Line loss refers to the electrical energy that is dissipated as heat during the transmission and distribution of electricity through power lines. However, unusual causes, such as grid topology mismatch and communication failure, can cause abnormal line loss. Efficient abnormal line loss detection contributes not only to minimizing energy wastage and reducing carbon emissions but also to maintaining the stability and reliability of the entire distribution network. In actual situations, the cause of abnormal line loss is not labeled due to the expensive labor cost. This paper proposes a hierarchical abnormal line loss identification and category classification model, considering the unlabeled and unbalanced sample problem. First, an abnormal line loss identification model-based random forest is established to detect whether the line loss is abnormal. Then, an abnormal line loss category classification model is developed with semi-supervised learning for line loss abnormal category classification, considering the unlabeled samples. The real dataset in China is utilized to validate the performance of the proposed model. This paper proposes a temperature-adaptive radiative cooling (TARC) coating with simple preparation, cost effectiveness, and large-scale application based on a thermochromic powder. To determine the energy efficiency of the proposed TARC coating, the heat transfer on the surface of the TARC coating was analyzed. Then, a typical two-story residential building with a roof area of 258.43 m2 was modeled using EnergyPlus. Finally, the energy-saving potential and carbon emission reduction resulting from the application of the proposed TARC roof in buildings under different climates in China were discussed. The results showed that the average solar reflectivity under visible light wavelengths (0.38–0.78 μm) decreases from 0.71 to 0.37 when the TARC coating changes from cooling mode to heating mode. Furthermore, energy consumption can be reduced by approximately 17.8–43.0 MJ/m2 and 2.0–32.6 MJ/m2 for buildings with TARC roofs compared to those with asphalt shingle roofs and passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) roofs, respectively. This also leads to reductions in carbon emissions of 9.4–38.0 kgCO2/m2 and 1.0–28.9 kgCO2/m2 for the buildings located in the selected cities. To enhance building energy efficiency, TARC roofs and PDRC roofs are more suitable for use on buildings located in zones with high heating demands and high cooling demands, respectively. It says that the conference was organized by Key Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation at the Education Ministry of the South China University of Technology. Moreover, a warm response from researchers in the heat transfer was received by the conference.

The design of thermal insulation in roofs is very important to reduce energy consumption and decrease the environmental impacts of buildings. An integrated economic and environmental assessment-based optimization design method is presented in this paper to find the best candidate insulation design scheme for building roofs, including the determination of roof thermal insulation type and the optimum insulation thickness. In the optimization design method, a zonal method-based double-skin ventilation roof heat transfer model is developed to predict the roof energy consumption. Economic and environmental benefits due to thermal insulation are calculated by using the economic analysis model, the environmental analysis model, and roof energy consumption. Moreover, an integrated dimensionless economic and environmental assessment index is proposed to evaluate different roof thermal insulation design schemes. The optimum insulation thickness is determined by maximizing the sum of economic benefit and environmental benefit due to thermal insulation. The validation results in a real building show that the predicted data for the zonal-based double-skin ventilation roof heat transfer model agreed well with the measured data, with a maximum relative error of 8.2%. The optimum insulation thickness of extruded polystyrene (EPS), mineral wool (MW), and polyurethane (PU) was between 0.082 m and 0.171 m for the single-skin roof in a low-temperature granary in Changsha region in China. The ranking of the integrated assessment indexes of thermal insulation is EPS > MW > PU. A double-skin ventilation roof can reduce the optimum thickness of thermal insulation. The best result is obtained by EPS for the double-skin roof with a grey outer surface color for the low-temperature granary roof in Changsha region in China. The influencing factors of insulation type, roof structure, and roof outer-surface color should be considered in finding the best candidate insulation design solution for building roofs. The integrated economic and environmental assessment-based optimization design method can help designers to efficiently find the best design scheme of thermal insulation to maximize the sum of economic benefit and environmental benefit for building roofs. The NHR-200 reactor in China adopts the noncondensable gas self-stabilizing control and the noncondensable gas used for pressure stabilization control can weaken steam condensation heat transfer in the integrated steam-gas pressurizer. A condensation experimental system was established and the heat transfer characteristics of steam-nitrogen and steam-argon condensation under natural convection had been investigated. The pressure ranged from 0.516 to 5.10 MPa. The distributions of nitrogen and argon in the steam/gas mixture were obtained in the experiments, and the results showed that nitrogen and argon were evenly distributed in the steam under different pressure, respectively. The effects of heat transfer temperature difference had also been investigated and it is found that the total heat transfer coefficient difference had little influence on the total condensation heat transfer coefficient. However, the steam condensation heat transfer coefficient decreased with the increase of the degree of supercooling of the wall. The condensation heat transfer coefficient was reduced by approximately 0.11 kW/(m2·K) as the degree of supercooling of the wall changed from 14°C to 36°C. The condensation heat transfer coefficient also decreased with the mass/molar fraction of noncondensable gas increasing and a certain difference between the effect of the mass fraction of noncondensable gas and the effect of the molar fraction of noncondensable gas was discussed in this paper. To match for the different temperature of the geothermal resource and strengthen the flexibility of organic Rankine cycle, a variable capacity power generation superstructure based on flash and organic Rankine cycle for geothermal energy was proposed. A combined flash-binary experimental prototype is newly established to investigate thermodynamic performance both on system and equipment in this paper. Pressured hot water is adopted as the extensive worldwide existed hydrothermal geothermal resource, eliminating the influence of the used heat transfer oil on evaporating process. The experimental results show that there is an optimal mass-flow rate of R245fa under the condition of different heat source temperature. Flash and binary power subsystem dominate the flash-binary power system, respectively, when the heat source temperature is 120 °C and 130 °C. The isotropic efficiency of modified compressor just between 0.2 and 0.25. The power output of per ton geofluid are 0.78 kWh/t and 1.31 kWh/t, respectively, when the heat source temperature are 120 °C and 130 °. Blast furnace slag, a by-product of the iron and steel production process, contains a significant amount of untapped heat resources. Currently, China is entering a period of rapid growth in scrap production, making efficient scrap utilization