In this paper, a complete flux scheme (CFS) has been implemented in 1-D fluid model for simulating the pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in pure argon at atmospheric pressure. The characteristic quantities of the pulsed DBD have been systematically calculated by using the CFS and presented in comparison with those by using the exponential difference scheme (EDS). This paper shows the following results. There is the two-pulse discharge mode in the present simulation. The two discharge currents obtained using the CFS and EDS converge to the same result in good agreement with the experiment as spatial step length decreases, but the CFS has a fast convergence performance compared to the EDS. With a small grid number, the numerical scheme has an evident effect on the characteristic quantities in the time region corresponding to the first discharge pulse. This paper suggests that in the pulsed DBD, the usage of the CFS with a properly small grid number can give more accurate result and also presents a high calculation efficiency. On transmission lines where switching surges are not mitigated with closing resistors and/or surge arresters, high-speed reclosing on a line with trapped charge will produce high overvoltages that have been measured above 3 p.u. Careful simulations of these switching events using available electromagnetic transient (EMT) programs consistently produce significantly higher voltages than the measurements. This indicates a phenomenon present on the line that acts to reduce the switching surge magnitudes but is not typically modeled. This paper aims to identify the required simulation practices in reproducing the field measured overvoltages in EMT simulations and investigates the sensitivity of results to modeling approaches and electrical parameters. Field measurements from a switching surge test of a 230-kV line without surge mitigation have been used for model comparisons. Variations in frequency-dependent line modeling, ground resistivity, skin effect, shunt conductance, parallel lines, and source-side detail have been tested in an unsuccessful attempt to decrease the difference between the field measurements and the higher simulation overvoltages. It is demonstrated that even though the pattern of the transient voltage waveforms can be reproduced very well using frequency-dependent line models, the magnitude of the maximum overvoltage is significantly overestimated unless the effect of corona is considered. Two types of corona models are tested, and both demonstrate that corona is the primary factor that allows the simulations to correctly reproduce high peak overvoltage measurements. This paper proposes an analytical threshold voltage model for the dielectric pocket double gate (DP-DG) junctionless FETs (JLFETs). The channel potential function has been obtained by solving 2-D Poisson’s equation using an evanescent mode analysis with suitable boundary conditions. The potential function has then been used for modeling the threshold voltage to investigate the effects of the DP thickness and length on the short-channel effects of the structure. The effects of source and drain depletion regions have been included for improving the accuracy of the model. A comprehensive time series power flow (TSPF) framework is proposed for the analysis of fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR). TSPF bridges the gap between static power flow simulations and time-domain simulations for FIDVR analysis. FIDVR events can be simulated faster with TSPF, while transient simulations normally require much longer time. In the TSPF framework, a random model for the disconnection of the induction motors is proposed to determine the load for different “snapshots” during FIDVR events. Regression analysis is used to predict the parameters needed in the simulations. There is no need to simplify the network topology or aggregate loads into clusters as in measurement-based load modeling approaches. The techniques presented in this paper successfully reproduced two FIDVR events recorded in heavily meshed distribution networks in New York City in 2010 and 2015. The field-plate (FP) technique suppresses the electric field crowding at the p-n junction by inducing the interface charges in the drift region. However, due to the modeling difficulty, the physical meaning cannot be elaborated via the conventional 2-D methods, not to mention the designing optimization. Therefore, the FP assistant reduced surface field effective concentration profile (ECP) is proposed in this paper to explore the physical insight of the FP assistant 2-D coupling. The ECP simplifies the sophisticated 2-D coupling by equating the FP assistant effect to the variation of the ECP. As a result, a simple and effective 1-D analytical model is presented to qualitatively and quantitatively explore the FP-induced surface field reshaping and its distinctive breakdown mechanism. In this paper, a new continuous multilevel compact model for phase-change memory (PCM) is proposed. It is based on the modified rate equations with the introduction of a variable related to material melting. The model is evaluated using a large set of dynamic measurements and shows a good accuracy with a single model card. All fitting parameters are discussed, and their impacts are detailed. Conventional finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) applies single voltage vector within each control period. This leads to relatively high steady-state ripples and requires fast sampling rate. Additionally, enumeration-based optimal vector selection is computationally intensive. Recently, double-vector-based schemes have been proposed to improve the