- Abstract
There is an increasing interest and growing practice in Citizen Science (CS) that goes along with the usage of websites for communication as well as for capturing and processing data and materials. From an educational perspective, it is expected that by integrating information about CS in a formal educational setting, it will inspire teachers to create learning activities. This is an interesting case for using bots to automate the process of data extraction from online CS platforms to better understand its use in educational contexts. Although this information is publicly available, it has to follow GDPR rules. This paper aims to explain (1) how CS communicates and is promoted on websites, (2) how web scraping methods and anonymization techniques have been designed, developed and applied to collect information from online sources and (3) how these data could be used for educational purposes. After the analysis of 72 websites, some of the results obtained show that only 24.8% includes detailed information about the CS project and 48.61% includes information about educational purposes or materials.

- Abstract
This paper shows some research which analysed the didactic functionality of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) and Open Educational Resources (OERs). They were created by students from the Master's Degree in Information and Communication Technologies applied to language teaching and processing, at Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED, Spain). A thorough analysis has been carried out based on a virtual ethnography methodological framework, with a twofold qualitative dimension: on the one hand, by using the Atlas-Ti program and on the other hand by following a reticular, category-based social network analysis with UCINET and yED Graph Editor. Results show that the joint use of PLEs and OERs designed by students improves their digital competence, mainly in capabilities such as: accessing and searching for online information; articulating information needs; finding relevant information; selecting resources effectively; navigating between online sources; and creating personal information strategies. Furthermore, the scrutiny of the forums using the reticular social network analysis shows how the main benefits of the implementation of PLEs and OERs are: a student-centric approach, the development of personal knowledge management strategies and the formation of a self-regulated learning model.

- Abstract
Knowledge and learning are important driving forces for business success and competitiveness, especially in the knowledge-intensive organizations (KIO's) whose core business is to create and sell knowledge (e.g. education, R&D units, and consultancy organizations, among others). Previous works suggested one of the Critical Success Factor (CSF) of Knowledge Management (KM) practices is leadership, but only few of them referred it in a quantitative way. This paper aims to explore and explain the link between leadership and KM success. Results show a positive relation between the strategic dimension of leadership and the success of KM practices. This model was tested using Structured Equation Model (SEM). With this study we contribute to recognize the importance of leadership in order to improve the creation and dissemination of knowledge in a KIO's. In this way, these findings will help managers and teachers to increase the effectiveness of learning.

- Abstract
The aim of this paper is double. First, it provides a conceptual framework linking human resource management, organisational learning and knowledge management. Second, the paper builds a causal model and tests it with a sample of firms from the Spanish manufacturing industry, using a structural equation modelling technique. In particular, after the performance of a cluster analysis, a group of 72 learning firms is identified and used to test our model. Finally, major conclusions and implications for management are drawn and further avenues for research are suggested. (Contains 1 note, 6 tables, and 3 figures.)

- Abstract
The level of similarity of knowledge work across occupations and industries allows for the design of supportive information and communication technology (ICT) that can be widely used. In a previous ethnographically informed study, we identified activities that can be supported to increase knowledge maturing, conceptualized as goal-oriented learning on a collective level. The aim of this paper is to investigate the current state of support and success of these knowledge maturing activities and to contrast them with their perceived importance, to identify those which have the highest potential for being supported by ICT. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through telephone interviews with representatives from 126 organizations throughout Europe in a sample stratified according to size, sector, and knowledge-intensity. The activities that appear to be most promising are "reflecting on and refining work practices and processes," "finding people with particular knowledge or expertise," as well as "assessing, verifying, and rating information." Rich empirical material about how these activities are performed and also the issues that emerged and need to be managed were collected. Three clusters of organizations were identified: best performing organizations, people- and awareness-oriented organizations, and hesitant formalists. It was found that a balanced knowledge strategy that leaned toward personalization outperformed a codification strategy.