a new research focus. One approach to improving scrap utilization is preheating. This study proposes a new method of preheating scrap using high-temperature slag in a drum. The discrete element method is employed for numerical simulation, which involves constructing a three-dimensional model. The study explores three influencing factors: the mass ratio of high-temperature slag to scrap, the shape of the scrap, and the drum rotational speed. The main objective is to investigate the heat transfer situation between the high-temperature slag and the scrap. The results indicate that the optimal heat transfer effect in the drum is achieved when the mass ratio of high-temperature slag to scrap is 2:1, the scrap is spherical in shape, and the drum rotational speed is 12 rpm. We present a deep learning approach based on the physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) for estimating thermal evolution of the crust during tectonic uplift with a changing landscape. The approach approximates the temperature field of the crust with a deep neural network, which is trained by optimizing the heat advection-diffusion equation under boundary conditions such as initial and final thermal structure, topographic history, and surface and basal temperatures. From the trained neural network of temperature field and the prescribed velocity field, one can predict the temperature history of a given rock particle that can be used to compute the cooling ages of thermochronology. For the inverse problem, the forward model can be combined with a global optimization algorithm that minimizes the misfit between predicted and observed thermochronological data, in order to constrain unknown parameters in the uplift history or boundary conditions. We demonstrate the approach with solutions of one- and three-dimensional forward and inverse models of the crustal thermal evolution, which are consistent with results of the finite-element method. China has ranked first worldwide in graphite imports in recent years, facing a graphite supply risk. Coal-hosted graphite is the focus of future graphite deposit exploration. The current research on the enrichment and mineralization mechanism of coal-hosted graphite is superficial, and the identification standard of coal-hosted graphite is incomprehensive, restricting the exploration of coal-hosted graphite mineral resources and the development of coal metamorphic evolution theory. In this study, the Caotangou–Meigoucoal-hosted graphite deposit in western Qinling Mountain was taken as a case study for dissection. Based on the data from 1/50,000 and 1/200,000 regional geological mapping and the data of graphite mines in the study area, the samples were systematically collected and analyzed to explore the mechanism of coal graphitization through a 1:5000 geological profile survey, 1/10,000 geological mapping in key areas, and the investigation and cataloguing of abandoned coal-hosted graphite adit. The result was that there were two main coal-hosted graphite ore bodies, striking from nearly east to west. The Rmax values of the samples were 7.23–8.15%, the average values of Vdaf were around 5.0%, the d002 value of the II ore body was 0.3433–0.3389 nm, the d002 value of the I ore body was mainly 0.3418–0.3429 nm, the graphitization degree G value of the II ore body was 8.14–59.30%, the graphitization degree G value of the II ore body was 12.79–25.58%. The II ore body was coal-hosted graphite, while some samples of the I ore body were coal-hosted graphite, and some samples were coal. The magmatic heat controls the thermal metamorphism of coal seams to form graphite. The closer the distance to the magma body, the larger the crystals, and the higher the euhedral degree, indicating the higher degree of coal seam metamorphism. The nearly north–south compressive structures mainly provided effective tectonic stress for the evolution of coal graphitization during the Yanshan period; the basic structural units (BSUs) rotated and rearranged, eventually forming a straight graphite structure, and tectonic stress catalyzed the graphitization process. • A PVT collector with a roll-bond absorber is designed for rural home application. • Thermo-laminating is a novel and convenient method for PV-absorber connection. • The validated PVT model can simulate the roll-bond PVT performance accurately. • The model is available for predicting the dynamic performance of PVT systems. This paper mainly investigated the performance of a low-cost roll-bond water-type photovoltaic thermal (PVT) collector from both experimental and modelling approaches under the climatic conditions of Sichuan Basin of China. The design and manufacturing process of the PVT prototype adopted the available commercial PV panels for convenience and for reducing the manufacturing cost. The experiment measured all the main properties of the developed PVT module. The excellent heat transfer performance of its roll-bond absorber plate was also validated by outdoor steady-state tests. Then, the steady-state numerical models were used to simulate the performance of the PVT prototype in TRNSYS. By comparing the simulation and experimental results, two robust models were selected which have their own advantages in charactering the thermal and electrical properties of the PVT collector. Through validating the numerical models with experimental data, the deviation between the simulated and the measured values was further reduced. In addition, a complete photovoltaic thermal–domestic hot water (PVT-DHW) system with such PVT collectors was developed in TRNSYS, by which the annual system output and efficiency were predicted and analysed. Abstract: Snow cover is a common and relatively stable land cover condition in winter for cold north regions in China. Snow cover has significant effects on water and heat transfers in frozen soil; it needs to be considered in the study of frozen soil water–heat coupled movements. On the basis of previous research results and physical process analysis of water and heat movements in snow cover and soil, a snow cover–soil union water–heat coupled movements model is established in this paper. The numerical simulation was conducted by using a finite difference method. The results indicate that the simulated values have a similar trend to the measured values and the numerical simulation had big relative errors. However, the average absolute errors of the total and liquid moisture content in frozen soil were all less than 4%, and that of the frozen soil temperature was 1.37 °C. The errors of the numerical simulation were still within the acceptable range. Thus, the snow cover–soil union water–heat coupled movement model constructed in this paper is rational. The study of thermal conductivity anisotropy is of great importance for more accurate heat flow calculations, geodynamic studies, development and utilization of hot dry rock, and simulation of heat transfer in geological reservoirs of nuclear waste, and so on. To study the thermal conductivity anisotropy of rocks, 1158 cores from 60 boreholes in East China were tested for thermal conductivity, including thermal conductivity values parallel to (λ∥) and perpendicular to (λ⊥) structural planes of basalt, mudstones, gneisses, sandstones, carbonates, evaporites, and metamorphic rocks. The thermal conductivity anisotropy is not obvious for sand, clay, and evaporate, and the average anisotropic factors of 1.19 ± 0.22, 1.18 ± 0.17, and 1.18 ± 0.17 for tuff/breccia, granitoid and contact metamorphic rocks, respectively, indicate that these three rocks have strong anisotropy characteristics. Finally, the effect of thermal conductivity anisotropy on heat flow is studied and discussed in detail, showing that the results of thermal conductivity tests have a significant effect on the calculation of heat flow