SUFFIXES & prefixes (Grammar) ,SEMANTICS ,VERBS ,LINGUISTS ,SYNTAX (Grammar) - Abstract
This paper investigates the syntax and semantics of two verbal suffixes in Indonesian. The two verbal suffixes are the suffix -kan and -i. Many linguists have studied the verbal suffix -kan, whereas the verbal suffix -i got less attention. This paper discusses the suffix -kan in conjunction with the suffix -i. The suffix -kan marks a causative verb, and the suffix -i a locative verb. A causative verb has A FIGURE object, whereas a locative verb has a GROUND object. The proposed analysis employing causative and locative alignment patterns showed a more revealing result of the main functions of the suffix -kan and -i. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PHILOSOPHY of language , *LINGUISTICS , *LANGUAGE research , *SCIENTIFIC language , *LINGUISTS - Abstract
This paper forms the introductory article to the special issue 'Expressing Evidence'. It lays out the background into the pragmatic and semantic research on evidence in language, and positions the collection of papers within this theoretical landscape. The collection stands out in its focus on conceptual issues involved, including the relation between 'grammatical' evidentiality and other constructions that signal evidence and the consequences of these connections for the semantic and pragmatic theory. The special issue aims to bring the work on evidentiality to the attention of a broad audience, including not only linguists, but also language scientists more generally, as well as philosophers of language and science. • Evidential restrictions come in many forms in the grammar. • Studying the relation between evidentials and other evidence signals raises important questions. • It is important to place evidentiality within pragmatics, philosophy of language and epistemology. LINGUISTICS ,POLYSEMY ,EXPLANATION ,LINGUISTS - Abstract
Meanings and linguistic shapes (or forms) do not always map onto each other in a unique way, and linguists have used all kinds of different terms for such situations: Ambiguity, polysemy, syncretism, lexicalization, semantic maps; portmanteau, cumulative exponence, feature bundling, underspecification, and so on. In the domain of lexical comparison, the term colexification has become generally established in recent years, and in the present paper, I extend this word-formation pattern in a regular way (cogrammification, coexpression; syllexification, syngrammification, synexpression). These novel terms allow us to chart the range of relevant phenomena in a systematic way across the grammar-lexicon continuum, and to ask whether highly general explanations of coexpression and synexpression patterns are possible. While there is no new proposal for explaining coexpression here, I will suggest that frequency of occurrence plays a crucial role in explaining synexpression patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our paper aims to reveal an inventory, an interpretation and a statistical analysis of Romanian names of plants which implicates the term „iarbă” (herb, grass), spread through the botanical terminology, a phenomenon which, as considered by E. Coşeriu is not enough highlighted (given that the individual speaker became creator of language / poetry whenever he named a flower. Botanical popular terminology has primarily a practical value, designating, distinguishing and categorizing elements of the plant kingdom within the given natural reign, but also has a high theoretical significance, especially for linguists, both by the ethimons to which they send back and by the metaphorical meanings the phytonims mostly have. Phytonys could be an important starting point in any kind of research, as they constitute a true linguistic and cultural heritage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ENGLISH language ,SEMANTICS ,ACCOUNTING ,LINGUISTS ,ARGUMENT - Abstract
In English the NP1 V NP2 construction typically involves arguments that are construed as Agent and Patient, or Subject and Object. It is associated with the notion of transitivity and analyzed accordingly, even when it exhibits only the syntactic properties of transitivity but not its semantic characteristics. This phenomenon is well-known and has been accounted for by linguists (Lakoff 1977; Hopper and Thompson 1980, among others) as a result of the absence of some prototypical transitive features in the utterance. This paper aims at demonstrating that the NP1 V NP2 structure has a semantic value and conveys a general abstract sense, of which prototypical transitivity represents only one particular realization whose occurrence is determined by the semantic and aspectual properties of the context. It will be argued that the sense of this construction can be explained through concepts that are not usually used in the description of transitive utterances, namely conjunction and disjunction. In some examples, the subject enters a relation of conjunction or disjunction with the object. In others, it is the other way round. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interest in both Identity and Academic Writing and Discourse has recently remarkably resurged. This has been so in both applied linguistics and discourse studies. As a result, many dominant ideas, practices, and paradigms have been criticized, challenged, or re-considered. The paper casts light on identity features and manifestations in the academic writing/research discourse of EFL/applied linguists in the context of a Saudi college. Identity research has been significantly under-researched in Majmaah University and KSA in general. The study seeks to answer:1. Do researchers' identities manifest themselves in the academic/research discourse of applied linguists and EFL scholars? If so, in what ways can these identities and self-manifestations appear in the academic and research discourse of applied linguists and EFL scholars? To what extent, if any, are applied linguists and EFL scholars/researchers aware that they represent themselves in their academic and research discourse/writing? We used a mixed-method design to amalgamate data from two primary instruments: questionnaire and interviews, which were analyzed using SPSS and thematic analysis together with some qualitative methods of analysis. Findings suggest that researchers do display themselves in research employing various identity, agency, and voice strategies/techniques and that they are broadly aware of this experience, that these identities are represented via a myriad of linguistic/discourse ways, and that they appear to be aware of this process. The implications of these identity manifestations and selfexternalizations for research discourse theory and practice, academic writing, language, and research education were explored and discussed. CORPORA ,ADJECTIVES (Grammar) ,LINGUISTS - Abstract
Philosophers and linguists currently lack the means to reliably identify evaluative concepts and measure their evaluative intensity. Using a corpus-based approach, we present a new method to distinguish evaluatively thick and thin adjectives like 'courageous' and 'awful' from descriptive adjectives like 'narrow,' and from value-associated adjectives like 'sunny.' Our study suggests that the modifiers 'truly' and 'really' frequently highlight the evaluative dimension of thick and thin adjectives, allowing for them to be uniquely classified. Based on these results, we believe our operationalization may pave the way for a more quantitative approach to the study of thick and thin concepts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SEMIOTICS , *COMMUNICATION in art , *AESTHETICS , *SIGN language , *LINGUISTIC analysis , *LINGUISTS - Abstract
The paper addresses the concept of artistic communication as a type of semiotic interaction in the discourses of art. Semiotic methodologies for modelling the sign and the communicative act, developed in the works of Gottlob Frege, Gustav Shpet, Jan Mukařovský, Roman Jakobson, Juri Lotman, Umberto Eco, Suren Zolyan, and some other semioticians, are discussed with a focus on the models of aesthetic sign and the corresponding models of semiosis in relation to artistic systems. The study focuses on the discourses of verbal art in its various manifestations (poetry, prose, drama, performance, spoken word, etc.) as material for a linguistic analysis of artistic communication. The paper specifically discusses the linguistic representations of artistic discourse within a model of aesthetic semiosis. The resulting model of artistic communication in verbal art is presented as a synthesis of Jakobson's scheme of communicative act and its important specification in Lotman's model of "literary communication". Based on the existing models of sign, semiosis, and communication (taking Jakobson's scheme as the main framework), a synthetic, linguo-aesthetic model of artistic communication is outlined, considering together the linguistic, semiotic, and aesthetic parameters of the artistic act. It is widely held that there are important differences between indicative conditionals (e.g., "If the authors are linguists, they have written a linguistics paper") and subjunctive conditionals (e.g., "If the authors had been linguists, they would have written a linguistics paper"). A central difference is that indicatives and subjunctives convey different stances toward the truth of their antecedents. Indicatives (often) convey neutrality: for example, about whether the authors in question are linguists. Subjunctives (often) convey the falsity of the antecedent: for example, that the authors in question are not linguists. This paper tests prominent accounts of how these different stances are conveyed: whether by presupposition or conversational implicature. Experiment 1 tests the presupposition account by investigating whether the stances project—remain constant—when embedded under operators like negations, possibility modals, and interrogatives, a key characteristic of presuppositions. Experiment 2 tests the conversational‐implicature account by investigating whether the stances can be cancelled without producing a contradiction, a key characteristic of implicatures. The results provide evidence that both stances—neutrality about the antecedent in indicatives and the falsity of the antecedent in subjunctives—are conveyed by conversational implicatures. False friends are the result of language interference on a lexical level. They have been studied in various language combinations and from various aspects, often resulting in different classifications and subtypes. The paper highlights the issues related to false friends from English and French into Latvian in the interpreting scene and considers the current lexical and semantic processes in the Latvian language. Research shows that the number of deceptive loans in Latvian has increased considerably during this century. The diachronic change of false friends may reflect the need for updated lexicographic resources on false friends, since they are an important tool for distinguishing them. However, false friends also exist on an idiomatic level. The discourse on false friends has been assessed through an analysis of a survey that was delivered to Latvian interpreters working in European Union institutions and in the Latvian local market. The study and conclusions may be of interest to linguists, interpreters and translators as well as language teachers and learners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the linguistic imaginary that unfolds in Léon Clédat’s Grammaire raisonnée de la langue française (1894) and Ferdinand Brunot’s La pensée et la langue (1922). These works construct an opposition between a spontaneous evolution of language and a development constrained by the codifications of grammarians, an opposition that can be found among several linguists of the same period and that can be linked to the theme of the “vie du langage”, which entered France at the end of the 19
