The article explores the newly discovered types of human emotions. Jonathan Haidt at the University of Virginia described the feeling of elevation tends to stimulate the vagus nerve which is linked to the release of a hormone called oxytocin, that produces warm, calm feelings. Interest, for psychologist Paul Silvia at the University of North Carolina, motivates people to learn and increase their knowledge. Sara Algoe of the University of North Carolina said that gratitude helps ignite a positive cycle of give and take.