Despite the growing focus in coastal conservation practice toward scientific evidence-based decision-making, there remains a need for enhancing knowledge management and its implication in coastal management planning. In this review manuscript, bibliometric analysis in conjunction with network analysis is used to describe qualitatively and quantitatively the progress, trends and hot spots of coastal science in Moroccan Atlantic coast. In total, 4891 publications from 1971 to May 2021 were collected. The performance of publication covering annual outputs, document types, language of publication, mainstream journals, the impact of the research by research area, coastal habitat type and study area were investigated. Thereafter, co-word, co-authorship, co-country analysis and cluster analysis were conducted using VOSviewer software. The findings underscore a clear disparity in the research evolution. 52% of the total publications were produced between 2011 and 2021. 80% of them were published as journal articles. Journal of Materials and Environmental Science was the most active journal. Behind Morocco, France and Spain researchers have made the main contributions to this research area. 75% of publications have been limited to the coastlines and lagoons. In contrast, habitats such dayas and oasis have received little attention. Hydrobiology and ecology have being gradually deepened. The analysis also revealed a significant research bias against the south–central coastline, the regions of Moroccan Atlantic that have a high research need. This analysis suggests that future scientific effort on Moroccan Atlantic coastal ecosystems should relieve existing biases by increasing multidisciplinary integrated system research and encouraging inter-regional transfer of research resources to areas of low research effort, with a special emphasis on the critical research ecosystems in the southern coastline. Finally, some key recommendations were raised for strengthening the implementation of knowledge management within the concept of sustainable coastal management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GRADUATE education ,CONSTRUCTION industry education ,KNOWLEDGE management ,ECONOMIC demand ,MANAGEMENT - Abstract
University programs in Western countries must be accredited, and although several detailed conceptual methods have aimed to design new programs, no specific quantitative tools are currently available. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method to plan, design, or improve graduate degree programs based on selected requirements and market demands. This method involves two metrics, which are later combined into a final index. The first metric is the completeness index that evaluates the extent to which certain programs cover a discipline, in this case, construction management, according to a model using two variables: infrastructure life cycle and organizational breakdown. The second metric is the adequacy index, which measures how a program addresses the previously identified market demands. The final indicator (summary index) relates both indexes in a plot chart. In this study, the applicability of the method is illustrated by a sample of 21 construction management programs from prestigious universities and a survey of the Spanish construction industry. It can be applied in practice, not only in the construction management field, but also in other fields with an appropriate theoretical model that maps each field of knowledge and exploratory data that highlight the demands of each specific market. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the values that make up a knowledge-friendly culture in the consulting industry, in which the implementation of in-house knowledge management (KM) projects has positive performance outcomes. Design/methodology/approach – An exploratory analysis and a structural equation model were used on a sample of 100 knowledge workers (managers and internal KM project managers) in the consulting sector. Findings – The results of this study indicate that the values identified (trust, transparency, flexibility, collaboration, commitment, honesty and professionalism) bear a close positive relation to the success of the KM project implementation (innovation, employee satisfaction, capabilities, quality and productivity). These values are divided into three groups. Research limitations/implications – This research focuses on the consulting industry in Catalonia, Spain; further research will be required in order to apply the findings to other countries in the world. Practical implications – The study provides a better understanding of the cultural success factor in knowledge management initiatives. It offers a significant and practical advance in terms of systematizing KM in organizations. Originality/value – Knowledge management plays a crucial role in consulting companies, so it is necessary to determine the factors that contribute to its success, and particularly the factor of knowledge culture. However, few empirical studies have analyzed these values. The paper's main contribution is therefore identification of the core values of a knowledge-friendly culture and their impact on performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – SMEs may be trapped in a suboptimal stable equilibrium, as many overloaded managers are cutting back on their resources and may be over-investing in the development of exploration and exploitation processes rather than investing in mechanisms to facilitate an unlearning context. This paper proposes an unlearning context to manage an appropriate balance between exploratory processes and exploitative processes. Design/methodology/approach – This paper examines the relationship between and significance of two key factors of organisational learning (the exploration and exploitation of knowledge) within an unlearning context, and their effects on the improvement of the performance of SMEs. These relationships are examined through an empirical investigation of 229 SMEs in the Spanish metal sector. Findings – The results indicate that the effects of exploration and exploitation of knowledge