steady-state performance of FCS-MPC. However, they are usually complicated in vector selection and duty ratio calculation. In this paper, a universal multiple-vector-based MPC (UMV-MPC) is proposed, which achieves the same performance as the state-of-the-art double-vector-based MPC, but executes in a much more efficient and universal way. Unlike conventional FCS-MPC, enumerating process and state predictions for candidate voltage vectors are not required in the proposed UMV-MPC to select the best voltage vectors. In UMV-MPC, the optimal vectors and duty ratios are directly constructed from deadbeat control (DBC) based on space vector modulation (SVM), which is easy to follow and quick to use. The proposed UMV-MPC is not only more efficient than prior methods, but also reveals the inherent relationship between double-vector-based MPC and DBC with SVM. A comparative study of UMV-MPC and prior double-vector-based MPC is carried out in this paper. This paper presents the interaction between the overhead transmission lines (OHTLs) and their towers. In this paper, the electric field around the tower of the overhead transmission lines is calculated. The charge simulation method, combined with the image method, is used to develop a model that consists of subconductors of the OHTLs and the tower. The charges on the surface of each subconductor of the overhead transmission lines are simulated by a set of infinite line charges, of various charge densities, along the length of the subconductor, and the induced charges on the surface of the tower are simulated by a set of finite line charges. In this paper, subthreshold channel potential, current, swing, threshold voltage, and drain-induced barrier lowering models of short-channel tri-gate junctionless field-effect transistors are presented. The models incorporate the effects of both substrate-induced surface potential and variable edges of channel. The quasi-3-D approach is used for the modeling of minimum of channel potential that is subsequently used in the drift–diffusion equation to obtain the current expression in subthreshold regime. Threshold voltage and subthreshold swing models are also based on the minimum of channel potential. Circulating current can be decomposed into double line-frequency positive-, negative- and zero-sequence components under unbalanced voltage conditions. First, in order to decrease peak/rms value of arm current, double line-frequency circulating current should be eliminated. Second, ac-side current that consists of positive- and negative-sequence components under unbalanced voltage conditions should be regulated to track the reference signal. Furthermore, fundamental frequency circulating current caused by asymmetry of the upper and lower arm should be also removed. To effectively control ac-side current and eliminate all circulating currents, an arm current control strategy based on a decoupler and proportional-integral controller plus the vector proportional integral (VPI) controller is proposed in this paper. The proposed control strategy works well under balanced and unbalanced voltage conditions as well as asymmetry of the upper and lower arm. In addition, this paper proposes a design procedure for the VPI controller to reduce the uncertainty of this process. Traditional current control methods for a single-phase rectifier in an electric traction drive system suffer from either long response time or nonzero steady-state error. A novel current vector control strategy in stationary-frame is therefore proposed, in this paper, to improve the control performance of a rectifier. The mathematic model of the single-phase two-level pulse rectifier was first analyzed by complex space vector. Then, the principle of the proposed current control method was described. Based on this, the implementation and parameter tuning method of the current control algorithm based on a space complex vector in a two-phase stationary coordinate system are presented. Moreover, two kinds of general current control algorithms are analyzed and compared with the proposed algorithm to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithm. The proposed control scheme absorbs advantages of the conventional control schemes, including fast response, zero steady-state error, and active and reactive power independent control, but overcomes their shortcomings. Finally, the theoretical analysis is verified by means of simulation as well as a hardware-in-loop experimental test on an experimental laboratory setup and some comparisons with conventional current control algorithms prove the advantages of the utilized method. This paper presents a quasi-static surface-based partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) model for electromagnetic problems consisting of coupled conductors and heterogeneous dielectrics of finite size. The PEEC model is based on the surface equivalent principle. Unlike the traditional surface-based PEEC models, in which the integral equations are set up by enforcing the field continuity in the true field region, the homogeneous integral equations in this model are obtained by enforcing the tangential null field condition in the null field regions. Simplified integral equations are obtained under the quasi-static assumption, in which the circuit elements carrying electric currents and magnetic charges on the dielectric surfaces are vanished. Consequently, the size of the subcircuit describing dielectrics is reduced significantly compared to the full-wave surface-PEEC (S-PEEC) model. Since the quasi-static S-PEEC model only contains frequency-independent circuit elements, it can be conveniently used for time-domain simulation. Three numerical