Background: Qualitative research methods (QRMs) bear a critical role in psychiatry as they explore the phenomenology of psychiatric illness and its sociocultural dimensions. However, there is limited evidence regarding its use in psychiatric research in India. Aim: This study, under the aegis of mapping qualitative health research in India initiative, attempted to landscape the use of QRMs in psychiatry and elicited expert opinion on its potential, perceived quality, and scope for improvement. Materials and Methods: We reviewed studies using qualitative methodology published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry (IJP) and the abstracts presented at the Annual Conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society (ANCIPS) between 2010 and 2019. Titles and abstracts were screened and shortlisted; full-text articles were checked to identify the relevant ones. In addition, ten experts comprising psychiatry journal reviewers, editors, and conference scientific committee members were interviewed to elicit their views and suggestions. Results: Out of 356 papers published in IJP between 2010 and 2019, only 12 papers used QRMs: five qualitative and seven mixed methods. Out of 2297 abstracts published between 2010 and 2019 in ANCIPS, only 28 had used QRMs, consisting of 20 qualitative and eight mixed methods. The findings reveal that qualitative research is still an understudied domain in Indian psychiatry with a substantial need for rigor and quality. Conclusions: To catalyze the use of qualitative research in Indian psychiatry, continuing medical education programs through workshops or webinar mode need to be imparted. Background Currently, 1 in 10 people diagnosed with dementia in Ireland are aged under 65, this is termed "Younger Onset Dementia" (YOD). Though small in numbers these figures (4000 people) are increasing, and important differences exist between people diagnosed with (PwYOD) and those diagnosed with later onset dementia (LOD). As dementia is normally associated with advancing age, clinicians are not always on the alert for its diagnosis in younger people. Diagnosing YOD can be especially challenging since presentation may be atypical and there is a lack of clinical ownership in this area. Methods A structured literature review was conducted to identify optimum models of diagnostic processes and pathways for PwYOD. Two research questions were addressed: (i) what models for the diagnosis of PwYOD exist nationally and internationally, and what evidence supports these and (ii) what are the differences between diagnostic processes and pathways for PwYOD compared with PwLOD. A systematic search strategy was devised to identify all relevant scientific papers. Key databases were used, supplemented by grey literature searches. A narrative synthesis approach was undertaken to assess the literature identified. Results Pathways and processes to the diagnosis of YOD are unclear and complex and compared with LOD, diagnosis takes more time. PwYOD are more likely to have multiple referrals to different specialists, have their memory and cognitive complaints misattributed to other factors such as depression and experience longer delays in obtaining a diagnosis. Conclusion Few evidence-based best-practice models or guidelines for the diagnosis of YOD exist internationally. Increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of YOD among all healthcare professionals is necessary. There is a need for improved linkages to be developed between Geriatric Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Primary Care services and in certain instances for suspected cases of YOD to be referred to neurology-led memory clinics. Psychiatry trainees in Iraq face many challenges that limit their immediate access to training opportunities. These include limited opportunities to attend international conferences due to visa restrictions, reduced access to evidence-based practice and guidelines and less experience in conducting quality improvement projects and audits. There are also issues related to their training programmes, including lack of regular meetings with supervisors and fewer opportunities for case-based discussions. Clinical Psychiatry is thus a potential key affected clinical domain due to the above factors. Technological advances in the field of e-learning created concepts such as Technology-enhanced or Web-based learning (TEL or WBL). These developments enabled the formation of "virtual teams" using an online platform. These teams overcome logistical geographical and other barriers to enable professionals to connect and learn from each other. This paper includes an appraisal of the TEL, looking at its advantages and challenges in meeting the needs of learners and educators. Also, we describe how we incorporated evidence-based and good practice guidelines on TEL use in these circumstances to the design, delivery and early evaluation of the distance learning programme. In our conclusion, we add to these and draw attention to the use of established online platforms (Medicine Africa in this case) and the importance of involving Iraqi Training leads, trainees and institutions in identifying trainee learning needs and supporting existing training provisions. Background: Despite the progress in treatment and clinical outcomes, schizophrenia remains a highly stigmatized disease and imposes a challenge to families and patients towards recovery. Stigma can debilitate individuals as much as the disease itself, representing one of the most relevant obstacles to overcome the illness: it hinders the pursuit of autonomy and achievement of life goals. Stigma is complex and multilayered and its research usually focus on patients and society, but a lower number of studies address health professionals stigma. Even fewer investigate stigma of researchers. Thus, our objective is to analyze how the most cited research papers published in 2018 addressing schizophrenia depict the disease to identify putative stigma among researchers. Methods: In this exploratory study, we conducted a search using Web of Science (WoS) with the following terms: (“patients with schizophrenia”) OR (“schizophrenia patients”). We restricted the search to articles published in 2018 and selected