Transgender (trans) women experience barriers to access to HIV care, which result in their lower engagement in HIV prevention, treatment and support relative to cisgender people living with HIV. Studies of trans women's barriers to HIV care have predominantly focused on perspectives of trans women, while barriers are most often described at provider, organisation and/or systems levels. Comparing perspectives of trans women and service providers may promote a shared vision for achieving health equity. Thus, this qualitative study utilised focus groups and semi‐structured interviews conducted 2018–2019 to understand barriers and facilitators to HIV care from the perspectives of trans women (n = 26) and service providers (n = 10). Barriers endorsed by both groups included: (a) anticipated and enacted stigma and discrimination in the provision of direct care, (b) lack of provider knowledge of HIV care needs for trans women, (c) absence of trans‐specific services/organisations and (d) cisnormativity in sexual healthcare. Facilitators included: (a) provision of trans‐positive trauma‐informed care, (b) autonomy and choice for trans women in selecting sexual health services and (c) models for trans‐affirming systems change. Each theme had significant overlap, yet nuanced perspective, between trans women and service providers. Specific recommendations to improve HIV care access for trans women are discussed. These recommendations can be used by administrators and service providers alike to work collaboratively with trans women to reduce barriers and facilitators to HIV care and ultimately to achieve health equity for trans women. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the experience of retirement for retired nursing professors. Design: The descriptive phenomenological qualitative method, developed by Giorgi, was used to conduct this study, through the lens of Continuity Theory and Carper’s Ways of Knowing Theory. Methods: Data were collected from four eligible participants in the form of written descriptions e-mailed to the researchers and analyzed using Giorgi’s analysis-synthesis process. Results: The results showed that retired nursing professors felt satisfied with what they had achieved over their careers. They experienced a positive and rewarding life post-retirement and had positive perceptions of many aspects of their retirement. Conclusion: The retired nursing professors continued with many pre-retirement activities and maintained productivity. They used their past and new knowledge to shape their daily life experiences in ways that enhanced their own well-being and quality of family and community connections. Their continued involvement in organizations post-retirement included many academic and professional activities such as presenting at conferences, supervising students, reviewing articles, and volunteering in other scholarly activities. Sexual and mental health disparities are reported in Arctic Canada as in other Arctic regions that experience shared challenges of insufficient healthcare resources, limited transportation, and a scarcity of healthcare research. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer persons (LGBTQ+) report sexual and mental health disparities in comparison with their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts, and these disparities may be exacerbated in rural versus urban settings. Yet limited research has explored sexual healthcare experiences among LGBTQ+ persons in the Arctic who are at the juncture of Arctic and LGBTQ+ health disparities. We conducted a qualitative study from May 2015 to October 2015 with LGBTQ+ persons in the Northwest Territories, Canada that involved in‐depth individual interviews with LGBTQ+ youth (n = 16), LGBTQ+ adults (n = 21), and key informants (e.g. coaches, teachers, nurses, social workers, and healthcare providers) (n = 14). We conducted thematic analysis, a theoretically flexible approach that integrates deductive and inductive approaches, to identify and map themes in the data. Findings reveal geographical, social, and healthcare factors converge to shape healthcare access. Specifically, the interplay between heterosexism and cisnormativity, intersectional forms of stigma, and place limited LGBTQ+ persons' sexual healthcare access and produced negative experiences in sexual healthcare. Limited healthcare facilities in small communities resulted in confidentiality concerns. Heteronormativity and cisnormativity constrained the ability to access appropriate sexual healthcare. LGBTQ+ persons experienced LGBTQ+, HIV, and sexually transmitted infections stigma in healthcare. Participants also discussed healthcare provider recommendations to better serve LGBTQ+ persons: non‐judgment, knowledge of LGBTQ+ health issues, and gender inclusivity. Findings can inform multi‐level strategies to reduce intersecting stigma in communities and healthcare, transform healthcare education, and build LGBTQ+ persons' healthcare navigation skills. This article examines the restriction of smoking on university campuses in the Canadian context. Indoor smoking on campus is now completely prohibited by law, and universities are increasingly moving to restrict, or prohibit, outdoor smoking on their grounds. The research focuses on three case studies to identify changes in spatial restrictions on campus smoking over the last four decades (1970-2010), and to determine the challenges involved in establishing bans in outdoor areas of campus. The three universities were selected for their different approaches to the issue of outdoor smoking. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with 36 key informants, conducted from September 2010 to January 2011, supplemented by documentary information. Interview data were analysed thematically. Protection against environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on campus proceeded incrementally, via policy-making at the provincial, municipal and institutional levels. Historically, institutional bans on indoor smoking were particularly significant, but their health benefits could be limited by the presence of private property on campus. Universities continue to initiate smoking restrictions today, with respect to outdoor bans. However, respondents reported myriad challenges in developing, implementing and maintaining such bans. Five principal concerns were articulated: the need for ongoing policy communication; management of community relations as smokers are displaced from campus; enforcement to ensure that the policy has practical effect; safety concerns; and difficulties relating to campus layout. Because challenges are diverse and contextual, effective protection against outdoor ETS on campus is likely to require an ongoing commitment on the part of administrators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study examining the obstacles and issues Iranian immigrants face in accessing health care in Toronto, Ontario. As mentioned, after interviewing the health care professionals and social workers, it was found that language barrier, lack of knowledge of Canadian health care services and lack of trust in Canadian health care services due to financial limitations have been the main reason for dissatisfaction of Iranian immigrants.

In this study, we document cancer healthcare professionals' views of patients' use of cancer‐related Internet information (CRII) and their views on how it informs the ways patients interact with healthcare professionals and services from the point of view of health professionals. We used an interpretive descriptive approach, conducting interviews and focus groups with oncology healthcare professionals (n = 21) at a University‐affiliated western Canadian cancer treatment centre. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. We present an initial understanding of how CRII alters, informs and modulates patients' cancer experience and relates to their interactions with healthcare professionals and services. Findings were synthesised into two thematic categories: pragmatic concerns and priorities; and processes and practices. Healthcare professionals were supportive of patients' needs for more information, particularly at key points in the cancer trajectory when information may be lacking. Participants concurred that CRII could positively benefit patients and, if shared with their healthcare professional, could benefit the patient–healthcare professional relationship. Oncology healthcare professionals provide pivotal information to patients; thus, they are well situated to engage patients in discussions about CRII and incorporate this into patient encounters. These actions may open new lines of communication with patients, strengthen the patient–professional relationship and empower patients to be engaged in their own care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
