According to the World Health Organization statistics, as of 25 October 2022, there have been 625,248,843 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 65,622,281 deaths worldwide. The spread and severity of COVID-19 are alarming. The economy and life of countries worldwide have been greatly affected. The rapid and accurate diagnosis of COVID-19 directly affects the spread of the virus and the degree of harm. Currently, the classification of chest X-ray or CT images based on artificial intelligence is an important method for COVID-19 diagnosis. It can assist doctors in making judgments and reduce the misdiagnosis rate. The convolutional neural network (CNN) is very popular in computer vision applications, such as applied to biological image segmentation, traffic sign recognition, face recognition, and other fields. It is one of the most widely used machine learning methods. This paper mainly introduces the latest deep learning methods and techniques for diagnosing COVID-19 using chest X-ray or CT images based on the convolutional neural network. It reviews the technology of CNN at various stages, such as rectified linear units, batch normalization, data augmentation, dropout, and so on. Several well-performing network architectures are explained in detail, such as AlexNet, ResNet, DenseNet, VGG, GoogleNet, etc. We analyzed and discussed the existing CNN automatic COVID-19 diagnosis systems from sensitivity, accuracy, precision, specificity, and F1 score. The systems use chest X-ray or CT images as datasets. Overall, CNN has essential value in COVID-19 diagnosis. All of them have good performance in the existing experiments. If expanding the datasets, adding GPU acceleration and data preprocessing techniques, and expanding the types of medical images, the performance of CNN will be further improved. Since two years ago, the COVID-19 virus has spread strongly in the world and has killed more than 6 million people directly and has affected the lives of more than 500 million people. Early diagnosis of the virus can help to break the chain of transmission and reduce the death rate. In most cases, the virus spreads in the infected person's chest. Therefore, the analysis of a chest CT scan is one of the most efficient methods for diagnosing a patient. Until now, various methods have been presented to diagnose COVID-19 disease in chest CT-scan images. Most recent studies have proposed deep learning-based methods. But handcrafted features provide acceptable results in some studies too. In this paper, an innovative approach is proposed based on the combination of low-level and deep features. First of all, local neighborhood difference patterns are performed to extract handcrafted texture features. Next, deep features are extracted using MobileNetV2. Finally, a two-level decision-making algorithm is performed to improve the detection rate especially when the proposed decisions based on the two different feature set are not the same. The proposed approach is evaluated on a collected dataset of chest CT scan images from June 1, 2021, to December 20, 2021, of 238 cases in two groups of patient and healthy in different COVID-19 variants. The results show that the combination of texture and deep features can provide better performance than using each feature set separately. This paper proposes a new deep learning (DL) framework for the analysis of lung diseases, including COVID-19 and pneumonia, from chest CT scans and X-ray (CXR) images. This framework is termed optimized DenseNet201 for lung diseases (LDDNet). The proposed LDDNet was developed using additional layers of 2D global average pooling, dense and dropout layers, and batch normalization to the base DenseNet201 model. There are 1024 Relu-activated dense layers and 256 dense layers using the sigmoid activation method. The hyper-parameters of the model, including the learning rate, batch size, epochs, and dropout rate, were tuned for the model. Next, three datasets of lung diseases were formed from separate open-access sources. One was a CT scan dataset containing 1043 images. Two X-ray datasets comprising images of COVID-19-affected lungs, pneumonia-affected lungs, and healthy lungs exist, with one being an imbalanced dataset with 5935 images and the other being a balanced dataset with 5002 images. The performance of each model was analyzed using the Adam, Nadam, and SGD optimizers. The best results have been obtained for both the CT scan and CXR datasets using the Nadam optimizer. For the CT scan images, LDDNet showed a COVID-19-positive classification accuracy of 99.36%, a 100% precision recall of 98%, and an F1 score of 99%. For the X-ray dataset of 5935 images, LDDNet provides a 99.55% accuracy, 73% recall, 100% precision, and 85% F1 score using the Nadam optimizer in detecting COVID-19-affected patients. For the balanced X-ray dataset, LDDNet provides a 97.07% classification accuracy. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a viral pneumonia that originated in China and has rapidly spread around the world. Early diagnosis is important to provide effective and timely treatment. Thus, many studies have attempted to solve the COVID-19 classification problems of workload classification, disease detection, and differentiation from other types of pneumonia and healthy lungs using different radiological imaging modalities. To date, several researchers have investigated the problem of using deep learning methods to detect COVID-19, but there are still unsolved challenges in this field, which this review aims to identify. The existing research on the COVID-19 classification problem suffers from limitations due to the use of the binary or flat multiclass classification, and building classifiers based on only a few classes. Moreover, most prior studies have focused on a single feature modality and evaluated their systems using a small public dataset. These studies also show a reliance on diagnostic processes based on CT as the main imaging modality, ignoring chest X-rays, as explained below. Accordingly, the aim of this review is to examine existing methods and frameworks in the literature that have been used to detect and classify COVID-19, as well as to identify research gaps and highlight the limitations from a critical perspective. The paper concludes with a list of recommendations, which are expected to assist future researchers in improving the diagnostic process for COVID-19 in particular. A comprehensive medical image-based diagnosis is usually performed across various image modalities before passing a final decision; hence, designing a deep learning model that can use any medical image modality to diagnose a particular disease is of great interest. The available methods are multi-staged, with many computational bottlenecks in between. This paper presents an improved end-to-end method of multimodal image classification using deep learning models. We present top research methods developed over the years to improve models trained from scratch and transfer learning approaches. We show that when fully trained, a model can first implicitly discriminate the imaging modality and then diagnose the relevant disease. Our developed models were applied to COVID-19 classification from chest X-ray, CT scan, and lung ultrasound image modalities. