With the aggregation of renewable energy in the power system, the uncertainty caused by the renewable energy affects the planning and operation of power systems. Meanwhile, the existing planning models fail to consider renewable energy uncertainty methods, specifically concerning renewable energy confidence and future possible scenarios; thus, a confidence-based scenario cluster method is presented. A novel generator, network, load, and energy storage (GNLS) co-planning model is proposed in the paper. First, a confidence-based scenario cluster is built, which can reflect uncertainties by clustering and analyzing wind, solar, and load. Second, the proposed model focuses on load and energy storage co-planning, and in addition, relevant flexible indices are used to assess the model. Finally, the GNLS co-planning model is built as a bi-level stochastic model on continuous time scales. The model is solved using the Benders decomposition algorithm. The method in this paper is validated using an IEEE RTS 24-bus and a real test system in China to demonstrate the reduction in renewable energy curtailment and optimization of economic factors in power system planning. As the adoption of renewable energy sources grows, ensuring a stable power balance across various time frames has become a central challenge for modern power systems. In line with the "dual carbon" objectives and the seamless integration of renewable energy sources, harnessing the advantages of various energy storage resources and coordinating the operation of long-term and short-term storage have become pivotal directions for future energy storage deployment. To address the complexities arising from the coupling of different time scales in optimizing energy storage capacity, this paper proposes a method for energy storage planning that accounts for power imbalance risks across multiple time scales. Initially, the Seasonal and Trend decomposition using the Loess (STL) decomposition method is utilized to temporally decouple actual operational data. Subsequently, power balance computations are performed based on the obtained data at various time scales to optimize the allocation of different types of energy storage capacities and assess the associated imbalance risks. The construction and development of energy storage are crucial areas in the reform of China's power system. However, one of the key issues hindering energy storage investments is the ambiguity of revenue sources and the inaccurate estimation of returns. In order to facilitate investors' understanding of revenue sources and returns on investment of energy storage in the existing electricity market, this study has established multiple relevant revenue quantification models. The research methodology employed in this paper consists of three main components: Firstly, we established a revenue model and a cost model for energy storage participation in the electricity market. These models focus on arbitrage revenue, subsidy revenue, auxiliary services revenue, investment cost, operational and maintenance cost, and auxiliary service cost of energy storage. Subsequently, we utilized an enhanced Grey Wolf Optimizer algorithm to solve the optimization problem and maximize revenue, thus obtaining the optimal capacity and revenue scale of energy storage in the electricity market. Finally, we compared the whole-lifecycle ROI of different energy storage options in various scenarios. The evaluation results demonstrate that the difference between peak and off-peak loads impacts the investment demand and charging/discharging depth of energy storage. In addition, the discrepancy between peak and off-peak prices affects the arbitrage return of energy storage. These two factors can serve as criteria for energy storage investors to assess their return expectations. When solely considering economic returns and disregarding technical factors, pumped storage energy storage emerges as the most suitable mechanical energy storage option requiring investment. The main contribution of this study lies in the estimation of the lifecycle investment returns for various energy storage technologies in the Chinese electricity market, thus providing valuable insights for the investment and operational practices of market participants. In order to solve the problem of randomness and volatility caused by the rapid growth of renewable energy (RE), energy storage systems (ESSs)—as an important means of regulation—can effectively improve the flexible regulation capacity of power systems utilizing a high proportion of RE. Most of the current ESS capacity configuration procedures are carried out based on the typical scenario method or time series production simulation. This method tends to determine the size of the ESS configuration through multiple trial simulations. Uncertainty of simulation prediction data can result in the existence of an excess capacity or lack of configured capacity. In addition, this method reflects the ESS demand under specific targets, but it fails to fully utilize RE generation characteristics. The configuration process lacks the mathematical mechanism of RE consumption, and the calculation process is too complicated. In view of the shortcomings of traditional ESS optimal configuration methods, this paper examines the mathematical mechanism of RE consumption and proposes the ESS optimal configuration analysis method based on "equal area criterion". First, the principle of RE consumption is analyzed and the "RE consumption characteristic curve" is proposed according to RE characteristics. In addition, a working principle diagram of RE consumption, including ESS, is constructed to visually show the consumption capacity of RE and the working position of ESS. Then, the ESS optimal configuration process, based on the "equal area criterion", is proposed to achieve an accurate match between ESS capacity demand and RE consumption targets. Finally, the power grid