Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2006 to 2016, the Gaussian kernel density estimation was initially used to describe the characteristics of the inter-provincial differences in household energy consumption (HEC), a dynamic panel data model was established secondly to study the main factors affecting HEC, and finally the counterfactual decomposition method was used to calculate the contribution of each factor to the inter-provincial differences in HEC. The research results are shown as follows: First, the inter-provincial HEC in China shows a phenomenon of agglomeration and growth, and the HEC level of different regions presents difference and imbalance. Second, the logarithms of consumption habits, total population and residents' income have significant effects on the logarithm of HEC, the influence coefficients are 0.191, 0.073 and 0.745, respectively; HEC not only has significant inertia characteristics, but also has certain population size effect and wealth effect. Third, the logarithms of technological progress, urbanization and household energy price have significant effects on the logarithm of HEC, the influence coefficients are 0.864, 0.195 and −0.346, respectively; the HEC saved by technological transformation is not sufficient to offset the increase in HEC demand, urbanization can improve HEC significantly, but the household energy price significantly inhibits HEC. Finally, from the perspective of contribution, the total population, residents' income and urbanization contribute a lot to the inter-provincial differences, totaling 73.02%. The possible innovations of this paper are as follows: First, the contribution of the influencing factors to the difference of inter-provincial HEC is studied, which is rarely seen in the previous literature. Second, compared with traditional decomposition method, counterfactual decomposition method is more convenient for economic interpretation. Third, the divergent conclusions of scholars are pointed out in this paper, and the actual impact of influencing factors on HEC are clarified. The living conditions and energy consumption have been gradually increased in rural area of Shandong Province, China. However, the existing heating technology cannot meet the requirement of occupants’ thermal comfort. Therefore, a more promising heating technology needs to be taken into account. With regard to public place in the rural area, this paper draws a comparison of heat source using Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), gas boiler and biomass boiler in aspects of efficiency and economy, and conducts a simulation for the indoor air temperature field using different heating technologies, such as radiator, radiant floor and tuyere. Regarding the conventional residence, this paper summarizes the advantages of household ASHP in aspects of efficiency, environment, economy, technology and market. One of the critical challenges facing China is environmental pollution caused by insufficient use of clean energy. This paper empirically investigates the impact of rural labor mobility on household clean energy use using data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). The results indicate that labor mobility significantly promotes the adoption of clean energy by rural households, with income effects and information channel effects serving as the underlying mechanisms. The study also finds that health risks, as an important consideration for household energy use choices, enhance this positive effect. Furthermore, heterogeneity analysis reveals that labor mobility has a greater impact on households with lower levels of education, lack of social security, and those located in central and western regions. Therefore, the government should take measures to increase the income of the rural migrant population and continuously widen the information channels for rural households to promote clean energy use. Household fuel-use (HFU) patterns are strongly associated with multiple effects, including air quality, human health, and regional climate change. This paper presents the results from the first Chinese Environmental Exposure-Related Human Activity Patterns Survey (CEERHAPS), carried out among 91,121 households located in 9108 villages, 636 towns, and 159 counties in 31 provinces. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with each participant to obtain information about the type of fuels used for cooking and heating. The main objectives of this paper were to investigate HFU for cooking and heating in China, to validate the World Health Organization (WHO) model, and to help inform local evaluation models. In China, gas and biomass fuels, the dominant energy fuels for cooking, are used by 44.8% and 32.1% of households, respectively. Approximately 34.1% of families have no household heating during the cold season, and 16.7%, 15.6% and 12.8% of households rely on coal, electricity, and biomass, respectively, for household heating when no central heating was available. The proportion of households using solid fuels has generally decreased during the last two decades. Considerable spatial variation was evident in the HFU patterns for both cooking and heating. The data revealed that the predominant fuel for cooking was biomass (47.6%) in rural populations, whereas urban households were more likely to cook with gas (65.8%). In terms of heating, coal (21.4%) and biomass (19.0%) were the main fuels used in rural households, while electricity (23.6%) and coal (10.5%) were more commonly used in urban areas. The overall HFU results for cooking from this study were comparable to those predicted using the WHO model. We also developed models at the provincial level to estimate HFU for cooking and heating in China; it is expected that the model, if confirmed by future studies, could be used for future research on household air pollution, domestic human exposure and burden of disease. In recent years, China's rapid economic development and steady growth of household consumption have contributed to the continuous growth of energy consumption. In addition to considering direct household energy consumption, the indirect effects of people's consumption activities on energy consumption in other productive sectors can't be ignored. According to the input-output analysis framework and consumer lifestyle analysis, this paper mainly studies the direct and indirect consumption of energy by Chinese household consumption ways and the relationship between energy structure and lifestyle. From the perspective of structural analysis, the input-output subsystem model (scale component, own internal component, feed-back component and spillover component) is used to analyze the energy supply and demand relations among 36 sectors of the national economy related to the lives of household in 2012 and 2017, revealing the change trend and