The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of the online data collection method to survey adolescents about their psychological characteristics in a follow up-longitudinal study on positive youth development in order to test the psychometric equivalence of two assessment methods. 1030 participants (17-19 years old) completed paper-and-pencil questionnaires in schools (505 boys and 525 girls), 132 (28 boys and 104 girls) completed Internet-based questionnaires, and 47 (15 boys 32 girls) completed both, measuring positive development indicators. The findings suggest that adolescents report less socially desirable behaviour and active citizenship in Internet-based questionnaires, but generally Internet-based administration does not have any differences in the means values of positive development indicators as compared to paper-and-pencil administration. Internet-based questionnaires have higher or similar internal consistencies as compared with paper-and-pencil questionnaires and are highly correlated with each other when administered using Internet-based and paper-and-pencil assessment. There is no interaction effect of the Internet versus paper-and-pencil assessment and the sex of adolescents on the positive development indicators. Limitations of this study are discussed. This study examined the effects of an expressive writing intervention on male, juvenile offenders' (n=25) psychological and emotional wellbeing. Using a quasi- experimental design, participants were assigned to one of three writing conditions and were instructed to write for 15 minutes for five consecutive days about one of the following topics: theirfuture life goals, things in their ilfe for which they wished to express gratitude, or their plans for the following day. Baseline and post- intervention measures Of life satisfaction, optimism, and mood were completed by youth in all writing conditions. The results revealed that improvements in optimism and mood scores occurred in all writing groups, but no group exhibited significant change on the ilfe satisfaction measure. A qualitative analysis of the youth's daily written entries (n=102) was conducted and revealed the presence of several dominant themes in the youth's writings. The themes, and their relevance for staff working with youth residing in a group home setting, are discussed. Thefindingsfrom this study suggest that expressive writing techniques hold promise for correctional staff and educators seeking affordable means of improving adolescents' level of optimism and positive mood. Future research could examine whether improvements in hopefulness and mood might lead to positive changes on other psychological measures, and perhaps, even on behavioral outcomes, such as academic performance. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), behavior problems, and resilience among adolescents in Southern Thailand, with a particular focus on the role of resilience in mediating the relationship between ACEs and behavior problems. Materials and Methods: A paper-and-pencil questionnaire, covering participants' general information, Thai Version of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACEs questionnaire), Adolescent Risk Behavior Inventory-12 Items, and Thai Version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (25-Item CD-RISC), was distributed to 383 senior high school students in a province in Southern Thailand. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and path analysis. Results: Out of the 383 students the questionnaire was distributed to, 374 completed the questionnaire, resulting in a response rate of 97.65%. Alarmingly, 59.36% of the respondents reported experiencing at least one type of ACE. Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive association between ACEs and behavior problems (r = 0.17, p < 0.01) and a negative correlation with resilience (r = -0.19, p < 0.01). Path analysis demonstrated that ACEs directly influenced behavior problems (β = 0.23, p < 0.01) and resilience (β = -0.24, p < 0.01). However, the analysis did not support the hypothesis that resilience mediates the relationship between ACEs and behavior problems. Conclusion: The findings indicate a troubling prevalence of ACEs among senior high school students in Thailand, likely contributing to current adolescent behavior problems. Although the study's path analysis did not align with prior research, it emphasizes the critical role of resilience in mitigating the adverse effects of ACEs. Globally, adolescents and young adults are calling for action from governments on global humanitarian crises, taking on leadership roles that have contributed to redefining leadership in terms of behavior and action rather than qualities and status. However, there is a significant gap with regard to the conceptual and theoretical understanding of how adolescents and young adults experience leadership. In this paper, we present the results of two qualitative studies that examined the phenomenon of leadership among adolescents and young adults. Study 1 involved interviews with young adult leaders to analyze the fit between traditional leadership theories and their experience of leadership. Following this, Study 2 utilized the results from Study 1 to design a diary study of adolescents attending a leadership program. Both studies revealed that leadership is experienced as a pathway that involves three mechanisms of transferability: sensemaking, action and reflection. The findings of the studies are contrasted with traditional models of leadership that underrepresent the developmental nature of leadership and the transferability of leadership skills across different environments. China's 5000-year-old cultural history and artistic characteristics are integrated into the ecological field of the international environment. Research Purpose. The international spread of Chinese literature also has a certain impact on the physical and mental health of teenagers. This paper studies and discusses the impact of international communication of Chinese literature on teenagers' physical and mental health in the digital humanistic environment. Under the development environment of Digital Humanities in China, the impact of Chinese literature on the healthy psychology of teenagers, the impact content, and the characteristics of each were evaluated. Through the comparison of physical and mental health growth of adolescents in different ages, the characteristics of physical and mental health of adolescents are explored. The coupling degree of physical and mental health of adolescents in different development environments is compared and analyzed. Research Results. Through the research, it is found that with the development