Ground deformation on a regional to local scale is the consequence of a wide range of natural processes such as tectonic and anthropogenic activities. Globally, the over-extraction of groundwater and hydrocarbon exploitation are the primary causes of ground subsidence. The current study demonstrates regional scale ground subsidence analysis of the Dibrugarh and Digboi regions of Brahmaputra alluvial plain, Assam, Northeast India. To understand the ongoing surface deformation satellite base, the RADAR technique has been applied using SENTINEL-1A data, which were acquired between 15 October 2015 to 25 January 2022. The assessment carried out via the time series analysis of the radar data suggests that the Dibrugarh area is subsiding at a rate of ~5 mm/yr, whereas the Digboi is deforming at a much faster rate (±22 mm/yr) than Dibrugarh. The presence of active faults in the subsurface and associated deformation is another reason for active ground subsidence. The outcomes of the current study validate that the study area is currently undergoing active subsurface deformation caused by both endogenic as well as exogenic processes. Furthermore, our Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSInSAR) and satellite-based analysis suggest that the over-exploitation of the natural resources is enhancing the rate of deformation in the Brahmaputra alluvial plain in the northeast of India. Active surface deformation, displacement pattern, and erosional variability is estimated using the geomorphologically sensitive morphometry along with the Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSInSAR) technique using the Sentinel-1Adata (119 images) acquired between 07- 02-2017 and 10-02-2021. The average velocities for this dataset are estimated to be between ±11 mm/y. The Raunthi River catchment from where the flood was triggered is undergoing ~8 mm/y subsidence and ~10 mm/y uplift. Compared to this the basin wide deformation (Rishi Ganga basin) is estimated to be around ±10 mm/y with commulative ground displacement of around ±45 mm. The times series analysis suggests an increase in the ground displacement by around 5 mm/y and seems to be responsible for the expansion of pre-existing cracks in the vicinity of the Vaikrita Thrust (VT) and subsequent failure of the northern face of Nandi Peak on 7th February 2021. The Global Positioning System (GPS) derived strain distribution pattern indicate a relatively higher accumulation of strain (>0.35µ strain/y). The normalized steepness index (k sn) variation along the longitudinal section of Rishi Ganga and Raunthi River sub-basin in Central Himalayan region shows anomalous increase at the glacio-fluvial transitional processes. Moreover, the χ profiles as well as planform plots shows anomalously lower values within the Raunthi River sub-basin when compared with the Rishi Ganga basin. Based on the lower values of χ it is observed that Raunthi River sub-basin is undergoing high erosion which can be caused by the presence of sheared lithology and incision of the relict glacial and paraglacial sediments. We negate the suggestion that abrupt rise in the temperature was the major triggering mechanism for the recent disaster, instead it is the sheared lithology and pre-existing fissure developed because of differential uplift and subsidence in Raunthi River that led to the wedge failure and subsequent flash flood. Had the climate was the major driver of the recent tragedy ?, it should have impacted multiple hanging glaciers in the Rishi Ganga valley. Therefore, the study calls for detailed geomorphological, structural and glaciological investigation in regions dominated by glacial and paraglacial processes in the strategic regions of the Himalaya. Towards this, the state of art PSInSAR technique seems to provide fast and reliable detection of terrain instability/stability along with identification of potential areas of slope failures in near future in the glacial and preglacial zones. The present study area represents one of the active segments of the frontal part of the Arunachal Himalaya. The major structural boundaries traversing the area are the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and the Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT) and other local faults are tectonically active, as evident from the landforms that evolved in the fault zones. Strath terraces and uplift fluvial terraces are observed in the hanging‐wall block of the HFT and MBT, and along the HFT straight to curvilinear mountain fronts are observed. Normal faults both transverse and parallel to the strike of HFT are observed in the hanging‐wall block of the HFT. West of Pasighat the sub‐Himalaya terrain resembles a duplex, where there is gradual rise in elevation from the Brahmaputra Plain to the low‐lying hills of the sub‐Himalayan and sudden rise in elevation across the MBT. Drainage aligning to the bedrock structures and stream migrations are observed in the fault zones. Along the MBT, the sub‐Himalayan rocks are thrusted over either by quartzite or black carbonaceous shales, in some sections the MBT is behaving as a back‐thrust that dips towards the south. The MBT has also been displaced by almost N–S‐trending transverse faults where highly sheared bedrocks are also observed. Tilting of Quaternary fluvial deposits are observed in the