and thermal structure, and the data show that a deviation of about 10% in thermal conductivity causes a deviation of about 11% in heat flow, which may lead to a misperception of deep thermal structure studies. The regular and anisotropic characteristics of thermal conductivity of various rocks in Eastern China obtained in this paper can provide parameter support for projects such as heat flow calculations, thermal structure studies, and geothermal resource development and utilization. The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) had been under major upgrading from 2020 to 2021 in China. In this campaign of major upgrading, the new lower tungsten divertor is successfully installed to achieve the targets of long pulse and high β H-mode plasma operation. High temperature and high pressure Divertor primary heat transfer system (DIV PHTS) is also developed to remove the plasma deposition heat load on the Divertor. This paper presents a description of the design and construction of DIV PHTS for EAST Tokamak. Starting from the requirements specified in the Technical Specifications of DIV PHTS, the process to meet the Divertor cooling and baking requirement is designed and validated by the supported thermal-hydraulic analysis. Then, the piping stress analysis under different types of load combinations is performed to verify the structural design requirements. General layout design is also performed based on the component requirement and the allocated space in the EAST Tokamak hall. In this paper, the thermal transmission capability (thermal insulation) and the moisture transmission characteristic (evaporative resistance) of the working ensemble for Chinese hot coal miners (from lining Anju coal mine, a typical hot coal mine in China) were measured and analyzed using a thermal sweating manikin ("Newton") in a climatic chamber. It is found that the thermal insulation of the old (used) mining ensemble worn for one year changes slightly from the new one, but the evaporative resistance decreases about 15%; there are notable differences of local thermal insulation and local evaporative resistance of the mining ensemble among different body zones; the thermal insulation and the evaporative resistance of the mining ensemble change slightly under different thermal conditions, but vary significantly under different humid conditions. The measured data of thermal insulation and the evaporative resistance can provide technical and data support for mining ensemble design, and also are valuable data for evaluating thermal strain of workers in hot coal mines. The rapid development and large-scale penetration of wind power would bring about substantial environmental benefits by substituting fossil fuel-based thermal power generation. In this paper, the environmental co-benefits synergized with energy saving benefit of wind power penetration in China were quantified. Moreover, the regional distribution of environmental co-benefits was mapped by considering the baseline emission factor of each region. Based on the co-benefits analysis results, the wind power deployment pathways were designed to enlarge the environmental co-benefits in the whole country level. The results show that the CO 2 , SO 2 , NO x , and PM 2.5 emissions reduced and water consumption saved due to wind power penetration account for respectively 2.58%, 2.71%, 2.66%, 1.58%, and 2.34% of total environmental emissions and water consumption from the whole power generation sector in China. In view of regional distribution, the environmental co-benefits of wind power to the power system is not proportional to the amount of fossil-fueled power that it displaces. The penetration of wind power results in the largest environmental co-benefits in the North China grid. The Northwest China grid has a higher environmental alleviating potential compared with the Northeast China grid even though the two regions has an equal magnitude of wind power penetration. Scenario analysis suggests that lowering the proportion of thermal power in power generation structure and the transmission of bundled wind power and thermal power from the north to the load centers are promising ways in enlarging the environmental co-benefits of wind power penetration. At present, China's high-speed rail is in a period of rapid development. Most of the refrigerants used in Chinese motor train units at this stage are still R134a and R407c, which have an impact on the environment. In response to the environmental protection concept of green travel, it is of great significance to study the air conditioning system of motor train units using CO2 refrigerant. Using CFD simulation analysis technology, the heat transfer performance of the air side of the CO2 finned tube evaporator used in the air conditioning system of the motor train unit is studied. We select the air outlet temperature, pressure drop, heat transfer factor, and resistance factor as the objective function, in addition, monitoring points are set up in the air flow channel to monitor the turbulent flow field and pipe wall pressure. Our research shows that the cooling capacity of the CO2 evaporator can reach up to 29.76 kW, which can meet the heat exchange required in the air conditioning system of the motor train unit. In order to obtain a better structure and the conditions of the heat transfer effect, structural optimization was conducted. The simulation results demonstrate several trends: (i) With the augment of the air inlet velocity, the cooling capacity of the evaporator increases and the heat exchange effect improves; when the air inlet ve > 2.2 m/s, the effect of continuing to augment ve on heat exchange is weak. (ii) Following appropriate reduction of the diameter of the heat exchange tube, the wind resistance is reduced and the cooling capacity of the evaporator is improved. (iii) With the enlargement of the fin spacing, the turbulent motion in the flow channel can be fully developed, there is a peak in the change in the heat exchange tube area optimization factor, and the optimal fin spacing is between 1.6 mm and 1.7 mm; at this time, the average turbulent kinetic energy of the air side is larger and the turbulent dissipation rate is smaller. Due to issues such as heat accumulation, the site area, and project investment, the reasonable determination of the hole spacing for heat exchangers has become one of the key design points of the ground-coupled heat pump system. Based on the definition of heat penetration in heat transfer and the research method of the inverse problem, a direct algorithm of the heat penetration distance in the aquifer was proposed using the analytical solution to the mathematical model for one-dimensional heat convection–conduction problems. Taking a vertical ground-coupled heat pump project in Hefei, Anhui Province, China, as an example, a three-dimensional hydro-thermal coupling numerical simulation model was established, and the influence radius during the refrigeration and heating periods under the action of a single borehole heat exchanger was determined. Comparing the heat penetration distance with the influence radius, the results show that the relative errors of the results obtained by the two methods are less than 10%, which verifies the rationality and effectiveness of the calculated penetration distance in the aquifer. At the end of the cooling or heating period, the heat penetration distance in the aquifer is calculated to be 7.59 m. Therefore, the proposed method is straightforward and efficient, which can provide a convenient approach to determining the reasonable hole spacing of the heat pump system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biomass is the fourth largest energy source in the world; it is easy to store and can be converted into various kinds of renewable energies. The biomass cogeneration