of Digital Humanities, the spread of Chinese literature with internationalization has a positive impact on the physical and mental health and psychological quality construction of teenagers and plays a promoting role in promoting mental health, increasing personal quality, and improving teenagers' correct values. The various ideological and moral qualities of Chinese literature can play a greater role in helping and growing up the physical and mental health education of young people in the new era and are also the literary value of promoting the quality education of the next generation of young people in the world. As the atmosphere of domestic animation is getting stronger and stronger in recent years, its proportion in the process of public aesthetics, entertainment, and consumption is increasing; thus, the relationship between the audience and works has become an important academic focus. The theatrical animation in the animation industry has become the category that needs to be focused on and changed in the development process of domestic animation because of its characteristics of receiving attention from all-age audiences. Because of the diversified audience levels faced by theatrical animation, it is particularly difficult to coordinate the needs of each audience level, coupled with the long-term influence of Japanese and American animation; the trend of pop culture led by network culture; the inheritance, excavation, and reconstruction of national culture; and other cultural environment and creative thinking intertwined, making the construction of the independence of domestic animation appear more and more difficult. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the theoretical study of the healing elements of Natsume Yojimbo and to analyze the creation of Chinese traditional ink and wash in the creation of our own works. It is concluded that the thematic choices are based on two categories: emotions and dreams, which focus on personal life experience and universal concern for human life. The character construction is divided into three aspects: self-resistance and self-reflection, self-vision and self-actualization, and traumatic experience and self-rescue to explain the complexity and diversity of the characters' growth connotation. The narrative perspective constitutes the perspective from which the issues are viewed. The omniscient perspective allows for the coexistence of complex character relationships and a clear storyline, while the limited perspective reveals certain emotional tendencies. The narrative mode presents the moral of the text with cause-and-effect narrative, embellished group narrative, and dreamlike polyphony narrative. Finally, the article discusses the realistic dilemma of the growth narrative of domestic online animation and tries to put forward feasible development suggestions in response to the problems at this stage. Background: Uganda is ranked 14 out of 54 countries in Africa with the highest level of teenage pregnancy. The teenage pregnancy rate in Kibuku District in 2016 was 35.8%, high above the average rate in Uganda (25%) and also above rural areas in Uganda (27%). Unfortunately, there is limited information on the experiences of seeking antenatal care and delivery among teenagers. This paper explored teenagers’ experiences seeking services at health facilities in the Kibuku district, Eastern Uganda. Methods: This study used a phenomenological design. Data were collected using in-depth interviews with 27 teenagers aged 14-19 years seeking antenatal care (ANC) or those who had delivered. The teenagers were purposively selected to participate in the study. Data collected was thematically and inductively analyzed through coding. Results: The study showed that most teenage mothers knew the importance of seeking ANC and delivery from a health facility. Unfortunately, few sought services early due to some experiences, including financial constraints, support from their caregivers (husbands and parents), medication, and health education. The teenagers were motivated to attend ANC and were treated well by health workers. However, most teenagers did not have the decision-making power to seek care. Conclusion: Teenage mothers knew the importance of seeking ANC and delivery at health facilities. Their experiences with the health facilities also contributed to the health-seeking behavior of the teenagers, including the comfort received by the girls at the facility, the medication administered, how they were treated by the health workers and the availability of utilities. Health and social workers could consider sensitizing teenagers and their caregivers about the delicate nature of their health when pregnant to make personal decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Digital technologies and mobile interventions are possible tools for prevention initiatives to target the substantial social and economic impacts that anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders have on young people. Objective: This paper described the design and development of the Mind your Mate program, a smartphone app and introductory classroom lesson enhancing peer support around the topics of anxiety, depression, and substance use for adolescents. Methods: The development of Mind your Mate was an iterative process conducted in collaboration with adolescents (n=23), experts, school staff, and software developers. The development process consisted of 3 stages: scoping; end-user consultations, including a web-based survey and 2 focus groups with 23 adolescents (mean age 15.9, SD 0.6 years); and app development and beta-testing. Results: This process resulted in a smartphone peer support app and introductory classroom lesson aimed at empowering adolescents to access evidence-based information and tools to better support peers regarding mental health and substance use–related issues. The program contains links to external support services and encourages adolescents to reach out for help if they are concerned about themselves or a friend. Conclusions: The Mind your Mate program was developed in collaboration with a number of key stakeholders in youth mental health, including adolescents. The resulting program has the potential to be taken to scale to aid prevention efforts for youth mental health and substance use. A comparison of Brown's and Taylor and Chiogioji's responses to our review of literature concerning extracurricular activity participation revealed conflicting views on the strengths and weaknesses of the paper. We present counterarguments for their criticisms in this rejoinder. Their critiques and our rejoinder serve to clarify certain points in the paper for the reader. The goal of this paper