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. COVID-19 is found to be the most infectious disease in last few decades. This disease has infected millions of people worldwide. The inadequate availability and the limited sensitivity of the testing kits have motivated the clinicians and the scientist to use Computer Tomography (CT) scans to screen COVID-19. Recent advances in technology and the availability of deep learning approaches have proved to be very promising in detecting COVID-19 with increased accuracy. However, deep learning approaches require a huge labeled training dataset, and the current availability of benchmark COVID-19 data is still small. For the limited training data scenario, the CNN usually overfits after several iterations. Hence, in this work, we have investigated different pre-trained network architectures with transfer learning for COVID-19 detection that can work even on a small medical imaging dataset. Various variants of the pre-trained ResNet model, namely ResNet18, ResNet50, and ResNet101, are investigated in the current paper for the detection of COVID-19. The experimental results reveal that transfer learned ResNet50 model outperformed other models by achieving a recall of 98.80% and an F1-score of 98.41%. To further improvise the results, the activations from different layers of best performing model are also explored for the detection using the support vector machine, logistic regression and K-nearest neighbor classifiers. Moreover, a classifier fusion strategy is also proposed that fuses the predictions from the different classifiers via majority voting. The outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been a nightmare to citizens, hospitals, healthcare practitioners, and the economy in 2020. The overwhelming number of confirmed cases and suspected cases put forward an unprecedented challenge to the hospital’s capacity of management and medical resource distribution. To reduce the possibility of cross-infection and attend a patient according to his severity level, expertly diagnosis and sophisticated medical examinations are often required but hard to fulfil during a pandemic. To facilitate the assessment of a patient’s severity, this paper proposes a multi-modality feature learning and fusion model for end-to-end covid patient severity prediction using the blood test supported electronic medical record (EMR) and chest computerized tomography (CT) scan images. To evaluate a patient’s severity by the co-occurrence of salient clinical features, the High-order Factorization Network (HoFN) is proposed to learn the impact of a set of clinical features without tedious feature engineering. On the other hand, an attention-based deep convolutional neural network (CNN) using pre-trained parameters are used to process the lung CT images. Finally, to achieve cohesion of cross-modality representation, we design a loss function to shift deep features of both-modality into the same feature space which improves the model’s performance and robustness when one modality is absent. Early detection and diagnosis of COVID-19, as well as the exact separation of non-COVID-19 cases in a non-invasive manner in the earliest stages of the disease, are critical concerns in the current COVID-19 pandemic. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based models offer a remarkable capacity for providing an accurate and efficient system for the detection and diagnosis of COVID-19. Due to the limited availability of RT-PCR (Reverse transcription-polymerase Chain Reaction) tests in developing countries, imaging-based techniques could offer an alternative and affordable solution to detect COVID-19 symptoms. This paper reviewed the current CNN-based approaches and investigated a custom-designed CNN method to detect COVID-19 symptoms from CT (Computed Tomography) chest scan images. This study demonstrated an integrated method to accelerate the process of classifying CT scan images. In order to improve the computational time, a hardware-based acceleration method was investigated and implemented on a reconfigurable platform (FPGA). Experimental results highlight the difference between various approximations of the design, providing a range of design options corresponding to both software and hardware. The FPGA-based implementation involved a reduced pre-processed feature vector for the classification task, which is a unique advantage of this particular application. Currently, improving the identification of COVID-19 with the help of computer vision and artificial intelligence has received great attention from researchers. This paper proposes a novel method for automatic detection of COVID-19 based on chest CT to help radiologists improve the speed and reliability of tests for diagnosing COVID-19. Our algorithm is a hybrid approach based on the Gray-level Cooccurrence Matrix and Genetic Algorithm. The Gray-level Cooccurrence Matrix (GLCM) was used to extract CT scan image features, GA algorithm was used as an optimizer, and a feedforward neural network was used as a classifier. Finally, we use 296 chest CT scan images to evaluate the detection performance of our proposed method. To more accurately evaluate the accuracy of the algorithm, 10-run 10-fold cross-validation was introduced. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019, the rapid spread of the epidemic has brought huge challenges to medical institutions. If the pathological region in the COVID-19 CT image can be automatically segmented, it will help doctors quickly determine the patient's infection, thereby speeding up the diagnosis process. To be able to automatically segment the infected area, we proposed a new network structure and named QC-HC U-Net. First, we combine residual connection and dense connection to form a new connection method and apply it to the encoder and the decoder. Second, we choose to add Hypercolumns in the decoder section. Compared with the benchmark 3D U-Net, the improved network can effectively avoid vanishing gradient while extracting more features. To improve the situation of insufficient data, resampling and data enhancement methods are selected in this paper to expand the datasets. We used 63 cases of MSD lung tumor data for training and testing, continuously verified to ensure the training effect of this model, and then selected 20 cases of public COVID-19 data for training and testing. Experimental results showed that in the segmentation of COVID-19, the specificity and sensitivity were 85.3% and 83.6%, respectively, and in the segmentation of MSD lung tumors, the specificity and sensitivity were 81.45% and 80.93%, respectively, without any fitting. This paper focuses on the application of deep learning (DL) in the diagnosis of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The novelty of this work is in the introduction of optimized InceptionResNetV2 for COVID-19 (CO-IRv2) method. A part of the CO-IRv2 scheme is derived from the concepts of InceptionNet and ResNet with hyperparameter tuning, while the remaining part is a new architecture consisting of a global average pooling layer, batch normalization, dense layers, and dropout layers. The proposed CO-IRv2 is applied to a new dataset of 2481 computed tomography (CT) images formed by collecting two independent datasets. Data resizing and normalization are performed, and the evaluation is run up to 25 epochs. Various performance metrics, including precision, recall, accuracy, F1-score, area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUC) curve are used as performance metrics. The effectiveness of three optimizers known as Adam, Nadam and RMSProp are evaluated in classifying suspected COVID-19 patients and normal people. Results show that for CO-IRv2 and for CT images, the obtained accuracies of Adam, Nadam and RMSProp optimizers are 94.97%, 96.18% and 96.18%, respectively. Furthermore, it is shown here that for the case of CT images, CO-IRv2 with Nadam optimizer has better performance than existing DL algorithms in the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients. Background: In medical diagnosis and clinical practice, diagnosing a disease early is crucial for accurate treatment, lessening the stress on the healthcare system. In medical imaging research, image processing techniques tend to be vital in analyzing and resolving diseases with a high degree of accuracy. This paper establishes a new image classification and segmentation method through simulation techniques, conducted over images of COVID-19 patients in India, introducing the use of Quantum Machine Learning (QML) in medical practice.Methods: This study establishes a prototype model for classifying COVID-19, comparing it with non-COVID pneumonia signals in Computed tomography (CT) images. The simulation work evaluates the usage of quantum machine learning algorithms, while assessing the efficacy for deep learning models for image classification problems, and thereby establishes performance quality that is required for improved prediction rate when dealing with complex clinical image data exhibiting high biases.Results: The study considers a novel algorithmic implementation leveraging quantum neural network (QNN). The proposed model outperformed the conventional deep learning models for specific classification task. The performance was evident because of the efficiency of quantum simulation and faster convergence property solving for an optimization problem for network training particularly for large-scale biased image classification task. The model run-time observed on quantum optimized hardware was 52 min, while on K80 GPU hardware it was 1 h 30 min for similar sample size. The simulation shows that QNN outperforms DNN, CNN, 2D CNN by more than 2.92% in gain in accuracy measure with an average recall of around 97.7%.Conclusion: The results suggest that quantum neural networks outperform in COVID-19 traits' classification task, comparing to deep learning w.r.t model efficacy and training time. The lungs are a vital organ of the human body. Malfunctioning of the lungs caused a direct threat to life. In recent years the world has witnessed massive medical insufficiency to handle the lung diseases caused by numerous agents including COVID-19. According to the recommended course of treatment, medical imaging tests including X-rays and CT scans have been very helpful in identifying multiple chest infections. Automatic detection of chest disease is the need of the modern time as it will speed up patient care and reduce doctors' workload. An Iterative Enhancement Fusion-based Cascaded (IEFCM) model to identify multiple diseases from chest X-ray images is suggested in the present paper. If a chest infection is discovered in the imaging, the suggested model additionally localizes the precise infected area on the CXR image. Experimental outcome clearly demonstrates that the performance of suggested model is significantly superior to the pre-trained model, that is the Golden standard dataset and data from the local population. In terms of sensitivity and specificity, IEFCM achieved 95.62 % sensitivity, which indicates an accurate diagnosis of lung disease, reducing the risk of missing any instances. In recent years, COVID-19 has spread rapidly among humans. Chest CT is an effective means of diagnosing COVID-19. However, the diagnosis of CT images still depends on the doctor's visual judgment and medical experience. This takes a certain amount of time and may lead to misjudgment. In this paper, a new algorithm for automatic diagnosis of COVID-19 based on chest CT image data was proposed. The algorithm comprehensively uses WE to extract image features, uses ELM for training, and finally passes k-fold CV validation. Rapid diagnosis of the Covid-19 disease is the best way to prevent infection. In this paper, it is proposed to use machine learning methods to aid diagnoses quickly Covid-19 and focused on effect of several features on classification accuracy. In the proposed method 746 axial computed tomography (CT) images of the lung; 349 Covid-19 (positives) and 397 non-Covid-19 (negative) are used. Gray-level texture, shape and first order statistical features were extracted from the images. The feature vector for model training is constructed with one feature group or combination of more than one group. We then classified with Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, k-nearest neighbor and XGBoost classifier models. The hyperparameter