No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-11-01 Eucalyptus plantation productivity has increased 4-fold across Brazil as a result of improved genetic selection and intensive silviculture. However, the rate of productivity improvements is slowing and suggests increased production will require planting in areas that have never been previously planted with Eucalyptus with uncertain impacts on local water supplies. This study compares water use and water use efficiency between a drought resistant (E. grandis × E. camaldulensis) and high productivity Eucalyptus clone (E. urophylla) across three sites (dry, mesic and wet) spanning a two-fold precipitation gradient (~600–1350 mm y−1) in Brazil. Each site included a 30% reduced rainfall treatment for each clone to investigate within site response to reduced precipitation. We found that the drought resistant clone used as much or more water than the high productivity clone at all three sites. The drought resistant clone transpired almost 20% percent more water than the high productivity clone at the dry site (3.7 vs. 3.0 m3 y−1) while water use between clones did not differ at the mesic (4.6 vs 4.0 m3 y−1) and wet site (4.0 vs 4.5 m3 y−1). The high productivity clone transpired 54, 46 and 37% of annual precipitation at the dry, mesic and wet sites respectively while the drought resistant clone consumed 67, 47 and 31% of annual precipitation from the dry to the wet site. Although the rain reduction treatments did not impact annual water use for either clone at the dry and mesic sites, there were some differences at a subannual timescale. Rain reduction treatments at the dry site lowered transpiration in the driest, hottest three months for the high productivity clone by 25–32%. Rainfall reduction led to lower water use by the drought resistant clone for only one month during the dry season (18%). The high productivity clone transpired less water (24–26%) in the rainfall reduction treatment at the mesic site during three months and the drought resistant clone transpired 18 and 20% less water in the rainfall reduction treatment during two months. Rainfall reduction reduced annual transpiration by 59% for the high productivity clone at the wet site. Average water use efficiency of the drought resistant clone was almost 70% lower than the high productivity clone at the dry and mesic sites (~5.2 vs. 1.5 kg m−3 y−1) and was due to the combination of low growth and high water use. Higher than expected growth by the drought resistant clone at the wet site resulted in similar water use efficiency between clones (6.3 vs. 5.8 kg m−3 y−1). We discuss potential implications of our findings and highlight several lines of evidence that suggest the drought resistant clone in this study allocates a greater proportion of gross primary productivity below ground allowing it to access deeper reserves of soil water during dry periods. Our results suggest that decisions to plant drought resistant clones in drought prone areas should be carefully considered and also highlight the need for more research on water use and drought tolerance strategies for Eucalyptus clones bred for more arid areas in Brazil. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-11-01 Clonal plantations of Eucalyptus are among the most productive forests in the world, with intensification of silviculture and genetic breeding doubling the wood mean annual increments over the past four decades. The TECHS Project demonstrated that even with intensive silviculture, wood production varies by more than two-fold across environmental gradients, and growth of highly selected clones differs by more than two-fold within a site. Wood production accounts for less than half of the photosynthesis of a forest, and we tested two hypotheses about the relation between wood production and the entire carbon balance for five genotypes across four of the TECHS sites, varying in temperature and water availability. We hypothesized that the influence of the environment on carbon fluxes and partitioning related to gross primary production would be consistent across genotypes. We also hypothesized that carbon flux and partitioning would be more sensitive to water stress than temperature. Annual average temperatures ranged from 18 to 27 °C, and annual rainfall ranged from about 600 to 1500 mm yr−1. Water stress was further tested by reduction in rainfall within sites using troughs to capture about 30% of incoming rain. The geographic gradient led to a