Advance directives are intended to extend patient autonomy by enabling patients to prospectively direct the care of their future incapacitated selves. There has been much discussion about issues such as whether the future incompetent self is identical to the agent who issues the advance directive or whether advance directives can legitimately secure patient autonomy. However, there is another important question to ask: to what extent and in what conditions is it ethically appropriate for one to limit the liberty or agency of one's future incompetent self by issuing an advance directive? In this paper, I use a virtue‐ethical approach to explore this question, focusing on the case of an advance directive for the future self with moderate dementia. First, I examine virtuous attitudes with regard to autonomy and argue that one can manifest vices or ethically undesirable character traits in trying to intervene in the future self's life. In particular, I argue that this case can manifest vices such as disdainfulness, intellectual arrogance, and self‐dictatorship, which is the vice of trying to control one's life to an excessive degree, and that a self‐dictator fails to give due moral consideration to the future self's liberty or agency. I then introduce the Daoist idea of wu‐wei, which recommends embracement of what happens in one's life, as one of the possible remedies for the overemphasis on the value of autonomy and control. This article reports on the proceedings of the forty-fifth annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), held in May 1989, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The four-day Conference consisted of 27 AAPOR paper panels, 5 WAPOR paper panels, 15 roundtables, two plenaries, and one didactic session. Together, these sessions included over 175 different presentations. The tally of all names listed in the program-including session chairpersons, discussants, roundtable panelists, paper givers and coauthors-indicates that 280 different persons contributed to the intellectual content of the conference program in some direct fashion. The two, evening plenary sessions focused on "Perestroika, Glasnost, and Public Opinion in the Soviet Union" and "Newspapers and Television as Election Pollsters: Do They Do Anything Right?" The didactic session was on "Designing Good Graphs." The AAPOR Award for exceptionally distinguished achievement was presented to Herbert E. Krugman.

The author reflects on the editorial board's involvement in symposiums and seminars for the "Journal of the Early Republic" in the 2007 publication. He acknowledges the editors that include, Dan Dupre, Graham Hodges and Dan Howe. He announces the 30th annual meeting of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic (SHEAR) which will be on July 17-20, 2008 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We believe that research, teaching, and practice are becoming increasingly disengaged from one another in the OR/MS ecosystem. This ecosystem comprises researchers, educators, and practitioners in its core along with end users, universities, and funding agencies. Continuing disengagement will result in OR/MS occupying only niche areas and disappearing as a distinct field even though its tools would live on. To understand the reasons for this disengagement better and to engender discussion among academics and practitioners on how to counter it, we present the ecosystem's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This year's conference, May 19-22, was the second held at "The Inn" at Buck Hill Falls, Pennsylvania, and the first under the new management of the inn. Attendance was large and, as usual for American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) conferences, the attendees were argumentative. It was a good and useful conference highlighted by three major sessions, the Paul Lazarsfeld Memorial Lecture given by Peter Rossi, the plenary session on the 1976 election, and the return of "The Author Meets the Critics" in honor of Shirley Star. The conference chair, Howard Freeman, and his able committee put together an outstanding program. An innovation this year was the introduction of two sessions of contributed papers. The growth in the number of papers that did not fit any particular session but were of high quality led to this departure. The large number of such papers is a healthy sign for the field as a whole. A strong effort to circulate campuses by Nelson Foote and his committee also led to a set of high quality submissions for the student award. As usual, Joe Klapper did yeoman work in planning and arranging the physical facilities.

This article reports on the annual membership meeting of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR), held on My 19, 1989, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Retiring president Phil Meyer presided the meeting. President Meyer called the meeting to order. He announced that Chuck Cowan has expressed his intention to step down as Site Selection Committee chair. He introduced Karen Goldenberg, who has been selected as Associate Site Selection Committee chair by the Executive Council. Meyer reiterated the Council's interest in hearing from volunteers to serve on the committee. He then turned to various Council members for reports of their committees' activities during the past year. In reviewing budgetary matters discussed during the past year, three items were noted. A review had been undertaken of the relative costs of supplying services to foreign members: while the dues structure was not covering the full cost of all these memberships, the Council agreed to continue to provide a small net subsidy to this class of members. Second, a decision was made to invest nonworking AAPOR cash balances in conservative bond funds in order to obtain a higher rate of return than is available in checking accounts. Third, slight revisions will be made to current accounting procedures to reflect better the allocation of funds to projects that continue across multiple fiscal years, such as the allocations to cover the production and printing of the AAPOR history.

The organization American Political Science Association held its thirty-fifth annual meeting at the Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D. C., during December 28-30, 1939. American Orthopsychiatric Association Inc. will hold its seventeenth annual meeting at Boston, Massachusetts, during February 22-24, 1940. The organization National Conference on Family Relations (NCFR) held its second annual meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during December 26-27, 1939. Members are entitled to a year's subscription to the magazine "Living," beginning with its first issue in January 1940. The significant articles presented in Philadelphia will be published in later issues of "Living." The program was organized under the leadership of Adolf Meyer, the eminent psychiatrist, who is president of the NCFR. Conference committees discussed significant subjects of special interest, including the economic basis of the family, education for family living, eugenics and the family, family counseling, marriage and family law, marriage and family research, and youth and its problems.

The final report of the 1963 meeting of the American Economic Association in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, indicated a total registration of 4,528, of which 2,651 were members of the American Economic Association. The net income from the meeting was $14,588.18. Of this amount, the American Economic Association received $7,477.77, based on the number who registered as members. Considerable progress was made in establishing the Association archives during 1963. All material, including correspondence and committee reports, dealing with major policy questions has been retained. It is planned to arrange the files in chronological order to facilitate the work of those interested in using the archives. As authorized by the Executive Committee at its March, 1903, meeting, the American Economic Association made a contract with the National Science Foundation to participate in the Foundation's National Register of Scientific and Technical Personnel. Data for the register will be obtained by sending out a questionnaire to members of the economics profession in mid-March 1964.

The Twentieth National Conference on Artificial Intelligence was held July 9-13, 2005, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