of the models were controlled by the tuning test. Experimental results obtained with 10-fold cross-validation. The results of cross-validation verified with the additionally independent test. The best overall accuracy was 98.65% with first order statistics features classified with XGBoost. In the gray level features, the best individual results given by GLSZM as 81.25%, and the best combination result is with GLDM, GLRLM and GLSZM features as 85.52%. An important finding of this paper is that, for Covid-19 classification, the shape and first order statistics features are more valuable than gray level features. The proposed results compared with the literature studies under some Covid-19 dataset for accuracy, precision, sensitivity and F1-score metrics. Also, the literature studies which used the different Covid-19 dataset were compared with the proposed study. Our results have the significant superiority when compared with the literature studies. The detection of the COronaVIrus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) from Computed Tomography (CT) scans has become a very important task in modern medical diagnosis. Unfortunately, typical resolutions of state-of-the-art CT scans are still not adequate for reliable and accurate automatic detection of COVID-19 disease. Motivated by this consideration, in this paper, we propose a novel architecture that jointly affords the Single-Image Super-Resolution (SISR) and the reliable classification problems from Low Resolution (LR) and noisy CT scans. Specifically, the proposed architecture is based on a couple of Twinned Residual Auto-Encoders (TRAE), which exploits the feature vectors and the SR images recovered by a Master AE for performing transfer learning and then improves the training of a "twinned" Follower AE. In addition, we also develop a Task-Aware (TA) version of the basic TRAE architecture, namely the TA-TRAE, which further utilizes the set of feature vectors generated by the Follower AE for the joint training of an additional auxiliary classifier, so to perform automated medical diagnosis on the basis of the available LR input images without human support. Experimental results and comparisons with a number of state-of-the-art CNN/GAN/CycleGAN benchmark SISR architectures, performed by considering × 2 , × 4 , and × 8 super-resolution (i.e., upscaling) factors, support the effectiveness of the proposed TRAE/TA-TRAE architectures. The global economy has been dramatically impacted by COVID‐19, which has spread to be a pandemic. COVID‐19 virus affects the respiratory system, causing difficulty breathing in the patient. It is crucial to identify and treat infections as soon as possible. Traditional diagnostic reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR) methods require more time to find the infection. A high infection rate, slow laboratory analysis, and delayed test results caused the widespread and uncontrolled spread of the disease. This study aims to diagnose the COVID‐19 epidemic by leveraging a modified convolutional neural network (CNN) to quickly and safely predict the disease's appearance from computed tomography (CT) scan images and a laboratory and physiological parameters dataset. A dataset representing 500 patients was used to train, test, and validate the CNN model with results in detecting COVID‐19 having an accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F1‐score of 99.33%, 99.09%, 99.52%, and 99.24%, respectively. Even with over 80% of the population being vaccinated against COVID-19, the disease continues to claim victims. Therefore, it is crucial to have a secure Computer-Aided Diagnostic system that can assist in identifying COVID-19 and determining the necessary level of care. This is especially important in the Intensive Care Unit to monitor disease progression or regression in the fight against this epidemic. To accomplish this, we merged public datasets from the literature to train lung and lesion segmentation models with five different distributions. We then trained eight CNN models for COVID-19 and Common-Acquired Pneumonia classification. If the examination was classified as COVID-19, we quantified the lesions and assessed the severity of the full CT scan. To validate the system, we used Resnetxt101 Unet++ and Mobilenet Unet for lung and lesion segmentation, respectively, achieving accuracy of 98.05%, F1-score of 98.70%, precision of 98.7%, recall of 98.7%, and specificity of 96.05%. This was accomplished in just 19.70 s per full CT scan, with external validation on the SPGC dataset. Finally, when classifying these detected lesions, we used Densenet201 and achieved accuracy of 90.47%, F1-score of 93.85%, precision of 88.42%, recall of 100.0%, and specificity of 65.07%. The results demonstrate that our pipeline can correctly detect and segment lesions due to COVID-19 and Common-Acquired Pneumonia in CT scans. It can differentiate these two classes from normal exams, indicating that our system is efficient and effective in identifying the disease and assessing the severity of the condition. Considering the current pandemic, caused by the spreading of the novel Coronavirus disease, there is the urgent need for methods to quickly and automatically diagnose infection. To assist pathologists and radiologists in the detection of the novel coronavirus, in this paper we propose a two-tiered method, based on formal methods (to the best of authors knowledge never previously introduced in this context), aimed to (i) detect whether the patient lungs are healthy or present a generic pulmonary infection; (ii) in the case of the previous tier, a generic pulmonary disease is detected to identify whether the patient under analysis is affected by the novel Coronavirus disease. The proposed approach relies on the extraction of radiomic features from medical images and on the generation of a formal model that can be automatically checked using the model checking technique. (1) Background: Rapid and accurate negative discrimination enables efficient management of scarce isolated bed resources and adequate patient accommodation in the majority of areas experiencing an explosion of confirmed cases due to Omicron mutations. Until now, methods for artificial intelligence or deep learning to replace time-consuming RT-PCR have relied on CXR, chest CT, blood test results, or clinical information. (2) Methods: We proposed and compared five different types of deep learning algorithms (RNN, LSTM, Bi-LSTM, GRU, and transformer) for reducing the time required for RT-PCR diagnosis by learning the change in fluorescence value