six-fold range in wood net primary production during the two years of measurement (from age 1.5 to 3.5 years, the period of maximum current annual increment). Gross primary production (GPP) differed only by two-fold, highlighting very large differences among sites in partitioning: wood net primary production (NPP) accounted for 44% of GPP on sites with higher GPP, and only 34% of GPP on lower GPP sites. The average differences for wood NPP among clones was also large, with about half of the differences among clones relating to differences in GPP, and half to differences in the partitioning to wood NPP. The clones showed similar partitioning patterns across sites, supporting our first hypothesis. Differences across sites and clones in partitioning of GPP to wood NPP related inversely to belowground allocation. Belowground partitioning of carbon increased with increasing temperature and increasing water stress. Our second hypothesis was rejected, as patterns across sites related somewhat more strongly to temperature than to water stress. Overall, this ecophysiological investigation in the TECHS Project underscored the importance of understanding how carbon budgets differ across sites (even with intensive silviculture), and why clones can largely differ in wood production. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-05-29 The common black field cricket, Gryllus assimilis (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), damages young plants of red cedar, Juniperus virginiana (Cupressaceae); strawberry, Fragaria × ananassa (Rosaceae); sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum (Poaceae); teak, Tectona grandis (Lamiaceae); upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum (Malvaceae); and, mainly, Eucalyptus spp. (Myrtaceae). The objective of this study was to investigate the biological and behavioral parameters of this insect in the laboratory and in Eucalyptus spp. plantations in Inhambupe, Bahia State, Brazil. The incubation period and the viability of G. assimilis eggs were 11.87 days and approximately 22%, respectively. The duration of the nymphal stage was 62.34 days with approximately 60% of the nymphs obtained in the laboratory being females. The average number of egg batches per female, eggs per female, and eggs per batch per female of this insect were 25.50, 862.17, and 34.65, respectively. G. assimilis females lived for 76.50 days in the adult stage, and 138.34 days in total, from egg through nymph to adult. Males produced three characteristic sounds: one for the marking of territory, one for courtship, and one when alone. G. assimilis fed primarily on weeds but, in their absence, it damaged young Eucalyptus spp. plants. This paper presents important data on the biology and behavior of G. assimilis; this information may encourage additional biological research, laboratory rearing, and integrated management of this pest. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in plants typically suffer from limited statistical power. An alternative to the logistical and cost challenge of increasing sample sizes is to gain power by meta-analysis using information from independent studies. We carried out GWAS for growth traits with six single-marker models and regional heritability mapping (RHM) in four Eucalyptus breeding populations independently and by Joint-GWAS, using gene and segment-based models, with data for 3373 individuals genotyped with a communal EUChip60KSNP platform. While single-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) GWAS hardly detected significant associations at high-stringency in each population, gene-based Joint-GWAS revealed nine genes significantly associated with tree height. Associations detected using single-SNP GWAS, RHM and Joint-GWAS set-based models explained on average 3-20% of the phenotypic variance. Whole-genome regression, conversely, captured 64-89% of the pedigree-based heritability in all populations. Several associations independently detected for the same SNPs in different populations provided unprecedented GWAS validation results in forest trees. Rare and common associations were discovered in eight genes involved in cell wall biosynthesis and lignification. With the increasing adoption of genomic prediction of complex phenotypes using shared SNPs and much larger tree breeding populations, Joint-GWAS approaches should provide increasing power to pinpoint discrete associations potentially useful toward tree breeding and molecular applications.