is to learn more about the nutritional knowledge, attitude, and behavior of teenager trampoline athletes to improve their dietary nutritional levels as well as their sports performance. The questionnaires were designed on athletes' diet nutrition knowledge, and the questionnaire surveys were conducted on the selected teenager trampoline athletes aged 10–17 as the survey object. Dietary nutrition knowledge, attitude, and behavior are significantly correlated with the total score P < 0.05 ; dietary nutrition knowledge and dietary nutrition behavior are significantly correlated P < 0.05 ; dietary nutrition attitude and dietary nutrition behavior are also significantly correlated P < 0.05 ; dietary nutrition knowledge and dietary nutrition attitude are not strongly correlated P > 0.05 . The average score of dietary nutrition knowledge of teenager trampoline athletes is 6.5 ± 1.7 (failing). The nutritional knowledge of teenager trampoline athletes is not systematic and the quality of nutrition information obtained by teenager trampoline athletes is low. The average score of dietary nutrition attitude of teenager trampoline athletes is 7.1 ± 1.8 (good). The average score of dietary nutrition behavior is 13.4 ± 3.1 (moderate). Teenager trampoline athletes mainly rely on coaches, relatives, and friends to obtain nutritional knowledge. Therefore, the correct eating habits need to be strengthened and their dietary nutrition behaviors need to be reasonably monitored. Suggestions will include providing relevant nutrition courses, increasing athletes' awareness of the importance of dietary nutrition, and using professional dietitians for dietary nutrition matching and monitoring. Background: Regular physical activity in children and adolescents promotes not only their physical health but also improves their cognition. Paper and pencil Neurocognitive tests (NCT) are commonly used to assess the various cognitive domains of a person and can be used as simple tests to assess improvements, if any, in the cognitive abilities of growing adolescents who practice regular physical activity. Aim: To study the effect of six months of structured and unstructured physical activity on cognitive functions in adolescents. Materials and Methods: We recruited 439 healthy adolescent volunteers in the age group of 12 to 17 years (boys 250, girls 189) from a residential school (Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Pondicherry). The following paper and pencil neuropsychological cognitive tests were administered: Two Target Letter Cancellation test, Trail Making test A and B, Ruff Figural Fluency test (RFFT). These participants were then divided into Structured Physical Activity (SPA: n=219; boys 117, girls 102) and Unstructured Physical Activity (USPA: n=220; boys 119, girls 101) groups based on age and gender block randomization method. Six-month intervention was successfully completed by 347 participants only (SPA group: n= 136; boys 77, girls 59; USPA group: n = 139; boys 75, girls 64) and the tests were repeated. Statistical Analysis: The data were recorded and statistically analysed by per-protocol analysis method, using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 19. Results: After six months of intervention, both SPA and USPA group participants showed significant improvements in all the tested neurocognitive parameters. On inter-group comparison, participants in SPA group showed significantly better improvements. Conclusion: Physical activity training in adolescents is more beneficial when structured as per WHO guidelines, probably due to higher cognitive loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, the author has commented on juvenile delinquency. The purpose of this note is to call attention to a serious oversight in this study, an oversight which has undoubtedly arisen because equal sized groups of delinquents and non-delinquents were studied and comparisons made between percentages of these groups. Non-delinquents are considerably more frequent in the general population than are delinquents. These actual frequencies must be taken into account in evaluating the predictive efficiency of the scoring plan reported. The preparation of prognostic tables for indicating the probability of a child's becoming delinquent, although highly desirable, lies much farther in the future.

While the Biodex Balance System (BBS) proved to be a reliable apparatus for testing balance, there is lacking evidence on the number of familiarization trials the subject must undergo before being tested, especially when lower stability levels are used on the BBS. The goal of this study was to determine after how many attempts the result of the balance test on the BBS stabilize. The sample consisted of 66 boys (13.42±0.50 years old) and 57 girls (13.39±0.49 years old) not active in sports. The subjects underwent the Postural Stability Test three times and the Overall Stability Index variable of the BBS was examined. In the analysis the results were separately examined for boys and girls using the t-test. Significant differences were found in all three measurements for boys while for girls there was no significant difference between the second and third measurement. The results of this study indicate that, for boys of this age, the results did not stabilize through the three trials conducted which could mean a need for more than three attempts so the negative effects of familiarization could be avoided. For girls it seems that the result stabilized at the second trial which could indicate that only one trial is needed for them to familiarize themselves with the test. These findings can be important for future studies with a similar female sample to save time and conduct just one test trial before the actual testing, since testing balance on the BBS requires a significant amount of time. Cybergossip is the act of two or more people making evaluative comments via digital devices about somebody who is not present. This cyberbehavior affects the social group in which it occurs and can either promote or hinder peer relationships. Scientific studies that assess the nature of this emerging and interactive behavior in the virtual world are limited. Some research on traditional gossip has identified it as an inherent and defining element of indirect relational aggression. This paper adopts and argues for a wider definition of gossip that includes positive comments and motivations. This work also suggests that cybergossip has to be measured independently from traditional gossip due to key differences when it occurs through ICT. This paper presents the Colombian and Spanish validation of the Cybergossip Questionnaire for Adolescents (CGQ-A), involving 3,747 high