Different heating processes were applied to pretreat the pulp and paper mill sludge to enhance the hydrolysis stage. Hot air oven, autoclave, microwave and water bath were used for comparison. Chemical analyses exposed that all the pretreatment methods have shown improvement in solubilisation of organic matter. Among the pretreatments studied, heat transfer through hot air (80 °C for 90 min) mode had the highest impact on sludge solubilisation. There was an increase in cellulose (P = 0.0096), acid soluble (P = 0.0053) and insoluble lignin (P = 0.0012), but decrease in hemicellulose (P = 0.0009) content after pretreatment. The XRD and FT-IR spectroscopic characterisation shows the development of aliphatic, unsaturated and carbonyl carbon functionalities in the pretreated samples at higher severities. FESEM picture also confirms the change in structure after pretreatment. Thus, pretreatments contribute to disruption of the lignocellulosic structure making the cellulose easily accessible to acidogenic microorganisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The efficient utilization of waste heat from industrial processes can provide a significant source of energy savings for production plants, as well as be a driver of sustainable operations and the abatement of emissions. Industrial waste heat usually is contained in liquid or gaseous outlet streams. Although the possible ways to utilize waste heat are discussed in a wide variety of papers, these either provide only a general overview of utilization options and opportunities or focus on a narrow range of industrial processes. The aim of the present paper is to discuss the practical aspects of waste heat utilization in the European Union so that the reader can gain perspective on (i) the thermal classification of waste heat, (ii) liquid and gaseous waste streams and their typical temperatures for industrial use cases, (iii) the technical, economic, physical, and environmental aspects barring full utilization of the available waste heat, (iv) waste heat sources in various industries, and (v) standardized equipment and technologies applicable to industrial waste heat utilization, including their advantages, disadvantages, and weak points. A solution-processed conductive paper heater (CPH) with metallic features is used as a new class of low voltage ignitor of nanoenergetic materials (nEMs). In contrast to conventional electrothermal ignition techniques that typically require high operating voltages, the combustion of a paper substrate with a relatively low ignition point generates high thermal energy instantaneously, which makes it possible to ignite nEMs even at low voltages as low as ∼1 V. In addition, the ignition and explosion properties of CPH-based low voltage ignitors are highly controllable and reproducible, mainly due to their simple fabrication and reliable electrical properties. Based on the low voltage ignition property, a compact remote ignition system is demonstrated by integrating wireless a switching circuit, portable batteries, and heater mounter in a small plastic package and operated remotely to ignite the nEMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a microwave plasma reactor was used for pyrolysis of waste papers. The effects of different argon flow rates on char and gas generation were investigated. Changes in carbon and oxygen contents from those in paper to char were significant. Char yield of over 25 % was obtained with the heating value of about 38 MJ/kg. Average gas yield and total content of combustible fraction (CO, CH4 and H2) in the gas product were 2.56 m3/kg and 36 %, respectively. Due to the serious problems with energy efficiency, carbon emissions, and thermal comfort of rural residences in northern China, an optimization of active and passive heating technologies for rural residences is necessary. In this paper, an optimization for rural residences in northern China is conducted with four objectives: the whole life cycle carbon emission; the annual energy consumption through heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; the annual cost; and thermal comfort. In addition, the optimization model with active–passive heating technology synergy is resolved by NSGA-II genetic algorithm. The active and passive design variables, including the type of air source heat pump, orientation, the type and thickness of envelope insulation, the layer of window glass, the window-to-wall area ratio, as well as sunspace parameters are preferred to obtain the optimal solution. The results indicate that the optimal solution obtained by the ideal point method gives the most outstanding performance. Compared with the prototype, the optimized carbon emissions in severe cold and cold regions decreased by 56.1% and 54.6%, respectively. The annual energy consumption decreased by 59.7% and 62.2%. Finally, the roof insulation thickness is the most sensitive design variable in Pareto-optimal solution sets. In order to understand the application of iot Big data information acquisition for heating control systems, a research on iot Big data information acquisition for thermal storage heating control systems is proposed. This paper first analyzes the shortcomings of the traditional heating system, the heating data is scattered and difficult to collect. The IoT technology is applied to the heating platform through data acquisition, data visualization, data mining, data management and other aspects. Secondly, the application of the IoT in heating system data acquisition is studied, including the types of heating data collected, data acquisition process, data acquisition standards, etc. Finally, this paper takes the energy-saving transformation of 26 boilers in a heating enterprise as an example. The research results show that the boiler efficiency obtained in real time by using the online monitoring system of this project is 95.36%, and the reverse balance boiler efficiency in the paper report of the special inspection office is 94.88%, with a deviation of 1.48%. The application of the IoT technology can obtain the boiler indicators in real time and effectively, and can realize the comprehensive analysis of the monitoring data, and realize the evaluation of the energy efficiency operation state of the gas boiler and the fault diagnosis and early warning. This paper aims to provide discernment toward establishing a general framework, dedicated to data analysis and forecasting in smart buildings. It constitutes an industrial return of experience from an industrialist specializing in IoT supported by the academic world. With the necessary improvement of energy efficiency, discernment is paramount for facility managers to optimize daily