system is an important way to utilize biomass energy, especially in northern China. At present, there are many problems in biomass power plants in China, such as high latent heat loss of chimney and cooling towers, low power generation efficiency, and thermal efficiency. In order to solve this problem, this paper introduces low vacuum circulating water heating technology in the biomass cogeneration system, and expounds the differences between China and Western countries in biomass power plants. Based on this background, the technology is redesigned and reformed to make it more suitable for the biomass fuel varieties in the power plant location, and realize the localization of technology and the expansion of scale. The application of this improved technology in China's biomass cogeneration project is analyzed. Based on the biomass cogeneration project in the DC County of China, the analysis confirms that the designed low vacuum circulating water heating technology is suitable for biomass power generation projects with agricultural and forestry wastes as raw materials, and its application can greatly improve the heat utilization efficiency of the whole cogeneration system. At the same time, in order to estimate the possibility of profitable investment when the key financial parameters change, the financial risk is analyzed. The results show that the probability of 90% net present value (NPV) in 15 years is between 355.28 million RMB and 623.96 million RMB, and the internal rate of return can reach 17.7%. Heat and mass transfer of pyrolytic hydrocarbon fuels at supercritical pressure has important implications for regenerative cooling technology in advanced engines. Based on the detailed chemical kinetic mechanism of China No. 3 jet fuel (a.k.a. RP-3), the heat and mass transfer of RP-3 in a horizontal square cooling channel under asymmetric heating and buoyancy at supercritical pressure is investigated numerically. The results show that buoyancy induces secondary flow. The secondary flow enhances the heat and mass transfer between the near wall region and the core flow field, which can effectively improve the utilization level of fuel heat absorption capacity and suppress the carbon deposition on the surface of the cooling channel. In the case of bottom heating, the dramatic change in fuel density with fuel pyrolysis induces the strongest secondary flow, resulting in the highest fuel heat absorption capacity and the least carbon deposition. In addition, as the operating pressure increases, the buoyancy effect becomes stronger duo to fuel pyrolysis, which is significantly different from the buoyancy effect in the non-cracking zone. Under the buoyancy effect, the increased operating pressure enhances the secondary flow intensity, which reduces the heated wall temperature and suppresses the carbon deposition on the cooling channel surface. China is a large agricultural country that is leading worldwide in the annual number of agricultural products and exports. However, the growth and harvest of fruits and vegetables are greatly affected by geographical conditions, climate and other factors, which will lead to their rotting in peak season and shortages in the off-season. Therefore, it is necessary to vigorously promote the development of drying technology. The explosion puffing technology at low temperature and high pressure is a kind of compound drying technology which can enable the puffed product to obtain the advantages of honeycomb, good rehydration, a short running time, etc. With the guidance of the theory of heat and mass transfer and relevant thermodynamics laws, this study has established high-pressure extruding technology in low-temperature heating; expanded the two-phase theoretical model, using mass conservation and the law of the conservation of energy to analyze the coupled heat and mass transfer process and influencing factors; and researched the influence of the operation temperature, pressure and time on the properties of dried fruit. In order to solve the practical problems on the utilization of a burning cave, such as overheated floor, uneven heat distribution, and serious heat lose, a hot water heating system integrated with a burning cave has been designed based on the principle of energy cascade utilization. However, there is no prediction and calculation method for designing this combined heating system. In this paper, through theoretical calculation, the response formula of time–temperature on the hot water heating system changed with the radiation intensity on biomass fuel combustion layer has been deduced and verified by experimental data. Besides, the impacts of the radiation temperature on fuel combustion layer, the height of fuel layer, pipe diameter, pipe spacing and water flow velocity on the heat transfer performance of this heating system have been respectively discussed. The aero-engine manufacturing industry is booming in China, while sustainability is neglected. For example, the grinding superalloy part uses a high-volume low-velocity flood delivery strategy for grinding cooling, which is harmful to health and the environment, consumes more resources and energy, emits more CO 2 and increases production costs. To achieve sustainability in the aero-engine manufacturing industry, it is worth considering eliminating coolant from the grinding to reduce the environmental impact and production cost. In this study, a novel oscillating heat pipe grinding wheel (OHP grinding wheel) is introduced to enhance the heat transfer in the eco-benign grinding process. The core concept is to design, fabricate particular oscillating heat pipes and position them in the grinding wheel so that the inside oscillating heat pipes transfer out the heat directly through the grinding wheel to avoid heat gathering, lower the grinding temperature, and suppress the thermal damages. Moreover, the use of harmful coolant can be diminished or even avoided, and an eco-benign grinding technology can therefore be achieved. Holistic sustainability analysis is then conducted in this paper. Spectral selective absorption film (SSAF), a solar control film, has a special energy-saving mechanism. In the previous studies of SSAF coated glazing systems, thermal parameters (global thermal transmittance (U) and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)) calculated by traditional algorithms were not verified. In order to evaluate the energy-saving effect of SSAF coated glazing systems accurately, U and the SHGC were calibrated and then used for energy consumption simulation. Firstly, the simulation models of the heat transfer process of SSAF coated glazing systems were established by COMSOL Multiphysics, considering simplified linear attenuation of radiative transfer. After being validated, the simulation models were used for the calibration of U and SHGC by the Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) model. As a result, the calibration coefficients of U and SHGC are 1.126 and 1.689, respectively. Secondly, the thermal parameters of SSAF coated glazing systems calibrated by the calibration coefficients were used for a building energy consumption simulation case. The result showed that the inner surface is the best coating position for single glazing systems (SG), while the outer surface is the best coating position for double glazing systems (DG) in hot summer and cold winter zone, hot summer and warm winter zone and the moderate zone of China. The fluid flow and heat transfer of hydrocarbon fuel play a significant role in developing regenerative cooling technology for advanced aeroengines. Numerical simulations have been conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of China RP-3 aviation kerosene with pyrolysis in a 3D, 90° bend, square cooling channel around the cavity flame-holder of a scramjet. A