In the last several decades, extended dry periods have affected the Mediterranean area with dramatic impacts on water resources. Climate models are predicting further warming, with negative effects on water availability. The authors analyze the hydroclimatic tendencies of a typical Mediterranean basin, the Flumendosa basin located in Sardinia, an island in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, where in the last 30 years a sequence of dry periods has seriously impacted the water management system. Interestingly, in the historic record the annual runoff reductions have been more pronounced than the annual precipitation reductions. This paper performs an analysis that links this runoff decrease to changes in the total annual precipitation and its seasonal structure. The seasonality is a key determinant of the surface runoff process, as it reflects the degree to which rainfall is concentrated during the winter. The observed reductions in winter precipitation are shown here to be well correlated (Pearson correlation coefficient of 20.5) with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index. Considering the predictability of the winter NAO, there is by extension an opportunity to predict future winter precipitation and runoff tendencies. The recent hydroclimatic trends are shown to impact hydrologic design criteria for water resources planning. This paper analyzes long-term trends and sudden changes in hydro-climatic variables (i.e., runoff) in Iran's Aidoghmoush basin during 1971-2000 using the nonparametric Mann-Kendall test and curves of cumulative runoff versus rainfall and cumulative runoff versus temperature The use of the Mann-Kendall test with a 99% confidence level revealed a decreasing trend in annual rainfall and total runoff and an increasing trend in temperature. A sudden change in the gradient of the cumulative curves in 1988 indicated that the relation between climatic variables and runoff is influenced by human activities (agricultural water use). The interval 1971-2000 was separated into a baseline interval (1971-1988) and an impact interval (1989-2000), during which human activities affected runoff. The five-parameter hydrologic model of IHACRES (Identification of unit Hydrographs and Component flows from Rainfall, Evaporation, and Streamflow data) was calibrated and verified over the baseline interval to determine the contribution of human activities and climatic variability to the change in runoff. Runoff was simulated with the hydrologic model for the interval 1989-2000, during which human activities reduced runoff. Results show that climate variability and human activities decreased the runoff in the Aidoghmoush river basin by 79 and 21%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global warming will have direct impacts on regional water resources by accelerating the hydrological cycle. Hydrological simulation is an important approach to studying climate change impacts. In this paper, a snowmelt-based water balance model (SWBM) was used to simulate the effect of climate change on runoff in the Kuye River catchment of the Loess Plateau, China. Results indicated that the SWBM is suitable for simulating monthly discharge into arid catchments. The response of runoff in the Kuye River catchment to climate change is nonlinear, and runoff is more sensitive to changes in precipitation than to changes in temperature. The projections indicated that the Kuye River catchment would undergo more flooding in the 2020s, and global warming would probably shorten the main flood season in the catchment, with greater discharge occurring in August. Although projected changes in annual runoff are uncertain, the possibilities of regional water shortages and regional flooding are essential issues that need to be fully considered. This paper addresses the impact of climate change on the volume of inflow to a reservoir and the volume of downstream water demand by considering three climate change scenarios in an East Azerbaijan river basin. The HadCM3 model was used to estimate possible scenarios of temperature and rainfall for the period 2026-2039 under an emission scenario (A2). A hydrological model (IHACRES) was first calibrated for the basin; and then, a monthly time series of future temperatures and rainfall were entered into IHACRES. In addition, a 14-year time series of monthly runoff was simulated for 2026-2039. Modeling results indicated that the average long-term annual runoff volume decreased by 0.7% relative to the base period (1987-2000). However, by assuming a nonchanging cultivation area, the average long-term annual water demand volume for crops increased by 16%. Both simulation and optimization models of reservoir operation were used. The simulation of reservoir performance in the delivery of water demand was implemented according to the standard operating policy (SOP) and by using the water evaluation and planning (WEAP) model. The three aforementioned climate change scenarios were then introduced to the WEAP, and the reservoir performance indexes (reliability, vulnerability, and resiliency) were calculated. Results showed that indexes would change in the future relative to the base. Next, for the optimal operation of the reservoir with a water supply for agricultural and environmental purposes, the minimization of total squared deficiencies in the allocation to these purposes was determined for each month and climate change scenario by the using LINGO Version 11.0 software [nonlinear programming (NLP)] algorithm. Variability and availability of water resources under changing environment in a regional scale have been hot topics in recent years, due to the vulnerability of water resources associated with social and economic development. In this paper, four subbasins in the Dongjiang basin with a significant land use change were selected as case study. Runoffs of the four subbasins were simulated using the SCS monthly model to identify the quantitative impacts of land use and climate change. The results showed that (1), in the Dongjiang basin, temperature increased significantly, evaporation and sunlight decreased strongly, while precipitation showed a nonsignificant increase; (2) since the 1980s, land uses in the Dongjiang