derived over time during the RT-PCR process. (3) Results: Among the five deep learning algorithms capable of training time series data, Bi-LSTM and GRU were shown to be able to decrease the time required for RT–PCR diagnosis by half or by 25% without significantly impairing the diagnostic performance of the COVID-19 RT–PCR test. (4) Conclusions: The diagnostic performance of the model developed in this study when 40 cycles of RT–PCR are used for diagnosis shows the possibility of nearly halving the time required for RT–PCR diagnosis. Although a long time has passed since its outbreak, there is currently no specific treatment for COVID-19, and it seems that the most appropriate strategy to combat this pandemic is to identify and isolate infected individuals. Various clinical diagnosis methods such as molecular techniques, serologic assays, and imaging techniques have been developed to identify suspected patients. Although reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) has emerged as a reference standard method for diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2, the high rate of false-negative results and limited supplies to meet current demand are the main shortcoming of this technique. Based on a comprehensive literature review, imaging techniques, particularly computed tomography (CT), show an acceptable level of sensitivity in the diagnosis and follow-up of COVID-19. Indeed, because lung infection or pneumonia is a common complication of COVID-19, the chest CT scan can be an alternative testing method in the early diagnosis and treatment assessment of the disease. In this review, we summarize all the currently available frontline diagnostic tools for the detection of SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals and highlight the value of chest CT scan in the diagnosis, prognosis, staging, management, and follow-up of infected patients. With a global COVID-19 pandemic, the number of confirmed patients increases rapidly, leaving the world with very few medical resources. Therefore, the fast diagnosis and monitoring of COVID-19 are one of the world's most critical challenges today. Artificial intelligence-based CT image classification models can quickly and accurately distinguish infected patients from healthy populations. Our research proposes a deep learning model (WE-SAJ) using wavelet entropy for feature extraction, two-layer FNNs for classification and the adaptive Jaya algorithm as a training algorithm. It achieves superior performance compared to the Jaya-based model. The model has a sensitivity of 85.47±1.84, specificity of 87.23±1.67 precision of 87.03±1.34, an accuracy of 86.35±0.70, and F1 score of 86.23±0.77, Matthews correlation coefficient of 72.75±1.38, and feature mutual information of 86.24±0.76. Our experiments demonstrate the potential of artificial intelligence techniques for COVID-19 diagnosis and the effectiveness of the Self-adaptive Jaya algorithm compared to the Jaya algorithm for medical image classification tasks. Background: Since December 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has been causing cases of severe pneumonia in China and has spread all over the world, putting great pressure on health systems. Nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) sensitivity is suboptimal. When the SARS-CoV-2 infection is suspected despite negative NPSs, other tests may help to rule out the infection. Objectives: To evaluate the yield of the lower respiratory tract (LRT) isolation of SARS-CoV-2. To evaluate the correlations between SARS-CoV-2 detection and clinical symptoms, and laboratory values and RSNA CT review scores in suspect patients after two negative NPSs. To assess the safety of bronchoscopy in this scenario. Method: A retrospective analysis of data from LRT sampling (blind nasotracheal aspiration or bronchial washing) for suspected COVID-19 after two negative NPS. Chest CT scans were reviewed by two radiologists using the RSNA imaging classification. Results: SARS-CoV-2 was detected in 14/99 patients (14.1%). A correlation was found between SARS-CoV2 detection on the LRT and the presence of a cough as well as with typical CT features. Typical CT resulted in 57.1% sensitivity, 80.8% accuracy and 92.3% NPV. Neither severe complications nor infections in the personnel were reported. Conclusions: In suspect cases after two negative swabs, CT scan revision can help to rule out COVID-19. Background: Here propose a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system to differentiate COVID-19 (the coronavirus disease of 2019) patients from normal cases, as well as to perform infection region segmentation along with infection severity estimation using computed tomography (CT) images. The developed system facilitates timely administration of appropriate treatment by identifying the disease stage without reliance on medical professionals. So far, this developed model gives the most accurate, fully automatic COVID-19 real-time CAD framework. Results: The CT image dataset of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 individuals were subjected to conventional ML stages to perform binary classification. In the feature extraction stage, SIFT, SURF, ORB image descriptors and bag of features technique were implemented for the appropriate differentiation of chest CT regions affected with COVID-19 from normal cases. This is the first work introducing this concept for COVID-19 diagnosis application. The preferred diverse database and selected features that are invariant to scale, rotation, distortion, noise etc. make this framework real-time applicable. Also, this fully automatic approach which is faster compared to existing models helps to incorporate it into CAD systems. The severity score was measured based on the infected regions along the lung field. Infected regions were segmented through a three-class semantic segmentation of the lung CT image. Using severity score, the disease stages were classified as mild if the lesion area covers less than 25% of the lung area; moderate if 25–50% and severe if greater than 50%. Our proposed model resulted in classification accuracy of 99.7% with a PNN classifier, along with area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9988, 99.6% sensitivity, 99.9% specificity and a misclassification rate of 0.0027. The developed infected region segmentation model gave 99.47% global accuracy, 94.04% mean accuracy, 0.8968 mean IoU (intersection over union), 0.9899 weighted IoU, and a mean Boundary F1 (BF) contour matching score of 0.9453, using Deepabv3+ with its weights initialized using ResNet-50. Conclusions: The developed CAD system model is able to perform fully automatic and accurate diagnosis of COVID-19 along with infected region extraction and disease stage identification. This app project was aimed to remotely deliver diagnoses and disease-progression information to COVID-19 patients to help minimize risk during this and future pandemics. Data collected from chest computed tomography (CT) scans of COVID-19-infected patients were shared through the app. In this article, we focused on image preprocessing techniques to identify and highlight areas with ground glass opacity (GGO) and pulmonary infiltrates (PIs) in CT image sequences of COVID-19 cases. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were used to classify the disease progression of pneumonia. Each GGO and PI pattern was highlighted with saliency map fusion, and the resulting map was used to train and test a CNN classification scheme with three classes. In addition to patients, this information was shared between the respiratory triage/radiologist and the COVID-19 multidisciplinary teams with the application so that the severity of the disease could be understood through CT and medical diagnosis. The three-class, disease-level COVID-19 classification results exhibited a macro-precision of more than 94.89% in a two-fold cross-validation. The proposed work describes an approach for the segmentation of abnormal lung CT scans of COVID-19. Lung diseases are the leading killer in both men and women. The pulmonary experts normally make attempts, such as early detection of patients by tomography tests before lung specialists treat patients who are tortured by lung disease. Moreover, lung specialists do their best to detect the presence of lung conditions. X rays or CT scan checks are performed for tomography tests. The finest approach for medical diagnosis and a wide range of uses is computed tomography (CT). This kind of imaging offers elaborate cross-sectional pictures of skinny slices of the organic structure. However, the preprocessing and denoising methods of Lung CT scans may mask some important image features. To address this challenge, we propose a novel framework involving an optimization technique algorithm to solve a multilevel thresholding problem based on information theory to segment abnormal lung CT scans. The proposed framework will evaluate a sample of CT scan images taken from a well-known benchmark database. The COVID‐19 pandemic has a significant impact on human health globally. The illness is due to the presence of a virus manifesting itself in a widespread disease resulting in a high mortality rate in the whole world. According to the study, infected patients have distinct radiographic visual characteristics as well as dry cough, breathlessness, fever, and other symptoms. Although, the reverse transcription polymerase‐chain reaction (RT‐PCR) test has been used for COVID‐19 testing its reliability is very low. Therefore, computed tomography and X‐ray images have been widely used. Artificial intelligence coupled with X‐ray technologies has recently shown to be more effective in the diagnosis of this disease. With this motivation, a comparative analysis of fine‐tuned deep learning architectures has been made to speed up the detection and classification of COVID‐19 patients from other pneumonia groups. The models used for this analysis are MobileNetV2, ResNet50, InceptionV3, NASNetMobile, VGG16, Xception, InceptionResNetV2 DenseNet121, which have been fine‐tuned using a new set of layers replaced with the head of the network. This research work has carried out an analysis on two datasets. Dataset‐1 includes the images of three classes: Normal, COVID, and Pneumonia. Dataset‐2, in contrast, contains the same classes with more focus on two prominent pneumonia categories: bacterial pneumonia and viral pneumonia. The research was conducted on 959 X‐ray images (250 of Bacterial Pneumonia, 250 of Viral Pneumonia, 209 of COVID, and 250 of Normal cases). Using the confusion matrix, the required results of different models have been computed. For the first dataset, DenseNet121 has obtained a 97% accuracy, while for the second dataset, MobileNetV2 has performed best with an accuracy of 81%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading rapidly around the world, resulting in a global pandemic. Imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) play an essential role in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease since lung infection or pneumonia is a common complication. However, training a deep network to learn how to diagnose COVID-19 rapidly and accurately in CT images and segment the infected regions like a radiologist is challenging. Since the infectious area is difficult to distinguish manually annotation, the segmentation results are time-consuming. To tackle these problems, we propose an efficient method based on a deep adversarial network to segment the infection regions automatically. Then, the predicted segment results can assist the diagnostic network in identifying the COVID-19 samples from the CT images. On the other hand, a radiologist-like segmentation network provides detailed information of the infectious regions by separating areas of ground-glass, consolidation, and pleural effusion, respectively. Our method can accurately predict the COVID-19 infectious probability and provide lesion regions in CT images with limited training data. Additionally, we have established a public dataset for multitask learning. Extensive experiments on diagnosis and segmentation show superior performance over state-of-the-art methods. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed a major public health crisis all over the world. The role of chest imaging, especially computed tomography (CT), has evolved during the pandemic paralleling the accumulation of scientific evidence. In the early stage of the pandemic, the performance of chest imaging for COVID-19 has widely been debated especially in the context of comparison to real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Current evidence is against the use of chest imaging for routine screening of COVID-19 contrary to the initial expectations. It still has an integral role to play, however, in its work up and staging, especially when assessing complications or disease progression. Chest CT is gold standard imaging modality for COVID-19 pneumonia; in some situations, chest X-ray or ultrasound may be an effective alternative. The most important role of radiologists in this context is to be able to identify those patients at greatest risk of imminent clinical decompensation by learning to stratify cases of COVID-19 on the basis of radiologic imaging in the most efficient and timely fashion possible. The present availability of multiple and more refined CT grading systems and classification is now making this task easier and thereby contributing to the recent improvements achieved in COVID-19 treatment and outcomes. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has caused havoc worldwide. The tests currently used to diagnose COVID-19 are based on real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), computed tomography medical imaging techniques and immunoassays. It takes 2 days to obtain results from the RT-PCR test and also shortage of test kits creating a requirement for alternate and rapid methods to accurately diagnose COVID-19. Application of artificial intelligence technologies such as the Internet of Things, machine learning tools and big data analysis to COVID-19 diagnosis could yield rapid and accurate results. The neural networks and machine learning tools can also be used to develop potential drug molecules. Pharmaceutical companies face challenges linked to the costs of drug molecules, research and development efforts, reduced efficiency of drugs, safety concerns and the conduct of clinical trials. Background and Objectives: In this study, the performance of three different commercial antibody assays for COVID-19 was examined and parameters affecting the antibody response were investigated. The correlation of patients' chest CT results, procalcitonin, CRP, and D-dimer levels with the antibody response were retrospectively evaluated. Materials and Methods: COVID-19 antibodies were detected by three commercially available assays in each patient. Two of the assays were rapid immunochromatographic tests and - one was an ELISA-based IgG assay. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was tested by "COVID-19 RT-qPCR Detection Kit" using nasopharyngeal swab samples. The results of antibody tests were compared with each other, RT-qPCR, Biochemical parameters and chest CT findings. Results: RT-qPCR was positive in 46.6% (41/88) of the evaluated patients among which 77.3% (68/88) were healthcare workers. Seventeen (41.4%) of viral RNA positive patients had a positive antibody result with at least two assays. Both of the rapid immunochromatographic tests had identical sensitivity of 36.6% and specificity of 100%, compared to RT-qPCR assay; while the sensitivity of the ELISA based Euroimmune test was 43.9%, and the specificity was 95.7%. The sensitivity and specificity of the immunochromatographic tests were 75% and 100% respectively, compared to ELISA test result. There was a correlation between antibody positivity and old age and male gender. The presence of typical chest CT findings increased the antibody positivity 13.62 times. Antibody positivity was also increased with the decrease in Ct value of the PCR assay. There was no significant relationship between the biochemical parameters (CRP, D-dimer and procalcitonin values) and the antibody or RT-qPCR results. The COVID-19 pandemic has widely influenced oncological imaging mainly by presenting unexpected pulmonary and mediastinal lesions. The ongoing global program of vaccination has led to incidental diagnosis of axillary lymphadenopathy. We present a case of increased accumulation of 18F-FDG in an axillary lymph node in a PET/CT scan performed in a 43-year-old female patient with metastatic melanoma. The scan was performed 4 days after the AZD1222 vaccination. The occurrence of lymphadenopathy was verified with another PET/CT scan scheduled one month later. This case report presents a possible misinterpretation of PET/CT images caused by the recent COVID-19 vaccination. To avoid distress of the patient and unnecessary oncological diagnostics to verify the findings, we recommend avoiding scheduling PET/CT shortly after vaccination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to propose a high-speed and accurate fully-automated method to detect COVID-19 from the patient's chest CT scan images. We introduce a new dataset that contains 48,260 CT scan images from 282 normal persons and 15,589 images from 95 patients with COVID-19 infections. At the first stage, this system runs our proposed image processing algorithm that analyzes the view of the lung to discard those CT images that inside the lung is not properly visible in them. This action helps to reduce the processing time and false detections. At the next stage, we introduce a novel architecture for improving the classification accuracy of convolutional networks on images containing small important objects. Our architecture applies a new feature pyramid network designed for classification problems to the ResNet50V2 model so the model becomes able to investigate different resolutions of the image and do not lose the data of small objects. As the infections of COVID-19 exist in various scales, especially many of them are tiny, using our method helps to increase the classification performance remarkably. After running these two phases, the system determines the condition of the patient using a selected threshold. We are the first to evaluate our system in two different ways on Xception, ResNet50V2, and our model. In the single image classification stage, our model achieved 98.49% accuracy on more than 7996 test images. Early diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is crucial to early treatment and quarantine measures. In this narrative review, diagnostic tools for COVID-19 diagnosis and their main critical issues were reviewed. The COVID-19 real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test is considered the gold standard test for the qualitative and quantitative detection of viral nucleic acid. In contrast, tests can be used for epidemiological surveys on specific communities, including occupational cohorts, but not for clinical diagnosis as a substitute for swab tests. Computed tomography (CT) scans can be useful for the clinical diagnosis of COVID-19, especially in symptomatic cases. The imaging features of COVID-19 are diverse and depend on the stage of infection after the onset of symptoms. CT sensitivity seems to be higher in patients with positive RT-PCR. Conventional chest sensitivity shows a lower sensitivity. An important diagnostic screening tool is ultrasounds, whose specificity and sensitivity depend on disease severity, patient weight, and operator skills. Nevertheless, ultrasounds could be useful as a screening tool in combination