A coplanar waveguide fed metamaterial antenna based on two-unit cell composite right/left handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) loaded with resonating rings is presented. The bandwidth is enhanced by merging the zeroth-order resonance and first positive-order resonance of CRLH-TL with two additional resonances due to resonating rings. The measured results show a - 10 dB fractional bandwidth of 71.11% (2.9-6.1 GHz) with realised gains of 2.35, 3.2, 3.75 and 3.6 dBi at the resonant frequencies 3.4, 4.3, 5.3 and 5.7 GHz, respectively. The peak realised gain is found to be 4.5 dBi at 4.9 GHz. The simulated radiation efficiency is >61% for the entire band of operation with a peak value of 88.75%. A good agreement is found between measured and simulated results. The proposed antenna is suitable for WiMAX (3.3-3.8 GHz) and WLAN (5.15-5.85 GHz) applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
