental imagery. The answer to the third question yielded five procedures of how literary devices foster innovation. The discussion found a complex interplay between recalling mental imagery and imagination and using metaphors and analogies. While recognizing their effectiveness in inspiring innovative ideas, the review cautions against oversimplification and cultural biases. The review of literature offers a nuanced understanding of their theoretical and practical foundations, shedding light on their role in shaping architectural mental imagery within urban history narratives. Reasoning and other mental operations are believed to rely onmental models. Arguments have been made that mental mod-els share representational substrate with perception. Here, wedemonstrate that a neural dynamic architecture that perceptu-ally grounds language may also support the building of men-tal models. Supplied with a sequence of simple premises thatspecify the colors of object pairs as well as their spatial rela-tion, the architecture builds a mental model of the describedscene. We show how the neural processes of the architec-ture evolve in response to both determinate and indeterminatepremises. For indeterminate premises, we demonstrate thatthe preferred mental models observed in human participantsemerge from the underlying neural dynamics.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a diagnosis based on social communication deficits and prevalence of repetitive stereotyped behaviors, but sensorimotor disturbances are commonly exhibited. This longitudinal study aimed at exploring the development of the ability to form mental motor representations (motor imagery; MI) in 14 children with ASD and 17 typically developing (TD) children at 7, 8 and 9 years of age. MI was investigated using a hand laterality paradigm from which response times (RT) and error rates were extracted and compared with performance on a visually based mental rotation task (VI). A criterion task was used to ensure that the children could perform the task. The results showed wide performance variability in the ASD group with more failures than TD in the MI criterion task, especially at 7 years. For all age levels and both the MI and VI tasks, the error rates were significantly higher and RTs longer for the ASD group compared with TD. Signs of MI strategies were however noted in the ASD group as biomechanically constrained orientations had longer RTs than less constrained orientations, a RT pattern that differed from the VI task. The presence of MI in the ASD group was most evident at 9 years, but the error rates remained high at all ages, both in the MI and VI task. In comparison, the TD group showed stable MI strategies at all ages. These findings indicate that MI ability is delayed and/or impaired in children with ASD which may be related to difficulties performing required mental rotations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study systematically reviews the existing research on customer behavior analytics and engagement tools building customer engagement across immersive virtual environments. My findings indicate that decision and behavior visualization can optimize data mining, processing, and modeling, enhancing shopping experiences by capturing consumer data, and I contribute to the literature by indicating that retail brands can deploy analytical artificial intelligence in experiential shopping, thus improving online buying experiences across interactive digital worlds. Throughout April 2022, a quantitative literature review of the Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest databases was performed, with search terms including “metaverse” + “multi-sensor fusion technology,” “visual imagery and predictive modeling tools,” and “big geospatial data analytics.” As research published in 2022 was inspected, only 173 articles satisfied the eligibility criteria. By taking out controversial or ambiguous findings (insufficient/irrelevant data), outcomes unsubstantiated by replication, too general material, or studies with nearly identical titles, I selected 29 mainly empirical sources. Aphantasia is a condition characterized by reduced voluntary mental imagery. As this lack of mental imagery disrupts visual memory, understanding the nature of this condition can provide important insight into memory, perception, and imagery. Here, we leveraged the power of case studies to better characterize this condition by running a pair of identical twins, one with aphantasia and one without, through mental imagery tasks in an fMRI scanner. We identified objective, neural measures of aphantasia, finding less visual information in their memories which may be due to lower connectivity between frontoparietal and occipitotemporal lobes of the brain. However, despite this difference, we surprisingly found more visual information in the aphantasic twin's memory than anticipated, suggesting that aphantasia is a spectrum rather than a discrete condition.

People with aphantasia exhibit the inability to voluntarily generate or form mental imagery in their minds. Since the term "aphantasia" was proposed to describe this, it has gained increasing attention from psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and clinicians. Previous studies have mainly focused on the definition, prevalence, and measurement of aphantasia, its impacts on individuals' cognitive and emotional processing, and theoretical frameworks synthesizing existing findings, which have contributed greatly to our understanding of aphantasia. However, there are still some debates regarding the conclusions derived from existing research and the theories that were constructed from various sources of evidence. Building upon existing endeavors, this systematic review emphasizes that future research is much needed to refine the definition and diagnosis of aphantasia, strengthen empirical investigations at behavioral and neural levels, and, more importantly, develop or update theories. These multiple lines of efforts could lead to a deeper understanding of aphantasia and further guide researchers in future research directions.