with clinical features and molecular testing to monitor disease progression. Purpose: Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has proven to be a diagnostic challenge. Early studies have shown that computed tomography (CT) imaging may be useful in diagnosis of these patients. We aim to report CT findings in a series of hospitalized patients. Material and methods: A total of 81 patients were included in this study. All of the patients were hospitalized and had SARS-CoV-2 infection proven by molecular assay. All patients had a CT scan on the first day of admission. Imaging results were reviewed by two separate radiologists, and imaging findings were documented. Results: Seventy-eight patients had abnormal CT imaging, while 3 had normal CT imaging. The sensitivity of CT in diagnosing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was estimated to be 96%. The most common imaging finding was ground glass opacities, followed by septal thickening. Most lesions were located at the periphery and posterior of the lungs. Most lesions were multifocal, and involved the right lower lobe more frequently. Chest X-rays were normal in 38 patients, and the sensitivity of chest X-ray in diagnosing SARS-Cov-2 was 54%. Conclusions: CT scans could be used in diagnosis of patients with a high sensitivity (93%). Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by a highly contagious novel coronavirus, has seen a rapid surge of cases over the past 6 months spreading to more than 215 countries and posing a global threat to mankind. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from pharyngeal swabs is considered the gold standard for diagnosis of this disease. Portable chest radiography (CXR), point of care ultrasound, and computed tomography (CT) are crucial modalities in diagnosis and follow-up. Portable CXR can help in patients who are clinically unstable, and also to prevent the cumbersome process of steriliastion after every CT scan. However, chest CT is useful as a problem-solving tool, to look for progression and complications associated with the disease. In a few cases, in our experience (as has also been documented by others), RT-PCR was negative in early disease, and CT chest was able to detect the radiological findings raising suspicion of COVID-19. In this work, we discovered a new phenomenon—asymptomatic COVID-19 infection, or covert case, during the pandemic. All the 3 patients had a history of exposure, with no symptoms, and no abnormalities were found in computed tomography scan or lab tests. Except for case 2, the other patients' severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) nucleic acid tests were negative. But their anti-SARS-COV-2 nucleocapsid antibody showed a dynamic trend, consistent with the process of virus infection and clearance. A growing number of asymptomatic or covert cases need more attention. Lack of surveillance may lead to another outbreak. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied in the medical diagnosis of different types of diseases. However, selecting the architecture and the best set of hyperparameters among the possible combinations can be a significant challenge. The purpose of this work is to investigate the use of the Hyperband optimization algorithm in the process of optimizing a CNN applied to the diagnosis of SARS-Cov2 disease (COVID-19). The test was performed with the Optuna framework, and the optimization process aimed to optimize four hyperparameters: (1) backbone architecture, (2) the number of inception modules, (3) the number of neurons in the fully connected layers, and (4) the learning rate. CNNs were trained on 2175 computed tomography (CT) images. The CNN that was proposed by the optimization process was a VGG16 with five inception modules, 128 neurons in the two fully connected layers, and a learning rate of 0.0027. The proposed method achieved a sensitivity, precision, and accuracy of 97%, 82%, and 88%, outperforming the sensitivity of the Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) tests (53–88%) and the accuracy of the diagnosis performed by human experts (72%). The recent COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the world in the last months, leading to a serious global emergency related to a novel coronavirus infection that affects both sexes of all ages ubiquitously. Advanced age, cardiovascular comorbidity, and viral load have been hypothesized as some of the risk factors for severity, but their role in patients affected with other diseases, in particular immune disorders, such as sarcoidosis, and the specific interaction between these two diseases remains unclear. The two conditions might share similar imaging findings but have distinctive features that are here described. Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is currently the most serious infectious disease in the world. An accurate diagnosis of this disease in the clinic is very important. This study aims to improve the differential ability of computed tomography (CT) to diagnose COVID-19 and other community-acquired pneumonias (CAPs) and evaluate the short-term prognosis of these patients. Methods: The clinical and imaging data of 165 COVID-19 and 118 CAP patients diagnosed in seven hospitals in Anhui Province, China from January 21 to February 28, 2020 were retrospectively analysed. The CT manifestations of the two groups were recorded and compared. A correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between COVID-19 and age, size of lung lesions, number of involved lobes, and CT findings of patients. The factors that were helpful in diagnosing the two groups of patients were identified based on specificity and sensitivity. Results: The typical CT findings of COVID-19 are simple ground-glass opacities (GGO), GGO with consolidation or grid-like changes. The sensitivity and specificity of the combination of age, white blood cell count, and ground-glass opacity in the diagnosis of COVID-19 were 92.7 and 66.1%, respectively. Pulmonary consolidation, fibrous cords, and bronchial wall thickening were used as indicators to exclude COVID-19. The sensitivity and specificity of the combination of these findings were 78.0 and 63.6%, respectively. The follow-up results showed that 67.8% (112/165) of COVID-19 patients had abnormal changes in their lung parameters, and the severity of the pulmonary sequelae of patients over 60 years of age worsened with age. Conclusions: Age, white blood cell count and ground-glass opacity have high accuracy in the early diagnosis of COVID-19 and the differential diagnosis from CAP.
