This is the proceedings of the seventh annual Museums and the Web conference which took place March 19-22, 2003. MW2003 was the premier international venue to review the state of the Web in arts, culture, and heritage. The formal program consisted of two plenary sessions, eighteen parallel sessions, 35 museum project demonstrations, dozens of commercial exhibits, full-day and half-day pre-conference workshops, and one-hour mini-workshops combined with a day-long usability lab, a day-long design "crit room", and the Best of the Web awards. In this selection of papers from the conference, authors from 10 of the more than 35 countries and every continent (except Antarctica) provide discussions covering all levels of museum Web design. They brought a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds to the conference, all of which ensured new perspectives and new ideas. The meetings opened on Thursday with a plenary address, followed by a full day of sessions and two Crit Rooms. Friday featured sessions on accessibility, portals, and data interchange. This day also featured a variety of Mini-Workshops. The final day began with two groups of demonstrations that were followed by sessions on design, licensing, schools, and new technology. MW2001 ended with a closing plenary. This Proceedings document begins with the text of the keynote by Dr. Michelle Caswell, followed by seven papers, representing a sampling of the symposium presentations from the 2022 Digitizing Hidden Collections (DHC) Symposium, a capstone event for the Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives program. This program was funded by the Mellon Foundation and issued calls for new applicants between 2015 and 2020. The two-day symposium brought together over 135 participants, with presenters from 23 grant-funded projects, both past and current. Their contributions addressed the symposium's theme: "We digitized it--what's next? Learning from and making use of digitized hidden collections." An appendix lists all Symposium content and those who presented and contributed.

The interest in graphic information has increased explosively and is explored through various communication networks like the Internet and the audiovisual media. Art libraries, museums, cultural centers, and art foundations manage and store a lot of images in several departments and in print and digital formats. This paper discusses the cataloging of graphic information in Spanish institutions in order to serve users' needs and conserve the original graphic material. The paper shows how the different formats for description and indexing can be compatible to make access to graphic information easier and to establish the links to digital graphic supports. Topics addressed include: (1) collections of graphic material in Spanish museums and archives; (2) access to the graphic information in the libraries, files, and specialized centers in Spain; (3) classification and indexing; and (4) digitization, including criteria for establishing a program for digitization. This paper supplements a previous paper that reported on a tour of leading U.S. research libraries that are investing significantly in and have significant experience with innovative online collections and services. The previous paper reported the following five key challenges: architectural and technical; standards and best practices; strategies for developing sustainable and scaleable digital collections; getting good information about users' information seeking behaviors and needs; and securing long-term access to digital information. The current paper supplements that report with observations about challenges confronting cultural heritage organizations, i.e., libraries, museums, and archives. These challenges are discussed under the following headings: (1) strategic planning, including business planning frameworks, benchmarks of institutional readiness, risk assessment tools, and cost-benefit evaluation of different organizational forms; (2) provision of key infrastructure, including digitization services, distribution services, and alerting services and open software libraries; (3) provision of professional development opportunities, including thinking in new ways about recruitment and professional qualification, ensuring staff are afforded appropriate training opportunities, and providing guidance in change management; and (4) re-assessment and review of the cultural heritage library's mission and values, including balancing not-for-profit service goals, transcending the current role, and determining whether there is room in a networked space for the cultural heritage sector as a whole. This paper documents and explores the methodology employed by the developers of the Euro.Network.Hats project--a CD-ROM and Web site exploring the hatting and millinery industry in Europe, particularly the development and decline of European felt hat manufacture. The Stockport Hat Museum approached the International Center for Digital Content (ICDC) with certain key prerequisites. The CD-ROM was to explore the hatting and millinery industry in Europe using content supplied by the European partners. The content had to be equally accessible in four languages (English, French, Dutch, and German) and to three distinct user groups (researchers, school child, and casual browser). An insight is provided into an approach to the translation of diverse archive materials into an interactive digital format. The paper illustrates the process of content development: from the elicitation of content knowledge to the developer's response in terms of information design, visual, and interaction design. This paper reports on a cooperative effort to create a series of web-based multimedia exhibits uniting oral history with historical images to portray the complex history of the Colorado Plateau region. Lead by a university library, regional libraries and museums worked in collaboration to integrate historical and cultural materials from each of the partnering institutions to tell the engaging story of this unique part of America. Voices of the Colorado Plateau features online multimedia exhibits where real people tell real stories. The menus are simple and users can experience the museum with a minimum of searching and clicking. The site takes advantage of both World Wide Web multimedia and streaming technologies offering online patrons compelling and educational presentations. If more information is desired, there are simple routes to gain access to full interviews, complete photo collections or access to the host museum/library web site. This is one of a new generation of online cultural heritage sites endeavoring to make library and museum artifacts more accessible, more compelling and more human. (Contains eight references.) Museums hold enormous amounts of information in collections management systems and publish academic and scholarly research in print journals, exhibition catalogs, virtual