hanging‐wall blocks of intraformational thrusts at two locations. Signatures of paleoseismic activities in the form of various soft‐sediment deformational structures are observed in Quaternary deposits in the HFT zone and also in the hanging‐wall block of the MBT. To determine the deformation and strain rate accumulation, we have re‐analysed the available GNSS results of the area, which indicate a deformation rate of up to 16 mm/year in the vicinity of the Pasighat region. The GPS‐derived deformation rates are well corroborated with the existing results of peak ground acceleration (PGA) anomalies. The component–wise motion indicates higher fault perpendicular motion in this part, which reveals an accumulation of more strain along the major Himalayan faults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have analysed the geomorphic signatures in aggregation with the geomorphic indices with respect to hinterland and foreland neotectonic variability across the major Himalayan thrust system along the Kali River valley of eastern Kumaun Himalaya. The valley floor morphology in the vicinity of the major thrust gave rise to the accommodation space for the aggradation of the recent fluvial sediments. For a longitudinal distance of 212 km between the South Tibet Detachment (STD) and Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT), the valley has preserved significant aggradational landforms. These landforms have been physically examined to explain the spatial and temporal variability in phases of aggradation/incision in response to the tectonic activity during the late Quaternary. Fossil valleys and associated epigenetic gorges, cut‐and‐fill terraces with thick alluvial cover, debris‐flow terraces, bedrock strath terraces, and alluvial fan terraces are the significant aggradational landforms observed within the valley. They provide signatures of tectonic activity and past climatic records. We have analysed various geomorphic indices, namely, stream‐gradient index (SL), steepness index (Ks), hypsometric curve and index (HI), and asymmetric factor (AF) to map the spatial variability in tectonic processes across the major thrusts. The channel morphology (depth and width) of a river becomes adjusted in geological time because of long‐term tectonic and erosional processes. However, the channel geometry and deviations can be highly adjustable in a tectonically disturbed mountainous region. The deviations along the river course can be attributed to active tectonic movement along thrusts/faults or because of erosion/sedimentation processes. We applied a novel method called the river Gradient Length Anomaly (GLA) for 37 subbasins of the Kali River to deduce active deformation (uplift/subsidence) corresponding to the increased sedimentation and erosional rates, both from the upstream and downstream parts of the thrusted blocks, from where river flows through. The results of basin‐wise morphometric indices were corroborated with GLA anomaly and field observations, which suggests that the area has undergone active deformation between the Main Central Thrust (MCT) and Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT), which is attributed to the regional compression. The results of geomorphic and morphometric data are validated with the focal mechanisms of moderate earthquakes. Rana and Sharma (2017) dispute our tectonic interpretation mainly on the basis of what they believe (climate?). However, we welcome their comments, as this gives us a chance to highlight the ambiguity inherent in discriminating the climate-tectonic imprints in morphotectonic records that are prevalent in current research. We should note that the paper published by Kothyari et al. (2017) was reviewed by national/international reviewers. We would like to emphasize the fact that the paper does not rule out the role of climate. However, most importantly, it presents significant features and observations that collection/assemblage points toward the dominant role of tectonics in their shaping, and not solely climate, as postulated by Rana and Sharma (2017). The objective of this paper is to identify tectonic signatures (geomorphology) in a monsoon - dominated, tectonically active terrain like the North Almora Thrust (NAT). These faults are marked by previous workers based on field evidence such as folding and faulting of lithological units; presence of slickensides parallel to the fault; offset of NAT owing to a transverse fault; and offset of drainage, drainage basin analysis, strath terraces, fluviolacustrine terraces, development of scarp, narrow river course, and deeply incised valleys. However, we disagree with the comments raised by Rana and Sharma (2017), because they are highly skewed toward the climate school of thought, and did not perceive the setting as a collection of landforms. Instead, they attempted to view them in isolation. Because these comments are important, we will try to further our research incorporating issues related to isolation of climate and tectonics imprints in the immediate future. We would like to thank Rana and Sharma (2017) for raising some basic questions on our work as this gave us an excellent opportunity to summarize and present the dominance of various processes and related landforms as earlier reported by Kothyari et al. The landform development and valley floor