This paper investigates whether leadership style moderates the effect of leader incentives on the performance of teams. In collaboration with a Latin-American bank, we engineered a field experiment by designing a series of contests among the bank branches with varying prize structures. We find evidence that providing explicit incentives to team leaders has a positive effect on team performance. However, the effect of incentives differs based on the manager's leadership style and team characteristics. Leader incentives are less effective for managers who inspire their team by appealing to higher values than for managers who motivate performance through rewards and penalties. Human rights language has become a common method of internationally denouncing violent, discriminatory or otherwise harmful practices, notably by framing them as reprehensible violations of those fundamental rights we obtain by virtue of being human. While often effective, such women's rights discourse becomes delicate when used to challenge practices, which are of important cultural significance to the communities in which they are practiced. This paper analyses human rights language to challenge the gender disparity in access to health care and in overall health outcomes in certain countries where such disparities are influenced by important cultural values and practices. This paper will provide selected examples of machismo and marianismo discourses in certain Latin American countries on the one hand and of female genital cutting/excision (FGC/E) in practicing countries, both of which exposed to women's rights language, notably for causing violations of women's right to health. In essence, a reflective exercise is provided here with the argument that framing such discourses and practices as women's rights violations. Calling for their abandonment have shown that it may not only be ineffective nor at times appropriate, it also risks delegitimizing associated discourses, norms and practices thereby enhancing criticisms of the women's rights movement rather than adopting its principles. A sensitive community-based collaborative approach aimed at understanding and building cultural discourses to one, which promotes women's capabilities and health, is proposed as a more effective means at bridging cultural and gender gaps.

The article presents information on the preliminary program of the thirty-ninth annual meeting of the American Sociological Society. The meeting of the Executive Committee of the American Sociological Society will be held in the evening of December 29, 1944, while the registration will be allowed only in the morning of December 29, 1944. In conjunction with the American Anthropological Society. Dean Robert R. Redfield, University of Chicago, President of the American Anthropological Association is presiding over the meeting. The general topic of the meeting is "Culture of the Masses and Classes in Latin America." The following people are expected to write about the information- Eliseo Vivas, Carl C. Taylor and Sol Tax. The various discussion leaders will be announced then and there. Finally, the meeting of the executive committee will be held on December 30, 1944 at around 4:30 p.m. The programs and the respective papers will be announced there itself.

The article presents the author's work on documentation of certain traits of the rural Latin American culture. This documentation is necessarily preliminary. For the reason that modern Latin American communities have not been subject to anthropological study on a large scale and the number of sources is therefore limited. Also, this article is intended more as a demonstration of a type of work which may be carried on intensively for the purpose of analyzing the content and organization of what is postulated as a new and emergent culture throughout Latin America. This study will be limited to the rural phase of culture. And, it is stressed that this paper represents a tentative study that cannot in any way be considered complete. The Latin American community is almost invariably situated about a central plaza. Facing this plaza are the church, the government buildings, and the homes of the more prominent members of the community. The basic land unit in rural communities is a small plot usually having irregular boundaries. These are generally individually owned and also are worked by their owners. The existence of ceremonial kinship is common to most all groups. In some areas it is more highly developed than in others. As far as the religious organizations are concerned, each community has its own group of images representing various saints. Each saint has special powers that cover some particular field of needs. Furthermore, this study is pushed further many elements of acculturation process, culture development, and the psychology of culture.