on organizational performance are mediated through an unlearning context. Originality/value – The findings provide interesting insights into the drivers of organizational performance for SMEs using an unlearning context. SMEs need to provide for and support changes of perspective, of individual habits and in the framework for consolidating emergent understandings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of different technological aspects of organizations on Spanish high-technology firms' performance. Design/methodology/approach – The relationships studied are confirmed empirically using a structural equation model to demonstrate our hypotheses. The sample was selected from the database "Dun & Bradstreet España" in the year 2005 and includes 201 Spanish firms. CEOs were our main informants. Findings – The results obtained show that support from top managers will directly influence the organizational learning (OL) process and technological distinctive competencies (TDCs) (antecedents of corporate entrepreneurship) and that corporate entrepreneurship finally influences organizational performance. Research limitations/implications – The paper is exploratory in character, and its goal is to show whether interrelations exist between the variables. The main limitations are: the sectors chosen refer only to Spain; the analysis is cross-sectional in character; the study uses a single method and self-reports (CEOs). Practical implications – To obtain perfect adaptation of the firm to its environment, it is crucial that managers develop corporate entrepreneurship to improve high-technology sector firms' performance. The paper shows the important role of the top manager's support in developing TDCs and OL. Success in such issues is of vital importance to corporate entrepreneurship in the firm. Originality/value – The paper seeks to stimulate new lines of research on one variable (TDCs) and to relate it to other constructs, producing new relationships and observing their repercussions for the firm. ELECTRONIC commerce management ,SMALL business management ,STRATEGIC planning ,PSYCHOGRAPHICS ,TELECOMMUNICATION management - Abstract
Purpose -- E-business requires small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to seek both external and internal knowledge and to establish external and internal relationships with partners, such as customers and suppliers. This paper aims to describe a model that examines how knowledge management has an impact on the adoption of e-business, particularly in SMEs. Design/methodology/approach -- This paper reviews literature to identify relevant measures through a structural equation model, which is validated through an empirical investigation of 107 SMEs in the Spanish telecommunications sector. Findings -- The results show that, in order to implement e-business systems, companies need to provide and support the acquisition, sharing and application of knowledge as prior steps. Research limitations/implications -- Other factors that have not been included in this study are also likely to affect knowledge acquisition. Practical implications -- Organisations that engage in learning from their customers and suppliers not only test the effectiveness of a new direction of e-business, but also have the potential to design their e-business around what customers truly need and want, and as such gain a sustainable competitive advantage. Originality/value -- These results have implications for e-business managers in formulating policies and targeting appropriate organisational capabilities to ensure the effective adoption of e-business systems. This paper analyses the difficulties which Spanish student teachers have in solving the PISA 2003 released items. It studies the role played by the type and organisation of mathematical knowledge in the activation of competencies identified by PISA with particular attention to the function of contextual knowledge. The results of the research lead us to conclude that the assessment of the participant’s mathematical competencies must include an assessment of the extent to which they have school mathematical knowledge (contextual, conceptual and procedural) that can be productively applied to problem situations. In this way, the school knowledge variable becomes a variable associated with the PISA competence variable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUSTAINABLE development education , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges , *HIGHER education , *EDUCATION policy , *KNOWLEDGE management - Abstract
Sustainability issues in higher educational institutions have attracted increasing levels of attention from both the public and policy makers in recent decades. A number of previous studies have called for a more comprehensive integration of sustainable development into mainstream university operations and curricula. However, there is a lack of sufficient studies that investigate sustainable development in higher education in Spain. Therefore, the present paper has two goals: First, the study analyses the extent to which Spanish universities have implemented sustainability practices in their institutions. To accomplish this task, data were collected using a survey distributed to rectors and senior management at Spanish higher education institutions. The second goal is to examine the main factors that might explain the implementation of sustainability practices in Spanish universities. For this purpose, Pearson chi-square tests were used to analyse the data collected in the survey. Key findings show the slow rate of progress of many Spanish universities with regard to implementing sustainability practices, a fact which could indicate that there are clearly a number of obstacles to overcome. Additionally, there were no factors influencing the implementation of sustainability practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TECHNOLOGICAL innovations , *INTELLECTUAL property , *KNOWLEDGE management , *INFORMATION services management , *INVESTMENTS - Abstract