operations and prioritize renovation work in the building sector. With the scale of buildings and the complexity of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, the use of artificial intelligence is deemed the cheapest tool, holding the highest potential, even if it requires IoT sensors and a deluge of data to establish genuine models. However, the wide variety of buildings, users, and data hinders the development of industrial solutions, as specific studies often lack relevance to analyze other buildings, possibly with different types of data monitored. The relevance of the modeling can also disappear over time, as buildings are dynamic systems evolving with their use. In this paper, we propose to study the forecasting ability of the widely used Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network algorithm, which is well-designed for time series modeling, across an instrumented building. In this way, we considered the consistency of the performances for several issues as we compared to the cases with no prediction, which is lacking in the literature. The insight provided let us examine the quality of AI models and the quality of data needed in forecasting tasks. Finally, we deduced that efficient models and smart choices about data allow meaningful insight into developing time series modeling frameworks for smart buildings. For reproducibility concerns, we also provide our raw data, which came from one "real" smart building, as well as significant information regarding this building. In summary, our research aims to develop a methodology for exploring, analyzing, and modeling data from the smart buildings sector. Based on our experiment on forecasting temperature sensor measurements, we found that a bigger AI model (1) does not always imply a longer time in training and (2) can have little impact on accuracy and (3) using more features is tied to data processing order. The temperature distribution is vital to the lifetime and reliability of converter transformer bushings. However, the temperature distribution of epoxy impregnated paper converter bushings under a certain current has usually been calculated through the two dimensional model, without considering the heat convection and radiation effects. In this paper, using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element method (FEM) analysis, a 3-D electromagnetic-fluid-thermal analysis method has been proposed. With the considering of heat conduction, heat convection and radiation, the temperature distribution of the converter transformer bushing has been simulated according to the actual operating environment. The temperature and velocity distribution of the converter transformer bushing has been obtained. Moreover, the simulation results have been compared with the experimental results to verify the accuracy of the simulation method. The simulation results, especially for the inner conductor, external conductor and the epoxy impregnated paper, are very close to the experimental results and the maximum temperature difference percentage is within 10 %, which indicates the accuracy and effectiveness of the electromagnetic-fluid-thermal analysis method proposed. The suppressive effect of triazole-based passivators such as 1,2,3-benzotriazole (BTA) and Irgamet 39 and duration of the suppressive effect on copper sulfide deposition are investigated by changing the time when passivators are added to oil. All corrosive sulfur tests were performed by the method stipulated by IEC 62535. In order to simulate the timing for adding passivators into actual transformers, preheated and non-preheated oils were used for corrosive sulfur test. Adding a passivator into preheated oil simulates the condition where a passivator is added into the transformer after a period of operation, and adding a passivator into non-preheated oil simulates the condition where a passivator is added before operation. Although the deposition rate of copper sulfide in preheated oil with the addition of passivator was lower in preheated oil without passivator, copper sulfide deposition still continued even while the passivator was detected in the oil. The result suggests that the precursors of copper sulfide have been already generated in preheated oil before adding a passivator. After the passivator was depleted in the oil, the period until onset of copper sulfide deposition in the preheated oil was shorter than in non-preheated oil since a protective complex layer was created on the copper surface and reaction with the passivator continued to prevent the deposition of copper sulfide precursors. In this paper, we generalize a fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) based preconditioner and propose a novel α -absolute value preconditioner for all-at-once systems from heat equations. Our preconditioner is symmetric positive definite and can also be computed efficiently using fast Fourier transforms or discrete sine transforms (DSTs). Furthermore, we prove that the corresponding preconditioned matrix has a unitary-plus-low-rank decomposition, and the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix are clustered at ±1, which leads to fast convergence rate of the preconditioned MINRES method. The ionosphere can be artificially modified by employing ground-based high-power high-frequency electromagnetic waves to irradiate the ionosphere. This modification is achieved through the nonlinear interaction between the electromagnetic waves and the ionospheric plasma, leading to changes in the physical properties and structure of the ionosphere. The degree of artificial modification of the ionosphere is closely related to the heating energy density of high-frequency pump waves. Due to the high density of neutral constituents in the lower ionosphere and the high frequency of electron-neutral collisions, the energy of heating pump waves will be absorbed and attenuated during the penetration of the low ionosphere, seriously affecting the heating effect. This paper proposes a method to reduce the absorption of ionospheric heating pump waves by releasing electron attachment chemicals into low ionosphere to form a large-scale electron density hole. A model for mitigating pump waves absorption based on SF6 release is established, and the absorption at different frequencies is quantitatively calculated. The propagation characteristics of high-frequency signals in ionospheric holes are studied using a three-dimensional ray tracing method, and the results demonstrate that the chemical release method not only reduces the absorption attenuation of heating pump waves but also forms spherical electron density holes, which exhibit a focusing effect on the heating beam