A thorough understanding of the heritability, genetic correlations and additive and non-additive variance components of tree growth and wood properties is a requisite for effective tree breeding. This knowledge is essential to maximize genetic gain, that is, the amount of increase in trait performance achieved annually through directional selection. Understanding the genetic attributes of traits targeted by breeding is also important to sustain decade-long genetic progress, that is, the progress made by increasing the average genetic value of the offspring as compared to that of the parental generation. In this study, we report quantitative genetic parameters for fifteen growth, wood chemical and physical traits for the world-famous Eucalyptus urograndis hybrid (E. grandis × E. urophylla). These traits directly impact the optimal use of wood for cellulose pulp, paper, and energy production. A population of 1,000 trees sampled in a progeny trial was phenotyped directly or following the development and use of near-infrared spectroscopy calibration models. Trees were genotyped with 33,398 SNPs and 24,001 DArT-seq genome-wide markers and genomic realized relationship matrices (GRM) were used for parameter estimation with an individual-tree additive-dominant mixed model. Wood chemical properties and wood density showed stronger genetic control than growth, cellulose and fiber traits. Additive effects are the main drivers of genetic variation for all traits, but dominance plays an equally or more important role for growth, singularly in this hybrid. GRM´s with >10,000 markers provided stable relationships estimates and more accurate parameters than pedigrees by capturing the full genetic relationships among individuals and disentangling the non-additive from the additive genetic component. Low correlations between growth and wood properties indicate that simultaneous selection for wood traits can be applied with minor effects on genetic gain for growth. Conversely, moderate to strong correlations between wood density and chemical traits exist, likely due to their interdependency on cell wall structure such that responses to selection will be connected for these traits. Our results illustrate the advantage of using genomewide marker data to inform tree breeding in general and have important consequences for operational breeding of eucalypt urograndis hybrids. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-03-15 Mixing N-fixing trees with eucalypts is an attractive option to improve the long-term soil N status in fast-growing plantations established in tropical soils. A randomized block design was replicated at four sites in Brazil to compare the biogeochemical cycles in mono-specific stands of Eucalyptus (100E) and Acacia mangium (100A) with mixed-species plantations in a proportion of 1:1 (50A50E). Our study aimed to assess the effects of introducing A. mangium trees in Eucalyptus plantations on atmospheric N 2 fixation, N cycling and soil organic matter stocks. Litterfall and soil N mineralization were measured over the last two years of the rotation (4–6 years after planting). Aboveground N accumulation in the trees and C and N stocks in the forest floor and in the top soil were intensively sampled at harvesting age. N 2 fixation rates were estimated using the natural abundance of 15 N as well as by the difference between total N stocks in 100A and 50A50E relative to 100E (accretion method). While the 15 N natural abundance method was unsuitable, the accretion method showed consistently across the four sites that atmospheric N fixation reached about 250 and 400 kg N ha −1 rotation −1 in 50A50E and 100A, respectively. Except at one site with high mortality, N contents within trees at harvesting were approximately 40% higher in 100A than in 100E. Mean N contents in litterfall and N mineralization rates were about 60% higher in 100A than in 100E, with intermediate values in 50A50E. The amounts of N in litterfall were much more dependent on soil N mineralization rates for acacia trees than for eucalypt trees. Soil C and N stocks were dependent on soil texture but not influenced by tree species. N budgets over a 6-year rotation were enhanced by about 65 kg N ha −1 yr −1 in 100A and 40 kg N ha −1 yr −1 in 50A50E relative to monospecific eucalypt plantations. Introducing N-fixing trees in eucalypt plantations might therefore contribute to reducing the need for mineral N fertilization in the long-term. Although eucalypts are the most planted hardwood trees worldwide, the majority of them are frost sensitive. The recent creation of frost-tolerant hybrids such as Eucalyptus gundal plants (E. gunnii × E. dalrympleana hybrids), now enables the development of industrial plantations in northern countries. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of cold on the wood structure and composition of these hybrids, and on the biosynthetic and regulatory processes controlling their secondary cell-wall (SCW) formation. We used an integrated approach combining histology, biochemical characterization and transcriptomic profiling as well as gene co-expression analyses to investigate xylem tissues from Eucalyptus hybrids exposed to cold conditions. Chilling temperatures triggered the deposition of thicker and more lignified xylem cell walls as well as regulation at the transcriptional level of SCW genes. Most genes involved in lignin biosynthesis, except those specifically dedicated to syringyl unit biosynthesis, were up-regulated. The construction of a co-expression network enabled the identification of both known and potential new SCW transcription factors, induced by cold stress. These regulators at the crossroads between cold signalling and SCW formation are promising candidates for functional studies since they may contribute to the tolerance of E. gunnii × E. dalrympleana hybrids to cold.

