The article reports on a conference on intersectionality, held in Bangor, Wales, from June 28-29, 2012. Topics of discussion included the interplay of gender, race, and ethnicity in the socioeconomic and cultural experiences of migrants in Europe, multiculturalism, and the acculturation and assimilation of immigrants.

Abstract

The article discusses the social conditions of Mauritius from the late 18th through early 19th centuries through examining the former East Indian slave and Île de France (Mauritius) estate owner Marie Rozette. An overview of the role that gender played in economic and class mobility in colonial Mauritius is provided. Race and ethic relations in Mauritius, including in relation to marriage, Marie Rozette's owning of slaves and her relationship with the white notary Antoine Gombaud, are discussed.