examples are presented to validate the new PEEC model for typical embedded RF passive components, packaging and interconnection problems in both the frequency domain and the time domain. A generalized formulation of earth-return impedance and admittance for underground cables is proposed based on a complete solution of Maxwell equations. The frequency responses of wave propagation characteristics are evaluated by the newly derived formulas and compared to those found from existing formulas in software used for the simulation of electromagnetic transients. Surge simulation results with the proposed formulas show more damping and smooth convergence to steady state in comparison with those with existing formulas. The proposed formulas are validated with a field test on a 110-kV cross-bonded cable. In this paper, analytical expressions for waveforms and design relationships are derived for the class-E power amplifier with the MOSFET nonlinear drain-to-source parasitic capacitance under the subnominal operation, i.e., only zero-voltage switching (ZVS) condition, for any grading coefficient m of the MOSFET body junction diode and 50% duty ratio. Only the MOSFET nonlinear drain-to-source parasitic capacitance is used for the analysis of the class-E ZVS power amplifier, and its nonlinearity is determined by the grading coefficient m. The switch voltage waveform does not satisfy the class-E ZVS switching condition when only the linear shunt capacitance is considered. The grading coefficient m is used as an adjustment parameter that provides accurate design to satisfy the given output power and peak switch voltage simultaneously. Therefore, the grading coefficient m is the important parameter to satisfy the class-E ZVS condition and given design specifications, which is the most important result in this paper. Additionally, the output power capability and maximum operating frequency are affected by the grading coefficient m. The analytical expressions are obtained by considering the grading coefficient m as an adjustment parameter, which is validated by PSpice simulations and laboratory experiments. The measurement and PSpice simulation results agreed with the analytical expressions quantitatively, which denotes the usefulness and effectiveness of our obtained analytical expressions. It is observed that nanosecond pulsed electric field induces extracellular calcium inflow, which suggests great potential in manipulating cell functions. In this paper, a mathematical model of calcium transmembrane transport is set up to make a systematic research of calcium transport through voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) in response to electrical pulses. The particle-in-cell simulation method is employed to simulate the transport process and obtain calcium concentration at any time. The simulation results show that nanosecond electric pulse can activate low VGCCs during the radiation period. Besides, the results reveal the nonlinear relation of the increment in intracellular calcium concentration caused by activation of VGCCs to pulse widths and field intensities. In spite of the wide improvement in computer simulation packages, analyzing, and optimizing the simulation model, particularly under uncertainty can still be computationally expensive and time-consuming. This paper aims to tackle these features by proposing a comprehensive methodology applied to black-box stochastic simulation models under uncertainty. For this purpose, the common surrogate model as Kriging metamodel is served to fit the simulation input–output data produced by Latin hypercube sampling experimental design. Taguchi terminology of robust design enables the optimization methods to control uncertainty and uncontrollable environmental factors. So as to formulate robust counterpart optimization, three different models in the class of dual-response surface are integrated with metamodel and robust design. Leave-one-out cross-validation is applied to validate the Kriging metamodel. Finally, a numerical case study as a direct speed control of dc motor under uncertainty is served to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method in real engineering problems. The U-V or V-V winding connections of two single-phase distribution transformers are widely utilized in distribution systems to deliver power to various three-phase and/or single-phase loads. Such special winding connections of distribution transformers can cause three-phase voltage unbalance in distributions systems, which could also lead to unexpected trip of ground relay, extra power losses on distribution-system lines, reduced operating efficiency of induction-motor loads, etc. This paper proposes a distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) to effectively improve the voltage unbalance of a distribution system connected with a microgrid system. The studied microgrid system contains various renewable-energy resources, a diesel-engine generator, and three distribution transformers with U-V and/or V-V winding connections. The simulation results show that the proposed D-STATCOM with the designed controller can effectively reduce voltage unbalance of the distribution system connected with the studied microgrid system when the distribution transformers have U-V and/or V-V winding connections. Analog components are fundamental blocks of smart systems, as they allow a tight interaction with the environment, in terms of both sensing/actuation and communication. This impacts on the design of the overall system, and mainly on the validation phase, that thus requires the joint simulation of digital and analog aspects. In this scenario, this paper proposes the automatic