This paper presents the concept of the systematisation of praxis and an operational approach to the systematisation of alternative consulting experiences. The essences of this approach have been developed in Latin America after many years of experiences with both popular urban and rural sectors. Taking departure from a concrete example we outline some of the central questions that ought to be discussed during the systematisation process. A real-life case study is proposed: the systematisation of the activities of a development centre in Odsherred, Denmark, to redesign strategies and to recreate actions for the centre's future activities. The mental health burden associated with anti-immigrant rhetoric and ever-changing immigration policies is undeniable, though the psychological and emotional sequalae may remain invisible for years to come. Exclusionary immigration policies, as a form of structural racism, have also led to an epidemic of stress-related health within the Latinx community, particularly the Latinx immigrant community, across the United States. Recent examples of anti-Latinx and anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies include the 45th President's implementation of the Zero Tolerance policy, Migrant Protection Protocols, and Title 42. The recognition of previous and existing anti-immigrant policies, and the impact on Latinx immigrants, is critical in understanding the manifestation of psychological stress to prevent it from becoming chronic. For mental health providers, attention to existing policies that can be detrimental to the Latinx immigrant community is essential to understanding their mental health trajectory and applying frameworks that honor an individual's psychological stress to prevent pathologizing the immigrant experience and negative health outcomes. The objective of the present brief review is to shed light on recent research and offer recommendations for practice (eg, educating the Latinx community about the link between the immigrant experience and psychological stress) and policy (eg, drafting of legislation aimed at rescinding harmful immigration policies) regarding the relation between aggressive anti-immigration rhetoric and psychological stress among Latinx immigrants in the United States. Leo S. Rowe, before becoming director of the Pan-American Union, came to Argentina to gather information, connect with local intellectuals, and disseminate the basic ideas of an emerging inter-American system of cultural and intellectual cooperation that would be the backbone of Pan-Americanism. This paper deals with the interaction and communication between the Hemispheric Intellectual-Statesman and its local counterparts, focusing on the dynamic of the imperial hegemonic process. Argentine intellectuals failed to accept Rowe's progressive ideas about modern corporations, government by public opinion, and social reform. But they were quite ready to entertain ideas of inter-American cooperation with the powerful Northern Neighbor, vindicating at the same time their affinity with and belonging to "European culture". The article addresses problems of disjunction in pre-Columbian scholarship. According to the author, students of pre-Columbian art and culture are exposed to George Kubler's seminal paper on the relationships between form and meaning in the native arts of Latin America. Classical Antiquity was the standard by which to rate an art style or culture as worthy of study. Based on the article, the Maya were particularly favored as the most brilliant culture of the pre-Columbian world. Monica Barnes notes that there has been a deliberate attempt to claim that the Inca Empire began at about the time of John the Baptist and lasted until the Spanish Conquest, based on a discussion of the development of portraying Inca kings in viceregal Peru.

