Fast rendering and botanically faithful description of plants are a real challenge in computer graphics. Usually, plant production is computed using the method internode by internode, while there exist a lot of buds in an individual tree, therefore, this approach is quite time-consuming even for a medium-size tree. In this paper, we present a new algorithm based on substructure instances to quickly compute plants’ production, and then, for certain plant architectural models, combine with the geometrical rules to create a substructure library. Finally, we construct 3D virtual plants using 3D organs. Compared with the classical method in computing and constructing plant structures, the algorithm described in this paper is much faster while keeping botanical nature of plant. The algorithm can be generalized to most plant species.

The goal of this paper is the interactive and realistic rendering of 3D competing plant covering a landscape. We introduce the so-called FON-Model as a new method for the visualization and simulation of competing plant root systems in which the overlapping area of the depleted-zone between competing root systems is quantatively found. We visualize different conditions for the resource competition between plant root systems. Additionally, we present an improved model for the competition for light that is dependant upon the translucency of the plant foliage and the density of the plant skeleton. In connection to it we introduce a new competition simulations for nurse plants. Finally, we simulate and visualize competition between a healthy plant and a plant that at one point in time becomes sick. As results, our method greatly increases the reality of the rendered landscape and allows rendering of large landscapes in interactive environments.

Blender is the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. This software is fully free (with source code under GNU GPL) to use and distribute within any educational, professional or commercial environment. We can use some modeling methods implemented in Blender or Python scripts for the creation of our artwork. Blender has implemented an embedded Python interpreter, which allows it to run scripts written in that language. These scripts can use the Blender Python API to access the program's internals and greatly expand Blender's functions. In this paper, a simple Python script for the plants generation has been described and parameters and a random factor have been set.

This paper introduces a new technique for modeling signal and nutrient propagation in plant models to counteract the main disadvantages of current methods: the difficulty of setting the velocity of the propagation and the complexity of models with many signals. This technique uses implicit parameters and global propagation functions, offering a better control over the velocity of propagation, making the modeling of many independent signals an easy task, and keeping the model simple and objective. Furthermore, our approach is easy to be aggregated into existing models and makes the modeling of signal and nutrient propagation a more intuitive task.