conversion of analog models to C++-based languages, to remove the overhead of co-simulation with traditional virtual platform tools. The proposed methodology allows to convert a given analog description to either: 1) a fully equivalent description or 2) an abstract representation for faster simulation which models only the aspects of interest. As penetration of distributed generation increases, the electrical distribution networks may encounter several challenges mainly related to voltage control. The situation may deteriorate in case of a weak grid connected to an intermittent source such as photovoltaic (PV) generation. Fast varying solar irradiance can cause unacceptable voltage variations that may not be easily compensated by slow-responding utility equipment. The PV inverter can be used to control the grid voltage by injecting/absorbing reactive power. A small-signal model is derived in order to study the stability of a PV inverter exchanging reactive power with the grid. This paper also proposes a method that utilizes the available capacity of the PV inverter to support the grid voltage without violating the rating of the inverter and the maximum voltage that the inverter's switching device can withstand. In this paper, average modeling and analysis of a dual-supercapacitor bank, actively balanced by a bidirectional buck–boost converter, is presented. In such a system, natural balancing is achieved when the converter is operated in open loop with 50% duty cycle, eliminating the need for measuring the voltage of each storage device. Nevertheless, excessive currents arise even for slight voltage misbalance because of the highly underdamped nature of the system. In order to remedy this drawback, bidirectional pulse-by-pulse inductor current limitation is introduced, which is equivalent to adding a peak-current-mode-like control loop to the system. Since the duty cycle never exceeds 50%, compensation ramp is not required to maintain stability. On the other hand, while the uncontrolled system dynamics is linear, introducing the current limit mechanism turns the closed-loop dynamics into a nonlinear one, burdening the analysis task and thus calling for suitable average model to perform fast simulations for system analysis. Therefore, dynamical equations of the system are developed in order to derive the switching-cycle-averaged model and reveal the tradeoff between current limit level, balancing time and efficiency for the worst case of imbalance. The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is normally controlled with stator-flux orientation. The DFIG is a poorly damped system with a natural frequency near the grid frequency. This leads to natural oscillations on the stator flux and on other variables. When voltage dips occur, there are oscillations on the stator flux that produces electromotive forces and consequently disturbances on the rotor currents. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the DFIG during voltage dips. The method presented in this paper, valid for symmetric and for asymmetric voltage dips, is based on the classical model of the induction machine with stator flux orientation and neglects only a small part of the cross-coupling terms. The response depends on the design methodology of the proportional-integral inner controllers. Analytical, simulation, and experimental results are shown. Multiphase (more than three phases) power electronic converters are required mainly for feeding variable-speed multiphase drive systems. This paper presents one such solution by using a direct ac–ac converter that can be used to supply a nine-phase drive system. The input is a fixed-voltage and fixedfrequency three-phase input, and the output is a variable-voltage and variable-frequency nine-phase output. A simple pulsewidthmodulation technique is developed for the proposed ac–ac converter named as a nonsquare three-to-nine-phase matrixconverter configuration. The developed modulation technique is based on the comparison of a high-frequency carrier signal with the duty ratios. Although the carrier-based scheme is widely employed for the control of back-to-back converters, it has recently been used for controlling a three-to-three-phase matrix converter. This concept is extended in this paper for controlling a threeto-nine-phase matrix converter. With the two techniques that are proposed, one outputs 0.75 of the input magnitude and the other outputs reach 0.762 of the input. This is the maximum value of the output voltage in the linear modulation range that can be achieved in this configuration of the matrix converter. This paper presents an improved semitheoretical fluorescent lamp model by including the effect of the lamp tube temperature on the lamp electrical parameters at different dimming levels. The experimental results have verified that the lamp tube temperature is a linear function of the lamp's input power and has significant influence on the lamp's electrical parameters during the dimming process. The comparison on the simulation and measurements shows that the improved lamp model can predict the lamp electrical characteristics accurately in a wide dimming range under both low- and high-frequency operations. This paper studies microgrids where loads are supplied by parallel-connected inverters controlled by decentralized active power/voltage frequency and reactive power-/voltage-magnitude droop control laws. A paralleled ac system, such as a multiinverter microgrid, is susceptible to circulating currents due to differences in voltage magnitude, frequency, phase angle, or dc offset. Circulating currents due to differences in voltage magnitude and dc offset have been known issues reported in literature. However, an in-depth analysis of the problem is required to ascertain the deviation of the system-operating condition from the desired condition. This paper provides a mathematical model that predicts the effect of voltage-magnitude offsets on reactive power sharing between inverters. Simulation and experimental results verify the accuracy of the analytical results obtained from the mathematical model. We examine the effect of dc-circulating currents and propose a simple capacitor emulation control law implemented in software to eliminate dc-circulating currents. This solution is a possible alternative for hardware implementation to eliminate dc-circulating currents. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has attracted extensive research in recent years. An appropriate model is necessary to analyze stability or to design MMC controllers. Several published MMC models have been derived in single-phase form to simplify the modeling mathematics. However, little attention is given to the zero-sequence voltage, which introduces coupling in the single-phase model and leads to significant error. In this paper, after revealing the mechanism behind the zero-sequence voltage, a more accurate generalized single-phase MMC model is proposed, which eliminates the zero-sequence voltage coupling effect and is linearized based on harmonic state space (HSS) theory to precisely characterize the internal harmonic features of MMC. A systematic HSS modeling process is presented for both open-loop and closed-loop conditions. And the proposed model is generalized as it can incorporate different control strategy by controller transfer function substitution. Hence it is valuable to analyze MMC stability and dynamics. In this paper, we formulate and solve the ac optimal power flow (AC-OPF) as an equivalent circuit problem in terms of current, voltage, and admittance state variables. The generator models are represented using conductance and susceptance state variables, and the operational and network constraints are translated to corresponding current/voltage constraints without loss of accuracy or generality. To understand the physics behind the optimality conditions of the optimization problem, we extend the linear adjoint circuit theory to translate them to equivalent circuit domain. It is shown that the operating point that defines the equivalent circuit solution precisely represents an AC-OPF solution. We then further exploit the equivalent circuit representation to use power flow simulation techniques to robustly solve the optimization problem. The efficiency of our approach is demonstrated for several AC-OPF benchmark test cases (up to 70 k buses) under nominal and congested operating conditions, and the runtime and scalability properties are presented. This paper presents a new predictive power-factor-correction (PFC) controller for series-interleaved three-level boost (TLB) converters. Compared to the state-of-the-art TLB PFC controllers, where a two-cycle prediction and a detection of an operating region are necessary, the proposed controller achieves a low total harmonic distortion of the input current by using a single equation to predict the input current in all operating regions of the converter, in just one operating cycle. The average current control is achieved by sampling at the peak of the triangular carrier. The proposed PFC controller significantly reduces the distortion of the input ac current near the zero-crossing points, resulting in a low total harmonic distortion of the input current. The operation of the proposed controller was evaluated, and its stability and robustness to parameter changes was confirmed analytically. This paper proposes a star-channel modular multilevel converter (MMC). It overcomes the zero/low-fundamental-frequency operation issues of conventional MMC while not injecting the common-mode voltage (CMV). The proposed converter is characterized by the cross connections of upper three arms and lower three arms through two sets of star-channel branches. These star-channel branches rebalance the power among three phase legs, resulting in minimized submodule capacitor voltage ripples even at zero/low-fundamental-frequency operation without CMV injection. This feature enables the proposed converter to interface medium/high-voltage DC and variable-frequency AC systems. A 4160-V 1-MW simulation model is performed in MATLAB/Simulink, and a 208-V 5-kW experimental setup is constructed in the lab. In this paper, we present an accurate and computationally efficient model for circuit simulation of ultrathin-body silicon-on-insulator MOSFETs with strong back-gate control. This work advances previous works in terms of numerical accuracy, computational efficiency, and behavior of the higher order derivatives of the drain current. We propose a consistent analytical solution for the calculation of front- and back-gate surface potentials and inversion charge. The accuracy of our surface potential calculation is on the order of nanovolts. The drain current model includes velocity saturation, channel-length modulation, mobility degradation, quantum confinement effect, drain-induced barrier lowering, and self-heating effect. The model has correct behavior for derivatives of the drain current and shows an excellent agreement with experimental data for long- and short-channel devices with 8-nm-thin silicon body and 10-nm-thin BOX. An improved method to simulate the ion-flow field generated from the corona discharge on HVDC transmission lines is proposed. To remove the oscillations in simulation of charge conservation law, an upwind weighting function is adopted in the finite-element method. The Poisson's equation and the charge conservation law are solved simultaneously through Newton's method of iterations, which accelerates the convergence of the algorithm. A rule for charge density on boundary in the bipolar problem is proposed in this paper, which ensures the stability of the iterations. The computation time, convergence rate, and accuracy of the proposed method are analyzed. The proposed method is verified by analytical and experimental results, and then it is applied to the prediction of the ion-flow field from a \pm1100-kV HVDC transmission line. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is one of the most potential converter topologies for high-power/voltage systems, specifically for high-voltage direct current (HVDC). One of the main technical challenges of an MMC is to eliminate/minimize the circulating currents of converter arms while the capacitor voltages are maintained balanced. This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) strategy that takes the advantage of a cost function minimization technique to eliminate the circulating currents and carry out the voltage balancing task of an MMC-based back-to-back HVDC system. A discrete-time mathematical model of the system is derived and a predictive model corresponding to the discrete-time model is developed. The predictive model is used to select the best switching states of each MMC unit based on evaluation and minimization a defined cost function associated with the control objectives of MMC units and the overall HVDC system. The proposed predictive control strategy: 1) enables control of real and reactive power of the HVDC system; 2) achieves capacitor voltage balancing of the MMC units; and 3) mitigates the circulating currents of the MMC units. Performance of the proposed MPC-based strategy for a five-level back-to-back MMC-HVDC is evaluated based on time-domain simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment. In this paper, three dc/dc ladder multilevel converters are compared. The first one is the classical ladder topology and the two other topologies presented are based on the classical one. A mathematical calculation of the output resistance and the gain of the converter as a function of the number of levels is carried out for the three topologies in order to estimate the voltage drop due to the output current. These calculations are validated with simulations and experimental results. Finally, the behavior of the three topologies is compared through experimental tests. Configuration of a photovoltaic (PV) power generator has influence on the operation of the generator, especially if it is prone to partial shading. In this paper, the mismatch losses and the power losses due to failure in tracking of the global maximum power point of a long string of 18 series-connected PV modules and three short strings of six series-connected PV modules connected in parallel are investigated under different partial shading conditions by using a MATLAB Simulink simulation model. The generators with parallel-connected short strings are studied in case when they have the same operating voltage and when they operate as separate strings. The results show that long series connection of modules and parallel connections of strings via a single inverter to the electrical grid should be minimized to avoid losses in case of partial shading conditions. In this paper, a numerical simulation was carried out to analyze the effect of diffusion charging on collection efficiency of a wire-plate electrostatic precipitator (ESP). The gas flow field, the electric field, and the particle field with diffusion charging considered were included in the numerical model, which was implemented by using the commercial FLUENT software. Collection efficiency was calculated by using the Deutsch–Anderson equation, in which the parameters were provided from the numerical solutions. The simulated results indicate that the effect of diffusion charging on the wire-plate ESP particle collection increases with the decreasing particle diameter, as well as applied potential, particularly for PM10. Moreover, with the increasing applied potential, collection efficiency of PM10 is obviously improved, and the effect extent first increases and then decreases with particle size increasing, but also, the size range of particle, which is significantly affected by the diffusion charging, becomes smaller. As gas velocity becomes higher, the effect of diffusion charging on grade efficiency also becomes more obvious, and the affected range of particle size gets much larger, however, at the price of grade efficiency decreasing. Using collection efficiency as reference variable of judgment, instead of particle charge, may lead to a more accurate estimation of the aforementioned size range, which can provide a great help in the further analysis of fine particle collection. Photovoltaic (PV) system performance is influenced by several factors, including irradiance, temperature, shading, degradation, mismatch losses, soiling, etc. Shading of a PV array, in particular, either complete or partial, can have a significant impact on its power output and energy yield, depending on array configuration, shading pattern, and the bypass diodes incorporated in the PV modules. In this paper, the effect of partial shading on multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) PV modules is investigated. A PV module simulation model implemented in P-Spice is first employed to quantify the effect of partial shading on the I–V curve and the maximum power point (MPP) voltage and power. Then, generalized formulae are derived, which permit accurate enough