This section presents an update on news related to the field of economics as of Spring 2004. In accordance with Article IV, Section 2 of the By-laws of the American Economic Association, President-elect George Akerlof appointed a Nominating Committee for 2006 consisting of Peter Diamond, Chair, Guillermo Calvo, Angus Deaton, Timur Kuran, Ellen McGrattan, Steven Levitt, Suzanne Scotchmer and Robert Shiller. The Bernard Saffran Memorial Endowment for Junior Faculty Development has been established at Swarthmore College. In his mentoring of a generation of young economists, Professor Saffran particularly encouraged junior colleagues to build research collaborations and other professional connections within academia, and to spend sustained time during sabbatical leaves away from the college, in academic, government or private institutions. The 10th Symposium on Finance, Banking, and Insurance will be held at the Universitaet Karlsruhe, December 14-16, 2005. Its principal objective is to encourage further research in the areas of banking, finance and insurance and to strengthen cooperation between theory and practice. The New York State Economics Association will hold its 58th Annual Conference on October 7-8, 2005, at the Ramada Inn Geneva Lakefront Geneva, New York.

This section offers updates on several conferences held in the U.S. on February 1983 which focused on art documentation. Conservators met in May and in September 1982 in the U.S. and addressed a number of areas of concern. The Tenth Annual Meeting of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC), was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from May 26 to 30, 1982 and contained a wealth of information for those interested in book and paper conservation. The 1982 Congress of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, the parent of AIC, was held in Washington, D.C. from September 3 to 9, 1982. Over 700 delegates from around the world attended. Its theme was Science and Technology in the Service of Conservation, and papers focused on the collaboration between conservators and scientists. The Society of American Archivists met in Boston, Massachusetts from October 19 to 22, 2005. Its theme was Only One Among Many: Cooperation and Coordination among Allied Disciplines and Professions.

The article presents the minutes of the first meeting of the 1976 Executive Committee of the American Economic Association held in Washington, D.C. on March 19, 1976. The following members were present: Franco Modigliani (presiding), Carolyn Shaw Bell, Barbara R. Bergmann, George H. Borts, Andrew F. Brimmer, Rendigs Fels, R. A. Gordon, Walter W. Heller, C. Elton Hinshaw, Harry G. Johnson, Lawrence R. Klein, Mark Perlman, Edmund S. Phelps, Alice Rivlin, Paul M. Sweezy, and Burton A. Weisbrod. The Secretary reported that, pursuant to the guideline that normally firm site commitments should not extend beyond five years, he had informed the convention bureaus of the cities now holding space for the 1982 meetings that a decision will probably not be made until 1977. The Treasurer reported that financial statements for 1975 received from the auditors show an operating deficit of $56 thousand, a little less than the anticipated deficit of $62 thousand. The Managing Editor reported that he may have overestimated printing costs in the 1976 budget. He had projected a price increase for paper which has not and may not materialize. The Chairman reported that at present the Association's bylaws provide for the election of a maximum of 25 foreign honorary members.

By vote of the executive committee of the American Sociological Society, the 1951 Annual Meeting will be held in Chicago on September 5, 6, and 7, 1951. This will overlap, on September 5, with the meeting in the same city of the American Psychological Association. The hotel which will serve as headquarters for the annual meeting has not yet been selected. Those who are interested in presenting papers at the 1951 meeting of the American Sociological Society are invited to make known their interest by following the procedure outlined below. The Committee on Contributed Papers will handle submitted papers in one of two ways. If a paper appears to fall in an area covered by one of the sections of the meeting, it will be forwarded to the chairman of that section for his consideration otherwise it will be considered for inclusion in one of the three sessions of this committee. In general, the Committee on Contributed Papers is interested in research reports which can be read in fifteen minutes.

This article presents information on congresses and conventions on various issues held in the U.S. as of December 1916. The Twenty-ninth Annual Meeting of the American Economic Association will be held at Columbus, Ohio, December 27-30, 1916. The American Sociological Society, the American Statistical Association, and the American Association for Labor Legislation will meet at the same time and place. A meeting of the teachers of economics, sociology, and commerce, in the state of Iowa was held at the State University in Iowa City on October 6 and 7, 1916. On Wednesday evening, December 27, there will be a joint meeting of the four associations at which the annual presidents' addresses will be given. The subject for discussion at the Thursday morning session is "The Problem of Land Ownership." researcher Richard T. Ely will read the leading paper. On Thursday afternoon there will be papers by researcher H. C. Taylor on "Two Dimensions of Economic Productivity" and by researcher George von Tungein on "The Results of Some Rural Surveys in Iowa."