of a region in China is taken as an example. We prove that the proposed method can save 1.41 × 103 MWh of ESS capacity and provide a more "mathematical" and "convenient" systematic solution for RE consumption and ESS optimization compared to the production simulation method. With the promotion of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and the construction of renewable-dominated electric power systems, renewable energy will become the main power source of power systems in China. Therefore, ensuring frequency stability and system security will emerge as pivotal challenges in the future development process. Created by combining a Li-ion battery and a supercapacitor, a hybrid energy storage system (HESS), which possesses robust power regulation capabilities and rapid response capabilities, holds promise for supporting the frequency stability of power systems. In this context, the assessment of the economic viability of HESSs providing multitype frequency response services becomes a critical factor in their deployment and promotion. In this paper, an economic analysis approach for a Li-ion battery–supercapacitor HESS towards a multitype frequency response is presented. First, a multitype frequency response-oriented operational mode for the HESS is designed, outlining the roles and functions of the Li-ion battery and the supercapacitor in delivering distinct services. Moreover, building upon the analysis of the power trajectory of Li-ion batteries, a lifetime model for the HESS is proposed based on the rain-flow counting method. Furthermore, considering the competitive landscape for the HESS in the frequency regulation ancillary service market, a full lifecycle economic assessment model is proposed. Finally, case studies on actual power system frequency data and PJM market data are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the simulation results confirm that the HESS exhibits robust performance and a competitive advantage in providing multitype frequency response services. To address the complexity of siting and sizing for the renewable energy and energy storage (ES) of offshore oil–gas platforms, as well as to enhance the utilization of renewable energy and to ensure the power-flow stability of offshore oil–gas platforms, this paper proposes a hierarchical clustering-and-planning method for wind turbine (WT)/photovoltaic (PV) ES. The proposed strategy consists of three stages. First, the WT/PV power generation is forecast by a LightGBM model. The WT/PV siting and sizing at each node of the distribution network is optimized with a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, with the objectives of economy and stability. In the second stage, the distribution network is partitioned into sub-clusters, based on a voltage and loss-sensitivity index. Finally, the ES siting and sizing is optimized with PSO to minimize the line loss and the voltage fluctuation for each sub-cluster. The relationship between the economic and stability indicators is conducted quantitatively in the joint-planning approach. Considering the 10 kV distribution network of an oil–gas platform in the Bohai Sea of China as an example, our experiments demonstrated that by adjusting the WT/PV ES capacity for different gas-turbine power outputs, line losses can be reduced by 55–66% and voltage fluctuations can be reduced by 30.4–47.5%. With the promotion of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and the construction of renewable-dominated electric power systems, renewable energy will become the main power source of power systems in China. How to ensure the accommodation of renewable energy will also be the core issue in the future development process of renewable-dominated electric power systems. In this context, shared energy storage (SES), a novel business model combined with energy storage technologies and the sharing economy, has the potential to play an important role in renewable energy accommodation scenarios. This paper systematically organizes the application prospect, development status and key technologies of SES in the renewable energy accommodation scenario in the context of China, providing helpful references for the promotion of the business model. Firstly, a typical SES framework for renewable energy accommodation is described, and three basic forms of SES in this scenario are presented. Moreover, the application prospect of SES in the renewable energy accommodation scenario is quantitatively analyzed based on the renewable energy generation planning under the carbon peaking goal and the current guarantee mechanism of renewable energy accommodation. Furthermore, the rules for energy storage systems that provide the peak-regulation ancillary service in typical regions and provincial administrative regions in China are summarized, and the development status of SES in the renewable energy accommodation scenario is analyzed, combined with the actual market data. The introduction of the new round of electricity reform policies has made the electricity sales companies' trading environment increasingly complex. In the medium- and long-term market and spot market, following the new policy-oriented optimization of trading decisions is the focus of electricity sales companies. The main objective of this study is to consider the impact of the latest policies of China's current electricity reform on each subject of electricity trading and to propose a method for electricity sales companies to make optimal decisions on renewable energy source (RES) power and conventional energy source (CES) power mixed with power trading in the medium- and long-term and spot markets to improve the efficiency of electricity market trading, promoting the consumption of renewable energy and helping the synergistic development of the electricity market and the tradable green certificate (TGC) market. This paper first discusses the impact of the new electricity reform