The Procurement of Feeder system in Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP) for The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Tokamak device has been carrying out after the signature of Procurement Arrangement in October 2011. The relevant main tasks in 2012 and 2013 are the qualification of some key subcomponents, including high temperature superconducting current leads (HTS-CL), superconducting joints, 80-K thermal shield (TS), vacuum barrier, in-cryostat feeder, cold mass support, etc. The production of manufacturing drawings, preparation of manufacturing plan, manufacture and qualification of tooling, and qualification of subcomponents are all involved in this phase. The ITER Magnet System contains 18 Toroidal Field Coils (TFC). These are large D-shaped coils of about 300 t, 17.5-m height and 9-m width. They consist of a Winding Pack (WP) enclosed in a rigid structural steel case, the Toroidal Field Coil Case (TFCC). The WP is a bonded structure of 7 Double Pancakes (DP), each made up of a radial plate (RP) housing the reacted Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit superconductor (CICC), which operate at 4.5 K in supercritical helium. The conductor carries a current of 68 kA in operation to produce a nominal peak field of 11.8 T. The total stored magnetic energy in the 18 TFCs is 41 GJ. While the Japanese and European Domestic Agencies that are in charge of the procurement of the TFCs are progressing with the manufacturing design and the fabrication trials prior to launch the production of the real coils, the ITER Organization (IO) is completing the development and qualification of the most critical items, e.g. cyanate ester and resin blends for the conductor and WP insulation system, the terminal region, the helium inlet, a charged resin system for the filling of the gap between the WP and the TFCC and the general tolerancing especially at the interfaces between the neighboring systems. The Correction Coils (CC) of the ITER Tokamak are developed to reduce the range of magnetic error fields created by imperfections in the location and geometry of the other coils used to confine, heat, and shape the plasma. The proposed system consists of three sets of 6 coils each, located at the top (TCC), side (SCC) and bottom (BCC) of the Tokamak device and using a NbTi cable-in-conduit superconducting conductor (CICC). Within each set, the coils are connected in pairs to produce a toroidal field to reduce the most troublesome, lower order, poloidal mode number fields (m = 1,2,3) in order to operate below the locked mode threshold. The conductor is designed to operate up to 6 T. The winding uses pancakes of one-in-hand conductor (quadpancakes for SCC, octopancakes for TCC and BCC), thus avoiding internal joints. The winding-pack is enclosed inside a 20 mm thick stainless steel casing. The coils are supported by rigid connections to the Toroidal Field (TF) coils. The structural design of the CC is mainly driven by the allowable fatigue stress levels in the conductor jacket, in the case material and in the glass-polyimide electrical insulation system. The boundary conditions on the CC are imposed by the TF coils deformation and the electromagnetic interactions with the PF coils system. The Central Solenoid (CS) of the ITER tokamak has to provide the flux variation needed to induce the plasma current and to shape the field lines in the divertor region. It is designed as a stack of 6 identical coils, independently power supplied. Repulsing forces arising between the coils during a scenario are withstood by a precompression structure installed around the coils. Studies were carried out to simplify the winding manufacture, to optimize the precompression structure and procedure, to optimize the stack assembly of the 6 coils and the assembly of the central solenoid inside the tokamak which allows withdrawal from the machine, while meeting the ITER design criteria and in particular the Magnet Structural Design Criteria (static and fatigue). High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) current leads provide the transition of the current transfer system from room temperature to the 4.5 K. For the ITER superconducting magnet system, a total of 60 HTS current leads are required, with a total nominal current capacity of 2.64 MA. By the use of HTS leads significant power savings can be achieved during the operation of the ITER magnet system. Based on the functional specification by the ITER Organization (IO), ASIPP manufactured and tested a first pair of trial HTS current leads for the ITER coils. The cryogenic test of these 68 kA and 52 kA trial HTS leads was performed at ASIPP using the cryo-plant and power supplies of the EAST Tokamak. The following paper presents the results of the tests and concludes with a discussion of the design features of the next generation prototype of the ITER HTS leads based on the results of the trial lead tests. Abstract: The central solenoid (CS) of the ITER tokamak contributes to the inductive flux to drive the plasma, to the shaping of the field lines in the divertor region and to vertical stability control. It is made of 6 independent coils, using a Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit superconducting conductor, held together by a vertical precompression structure. This design enables ITER to access a wide operating window of plasma parameters, up to 17MA and covering inductive and non-inductive operation. Each coil is based on a stack of multiple pancake winding units to minimise joints. A glass–polyimide electrical insulation, impregnated with epoxy resin, is giving a high voltage operating capability, tested up to 29kV. The CS performance is fatigue driven mainly by the stress levels in the conductor jacket and in the precompression structure needed to keep the modules in contact during the repulsive forces which can arise in operation. A rigid connection to the TF coils provided at one end and a centering support at the other end allow to resist net vertical forces as well as unbalanced radial forces while avoiding torsion transmission from the TF Coils to the CS assembly. Abstract: The first 2 years of the ITER IO has seen substantial progress towards the construction of the magnets, in three main areas. Firstly, the design has been developed under the conflicting constraints to minimise construction costs and to maximise plasma physics performance. Building construction momentum while updating the design to take account of new physics assessments of the coil requirements has been challenging. Secondly, with a stabilising design, it has been possible for the Domestic Agencies to launch the first industrial procurement contracts. And thirdly, critical R&D to confirm the performance of the Nb3Sn cable in conduit design is proceeding successfully. The design consolidation has been accompanied by