The article presents information on the National Federation of Abstracting and Information Services (NFAIS) conference. Kurt Moihoim of the U.S. Defense Technical Information Center was program chairman and is the president of NFAIS. The true challenge of a changing information environment is not to cloud people's vision with old paradigms that inhibit the exploitation of information technology's vast potential. Barbara Lawrence of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics presented an articulate paper on the future challanges for database publishers. Speaker Karen Hunter listed five areas of concern for publishers: research and education; fee structure; maintenance features; copyright and licensing; and added value. Secondary publishers are seen as complementary, not competing, with different services to be delivered to the market. The lecture by Monty Hyams, founder and life president of Derwent Publications Ltd. reviewed the history and brought the audience up-to-date on the progress of patent activities by the governmental patent offices of the world, the not-for-profit secondary services such as Chemical Abstracts, and the for-profits such as Derwent.