This article reports on the proceedings of the forty-fifth annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), held in May 1989, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The four-day Conference consisted of 27 AAPOR paper panels, 5 WAPOR paper panels, 15 roundtables, two plenaries, and one didactic session. Together, these sessions included over 175 different presentations. The tally of all names listed in the program-including session chairpersons, discussants, roundtable panelists, paper givers and coauthors-indicates that 280 different persons contributed to the intellectual content of the conference program in some direct fashion. The two, evening plenary sessions focused on "Perestroika, Glasnost, and Public Opinion in the Soviet Union" and "Newspapers and Television as Election Pollsters: Do They Do Anything Right?" The didactic session was on "Designing Good Graphs." The AAPOR Award for exceptionally distinguished achievement was presented to Herbert E. Krugman.

The article discusses the highlights of the 153rd meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) held in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 4-8, 2007. A total of 683 papers were presented throughout the sessions in the meeting. The tutorial on musical acoustics was given with the Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra. A Student Reception subsidized by the National Council of Acoustical Consultants allowed students to meet ASA members. A student design competition involving a drama theater complex was sponsored by the ASA Technical Committee.

This article provides information on the 2002 annual membership meeting called to order by outgoing American Association for Public Opinion Research president Don Dillman at Saint Pete Beach, Florida in May. Secretary-treasurer Rob Santos reported that the financial status is good. The association has a surplus of $40,000. In the membership committee report, Dawn Nelson reported that the association have 1,378 members. A variety of outreach efforts were made, including sending e-mails and letters and making phone calls to lapsed members. Scott Keeter reported that the Standards Committee was enlarged to include members from each chapter and Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics and Consortium of Social Science Associations representatives. Diane O'Rourke, chair of the Endowment Committee, asked the members present to review the conference program booklet. They show the goals of the endowment, the status of the funds and the names of the members and organizations who have contributed since the inception of the fund in October 2000. Dick Kulta, reported that despite concerns about attendance after September 11, 2001, numbers were fine. He received 332 submissions resulting in 229 papers, 59 sessions, 10 roundtable discussions and 3 poster sessions.

The Electoral College on March 18, 1988, chose Gerard Debreu as nominee for President-elect of the American Economic Association in the balloting to be held in the autumn of 1988. Other nominees (chosen by the 1988 Nominating Committee) are; Vice-President (two to be elected) Alan S. Blinder, Andrew F. Brimmer, Christopher A. Sims, and Oliver E. Williamson; for members of the Executive Committee (two to be elected) William A. Darity Jr., Stanley Fischer, John B. Shoven, and Lawrence H. Summers. The Southern Economic Association will hold its annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, November 20-22, 1988. The second annual meeting of the European Society for Population Economics will be held at the University of Mannheim, Federal Republic of Germany in June 1988. The Department of Economics, University of Illinois at Chicago has received authorization to grant a Ph.D. in Business Economics. The new doctoral degree program is intended to prepare students for research careers in the business community or research/teaching careers in business colleges. Applicants with or without an MBA degree are welcome to apply. The new program complements the department's existing Ph.D. program which emphasizes public policy analysis.

The article focuses on "The Institute of Management Sciences" (TIMS) XIX international meetings that were held in the Southwest U.S. The theme of the meetings "Management Science, Ecology and the Quality of Life" will be developed through five plenary sessions which constitute the TIMS XIX version of the Distinguished Lecture Series, the two luncheon addresses and twenty-one paper sessions. The significance and vast range of topics covered by the theme of this meeting made it advisable to alter past customs. Each of the five plenary sessions will be addressed by a different distinguished lecturer on one or more aspects of the meeting's theme. The two luncheon addresses are also directed to this theme as are many of the papers which have been received for delivery at these meetings. Of course, the responsibilities of an international meeting transcend any one theme and allowance has therefore been made for the inclusion of significant presentations which need not be immediately pertinent to the theme of this meeting. Forty-four additional sessions have been organized.