design reviews involving the international community. The reviews conducted by magnet experts have enabled a consensus to be built on choosing between some of the design options in the original ITER basic design in 2001. The major design decisions were to maintain the circular Nb3Sn conductor embedded in radial plates for the toroidal field (TF) coils and to maintain NbTi-based conductors for the PF coils. Abstract: The ITER magnets are a complex system involving interfaces between many advanced technologies (superconductors, forging/welding/machining of massive structures, cryogenics, composites and moulding, high voltage electrical), yet at the same time form part of the ITER ‘basic machine’ which is required to operate at the design parameters, broadly failure free, for the design life of the tokamak. This imposes special quality control problems for the ITER project integration by the ITER International Team (IT) through the design, fabrication and operation. The magnets are not a test bed for new technology but in spite of this must use it, successfully. There is little previous experience of such a system but full functionality is required from the start, with limited opportunity for adjustment. And, finally, costs and schedule must be contained. The procurement strategy for the machine, with magnet components being supplied ‘in kind’, requires particular attention to the specifications, scheduling and quality control (QC). Special issues here are the testing requirements on magnet components, especially before final installation but also at critical intermediate stages. Unnecessary or ineffective quality control procedures cause delay and high costs, and divert attention from critical items. The main points of the magnet QC programme are summarised, including the use of codes and standards, qualification, manufacturing quality assurance, commissioning and in-service inspection. As the test of the PFCI is foreseen in 2006 at JAERI Naka, Japan, it is essential to consider in detail the lessons learned from the short NbTi sample tests, as well as the issues left open after them, in order to develop a suitable test program of the PFCI aimed at bridging the extrapolation gap between measured strand and future PF coil performance. Here we consider in particular the following issues: 1) the actual possibility to quench the PFCI conductor in the Tcs tests before quenching the intermediate joint, 2) the question of the so-called sudden or premature quench, based on SULTAN sample results, applying a recently developed multi-solid and multi-channel extension of the Mithrandir code to a short sample analysis; 3) the feasibility of the AC losses calorimetry in the PFCI. Abstract: A coherent set of Codes and Standards (C&S) for the ITER structures, system and components is needed to fulfil the safety and licensing requirements, and to provide the specified quality of the mechanical components manufactured by the different ITER Parties. In general the basic regulatory documents do not specify particular design and manufacturing codes, but for pressure equipment general Essential Safety Requirements are formulated and the means to fulfil them from a technical and legal point of view are given. This paper presents requirements for the ITER pressure and nuclear pressure equipment. It describes the selection of Codes and Standards for the mechanical components. Available industrial codes and standards (e.g. ASME, RCC-MR, and European standards) are selected for ITER components. For components not covered by conventional codes, specific structural design criteria and technical specifications have been developed. The remaining issues discussed are related to the completion of the specific C&S and the assessment of conformity with regulatory requirements before and during construction of the components. Abstract: The ITER correction coils (CC) include three sets of six coils each, distributed symmetrically around the tokamak and inserted between the toroidal field (TF) and the poloidal field (PF) coils. Each pair of coils located on opposite sides with respect to the plasma is series connected with polarity such to produce asymmetric fields. These superconducting coils use a cable-in-conduit conductor, insulated, wound into multiple pancakes and inserted inside an austenitic stainless steel case. The requirements and the main features of the design are presented and the selected options reviewed in terms of their criticality in achieving the specified tolerances. Abstract: Error fields in Tokamaks are small departures of the exact axisymmetry of the ideal magnetic field configuration. Their reduction beyond a threshold value by the error field correction coils is essential since sufficiently large static error fields lead to discharge disruption. The error fields are originated not only by coils fabrication and installation alignment tolerances, joints and busbars but also due to the presence of ferromagnetic elements. The start of plasma current flattop with relatively low plasma density is considered as a critical state of the 15MA scenario for the onset of locked modes causing disruptions. A figure of merit, the ‘3-mode’ criterion, based on the lowest error field harmonics [(1,1); (2,1); (3,1)] was chosen to assess the error fields expected in ITER. Analysis performed last years in an independent way by CREATE (EU) and Efremov Inst. (RF) groups has allowed a deep understanding of the error fields induced by all the possible sources. Both groups were successfully benchmarked with the estimation of the error fields induced by a given deformed shape of a TF coil obtaining a perfect match of the results up to 2 orders of magnitude smaller than the defined threshold of B 3-mode/B to <5×10−5. Three different sets of independent variables based on a 3D rigid body movement of the coils have been provided for the 6 CS modules, 18 TF coils and 6 PF coils tolerances, which have allowed a clear understanding of the weight of each of the variables in the induced error fields. The results obtained in 2008 with a realistic set of magnets tolerances concluded that the system of correction coils provides effective suppression of the error fields with margin to correct possible impact of other sources. In particular, it has been shown that superconducting joints, feeders and busbars play a secondary effect; however the radial position of the TF coils and the tilt and radial shift of the CS stack would have a relevant influence. The ensuing recent sets of variables studied aimed at deepening the understanding of the operational limits. The present paper addresses the impact of the fabrication tolerances and installation misalignments of the magnet system; the impact of ferromagnetic inserts and busbars as well as the design of the correction coils will be thoroughly covered elsewhere (Amoskov et al., in press ).