policies on the transactions of various subjects in the electricity market and constructs the model of the consumer utility function, the profit model of an electricity sales company, and the profit model of power generators with energy storage. Considering the complex power supply and demand relationship among the various subjects of the electricity market, a game model is established for the decision on mixed trading between the medium- and long-term market, the spot market, and the tradable green certificate market to minimize the comprehensive power purchase cost of an electricity sales company. To reduce the decision-making risk caused by the uncertainty of spot price, the prophet model is used to predict the spot price; finally, through the analysis of the decision-making model of the electricity sales companies, the optimal transaction decisions of the electricity sales companies in different trading periods and different scenarios are solved. The test results show that the proposed model can significantly improve the profitability of the electricity sales companies and provide a decision-making reference for electricity sales companies to participate in the medium- and long-term market and spot market. Future energy system will feature in a high-share of renewable energies (REs), which poses huge challenges to obtain full utilization of renewable power generation. To solve the problem, this paper presents a joint-operation two-stage mixed integer linear programming model to coordinate the power system and train transportation system by optimizing the logistics of mobile batteries and real-time charge/discharge in cities. The full/empty batteries are transported through the train transportation system between the load side and the renewable energy station, which improves renewable energy penetration, economics, and mobilities. The first-stage model deals with the preliminary logistic optimization of batteries including routes, time and capacities of transportation, and the second-stage model optimizes real-time schedule of charge/discharge of batteries. The aim of the proposed model is to minimize the transportation cost, maximize the utilization rate of renewable energy in an energy system and smooth the daily load curve. The proposed model considers technical constraints such as railway transportation capacity, load demand satisfaction and renewable energy consumption in the power system. The optimal logistics plan and real-time charging and discharging plan can be obtained for both full and empty battery transportation. The validity of the method is verified with real data from Northeast China and Northern China, including railway routes, renewable energy output, and load profiles. The results show that the renewable energy penetration rate increases from 84.4% to 95.3% in Northeast China and from 42.7% to 78.2% in Northern China under the 2050 scenario with the proposed method. The peak-to-valley difference in the daily load curve decreases by 84% and 100% in Northeast China and Northern China, respectively. Meanwhile, the case study shows that the costs of battery transportation decrease from 0.398 CNY/kWh and 0.377 CNY/kWh to 0.252 CNY/kWh and 0.254 CNY/kWh when energy density of battery increases from 0.170 kWh/kg to 0.250 kWh/kg. This indicates that mobile energy storage has great economics. Moreover, renewable energy penetration rate is increased and peak-to-valley difference of daily load curve is decreased with no additional transmission lines. Large-scale renewable integration presents an effective way to decarbonize power grids, but carries increased risk of supply shortfalls owing to its volatility and uncertainty. Storage is a promising option to improve the generation adequacy of renewable. Thus, capacity credit assessment of renewable and storage is crucial in ensuring adequate generation capacity to meet loads. However, efficiently and accurately assessing capacity credit of these resources is challenging due to temporal dependencies in the operational time series (net loads and conventional generation units) and the need for extensive operation simulations. This paper develops a comprehensive multi-time-scale assessment framework integrating analytical and simulation methods to calculate the capacity credit of renewable and storage, thus capturing temporal features of these time series. Then, an interval-based strategy is proposed to simulate system operations, incorporating demand response in key scenarios. Furthermore, partitioning around medoids clustering and parallel computing techniques are employed to greatly accelerate the numerous operations for capacity credit assessment. The proposed method is validated using the RTS-79 system and a provincial real-world power grid in China. In this paper, a collaborative power dispatching system (CPDS) was developed to maximize the profit of a regional biomass power system consisting of an independent power grid. A power generating, dispatching and carbon emissions trading system (CETS) could be engaged in joint strategic planning and operational execution. The principal of CPDS is interactive planning of generating units in power generation and carbon emissions trading. An efficient carbon emissions trading plan for a CPDS would lead to optimized power generation levels under available power production capacities and carbon emissions. In a case study, four generator policies are proposed by considering basic CETSs to comparatively analyze the function of each generator in the CPDS. Results of four scenarios are compared, showing that biomass energy could replace thermal units to a certain extent, the carbon emissions and coal consumption of the CPDS would lie at a lower level, and a pumped storage unit could adjust the load fluctuations. The results of a carbon trading analysis show that the CETS has no significant impact on the CPDS, but along with the increase in trading