school students (M = 13.98 years old, SD = 1.69; 48.5% male), of which 1,931 were Colombian and 1,816 were Spanish. Test models derived from item response theory, confirmatory factor analysis, content validation, and multi-group analysis were run on the full sample and subsamples for each country and both genders. The obtained optimal fit and psychometric properties confirm the robustness and suitability of a one-dimensional structure for the cybergossip instrument. The multi-group analysis shows that the cybergossip construct is understood similarly in both countries and between girls and boys. The composite reliability ratifies convergent and divergent validity of the scale. Descriptive results show that Colombian adolescents gossip less than their Spanish counterparts and that boys and girls use cybergossip to the same extent. As a conclusion, this study confirmes the relationship between cybergossip and cyberbullying, but it also supports a focus on positive cybergossip in psychoeducational interventions to build positive virtual relationships and prevent risky cyberbehaviors. With the rapid development of big data, big data research in the security protection industry has been increasingly regarded as a hot spot. This article mainly aims at solving the problem of predicting the tendency of juvenile delinquency based on the experimental data of juvenile blindly following psychological crime. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a rough ant colony classification algorithm, referred to as RoughAC, which first uses the concept of upper and lower approximate sets in rough sets to determine the degree of membership. In addition, in the ant colony algorithm, we use the membership value to update the pheromone. Experiments show that the algorithm can not only solve the premature convergence problem caused by stagnation near the local optimal solution but also solve the continuous domain and combinatorial optimization problems and achieve better classification results. Moreover, the algorithm has a good effect on predicting classification and can provide guidance for predicting the tendency of juvenile delinquency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Various international laws and guidelines stress the importance of respecting the developing autonomy of children and involving minors in decision-making regarding treatment and research participation. However, no universal agreement exists as to at what age minors should be deemed decision-making competent. Minors of the same age may show different levels of maturity. In addition, patients deemed rational conversation-partners as a child can suddenly become noncompliant as an adolescent. Age, context and development all play a role in decision-making competence. In this article we adopt a perspective on competence that specifically focuses on the impact of brain development on the child's decision-making process.Main Body: We believe that the discussion on decision-making competence of minors can greatly benefit from a multidisciplinary approach. We adopted such an approach in order to contribute to the understanding on how to deal with children in decision-making situations. Evidence emerging from neuroscience research concerning the developing brain structures in minors is combined with insights from various other fields, such as psychology, decision-making science and ethics. Four capacities have been described that are required for (medical) decision-making: (1) communicating a choice; (2) understanding; (3) reasoning; and (4) appreciation. Each capacity is related to a number of specific skills and abilities that need to be sufficiently developed to support the capacity. Based on this approach it can be concluded that at the age of 12 children can have the capacity to be decision-making competent. However, this age coincides with the onset of adolescence. Early development of the brain's reward system combined with late development of the control system diminishes decision-making competence in adolescents in specific contexts. We conclude that even adolescents possessing capacities required for decision-making, may need support of facilitating environmental factors.Conclusion: This paper intends to offer insight in neuroscientific mechanisms underlying the medical decision-making capacities in minors and to stimulate practices for optimal involvement of minors. Developing minors become increasingly capable of decision-making, but the neurobiological development in adolescence affects competence in specific contexts. Purpose Considering that retailers view impulse buying as an important component of their business (around 75 per cent of the purchases are unplanned) and considering also that teens often do some shopping in autonomy and represent an important financial power, the purpose of this paper is to fill the lack of studies concerning adolescent consumers impulse shopping behaviours. This paper investigates the relationships between the positive (prestige sensitivity, price quality schema) and the negative (price consciousness, value consciousness, price mavenism, sales proneness) role of price in teens’ impulse buyings.Design/methodology/approach The test of the hypotheses has been achieved on a sample of 325 French teens (age between 14 and 18) using MANOVA. Previously, respondents were split in two groups which are impulsive buyers and non-impulsive buyers.Findings Findings show clearly differences between teens’ impulsive buyings and teens’ non-impulsive buyings. Teens’ as impulsive buyers possess more prestige sensitivity, price-quality schema, price mavenism, sale proneness and less price consciousness and value consciousness than non-impulsive buyers. Moreover, females adolescents are more inclined to be impulsive buyers than males adolescents.Originality/value Not only it is one of the rare studies that investigates on teens’ impulsive buying but above all, it is the only study that takes into consideration the role of price perception, while a price has to be paid in order to buy. Background/Aim: The objective of the paper was to develop a comprehensive "Adolescence Stress Scale" and to examine different psychometric issues in the development, initial validation, and standardization of this scale. Method: Exploratory factor analysis was conducted on the data procured from a sample of 634 (11–18 years) school-going adolescents in India. Results: An exploratory analysis provided a 10 factor structure, namely, major loss induced stress, enforcement or conflict induced stress, phobic stress, interpersonal conflict induced stress, punishment induced stress, illness and injury induced stress, performance stress, imposition induced stress, insecurity