transmission mechanism. This paper also focuses on the impact of household consumption ways on energy consumption of industrial sector and changing consumer lifestyles on energy saving, meanwhile it also forecasts China's future household energy consumption under four scenarios. The results show that in 2012 and 2017, total consumption of energy which is influenced by household consumption ways in China is 28461.82 PJ and 44759.96 PJ, respectively, accounting for 26.9% and 34.1% of total consumption of final energy. The indirect energy consumption is 1.3 times and 1.65 times of direct, respectively. The coal consumption accounts for the majority of indirect energy consumption. The smelting and pressing of ferrous metals is the industrial sector which is most affected by the household consumption ways. The scale component, own internal component, feed-back component and spillover component has accounted for 18.5%, 1.3%, 0.1% and 80.0%, from 17.5%, 2.0%, 0.2% and 80.3% of energy consumption in total, respectively. Under the four scenario development modes (NN, NA, LN and LA), it is predicted that the indirect energy consumption in household life in 2025 is 43740.56PJ, 34922.93PJ, 39149.37PJ and 31257.28PJ, respectively. China is experiencing a stage of rapid urban development. The energy consumption and related carbon dioxide emissions of households continue to increase. This paper calculates direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions of households based on the input–output method in China from 1996 to 2012. The results reveal that there were more total carbon dioxide emissions from urban households than from rural households, far more indirect emissions from urban households than from rural households, slightly more direct emissions from urban households than from rural households, and differences in direct carbon dioxide emissions from various fuels and in indirect emissions from various sectors between urban and rural households. To examine the causal relationship between urbanization and the carbon dioxide emissions of households, cointegration and Granger causality tests are applied. A unidirectional causal relation was found running from urbanization to both direct and indirect household carbon dioxide emissions, and the direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions of households would increase 2.9% and 1.1%, respectively, for every increase of one percent in urbanization. We discuss the reasons of why the development of urbanization will lead to more household direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions, and suggest certain policy implications for urbanization and carbon dioxide emissions based on the results of this study. China has been the world's largest producer and consumer of air conditioners, and more and more RACs 1 1 The RACs is short for room air conditioners. would be owned by China's households along with the rapid economic development. Air Conditioner is also considered as one of the largest potential contributors to energy reduction among home appliances because of the huge energy consumption. Therefore, the national energy efficiency standards were issued to promote the use and production of high-efficient RACs. According to China's energy efficiency standards, this paper investigated the electricity savings and CO 2 emission reductions from RACs over the period of 2005–2025. The results indicate that the rural RAC market which develops more slowly than the urban one still has great potential, and government has to revise subsidy policies to make the standards more effective, especially for rural areas. In 2025, the total electricity consumption of RACs is projected to be 598–674 TW h, while the amount without energy efficiency standards is 753 TW h. From 2005 to 2025, the energy efficiency standards for RACs can save 1430–2540 TW h electricity and reduce 908.3–1610. 1 Mt CO 2 emissions in different scenarios. This paper attempts to present a complete picture of the status quo and future trends of the development of rural household energy in China based on a literature review and a systems analysis. First, a comprehensive literature review was conducted from the perspectives of energy consumption, carbon emissions and pollutants, energy resources, energy technologies, and energy policies. The review revealed the complexities and dynamics of the current system of rural household energy in China, and several key issues were identified for further attention. These issues are further explored by a systems analysis based on the “Integrated strategy of Sustainable development objectives, Decision-making systems, Operation systems, and Physical systems” (I-SDOP) concept. Following this method, a complete picture of the market status and policy targets is presented, by mapping an energy Sankey diagram and by reviewing the behavior of the main players. The results indicate that synergy of various energies, technologies, and players, and a combination of flexible engineering schemes and policy designs, with adequate consideration of temporal variation and regional disparity, are key strategies to promote the sustainable development of rural household energy, especially the distributed utilization of renewable energy, in China. Abstract: In China, Rapid economic growth has stimulated fast urban expansion and rural household income and consumption expenditure. In current paper, an input–output method is used to determine the impact of China’s increased urban and rural household consumption on carbon emissions. The results shows that the direct and indirect CO2 emission from household consumption accounted for more than 40% of total carbon emissions from primary energy utilization in China in 1992–2007. The population increase, expansion of urbanization and the increase of household consumption per capita all contribute to an increase of indirect carbon emissions, while carbon intensity decline mitigates the growth of carbon emissions. Therefore, at the domestic level, household consumption is of great significance for CO2 emission, which could be mitigated through changing the composition of goods and services consumed by households, and switching to consumption pattern of less carbon-intensive products. The government must consider the substantial contribution of household consumption to carbon emissions when China is encouraging consumption in order to address the current global financial crisis. Abstract: As one of the world''s top energy consumers and carbon emitters, China attracts extensive attention to its energy issues. Based on the hybrid energy input-output model, this paper forecasts the direct and indirect household energy demand growth caused by higher living standards in China with reference to a national well-off goal by 2020. Results show that such rigid energy demand will increase 1.55 billion tce by 2020 with average growth rate of 5.2% on static assumption, or 1.3 billion tce if energy conversion efficiency changes from 69% to 71.6%. If unchanged household energy consumption structure is assumed, total energy demand could decline from 5.5 billion tce to 4.9 billion tce by 2020. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper contributes to the large volume of literature investigating the link between awareness and pro-environmental behaviours by combining theory and empirical evidence. We first develop a simple model incorporating agents′ environmental awareness in their decision-making processes, which helps us to understand the fundamental mechanism. Using household level data taken from the 2015 China General Social Survey (CGSS), we then empirically test a number of hypotheses derived from the theoretical framework. Our results confirm that the role of awareness is important in affecting household energy consumption and pro-environmental choices. Both accessibility and affordability of using energy improves social wellbeing in terms of health status. Awareness alone does not necessarily reduce energy consumption, but subjective factors can play important roles. Moreover, household′s subjective attitude can significantly influence decisions to purchase more energy efficient products and encourage pro-environmental choices. As an important part of urban carbon emissions, the carbon emissions from household energy consumption are increasing with the continuous improvement of Chinese urbanization. This study divides family population into 4 groups: adolescents (aged 0–17), young people (aged 18–44), middle-aged people (aged 45–59), and elderly people (aged 60 and older) and develops a calculation model for carbon emissions of household energy consumption in accordance with the latest standards of the World Health Organization based on Chinese Family Panel Studies in 2016. Results showed that the marginal and intergenerational effects coexist in various types of household energy consumption: Families with 3–5 people have the most economical consumption scale and the largest marginal sharing effect; multigenerational families or families with a large proportion of middle-aged and older people are beneficial in reducing household energy consumption. This paper suggests it is important to fully consider the impact of the intergenerational effect, marginal effect, and cultural shock caused by the electronic information age on household energy consumption when formulating standards of household energy consumption. This paper presents a direct modelling approach to evaluate household travel energy consumption and CO 2 emissions based on the spatial form of neighborhoods and streets. It integrates one multinomial logit model and four double hurdle models to predict travel outcomes: vehicle ownership portfolio choice, car travel distance, bus travel distance, motorcycle travel distance and ebike travel distance. The energy consumption and CO 2 emissions are then estimated using these travel outcomes. A full application of the modelling approach is demonstrated through a pilot project in Jinan, China. A holdout validation is also performed to address the over-fitting problem of models calibrated from the training set data. With the rapid growth in the Chinese economy in recent decades, household incomes as well as consumption of goods and services have also steadily increased. This has resulted in growing demand for energy consumption across the economy. It has been suggested that consumption upgrades in tandem with substitutions might exert an impact on mitigating this growth. The input-output method was applied in this study to analyze variations in household indirect energy consumption between 1997 and 2012. The impact of consumption substitution on change was also determined using a two-tier structural decomposition analysis, in which the second-tier is a further decomposition based on first-tier results. The results show that the indirect energy use caused by household consumption makes up between 75% and 78% of total household energy demand and that this increased 161.2% over the study period. First-tier decomposition results reveal that this change was mostly caused by household consumption scale and energy intensity effects. Second-tier decomposition results reveal strong evidence for consumption substitution between energy-intensive industries and non-energy-intensive ones and that this can have an impact on reducing household indirect consumption. Household consumption therefore plays a prominent role in total energy consumption. Transforming to non-energy-intensive or services led consumption patterns should therefore be encouraged by the Chinese government in order to achieve conservation goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The household sector consumes a large amount of goods and services and is therefore a major source of global carbon emissions. This study aims to analyze per person household carbon emission (HCEs) patterns of urban and rural China over the period from 1995 to 2011. Annual macroeconomic data for the study were obtained from authentic Chinese government sources. Direct HCE estimates for each fossil fuel were obtained using the IPCC's reference approach, and indirect HCEs were calculated by input-output analysis. In 1995, per person HCEs from direct sources for urban and rural China were 0.50 tCO2 and 0.22 tCO2, respectively; by 2011, these values had increased to 0.60 tCO2 and 0.61 tCO2, an increase of 20% and 177.27%, respectively. Similarly, in 1995, per person HCEs from indirect sources for urban and rural China were 0.43 tCO2 and 0.16 tCO2, respectively; by 2011, these values had increased to 1.77 tCO2 and 0.53 tCO2, respectively, an increase of 306% and 235%. The reasons for these differences and the sets of policies required to rectify increasing emissions are discussed. If current trends and practices continue, with a RMB1000 increase in per capita income from 2011 levels, per person HCEs in urban and rural China will increase by 0.119 tCO2 and 0.197 tCO2, respectively. This result indicates that the sector of society which is most vulnerable will contribute most to China's increasing HCEs. This study was aimed at developing a better understanding of environmental pressure of urban household consumption in China. First, we introduced the concept model of household metabolism. Using this model, we analyzed the changes of Chinese household metabolism during the last 20 years. Rather than taking into account all aspects of household consumption, we just focused on water and energy metabolisms. After exploring the clearly increasing trends of urban household metabolism in China, we identified the underlying driving forces as biological/physical factors, economic/marketing factors and demographic factors.