and enhance the heating effect. The results are of great significance for understanding the nonlinear interaction between electromagnetic wave and ionospheric plasma and improving the ionospheric heating efficiency. Clean heating transformation and photovoltaic (PV) promotion gradually have become the keys to realize dual carbon strategy goals. Based on this, the combined application of building-integrated PV (BIPV) systems and air-source heat pump (ASHP) systems has received widespread attention. However, the current combined system still presents problems such as the mismatching in time between PV output and heating load. Therefore, in this paper, a novel BIPV and ASHP coupling system is proposed, and the operation parameters were optimized using low-carbon community as an example. A conventional PV and heat pump (HP) combined system, ASHP heating, and coal-fired heating were employed as the baseline and compared with the novel system. The results show that the optimized system can improve the PV power local accommodation rate by 43% compared with a conventional PV and ASHP coupling system. In terms of economic and environmental benefits, the operating cost of the optimized system is 50% of the cost of the ASHP system. Compared with coal-fired heating system, the annual air pollutant and carbon emissions can be reduced by 92% and 57%, respectively. The system also can improve the stability of power grid operation. In this paper, solar energy is used as the auxiliary heat source of the ocean thermal energy radial inflow turbine, and the thermodynamic model of the circulation system is established. In addition, the ejector is introduced into the ocean thermal power generation system, and the process simulation is carried out using Aspen Plus V12. To address performance attenuation of the radial turbine under varying working conditions, shape optimization of a 30 kW OTEC radial turbine was conducted. Finally, the off-design performance variation in the radial inflow turbine is analyzed in the presence of a solar auxiliary heat source. The results show that the use of an auxiliary heat source can effectively improve the cycle efficiency of the system and is also conducive to the stable operation of the radial turbine. In recent years, SiC single crystal growth technology has been developed toward larger size and thickness to reduce the cost of SiC-based power devices. Resistance heating has gradually become a hot spot for research because the crystals grown by the induction heating display the disadvantages of high stress and defect density. In this paper, the design of resistance heaters for SiC crystal growth was thoroughly investigated via numerical simulation. A simulation of the thermal field generated by different resistive heater arrangements was performed. The stress and dislocation distribution in crystals under different growth conditions were studied. Based on the comprehensive requirements of a small radial temperature gradient and a large growth rate, the arrangement and length of the resistance heater were proposed. In the realm of high-tech materials and energy applications, accurately measuring the transient heat flow at media boundaries and the internal thermal conductivity of materials in harsh heat exchange environments poses a significant challenge when using conventional direct measurement methods. Consequently, the study of photothermal parameter reconstruction in translucent media, which relies on indirect measurement techniques, has crucial practical value. Current research on reconstructing photothermal properties within participating media typically focuses on single-objective or time-invariant properties. There is a pressing need to develop effective methods for the simultaneous reconstruction of time-varying thermal flow fields and internal thermal conductivity at the boundaries of participating media. This paper introduces a computational model based on the numerical simulation theory of internal heat transfer systems in participating media, stochastic particle swarm optimization algorithms, and Kalman filter technology. The model aims to enable the simultaneous reconstruction of various thermal parameters within the target medium. Our results demonstrate that under varying levels of measurement noise, the inversion results for different target parameters exhibit slight oscillations around the true values, leading to a reduction in reconstruction accuracy. Copper sulfide deposition on cellulosic insulating materials in oil-immersed transformers is evaluated by heating tests stipulated by IEC 62535. Although this method is suitable for evaluation of the corrosivity of unused insulating oil, the subject remains in diagnosis of the insulating oil used. It is because dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS), which is the prime compounds that cause copper sulfide deposition, is consumed by the reaction with copper during operating of transformer. Therefore, it is necessary to detect the existence of DBDS in insulating oil diagnosed as non-corrosivity by IEC 62535. The proceeding paper [6] reports that Bibenzyl (BiBz) and Dibenzyl sulfide (DBS) will be formed in the insulating oil as by-products of copper sulfide formation between copper and DBDS in oxygen-poor atmosphere which imitated the closed-type transformers. These by-products are considered to be the indication of copper sulfide formation. However, the influence of oxygen and addition agent (e.g. 2,6-di-tert-butylp- cresol) on the mechanism of the by-product formation is unclear. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the influence of oxygen and DBPC in by-products formation for development of diagnosis. It became apparent that benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and benzoic acid generate as by-products of copper sulfide formation in the air atmosphere which imitated the open-breathing transformers. Furthermore, it became apparent that the reaction product of benzyl radical and the radical of DBPC generates as by-product of copper sulfide formation in the insulating oil containing DBPC. The combined production of electricity and thermal energy (combined heat and power or co-generation) is the most efficient and convenient approach to reduce costs for energy at industrial power plants and district heating plants that use natural gas as fuel to produce thermal energy for various needs. This paper analyses the operational characteristics of the combined heat and power plant, which has been operating since January 1, 2021, at the Voždovac Heating Plant as part of the Belgrade district heating system. The combined heat and power plant consists of three gas engine units with a total