The availability of the classic physiological studies provides a unique teaching opportunity. The classic paper of Dr. Dwight Ingle represents just such a study. Dr. Ingle demonstrated that, using only purified extracts of the pituitary (ACTH) and adrenal cortex (corticosterone) and hypophysectomized rats, he could establish several of the basic principles of the control of adrenal function and glucocorticoid negative feedback that are now standard teaching material in endocrinology. An annotated figure from Dr. Ingle's paper is provided, which, when assigned to undergraduate or graduate students, will allow discovery learning. The article presents a call for persons interested in presenting a paper at the 1998 meeting of the American Association for the History of Medicine (AAHM). The 1998 meeting of the AAHM will be held May 7 through 10, 1998, in Toronto, Ontario. Any subject in the history of medicine is suitable for presentation, but the paper must represent original work not already published or in press. Presentations are limited to 20 minutes. The article reports that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) released a series of white papers on water distribution system issues that experts have ranked as potentially significant public health concerns relevant to the Total Coliform Rule. The white papers complement an earlier set of 10 papers on operational issues and were developed in cooperation with the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Topics addressed include intrusion, cross-connection control, aging infrastructure and corrosion, permeation and leaching, nitrification, biofilms and growth, covered storage, decay in water quality over time, and new and repaired water mains.

Unlike scholars in many other disciplines, economists show little organized concern for preserving disciplinary archives. Consider the contrast between the community of mathematicians and the community of economists: the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America have embarked on a joint project to preserve official archives and to advise individuals and groups about the preservation of personal and organization-related papers: these two large organizations have recognized that mathematicians' "personal papers and the records of mathematical institutions and organizations are a source for an understanding of history." Generally, donors are asked to sign an agreement that gives property of the papers to the repository; rarely do repositories accept collections on loan or deposit. Before signing such an agreement, one should become familiar with the repository's policies on availability and publication of the papers. Most repositories are willing to attempt to address any concerns one may have, such as a desire to restrict part of the collection to protect the privacy of others.

The Seventh European Control Conference took place in Cambridge, Great Britain on September 14, 2003. Women's groups in unions are collective, spaces within which women seek to advance their concerns and access empowering positions. This paper examines their pursuit of gender equality in unions. The need to explore unions and women's groups is heightened by women's significance as a source of union membership, and the connection between union revitalization and responsiveness to women. The paper uses case studies of two unions, MSF and USDAW, and seven women's groups. The analysis is structured by a typology of two frameworks: (i) a typology of gendered equality ideas derived from various literatures, and (ii) the dynamic and linked dimensions of Hyman's (1994) union organization model.
