These proceedings contain the papers of the 14th International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2017), 18-20 October 2017, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS) and endorsed by the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSISE). The CELDA 2017 Conference received 72 submissions from more than 25 countries. Out of the papers submitted, 27 were accepted as full papers for an acceptance rate of 38%; 23 were accepted as short papers and 2 were accepted as reflection papers. Fostering students' bidirectional conception of the equal sign (viewing the equal sign as indicating an equivalence of two sides rather than a 'show result' symbol) is challenging, and students' misconception of the equal sign is persistent. Some studies mention that in China, the pedagogical approach to introducing the equal sign supports students' development of bidirectional sense toward the equal sign. Built up on this body of literature, this paper further investigates the Chinese pedagogy from the researcher, students and the teacher's perspectives.

These proceedings contain the papers of the IADIS International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2013), October 22-24, 2013, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS), co-organized by The University of North Texas (UNT), sponsored by the Association for Educational Communication and Technologies (AECT), and endorsed by the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSISE). The CELDA 2013 conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning, and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality, and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aims to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. However, innovative contributions that do not easily fit into these areas are also included as long as they are directly related to the overall theme of the conference--cognition and exploratory learning in the digital age. The transition between arithmetic and algebraic thinking is challenging for students. One notable difficulty for students is understanding algebraic symbols--pronumerals. Researchers are exploring pedagogical approaches in seeking to address this issue. The current paper is contributing to this body of literature by illustrating how an online card matching game-based learning activity supports students' understanding of pronumerals.

Classroom instruction in China and in the United States have sharp differences. Typically, constructivist learning theory shapes American classroom instruction whereas Confucian educational culture shapes Chinese classroom instruction. Furthermore, typically, Chinese classrooms adopt a direct instructional approach whereas American classrooms adopt an indirect instructional approach. Awareness of such differences in classroom instruction informs educators of the educational backgrounds of students coming from different educational environments and cultures, enabling educators to better serve different student populations. Additionally, it is worth noting that educational culture worldwide is converging as indicated by world culture theory. This paper presents different classroom instruction in China and the U.S., and inspires educators to learn from the differences, reflect on their own instruction, and eventually innovate and improve their instruction. Previous studies have uncovered the relationship between handwriting and mathematics performance, without articulating the underlying cognitive mechanism. With 197 Chinese fourth graders as participants, this study explored the mechanism by which the spacing/spatial relationship in handwriting legibility affects number-line estimation through VMI. The results indicate that (1) the spacing/spatial relationship in handwriting legibility had a direct and positive effect on students' number-line estimation performance; (2) VMI completely mediated the relationship between the spacing/spatial relationship in handwriting legibility and number-line estimation. Overall, the findings confirmed one specific mechanism of linguistic influences on students' numerical knowledge. Possible explanations for the results and implications for future research are discussed.

Future time perspective is now increasingly catching attention in educational psychology field. There is evidence that students' future time perspective negatively affected students' academic procrastination. Although the relationship between future time perspective and academic procrastination is stable. There are research gaps to be filled. On the one hand, most attention was paid to older students such as undergraduates rather than primary students. On the other hand, we still know little about the mechanism of their relationship. This study aimed to explore the mediating role of students' positive emotion between their future time perspective and academic procrastination. A total of 185 (92are boys and 93 are girls) primary students completed measures self-report in the study. Correlational results showed that future time perspective positively correlated positive emotion, negatively associated with academic procrastination, and positive emotion negatively linked to academic procrastination. Bootstrapped mediation results showed positive emotion partially mediated the relationship between future time perspective and academic procrastination. The Commission on International Adult Education (CIAE) of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) provides a forum for the discussion of international issues related to adult education in general, as well as adult education in various countries around the globe. These "Proceedings" are from the Commission of International Adult Education's (CIAE) 2022 International Pre-Conference. This year's "Proceedings" contain 12 papers from 18 authors, representing CIAE's usual diversity of authors and topics. Researcher and research sites include Canada, China, Ghana, Italy, Nigeria, and the United States. A major theme continuing from the 2021 conference is the impact of COVID-19 on learners in a variety of settings, including teacher training, adult basic education, and higher education. A second major theme concerns cross-cultural learning, including among migrants and in higher education. Some papers address adult learning experiences in myriad social contexts, such as learning for democracy, aging, military, and spiritual learning. A special feature at this year's Pre-Conference is a focus on CONFINTEA VII and the Marrakech Framework for Action. Personalized education systems recommend learning contents to students based on their capacity to accelerate their learning. This paper proposes a personalized exercise recommendation system for online self-directed learning. We first improve the performance of knowledge tracing models. Existing deep knowledge tracing models, such as Dynamic Key-Value Memory Network (DKVMN), ignore exercises' concept tags, which are usually available in tutoring systems. We modify DKVMN to design its memory structure based on the course's concept list, and explicitly consider the exercise-concept mapping relationship during students' knowledge tracing. We evaluated the model on the 5th grade students' math exercising dataset in TAL, one of the biggest education groups in China, and found that our model has higher performance than existing models. We also enhance the DKVMN model to support more input features and obtain higher performance. Second, we use the model to build a student simulator, and use it to train an exercise recommendation policy with deep reinforcement learning. Experimental results show that our policy achieves better performance than existing heuristic policy in terms of maximizing the students' knowledge level. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that deep reinforcement learning has been applied to personalized mathematic exercise recommendation. [For the full proceedings, see ED599096.]

