A study determined which activities in a capstone course were perceived to be the most beneficial to course completers with regard to their first professional position after graduation. It also compared the quality of selected capstone activities to other junior/senior level courses in the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University. A random sample of 214 students--150 registered agriculture studies majors, 38 agricultural education majors, and 26 other majors--completed a questionnaire after taking a departmental capstone class required of all graduating agricultural studies majors. Part One of the questionnaire identified the benefits of the course to the first agricultural position of the completers. A five-point Likert-type scale was used that ranged from one (strongly disagree) to five (strongly agree). Part two contained 10 comparison questions asking respondents to compare selected experiential learning activities from the capstone course with other courses taken. Findings were as follows: respondents felt course activities were beneficial to them in their first professional position; a significant difference was found in the benefits of the capstone course to the respondent's first professional position when grouped by employment area; more recent graduates tended to value the perceived benefits slightly more; and the capstone course provided more or greater than opportunities and interactions than other junior/senior level agricultural courses. In view of continuing trends in farming and the trend toward increasing farm diversification and specialization, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and individual researchers have proposed their own lists of the skills that will be needed by farm management researchers in the future. Because farm management research increasingly entails research in the areas of agricultural production, economics, and management, future farm management researchers need the knowledge, skills, and training necessary to ensure their competence in all three fields. Included among the many areas that must be incorporated into programs to train future farm management researchers are the following: economic principles, intermediate economic theory, accounting, agricultural policy, agricultural finance, agricultural marketing, farm and ranch management, agribusiness management, crop production, soils, plant pathology, animal nutrition, livestock production, and animal breeding. Programs to train future farm management researchers should also include an internship component to allow students to learn working skills and gain first-hand knowledge about the industry. (MN)

In this paper we illustrate the architecture of the °'°Kobi system, which is aimed at supporting students' education in artistic or design activities. We will outline the scientific and methodological foundations of the educational approach aimed at enhancing the artistic conception and the design ideation. The functional requirements and the system architecture for implementing the °'°Kobi system are outlined. Finally, the paper discusses some relevant aspects concerning the system application in a real educational context and briefly reports about its preliminary assessment.

The topic of this lecture is building a base of support for research and development in agriculture. First discussed is some of the history of agriculture education in America, including (1) the Morrill Act, which gave public lands to states for agricultural colleges; (2) the Hatch Act, the purpose of which was to promote investigation, experiment, and dissemination of information on agricultural science, and (3) the Smith-Lever Act, which legislated matching funds for extension work to offer practical demonstrations, publications, and other instruction to the public. For approximately the past 100 years the building of a constituency for research and development in agriculture has progressed very slowly. Few students took agricultural courses at first, even when the American economy was largely rural. To build a constituency, research in agriculture must produce something of value to potential constituents, and the results of research must be communicated to them. Discussed are various methods of disseminating information, including publication or research findings, and participation in meetings of commodity organizations. Questions from the audience concern specific accomplishments of research and development in agriculture, ways in which the quality of life of Ohio farmers has improved, and priority-setting. (CD)