evaluation of MPP voltage and power of mc-Si PV modules, without the need to resort to detailed modeling and simulation. Although the recently proposed single-implicit-equation-based input voltage equations (IVEs) for the independent double-gate (IDG) MOSFET promise faster computation time than the earlier proposed coupled-equations-based IVEs, it is not clear how those equations could be solved inside a circuit simulator as the conventional Newton–Raphson (NR)-based root finding method will not always converge due to the presence of discontinuity at the G-zero point (GZP) and nonremovable singularities in the trigonometric IVE. In this paper, we propose a unique algorithm to solve those IVEs, which combines the Ridders algorithm with the NR-based technique in order to provide assured convergence for any bias conditions. Studying the IDG MOSFET operation carefully, we apply an optimized initial guess to the NR component and a minimized solution space to the Ridders component in order to achieve rapid convergence, which is very important for circuit simulation. To reduce the computation budget further, we propose a new closed-form solution of the IVEs in the near vicinity of the GZP. The proposed algorithm is tested with different device parameters in the extended range of bias conditions and successfully implemented in a commercial circuit simulator through its Verilog-A interface. This paper presents an improved dynamic voltage-current model of an ac electric arc furnace (EAF) for multiple operation stages and for the study of propagations of voltage fluctuations in a power network associated with the EAF in operating stages. The EAF model is developed based on wavelet-transform and neural-network-based methods by training actual measured EAF current and voltage data. The proposed EAF model is then implemented in an actual 161-kV power system for simulations. The voltage fluctuations at other buses due to the EAF in operation are then assessed. Simulation and measured results show that the improved hybrid EAF model is accurate and is suitable for voltage fluctuation assessment when the actual measurements in the power network are limited or not available while the EAF is in operation or before the similar types of EAFs are to be installed in the system. This paper introduces a multiple-input multiple-output modular multilevel dc–dc converter (MIMO-MMC) and its associated control scheme. The proposed topology has a bidirectional structure and may be utilized in both low- and high-power applications ranging from approximately 100 W–10 MW. The modular structure of the MIMO-MMC enables efficient component utilization through module voltage and current sharing capabilities. The topology can supply or extract regulated power from an arbitrary number of controllable voltage nodes without requiring source or load multiplexing, resulting in minimized filtering requirements. The MIMO-MMC's structure is described, and the steady-state operation of the converter is theoretically analyzed. The dynamic models of the converter for both step-down and step-up configuration are derived and employed to devise an effective control algorithm for closed-loop operation. A general method is provided for stability analysis of the proposed closed-loop system followed by a case study verifying stability of the system at different operating points. This paper proposes an individual phase current control (IPCC) method based on optimal zero-sequence current separation for star-connected cascade STATCOMs under unbalanced grid voltage. The IPCC is adopted to get better adaptation to unbalanced conditions. Each cluster of the cascade STATCOM has its own phase current control loop and dc-voltage feedback loop, and it can generate the necessary negative-sequence current automatically to rebalance power. However, the zero-sequence current which is unnecessary and harmful in star configuration is introduced in the process. An optimal zero-sequence current separation is presented to remove the zero-sequence current by reconstructing the reactive current command. This improved IPCC enables star-connected STATCOMs adapt to unbalanced conditions without the need for any power balancing algorithms. Also, the operation range of the proposed control method is analyzed. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a newly introduced switch-mode converter topology with the potential for high-voltage and high-power applications. This paper focuses on the design and control methods for fault-tolerant operation using redundant submodules (SMs), which is one of the most important features in the MMC topology. By comparing three design schemes of redundant SMs, the most economic and reliable scheme is identified. In addition, a mathematical model of the MMC with arms containing different numbers of SMs is developed. Based on the identified scheme and mathematical model, an energy-balancing control strategy is proposed to keep the MMC operating normally under SM fault conditions. Finally, time-domain simulations of a 61-level MMC system are performed, using the PSCAD/EMTDC software, while experiments are carried out on a 41-level MMC prototype. Modular multilevel converters (MMC) are considered a top converter alternative for voltage-source converter (VSC) high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) applications. Main circuit design and converter performance evaluation are always important issues to consider before installing a VSC-HVDC system. Investigation into a steady-state analysis method for an MMC-based VSC-HVDC system is necessary. This paper finds a circular interaction among the electrical quantities in an MMC. Through this