This paper reports on an investigation of the student interaction and group development of a four-student group during collaborative mathematics problem solving. Video and written transcript of the group interaction were analysed. The group problem solving has been described by the flow of negotiative events in terms of topics discussed within the group. Positioning theory framed four interaction positions which described student interaction. A mutual relationship between the two has been identified in this case. Implications for collaborative problem solving are discussed.

Influenced by COVID-19, online learning has become one of the most important forms of education in the world. In the era of intelligent education, knowledge tracing (KT) can provide excellent technical support for individualized teaching. For online learning, we come up with a new knowledge tracing method that integrates mathematical exercise representation and association of exercise (ERAKT). In the aspect of exercise representation, we represent the multi-dimensional features of the exercises, such as formula, text and associated concept, by using ontology replacement method, language model and embedding technology, so we can obtain the unified internal representation of exercise. Besides, we utilize the bidirectional long short memory neural network to acquire the association between exercises, so as to predict his performance in future exercise. Extensive experiments on a real dataset clearly proved the effectiveness of ERAKT method, they also verified that adding multi-dimensional features and exercise association can indeed improve the accuracy of prediction. With the development of personalized learning in technological platforms, more data and information are given to instructors on what contents are appropriate for a learner's next step, with an aim of helping them support their students in navigating an optimized learning path that can promote an enhanced learning outcome. In this study, we collected data from an online learning platform, Learnta® TAD , which allows teachers to distribute tasks based on system recommendations. The recommendations are directed by the system's knowledge graph algorithm, determining whether the student is ready to learn the task (i.e. the task is within the student's Zone of Proximal Development), whether the student is not yet ready to learn the task, or whether the student has already mastered the task. We used the acquired data to investigate whether giving content in each of these groups results in different learning outcomes. Statistical methods such as subgroup analysis, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression are conducted to address the proposed topic. Replicating a prior, smaller-scale study, our findings suggest that the student gains more mastery when assigned Ready-to-Learn tasks than when assigned Unready-to-Learn tasks, across Math and English, more and less successful students, and in-class and homework. Moreover, students who are given already mastered tasks perform better than those who are given Ready-to-Learn and Unready-to-Learn tasks across all groups. [For the full proceedings, see ED607784.]

Teachers' pedagogical practices and beliefs as they pertain to learning through robotics is becoming increasingly important in education. However, these topics have received little scholarly attention. This study aimed to investigate teachers' pedagogical practices and beliefs regarding developing elementary-school students' creative thinking through robotics. Eleven elementary school teachers participated in this study. We used semi-structured interviews to collect data. A qualitative analysis of teacher interviews revealed that many teachers viewed themselves as facilitators in their class, prioritized the development of students' higher-level abilities, and placed their own emphasis on learning outcomes. This study has implications for teachers and researchers interested in helping students develop their higher-order competencies. [For the complete proceedings, see ED601080.]

This study investigated whether elementary students could collectively advance a knowledge-building discourse through judgments of promisingness and epistemic reflection. Supported by the Promising Idea Tool and its accompanying pedagogical design, 32 grade six students were involved in judging the promisingness of their community ideas, refining ideas iteratively, and explicitly reflecting on their knowledge-building discourse using knowledge-building principles. We analyzed students' online discourse using multivariate methods, including socio-semantic network analysis and content analysis. Socio-semantic network analysis indicated that the students progressively advanced their community ideas and the community became more connected over time. Content-analysis results indicated that sixth graders could collectively improve their discourse by contributing diverse ideas, negotiating a fit, and generating questions, using problem-centered uptake moves and synthesis notes. The study's findings have important implications for the design of technology-rich environments, and shed light on how teachers can use them to help learners engage in productive collaborative inquiries. In recent years, the development of mobile technology and devices makes Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) available tools in classroom teaching and learning. AI and AR are used to improve the learning effect as well as motivate the students' learning enthusiasm. In English as a second language (ESL) learning, several previous studies show the potential advantages of the usage of AI and AR. In this study, an English learning lesson with a mobile based handwriting recognition and AR application was designed and implemented in primary school lower grade. A series of class activities using the application as teaching tool are developed. The aim of this research is to find out the effect of the possible effect of AR application in practical English class and the influence of it on the pupils. Pre-post test and face-to-face interview are made and they show that there are some advantages the usage of the application has led to both teacher and students. Handwriting recognition-based AR application in ESL could motivate the students to pay more attention to the class and improve their learning enthusiasm. [For the full proceedings, see ED621557.]