This article presents the text of a paper about origins and perspectives of the international representative read at the Nineteenth Annual Convention of the American Catholic Sociological Society at the Trinity College in Washington, D. C., on December 28-30, 1957. This paper is a discussion of a conceptual framework which has developed in connection with a study of the role of international representatives as a significant role in the American labor movement. The focus of the present discussion is on the role of international representatives as a non-professional role which is nevertheless capable of professionalization. This paper will further attempt to show that both short-run and long-run conditions affecting the trade union movement generally, and the role of international representatives in particular, require that this role become fully professionalized. The term "international representative" is employed in this discussion to signify the role of those officials who represent the international or national office at the local level. By an international office is meant the central office of a union having locals both in the U.S. and Canada.

The article assess the accomplishments of seven International Congresses of Accountants held to date. The first congress held in 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri sponsored by the Federation of Societies of Public Accountants in the U.S., must be attributed to George Wilkinson, an Illinois certified professional accountant (CPA) who was born in England, but spent his professional life in the U.S. The 1904 Congress was an ambitious event for the American accounting profession. It was held when The American Association of Public Accountants had a membership of only 140 scattered over 15 states, of whom 81 held CPA certificates. The Third International Congress was held in New York City in September 1929. Joseph E. Sterrett and F. van Dien, presidents of the earlier congress, served as Honorary Presidents, while Robert H. Montgomery held the role of President of the 1929 sessions. The 1952 Congress, convened in London, England, included about 80 CPAs from the United States. It exercised a constructive influence on international finance and commerce, and stimulated avid discussion and subsequent research on fluctuating price levels in relation to accounts, accounting requirements for issues of capital, the accountant in industry, the accountant in practice and in public service, and the incidence of taxation.

The article presents the authors reflections on his twenty five years with the American Accounting Association. The author realizes that he was fortunate enough to have attended all the meetings of the Association. The members of the Association have missed many pleasant days at home, have neglected their work, have spent without reimbursement over $2,000 in attending these annual meetings, eleven of which have been on the Atlantic seaboard and six in Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Detroit. The author admits there have been some very dry moments in some of the sessions, when it seemed necessary to exercise a maximum of self discipline. At times they had to seek relief in the hallways or the great out of doors in order to ponder over the serious problems and proposals made by the learned authors of some papers which were read. The truth of the matter is that though the span of years the members have considered the intangible values derived from these meetings as great enough to justify the personal detriments incurred in attending them.

The article presents minutes of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society's (OVSS) Annual Business Meeting to be held on May 1, 1970 in Akron, Ohio. The meeting was called to order by president Dwight G. Dean. The minutes of the last annual business meeting were unanimously approved as circulated. Researcher Don Olmsted reported for the Publications Committee. He reported on the functions of the Publications Committee: acting as an editorial board for the OVSS journal, "Sociological Focus," and conducting the OVSS student paper competition. Names of the winners of the student paper competition were withheld until the annual banquet. Sociologist Kenneth Eckhardt reported for the Membership Committee. He reported that the membership of the OVSS currently stands at 795. Frank Westie reported for the Development Committee. His report indicated that the Council had approved the appointment of student members to standing committees. In addition, he reported that the Development Committee would be circulating questionnaires to the membership of the OVSS concerning actions the Society should take concerning major issues in the larger society.

The article presents information on minutes of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society's council meeting which was held on September 20, 1968 at Pick Congress Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. President William D'Antonio called the meeting to order. The minutes of the last council meeting were approved as corrected. There was discussion of the minutes of the executive committee meeting with the officers of the Midwest Sociological Society. There was discussion of the paper competition. The status of the student when the paper is completed will determine which contest it is entered in. This competition may include honors work and special projects as well as papers for courses. The following motion was made and unanimously passed. The editor of Sociological Focus may set up a special account to handle income and the expense of editing the journal. The editor is to give an accounting of this money to the Publications Committee, and this accounting is to be included in the Publications Committee's report to the council. A membership drive will take place utilizing the state chairmen. Reimbursement of mailing costs to the membership committee was authorized.

Sections planned for the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Society in December 1945 are Social Research, Social Theory, Social Psychology, Population Sociometry, Community and Ecology, Family Criminology, Political Sociology, Educational Sociology, and General Sessions. In addition to these formal sections, members may submit papers for possible inclusion under a special category, "Contributed Papers." The membership the Committee to be in charge and the final date for submitting proposed papers will be announced in a subsequent issue of the journal "American Sociological Review."