morphology of active regions is significantly controlled by tectonic processes. In the present study the upper catchments of Kosi and Gagas river valleys have been investigated with special emphasis on aggradational landforms to explain the spatial and temporal variability of aggradation/incision in response to tectonic activity during the late Quaternary and Holocene in Central Kumaun Himalaya. Major tectonic elements such as the North Almora thrust (NAT), Rasiyari fault (RF), and Gagas fault (GF) are considered to be controlling the development of landforms in the region. The valleys have preserved debris flow terraces, bedrock strath terraces, and fluviolacustrine terraces that provide signatures of tectonic activity. Morphostratigraphy of the terraces reveals that the oldest landforms are preserved in the hanging wall block of the NAT, RF, and along the GF. Reconstructions based on morphostratigraphy through the application of optical chronology suggests multiple phases of fluvial aggradation in the upper catchment of the Kosi and Gagas rivers that were initiated around 34 ka. The youngest phase of aggradation is dated to be around early to mid-Holocene (7–1 ka). Based on terrace morphology, four major phases of enhanced uplift have been estimated during 34, 15.8, 7, and 3 ka. The older uplift event dated to be around 34 ka is represented uplift along GF, which accommodated onset of valley-fill aggradation in Gagas valley. The 15.8 ka event represents uplift along RF, which led to the generation of debris flow from adjacent hillslopes. The 7 ka event represents uplift of a hanging wall block of the NAT and deposition of debris flow terraces. However, the youngest 3 ka event represents enhanced uplift, which is responsible for the incision of the older valley fill sediments and bedrock. The present study has been carried out with special emphasis on the aggradational landforms to explain the spatial and temporal variability in phases of aggradation/incision in response to tectonic activity during the late Quaternary in the Saryu River valley in central Kumaun Himalaya. The valley has preserved cut-and-fill terraces with thick alluvial cover, debris flow terraces, and bedrock strath terraces that provide signatures of tectonic activity and climate. Morphostratigraphy of the terraces reveals that the oldest landforms preserved south of the Main Central Thrust, the fluvial modified debris flow terraces, were developed between 30 and 45 ka. The major phase of valley fill is dated between 14 and 22 ka. The youngest phase of aggradation is dated at early and mid-Holocene (9–3 ka). Following this, several phases of accelerated incision/erosion owing to an increase in uplift rate occurred, as evident from the strath terraces. Seven major phases of bedrock incision/uplift have been estimated during 44 ka (3.34 mm/year), 35 ka (1.84 mm/year), 15 ka (0.91 mm/year), 14 ka (0.83 mm/year), 9 ka (1.75 mm/year), 7 ka (5.38 mm/year), and around 3 ka (4.4 mm/year) from the strath terraces near major thrusts. In present study the results of integrated studies of landform development and geomorphic indices of drainage networks across the South Wagad Fault (SWF) zone have been presented. The SWF is a structure that is morphogenic in nature, creating a 40-m-high E–W trending escarpment that extends ~ 80 km at the southern end of the Wagad uplift. The SWF got reactivated during the Bhuj earthquake of 2001, continued aftershock activity of M ≥ 4 levels were recorded in the epicentral zone, north of the Kachchh Mainland Fault and west of the SWF. Strath terraces along the river valleys and the truncation of alluvial fans along the mountain front, incision, and offset of rivers suggests an active nature of the SWF. To assess the relative tectonic activity, morphometric indices such as stream-gradient ( SL ) index, hypsometric integral ( HI ), basin asymmetry ( AF ), mountain front sinuosity ( S mf ) index, sinuosity index ( SI ), and basin shape ( B S ) have been analyzed. The landform development along the river valley in the SWF zone suggests reactivation of the SWF between 12 and 3 ka. The southern front of Wagad is found to be uplifting at the rate of 2.8 mm/y during the last 12 ka as estimated through OSL dates. The relative index of active tectonics (RIAT) by the study of different geomorphic parameters and field checks indicates that most of the Wagad highland is active. The current geodetic investigation is based on nearly a decade of continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) data towards the western part of the Indian Plate (2009–2019). This research focused on the Kachchh Rift Basin (KRB), the seismically most active intra‐plate region of the Indian Plate, which has seen three ≥ M 7.0 earthquakes in the last two centuries. The GPS stations on the northern and southern margins show SSW and NNE directed motion, indicating that the KRB is currently under the influence of regional compressive stress on both flanks and the same is reflected in the form of earthquake activity in the center portion. Furthermore, the existence of intra‐basin stress, in addition to regional stress, increases strain accumulation and results in the creation of a Principal Deformation Zone (PDZ) in the central part of the KRB. The average annual deformation in the middle of KRB remains 1.0 ± 