The number of ethnic Chinese students in schools across Australian cities is small but increasing. It is important to understand how these students socialise into the Australian (mathematics) education system, so that we can better facilitate their education experiences in ways which optimise their potential to learn. This paper reports on part of a larger study which seeks to deepen our knowledge in this area. The research question addressed by this paper is: what are the preferences amongst three types of mathematical tasks of Grade 5 and 6 students from Chongqing, China? Through the administration of a questionnaire to 1109 students, it was found that across the topics of Number and Geometry, contextualised tasks were the most preferred by Chinese students. "Challenging", "easy to do" and "involving a model" were students' reasons for preferring particular task types. The significance of providing all students with a diverse range of task types, at the same time providing them with opportunities to be challenged and to experience success, are emphasized.

This paper explores the possibilities for building research-oriented, school-engaged teacher education through the professional learning of volunteer teacher-researchers. Volunteerism in education covers a broad spectrum of people and activities ranging from working in school canteens to supporting language and literacy programs. This paper reports on the professional learning of volunteer Mandarin teaching assistants as they develop into volunteer teacher-researchers. Situating this study in relation to Australian National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program, this paper draws on concepts from "Asia literacy" for its theoretical framework. A review of the research literature points to a need to value volunteers' contributions to teaching experience as a way of promoting volunteerism in schools. Elements of the research method for the study reported here include the project's focus, the participants and their selection, and ethical protocols. The analysis of evidence explores the transition through the work-integrated professional learning of these volunteer teacher-researchers, tracking their development through a collection of 28 documents. The discussion section uses the concept of "Asia literacy" to analyse the value of this research-oriented, school-engaged teacher education program. (Contains 4 tables.)

Today in China it is the homeroom teacher who plays the important role in psychological counseling. This paper discusses the development of homeroom teachers and the many roles they take on in schools. It states that the homeroom teacher is a leader, organizer, and manager who is the main person to carry on the national educational policy, the educational and teaching plan for the school, the link of the home to the school, and promote student development. The paper lists the requirements for the homeroom teachers, their objectives, and responsibilities. Responsibilities related to psychological counseling include moral education, understanding and helping students who lag behind, guidance of student learning, guidance of personal relationships, guidance of psychological problems, guidance of physical and health problems, and guidance of careers and future education. Some of the methods used by homeroom teachers include one-on-one counseling, class meetings, group discussion, lectures, and visiting with families. It summarizes that the homeroom teacher system makes it possible for teachers to know more about their students and provides ways to solve problems in a timely manner. (JDM)

This paper presents an empirical case study on the expansion of education in China (excluding Taiwan) since the foundation of the People's Republic of China in 1949 to 1995. The study uses an estimation of the national primary school enrollment rates from 1949-1951 and that in the period of "the Cultural Revolution," and uses the available official statistics of China in other years. The paper argues that currently available theories about expansion of education, mainly based on the observation of western countries, cannot be well applied to this general pattern. Factors influencing China's unique educational development include economics, politics, and public policy. The paper offers an exploratory view of the general pattern of educational development and its implications for the future. (Contains 25 references.) (EH)

This paper presents the findings of a study conducted in China to identify the potential benefits of incorporating robotics as an educational tool for 100 primary and 320 secondary school teachers of general technology. The Professional Learning Program was conducted from 2010-2013 in China. The major focus of the program was on the development within the teacher participants of knowledge, attitudes, habits-of-mind, skills and confidence necessary for the successful enactment of the curriculum reforms. It aimed to facilitate the development of "adaptive expertise" in using technology to facilitate innovative teaching and learning in Chinese classrooms. The study found that teachers made substantial progress towards the development of adaptive expertise as manifested not only by advances in the teachers' repertoires of pedagogical content knowledge but also in changes to their levels of confidence and identities as teachers. Although the study occurred in China, many of the issues with respect to professional learning by teachers are not unique to China. Thus many of the key issues identified in this study have wider implications for professional learning programs in other countries introducing student-oriented reforms in schools.