nominal electric power of 10 MW and thermal power of 10.1 MW, which use natural gas as fuel. The combined heat and power plant is used for district heating and preparing domestic hot water while electricity is sold to the local electric grid. The analysis in this paper focuses on the plant's operational characteristics: the number of working hours, the total energy consumption and energy production, the efficiency as well as the operational and maintenance costs. Also, the impact of the drastic changes in the prices of natural gas, electricity, and maintenance costs in the last year on the financial profitability of the combined heat and power plant was analysed in particular. This paper summarises the results of an experimental campaign carried out at SIET on the ELSMOR facility built in 2022 to validate a decay heat removal system for the E-SMR. Based on the passive mechanisms of natural circulation, the system aims to dissipate the reactor decay heat to a water pool, using two heat exchangers: a plate-type one coupling the primary side to the secondary side, and a vertical tube one coupling the secondary side to the water pool. Such a system is considered to be the most effective passive system, capable of safely managing the SMR accident and accidental situations, and achieving long-term decay heat removal without the need for electricity or external inputs. A description of the primary and secondary loops of the plant is given, together with the installed instrumentation and data acquisition system. The hot spot temperature inside the windings of the oil-immersed power transformers may exceed 200 °C due to some winding deficiencies, posing negative impact on the paper insulation. A series of heating experiments are deliberately conducted with oil-paper insulation samples to study the influence of the hot spot temperature ranging from 120 to 280 °C, and the insulation degradation is characterized by the breakdown voltage (BDV) and the degree of polymerization (DP). Furthermore, surface morphology, water content and cellulose degradation mechanism are analyzed so as to reveal the causes of the above phenomena. The experimental results indicate that with increase of the hot spot temperature, the breakdown voltage increases after the first drop, while the DP continues to decline in the tested temperature range. No obvious linear relationship is observed between the hot spot temperature and the DP or the BDV. Regarding the test samples the authors have studied, the inflection point of the hot spot temperature for the insulation deterioration is found to be between 240 and 260 °C. Copper sulfide deposition on cellulosic insulating materials in oil-immersed transformers was investigated by heating tests stipulated by IEC 62535 with controlled atmospheres to which mineral insulating oils were exposed. Both oxygen in the atmosphere and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol (DBPC) in the oil were found to accelerate the copper sulfide deposition on the insulating paper when the oil contains dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS). The weight of copper sulfide deposition on the insulating paper was found to increase when the oxygen concentration was increased up to 20 volume %. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis was applied to study the chemical bonding state of copper atoms in copper deposits on the insulating paper for the first time. In view of the prominent and intractable problems of frequent high temperature alarms of the communication equipment and high energy consumption of air conditioners in Zhengzhou communication outdoor cabinets, a temperature control system with heat pipe as the main part and air conditioner as the auxiliary part is proposed in this paper. Heating buildings with solar energy is challenged by the seasonal mismatch between solar availability and heating demand. Thermochemical energy storage is a promising technology to overcome this challenge because of its high energy density. In building applications, space requirement is also an important consideration. Therefore, both the storage space and collector areas are important considerations, with only the latter often being neglected in previous studies. This paper proposes a novel two-stage thermochemical heat pump heating system based on the working pair of NaOH/H2O. We demonstrate that this system can work with a concentration difference (70% wt–30% wt) for the climate in hot summer and cold winter regions in China. The energy storage density based on the discharged solution is 363 kWh/m3. With this solar-driven thermochemical heat pump heating system, 35.13 m2 of collectors and 10.48 tons of 70% wt NaOH solution are sufficient to complete a full charge–discharge cycle and meet the heating demand of a single-family house (winter space heating + DHW: 9370 kWh, summer DHW: 2280 kWh). The theoretical maximum storage for solution (discharged + water tank) is 32.47 m3. Compared with the sensible seasonal storage alternative, the collector area is reduced by 12.5% and the storage space is reduced by 59%, with a possible further reduction through optimization. With the potential to be further optimized for space saving, the two-stage solar–NaOH heat pump heating system is an energy-efficient and space-efficient heating system for buildings in the hot summer and cold winter regions of China. The current state of mixed ionic–electronic conducting ceramic membrane technology presents significant advancements with potential applications in various fields including solid oxide electrolyzers, fuel cells, hydrogen production, CO2 reduction, and membrane reactors for chemical production and oxygen separation. Particularly in oxygen separation applications, optimal conditions closely align with the conditions of oxygen-rich air streams emitted from the anode of solid oxide co-electrolyzers. This paper describes and analyzes a novel integrated heat recovery system based on mixed ionic–electronic conducting membranes. The system operates in two stages: firstly, oxygen is separated from the anode output stream using mixed ionic–electronic conducting membranes aided by a vacuum system, followed by the heat recovery process. Upon oxygen separation, the swept gas stream is recirculated at temperatures near thermoneutral conditions, resulting in performance improvements at both cell and system levels. Additionally, an oxygen stream is generated for various applications. The supercritical CO2 power cycle driven by solar as a new generation of solar thermal power generation technology has drawn significant attention worldwide. In this paper, a cogeneration system derived from a supercritical CO2 recompression