0.5 mm/year, while sites near the South Wagad Fault (SWF) experience 1.2 mm/year of fault parallel motion. The dominant fault normal motion along the flanks with a maximum fault parallel motion in the middle intimates the existence of strike‐slip tectonics in the central Kachchh. The geometric relationship of strike‐slip faults in a compressive margin and strain accumulation in pre‐existing faults (PDZ) is responsible for current strike‐slip and thrust motion in the Kachchh, including the 2001 Bhuj earthquake (M 7.7). Our geodetic model is well‐corroborated with the geological observations of the wrench fault model of strike‐slip faults. PS‐InSAR results in the northern part of the region between Khadir and Bela Islands show ≤6.0 mm of annual LOS displacement. GPS results indicate ≈ 1.3 to 1.4 ± 0.5 mm/year of fault parallel motion along the transverse Ekal Amrapar Fault (EAF). The non‐significant variation in GRACE‐derived TWS values (from 2009 to 2018) rules out non‐tectonic deformation in the vicinity of EAF and thus points to tectonic activity as the cause of the derived deformation in the region. Structural and morphotectonic signatures in conjunction with the geomorphic indices are synthesised to trace the role of transverse tectonic features in shaping the landforms developed along the frontal part of the eastern Arunachal sub-Himalaya. Mountain front sinuosity ( S mf ) index values close to one are indicative of the active nature of the mountain front all along the eastern Arunachal Himalaya, which can be directly attributed to the regional uplift along the Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT). However, the mountain front is significantly sinusoidal around junctions between HFT/MBT (Main Boundary Thrust) and active transverse faults. The high values of stream length gradient ( SL ) and stream steepness ( K s ) indices together with field evidence of fault scarps, offset of terraces, and deflection of streams are markers of neotectonic uplift along the thrusts and transverse faults. This reactivation of transverse faults has given rise to extensional basins leading to widening of the river courses, providing favourable sites for deposition of recent sediments. Tectonic interactions of these transverse faults with the Himalayan longitudinal thrusts (MBT/HFT) have segmented the mountain front marked with varying sinuosity. The net result is that a variety of tectonic landforms recognized along the mountain front can be tracked to the complex interactions among the transverse and longitudinal tectonic elements. Some distinctive examples are: in the eastern extremity of NE Himalaya across the Dibang River valley, the NW-SE trending mountain front is attenuated by the active Mishmi Thrust that has thrust the Mishmi crystalline complex directly over the alluvium of the Brahmaputra plains. The junction of the folded HFT and Mishmi Thrust shows a zone of brecciated and pulverized rocks along which transverse axial planar fracture cleavages exhibit neotectonic activities in a transverse fault zone coinciding with the Dibang River course. Similarly, the transverse faults cut the mountain front along the Sesseri, Siluk, Siku, Siang, Mingo, Sileng, Dikari, and Simen rivers. At some such junctions, landforms associated with the active right-lateral strike-slip faults are superposed over the earlier landforms formed by transverse normal faults. In addition to linear transverse features, we see evidence that the fold-thrust belt of the frontal part of the Arunachal Himalaya has also been affected by the neotectonically active NW-SE trending major fold known as the Siang antiform that again is aligned transverse to the mountain front. The folding of the HFT and MBT along this antiform has reshaped the landscape developed between its two western and eastern limbs running N-S and NW-SE, respectively. The transverse faults are parallel to the already reported deep-seated transverse seismogenic strike-slip fault. Therefore, a single take home message is that any true manifestation of the neotectonics and seismic hazard assessment in the Himalayan region must take into account the role of transverse tectonics. The study evaluates the impacts of India's COVID-19 lockdown and unlocking periods on the country's ambient air quality. India experienced three strictly enforced lockdowns followed by unlocking periods where economic and social restrictions were gradually lifted. We have examined the in situ and satellite data of NO2 emissions for several Indian cities to assess the impacts of the lockdowns in India. Additionally, we analyzed NO2 data acquired from the Sentinel-5P TROPOMI sensor over a few districts of the Punjab state, as well as the National Capital Region. The comparisons between the in situ and satellite NO2 emissions were performed for the years 2019, 2020 and up to July 2021. Further analysis was conducted on the satellite data to map the NO2 emissions over India during March to July for the years of 2019, 2020 and 2021. Based on the in situ and satellite observations, we observed that the NO2 emissions significantly decreased by 45–55% in the first wave and 30% in the second wave, especially over the Northern Indian cities during the lockdown periods. The improved air quality over India is indicative of reduced pollution in the atmosphere due to