The aim of this paper is to identify the trends of changes in atmospheric precipitation percolation under the changing climate conditions of Lithuania (the East Baltic region) based on long-term lysimeter studies. Data from 1987–2022 research (n = 1296) was used to determine trends in precipitation infiltration changes. Two 10-year periods, 1989–1998 and 2011–2020, were selected from the whole observation period (1987–2022) to assess changes in precipitation infiltration due to climate change. The air temperature has increased significantly in November (+3.4 °C) and December (+3.3 °C), with a +2.2 °C increase in the standard climate normal. The distribution of yearly precipitation has changed, with the annual amount decreasing from 686 to 652 mm. Precipitation increased the most in July and August (10.9 and 22.9 mm). In autumn, the amount of precipitation decreased by 7.9–31.1 mm. The number of rainy days did not change during the year, but the frequency of heavy precipitation increased significantly in August. The annual percolation increased by 14.2% over 2011–2020 compared to 1989–1998. Percolation increased by 19.0, 22.3, and 20.1% during the spring, autumn, and winter, respectively, and decreased by 35.0% in summer. The increase in annual percolation is mostly related to the increase in temperature during the cold season: November and December. During these months, the likelihood of early freeze formation, which interrupts gravitational water percolation in soil, is significantly reduced. In the spring, the increase in average air temperatures in March leads to faster melting of the winter snow in a shorter period, which significantly increases percolation processes. In Lithuania, higher percolation in autumn and winter, when part of the agricultural land is not covered by vegetation, may lead to higher leaching of chemical elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Nemunas River basin falls within the territories of five different countries - Belarus, Lithuania, Russia, Poland and Latvia. In general, the beginning of spring floods highly depends on rapid rise of air temperature, heavy precipitation and sudden snow melting in the analysed basin. In this paper, the conditions of formation and consequences of two catastrophic floods in 1958 and 1979 in the Nemunas River basin were studied regarding the hydrometeorological parameters (maximum snow water equivalent before the beginning of flood and precipitation amount during the flood) as well as runoff coefficients for each selected catastrophic flood. Differences between the main drivers and evolution of these floods were analysed. Spatial distribution of maximum snow water equivalent and precipitation, as well as runoff coefficient in different parts of the river basin, were identified as having the most significant impact on the formation of the studied catastrophic floods. Environmental conditions (temperature, moisture and the intensity of the sun) influence variation in asphalt pavement strength during the year. Lithuania is situated in a zone by average warm summers and average cold winters, and the most important climatic factor is the variation of the air temperature. This study presents the influence of temperature (of asphalt concrete (AC) and subgrade layers) and moisture content (of subgrade layers) to the pavement bearing capacity. The experimental research was obtained in five pavement sections of the experimental road. This experimental road was constructed in 2007 in Lithuania and is operated for more than 12 years. This paper presents a statistical analysis between the bearing capacity and the thickness of the asphalt concrete layers, the temperature and moisture content of different pavement layers, among sections, loaded and unloaded lanes (right and left wheel paths and tracks). The bearing capacity was evaluated by a falling weight deflectometer (FWD), temperature and moisture content by electronic sensors and thickness of AC layers by Georadar. Analysis of overall E0 and E0,h9 (bearing capacity at a depth of 9 cm from asphalt surface) data declares that seasonal impact on pavement structural strength due to a change of subgrade bearing capacity remains after correction of asphalt stiffness dependent on the temperature in the layer. However, it was detected that neither E0 nor E0,h9 are related to moisture content at a depths of 100 cm, 130 cm and 150 cm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is undeniable that winter weather is the most dangerous for all road users. Temperate climate creates winter weather conditions that are definitely challenging for road maintenance specialists: one year can be excessively snowy and relatively warm (high daily accident risk and maintenance costs), while the other would be cold and dry (lack of preparedness, lower maintenance, but higher standby costs). Therefore, with ongoing climate change, it is uncertain what weather can be expected in the future, especially with current predictions claiming climate change will bring higher variability and more frequent weather extremes. In order to estimate future impacts of climate change to road conditions (and traffic safety) during temperate winter, an analysis of climate model predictions was performed, using Lithuania as an example of such climate conditions. The focus of this analysis is on meteorological variables that are unfavourable for roads: number of days when air temperature fluctuates around 0 °C, number of days with snow and number of days with adverse driving conditions. Several time periods were chosen: reference (1986–2005), near-term (2016–2035) and long-term (2081–2100). The projections were made using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) outputs of 4 Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5). The data outputs of 3 global circulation models (GFDL-CM3, NorESM1-M and HadGEM2-ES) were statistically downscaled for meteorological stations in different regions of Lithuania in order to create distribution maps of climatic variables in the twenty-first century. Results showed that winter driving conditions should improve, and maintenance levels should decrease by the end of the twenty-first century. Nevertheless, a possibility remains that road maintenance and traffic safety might become less effective due to lack of awareness and preparedness, resulting in sudden and unexpected worsening of driving conditions on a day to day basis. Sports halls must meet strict requirements for energy and indoor air quality (IAQ); therefore, there is a great challenge in the design of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of such buildings. IAQ in sports halls may be affected by thermal stratification, pollutants from different sources, the maintenance of building, and the HVAC system of the building, as well as by the activities performed inside the building. The aim of this study is to investigate thermal stratification conditions in accordance with the performance of the HVAC systems in the basketball training hall of Žalgirio Arena, Kaunas in Lithuania. Field measurements including temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 concentration were implemented between January and February in 2017. The temperature and relative humidity were measured at different heights (0.1, 1.7, 2.5, 3.9, 5.4, and 6.9 m) and at five different locations in the arena. Experimental results show that mixing the ventilation application together with air heating results in higher temperatures in the occupied zone than in the case of air heating without ventilation. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations revealed that using the same heating output as for warm air heating and underfloor heating, combined with mechanical mixing or displacement ventilation, ensures higher temperatures in the occupied zone, creating a potential for energy saving. An increase of air temperature was noticed from 3.9 m upwards. Since CO2 concentration near the ceiling was permissible, the study concluded that it is possible to recycle the air from the mentioned zone and use it again by mixing with the air of lower layers, thus saving energy for air heating.