Brayton cycle is proposed, by considering the recovery of waste heat from the turbine outlet. The absorption refrigeration cycle is powered by the medium-temperature waste heat from the turbine outlet, while the low-temperature waste heat is employed for heating, achieving the cascaded utilization of the heat from the turbine outlet. As for the proposed combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system, a dynamic model was built and verified in MATLAB R2021b/Simulink. Under design conditions, values for the energy utilization factor (EUF) and exergy efficiency of the cogeneration system were obtained. Moreover, the thermodynamic performances of the system were investigated in variable cooling/heating load and irradiation conditions. Compared with the reference system, it is indicated that the energy utilization factor (EUF) and exergy efficiency are 84.7% and 64.8%, which are improved by 11.5% and 10.3%. In this paper, the experimental results of the thermal sub-system of a reliable and cost-effective polygeneration solar system are presented. This polygeneration system produces heating, cooling, and electricity from solar energy, which is used in an existing test building. Heat is generated in four evacuated tube solar collectors (ETCs). The heat may be used for space cooling through a variable geometry ejector (VGE) heat pump. In order to reduce the mismatches between generation and consumption, two thermal storage tanks were added. The performance of a new thermal storage, with 400 L, able to store both sensible and latent heat, was tested. The heating performances of the test building were assessed. Ejector cycle tests were also performed, and the variation of the cooling coefficient of performance (COP) was calculated for different flow rates. For heating, the results showed that the heat storage was capable of heating the test building for 8 h, with temperatures between 22 °C and 26 °C. The magnetic nature of coronal heating has been actively investigated within the framework of theoretical models and statistical analysis of observational data for decades. At present, a rather wide range of possible mechanisms has been proposed in the literature that requires additional verification. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of analysing the magnetic nature of coronal heating by means of magnetoacoustic (MA) waves propagating in coronal structures. To address this issue, we perform the analysis of fast and slow waves using a magnetic slab geometry. Applying the assumption of strong magnetic structuring, we derive the dispersion relation, which allows us to study the properties of MA waves. To analyse the dependence of phase velocity and wave decrement/increment on wavenumber, we numerically solved the obtained equations using the parameters corresponding to 'warm' coronal loop. It is shown that oscillations on the fundamental harmonic in a plasma with a weak magnetic field, where the effect of phase velocity dispersion is most pronounced, are best suited for diagnostics of magnetic heating using slow MA waves. In turn, the geometry remains the primary source for fast MA wave dispersion. Magnetic heating can either suppress or increase the damping of fast and slow MA waves. Moreover, the amplification of fast MA waves accompanied by damping of slow MA waves can be achieved. Temperature evolution during plastic deformation is of great importance for the design of manufacturing processes, as well as for the analysis and prediction of tool wear. However, the results from experimental- and numerical-type research are still often contradictory. In this paper, we analyze methods for estimating plasticity-induced heating directly from displacement fields that can be recorded during experiments or extracted from simulation results. In terms of computational methodology, the thermodynamically motivated energy-based variational formulation of the coupled thermo-mechanical boundary-value problem is adapted to the problem at hand. Since an analysis of this variational formulation exhibits challenges and distinct inconsistencies with respect to the problem at hand, an alternative approach is proposed. This alternative approach is essentially a purely thermal finite element simulation, and it is conducted using a heat source term that is empirically based on the fraction of irreversible deformation work converted to heat. Our approach estimates plasticity-induced heating based on the strain and strain rate data derived from displacement fields. We therefore incorporate thermo-visco-plastic constitutive behavior (Johnson–Cook) with a thermodynamically motivated model that specifies the fraction of plastic work converted to heat (the Taylor–Quinney coefficient). The Casimir–Lifshitz force of friction between neutral bodies in relative motion, along with the drag effect, causes their heating. This paper considers this frictional heating in a system of two metal plates within the framework of fluctuation electromagnetic theory. Analytical expressions for the friction force in the limiting cases of low (zero) temperature and low and high speeds, as well as general expressions describing the kinetics of heating, have been obtained. It is shown that the combination of low temperatures (T < 10 K) and velocities of 10–103 m/s provides the most favorable conditions when measuring the Casimir–Lifshitz friction force from heat measurements. In particular, the friction force of two coaxial disks of gold 10 cm in diameter and 500 nm in thickness, one of which rotates at a frequency of 10–103 rps (revolutions per second), can be measured using the heating effect of 1–2 K in less than 1 min. With the progress of modern times, automobile technology has become integral to human society. At the same time, the need for energy has also grown. In parallel, the total amount of waste energy that is liberated from different parts of the automobile has also increased. In this ever-increasing energy demand pool, future energy shortages and environmental pollution are the primary concerns. A thermoelectric generator (TEG) is a promising technology that utilizes waste heat and converts it into useful electrical power, which can reduce fuel consumption to a significant extent. This paper comprehensively reviews automobile thermoelectric generators and their technological advancements. The review begins by classifying different waste heat technologies and discussing the superiority of TEGs over the other existing technologies. Then, we demonstrate the basic concept of and advancements in new high-performance TEG materials. Following that, improvements and associated challenges with various aspects, such as the heat