This document contains deliverable D6 Registration of IGSNs for an exemplary subset of Geo-Bio samples of the project FAIR Workflows to establish IGSN for Samples in the Helmholtz Association (FAIR WISH) funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC). This document contains deliverable D5 Mapping of database metadata to machine readable IGSN metadata (Use Case Hereon) of the project FAIR Workflows to establish IGSN for Samples in the Helmholtz Association (FAIR WISH) funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC). Deliverable D5 is part of work package 6 IGSN registration workflows for biogeochemical sample databases. This document describes the deliverable D3 “Assisting and Assessing User application of the FAIR SAMPLES Template” of the project FAIR Workflows to establish IGSN for Samples in the Helmholtz Association (FAIR WISH) funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC). Deliverable D3 is part of work package 3 “Domain-specific metadata for terrestrial and aquatic Geo-Bio samples (vegetation, sediment, water, rocks)”. In D2 we provided an exemplary standardised, flexible and customisable metadata template for Geo-Bio samples (in short ‘FAIR SAMPLES Template’) for batch uploading sample-metadata to the IGSN server. D3 includes a video tutorial with complementary visual and audio content on how to use the ‘FAIR SAMPLES Template’. D3 also contains a Usability questionnaire for receiving feedback on the application of the template. The feedback based on these Usability questionnaires and more future activities such as one-to-one interviews will form the main feedback for evaluating the usability of the FAIR SAMPLES Template and improve its applicability.

Physical samples or specimen are often at the beginning of the “research chain” as they are the source for many data described in scholarly literature. The International Generic Sample Number (IGSN) is a globally unique and persistent identifier (PID) for physical samples and collections with discovery function in the internet. IGSNs enable to directly link data and publications with samples they originate from and thus close the last gap in the full provenance of research results. The modular IGSN metadata schema has a small number of mandatory and recommended metadata elements that can be individually extended with discipline-specific elements. Based on three use cases that represent all states of digitisation - from individual scientists, collecting sample descriptions in their field books to digital sample management systems fed by an app that is used in the field - FAIR WISH will (1) develop standardised and discipline specific IGSN metadata schemes for different sample types from the Earth and Environment Sciences, (2) develop workflows to generate machine-readable IGSN metadata from different states of digitisation, (3) develop workflows to automatically register IGSNs and (4) prepare the resulting workflows for further use in the Earth Science community. "FAIR WISH - FAIR Workflows to establish IGSN for Samples in the Helmholtz Association" is a pilot project of the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration, funded by the Helmholtz Association. This presentation was presented during the HMC Connference on 5th October 2022.

This document describes the deliverable D2 “Exemplary standardised metadata templates for Geo-Bio samples (vegetation, water, sediment, rock samples) for all use cases” of the project FAIR Workflows to establish IGSN for Samples in the Helmholtz Association (FAIR WISH) funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC). Deliverable D2 is part of work package 3 “Domain-specific metadata for terrestrial and aquatic Geo-Bio samples (vegetation, sediment, water, rocks)”. The template presents the suggested metadata elements for sample descriptions of different sample types relevant in the FAIR WISH context and shall serve as the basis for batch uploading sample-metadata to the IGSN server. The modular template was developed as an all-in-one solution for the varying use cases, with the ability for users to select only the variables needed for their specific sample type. This template can already serve for the description of individual samples and will be further developed for hierarchical sample structures later during the project (i.e. vegetation plot > soil pit > soil horizon > soil sample).

This document contains deliverable D1 List of identified linked open data vocabularies to be included in IGSN metadata of the project FAIR Workflows to establish IGSN for Samples in the Helmholtz Association (FAIR WISH) funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC). Deliverable D1 is part of work package 2 Identification and integration of linked open data vocabularies to be included in disciplinary metadata. Linked open data vocabularies allow for a concise and unambiguous language to describe samples in machine-actionable and interoperable form. They also ensure the possibility of interlinking and comparing samples for which similar or the same terms are used. Global warming allows arctic vegetation, which is mainly limited by temperatures, to move north. A change from tundra to taiga will cause a decrease of albedo which further fuels the warming through positive feedback mechanisms. This raises several questions of which we want to address here: (1) Will trees move northwards and thereby change vast treeless tundra areas to taiga? (2) And if so, how long does this response lags behind the temperature changes? To answer these questions we built an individual-based and spatially-explicit vegetation simulator model for larches in Siberia (LAVESI). We present the parameterization and validation of the model's incorporated processes which describe the full life-cycle of the simulated larch species Larix gmelinii. Furthermore, we share results of the first regional-scale simulations testing the model's performance at the Taymyr Peninsula, Russia, ranging from 64-80° N and 92-120° E. In a second experiment, we tested the influence of up to 6 °C warmer and cooler climates on simulated populations. Our results show that already the recent temperature rise will allow forests to expand farther north by roughly one degree, when no seed limitation hinders populations to migrate. Furthermore, climate warming caused populations to densify but with a time-lag of decades. We conclude that in the near future expanding taiga after its first establishment in the former tundra will rapidly form dense tree stands, thus ultimatively fueling the feedback loop of global warming. We show that simulation results of the newly-build vegetation model were reliable, and hence the model can be used as a tool to improve our knowledge about individual-based processes that are important to understand past and future treeline migration.