According to the Culture Code Theory of Design, posters can be divided into strategy aspect, meaning aspect, and technical aspect. This study explored the impact of visual imagery on poster communication and effect focus on the meaning and technical aspects which directly related to the audiences. The visual imagery preference of ten public poster samples is collected from 40 participants by online questionnaire with the semantic differential method. The results show that the audience's visual imagery at the technical aspect is mainly related to the richness of colors, graphics, and texts. When receiving the information from the meaning aspect of the poster correctly, the visual imagery will be influenced by the type of theme. Most importantly, the same or similar visual imagery at the technical and meaning aspect encourages audiences to explore the deep information of posters. Background/Objectives: Visual demonstration by occupational therapists is very common in psychiatric treatment, however, some patients with schizophrenia could not imitate the actions despite the absence of any physical impairments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify how cognitive functions such as attention and cognitive processes in the imitation process is necessary and how these processes were related to the ability to convert this into action (imitation) in patients with schizophrenia. Method: The participants were patients with schizophrenia with mean age 59.2 (± 11.3) years, 23 were men and 10 were women. The participants were tested for imitation ability and cognitive function, working memory, and motor imagery. Results: Three subjects achieved full scores in the visual imitation test. However, the median of the total score was 10.0, with many subjects failing to imitate multiple tasks. Imitation learning is associated with duration of illness (t = -4.09, p = .000), mental health (t = -2.30, p = .029), and cognitive function such as the ability to retain visual information (t = -2.97, p = .006), and that these factors are interrelated. Conclusion: To effectively promote imitation learning in patients with schizophrenia, occupational therapists need to establish teaching methods that make it easier for learners to retain visual information from the early stages of their illness. A classic discussion about visual imagery is whether it affordsreinterpretation, like discovering two interpretations in theduck/rabbit illustration. Recent findings converge onreinterpretation being possible in visual imagery, suggestingfunctional equivalence with pictorial representations.However, it is unclear whether such reinterpretations arenecessarily a visual-pictorial achievement. To assess this, 68participants were briefly presented 2-d ambiguous figures.One figure was presented visually, the other via manual touchalone. Afterwards participants mentally rotated thememorized figures as to discover a novel interpretation. Aportion (20.6%) of the participants detected a novelinterpretation in visual imagery, replicating previous research.Strikingly, 23.6% of participants were able to reinterpretfigures they had only felt. That reinterpretation truly involvedhaptic processes was further supported, as some participantsperformed co-thought gestures on an imagined figure duringretrieval. These results are promising for further developmentof an Enactivist approach to imagination.

Growing evidence suggests that humans and other animals assign value to a stimulus based not only on its inherent rewarding properties, but also on the costs of the action required to obtain it, such as the cost of time. Here, we examined whether such cost also occurs for mentally simulated actions. Healthy volunteers indicated their subjective value for snack foods while the time to imagine performing the action to obtain the different stimuli was manipulated. In each trial, the picture of one food item and a home position connected through a path were displayed on a computer screen. The path could be either large or thin. Participants first rated the stimulus, and then imagined moving the mouse cursor along the path from the starting position to the food location. They reported the onset and offset of the imagined movements with a button press. Two main results emerged. First, imagery times were significantly longer for the thin than the large path. Second, participants liked significantly less the snack foods associated with the thin path (i.e., with longer imagery time), possibly because the passage of time strictly associated with action imagery discounts the value of the reward. Importantly, such effects were absent in a control group of participants who performed an identical valuation task, except that no action imagery was required. Our findings hint at the idea that imagined actions, like real actions, carry a cost that affects deeply how people assign value to the stimuli in their environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With this review, we summarize the state-of-the-art of scientific studies in the field of motor imagery (MI) and motor execution (ME). We composed the brain map and description that correlate different brain areas with the type of movements it is responsible for. That gives a more complete and systematic picture of human brain functionality in the case of ME and MI. We systematized the most popular methods for assessing the quality of MI performance and discussed their advantages and disadvantages. We also reviewed the main directions for the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in MI research and considered the principal effects of TMS on MI performance. In addition, we discuss the main applications of MI, emphasizing its use in the diagnostics of various neurodegenerative disorders and psychoses. The pupillary light response is an important automatic physiological response which optimizes light reaching the retina. Recent work has shown that the pupil also adjusts in response to illusory brightness and a range of cognitive functions, however, it remains unclear what exactly drives these endogenous changes. Here, we show that the imagery pupillary light response correlates with objective measures of sensory imagery strength. Further, the trial-by-trial phenomenological vividness of visual imagery is tracked by the imagery pupillary light response. We also demonstrated that a group of individuals without visual imagery (aphantasia) do not show any significant evidence of an imagery pupillary light response, however they do show perceptual pupil light responses and pupil dilation with larger cognitive load. Our results provide evidence that the pupillary light response indexes the sensory strength of visual imagery. This work also provides the first physiological validation of aphantasia.