exchanger design, including metal foam, extended body, intermediate fluid and heat pipe, leg geometry design, segmentation, and multi-staging, are discussed extensively. Thermal energy represents more than half of the energy needs of European industry, but is still misspent in processes as waste heat, mostly between 100 and 200 °C. Waste heat recovery and reuse provide carbon-free heat and reduce production costs. The industrial sector is seeking affordable and rugged solutions that should adapt the heat recovery to heat demand. This study aims to identify suitable latent heat materials to reach that objective: the selected candidates should show good thermal performance that remains stable after aging and, in addition, be at a reasonable price. This paper details the selection process and aging results for two promising phase change materials (PCMs): adipic and sebacic acid. They showed, respectively, melting temperatures around 150 °C and 130 °C, degradation temperatures (mass lost higher than 1%) above 180 °C, and volumetric enthalpy of 95 and 75 kWh·m−3. They are both compatible with the stainless steel 316L while their operating temperature does not exceed 15 °C above the melting temperature, but they do not comply with the industrial recommendation for long-term use in contact with the steel P265GH (corrosion speed > 0.2 mm·year−1). Across Europe, countries are reducing CO2 emissions and energy demand by lowering the temperature in public office buildings. These measures affect men and women unequally because the latter prefer and, indeed, perform better under higher temperatures than the standard temperature. Lowering the temperature thus further increases an already existing inequality. We show that the philosophical literature on discrimination provides an interesting theoretical approach to understanding such measures. On prominent understandings of what discrimination is, the policy would be considered direct discrimination against women if it could be shown to reflect a broader inattentiveness to the needs of women in society. Alternatively, and more straightforwardly, the policies can be considered indirect discrimination because of their disparate effects on men and women. The final part of the paper shows that the policies are also wrong for the reasons it is often argued that discrimination is wrong—to wit, that it harms or disrespects those who are discriminated against. In this paper, we analyze the identification of the amount of pollutant discharged problem by each source in a heat system when the dynamics of the state are governed by a parameterized unknown operator. In this way, we introduce the notion of average sentinel. The decomposition method is used to solve the equation of this problem, the gradient method is used to calculate the averaged control, and the combination of the two methods is used to estimate the pollution terms. This paper describes the effect of preliminary low-energy mechanical activation of nickel powder on the thermal explosion of a Ni3Al intermetallic compound. Two synthesis methods are considered. The first method requires that a mixture is continuously heated by an external energy source. The second method requires that an external source is turned off upon reaching a certain temperature. It is revealed that low-energy mechanical activation of nickel intensifies the Ni3Al synthesis. With continuous heating, the ignition temperature does not depend on activation time and is equal to the melting point of aluminum. In the case of heating with an external source turned off, preliminary activation of nickel reduces the solid-phase ignition temperature. The development of space exploration technologies puts higher demand on space power systems. The space reactor gas turbine cycle (SRGTC) has the advantages of compact configuration and small mass and volume and is one of the optimal options for future high-power space power systems. The SRGTC operates in an isolated island state and the radiator is fragile if it is hit by asteroids and space debris. The transient characteristics of the SRGTC are fundamental for safe operation in radiator loss accidents. In this paper, a dynamic model for the SRGTC is established, and the performance of the SRGTC with dual power conversion unit (PCU) modules (SRGTC-DPCU) after radiator loss was investigated. The results indicated that the waste heat of the system was accumulated in the radiator after radiator loss, which increased the consumed power of the compressor and further led to speed fluctuations. The bypass valve control and the temperature negative feedback effect can ensure the safe operation of the shaft and the reactor. More radiator loss decreased the speed far below the rated speed and exceeded the safety margin of the bypass valve control, which further led to system shutdown. There is a safety boundary of radiator loss accidents. Furthermore, the coupling effects of multiple PCUs after radiator loss were analyzed. The working fluid inventory was redistributed among the PCU modules. The reduction of working fluid inventory in the accident PCU module promoted the safety boundary. In a time where sustainability and CO2 efficiency are of ever-increasing importance, heating systems deserve special considerations. Despite well-functioning hardware, inefficiencies may arise when controller parameters are not well chosen. While monitoring systems could help to identify such issues, they lack improvement suggestions. One possible solution would be the use of digital twins; however, critical values such as the water consumption of the residents can often not be acquired for accurate models. To address this issue, coarse models can be employed to generate quantitative predictions, which can then be interpreted qualitatively to assess "better or worse" system behavior. In this paper, we present a simulation and calibration framework as well as a preprocessing module. These components can be run locally or deployed as containerized microservices and are easy to interface with existing data acquisition infrastructure. We evaluate the two main operating modes, namely automatic model calibration, using measured data, and the optimization of controller parameters. Our results show that using a coarse model of a real heating system and data augmentation through preprocessing, it is possible to achieve an acceptable fit of partially incomplete measured data, and that the calibrated model can subsequently be used to perform an optimization of the controller parameters in regard to the simulated boiler gas consumption. This paper presents the concept of an innovative control of a central heating system in a multifamily building based