The article reports that at the invitation of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Association for Computing Machinery has recently cosponsored a three-and-one-half day technical conference in Tokyo, in conjunction with Commerce's six-day exhibition of U.S. computer equipment. Computer '70 and the Computer '70 Colloquium, as the show and conference were called, were held at Tokyo's Harumi Pier, from October 12-14, 1970. Over 19,000 members of Japan's data processing community queued up to view at the open admission exhibition the products of 65 U.S. manufacturers. In addition, over 350 persons, most in key managerial and research positions, attended the Colloquium where, to defray expenses, attendance was on a fee basis--about $100 for the full conference and $25 for one day. Also participating in the seven half-day sessions were 27 U.S. computing experts and 10 leading Japanese professionals, whose papers were presented simultaneously in English and Japanese. The timeliness of the topics and the caliber of the participants can be recognized from the program.

The article highlights the 31st annual conference of the Special Interest Group on Graphics (SIGGRAPH) of the Association for Computing Machinery held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California from August 8 to 12, 2004. A couple of decades ago, conference attendees could count on seeing a couple things at SIGGRAPH that had literally never been seen before in human history, such as textured 3D objects or hierarchical human animation. SIGGRAPH 2004's total exhibition area was smaller than the hallowed days of yore, composed mostly of software companies, some boutique specialty hardware outfits, schools, and graphics board manufacturers. Walking the show's exhibit floor provides ample evidence that the industry's major players have changed in recent years. One reason the show floor's smaller is that there's been considerable consolidation in both the hardware and software graphics industries over the last few years. There were several indications this trend is still in full swing. One class of hardware that wasn't in evidence at the show was tablet computers. There's exactly one attendee using a tablet, compared to hundreds of laptops of every size and description. If the SIGGRAPH community's resisted adopting tablets as mobile work devices, one wonders if there's any hope for them in the wider community, at least until they become as thin and light as paper.

This article presents news briefs related to computer industry. A snippet presents information on a recent report on the satellite communications market, which depicts a struggling industry beset by mounting expenses and damaging setbacks. According to "Satellite Communications Services and Equipment Markets, U.S.," an industry report by International Resource Development Inc., a New Canaan, Connecticut-based market research firm, satellite communication service vendors are currently reviewing their options to determine if the commercial market has a future. Most noted among the series of repeated setbacks the industry has endured is the loss of numerous satellites during launch, which has escalated insurance premiums to 20 percent or more in construction costs. Another snippet reports that an international conference on the subject of "Women, Work and Computerization" will be held in Amsterdam on April 27-29, 1988. The conference is being organized by IFIP's Technical Committee on the Relationship Between Computers and Society and will explore the conditions under which computers can open up career prospects for women.

This article presents several news items related to the computer industry. A Seminar Mission sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce will visit New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Bombay, India, from April 19 to 27, 1982, and will feature computers and peripherals. India has accelerated its rate of imports of computers, with the U.S. share amounting to 80 percent. Demand is expected to triple by 1986, when total imports are estimated to reach $120 million yearly. The Computers in Education Division (CoED) of the American Society for Engineering Education publishes Application Notes bi-monthly. CoED is issuing a Call for Notes dealing with analog, hybrid, or digital engineering problems. Of particular interest are articles dealing with programmable calculators and microprocessors. "The Changing Role of the Computer Consultant" has been chosen as the theme for the 1982 Annual Conference of the Independent Computer Consultants Association, to be held during May 5-8, 1982, in Arlington, Virginia. The conference will feature presentations on how future changes in computer technology, the legal environment, government regulation, and economic trends could impact the role of the independent consultant and the relationship between consultant and client.