basin have experienced a significant change with a prominent increase inurbanareas, amoderate increase in farmlands, anda greatdecrease inforest areas; (3) the SCSmonthlymodel performed well in the four subbasins giving that the more significant land use change in each subbasin, the more runoff change correspondingly; (4) overall, runoff change was contributed half and half by climate change and human activities, respectively, in all the subbasins, in which about 20%~30% change was contributed by land use change. Among the processes most affected by global warming are the hydrological cycle and water resources. Regions where the majority of runoff consists of snowmelt are very sensitive to climate change. It is significant to express the relationship between climate change and snow hydrology and it is imperative to perform climate change impact studies on snow hydrology at global and regional scales. Climate change impacts on the mountainous Upper Euphrates Basin were investigated in this paper. First, historical data trend analysis of significant hydro-meteorological data is presented. Available future climate data are then explained, and, finally, future climate data are used in hydrological models, which are calibrated and validated using historical hydro-meteorological data, and future streamflow is projected for the period 2070–2100. Statistical tests have been widely used for several decades to identify and test the significance of trends in runoff and other hydrological data. The Mann-Kendall (M-K) trend test is commonly used in trend analysis. The M-K test was originally proposed for random data. Several variations of the M-K test, as well as pre-processing of data for use with it, have been developed and used. The M-K test under the scaling hypothesis has been developed recently. The basic objective of the research presented in this paper is to investigate the trends in Malaysian monthly runoff data. Identification of trends in runoff data is useful for planning water resources projects. Existence of statistically significant trends would also lead to identification of possible effects of climate change. Monthly runoff data for Malaysian rivers from the past three decades are analysed, in both five-year segments and entire data sequences. The five-year segments are analysed to investigate the variability in trends from one segment to another in three steps: (1) the M-K tests are conducted under random and correlation assumptions; (2) the Hurst scaling parameter is estimated and tested for significance; and (3) the M-K test under the scaling hypothesis is conducted. Thus the tests cover both correlation and scaling. The results show that the number of significant segments in Malaysian runoff data would be the same as those found under the assumption that the river flow sequences are random. The results are also the same for entire sequences. Thus, monthly Malaysian runoff data do not have statistically significant trends. • The rainfall-runoff relationship has changed under climate change and human activities in the TRH region. • The impacts climate indicators of rainfall-runoff ratio in the sub-basins of TRH region were different. • The contribution rates of human activity in the YRB were a little higher than that in the YARB. Identifying the impact of climate change and human activities on rainfall-runoff relationship in the Three-River Headwaters (TRH) region is essential for water source conservation, ecological security, and biodiversity maintenance of China and East Asia. In this paper, the runoff-rainfall ratio was used as the index of rainfall-runoff relationship. Different methods were employed to identify the impact indicators and quantitative assessment of rainfall-runoff relationship from 1957 to 2016. The results are the following: (1) the rainfall-runoff relationship has changed in the source regions of Yangtze River basin (YARB) and Yellow River (YRB), and runoff-rainfall ratio has increased by 2.9% and decreased by 3.2%, respectively; (2) the main climate indicators of runoff-rainfall ratio were rainfall, potential evaporation and sunshine hours in the YARB, and rainfall, potential evaporation and temperature in the YRB; (3) the contribution rates of human activity in the YRB were a little higher than that in the YARB, and the contribution rates of climate change and human activity were 90.9% and 9.1% in the YARB and 42.9% and 57.1% in the YRB. As a typical alpine marsh wetland on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Zoige Wetland plays an important role in the water source recharge of Yellow River. Meanwhile, it is more sensitive to climate change. Therefore, it is necessary to study the hydrological cycle of Zoige Wetland and the impact of climate change, which will also provide important support and reference for the study of hydrological process, and protection of wetland water resources in Alpine areas. Based on the distributed hydrological model, this paper analyzed the runoff process in the Zoige wetland basin, and explored the trend of runoff variation in the Zoige wetland basin under different climate change scenarios in the next 30 years from 2020 to 2050. The impact of climate change on wetland runoff were also discussed. Results showed that the runoff in the Zoige Wetland basin decreased under the future climate change scenario. The rate of runoff reduction was the largest in Machu station, followed by Zoige station, and finally Tangke station. The reduction in non-flooding runoff is significantly higher than that in the flood season. The runoff during non-flood season in the Zoige Wetland basin from 2020 to 2050 will decrease by more than 25% in the future climate change scenario. The sharp decline in non-flooded runoff may have an impact on the protection of the Zoige Wetland and the management of water resources in the middle reaches of the Yellow River and downstream areas. This poses more stringent requirements for the protection of the Zoige Wetland in response to future climate change. Under future climate change scenarios, how to strengthen the management and protection of wetland water resources and prevent the degradation and atrophy of wetlands is the issue we need to further discuss and consider.