induced stress, unhealthy environment induced stress. The 10 oblique factor solutions are found to be interrelated and interdependent with good indices of internal consistency, and content validity. Conclusions: This scale development is a novel and powerful measure that taps onto various aspects of stress experienced by school-going adolescents. The scale can facilitate researchers, clinicians, and teachers to identify and quantify the significant sources of stress in adolescents in school, or clinic settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper explores the conceptual limitations of the bully discourses that ground UK anti-bullying policy frameworks and psychological research literatures on school bullying, suggesting they largely ignore gender, (hetero)sexuality and the social, cultural and subjective dynamics of conflict and aggression among teen-aged girls. To explore the limitations of bully discourses in practice, the paper draws on a pilot, interview-based study of girls' experiences of aggression and bullying, illustrating how friendships and conflicts among the girls are thoroughly heterosexualized, en-cultured and classed. Drawing on girls and parent interview narratives, I also trace some of the effects of bully discourses set in motion in schools to intervene into conflicts among girls. I suggest these practices miss the complexity of the dynamics at play among girls and also neglect the power relations of parenting, ethnicity, class and school choice, which can inform how, why and when bullying discourses are mobilized. Objective The puberty and adolescence period is very important for adolescents with High-Functioning Autism (HFA). They require more education than their peers to understand the puberty period and the its associated changes. Parents' lack of knowledge of how to deal with adolescents correctly, lack of social skills and failure to provide adequate information to them can create a variety of problems such as behavioral problems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a behavioral management and social skills training program on behavioral and adaptive problems of male adolescent with HFA. Materials & Methods The present study is a single-case study with ABA design. The statistical population consisted of male school students with HFA in Yazd, Iran. Of these, 3 were selected using purposive sampling method. By reviewing various papers related to behavioral problems, cognitive-behavioral approaches, Intervention Guide for Behavioral and Emotional Issues (IGBEI) and Intervention Guide of Social Skills Improvement System (IGSSIS), a program was developed for adolescents and their mothers. To evaluate the content validity of the program and to measure its reliability, Lawshe's method and Kappa coefficient were used, respectively. The program was presented in 37 sessions to the subjects and mothers. To collect data, the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC-3, parent and teacher rating scales) questionnaires was used and completed before and after the intervention. The collected data were analyzed using visual analysis indices and descriptive statistics. Results Raw data were first obtained for each participant in three phases of baseline, intervention, and follow-up and presented in the form of charts. Then, the stability and trend were plotted for all three participants at the baseline and intervention phases. Finally, using intra-situ and inter-situ analyses, the effectiveness of the educational program was evaluated. The results showed that the educational program was effective in reducing behavioral problems with Percent Non-Overlapping Data (PND) of 62.5% for the first and third subjects and 75% for the second subject, and increasing adaptive skills with a PND of 75% for the first and third subjects, and 87% for the second subject. Conclusion Maternal and adolescent education based on an organized program can play an important role in reducing behavioral problems and enhancing adaptive skills during adolescence. Adolescents with HFA need more education to provide appropriate behavior due to the limitations; therefore, it is necessary to develop educational programs for this groups. One of the limitations of this study was the small size of samples; hence, generalization of results should be done with caution. Although many studies have been conducted in relation to children with HFA, further studies are recommended on these adolescents (male and female) in relation to their problems. In working against media representations of the young as a mindless and violent cabal this paper focuses on young people as victims of harassment and fear. While this reality has been recognised for some time it is clear that the victimhood of young people remains largely absent from public debates. As such it is argued that a process of felon setting against youth reflects the more common positioning of youth by society and the state as feared, out of control, and in need of regulation. The aim of this paper is to illustrate how the production and regulation of young people's space is central to the persistence of this paradox, and reinforced by the continued emphasis on young people as offenders in the policy arena. The paper also draws out the geographies of risk for young people, arguing that dualisms and distinctions between victim/offender, feared/fearful, public/private, and safe/dangerous spaces need to be dismantled, if the complex and multiple position of young people in relation to fear of crime is to be acknowledged and addressed. The main goal of this review is to summarise the findings in research articles about the socio-emotional dimension in education in Colombia between the years 2015 and 2021 published in high impact databases such as Scopus, Dialnet, Science Direct and Redalyc. Seventy-eight papers were reviewed. It was highlighted that most studies focused on the emotional education and the development of socio-emotional skills in age groups such as children, adolescents, youth, and adults, with a greater number of works on children and adolescents. The development of some interesting intervention proposals is emphasised, although they do not contribute to innovative theoretical models. It concludes that there is a high level of complexity in this field of research and a need to overcome these shortcomings in order to develop new theories that will promote novel methods and strategies to be applied. Youth sexuality has been primarily studied with a focus on its potential public health issues, such as sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies, and its comorbidity with other risky behaviors. More recently, it has been studied as a normative step in