th century. The analysis of the treatment of the grammatical rule in Clédat and Brunot highlights a distinction between “natural” and “artificial” linguistic facts and invites us to question what, according to these authors, would allow us to access the “truth” of language: popular productions and literary productions enjoy a particular status in their work in this respect. This paper discusses how combining research in meter, syntax and information structure can enhance our understanding of the syntax of a given historical text and help provide insights into the relation between metrical prominence and information structure. The contribution illustrates two case studies conducted on historical English texts: the Old English Beowulf and the Early Middle English Ormulum. I argue that integrating an investigation of meter into the study of both information structure and syntax can refine the methodological tools available to the historical linguist and philologist. The complex role of academic language and learning (ALL) professionals in higher education is poorly understood, even though it contributes to key outcomes such as improved study skills, academic language enhancement, curriculum development and student retention. In this paper, we explore the multiple professional identities of people working in this field. Ten ALL practitioners employed in Australian universities took part in semi-structured interviews exploring their roles and the contextual constraints and affordances of their work. We elaborate on eight discrete subject positions that emerged from the participants' data: the collaborator, the relationship manager, the applied linguist, the teacher, the content (non) expert, the academic, the strategist, and the expense. We draw on a critical realist frame to articulate the interplay between structure and individual agency within these identities, highlighting the range of expertise that ALL practitioners bring to the role. LEADERSHIP ,SUSTAINABLE development ,LINGUISTS ,TERMS & phrases ,TRANSLATORS - Abstract
Research question: This paper studies the roles of Terminology Leadership (Filipovic 2012, 2015; Filipovic & Vuco, 2012; Filipovic & Djordan, 2018) and Terminology Management model (Jernudd & Neustupny, 1987, 1991; Jernudd 1993, 1997 in Antia, 2000, p.3; Spolsky, 2004, 2009, 2012) in the implementation of terminology policy and planning in Serbia, and the sustainable development of Serbian scientific and technical terminology. Motivation: As in almost all standard-language cultures (Quirk, 1990), the Serbian language policy is top-down oriented, i.e., it follows the language management model. In this model, all decisions regarding the language, including terminology decisions, are made by linguists - language planners, without taking into account the opinions of professional and academic communities, i.e., the primary creators and users of terminology. Newer European terminology guidelines, especially the widely accepted UNESCO Guidelines for Terminological Policies (2005, p.3), however, propose that terminology work should be approached both top-down, i.e., on the level of political decision-making (following the terminology management model), and bottom-up, i.e., on the level of professional associations and other terminology stakeholders (following the complementary model of terminology leadership). Idea: The idea behind this paper is to investigate to what extent the terminology leadership model and the bottom-up orientation in the Serbian terminology policy and planning are recognized and accepted by various groups of stakeholders in comparison with the dominant language management model. Data: The data regarding the perspectives of two groups of terminology stakeholders (technical translators and professional / academic community) towards the state of the Serbian subject-field terminology and terminology management were collected, analyzed, interpreted and compared. Tools: The data were collected through two surveys on terminology work (Andjelkovic, 2018). While the first survey focuses on translators' perspective on terminology management, the second survey examines the attitude of the academic community towards the terminology state of their own subject field: management. Findings: The surveys' results confirm that both groups of terminology stakeholders recognise the importance of collaborative and cooperative work of linguists and subject field specialists in terminology policy making, planning and implementation, and thus do not regard linguists (i.e., language planners) as exclusive language and terminology decision-makers. The results also indicate, however, that there is still a very strong influence of standard-language ideology and the top-down oriented language policy. Contribution: The paper suggests a change in the implementation of the Serbian terminology