Abstract

An essay is presented on the emergence of American characters. It profiles an entire cast of American characters, archetypes and images that continue to recognize the new world from the old. It avers that the Yankee, who becomes the personification of the nation, is also recognized as Brother Jonathan or Uncle Sam. The author infers that white actor Thomas Dartmouth Rice' borrowed work-song introduces the cheerful black man as an official presentation of the American character.