chemical kinetic model, composed of 18 species and 24 reactions, was adopted to simulate the fuel pyrolysis process. Results indicate that the secondary flow enhances the mixing of the fluid, thus, the transports of heat and components are improved between the near-wall region and main flow field in the curved channel. Compared with a straight cooling channel, fuel conversion and heat-absorbing capacity are higher, and the heat transfer is effectively enhanced in a curved cooling channel. In addition, with the increasing inlet mass flow rate and the decreasing radius of curvature, the velocity of the secondary flow increases. The heat and components are easily transferred from the near-wall region to the main flow. The non-uniformities of fuel temperature and conversion at the cross section decreases, which is helpful for improving the utilization of the level of fuel heat-absorbing capacity, and beneficial for enhancing the heat transfer. With the increase of residents' requirements for the living environment, the current indoor thermal environment cannot meet the needs of modern rural residents who live in the northeast of Sichuan, China. Passive energy-saving strategies can not only improve the thermal performance of envelopes but also create high economic benefits. Evaluating the application effect of passive energy-saving strategies for traditional dwellings can provide a guide for local residents and policy makers to select rational passive strategies. Seven energy-saving strategies are proposed based on the current local building construction and heat transfer model, and then their energy-saving potential is evaluated by using EnergyPlus and the dynamic investment payback period method. Results show that adding exterior envelope insulation and setting on-top sunspaces on the roof simultaneously can save 83.9% of building energy consumption. However, the most economic energy-saving strategy is only employing exterior envelope insulation for local traditional dwellings when considering the economy. It can save 842 CNY/m2 during 100 years and its dynamic investment payback period is 14.1 years. In addition, building orientation also affects the energy-saving effects and the energy-saving rate can be increased by 8.4% under the optimal orientation (facing south) compared with the worst orientation (facing west). Abstract: In cold region, precipitation, air temperature and snow cover significantly influenced soil water and heat transfer, and thus freezing–thawing processes of active soil layer. On the basic of physical processes of water and heat balances and their transfers in the snow covered soil, a water-heat coupling model for snow cover and its underlying soil layers was established in this paper. Numerical solution of the model was conducted by a full-implicit finite volume method. Observation data of snow cover depth, soil water content and active soil depth at two typical sites in the northeast of Three-River Source Region of China were selected for model calibration and validation. The results indicate that the model can capture soil freezing–thawing processes at the two sites. Simulated results reveal that variations of soil water content, soil temperature and soil freezing depth depend on climate conditions of air temperature, precipitation and snow cover as well. In comparison of the simulated results at two sites, we know that thick snow cover hinders temperature transfer from air to soil, resulting in prolonging the time lag between air and soil temperatures, decreasing variations of soil temperature and soil water content and reducing soil freezing depths of active soil. Abstract: A number of radiant heating/cooling systems have been applied in Mainland China in recent years for its improved thermal comfort and inherent energy saving potential. Because the systems require relatively higher temperatures for cooling and lower temperatures for heating, many natural low-grade energy sources can be directly or indirectly used. However, because of a lack of information about prior practical projects, a number of difficulties in design, construction and management of the systems have been encountered, and energy efficiency is not necessarily achieved in all situations. This paper reviews the practical applications in four major projects involving different building types located in different climatic cities and presents the associated considerations in system design. Other factors affecting the energy efficiency of the systems are identified, such as the spatial convection and radiation heat transfer processes in indoor environments and the envelope thermal properties. Further studies are needed to achieve system optimization and to realize the full energy saving potentials of radiant systems by developing analytical design methods and monitoring the actual energy use of such systems in completed projects. Abstract: In this paper, the yearly performance of a library building located in Harbin, China, equipped with a ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) system, was simulated and its ground heat exchanger (GHE) was designed in the TRNSYS 17 environment. Utilizing the hourly load simulation results, a TRNSYS model was developed to analyze underground thermal balance of the entire system, obtaining the 30-year operation conditions of the reference building. According to simulation results, annual average storage temperature, the highest and lowest inlet temperature of the heat pump, factors that influence efficiency of the system, change as the number of boreholes changes. Abstract: The groundwater heat pump (GWHP) system utilizes groundwater as alternative renewable and clean energy source for space heating and cooling, which is an open-loop system that withdraws water from a production well, passes it through a heat exchanger and discharges the water into an injection well. By utilizing the relatively stable temperature of groundwater, GWHP system can work with a higher coefficient of performance. It is necessary to evaluate the aquifer capacity for the proper design and application of GWHP. In this paper, a numerical method of underground heat transfer, energy balance method and thermal storage method were presented to calculate the load capacity of a unit area of shallow aquifer. The model results indicate that the numerical method, which is based on performance efficiency of groundwater heat pump, reflects the behavior of groundwater pumping and recharging processes, and better than energy balance method and thermal storage method, additionally it has the advantages of energy saving and environmental protect. The capacity is positively related to aquifer thickness. The final results show that it is easy for ground water recharging in alluvial and pluvial fan located at the piedmont, while load capacity is relatively smaller. Abstract: This paper presents numerical investigation on the ore-forming fluid migration driven by tectonic deformation and thermally-induced buoyancy force in the Chanziping ore district in South China. A series of numerical scenarios are considered to examine the effect of meteoric water precipitation, the dip angle of the faults, unconformity surface, and thermal input on the ore genesis. Our computations reveal that the downward basinal fluid flow driven by extensional stress mixes with the upward basal fluid driven by the thermal input from depth at the junction of two faults at a temperature of about 200 °C, triggering the precipitation of the Chanziping uranium deposit. Abstract: Water wall design is a key issue for supercritical Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler. On account of the good heat transfer performance, rifled tube is applied in the water wall design of a 600MW supercritical CFB boiler in China. In order to investigate the heat transfer and