Abstract: Research findings on gender differences in visual imagery are mixed. One reason suggested to account for the inconsistent results has been the treatment of imagery as a unified construct despite the recent arguments of its multifaceted quality. In order to explore how visual imagery is related to gender, the present study differentiates between two different visual imagery construct; object and spatial imagery. In addition, it explores two other factors in characterizing gender differences: the type of the visual imagery measure (i.e., performance type vs. self-report measures) and academic training. One hundred and twenty undergraduates completed the Vividness of Visual Imagery (VVIQ), Mental Rotation Test (MRT) and Object-Spatial Imagery and Verbal Questionnaire (OSIVQ). Gender differences were observed in: (1) favoring females in the vividness measure as well as the object imagery questionnaire; (2) favoring males in the mental rotation performance and spatial imagery questionnaire. Academic training did not contribute as a factor. These results suggest that object and spatial imagery are differentially related to gender, and the type of the visual imagery measure does not seem to contribute to the story. Ölçüm aracı tipinin ya da akademik eğitimin etkisi gözlenmemiştir. Buna göre, görsel imgeleme çeşitlerinin toplumsal cinsiyet ile ilişkisinde farklı örüntüler izlediği alan yazındaki bulgular ile karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirilmiştir.

This paper investigates the possibility of using visual imagery tasks, which are mental imagery tasks that involve imagining the images of objects perceptually without seeing them, as a control paradigm that can increase the control's dimensionality of electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces. Specifically, we propose an EEG-based approach for decoding visually imagined objects by using the Choi-Williams time-frequency distribution to analyze the EEG signals in the joint time-frequency domain and extract a set of twelve time-frequency features (TFFs). The extracted TFFs are used to construct a multi-class support vector machine classifier to decode various visually imagined objects. To validate the performance of our proposed approach, we have recorded an EEG dataset for 16 healthy subjects while imagining objects that belong to four different categories, namely nature (fruits and animals), decimal digits, English alphabet (capital letters), and arrow shapes (arrows with different colors and orientations). Moreover, we have designed two performance evaluation analyses, namely the channel-based analysis and feature-based analysis, to quantify the impact of utilizing different groups of EEG electrodes that cover various regions on the scalp and the effect of reducing the dimensionality of the extracted TFFs on the performance of our proposed approach in decoding the imagined objects within each of the four categories. The experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed approach in decoding visually imagined objects. Particularly, the average decoding accuracies obtained for each of the four categories were as high as 96.67%, 93.64%, 88.95%, and 92.68%.

Brain-Computer interface systems allow the recognition of neuronal activity to create a direct communication channel between the brain and the outside world without using the peripheral nervous system. Many of the paradigms used are based on the detection of motor imagery and evoked potentials. In this work we study the use of visual imagery of geometric shapes to build a non-invasive BCI using convolutional neural networks and the black hole search algorithm. Our algorithm computes, for seven people, an average of 35% correctly when classifying 7 geometric shapes, and 70% when classifying the best two ones (line and parallelogram). The same technique has been tested on a set of data collected on eleven subjects when classifying 2 geometric shapes, and a maximum accuracy of 82% was obtained.

Artificial neural networks are efficient learning algorithms that are considered to be universal approximators for solving numerous real-world problems in areas such as computer vision, language processing, or reinforcement learning. To approximate any given function, neural networks train a large number of parameters—up to millions, or even billions in some cases. The large number of parameters and hidden layers in neural networks make them hard to interpret, which is why they are often referred to as black boxes. In the quest to make artificial neural networks interpretable in the field of computer vision, feature visualization stands out as one of the most developed and promising research directions. While feature visualizations are a valuable tool to gain insights about the underlying function learned by the network, they are still considered to be simple visual aids requiring human interpretation. In this paper, we propose that feature visualizations—class visualizations in particular—are analogous to mental imagery in humans, resembling the experience of seeing or perceiving the actual training data. Therefore, we propose that class visualizations contain embedded knowledge that can be exploited in a more automated manner. We present a series of experiments that shed light on the nature of class visualizations and demonstrate that class visualizations can be considered a conceptual compression of the data used to train the underlying model. Finally, we show that class visualizations can be regarded as convolutional filters and experimentally show their potential for extreme model compression purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