on the original thermodynamic model, the resulting architecture of the control system, and the originally designed and manufactured wireless temperature sensors for thermal zones. The novelty of this solution is the developed layers of the control system: distributed measurement and correction analysis, which is based on the existing infrastructure and the local HVAC controller. This approach allows for the effective use of the measured temperature data from thermal zones and finally sending the value of the calculated correction of settings to the controller. Moreover, in the analytical layer, a model was also implemented that calculates the necessary amount of energy based on data from the subsystem of temperature sensors located in the thermal zones of the building. The use of the algorithmic strategy presented in this paper extends the functionality and significantly improves the energy efficiency of the existing, classic, reference heating control algorithm by implementing additional control loops. Additionally, it enables integration with demand-side response systems. The presented concept was successfully tested, achieving real energy savings for heating by 12%. These results are described in a case-study format. The authors believe that this concept can be used in other buildings and thus will have a positive impact on the energy savings used to maintain thermal comfort in buildings and significantly reduce CO2 emissions. In this paper, an experimental and numerical study of a novel heating strategy is shown for thin profiled workpieces using induction and convective heating at the same time. A characteristic of induction heating is its potential for achieving efficient local heating due to the direct conversion of electromagnetic fields to thermal energy. One disadvantage of this is the high temperature gradients that occur on the workpiece and, therefore, the uneven distribution. This is even more significant for thin workpieces or workpieces made out of sheet metal due to the lighter mass and, therefore, less conduction away from the heating zone. This paper presents the idea of combining induction heating with convection to obtain a more even distribution of the temperature but with considerable energy savings compared to pure convective heating. The combination of both heating methods has been analysed both experimentally and numerically with different geometries. The multiphysic simulation included both the induction heating and also the convective heat transfer for temperature-dependent material properties. The results of the simulations and the experiments were in good agreement, and both showed that there is a huge potential for energy savings when convective heating is supported by induction heating (up to 53%). Abstract: Carbon paper is commonly used as the gas diffusion layer (GDL) in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells as it exhibits high chemical and mechanical durability. This diffusion medium is also anisotropic, which directly affects its transport properties and specifically the thermal conductivity. In this study, the in-plane thermal conductivity of the carbon paper GDL was determined using thermal diffusivity measurements for a temperature range from −20 to +120°C and four Teflon loadings (0, 5, 20 and 50wt.%). It is important to understand the effect of temperature on the thermal conductivity since PEM fuel cells are designed to operate under various temperatures depending on the application of use. Further, Teflon is used to change the hydrophobic properties of the carbon paper GDL with 20wt.% as the most widely used percentage. In this study, the Teflon loadings were chosen to gain a comprehensive understanding of the thermal resistance due to Teflon. In this study, a quasi-steady method was used to measure the thermal properties of the carbon paper; hence, the phase transformation in the presence of PTFE was investigated. The thermal conductivity decreases with an increase in temperature for all samples. The addition of as little as 5wt.% Teflon resulted in high thermal resistance decreasing the overall thermal conductivity of the sample. Further addition of Teflon did not have major effects on the thermal conductivity. For all treated samples, the thermal conductivity lies in the range of 10.1–14.7W/mK. Finally, empirical relations for the thermal diffusivity and conductivity with temperature were deduced. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In a search for mineral oil substitutes, we focus on silicone and ester oil. These insulating oils are fire-resistant and environmentally friendly. In previous studies, we investigated streaming electrification and dielectric breakdown phenomena in these new oils and found that their performance was similar to or better than that of mineral oil. In the present study, we focus on the thermal degradation of insulating oils. Thermal degradation tests in the presence of a solid insulator and copper carried out for 1000 h at 130 and 180 °C. Color changes, chemical analysis and dielectric breakdown characteristics were also investigated during thermal degradation of the insulating oils. We also investigated the mechanical strength of the solid insulator. The characteristics of aged oils were compared with those of fresh oils. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the research into modern thermal energy storage systems dedicated to autonomous buildings. The paper systematises the current state of knowledge concerning thermal energy storage systems and their use of either phase change materials or sorption systems; it notes their benefits, drawbacks, application options, and potential directions for future development. The rapid proliferation of studies on installation systems, new composites, and phase change materials requires a systematisation of the subject related to short- and long-term thermal energy storage in building structures. This paper focuses on assessing the validity of the current improved thermal energy storage solutions for buildings with very high energy efficiency standards and buildings that are energy-independent. The paper presents the current results of the energy and economic analyses of the use of heat storage systems in buildings. This paper shows the optimal heat storage systems for autonomous buildings. For the unsteady multi-boundary inverse heat conduction problem, a real-time solution method for boundary heat flux based on dynamic matrix control is proposed in the paper. The method solves the heat flux at the boundary in real-time by measuring the temperature information at the measurement points of the heat transfer system. A two-dimensional direct heat