Abstract

Background Considering the importance of health literacy (HL) for the maximum yield from the hypertension control programs, development of a reliable and valid instrument of hypertension-related HL is critical. This study aimed to translate and validate the High Blood Pressure-Health Literacy Scale (HBP-HLS) into Chinese (C-HBP-HLS) and evaluate its psychometric properties in Chinese context. Method Between June 2013 and January 2014, a cross-sectional study was conducted among recruited hypertensive patients belonging to the Han and Kazakh-Chinese communities in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China. Results A pilot sample (n = 242) was selected for the exploratory factor analysis of the translated and modified instrument. Another sample (n = 308) was recruited for the confirmatory factor analysis. C-HBP-HLS consisted of five dimensions (Print Health Literacy, Medication Label, Understanding Ability, Newest Vital Sign Test, and Avoiding Food Allergy) containing 15 items, accounting for 77.7% of the total variance. The 5-factor model demonstrated a good overall fit. The scale-level content validity index was 0.85. Cronbach’s alpha of the overall scale was 0.78 and test-retest reliability was 0.96. Education level had a strong positive correlation with the scores for items Q1, Q2, and Q3(r = 0.481, 0.492, 0.475, respectively). Abstract

Background Depression is a major mental health issue worldwide, and university students with heavy burdens of study are at a high risk for depression. While a number of studies have been conducted regarding depression among university students in China, there is a lack of information regarding the national prevalence of depression among Chinese university students. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to statistically pool the prevalence of depression among Chinese university students. Methods A systematic search of scientific databases was conducted, including Chinese Web of Knowledge, Embase, PubMed, Wanfang (a Chinese database) and Weipu (a Chinese database) to find relevant publications published between 1995 and December 2015. This was supplemented by a secondary review of the reference lists of all retrieved papers to find additional relevant citations. Studies published in either English or Chinese that provided prevalence estimates of depression in Chinese university students were considered. Prevalence estimates of each eligible study were extracted and pooled in our meta-analysis using a random-effects model. Results A total of 39 studies conducted between 1997 and 2015 including 32,694 university students were analyzed. Our results indicate that the overall prevalence of depression among Chinese university students is 23.8% (95% CI: 19.9%–28.5%). Substantial heterogeneity in prevalence estimates was noted. Subgroup analysis revealed that the prevalence of depression among medical students is higher than among other students. Conclusions Overall, the prevalence of depression among Chinese university students is exceedingly high. This suggests that it is imperative that more attention be given to the development of appropriate mental healthcare strategies for university students in China.

3. Association between polymorphisms of heat-shock protein 70 genes and noise-induced hearing loss: A meta-analysis.

Abstract

Background: Recent studies have evaluated the associations between polymorphisms of the heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70) encoding genes and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). However, the conclusions of these studies are conflicting. The objective of this meta-analysis was to clarify the association between all known polymorphisms of HSP70 genetic loci and susceptibility to NIHL, based on existing reports. Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis of the association between Hsp70 polymorphisms (rs1043618, rs1061581, rs2075800, rs2227956, and rs2763979) and NIHL risk in both Chinese and Caucasian males. All statistical analysis was done with was conducted using the “meta” package (version 4.6–0) of R version 3.3.2 and RStudio version 1.0.44. Online databases were searched for eligible case-control studies on February 13, 2017. The odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (CI), and P value were calculated using Mantel-Haenszel statistics under a random- or fixed-effect model. Results: A total of five studies, reported via four articles from online databases, were included in our meta-analysis. For rs1061581 (from three studies), a significant association was detected in the allele model, homozygote model, and dominant model (G versus A: OR (95% CI) = 1.32(1.05–1.67), GG versus AA: OR (95% CI) = 1.93(1.1–3.36), GG + AG versus AA: OR (95% CI) = 1.45(1.05–2.02)), but not in the heterozygote model or the recessive model. For rs1043618 (from five studies), rs2075800 (from two studies), rs2227956 (from four studies), rs2763979 (from two studies), no significant association was found for any genetic model. After subgroup analyses by ethnicity, significant associations were observed for the allele model, heterozygote model, and dominant model for rs1061581 and any genetic model for rs2227956 in Caucasians. Conclusions: The rs1043618, rs2075800, and rs2763979 polymorphisms were not found to be associated with susceptibility to NIHL; however, the rs1061581 and rs2227956 polymorphisms were significantly associated with NIHL in Caucasian males. Abstract

Background and objective: Several studies have been conducted to examine the association between aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 family (ALDH2) rs671 polymorphism and essential hypertension (EH). However, the results remain inconsistent. This study aimed to clarify the association between ALDH2 rs671 polymorphism and EH susceptibility. Methods: One thousand and ninety-four cases and 1236 controls who were ethnic Han Chinese were collected for this population-based case-control study. A meta-analysis was performed to calculate the pooled odds ratio and 95% confidence interval, using allele contrast, dominant, recessive, and co-dominant models using fixed or random-effect models. Results: Significant differences were observed between EH cases and controls at the level of both genotype (χ2 = 6.656, P<0.05) and alleles (χ2 = 6.314, P<0.05). An additional meta-analysis using 4204 cases and 5435 controls established that rs671 was significantly associated with EH (P<0.00001). Conclusion: The results of our case-control study and meta-analysis showed that there is a significant association between ALDH2 rs671 polymorphism and EH susceptibility. In addition, the results of the breakdown analysis by gender suggest a male-specific association between the ALDH2 rs671 polymorphism and EH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
