Large-scale clean-heating renovations are being carried out in northern China as part of important measures to optimize energy infrastructure, improve the atmospheric environment, and minimize peak CO2 emissions. Because rural areas in the urban–rural fringe are close to the city center, they have several advantages in centralized heating reforms, but there are no effective means to measure whether a transformation is economical or has good environmental effects. In this paper, based on an actual reconstruction project, 100 typical households were selected for a related test. These typical households evinced convergence and possessed certain regional characteristics; therefore, the applicability of the models had certain limitations. To make sure that the relevant factors were fully considered in establishing the model, a prediction model group was established regarding heat consumption in winter (four models in total) that could predict the actual effect well. Lastly, the authors used the model group to calculate economic effects and CO2 emission reduction in rural heating transformations in Beijing under different heating methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The district heating system (DHS) is one of the essential carriers for coordinating renewable energy with fossil energy and achieving flexible energy consumption. Considering the uncertainty of both the renewable energy units' power and the consumers' aggregate loads impact the transport process of the DHS, the thermal characteristics of the DHS transportation and the node temperature response under the source-load uncertainty need to be quantified and analyzed. This paper proposed a method to calculate the nodes' temperature dynamic response of the DHS under multiple source-load uncertainty scenarios. The prediction and combination methods of supply and demand probability intervals of source and load nodes under varying credibility levels were investigated. Additionally, the effects of source-load uncertainty boundary conditions on the DHS transport process were analyzed. The temperature response of the nodes was calculated based on the established dynamic DHS model under multiple source-load uncertainty scenarios. A DHS in Beijing was selected for case validation and analysis, and it has 90 nodes and 109 pipes. The simulation results showed that the relative average error of node flow rate in the dynamic DHS model was 3.02%, and the average difference in node temperature was 1 °C. The probability distribution semi-analytical method and the Bayesian credible interval calculation method can accurately describe the uncertainty on both source and load sides. To better make use of the waste heat in distributed data centers, a new design of integrated waste heat recovery system that can meet different needs including heating for users and data center cooling is introduced. The system can switch among different operation modes including waste heat recovery mode, natural cooling mode, composite cooling mode and refrigeration mode based on the ambient temperature. The integrated waste heat recovery system is experimented in the enthalpy-difference laboratory, and the experimental results show well consistency compared with the modeling results. The operation strategies to switch among different modes are determined based on the experimental and modeling results. The paper introduced PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) and ERE (Energy Reuse effectiveness) to comprehensively evaluate the cooling and energy reutilization effectiveness of the system. According to the evaluation result, the integrated waste heat recovery system has well performed energy effectiveness, environmental and economic effect. The ERE values of using the integrated waste heat recovery system in Chinese typical climate cities including Harbin, Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai and Guangzhou are 0.87, 1.02, 1.04, 1.17 and 1.29 respectively. Using this system at 96 kW distributed data center instead of CRAC (computer room air conditioning) system can save 152.7 MWh electricity, 56.4 tons of standard coal, and 244.7 tons of CO 2 emission in Beijing annually. PM2.5 concentration in Beijing China has become a focus for government and common people. It has been explored through source apportionment that heating generates significant influence on PM2.5 concentration in Beijing. However, there has still been great difficulty of quantitatively measuring the impact. In this paper, the author, taking PM2.5 in Beijing as research object, establishes a model of heating influence on PM2.5 emission. Data about the city's boiler number, distribution, fuel consumption as well as rural fuel consumption have been obtained through questionnaire. With the adoption of coefficients for producing and emitting pollutants, influence of heating factors in Beijing on PM2.5 concentration is evaluated quantitatively. High accuracy of the model in the paper has been proved through comparison with data of 2014 Beijing PM2.5 concentration monitored by Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection. According to evaluation result 10.9, heating contributes to 13.7% of PM2.5 emission in Beijing, 9.9% and 3.8% from the six urban districts and rural areas respectively. This paper proposed an active greenhouse heating system which focused on the problem of crop growth under extreme cold weather. At the beginning, heat transfer process of heating system was analysed based on thermal equilibrium theory. Radial and axial heat conduction mathematical analysis model of temperature control system were established respectively. Then, numerical simulation of temperature distribution was carried out by means of finite element method (FEM) software. When the effective operation range (later referred to as Qf) was defined with soil temperature more than 15 °C at 20 cm underground, opening temperature of heating system should be no less than 28 °C. Simulation