policy and planning that is more in line with the European terminology Guidelines (UNESCO, 2005). The paper discusses the beginnings of Polish and Slavic linguistics at the Univertsity of Wroclaw directly after World War II. It was created by young scholars, linguists, Slavicists and Polonists, who gained their education and academic degrees at the Jagiellonian University and the John Casimir University in Lviv. This group included primarily S. Rospond, L. Ossowski, W. Kuraszkiewicz, S. Bąk, all educated before the war, as well as A. Furdal, much younger than the others and educated already after the war. These scholars received their education under the guidance of the best Polish linguists, Slavicists, Polonists, and Indo-Europeanists. In addition, the paper presents basic information about preparations made in Cracow during the war, to create Polish and Slavic studies at the University of Wroclaw. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LINGUISTIC change ,MIDDLE age ,LINGUISTICS ,EVERYDAY life ,LINGUISTS - Abstract
This paper elaborates on the problem of the traditional terms of experts and lay people. Language is a fundamental component of everyday life and all individuals react to language issues by using language itself. The paper contests the claim that lay people do not exist in the field of linguistics. There must be dealt with innovative concepts, such as professional and amateur, because the "lay people" (as a considerable amount of studies have investigated) are well aware of processes concerning language issues and thus generate their own kind of "linguistic theory". The task of linguists is to scrutinize such theories, which form the basis for the understanding of linguistic change and the formation of language norms. The line of argument presented here is arranged in chronological order: starting in antiquity, light will be shed on the meaning of the term "lay people" in cultural history. Special emphasis will be put on the Middle Ages, the early modern age and the modern period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hedging has become a topic of interest among discourse-oriented linguists. The paper will discuss ways in which the term "hedge" has been understood and defined in the literature within the academic writing discourse. As epistemic devices with significant characteristics, hedges are often seen as features in academic writing practices that may cause problems, being often a serious source of pragmatic failure in written discourse in a foreign language. It is suggested that the appropriate use of hedging, which clearly requires subtlety and awareness of pragmatic competence of written discourse, is utterly important in avoiding "communicative failure" (Thomas, 1983) and allowing authors to find a way of expressing their true voice in a target discourse. The topic of this paper is transition to first-name basis (przejście na ty) in Polish, which one of the most important research topics in the field of Polish linguistic politeness. The transition to first-name basis can be seen as a phenomenon of democratization in language, because, as some of the Polish linguists describe, it creates a sense of equality, which is one of the basic elements of democracy. The results of a multi-stage survey proved that, in general, Polish people positively evaluate the contemporary tendency of faster transition to first-name basis. The analysis of the comments from the questionnaire survey showed that many people consider this tendency as a positive phenomenon in linguistic communication and treat it as an effective way of reducing the unnecessary distance which exists between interlocutors. However, it is worth keeping in mind that there are also negative effects of an inconsiderate decision to move to first-name basis, as mentioned by some of the survey respondents. This study has shown that the combination of several methods allows researchers to take a fresh perspective on the dynamic process of democratization in language and its perception among the users of a given language. The term contrastive grammar is still ambiguous. In this paper we trace the unjustified synonymy of terms (confrontative grammar, comparative grammar, contrastive grammar) which lead to controversy among linguists and we attempt to introduce appropriate clarifications to explain the phenomenon. We can state that this linguistic direction is quite new, and its metalanguage is still in the process of development and formation. When studying contrastive grammar in the modern scientific functional-communicative paradigm, the focus of attention is directed to the issues of pragmalinguistics, that is the research, in addition to the actual meanings, of the semantics of linguistic units for designating objects of the environment, also the speech-thinking activity of speakers who use these units and listeners who interpret them; the possible situations of their application; the study of "language in context"; language research, taking into account the goal that is planned to be achieved in the communication process; the wide multidimensionality of the interpretation of the statement; the study of interactive means, taking into account grammatical meanings. The main category of pragmalinguistics is the category of evaluation, and therefore, the issue of contrastive grammar and contrastive description of languages is important to consider in the focus of the paradigm of the category of evaluation; in particular, this concerns the manifestation of each grammatical category. In the current context of globalization, the use of a widely