romantic partnerships, either pre- or post-marital, as well as outside the context of romantic involvement. In this paper, we review the extensive literature on sexuality in adolescence and early adulthood both within and outside romantic relationships (i.e., casual sexual relationships and experiences; CSREs). Furthermore, the recent recognition of youth sexuality as a developmental task has led to a renewed interest from scholars in youth who abstain from sexual encounters, whether deliberately or not. A brief overview of the literature on cultural differences in sexuality, and sexual-minority youth sexual development is also provided. Bullying victimization has been recognized as a risk factor for social, physical, and psychological problems in adolescence. One promising resource that seems to protect adolescents from adversity and traumatic events is gratitude. However, no analysis of the specific role of gratitude in bullying context has been performed as yet. Thus, the aim of this research was to explore the associations between bullying victimization, gratitude and suicide risk (i.e., depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts and behaviors) and gender-based differences. We also investigated whether levels of gratitude moderated the relationship between victimization and suicide risk for girls and boys. A convenience sample of 1,617 adolescents (50.5% girls; M age = 14.02) participated in this research. Adolescents completed a paper-and-pencil questionnaire about their bullying victimization, gratitude, depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Gratitude was found to be negatively related to victimization and suicide risk. While no gender differences were found in gratitude, it was observed that girls reported higher levels of suicide risk. However, the victimization × gratitude interaction contributed to variance in suicide risk, but only for girls: Those girls who were victims of bullying with high gratitude scores reported lower suicide risk than their counterparts who showed less gratitude. Thus, the findings from this present cross-sectional study suggest that gratitude is related to suicide risk in the context of bullying victimization, especially among adolescent girls. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of our novel contributions to the understanding of gratitude as a protective factor against consequences of bullying victimization are discussed. In this paper we conduct a within-subjects experiment in which teenagers go over 256 gambles with real money gains and losses. For each risky gamble they choose whether to participate in it, or pass. Prior to this main experiment subjects identify specific songs belonging to their favorite musical genre, as well as songs representing a style they dislike. In the main experiment we vary the music playing in the background, so that each subject hears some of their favorite music, and some disliked music, alternating in blocks of 16 gambles. We find that favorite music increases risk-taking (‘risk on’), and disliked music suppresses risk-taking (‘risk off’), compared to a baseline of no music. Literature in psychology proposes several mechanisms by which mood affects risk-taking, but none of them fully explain the results in our setting. The results are, however, consistent with the economics notion of preference complementarity, extended to the domain of risk preference. The preference structure implied by our results is more complex than previously thought, yet realistic, and consistent with recent theoretical models. In this paper, we empirically examine the ID fraud problem in online game. We analyzed over 260,000 users' behavior using terabytes of big data. The results of the econometrics analysis showed that the behavior pattern of group around 40 years old was very similar to that of teenagers. Considering that the game used for the analysis is a game for young users, this means that some of the users in the group around 40 years old may be teenagers who have stolen the parent's ID. In addition, we performed discriminant analysis and log traffic analysis to estimate how many young users were using their parent IDs. As a result, about 47% of the users around 40 years old were found to be teenager users. Also, behavior patterns of users who are estimated to be teenagers have been found in other age groups. Background: Eating disorders are associated with the highest rates of morbidity and mortality of any mental disorders among adolescents. The failure to recognize their early signs can compromise a patient's recovery and long-term prognosis. Tooth erosion has been reported as an oral manifestation that might help in the early detection of eating disorders. Objectives: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to search for scientific evidence regarding the following clinical question: Do eating disorders increase the risk of tooth erosion? Methods: An electronic search addressing eating disorders and tooth erosion was conducted in eight databases. Two independent reviewers selected studies, abstracted information and assessed its quality. Data were abstracted for meta-analysis comparing tooth erosion in control patients (without eating disorders) vs. patients with eating disorders; and patients with eating disorder risk behavior vs. patients without such risk behavior. Combined odds ratios (ORs) and a 95% confidence interval (CI) were obtained. Results: Twenty-three papers were included in the qualitative synthesis and assessed by a modified version of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Fourteen papers were included in the meta-analysis. Patients with eating disorders had more risk of tooth erosion (OR = 12.4, 95%CI = 4.1–37.5). Patients with eating disorders who self-induced vomiting had more risk of tooth erosion than those patients who did not self-induce vomiting (OR = 19.6, 95%CI = 5.6–68.8). Patients with risk behavior of eating disorder had more risk of tooth erosion than patients without such risk behavior (Summary OR = 11.6, 95%CI = 3.2–41.7). Conclusion: The scientific evidence suggests a causal relationship between tooth erosion and eating disorders and purging practices. This paper addresses various facets of psychological changes observed in adolescence when they are propelled into a dangerous or uncertain situation. Based on Freud's tripartite structure of Ego psychology, the characters are studied concerning their age and other external factors. It also shows the dynamics of the Id, Ego and Superego in three adolescent characters in the novel The Prince of Mist (1993) written by the Spanish novelist Carlos Ruiz Zafon and translated into English by Lucia Graves. The plot is set during the