the lockdown process, which slowed down the industrial and commercial activities, including the migration of humans from one place to another. Overall, the present study contributes to the understanding of the trends of the ambient air quality over large geographical areas using the Sentinel-5P satellite data and provides valuable information for regulatory bodies to design a better decision support system to improve air quality. We present the results of integrated studies of geomorphic indices of drainage networks and landforms developed across the mountain front along the Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT) between the Dabka and Baur rivers, Kumaun Himalaya. The HFT is a morphogenic structure in nature, creating a 100-m-high E–W trending escarpment that extends ~ 21 km. Geomorphological evidence indicates ~ 10.5 km westward migration of the Dabka River and ~ 5.2 km eastward migration of the Baur River. These migrations are a result of uplift of the hanging wall along the HFT. The HFT is offset by a transverse fault, which suggests that the latter postdates the reactivation of the HFT between 500 and 100 ka. Presence of different levels of strath terraces along the mountain front suggests the active nature of the HFT. To assess the relative tectonic activity, morphometric indices such as stream-gradient ( SL ) index, mountain front sinuosity ( S mf ) index, and ratio of valley floor width to valley height ( Vf ) have been analyzed. Results of the former two are consistent with the tectonic landforms developed in thrust zones. Paleochannels of the Dabka and Baur rivers are characterized by high Vf values while other valleys show low Vf values. Quaternary alluvial sediments have been deformed along the Pawalgarth Thrust, a splay of the HFT. Deformation has resulted in the formation of the Pawalgarh Anticline, a thrust-related asymmetric fold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geomorphic evidences and geochronology suggest recent tectonic activity in the Belt of Schuppen of Dimapur and Peren districts of Nagaland. Multiple levels of strath terraces forming remarkable geomorphic expressions are observed along the Chathe and Jharnapani river valleys. They indicate episodic uplift of the hanging‐wall blocks of the thrust systems. The major lineaments prominently trend parallel to the NE–SW regional thrusts, some being perpendicular or oblique. Active normal faults displacing bedrock and overlying fill sediments point to recent tectonic activity. The parallel and trellis drainage patterns are lineament‐controlled. Uplift of the terrain is evident from successive palaeochannels of the Chathe River younging towards the southwest. Three major aggradational phases of the terrace sediments are inferred from optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) chronology, the oldest beginning around 21 ka, the second around 11–7 ka, and the youngest between 3.5 and 1 ka. A sand lens of a tilted strath terrace exposed between Kukidolong and Chumukedima is dated at 7 ka, indicating tectonic events after 7 ka. Five major phases of bedrock uplift/incision have been estimated during 20 ka (0.13 mm/year), 11 ka (0.92 mm/year), 9 ka (2.29 mm/year), 6 ka (0.67 mm/year), and 1.8 ka (2.6 mm/year). Transverse topographic symmetry and asymmetry factor data suggest tilting towards the NE and SW. Other morphometric indices, such as channel sinuosity, stream length gradient index, valley floor to valley height ratio, and mountain front sinuosity, suggest that the area is tectonically active, which corroborates field observations. The Sabarmati River basin, Gujarat State, western India is one of the major river basins of Gujarat State, playing host to major cities such as Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, both of which are important economic and political capitals of Gujarat State. In the study reported here, we collected available information on the Sabarmati River basin, Gujarat State in terms of geology, tectonics, seismicity, and shear-wave velocity and assimilated and integrated this information into a geographical information system (GIS) platform to generate a rapid first-order seismic hazard map of the area. The integration of different criteria, such as peak ground acceleration, amplification factor, geology and geomorphology, liquefaction, and seismotectonics critical to seismic hazard, was performed following pair-wise comparison using the analytical hierarchy process, wherein each thematic map was assigned a weight on a 1 to 5 scale depending on its contribution to the seismic hazard. Seismic hazard was evaluated using a numerical rating scheme with the help of the GIS. Analysis of the generated map revealed that the seismic hazard is highest in the southeastern part of the area, moderate in the central part, and lowest in the northeastern part comprising the Aravalli Range. The seismic hazard map also shows that almost 40% of the study area, namely that comprising basins of the Sabarmati River and its tributaries, is prone to high seismic hazard. Our results show that it is possible to generate a macro-level seismic hazard map by integrating available information and that this map is a useful tool for urban planners and helps in zeroing in on the areas where seismic microzonation or site-specific studies are required.