circular interaction, a key equation can be established to solve the unknown circulating current. A new steady-state model is developed to simply and accurately describe the explicit analytical expressions for various voltage and current quantities in an MMC. The accuracy of the expressions is improved by the consideration of the circulating current when deriving all the analytical expressions. The model's simplicity is demonstrated by having only one key equation to solve. Based on the analytical expressions for the arm voltages, the equivalent circuits for MMC are proposed to improve the current understanding of the operation of MMC. This paper consists of the presentation of a regulation strategy capable of controlling the energy stored in the modular multilevel converter (MMC) in an HVDC configuration. This is achieved by regulating the positive, negative, and zero sequences in dqo coordinates of the differential current using two rotating reference frames: at once and at twice the fundamental grid frequency value. The active and reactive negative sequence components of the differential current at twice the fundamental frequency are used to eliminate the oscillations of the three-phased leg energy, reducing significantly the capacitor voltage oscillations, while the zero-sequence component is used to regulate the total energy stored at a given reference. Meanwhile, active and reactive positive sequence components of the circulating current are used for eliminating the average energy difference between the upper and lower arms in a three-phase MMC. In order to decouple efficiently the differential current components, the decoupled-double-synchronous-reference-frame current control strategy is used. Finally, simulation results validate the performance of the MMC in an HVDC configuration with the proposed control. This paper presents a numerical solution of electric field that is modified by the presence of volume charge within the region of interest. The effect of the presence of volume charge within the region of interest has been studied for both uniform and nonuniform fields. Charge simulation method coupled with the method of characteristics line is used to provide the numerical solution for the charge modified field. These two techniques are applied iteratively to converge to a self-consistent field model between the two surfaces in xerographic process. Detailed results are presented in the paper to show how the presence of toner as volume charges affects the field distribution when they are present within the field of interest. This paper presents a retrofit system that exploits a fluorescent lamp's own stray electric fields for capacitive sensing. Occupancy detection for demand-side energy management is a key application. The experimental system demonstrates a detection range of 10 ft. between the lamp and the nearest edge of the occupant. With the emergence of voltage scaling as one of the most powerful power reduction techniques, it has been important to support voltage scalable statistical static timing analysis (SSTA) in deep submicrometer process nodes. In this paper, we propose a single delay model of logic gate using neural network which comprehensively captures process, voltage, and temperature variation along with input slew and output load. The number of simulation programs with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE) required to create this model over a large voltage and temperature range is found to be modest and 4\times less than that required for a conventional table-based approach with comparable accuracy. We show how the model can be used to derive sensitivities required for linear SSTA for an arbitrary voltage and temperature. Our experimentation on ISCAS 85 benchmarks across a voltage range of 0.9–1.1 V shows that the average error in mean delay is less than 1.08% and average error in standard deviation is less than 2.85%. The errors in predicting the 99% and 1% probability point are 1.31% and 1%, respectively, with respect to SPICE. The two potential applications of voltage-aware SSTA have been presented, i.e., one for improving the accuracy of timing analysis by considering instance-specific voltage drops in power grids and the other for determining optimum supply voltage for target yield for dynamic voltage scaling applications. Complex patterns formed by an array of micrometer spots can be transferred onto a silicon wafer using a one-step noncontact pattern transfer method by dc plasma immersion ion implantation. The transferred images can be demagnified or magnified by placing a metal ring in contact with the metal mask (demagnification) or sample (magnification). Scanning electron microscopy reveals that the center to center distance between the imaged holes can be reduced from 300 to 245 $\mu $ m, that is, center to center distance in the mask. The 2-D multiple-grid particle-in-cell simulation illustrates that the electric field between the metal mask and sample leads to the demagnification and magnification effects. This one-step and truly noncontact process that has potential applications in transferring pattern onto soft and flexible substrates is applicable to brittle nanostructures that may not survive etching. A new approach to the analytical solution of the 2-D Poisson equation including the inversion-charge density in undoped square gate-all-around metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors has been developed. We have obtained functions with different degrees of complexity to calculate the electric potential in the devices under study. The results obtained are compared with the data simulated by solving the Poisson equation numerically.