[Departement_IRSTEA]Territoires [TR1_IRSTEA]SYNERGIE [Axe_IRSTEA]TETIS-ATTOS; International audience; The Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR-1) has provided very useful images dataset for several applications such as forestry. L-band radar measurements have been widely used but with somewhat contradictory conclusions on the potential of this radar wavelength to estimate the aboveground biomass. The first objective of this study was to analyze the L-band SAR backscatter sensitivity to forest biomass for Eucalyptus plantations. The results showed that the radar signal is highly dependent on biomass only for values lower than 50 t/ha, which corresponds to plantations of approximately three years of age. Next, Random Forest regressions were performed to evaluate the potential of PALSAR data to predict the Eucalyptus biomass. Regressions were constructed to link the biomass to both radar signal and age of plantations. Results showed that the age was the variable that best explained the biomass followed by the PALSAR HV polarized signal. For biomasses lower than 50 t/ha, HV signal and plantation age were found to have the same level of importance in predicting biomass. For biomasses higher than 50 t/ha, plantation age was the main variable in the random forest models. The use of PALSAR signal alone did not correctly predict the biomass of Eucalyptus plantations (R² lower than 0.5 and RMSE higher than 46.7 t/ha). The use of plantation age in addition to the PALSAR signal improved slightly the prediction results (R² increased from 0.88 to 0.92 and RMSE decreased from 22.7 to 18.9 t/ha). PALSAR imagery does not allow a direct estimation of the planting date of Eucalyptus stands but can follow efficiently the occurrence of clear-cuts if images are acquired sequentially, therefore allowing a rough estimate of the following plantation date because a stand of Eucalyptus is generally re-planted 2 to 4 months after cutting. With a time series of radar images, it could be therefore possible to estimate the plantation age, and therefore improving the estimates of plantation biomass.

International audience; Eucalypts are the world's most widely planted hardwood trees. Their outstanding diversity, adaptability and growth have made them a global renewable resource of fibre and energy. We sequenced and assembled >94% of the 640-megabase genome of Eucalyptus grandis. Of 36,376 predicted protein-coding genes, 34% occur in tandem duplications, the largest proportion thus far in plant genomes. Eucalyptus also shows the highest diversity of genes for specialized metabolites such as terpenes that act as chemical defence and provide unique pharmaceutical oils. Genome sequencing of the E. grandis sister species E. globulus and a set of inbred E. grandis tree genomes reveals dynamic genome evolution and hotspots of inbreeding depression. The E. grandis genome is the first reference for the eudicot order Myrtales and is placed here sister to the eurosids. This resource expands our understanding of the unique biology of large woody perennials and provides a powerful tool to accelerate comparative biology, breeding and biotechnology.

Most of the studies on GLAS waveforms have fo- cused on natural forests and only a few were conducted over forest plantations. This work set out to estimate the stand-scale dominant height and aboveground biomass of intensively managed Euca- lyptus plantations in Brazil using the most commonly used models developed for natural forests. These forest plantations are valuable case studies, with large and numerous stands that are very uni- form, in which field measurements are precise compared to nat- ural forests. The height of planted Eucalyptus forest stands esti- mated from waveforms acquired by GLAS were compared with in situ measurements in order to determine the model that produced the best forest height estimates. For our slightly sloping study site (slope < 7°), the direct method defined as the difference between the signal begin and the ground peak provided forest height es- timates with an accuracy of 2.2 m. The use of statistical models based on waveform metrics and digital elevation models provided slightly better results (1.89 m accuracy) in comparison with the di- rect method and the most relevant metrics proved to be the trailing edge extent and the waveform extent. Moreover, a power law model was used to fit in situ aboveground biomass to in situ forest height. The results using this model with GLAS-derived heights showed an accuracy for biomass of 16.1 Mg/ha.