price or the decrease in the free quota, the economic interests of power plants will be reduced accordingly. This may lead to carrying out low-carbon projects and reducing carbon emissions. The energy storage configured in the power grid can improve the power flow distribution and alleviate transmission congestion, postponing the investment of new devices. A deterministic co-planning model is firstly developed considering voltage fluctuation, reactive power flow and the flexibility of voltage source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC). To address the solving complexity caused by the non-convexity of the model, second-order cone programming (SOCP) is applied to transform the proposed model into a convex problem. To cope with the uncertainty of renewable energy, the robust co-planning formulation is established, where the data-adaptive uncertainty set with the extreme scenario method is introduced to describe renewable generation uncertainty. The column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm is adopted to decompose the robust co-planning problem into a master problem and several slave problems, which reduces the calculation scale and accelerates the solving process. Two case studies on a modified Garver's 6-bus system and a practical Jiangxi province power system in China are carried out to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed robust co-planning model. In this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal coordination method based on spectral analysis for a wind-PV-hydropower system that targets the maximum virtual energy storage gain. The complementary effect of hydropower on wind and PV power can be seen as changes in the regulation ability resulting from the hydropower construction development as well as a decreased variance in the total system production output. This method is used to determine the optimal coordination distance of multiple energy sources that are matched over different periods representing typical climate variation. A case study in the Yalong River basin in China obtains the best range of hydropower bundling surrounding wind power and PV power stations under different hydropower construction planning scenarios, and it reveals that increased regulation capacity of hydropower will reduce the optimal coordination distance but can achieve more energy balance if both actual storage and virtual storage is accounted for. This approach can realize energy delivery with the optimal coordination distance to meet intensive and efficient development needs, which can provide guidance and support for the planning and construction of wind-PV-hydropower storage systems. High renewable energy penetration is an effective way to decarbonize the power system. However, many studies focus on the economics of integrating renewables at the generation-side rather than system-wide. This paper aims to explore the cost-optimal operation strategies of a renewable-dominant power system. Considering both cost reduction potential of energy storage technology and regional investment cost variance of ultra-high voltage direct current grids, an hourly-resolution, multi-region model with total system costs minimized is proposed. Moreover, energy storage-based, ultra-high voltage direct current-based, and mixed scenarios are taken into consideration to investigate the economics of high renewables penetration. The results show that energy storage technology can achieve maximum penetration of renewable energy at 85.8% while the total system cost is 11.8% higher than that of ultra-high voltage direct current transmission technology. Although ultra-high voltage direct current grid is the most economical option to integrate renewables, the penetration is 13 percentage points lower than that of energy storage technology. The combination of energy storage technology and ultra-high voltage direct current grid can achieve 74.2% renewable energy penetration, saving 9.4% of total system costs compared to that of energy storage technology only. The cost-optimal option for East and South China is to promote both energy storage and ultra-high voltage direct current technologies. The decarbonisation targets of the People's Republic of China are ambitious. Their achievement relies on the large-scale deployment of variable renewable energy sources (VRES), such as wind and solar. High penetration of VRES may lead to balancing problems on the grid, which can be compensated by increasing the shifting flexibility capacity of the system by integration with energy storage, e.g., by installing additional electricity storage. Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) is the most diffused electricity storage technology at the global level and the only fully mature solution for long-term electricity storage. China already has the highest PHS capacity installed worldwide and plans to increase it strongly before 2030. The present study, based on the data from the "Pumped Storage Tracking Tool" of the International Hydropower Association, investigates the potential for technological improvement of the existing and future PHS fleet in China. The aims of adopting advanced PHS solutions allow China to better cope with the task of balancing the VRES production. The potential for adopting advanced PHS solutions is evaluated through five different intervention possibilities (here referred to as scenarios). These scenarios consider revamping part of the operational Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) fleet and redesigning future installations that are already planned. As a result, considering all the major technical and authorisation process constraints, 4.0% (5.2 GW) of the 132 GW fleet expected to be commissioned before 2035 could additionally adopt advanced PHS in a high-potential scenario. Meanwhile in the medium and low potential scenarios, the quota can reach 11.1% (14.6 GW) and 26.2% (34.5 GW), respectively.