Second World War and the young protagonist Max, his sister Alicia and their friend Roland are stuck in a ballgame unknown to them. While trying to unravel the mystery they face their greatest villain, their fears. These characters witness a series of ill-fated events that forces them to be on edge. The conflict between their moral and realistic visions results in impulsive actions which are examined using the three structures proposed by Sigmund Freud i.e., Id, Ego, and Superego. We begin this special issue by providing a glimpse into the career of Dr. Lindon J. Eaves, from the perspectives of a student, postdoc, instructor, assistant to associate and full professor over the last 20 odd years. We focus primarily on Lindon's contributions to methodological issues and research designs to address them, in particular those related to models for extended twin-family designs, for the development of adolescent behavior, for genotype-environment covariation and interaction, and their application to the Virginia 30,000 and the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioral Development. Adolescence is an age of transition when most brain structures undergo drastic modifications, becoming progressively more interconnected and undergoing several changes from a metabolic and structural viewpoint. In the present study, three MR techniques are used in rats to investigate how metabolites, structures and patterns of connectivity do change. We focused in particular on areas belonging to the limbic system, across three post-weaning developmental stages: from "early" (PND 21–25) to "mid" (i.e., a juvenile transition, PND 28–32) and then to "late" (i.e., the adolescent transition, PND 35–39). The rs-fMRI data, with comparison between early and mid (juvenile transition) age-stage rats, highlights patterns of enhanced connectivity from both Striata to both Hippocampi and from there to (left-sided) Nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and Orbitofrontal Cortex (OFC). Also, during this week there is a maturation of pathways from right Striatum to ipsilateral NAcc, from right OFC to ipsilateral NAcc and vice versa, from left Prefrontal Cortex to ipsilateral OFC and eventually from left Striatum, NAcc and Prefrontal Cortex to contralateral OFC. After only 1 week, in late age-stage rats entering into adolescence, the first pathway mentioned above keeps on growing while other patterns appear: both NAcc are reached from contralateral Striatum, right Hippocampus from both Amygdalae, and left NAcc -further- from right Hippocampus. It's interesting to notice the fact that, independently from the age when these connections develop, Striata of both hemispheres send axons to both Hippocampi and both NAcc sides, both Hippocampi reach left NAcc and OFC and finally both NAcc sides reach right OFC. Intriguingly, the Striatum only indirectly reaches the OFC by passing through Hippocampus and NAcc. Data obtained with DTI highlight how adolescents' neurite density may be affected within sub-cortical gray matter, especially for NAcc and OFC at "late" age-stage (adolescence). Finally, levels of metabolites were investigated by 1H-MRS in the anterior part of the hippocampus: we put into evidence an increase in myo-inositol during juvenile transition and a taurine reduction plus a total choline increase during adolescent transition. In this paper, the aforementioned pattern guides the formulation of hypotheses concerning the correlation between the establishment of novel brain connections and the emergence of behavioral traits that are typical of adolescence. The prevalence rate of harmful use of cyberspace in the world is constantly increasing. This means that those who are addicted to the Internet, experience negative consequences of it, such as feeling of loneliness and isolation, and a vicious circle as well as a bilateral relationship may be involved. In this paper we studied the relationship between online social network dependency and internet addiction with loneliness in Gonabad adolescents. The statistical population consisted of all adolescents in the range of 13-20 years in Gonabad city. Samples have been selected just among high school students because of the easy accessibility. The participants includes 568 boys and girls students in 9, 10 and 11 grades of high school. Three questionnaires were the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness Scale and researcher-made questionnaire of virtual social network dependency. The results showed that the rate of intense addiction to internet among Gonabadian adolescents (8.8%) is lower compared to the prevalence of internet addiction among Iranian adolescents (10.24%). Also the mean of loneliness is nearly 40 and 16.9% (98 individuals) of the participants have earned scores higher than the mean of loneliness and 83.1% of adolescents had score lower than the mean of loneliness. Data shows that there is very weak direct and significant statistical relationship between internet addiction and loneliness and between virtual social network dependency and loneliness. The results showed that but adolescents did not feel emotional loneliness and severe social isolation despite the dependence on modern media tool is elusive from society and need for privacy (away from other people). The paper deals with the parental control and their influence on the personality dimensions of the adolescent. The aim of the research is to identify correlations between mother's and father's control and personality dimensions of their children (adolescents), and to found clusters of these variables. Personality dimensions were examined using the Big Five model, specifically the NEO FFI questionnaire. The control was examined using a DZSVR questionnaire. On a sample of 346 adolescents, a strong correlation was found between parents' control and all Big Five personality dimensions of adolescents. The personality dimensions extraversion, openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness were in a positive correlation with parents' control while neuroticism was in negative correlation with the control. A hierarchical cluster analysis extracts three groups of personality profiles based on their parents low, high and a discrepant coercive control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extremism and radicalism are nowadays an urgent problem for many countries, irrespective of their political and socio-economic progress. Manifestations of hatred against groups of different races, nationalities, ethnic or religious groups pose a latent threat to any democratic society and can significantly disrupt the stability of society and the national political system. Extremism appears on the one hand as a product