conduction model of the heat transfer system is established in the paper, and is solved by the finite difference method to obtain the temperature information of the measurement points under any heat flux boundary. Then, the correspondence between the heat flux of boundary and the temperature information is presented by means of a step-response model. The regularization parameters are introduced into the method to improve the stability of the inversion process, and the effect of real-time inversion on the heat flux of the boundary is achieved through rolling optimization. This paper aims to improve the strength of soft clay soil using thermal treatment through a laboratory study that simulates the field application. The laboratory work consisted of preparing a soft clay (Cu = 14 kPa) inside a metal box (92.5 × 92.5 × 92.5) cm3. Boreholes of diameter 43 mm, with different lengths, spacing, and arrangements, were made inside the soil to work as a guide for heating pipes which connected to a controlled heating system. A novel heating system, using gas as a heat source, was developed and manufactured. After the end of the treatment periods, a load was applied until failure on a (20 × 20) cm2 square footing. Various parameter spacings (3, 4, and 5 times the outer diameter of the borehole), depths (1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 times the width of the model footing), arrangements (square, circular, and triangular), and heating periods (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 h) were investigated. The results showed the strength and behavior of the soil when subjected to the heated boreholes at different spacings, depths, and heating times, which were determined to be three times the outer diameter of the borehole, two times the width of the square footing, and eight hours, respectively, while the effect of the arrangement of the heated borehole casings was small. Also, a cone penetration probe (CPT) conducted on the heated soil showed that the unconsolidated shear strength (Cu) increased from 14 to 360 kPa and then decreased to 140 kPa (as an average with depth). In contrast, the average angle of internal friction (Ø) increased from 0 to 52 degrees and decreased to 16 degrees (as an average with depth) from the center of the heating model to the furthest point affected by heating. The EDS formula showed that components such as silicon, aluminum, and iron decreased at 300 °C and increased at 400 °C in the treated soils. The calcium content increased at 200 °C and then decreased sharply at 400 °C. The carbon percentage increased at 300 °C and decreased at 400 °C. The paper discusses the results of investigations of the change in thermal and emission-related parameters of a heating boiler fueled with biomass after a modification with a proprietary flue gas recirculation system made for this type of equipment. The results provide insight into the combustion process with a multistage flue gas recirculation that materially affected the boiler operation: a reduction in the mass concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by reducing the combustion temperature. The authors also observed a reduction in the emission of particulate matters (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO). For the investigations, the authors used a heating boiler fitted with an automatic fuel feed (timber pellets) and a proprietary patented flue gas recirculation system (Polish patent Pat. 243395) for low power solid fuel heating boilers. Aside from the measurement of the mass concentration of the emitted pollutants, the research focused on the measurements of the temperature inside the combustion chamber, the temperature of the flue gas and the level of oxygen in the flue gas. The aim of the research was to confirm the validity of using the flue gas recirculation technique to reduce emissions of harmful substances from biomass heating boilers, as a technique not previously used for this group of devices. Moreover, the aim of the research was to test an original engineering solution, in the form of a flue gas distribution valve, and investigate its effect on reducing NOx emissions and improving other thermal and emission parameters of the boiler. In a previous work, a solar chimney power plant integrated with a solid sorption cooling system for power and cold cogeneration was developed. This prior work showed that reusing the heat released from the adsorption bed enhances the system's utilization of solar energy and increases the turbine's output power. In the present paper, a subsequent modification to the arrangement and operation of the preceding system is introduced. The primary objective of the modification is to enhance performance and increase the plant's capacity to effectively harness the available solar radiation. The method involves placing the condenser tubes at the solar collector entrance. Therefore, the airflow captures the condenser-released heat before it enters the collector. The modified configuration and operation of the system are discussed. A dynamic mathematical model is established to simulate the hybrid system's operation and evaluate its parameters. The obtained results show that a 5.95% increase in output power can be achieved by recovering the heat of condensation. Furthermore, the modified system attains a 6% increase in solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency compared with the basic system. Existing studies contend that latent heating (LH) will replace sensible heating (SH) to become the dominant factor affecting the development of the Tibetan Plateau vortex (TPV) after it moves off the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, in the process of the TPV moving off the TP requires that the airmass traverse the eastern slope of the Tibetan Plateau (ESTP) where the topography and diabatic heating (DH) conditions rapidly change. How LH gradually replaces SH to become the dominant factor in the development of the TPV over the ESTP is still not very clear. In this paper, an analysis of a typical case of a TPV with a long life history over the ESTP is performed by using multi-sourced meteorological data and model simulations. The results show that SH from the TP surface can change the TPV-associated precipitation distribution by temperature advection after the TPV moves off the TP. The LH can then directly promote the development of the TPV and has a certain guiding effect on the track of the TPV. The SH can control the active area of LH by changing the falling area of the TPV-associated precipitation, so it still plays a key role in the development and tracking of the TPV even though it has moved out of the main body of the TP.
