The article discusses the results of a global Internet survey of scientists on their use of computers and software. The demographics of the respondents are noted, as are findings of trends in the time spent by scientists in developing software and using it. The authors note that data-archiving habits were not surveyed. The survey results illustrated that scientists conduct a considerable amount of solo work or they work in small teams. Regarding computer hardware, the survey indicated a preponderance of desktop computer use and limited reliance on supercomputers.