museum presentations, and community publications. Much of this rich content is unavailable to web search engines or otherwise gets lost in the vastness of the World Wide Web. The Open Archives Initiative (OAI) has developed an easily implemented protocol to enable data providers to expose their information and service providers to access and use it. The CIMI Consortium is working with the OAI to make it possible for museums to enhance the availability of their research resources, allowing them to be discovered in Web-space by the specialist audiences for which they are intended or by service providers who collect, distribute or in other ways provide access. By building on the OAI protocol, Dublin Core, and museum community XML developments, significant advancements can be made in exposing museum information resources. This paper introduces the OAI and its protocol, explores its potential relevance to museums, presents CIMI's work as an alpha tester of OAI, and looks ahead to future developments. This paper describes the experiences of the Colorado Digitization Project (CDP) related to accessing a diverse set of primary resources held by many different cultural heritage institutions. The CDP is a collaborative initiative involving Colorado's archives, historical societies, libraries, and museums. The CDP's goal is to create a virtual digital collection of resources that provide the people of Colorado access to the rich historical, scientific, and cultural resources of the state. Issues that arise from different cataloging and metadata standards and diverse user populations and needs are addressed. Topics covered include: (1) a description of the project, including activities, funding, and goals; (2) the environment for standards application in a cross-cultural heritage institution group; (3) the CDP and standards; (4) the CDP metadata core elements; (5) issues with Dublin Core; (6) cataloging the original versus the digital object; (7) subject terminology; and (8) what needs to be addressed in the shared cultural heritage environment, including shared development, standards, interoperability, resource discovery services, cataloging issues, and authority control. This paper discusses interoperability between libraries, archives, and museums, focusing on how the user can have simultaneous access to all kinds of material based on a core level of description. Tools for description and conceptual data modeling are addressed, including ISAD(G) (General International Standard Archival Description), ISBD(G) (International Standard Bibliographic Description), and FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records). The conceptual models described in the FRBR and ISAD(G) are outlined. These include three groups of entities: (1) works (intellectual/artistic creation), expressions (realization of the work), manifestations (physical embodiments), and items (single exemplars of a manifestation); (2) persons and corporate bodies responsible for the intellectual creation or physical production, dissemination, or ownership of the entity being described; and (3) concepts, events, and places as the subjects of the work. Levels and relationships within the descriptive elements are summarized, and several elements in the ISAD(G) and ISBD(G) (i.e., reference codes, title, date(s), level of description, extent and medium of the unit of description, and name of creator(s)) are compared. Cataloging as a dynamic process and collection level cataloging are considered. Cooperation among IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) and ICA (Interaction Council on Archives) regarding authority information is also described. The Partnership for Research in Spatial Modeling (PRISM) project at Arizona State University (ASU) developed modeling and analytic tools to respond to the limitations of two-dimensional (2D) data representations perceived by affiliated discipline scientists, and to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities of three-dimensional (3D) data that raise the level of abstraction and add semantic value to 3D data. 3D data is complex, and application of modeling and analytic techniques significantly enhances the capacity for researchers to extract meaning from 3D information. The tool prototypes simplify analysis of surface and volume using curvature and topology to help researchers understand and interact with 3D data. The tools automatically extract information about features and regions of interest to researchers, calculate quantifiable, replicable metric data, and generate metadata about the object being studied. To make this information useful to researchers, the project developed prototype interactive, sketch-based interfaces that permit researchers to remotely search, identify and interact with the detailed, highly accurate 3D models of the objects. The results support comparative analysis of contextual and spatial information, and extend research about asymmetric man-made and natural objects that can significantly extend the interactive capabilities of museums for exhibitions, education, and outreach. Archival research gives students opportunities to appreciate original documents and artifacts, teaching them how to access materials, to treat them with care, and to invest them with meaning, and demonstrating the partnership researchers develop with librarians. Three suggested writing assignments introduce students to special collections, offering concepts and ways of working that characterize research in several disciplines. The assignments are: (1) document editing; (2) describing, preparing an annotated bibliography, and doing background research for an archival museum object; and (3) research and reconstruction of historical events utilizing primarily newspaper archives and microfilm. ABSTRACT This paper explores the Designated Community term within the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model. Information practitioners, particularly those who work with varied populations and popular materials such as public- or state-sponsored libraries and museums, complain that this term is counter to their professional, ethical, and legal mandates to serve many types of user. Using interview data from digital preservation practitioners and scholars as well as interview data from OAIS authors, the author examines the meaning and history behind this term and what it prescribes for professional digital preservation practice. This work juxtaposes contentions of digital preservation practitioners with explanations provided by the authors of OAIS about the Designated Community term. The findings in this paper support the author's contention that alternative digital preservation models and metrics are necessary within cultural heritage institutions, like libraries and museums, to meet the professional standards of practice in those areas and to ensure the inclusion of broad populations within the user bases of digital repositories.