Abstract: Indigenous Peoples in Latin America bear a disproportionate burden of undernutrition, yet traditional foods, including wild leafy greens, can contribute nutritional value to diets. As part of a community nutrition intervention using local foods in highland Tungurahua, Ecuador, mothers' groups promoted the consumption of wild leafy greens through community cooking clubs and recipe competitions at local fairs. The objective was to assess the social, cultural, and nutritional potential of a mothers' club intervention that promoted 2 indigenous greens (stinging nettle/Urtica dioica L. and round‐leaved dock/Rumex obtusifolius L.) into children's diets. Key informant interviews and focus groups were conducted with 54 mothers and 16 elders to identify perceptions of the intervention and traditional foods. Social and cultural dimensions were identified through content analysis. The nutritional contribution of the leafy greens was estimated through semiquantitative food frequency questionnaires conducted with 160 participant mothers and 98 mothers living in comparison communities who had not been exposed to the intervention. The use of local foods generated pride for mothers and elders. Nonfood uses of the nettle proved an initial barrier to acceptance; however, peer support within mothers' groups enabled increased consumption. The greens were estimated to contribute an additional 8% vitamin A, 7% iron, 12% vitamin C, and 27% folate to children's recommended dietary intakes. By promoting wild leafy greens, mothers' groups improved food security and the cultural and nutritional value of their diets. Additionally, mothers' cooking clubs increased self‐efficacy and cultural identity for Quichua women, offering a highly acceptable nutrition intervention model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Up to one half of the population in Africa, Asia and Latin America has little access to high-quality biomedical services and relies on traditional health systems. Medical pluralism is thus in many developing countries the rule rather than the exception, which is why the World Health Organization is calling for intercultural partnerships to improve health care in these regions. They are, however, challenging due to disparate knowledge systems and lack of trust that hamper understanding and collaboration. We developed a collaborative, patient-centered boundary mechanism to overcome these challenges and to foster intercultural partnerships in health care. To assess its impact on the quality of intercultural patient care in a medically pluralistic developing country, we conducted and evaluated a case study. Methods: The case study took place in Guatemala, since previous efforts to initiate intercultural medical partnerships in this country were hampered by intense historical and societal conflicts. It was designed by a team from ETH Zurich's Transdisciplinarity Lab, the National Cancer Institute of Guatemala, two traditional Councils of Elders and 25 Mayan healers from the Kaqchikel and Q'eqchi' linguistic groups. It was implemented from January 2014 to July 2015. Scientists and traditional political authorities collaborated to facilitate workshops, comparative diagnoses and patient referrals, which were conducted jointly by biomedical and traditional practitioners. The traditional medical practices were thoroughly documented, as were the health-seeking pathways of patients, and the overall impact was evaluated. Results: The boundary mechanism was successful in discerning barriers of access for indigenous patients in the biomedical health system, and in building trust between doctors and healers. Learning outcomes included a reduction of stereotypical attitudes towards traditional healers, improved biomedical procedures due to enhanced self-reflection of doctors, and improved traditional health care due to refined diagnoses and adapted treatment strategies. In individual cases, the beneficial effects of traditional treatments were remarkable, and the doctors continued to collaborate with healers after the study was completed. Comparison of the two linguistic groups illustrated that the outcomes are highly context-dependent. Conclusions: If well adapted to local context, patient-centered boundary mechanisms can enable intercultural partnerships by creating access, building trust and fostering mutual learning, even in circumstances as complex as those in Guatemala. Background: The perinatal period, i.e. pregnancy, childbirth and early infancy, is a significant transition period where the biological and the social strongly intersect. In low and middle-income countries the disease burden arising from the perinatal period, is still substantial. The perinatal period is also a crucial window of opportunity for reducing undernutrition and its long term adverse effects.Methods: We explored qualitative research conducted in low resource settings around the perinatal continuum over the past two decades, with a particular focus on the 'cultural' realm, to identify common themes influencing maternal and infant nutrition. We systematically searched electronic databases from 1990 to 2014, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Scopus and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, using relevant search terms including traditional beliefs, practices, pregnancy, childbirth, developing countries etc. Adapted Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Health Research and Critical Appraisal Skills Programme criteria were used to determine quality of studies. We synthesised the literature thematically, enabled by NVivo 10 software.Results: Most studies showed cultural support for breastfeeding, although most traditional societies delayed breastfeeding due to colostrum being considered 'dirty'. A range of restrictive practices through pregnancy and the post- partum period were revealed in Asia, Latin America and Africa. There was a strong cultural understanding of the healing power of everyday foods. A wide range of good foods and bad foods continued to have currency through the perinatal continuum, with little consensus between groups of what was beneficial versus harmful. Cross-cutting themes that emerged were 1) the role of the woman/mother/wife as strong and good; 2) poverty restricting women's nutrition choices; 3) change being constant, but the direction of change unpredictable.Conclusions: A rich and diverse repertoire of cultural practices and beliefs influenced perinatal nutrition. Results from this synthesis should influence public health policymakers and practitioners, to tailor contextually specific, culturally responsive perinatal nutrition interventions to optimise health and wellbeing of mother-infant dyads. Ideally these interventions should build on culturally sanctioned life affirming behaviours such as breastfeeding, promoting post-partum rest and recovery, while modifying the potentially harmful aspects of other cultural practices in the perinatal period. This article analyses the Weimar Republic's cultural relations with Latin America. Based on diplomatic correspondence and the writings of Latin American intellectuals who visited Weimar Germany, the article combines an exploration of the goals and methods of Germany's official foreign cultural policy towards the region with a brief examination of the varied ways in which the supposed recipients of these policies approached German culture. The key argument is that the limited capacities of official cultural policy created space for a large number of actors who pursued divergent interests when appropriating or trying to spread German ideas in Latin America. The article discusses globalization and literary history. Latin America is a social democracy where marginalized and culturally different groups are bonded in a common culture by admitting indigenous and local elements into the national culture. The effects of globalization on national literature came with the expansion of entertainment industry and the resulting devaluation of cultural literacy.

