Most of the 60 former East German universities have been reorganized into institutions which reflect western-style educational programs and teaching. Enrollment has risen and schools may experience overcrowding in five years time as enrollment goals are achieved. The process has been costly. West German institutions have borne the brunt of the financing costs and lawsuits filed by many of the over 20,000 professors who lost their jobs are still pending.