The significantly increasing evolution of private basic research in the U.S.A., Europe and Japan suggests a strong association between the capacity for innovation and research activities aimed strictly to work at the forefront of scientific knowledge. This paper explores the possible reasons for this association using a sample of 8,416 companies in the Spanish Technology Innovation Panel. Our results show that basic research enhances the ability of firms to assimilate, integrate and enhance other businesses' knowledge, thus leading consistently to higher levels of innovation. In addition, the article suggests that the ability to exploit external knowledge can condition the business strategy when deciding to operate in certain environments with more or less developed intellectual property systems. From the standpoint of public policy, results question the support for innovation activities closer to the market to the detriment of other policies with greater capacity to address externalities related to the development of human capital, reducing the uncertainty of investments, addressing information asymmetries between agents or solving the problems inherent in accidental technology spillovers. Abstract: Knowledge management (KM) has been studied extensively in recent years. Some consider knowledge to be the most strategically important resource for any company, but the fragmented, project-based and task-oriented nature of construction work makes it more difficult to implement KM in this sector. This paper presents a survey of perceptions of KM implementation in the Spanish construction sector and compares the results obtained from design and construction firms. Data were collected from the leading civil engineering companies in Spain. The survey found that the Spanish construction industry is aware of the benefits of KM but that systematic KM is not generally implemented. The findings clearly demonstrate that changes in organizational culture are critical to successful KM. The survey also revealed some distinctions between the KM perception of design firms and that of construction firms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study attempts to contribute to the scarce knowledge on how eco-design, and to broad extent sustainability, is connected to innovation driven companies. In particular, this cross sectional research verifies i) perception and knowledge of eco-design of the professionals from innovation driven companies in Spain, ii) specific eco-design strategies towards sustainability that innovation driven companies are integrating in their strategic plans and their application in the supply chain and iii) the companies’ future predictions on innovation and eco-design linkage. The methodology of this paper is based on a survey, developed defining measurable proxies for both eco-design and innovation approaches and conducted on 10,000 multidisciplinary professionals from Spanish innovation driven companies. The study shows that sustainability is a cardinal driver for innovation and that responses have specificities regarding company size, activity or respondent position. Innovation and eco-design strategies for the future aim to use materials with a lower environmental impact and to develop new concepts. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents an analysis of the influence of Organisational Learning (OL), as a process of knowledge creation, in the development of Technological Distinctive Competencies (TDCs). We also examine how the existence of certain organisational key variables in the OL process, not treated jointly from this perspective, positively affects OL and influences the generation of TDCs. The hypotheses proposed in this respect are tested on a sample of 140 Spanish industrial companies, applying a structural linear equation model according to the Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach. Our findings indicate that factors such as Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) of the organisation, its Learning Orientation (LO) and Information Technology (IT) have a positive impact on OL; whereas, the technological distinctive competences are the result of the OL. On the other hand, the EO of the organisation and the IT play an important role in the creation process of TDCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We developed two virtual communities of practice (Endobloc and Pneumobloc) to increase the interaction between general practitioners and nurses in primary care and hospital endocrinologists and pulmonologists. They were designed and developed using an existing web 2.0-based virtual network belonging to the local National Health System, and we quantitatively assessed the usefulness through the participation and use during the first 24 months after the launch in 2010. A total of 26,372 visits (47% Endobloc’s visits) and 2351 contributions (Endobloc’s contribution 38.9%) to both virtual communities of practice were registered during the first 24 months. The most popular sections were the e-Blog and the e-Consultations section in both virtual communities of practice, but some differences in the pattern of use in other sections were observed. Activity on the virtual communities of practice occurred throughout the day including weekends and holiday periods. We showed that virtual communities of practice are feasible under real-life clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the resource-based view approach, the knowledge frontier rests on the understanding of the process of creating and recreating distinctive competences. Moreover, in spite of the importance of knowledge assets, how innovation distinctive competences are generated in organizations is still an unknown factor. This research studies the effect of introducing knowledge management programs in the development of innovation distinctive competences, using two knowledge intensive industries. We establish a conceptual delimitation of knowledge management as a directive system through a set of principles and practices. The theoretical relationships we propose are tested in an empirical study carried out in 222 firms from the Spanish biotechnology and telecommunications industries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