This study examined whether national culture directly moderates the link between buyer-seller relationship strength and repurchase intentions in industrial markets, as well as indirectly moderates the same link through its influence on corporate culture. Hypotheses were tested using a mail survey among industrial buyers in the United States and Latin America. Results based on 126 responses from Latin American firms and 81 responses from U.S. firms showed that national culture and corporate culture moderate the relationship-repurchase link and that national culture is associated with corporate culture. Using national culture index scores computed from administering Hofstede's Value Survey Module 94, the authors further show that uncertainty avoidance is the primary driver of national culture's influence on this link and that power distance is most directly associated with corporate culture. Review of a recent book on the Congress for Cultural Freedom by British author and documentary filmmaker Frances Stonor Saunders, Who Paid the Piper? The CIA and the Cultural Cold War (London: Granta, 1999), leads into an examination of the cold war ideological contest in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. Particular attention is given to the Americas and U.S. efforts to manipulate the social sciences as instruments of hemispheric control. The article discusses that little effort has been made to formulate alternative models deliberately sensitive to the unique political, social, cultural, and economic developments in Latin America. The article is divided into two main sections. In the first, author examines and accounts for an intellectual gridlock in the study of Latin American social movements. In the second, author seeks to transcend the stalemate by proposing a new theoretical framework built around the concept of distance or, better said, citizens distance from the state, understood geographically, institutionally, and in terms of class and culture. The author discusses each of these four dimensions of distance and the overlaps between them, offer an explanation for how and why aggregate patterns of distance vary the way they do, and finally, theorize the "power" of distance, which can better explain social movement activity in Latin America, even as it dispenses with counterproductive dichotomization of political opportunity structure and new social movement paradigms.

The article examines the internal and external factors in the development of Jewish communities in Latin America. The Jews in this region form one of the largest concentrations of Jews in the world. The lack of an accepted juridical or cultural definition of minority groups in Latin American countries has created difficulties. This community has created the first social frameworks which were committed to aiding new immigrants and fostering the continuity of Jewish life. Several issues created a problem within such communities including the weakening of Jewish identity which creates doubts about the survival of the Jews as a distinct cultural group.

The article presents a cross-cultural study of stereotypes of American and Latin American students. It compares the authentic views of one cultural group with the authentic views of the other using a Chi square routine. It also differentiates the projected stereotypes response of the first group with the authentic views of the second group. The findings show that the American stereotype predictions of how the Latinos would respond to the statements were much more accurate than the Latino predictions of how the Americans would respond. There is also a gap between the Latino-held stereotype and the American reality. It indicates that two cultural groups can share common views on a problematic situation.

Students of the Brazilian family are very likely to be impressed by a rather unusual flair, which some sociologists have shown for historical reconstructions. As seen in retrospect, especially against the colonial background, the family stands out sharply as a patriarchal, extended, and essentially rural structure of towering dominance. This picture still holds it own during the first half of the nineteenth century, yet becomes somewhat indistinct at the time of the grandfathers and gradually fades away as one approaches the present time. This means that the object of much historical research, the patriarchal family of the landed aristocracy, vanished, but the sociologists' interest in its succeeding forms as well. The Brazilian system, as that of Latin America in general, is largely family-ridden. There is probably not a single major institution in Brazil, which is not to a considerable extent controlled or deflected by family interests. It is true that in areas of heavy foreign immigration, the position of family oligarchies was not strong enough to prevent the rise of a new economic and political elite, but it also is true that the new elite has adopted the same patterns of familism and nepotism which characterized the traditional power structure.

This article explores the Latin American way of life. In Latin America, the elements of material culture are markedly different but many attributes of the Latin American cultural scheme are difficult to define. There is one all-pervading religious institution which embraces high and low in its spiritual fold. There are no sects or schisms. Public and private morality varies little from one end to the other of the whole area. And there is a distinct concept of the tempo of life and the use of leisure. The whole philosophy of living, as regards family, laws, mores, folkways, personal dignity, and similar notions, differs as has been seen from that in Anglo-Saxon America. There even seems to be an intangible aura, a distinct flavor, to living in Latin America, a certain quality of light and color in the atmosphere. And all these factors add up to a special civilization with its own forceful personality. Latin American nations are tied to each other by history and culture more than they are separated by physical geography. What makes for unity in the vast mosaic of Latin American States, with their race mixture and great diversity in climates and physical geography, is the Latin American culture with its cohesive force of well-defined values. The conclusion that there is a Latin American way of life seems inescapable.