results show that an increase of air inlet temperature by 2 °C could extend axial effective operating range by 2.4 m-2.8 m. Later, field test was implemented in greenhouses which located in Changping district, Beijing. Finally, compared with simulation data, the field testing data shows that the perturbation law of heating system heat transfer process on shallow and deep layer soil temperature is consistent with theoretical analysis. Air pollution has become an increasingly serious environmental problem in China. Especially in winter, the air pollution in northern China becomes even worse due to winter heating. The "coal to gas" policy, which uses natural gas to replace coal in the heating system in winter, was implemented in Beijing in the year 2013. However, the effects of this policy reform have not been examined. Using a panel dataset of 16 districts in Beijing, this paper employs a first difference model to examine the impact of the "coal to gas" policy on air quality. Strong evidence shows that the "coal to gas" policy has significantly improved the air quality in Beijing. On average, the "coal to gas" policy reduced sulfur dioxide ( SO 2 ), nitrogen dioxide ( NO 2 ), particulate matter smaller than 10 µm (PM10), particulate matter smaller than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) by 12.08%, 4.89%, 13.07%, 11.94% and 11.10% per year, respectively. We find that the "coal to gas" policy is more effective in areas with less energy use efficiency. Abstract: External wall insulation plays an important role in building energy consumption through affecting cooling and heating energy uses. In this paper, a study on the effects of external wall insulation thickness on annual cooling and heating energy uses under different Chinese climates is reported. Firstly, two indexes: Energy Gain Ratio (EGR) and Relative Variation Ratio (RVR) of the sum of annual cooling and heating energy uses, to assess the effects of external wall insulation thickness on energy saving potential are introduced. Secondly, a model space having four different exterior zones facing four different orientations in an office building is presented and the settings of the model space described. Lastly, the simulated annual cooling and heating energy uses for the four different exterior zones at different external wall insulation thicknesses under three different climates in China, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing, are reported. The results suggested that energy saving was significant by increasing the external wall insulation thickness in exterior zones facing all orientations under Beijing’s climate, since the heating energy use was dominant and can be reduced remarkably with the increase in insulation thickness. Under Shanghai’s climate, increasing external wall insulation thickness to over 26mm would not reduce the sum of annual heating and cooling energy uses in the south-facing exterior zone, but would help save energy in exterior zones facing the other three orientations. For all exterior zones under Guangzhou’s climate, it was, however, hardly possible to reduce the sum of annual heating and cooling energy uses by increasing the external wall insulation thickness. Abstract: Operation mode of combined cooling heating and power (CCHP) system determines its energetic and environmental performances. This paper analyzes the energy flows of CCHP system and separated production (SP) system. The fuel energy consumptions of CCHP system following electrical demand management (EDM) and thermal demand management (TDM) are deduced respectively. Three indicators: primary energy saving, exergy efficiency and CO2 emission reduction, are employed to evaluate the performances of CCHP system for a commercial building in Beijing, China. The feasibility analysis shows that the performance of CCHP system is strictly dependent upon building energy demands. The selection of CCHP operation modes is systemically based on building loads, CCHP system and local SP system. The calculation results conclude that CCHP system in winter under EDM achieves more benefits than in summer. The sensitivity discussion indicates that the coefficient of performance for cooling and the efficiency of electricity generation are the most sensitive variables to the energetic and environmental performances of CCHP system. Abstract: The use of groundwater for cooling and heating purposes is of interest from both the economical and the ecological perspective. The groundwater heat pump (GWHP) system utilizes groundwater as alternative renewable and clean energy source for space heating and/or cooling, withdraws water from a production well, passes it through a heat exchanger and discharges the water into an injection well. By utilizing the relatively stable temperature of groundwater, GWHP system can achieve a higher coefficient of performance. Due to the utilization of groundwater stored in the aquifer, the assessment of the hydraulic capacity of the aquifer based on numerical groundwater models is always needed for the optimum design and the efficient performance of GWHP. In this paper, numerical methods of underground heat-water transfer, energy balance method and thermal storage method were presented to calculate the capacity of unit area of shallow groundwater aquifer. The model results indicate that the numerical method, which is based on performance efficiency of GWHP, represents the behaviour of groundwater pumping/recharging processes, and serves better than energy balance method and thermal storage method, in addition it has been proven itself that this method has the advantages of energy saving and environmental protection. The calculated capacity is positively related to aquifer thickness. It is found that it is easy for ground water recharge in alluvial and pluvial fan located at the piedmont, while the calculated capacity is relatively smaller compared with that of south-east plain where it is not easy for groundwater recharge.