frictional characteristics of the rifled tube with vertical upward flow, an in-depth experiment was conducted in the range of pressure from 12 to 30MPa, mass flux from 230 to 1200kg/(m2 s), and inner wall heat flux from 130 to 720kW/m2. The wall temperature distribution and pressure drop in the rifled tube were obtained in the experiment. The normal, enhanced and deteriorated heat transfer characteristics were also captured. In this paper, the effects of pressure, inner wall heat flux and mass flux on heat transfer characteristics are analyzed, the heat transfer mechanism and the frictional resistance performance are discussed, and the corresponding empirical correlations are presented. The experimental results show that the rifled tube can effectively prevent the occurrence of Departure from Nucleate Boiling (DNB) and keep the tube wall temperature in a permissible range under the operating condition of supercritical CFB boiler. Abstract: 24 new recently measured heat flow data of Bohai bay basin are reported firstly here, combining all the heat flow data available of this region, the distribution pattern of present-day heat flow and its tectonic implications are presented in this paper. Generally, the heat flow data of the Bohai bay basin is still representative and the value ranges from 45mW/m2 to 90mW/m2, although the sites of measurement are sparse spatially and not cover the whole region well. Diverse statistical analysis is applied to this heat flow dataset for calculating the mean value and the results show that the average heat flow varies between 64 and 66mW/m2 by different methods. The mean heat flow of the Bohai bay basin is 64.4±8.1mW/m2 calculated by quality weighting mean square deviation statistics with 0.5°×0.5° geodetic coordinates. The distribution pattern of heat flow of the Bohai bay basin is characterized by high in the northeast and central parts but low in the southwest area, and the value within basin is higher than those of the surrounding mountain areas; we propose that this pattern is related with the crustal differential thinning and activities of the large ultra-crustal fault zones in this region. Additionally, the present-day heat flow of the Bohai bay basin is obviously larger than those of the western areas of the North China Craton (NCC), indicating the different thermal regime and thermodynamics of lithosphere in the eastern and western parts of the NCC. As the latest heat flow compilation of the Bohai bay basin, the results presented here provide some geothermal constraints on the destruction of the North China Craton. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Lightweight envelopes are widely used in modern buildings but they lack sufficient thermal capacity for passive solar utilization. An attractive solution to increase the building thermal capacity is to incorporate phase change material (PCM) into the building envelope. In this paper, a simplified theoretical model is established to optimize an interior PCM for energy storage in a lightweight passive solar room. Analytical equations are presented to calculate the optimal phase change temperature and the total amount of latent heat capacity and to estimate the benefit of the interior PCM for energy storage. Further, as an example, the analytical optimization is applied to the interior PCM panels in a direct-gain room with realistic outdoor climatic conditions of Beijing. The analytical results agree well with the numerical results. The analytical results show that: (1) the optimal phase change temperature depends on the average indoor air temperature and the radiation absorbed by the PCM panels; (2) the interior PCM has little effect on average indoor air temperature; and (3) the amplitude of the indoor air temperature fluctuation depends on the product of surface heat transfer coefficient h in and area A of the PCM panels in a lightweight passive solar room. Piston action can affect the thermal environment inside the tunnel by changing the air pressure and velocity. This is extremely unfavorable for tunnels in cold regions because it causes frost damage in cold season. Understanding the influence of piston action on the air temperature distribution inside the tunnel can help us determine the length and location of frost damage. In this paper, a heat transfer numerical model considering piston action is developed. And then, a high-speed railway tunnel in the northeast of China is taken as an example to explore the temperature distribution laws via computational fluid dynamic (CFD). Afterwards, the effects of air temperature outside the tunnel and train velocity on temperature distribution are analyzed. The results show that the piston action can accelerate the heat transfer between cold air outside and inside the tunnel, the anti-freezing length near tunnel entrance and exit must be extended based on the calculation result of existed empirical formula. Before the train enters the tunnel, the freezing length near tunnel entrance is 1158 m. After the train passing through the tunnel, the freezing length near tunnel entrance is between 1495 m and 1497 m when the air temperature outside the tunnel decreases from −1 °C to −15 °C. Under different train velocities (80 km/h, 130 km/h, 160 km/h, 200 km/h and 250 km/h), the freezing lengths near tunnel entrance are 1458 m, 1469 m, 1472 m, 1497 m, 1498 m and its near tunnel exit are 330 m, 342 m, 349 m, 356 m, 357 m, respectively. In the section of 50 m away from tunnel entrance, the air temperature near the train changes suddenly, while the air temperature far away from the train changes gently. After the train passing through the tunnel, the air temperature inside the tunnel is consistent to that outside the tunnel within a specific distance from entrance. The heat treatment of Nb 3 Sn coils of China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) central solenoid model coil (CSMC) has been completed at the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP). The brittle A15 phase material requires coil winding prior formation of the superconducting material, and the technology of "wind and react" has been used to manufacture Nb 3 Sn coil. The Nb 3 Sn coils were heat-treated under the argon atmosphere and the heat treatment was successful. Since the critical properties of Nb 3 Sn strongly depend on the heat treatment temperature, especially the uniformity of temperature, it is necessary to analyze the detailed temperature change process during the heat treatment. During the heat treatment, several thermocouples were arranged on the coil surface for temperature monitoring. At the same time, the heat transfer process of heat treatment and the distribution of the coil temperature field is theoretically analyzed and simulated. This study is aimed at carrying out investigations on a domestic gas field, located in Yanchang, China, with a view to optimize the natural gas purification process. The main objectives of this work are (i) to reduce the natural gas purification system's energy consumption and (ii) improve the existing purification levels. Process simulations were carried out using Aspen Plus™ software, and a comprehensive technical and economic analysis was carried out. The single-factor sensitivity analysis method was used to determine the parameters of absorption, such as the reflux ratio and number of stages. The heat transfer process was analyzed using the energy-saving method of the energy system, and a modified process was recommended. The optimization results show that the recommended system has better purification performance, the comprehensive energy consumption is effectively reduced, and the energy efficiency is improved by 9%. Recently, the structural insulated panels (SIPs) with the wood-based surfacing materials are developed in housing industry to increase