In this article, we extend research on neighborhood social isolation by (1) examining residents of disadvantaged and advantaged communities and (2) considering the character of neighborhoods where people conduct routine activities away from home. We contend that social isolation is experienced by residents of both highly disadvantaged and highly advantaged neighborhoods because the two groups spend time in largely nonoverlapping parts of the city. Individual and neighborhood race-ethnic dynamics exacerbate such social isolation. Data from the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey show that social isolation is experienced by residents of all areas of the city, whether highly disadvantaged or advantaged. African Americans, Latinos and residents of areas with many Latinos suffer additional penalties in the social isolation of disadvantage in where they conduct routine activities. This article explores the circuits of migration among American prostitutes in Mexican border towns between the years 1910 and 1930. After California's Progressive movement shut down the state's red light districts, American prostitutes found that the vice districts of Mexicali and Tijuana offered opportunities for economic and social advancement not available to them in the United States. Ai transnational subjects, these U.S. women exploited the ethno-cultural complexities of the border to claim "whiteness" as "Americans" and yet also relied on the Mexican state to guarantee their rights and liberties. Their story contributes to scholarly debates about prostitution and speaks to the absence of research on American women in the historiography of the twentieth-century U.S.-Mexican border. The article reports on a conference on intersectionality, held in Bangor, Wales, from June 28-29, 2012. Topics of discussion included the interplay of gender, race, and ethnicity in the socioeconomic and cultural experiences of migrants in Europe, multiculturalism, and the acculturation and assimilation of immigrants.

The article discusses the social conditions of Mauritius from the late 18th through early 19th centuries through examining the former East Indian slave and Île de France (Mauritius) estate owner Marie Rozette. An overview of the role that gender played in economic and class mobility in colonial Mauritius is provided. Race and ethic relations in Mauritius, including in relation to marriage, Marie Rozette's owning of slaves and her relationship with the white notary Antoine Gombaud, are discussed.

The article presents an analysis of Josiah Royce's essay titled "Provincialism" which focuses on transforming whiteness into a non-oppressive and anti-racist. According to the author, Royce distinguishes both provincialism and its development as a conscious phenomena which includes consciousness of unity and place identity among provinces. She suggests that for members of a province to develop wise provincialism, they should have relations with other communities and make use of what they acquire for life and community development. She also advocates the determination to give the surroundings of a community with dignity, beauty and nobility. She further stresses that the white people are totally responsible for their whiteness because they do not have the sole control over their whiteness.

Although social class, religion, gender, ethnicity and age are often treated as independent variables (e.g., factors, forces, structures) and invoked as causal explanations for various outcomes, this paper approaches these constructs in more distinctive, humanly-engaged terms. Rather than representing forces that almost mysteriously impose themselves on people, these constructs are to be understood more fundamentally as the products and processes of human group life. We are not denying the linkages of social categories with other aspects of community life but contend that these correlates represent comparatively superficial reflections of the much broader underlying sets of processes that characterize social life. Indeed, we argue that it is these sets of humanly engaged social processes rather than correlational research that constitute the more authentic subject matter of the social sciences. The authors reflect on the use of the word "race" in describing interethnic comparisons in scientific contents. They refer to the effect of the word to the International Society of Nephrology that promotes medicine in the world. They also discuss the concept of ethnicity and its etymology. An overview of the contemporary insights into human genetics is also offered. The authors suggest the use of "ethnicity" than "race."