known linguistic code becomes a requirement for maintaining the economic, political and trading relations between different nations around the world. Considering the phenomenal spread of the English language that contributed to its qualification as a “global language”, the aim of this paper is to establish what makes a language to be international. To this purpose, I discuss different sets of criteria elaborated by various researchers and I argue that the main test for classifying a language as “international” is not the mere number of its speakers, but the number of users who learn to speak it in an unconditional manner, i.e., the extension of what linguists call its “area of influence”. Emphasising the importance of language ideological research into the attitudes of linguists () and taking as points of reference concepts such as 'verbal hygiene' (), 'standard language ideology' () and 'language myths' (), the present paper focuses on two recent interviews given by prominent linguists, where the emphasis falls on 'Romglish', a much-discussed label in the contemporary Romanian media. The paper identifies (as central to these linguists' attitudes) myths such as those relating to homogeneity and legitimacy, discussing the pertinence of such myths in the present context of globalisation. The distinction of systemic linguistics and generative linguistics has led to more problems for systemicists than for generativists: Halliday's theory has been widely applied but has not been adequately valued as an influential strand of functional grammars in discussions on functionalism and formalism in linguistics; Halliday recognizes Chomsky's theoretical importance but fails to get Chomsky to respond to his questioning. By focusing on the complementarity and reconcilability of functionalist and formalist approaches to language, this paper discusses the common concerns and dialogues along with discursive differences and rhetorical conflicts between Halliday and Chomsky, and proposes that what stands between them is a difference of discourses of argumentation rather than an opposition of functionalism and formalism. It suggests a few things that at least some systemic linguists need to do in order to further interact with generative linguists who may not be interested in the systemic enterprise. It concludes that since Halliday's social semiotic theory aims at everyday problems of living and learning, it should not be difficult for systemic linguists to solve the problem of communicating with Chomsky and his followers. This paper, starting from the synthesis of an ethnographic investigation on the memory that the Greeks of Salento retain of the two major linguists who have dealt with the origins and evolution of the neo-Greek dialect of southern Apulia, highlights the need for a critic study of the orally transmitted literature collected and transcribed so far. In this regard, a study case is presented, the Lament fot the hailstorm of 1567, selected from the wide range of Greek literature of Salento; its parallels and literary sources are highlighted. PREDICATE (Logic) ,LINGUISTS ,VERBS ,NOUNS ,LIVER ,ATTENTION - Abstract
Complex predicates (CP) have attracted the attention of a number of linguists, and their syntactic properties have been widely investigated cross-linguistically. This paper describes Swahili “complex predicates”, that is, verbal constructions (V+N) which resemble a typical verb-object relation, but function like a single lexical verb. In particular, we will deal with a specific type of CP, involving body part terms as part of the predicate, such as -fa moyo, lit. die heart, ‘despair’; -kata ini, lit. cut liver, ‘cause suffering’; or -toka damu, lit. go out blood, ‘bleed’. We show how body part nouns differ from other nominal elements typically employed in complex predicates, both in their syntactic properties (e.g. object marking and possessor raising) and in their semantic characteristics (e.g. degree of semantic compositionality). Indeed, body part terms are often employed to conceptualize more abstract entities and ideas which belong to different semantic domains. Unlike other nominal elements, they seem to occupy the slot of regular objects, while they are not syntactic arguments of the verb, but rather define the scope, range, character or extent of the process. TRAINING of translators ,LINGUISTS ,MOTIVATION (Psychology) ,PSYCHOLOGY ,ATTITUDE (Psychology) - Abstract
This paper reports on an exploratory study on profiling interpreter trainees' (de)motivation in a Chinese context. Reflective essays were collected from 40 postgraduate trainees, and questionnaires were administered to 120 undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. Based on the data collected, this paper examines the interrelation among the Criterion Factors (Motivation and Demotivation), the Internal Factors (Ideal Self, Instrumentality and Avoidance), and the External Factors (Teaching Methods, Perceived Supports and Perceived Competence). The study shows that (1) although generally high in motivation, interpreter trainees are susceptible to demotivation; (2) trainees' Ideal Self (future self-guide) is a better motivator than Instrumentality and Avoidance; (3) factors leading to trainee demotivation could be categorized into four groups: self-, peer-, teacher-, and institute-attributed, and Teacher Factor is the most frequently cited demotivating factor by trainees. Informed by these findings, the paper proposes an expanded research agenda on motivation in interpreting studies and highlights two new measures to encourage and sustain trainee motivation.