the thermal efficiency of the wall system. In order to integrate the waterproof feature into SIPs, a newly designed GFRP reinforced squared tube sandwich panel (GSTPs) is introduced, where the Glass fibre reinforced polymers (GFRP) is utilized as surface material and the core is reinforced by the GFRP square tube. This paper focused on the thermal insulation performance of GSTPs. Both experimental, theoretical and numerical methods are employed to study their thermal insulation performance as roof panels. More specifically, the thermal conductivity of GFPR with three different core materials, including glass wool, Extruded polystyrene (XPS) and Polyurethane (PU) in the SIP, was first measured by hot plate apparatus (HPA) in the steady-state heat transfer tests. Then, the heat transfer coefficients of three type of GSTPs with above mentioned core materials are measured by guarding heat box (GHB) test. The theoretical and finite element (FE) method based numerical studies applied to conduct the heat transfer analyses on those SIPs. The accuracies of the theoretical and numerical studies are verified by comparing the obtained heat transfer coefficients with those from the experimental tests. Groundwater heat pump (GWHP) systems are central heating and cooling systems that utilize groundwater heat. With the rapid development of this technology in China, it has become imperative to study the changes in the ground environment, including the flow features, heat transfer characteristics and clogging caused by long-term recharge, during the operation of GWHP systems. In this paper, a mathematical model considering the effect of particle deposition was proposed to describe a GWHP system based on the typical geological and hydrogeological conditions (i.e., a dual-structure strata) in Wuhan, China. During research on a GWHP engineering project in the Baibuting Garden community, four groundwater flow conditions (including no flow, forward flow, reverse flow and cross flow) and two typical flow modes (continuous and flushing modes) were considered. The groundwater temperature and flow rate were measured through measuring wells, and a comparison between theoretical and actual values shows that this model can provide an easy yet effective way to describe GWHP engineering. The seepage and temperature fields both display periodic trends under the continuous flow mode and can be significantly affected by well flushing. The central area is marginally influenced by groundwater flow when compared with the surrounding areas; for instance, the temperature fluctuation at MW3 can reach 8.2 °C, while the fluctuation reaches 2.9 °C at MW1. Particle deposition can affect the parameters of the ground environment; we find considerable correspondence between the concentration of deposited particles and the porosity. Moreover, both the concentration of deposited particles and the porosity change by a large margin after flushing, especially in regions around pumping wells (the concentration of deposited particles can fluctuate by 108 g/L, and the porosity can change by 0.055). Trombe wall system is an effective passive solar heating, and phase change material can enhance its heat storage performance significantly. However, excessive heat loss during winter nighttime has been observed. Setting the curtain in air cavity can improve heat preservation of winter nighttime. The three-dimensional model of a phase change material-Trombe wall (TW-PCM) is established with FLUENT, and the influences of phase change temperature (PCT) and location of curtain/aluminum foil on thermal performance of the TW-PCM are obtained. It indicates that the total heat output reduces and the heating time extends for the TW-PCM, and the proportion of glass heat loss is over 50%. The heat efficiency of the TW-PCM in the nighttime are significantly improved for TW-PCM with the curtain (CTW-PCM). For a TW with an air cavity width of 0.15 m, when the thickness of circulation air cavity exceeds 0.07 m (turbulent flow), heat efficiency is higher. To promote the full combustion efficiency of a body cremation furnace during cremation, the temperature and velocity of cremation furnace in the process of body combustion are simulated by finite element model. Firstly, the simplified finite element analysis model of cremation furnace and its finite element software is introduced in this study, and then the flow model, heat transfer model, and combustion model needed in the heat transfer process are described. According to the requirements of the finite element model, the mesh generation process of the cremation furnace model and the numerical solution method are presented. Finally, the model used in this study is verified by the test and simulation results. The results show that the method is reliable. Besides, the design parameters of the temperature part and the combustion speed part of the furnace under six different working conditions are analyzed to further optimize the structure of the furnace. Oviraptorosaurs, a group of non-avian theropod dinosaurs from the Cretaceous of Asia and North America, left behind the most abundant and informative fossil evidence of dinosaur reproductive biology. Previous studies had suggested that oviraptorosaur reproductive biology represents an intermediate stage and exhibited unique modern avian traits. For instance, the adult-associated clutches were predominantly considered as evidence for brooding/thermoregulatory contact incubation (TCI) behaviors, whereas the hypotheses of laying or protection were neglected. Despite numerous oviraptorid egg clutches uncovered from China and Mongolia, their nest architecture and clutch arrangement were rarely investigated in detail. Here we present a comprehensive reconstruction of an oviraptorid clutch based on five new oviraptorid clutches from Jiangxi Province, China. A detailed examination of the new clutches reveals a partially-open oviraptorid nest that contains 3-4 rings of paired eggs (more than 15 pairs total) whose blunt end points toward the center devoid of eggs at an angle of 35-40°. Our detailed three-dimensional reconstruction indicates that the oviraptorid clutch has a unique architecture unknown from extant bird clutches, implying an apomorphic nesting mode. Such a unique nest architecture further contradicts the TCI hypothesis in oviraptorids, hindering sufficient heat transfer to the inner (lower) ring(s) of eggs. Moreover, the size of the new oviraptorid clutches (>30 eggs) is significantly larger than that of the adult-associated clutches (<22 eggs), raising the alternative hypothesis that the adult-associated clutches were uncompleted. This clue thus supports the hypothesis that the clutch-associated oviraptorid adults possibly represent females after an oviposition before a catastrophic sandstorm/flooding burial. Robust surface warming with distinct interdecadal variations has been observed in the offshore area of China and adjacent seas (hereafter, offshore China) during winter and summer of the period 1958-2014. Acceleration of this warming during 1980-99 at rates greater than the global mean warming rate was accompanied by a weakening of the East Asian monsoon (EAM) and a strengthening of the west Pacific subtropical high (WPSH). It was determined that the sea surface temperature (SST) variation in offshore China correlates very well with changes in the EAM wind on interdecadal time scales. It was also established that the enhanced oceanic lateral heat transfer, mainly attributed to the leading empirical orthogonal function (EOF1), weakening EAM wind mode, has a central role in robust interdecadal winter surface warming in offshore China. However, except for the effect of oceanic lateral heat transfer, the increased surface heat flux through radiative heating related to the third EOF (EOF3) strengthening