the 20 studies with the highest total number of citations. We identified how the authors defined schizophrenia and then categorized the definition in three groups: (1) negative perspective, in which depreciative words were used to define the disease; (2) neutral definition, in which emphasis is given to the description of epidemiological data; and (3) neutral to positive definition, when negative outcomes were listed as possibilities, not certainties. Two independent authors (G.K. and M.M.) categorized each article and eventual conflicts were solved by a third author (A.G.) Results: 25% of the studies depicted a clearly negative perspective of schizophrenia. In these studies, the disease was described with words such as “devastating” and “highly disabling”. Most studies (60%) were coded as neutral, being mainly descriptive of current epidemiological data. Only 3 studies (15%) were identified as more favorable, since they acknowledged the possibility of better outcomes among patients with schizophrenia. Discussion: In the current schizophrenia scientific literature, negative views of the disease are still largely common. Considering the role of highly cited papers as opinion formers, we suggest that as occurred in other fields, such as the change in address of suicide by the media, some orientation should be adopted to avoid further contributions to the schizophrenia stigma. The social model of disability--which is grounded in the lived realities of disabled people, as well as their activism, research, and theoretical work--has enabled a historic turn in the understanding of disability. This model also facilitates the transition to the rights-based approach that is at the core of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). However, the social model of disability does not straightforwardly translate to the lives of people who end up being detained and forcibly treated in psychiatric facilities. This paper examines the implications of the lack of an equivalent theoretical framework to counteract the hegemony of the biomedical model of "mental illness" and to underpin and guide the implementation of the CRPD for people with psychiatric diagnoses. Critically engaging with some recent attempts to make the CRPD provisions integral to psychiatry, we expose fundamental contradictions inherent in such projects. Our discussion seeks to extend the task of implementation of the CRPD beyond reforming psychiatry, suggesting a much broader agenda for change. We argue for the indispensability of first-person knowledge in developing and owning this agenda and point to the dangers of merely remaking former treatment objects into objects of human rights. At the Paris Colloquium held forty years ago, and which this paper celebrates, the issue of psychosurgery had not been tackled yet. At that time psychosurgery was tainted by the controversial history of lobotomy and leucotomy. Supporters of psychosurgery at the time of the Colloquium were preparing their fourth International Conference, which was held in Madrid the following year. This represented a key characteristic of the collective, institutional and symbolic action of psychosurgery practitioners. At the end of the seventies, their strategy changed as noted below. Furthermore, we focus on the special importance of the results presented and commented on by psychosurgery supporters, including its conception and classification throughout the rhetoric historically involved (its supposed ventriloquism, its persuasive strength). Based on this view, we suggest a critical reflection encompassing old and new psychosurgery, while questioning the value of new rhetorical devices for the assessment and presentation of psychosurgery results after the surge of Deep Brain Stimulation. Background: In India, the number of occupational therapy practitioners currently working in mental health settings is lower than most other specialities. The attitudes of students influence their interest in any field and their desire for working in it. The attitudes of undergraduate occupational therapy students towards mental health and psychiatry are examined, and the influence of attitudes on future career choices is explored. Objectives: To examine the attitudes of Indian undergraduate occupational therapy students towards mental health and psychiatry, and to explore the differences in attitudes across different years of study, gender, resulting from personal experiences, and educational coursework, and to examine if the attitudes influence future career choices. Study Design: Cross-sectional survey Method: Permission was obtained from heads of institutions of 14 occupational therapy colleges and the survey link was sent. In order to obtain a representative sample, the link was also shared on social groups. The purpose of the study, voluntary participation and confidentiality were explained on the landing page. The subsequent sections consisted of the demographic questionnaire, the Attitudes towards Psychiatry (ATP-30) Questionnaire and the Career Preferences Questionnaire. A total of Four Hundred and Two responses were obtained within the stipulated period. Statistical analysis was performed, and the odds ratio using logistic regression and Pearson correlation were determined. Results: Gender and contact with persons with mental illness were significant predictors of positive attitudes towards psychiatry. Females are 5.387 times more likely to have positive attitudes towards psychiatry. (OR=5.387, 95% CI 2.101 to 13.814, P=0.000). Furthermore, those in contact with persons with mental illness are 2.883 times more likely to have positive attitudes towards psychiatry. (OR=2.883, 95% CI 1.076 to 7.724, P=0.035). Moderately high positive correlations existed between attitudes towards psychiatry and career preference in psychiatry. Conclusions: Overall, positive attitudes were found. Significant correlations were seen across the domains of the ATP-30 and career preference in psychiatry. Female students are five times more likely to have positive attitudes than male students. Those in contact with persons with mental illness were almost thrice more likely to have positive attitudes than those without any contact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