Foram amostradas 40 subparcelas de 2 m² em cada remanescente natural e sub-bosque de eucalipto e 60 subparcelas de 3,5 m² em cada área reflorestada. Foram amostrados todos os indivíduos arbóreos de regeneração com altura > a 10 cm e diâmetro do caule até a altura do peito (DAP) < 5,0 cm e analisados separadamente, em quatro classes de altura, a diversidade florística, a regeneração natural (Rn%), o valor de importância (VI) e a similaridade da regeneração com indivíduos de DAP > 5 cm. Foram identificados 1.990 indivíduos, pertencentes a 24 famílias, 46 gêneros e 51 espécies. Cabralea canjerana, Psidium cattleyanum, Nectandra megapotamica, Acacia polyphylla e Syzygium cumini estavam entre as espécies mais representadas nas quatro categorias de tamanho. O reflorestamento com espécies nativas em áreas degradadas da várzea do rio Mogi-Guaçu promoveu a regeneração natural com biodiversidade superior aos remanescentes naturais de florestas ciliares sob efeito de borda e contribuiu para com o processo de restauração de ecossistemas florestais. The phytosociology of the woody stratum of both young regenerating individuals and seed banks are quality indicators of heterogeneous reforestations. The objetive of this research was to evaluate the structure of regeneration of the arboreal species in two natural remainders, in three areas reforested with native species and in a Eucalyptus robusta settlement located in a floodplain of Mogi-Guaçu river in Luiz Antônio County (21°31´S and 47°55´W), São Paulo, Brazil. Sampling was collected in 40 subplots of 2 m²in of each natural remainder and each eucalyptus sub-forest, as well as 60 subplots of 3.5 m²in each area reforested. All individuals with height > 10 cm and diameter at breast height (DBH) < 5.0 cm were measured and analyzed separately in four height classes according to floristic diversity, similarity, density, frequency, dominance, importance value and natural regeneration. A total of 2,010 individuals were identified, belonging to 24 families, 46 genera and 51 species. The species with greater importance values were Cabralea canjerana, Psidium cattleyanum, Nectandra megapotamica, Acacia polyphylla and Syzygium cumini, well represented in the four height classes. Reforestation with native species in a degraded Mogi-Guaçu River floodplain promoted natural regeneration with more biodiversity than in natural remainders submitted to border effect, and contributed to the forest ecosystem restoration process. The 20-year-old Eucalyptus robusta plantation promoted the regeneration of climax and secondary species. International audience; Tension wood formed in response to gravitational force is a striking example of the plasticity of angiosperm wood. In this study our goal was to characterize the early changes in gene expression during tension wood formation in Eucalyptus.Using cDNA array technology, transcript profiling of 231 genes preferentially expressed in differentiating Eucalyptus xylem was followed from 6 h to 1 wk of a tension time course of artificially bent Eucalyptus trees.196 genes were differentially regulated between control and bent trees, some exhibiting distinctive expression patterns related to changes in secondary cell wall structure and composition. For instance, expression of a cellulose synthase gene was well correlated with the appearance of the G-layers. Cluster correlation analysis revealed differential regulation of lignin biosynthetic genes and may also be used to help infer the function of unknown gene products.Eucalyptus wood transcriptome analysis during tension wood formation not only provided new clues into the transcriptional regulatory network of genes preferentially expressed in xylem, but also highlighted candidate genes responsible for the genetic and environmentally induced variation of wood quality traits.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2003-12-01 Two field trial were conducted in Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden x Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake crops at Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul State and Brotas, São Paulo State, Brazil, to evaluate the effects of weed control in strip of different width on the Eucalyptus plant growth. The experiments consisted of two groups treatments: group 1 - with constant width control strips being kept during the first 12 months, i.e., at 0, 25, 50, 100, 125 and 150cm on each side of the Eucalyptus row and, group 2: with increasing width control strips being adopted along the experimental period, i.e., at 25 to 150, 25-50-150, 50 to 150, 50-125-150, 100-125-150, 100 tot 150 and 125 to 150 cm on each side of the Eucalyptus row during the first 12 months. At 49 moths after planting it was verified that the Eucalyptus plants that had grown both in the constant and increasing width control strips, equal to or higher than 100 and 50 cm, respectively, showed higher steam diameter, plant height, volume and annual increment average of wood. These results led to the conclusion that the minimum control strip width should be 100 cm on each side of the Eucalyptus row in order to keep the crop free of weed interference.