EAM anticyclone wind mode (WPSH) in summer appears to have a greater contribution to interdecadal summer surface warming in offshore China. This study focused on the variation of the heat volume transported to the East China Sea (ECS) by the Kuroshio at its source area in spring, and investigated the possible effect of the Kuroshio heat transport (KHT) on the anomalous change of summer rainfall over eastern China. In the past 50 years, the KHT anomalies in spring presented distinct variations superimposed by significant quasi 2a and about 16a low-frequency oscillations. The variations of the KHT (enhancing) at the source area in spring can influence the sea surface temperature (lead to warming) in the ECS, which was in favor of inducing the atmosphere circulation anomalies (southwest wind anomaly) in South China with the subsequent convergence of water vapor over the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and finally tended to result in the variations (increase) of summer rainfall there. The analysis suggested that, as one of key factors modulating the thermal state of Chinese adjacent seas, the anomalous strengthening of the KHT in preceding period may be one of the major causes of the excessive summer rainfall over the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and visa versa, which is expected to directly influence local water resource and even the management. Aerodynamic roughness length zom is an important parameter for reliably simulating surface fluxes. It varies with wind speed, atmospheric stratification, terrain, and other factors. However, it is usually considered a constant. It is known that uncertainties in zom result in latent heat flux (LE) simulation errors, since zom links LE with aerodynamic resistance. The effects of zom on sensible heat flux (SH) simulation are usually neglected because there is no direct link between the two. By comparing SH simulations with three types of zom inputs, it is found that allowing zom temporal variation in an SH simulation model significantly improves agreement between simulated and measured SH and also decreases the sensitivity of the SH model to the heat transfer coefficient Ct, which in turn determines the linkage between zom and thermal roughness length zoh. Passive solar heating is an ideal choice in remote Tibet because of the laggard economy, poor transport condition, serious lack of conventional fossil energy and rich solar energy. The thermal performance of a model house is studied using a numerical method based on the real building construction and climate data while the effect of high altitude on heat transfer of building envelope is considered. Through analyzing heat loss of different parts, a retrofit scheme based on exterior envelope and south-facing glazing is introduced to decrease the heat loss and increase the direct-solar gain. The sensitive factors such as convective heat transfer coefficient, glazing type and WWR (area ratio of window to wall) are researched in detail. Based on fluctuational observations of three-component wind velocity ( u′, v′, w′) and temperature, T′, from a meteorological tower of 325 m located in Beijing, China, a number of turbulent linear correlation coefficients are calculated using a local scaling approach for turbulence statistics. The further applicability of this scaling is investigated by the formulation of similarity relationships for correlation coefficients of momentum transfer e.g., | r uw |, | r vw | and | r uv |, heat transfer e.g., | r uT |, | r vT | and | r wT |, and the ratios | r wT / r uw | and | r vT / r vw |. Under various stratifications, empirical similarity relationships for most of these correlation coefficients are derived to be function of a single local stability parameter and found to be in good agreement with experimental results. During 8–14 June 2000, a 500-hPa blocking event occurred over Mongolia and northern China (near 45°N, 108°E), which was the only case over this region in June since 1981. As the block developed, the initially weak low-level mei-yu front over southern China evolved into a system with strong baroclinity and subsequently moved south. The frontal passage over Taiwan caused temperatures to drop by 10°C, the largest in June over two decades. Using gridded analyses, manually analyzed weather maps, and satellite and surface data, the present study investigates the evolution of this mei-yu front under the influence of the block. The 925-hPa frontogenetical function is computed and effects of different processes are discussed. As the blocking event developed, concurrent ridge–trough amplification in the lower–midtroposphere produced a reversed thermal pattern. The lower-tropospheric high moved southward, and large-scale confluence and deformation were enhanced between the northerly flow and the prefrontal southwesterly flow. The location of the block, to the west-southwest of the Okhotsk Sea area, allowed it to affect the front over southern China and caused it to penetrate inside 20°N, unusual for the month of June. The distribution of the frontogenetical function indicated that the mei-yu frontogenesis and the maintenance of the front were attributed to both deformation and convergence. These two processes together counteracted the strong frontolysis along the frontal zone from diabatic effects, caused by evaporative cooling of frontal precipitation on the warm side and stronger sensible heat transfer (and daytime heating over less cloudy areas) on the cold side of the front. When deformation, convergence, and diabatic effects were all combined, the net total frontogenesis peaked slightly ahead of the frontal zone, thus contributing to the southward propagation of the front in addition to the advection by postfrontal cold air in the present case. When the front moved into the South China Sea, the cross-frontal thermal gradient diminished rapidly, mainly due to the frontolytic effect from sensible heat flux over warm waters. In this study, we employed a regional model to simulate the impact of urban expansion on monthly climate in Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. Two experiments were performed by prescribing two different land covers in the PRD region. One land cover represents vegetation in the 1970s which is derived from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) data with 24-category (hereafter referred to as NU). The other land cover represents the current urban condition which is derived from remote sensing data acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) in 2004 (hereafter referred to as HU). Using the two land cover datasets, monthly climate of October 2004 was simulated, which was a very dry season in the PRD region. The results obtained from the numerical simulation show a distinct difference in simulated shelter-level temperature, humidity, surface fluxes and the height of planetary boundary layer (PBL) with two different land cover data sets being specified. The maximum difference in simulated monthly mean temperature over urban areas was 0.9 °C. A large temperature difference was found in urbanized area in Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Shenzhen. The monthly mean relative humidity in urban areas decreased by 1.4% as a result of urban expansion (from 59.2% in NU to 57.8% in HU). The maximum decrease in mixing ratio was 0.4 g/kg in Guangzhou and Dongguan, whereas the maximum decrease in relative humidity was 2.4%. There was an increase of sensible heat flux in developed lands and the maximum increase was 90 W m−2. In contrast, latent hear flux in urban area decreased and the maximum decrease was 300 W m−2. In addition, the increase in mean height of PBL ranged from 20 to 80 m (HU compared with NU), and the maximum change of the height was 180 m over urban area in city of Guangzhou.