of a democratic society, its part, while on the other hand the lack of democracy acts as a driving mechanism for violent extremism, which can then be understood within the framework of one of the forms of risky behaviour. The paper theoretically analyzes radicalization and extremism as risky behaviours, focusing specifically on young people as a group characterized by expanded risky behaviour, a group endangered by extremism. The death of a loved one in adolescence is the most painful experience and is associated with number of emotional, behavioral and psychological problems in adolescents. Adolescence is a period of rapid physical and psychological transition from childhood to adulthood. During this challenging stage of development, if they face trauma of losing a loved one especially a sibling is a great loss for them. Like adults, they also experience negative emotions such as anger, guilt, rejection however they find themselves as incapable of handling those negative feelings. They may manifest their distress in the form of physical symptoms (stomachache, headache), anger outburst, irritability and social isolation. The main aim of this paper is to present a description of three adolescent cases (two males and one female, aged 12 to 15 years) who presented with low mood, ghabrahat (tension/anxiety), headache, irritability, anger outburst, decreased social interaction, guilt feelings and difficulty in sleep subsequent to the death of their sibling. Adolescents with trauma often present with reluctance to open that poses a real challenge for the therapist. This paper elaborates the use of basic counseling skills such as empathy, active listening, unconditional positive regard and acceptance within the therapeutic process to overcome resistance and promote the healing process. The use of various psychological techniques (psycho education, normalization, activity scheduling, exposure, role play, letter writing & cognitive restructuring) to manage grief in adolescents is discussed in the paper. This study examines black adolescents' reports of the most helpful types of social support that they receive from and provide to family members, and whether family support exchanges vary by ethnicity (African American vs. Black Caribbean) and gender. Data for this study are from the National Survey of American Life Adolescent Supplement (NSAL-A), a national, probability sample of African American and Black Caribbean youth (ages 13-17). Overall, youth reported financial support, followed by emotional assistance and practical support as the most helpful types of support that they received. Practical and emotional assistance characterized the most commonly reported types of support that they provided to family members. Black Caribbean adolescents were more likely than African American adolescents to report financial and practical assistance as the most helpful types of support that they received from family members; no ethnic differences were observed in the provision of support to relatives. There were no significant gender differences in the receipt of support, but adolescent girls reported greater involvement in providing emotional support and caregiving than adolescent boys. The results of this paper reveal that African American and Black Caribbean adolescents are involved in a complex pattern of reciprocal support exchanges with their extended family members. Study findings also reinforce the importance of research focused on racial/ethnic and gender differences in family support exchanges in order to develop a more nuanced understanding of family support behaviors within these groups. There is limited understanding of the relationship between physical activity and use of screen-based media, two important behaviors associated with adolescents' health outcomes. To understand this relationship, researchers may need to consider not only physical activity level but also physical activity experience (i.e., affective experience obtained from doing physical activity). Using a sample predominantly consisting of African and Latino American urban adolescents, this study examined the interrelationships between physical activity experience, physical activity level, and use of screen-based media during leisure time. Data collected using self-report, paper and pencil surveys was analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results showed that physical activity experience was positively associated with physical activity level and had a direct negative relationship with use of non-active video games for males and a direct negative relationship with use of computer/Internet for both genders, after controlling for physical activity level. Physical activity level did not have a direct relationship with use of non-active video games or computer/Internet. However, physical activity level had a direct negative association with use of TV/movies. The paper analyzes personality self-determination through the prism of psychological and pedagogical resources and self-development potential of an individual. To examine self-determination parameters, we used: Test of Life Meaning Orientations by D.A. Leontev, Self-Management Ability Test by N.M. Peysakhov, Self-Determination Test by S.I. Kudinov, Self-Realization Questionnaire by S.I. Kudinov. The research has shown that the level of males' and females' self-realization depends on how deep the sense of their life purpose is. Self-management ability, autonomy and self-expression have a positive impact on a personal self-realization. No quantitative studies to date have specifically focused on the risk and protective factors for the educational resilience of socioeconomically disadvantaged adolescents who are not of compulsory school age in South Africa. This study compares the educational delay of 599 black adolescents aged 16 to 18 from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in Western Cape and Mpumalanga to nationally and provincially representative estimates in South Africa. The paper also explores predictors for educational delay by comparing out-of-school adolescents (n = 64), and adolescents who are at least one year behind in school (n = 380), with adolescents in the age-appropriate grade or higher (n = 155). Risk factors for being behind included the following: male gender, past grade repetition, rural location and larger school size. Risk factors for being out of school were the following: past grade repetition, previous concentration problems at school, household poverty, and food insecurity. Protective factors for being in the age-appropriate grade included the following: living with biological caregivers, access to school counselling and attending schools in wealthier communities.