The purpose of the American Association for the Advancement of Agricultural Teaching, as stated in its constitution, is "to promote the teaching of agriculture and to devise ways and means for increasing the efficiency of such instruction in elementary and secondary schools and in colleges and universities." The time is opportune perhaps for discussing what ought to be the immediate policy of the association in putting its purpose into effect. One matter has already been settled. It has been agreed that for the present efforts shall be centered principally upon promoting the teaching of agriculture in the secondary schools, by devising ways and means of making that teaching more efficient. One who has marked the recent multiplication in the number of secondary schools attempting to teach agriculture can not but commend restriction of attention to the important problems which these schools present. Appended are: (1) 1913 summer practicum (home project) work of the University of Minnesota Northwest School of Agriculture, Crookston, Minn; (2) Students' reports on 1912 and 1913 summer practicum work at Crookston, Minn; (3) Use of land by high schools teaching agriculture. This paper presents an outline of our project, in which we develop an observation framework for integrating lecture and contextual learning in the field of crop cultivation. Specifically, we will use multi sensing of learners' activities in classrooms, and contextual learning in fieldwork, farm planting, and farming environments. The motivation for our project is twofold: First, crop cultivation provides a powerful illustration of educational technology. It requires both explicit knowledge (from lectures) and implicit knowledge (from contextual learning outside of class). Second, from a practical viewpoint, the number of Japanese farmers is shrinking due to low income and to aging population. Thus, in order to maintain crop yields, farming skills must be transferred efficiently to novice farm workers. Herein, the major features of our framework will be described. Top industries impacting Ohio and East Central Indiana's economies are: (1) agriculture; (2) manufacturing; (3) IT; and (4) service. Without continuation of agriculture and manufacturing receipts, our people and communities will be unable to afford to critical services throughout our region (Aiman-Smith & Green, 2002, Deryn, 1989, Ditcher, 2001, Gianesi, 1998, Liker, 1997, Lozano, 2009, Minarro-Viseras Baines, & Sweeney, 2005, Ohio Economy, 2016). Collaboration and articulation agreements between Wright State University-Lake Campus (WSU-LC), the State of Ohio and our bordering Indiana counties have ensured local agricultural students will have the opportunity to increase skill sets as necessitated by regulations and agricultural innovations. Manufacturing has an equal, if not greater, need for increased manufacturing skill sets. As a regional college campus in the University System of Ohio, we propose to create a Bachelor Degree in Applied Manufacturing Science (BAMS). The curriculum developed will provide a solid core of foundational coursework complemented by applied technical courses industrial manufacturing disciplines. The technical courses will focus on the practical application of manufacturing knowledge and include the basics of applied mathematics, manufacturing safety, and understanding manufacturing symbols and blueprints. Advanced skills will include mastering basic electrical through automation systems, hydraulics and pneumatics, additive and subtractive manufacturing processes, including CNC mill and lathes, machining, welding and 3D printing. Other coursework will include management theory. A Green school is energy efficient, higher performing school that can be environmentally beneficial. Importance of Green school lies in the environmental friendliness value it upholds. Service learning has emanated out of philosophies of progressiveness and pragmatism. Service learning enables students to grow and learn through active participation in community service activities that are clearly connected to their academic program. (Bringle R.G., 1996) The "Haritha Vidyalayam" Project in Kerala is resonant with the Greening of schools adopted in the western countries in 1990's. The "Swach Bharat Abhiyan" can be entangled to service learning activities and green school projects because it's based on Article 51A. The probable question that shoots out of research is how the green schools are related to the service learning? The critical answer for this is the distant aim that both green school and service learning projects "the welfare of the community." The clubbing of society and the school can bring about a greater good for the environment through sustainable development. The Green school as an extended arm of service learning can cater to the needs of the school, society and each individual human being involved within. This paper elaborates upon the "Haritha Vidyalayam" project and steps to enhance green schooling as part of service learning.

The deployment of enhanced frameworks or systems is a new business paradigm and implies significant change in behavior, process and tools within enterprises. This transformation requires efficient training of the different actors involved (managers, technicians, etc.), so that they are made fully aware of the tools and methodologies envisaged. The aquaSmart project has defined a training programme that has a goal of disseminating, but also transferring, learned knowledge to the aquaculture business stakeholders in accordance with the expected goals and outputs of the project. It has the ambition to foster new skills, knowledge and competences within aquaculture organizations to apply the aquaSmart analytics platform, which is suitable for fish farm production, to enhance production and efficiency in the sector. A systematic sampling of 162 articles appearing in 19 issues of JAE during the even years of the decade of the 1980s was examined to accomplish the study objectives. Eleven journals accounting for 51% of the total citations in JAE were identified as core journals of the agricultural/extension education field. Because journals were cited in JAE more frequently than books, bulletins/reports, dissertations/theses, magazines, or papers/proceedings, they were considered to be the field's most important medium of scholarly communication. The following were the most frequently covered topics: secondary agricultural education (13.5%), youth/youth development (9.7%), experiential learning (9.7%), teaching methods (9.2%), issues related to agricultural instructors (9.2%), adult and postsecondary education (8%), learning theory) (6%), and program development/curriculum (5%). It was recommended that agricultural/extension educators broaden their scope to include other subject matter areas such as extension, international agriculture, special needs, elementary agricultural education, and critical thinking.
