During the air travel, the author came across some interesting products in Southwest's October issue of SPIRIT magazine, which was featuring a list of travel goodies. The author liked Targus's latest Universal ac/dc Notebook Power Adapter that works with PDAs, cellphones, MP3 players, digital cameras and-- laptops, and takes power from wall plugs or car outlets with equal zeal. Even more interesting was the Sidewinder, a Zippo-lighter-sized, hand-cranked generator for putting power back into one's cellphone.

Genoa Color Technologies previewed the world's first five-primary color LCD television, a 17-inch model straight from the fabrication, while the display had manufacturing defects, it certainly had a higher color range than the standard 17-inch LCD television next to it. Aura Communications was demonstrating the LibertyLink magnetic communications custom chip. Other big news on the automotive front was the announcement by DirecTV of its new Total Choice Mobile programming package, targeted at passenger vehicles, with in-vehicle video screens and KVH's TracVision A5 low-profile automotive satillite television antenna.

For the first time, a Foveon sensor is going into a consumer level camera, the x530, to be built by Polaroid. The sensor for the x530 has three 1.5 megapixel color layers. Released in late 2003, Sigma put the larger scale 3.4 megapixel sensor into their digital SLR, the SD10, which can be bought with Sigma's 18-50 mm f/3.5-5.6 DC and 55-200 mm f/4-5.6 DC Lenses for a street price of $1599, or by itself for $1349. Announced in August of 2003, Sony was the first company out with a camera using its 8 megapixel sensor. Sony had included a Compact Flash slot in the camera, indicating that they intended it to provide a crossover from amateur to professional. The 8700 digital camera from Nikon uses the sensor, which won its price category for best picture in the digital camera shootout convention. Canon's updated 1D II drew a lot of interest. In response to D2H from Nikon, Canon gives its 1D II an 8 megapixel sensor and 8 FPS shooting rate with a list price of $4499 and April availability. Casio released a 6 megapixel version, the Exilim Pro EX-P600. It features a 2-second startup time, a 2-inch viewfinder, 4x Canon optical zoom, and SD memory.

Apart from Canon's complementary metal oxide semiconductor sensors and Fuji's "magic pixel" designs, the image sensor business is fairly homogeneous. Foveon's three layer sensors offer a real challenge to traditional sensors that use color filters over one layer of pixels. Like color film, they use different layers for different colors, taking advantage of the light absorption properties of silicon that allow different wavelengths to pass to different depths. Announced in August of 2003, Sony was the first company out with a camera using its 8 megapixel sensor. Rather than simply use the extra pixels for enhanced resolution, they opted to add a fourth color filter to the mask that goes over the sensor. Nikon's D70, its replacement for the D100, is priced to compete with the Digital Rebel and to undercut the Canon 10D. The D70 has a 3 frame per second (FPS) buffer that takes advantage of lower resolutions to speed up processing and an impressive degree of flash control that works with the camera's pop-up flash. Every camera and printer manufacturer booth had big blowups of pictures taken by professional photographers with their cameras lining the walls.

Having seen the industry allegedly scramble to convince buyers that products which already work better than their film counterparts need improvement, and that users need to upgrade for improvements, it turns out that such trends are both right. Apart from the complementary metal oxide semiconductor sensors from Canon and the magic pixel designs from Fuji, the image sensor business is apparently fairly homogenous. Despite this, Foveon is an exception. And though it is a pity that the company does not manufacture a high-resolution product, their three-layer sensors offer a real challenge to traditional sensors that use color filters over one layer of pixels.
